MAIYAM - Past food (Auroville)
Maiyam - Past food (Maiyam-past food) is a concept South Indian restaurant in Auroville which explores forgotten flavours of Southern India. It is primarily a vegan restaurant which incorporates age-old cooking practices and recipes into their menu. The food is simple, nutritious and full of amazing flavour. Also, they have a menu which changes daily, so everyday is a new surprise!
I happened to discover this place on my last visit to Auroville and instantly fell in love with it. The relaxed vibe, earthy ambience, the lovely hosts and adorable dogs... And most of all - the food, with its naturally authentic flavours made it a soothing experience for the tummy as well as the soul.

PS : If I lived in Auroville and could have such meals everyday, I could definitely consider turning Vegan!

I visited this restaurant last year. It’s one of the best restaurant in Auroville if you want to try something authentic.I was remembering how good this restaurant was, so decided to right a few words here.
Fabulously healthy and tasty meals.
We had the thali. It started with vendayam (fenugreek) coffee and kezhvaragu (Ragi) laddu. Both were tasty and whetted our appetite for the main plate. That had thinai (foxtail millet), noolkol (turnip), fresh salad with carrots, cabbage & sprouted moong dal, ellu (sesame) chutney and kara kozhambu (not very spicy).
We also had a bowl of red rice and moong dal with Karivepilai (spicy curry leaf powder) podi.
We finished the meal with regular coffee made with coconut milk and jaggery.
The food was fresh and refreshing. The tastes popped on our tongues. The whole meal left us refreshed.
The service is very friendly. The ambiance while simple is clean. The people serving were always willing to answer questions.
Maiyam, for us, was a place of discovery and revelation. When in our city life all that we encounter are fast foods, a board that says past foods aroused our curiosity. It was amazing to see how healthy and traditional recipes are being brought to life. For me and my husband, this was food 'NEVER EATEN BEFORE' and we loved the experience. While the owner did try to explain the ingredients patiently and even the method of cooking, our sheer lack of knowledge is to be blamed for us not really understanding most of it. one of these days, I am going back to learn it all! Till then, keep up the awesome work you do, people at Maiyam!
Those who like sattvik, ayurvedic food, this is a place for you. Loved the food. It's the type of food we required before our half marathon run the next day. Please don't go to this place if you have taste for spicy North Indian or South Indian food and havenot or wouldn't want to try healthy, sattvik food. Only people who likes and have taste for sattvik food will appreciate this place. I loved the food. I remove one star for resturant is not capable of handling too many people. We were group of 24 people, but the food was delayed for 45 mins and they were serving evey plate in 5 mins. I am sure there would be a reason for the same...as they say they were food with wisdom. I am definitely going here again.
This is such a precious place! The food is not only fresh and tasty, but made with great knowledge and awareness of the owner who is always glad to rave a meaningful talk and his store has wonderful whole staple ingredients to make your own cooking richer in flavor and nutrition.
Local and seasonal cuisine with focus on healthy ingredients and clean cooking. Past food as it is rightly called, it has a very homely ambience and the food is just mouth watering. A must visit for all foodies coming to Auroville or Pondicherry. Do try out the vegan coconut milk coffee and their absolutely delectable curd rice. All meals are freshly prepared from scratch everyday and served in earthen bowls and plates. The chilli infusion drink was a pleasant surprise and we absolutely loved it.
Past food, not fast food. They serve food from days forgone. Very interesting dining experience with a unique, flavorful food which hits the right spot. The full course fills the taste buds with an incredible, unforgettable meal. The ingredients and selection of items through the course are tailored to ensure a joyous, healthy meal that is light yet filling
Great modified version of southern indian food. I could feel the owner's philosophy of preparing food. We tried the plate. Everything was great except the drink. The rate should be 5 but I gave 4 because of the chilli infusion drink. The taste was strange. All of my group felt the same. Other dishes were perfect.
Authentic soul food. Unfortunately didn't get to try anything other than their curd rice, which was spectacular considering I didn't think that someone could make something interesting out of such a basic dish. It was served in a banana leaf in a terracotta plate. Would definitely visit this place early to get the most.
Hands down, one of the best food experiences in Auroville. Thoughtfully crafted menu, simple ingredients, complex preparations, and lots of meaning. Don't miss chatting with Vijhay, the owner to understand the philosophy behind the food & also why he does what he does. Everything on their menu is a Must try!
A must visit if you are visiting Auroville. They don't have a fixed menu because all meals are freshly prepared everyday. They serve very simple, homely veggiterian meals. Tried the Maiyam plate and bowl... Both were amazing and decently priced. Another amazing thing is the food is served in clay pots 💚💚💚
A beautiful and well executed concept restaurant inspired by traditional, local, and seasonal foods. The affordable menu changes depending on what is available, but everything we had was delicious.
It is evident that a lot of care and thought went into the creation of this restaurant, and it would be great to see this idea expand.
One of the best places to eat around Auroville. The maiyam plate and bowl are a great culinary experience and the food is so wholesome and nutritious. The food is prepared with a lot of care and the presentation and staff are impeccable. Super impressed.
