If you don't eat at MTR, you haven't visited Bangalore. No need to look at a menu or arrive just in time for lunch. Wait in line, get a seat and enjoy the special meal! It's the best Indian meal I have ever tasted, hands down. No comparing. MUST HAVE.

The place is also called MTR 1924. A no frills eating joint you must try their Rava Idli and Coffee. After all they are the people who first made Rava Idli. If you are in mood for something sweet try their signature dish-Chandrahara. You can also buy South Indian dry snacks here.

I was new to the city and had been told that this is a legendary outlet which has maintained its taste and quality over the years. I am happy to report that its all true !
I loved the authentic taste of dosa and the basic seating arrangement. It's a good strategy to market it for the food experience rather than ambience, in order to keep the prices under control.

Having food here is really a pleasant experience. Food of this place is awesome and authentic. While having food here you will not feel like a restaurant. The ambience here make you feel like home and that's the best part of it. The only disappointment is the waiting time to get a seat and after that getting the food.

This is the best South Indian place in Bangalore hands down. MTR, or Mavalli Tiffin Rooms, named after the popular neighbourhood in which it is located with Lalbagh a stone's throw away, has been serving lip-smacking food since 1924. They specialise in South Indian cuisine and claim to have invented the rava idli. They also have a trademark dessert ‘Chandrahara’ which is served only on Sundays. Having visitded this place multiple times, we dropped in for a Sunday breakfast.

Bonda Soup: Wait, this is nothing like a tomato soup or a clear veg soup that we know. Bonda soup is a South Indian snack to be eaten. Prepared from the same dough that is used to prepare the crispy uddina vada/ medu vada, but this is in the shape and size of a tennis ball. When served, the bonda is placed in a bowl and the soup poured on top of it. The taste is super yumm and very comforting.

Chandrahara: Made with maida flour deep fried to perfection and topped with a thick, sweet liquid made from khoa (Rabdi). The Chandrahara is MTR’s trademark dessert served only on Sundays. Started during the 1950s and originally called the 'French Sweet', it was renamed to Chandrahara after a movie by the same name running in a cinema hall in Bangalore, Gives the word 'RICH' a whole new meaning!

MTR Masala Dosa: The Dosa, served alongside coconut chutney and sambar, was crispier than ever and was also served with a small amount of ghee on top, which was to be poured above the Dosa. The dosa was perfectly crisp and super tasty.

Rava Masala Dosa: Made to perfection, crisp and super tasty, served alongside coconut chutney and sambar.

The service is quick and the server always in hurry but no-nonsense.

Bon Appétit.

We had grape juice, boli, masala dosa, sambhar, rasam, side dish etc. It was so filling and very tasty. Every item was made very good. The place had good ambience. People were very friendly. Highly recommend this place for vegetarian delightful food.

The best filter coffee I've had in Bengaluru. So is the masala Dosa - best potato filling in a Dosa. Curd vadas at MTR are served with boondi giving to it a crunchy dimension. MTR at Indiranagar and St. Marks road are must try joints. Although an extra point for the one at St. Marks road for the ambience.

I accidentally stumbled into this place while walking through busy streets of MG Road, watched a movie in a nearby theatre and was little hungry and noticed this place. Masala dosa was amazing and it was fully loaded with ghee plus gjee given separately as well. Filter coffee could have been better.

Well the famous MTR was able to satisfy my taste buds. We tried rava idli and fruit custurd.
Rava idli was very tasty. They gave Desi ghee to pour over the idli. When you take a bite you can feel each granule of rava and that is what perfection is.
Fruit custurd was bad. It will look really good but when you finish the ice cream then you are left out with plain thin milk and lots of common fruits. Please don't order.
I am gonna review more items from this place

This is the best South Indian place in Bangalore hands down. When you search for top South Indian places in Bangalore, MTR is there on every list and deserves to be without any doubt. I went there reading one of such lists on a Thursday afternoon. I was pretty new to the city and my parents were also visiting so I chose this place for the lunch. And man this was some extraordinary experience! My parents later said that they wouldn't have got a better lunch anywhere else.

MTR, or Mavalli Tiffin Rooms, named after the popular neighborhood in which it is located with Lalbagh a stone's throw away, has been serving from the pre-Independence era. They specialise in South Indian cuisine of Udipi, Karnataka and has a pretty interesting story of inventing Rava Idli. Interestingly the quality of the inventors of Rava Idli hasn't decreased a bit over the years and its always packed whichever time you visit the place. The place still holds that old world charm with old decor, waiters dressed in a specific attire, and very very well organized. The food is cheap with meals ranging between 200-250. You have to keep in mind they have a fixed menu for lunch and dinner and you cannot avail anything else if you opt for the meals. This might be a complete turn-downer for you, but let me tell you this place has the guts to offer which you can't refuse ( reminds you of some Brando, eh?) I was blown away by the range of items that was served in such organized and smooth way as if they just know when to serve you. Its more like sitting in a marriage ceremony and people will serve you in intervals. It starts with Poori and 4 different kinds of sabzi and followed by Baby Dosas, rice, more different kinds of sabzi and what not. Trust me, you can't even pause for 5 mins before your plate is filled with a new item. I remember trying around 20 different items. They serve a fruit ice cream as dessert at the end as well.
And its needless to say the food is fingerlicking good. So if you are in Bangalore and wanna try the best South Indian, MTR is the place I would recommend 10 times out of 9. :D

Refreshing taste, different from south Indian restaurants of North
I ordered masala dosa, masala vada and filter coffee
Masala vada was quite different from the one we are served in the north, a green chutney paste was applied on the inside which was giving a different taste to the dosa
Masala vada was equally good and filter coffee was amazing.
Overall a nice, simple and plain restaurant serving good food

First time at an MTR outlet, even after being in Bengaluru for 7 years! Ordered just idly in lunch after a hectic morning. And it was my girlfriend's first outdoor eating in Bengaluru. Needless to say, her falling in love with the city was boosted by this experience. The soft and large idlies, accompanied with an excellent chutney and even brilliant sambhar just gave everything one wants in a hungry stomach within budget. The ghee topping added more flavors to this soul filling experience. Will be going there again for sure.

MTR 1924 is located at the St. Mark's Road, Bangalore. This restaurant serves tasty South Indian food at a very cheap rate.

We ordered their Rawa Onion Masala Dosa, Pudi Dosa and Rawa Idli. The food was hot and tasty. The spices were well balanced and the quantity of the stuffings was good. For dessert, we tried their Badam Halwa which was rich and delicious.

Overall, the food was well cooked and tasty. I totally recommend this restaurant if you want to have a quick and tasty meal without making a hole in your pocket.

One of the oldest restaurants in the city, it's a must go for lunch! Every dish is exquisite and typical of this culture.
Had the Thaali for lunch and there was Benne Masala Dosa, poori subzi, carrot salad, beans curry, chutney and kheer! Every item was too good, but the Benne masala dosa just melted in the mouth, with the chutney, with every bite!
The Vangi baath with Raita was too good, and the white rice with Sambhar and rasam was extremely good, with the chips!
Curd rice was there. But the moong dal halwa was out of the world, with a lot of ghee.
There was also ice cream fruit salad for dessert, which was beyond perfect!
The sumptuous and amazing lunch ended with paan and a completely filled stomach!

Location and ambience- located in heart of the city, one of my favourite go to places anytime I am hungry. Ambience is that of a low cost south Indian restuarant, however, the food makes up for all of it.

Food - I love their Masala dosa made in ghee. I have had dosas in tons of places but none this good.
Another amazing dish they serve is khara bhaat.
Anyone who goes to MTR must try these dishes for sure. Great quality.

Service - Service is quick as they are always flooded with people. However, the staff may or may not be friendly because of time crunch.

X-factor - Its a legacy and anyone who visits the city and is a south Indian food lover must go to this restuarant else trust me , you are missing something.

A short work trip took me to MTR and boy was it a memorable breakfast! They are famous for a reason!! They have ample seating space. They also have a bakery/ready-made products store at the entrance that sells their signature products like rasam/sambar powder, sweets etc.

Tried their Ghee Rawa Masala , Ghee Masala Dosa, Ghee Idly, Kesari Bhath and Khara Bhath. Each of the dishes was made perfectly and had the quintessential South Indian flavor. The dosas had a lentil powder and dousing it with the ghee gave it a fabulous taste! The idy was soft and pillowy and pairing it with the slightly spicy coconut coriander chutney made the experience all the more better! The khara bhath was decent. Didn't really understand the huge slice of raw tomato crown. The kesari bhath was aptly sweet and was the perfect ending to our super awesome breakfast!

I for some reason felt that the prices were a tad high keeping in view their portions. One small scoop of kesari bhath about Rs. 60. Agreed that the quality is equally good, but for the daily eater, it might be a little steep.

On a work trip in Bangalore and the CEO suggested we all go out for dinner before taking our late night flight (on the airline he used to run!) Unsure of whether we'd get to the airport I pursed my self doubt in the safety of the group.

For someone who loves south Indian food, this restaurant, complete with it's history of tasty food lived up to our expectations. 2 of us ordered the thali while the CFO and I ordered the regular version of the same. They call these special meal and mini meal where the former comes with poori, bisi bili bhaat and unlimited servings. Well, us the Finance folks couldn't do justice to our limited version of the same defeated by sheer volume of food.

Food, everything from rassam to sambhar, dosa, chutney etc were delicious. Service was efficient, with our server successfully upselling half our meals to the larger version of the same thing!

Overall, I'd like to visit to this place for breakfast and lunch as well and try their full menu.

Well worth the 50 paise extra their menu charges carry!

Recommended.

Good place to hang out with friends and family and a must visit place to a person visiting B'lore for the first time... They are the originators of rava idlis(as they say)
And the premixes brand MTR which you might've used at some point of time is the same as this. Service is prompt and quick and the food on the menu is also really nice. I ordered Bisibel bhath, filter coffee, bonda soup and Benne/Butter dosa. Its majorly famous for the breakfast but you can go according to their strict timing they follow and end up having some great meals. -Bisibel bhath was great and they serve it with a small tiny little dish of ghee.
-Filter coffee is authentic and it was a 100% pure coffee which could open your eyes at any given point if day if you're feeling sleepy or stressed out of they work.
-Bonda soup is nothing but 4 pieces of moong dal batter fried dumplings in a some kind of preparation of their own.
-And the hero of this review is Benne which translates to butter dosa is a rich dosa made with lots of butter in it and out of it(coz they serve a dollop of butter on the top) I liked this dosa without anything with it. Major disclaimer and warning : Don't count calories if you're here and it's actually not meant for health conscious people. You may not survive this 😂😅✌️👍

I had been wanting to dine at this place for a very long time. This is just about 1 km from cubbon park and the road is too beautiful, so it becomes a nice walk from there. The place is actually small, though its very old and quite famous. Food is definitely very yummy here. The butter masala dosa tastes really good. The quality of the dosa, the softness and the crispiness, the perfectly balanced potato masala etc takes this a new level. Also, here, the dosa did not have the usual red chutney. It was a green chutney inside the masala dosa which gave it a very unique flavour. The tea was ok, I did not quite enjoy it. Place is too crowded even if its 10.30 am for breakfast. Service was ok, which was understandable with the huge rush. Overall, definitely a place to try the dosa. It is slightly expensive compared to other south indian breakfast places.

The food was excellent. We had dosa and coffee. The dosa has a very crispy crust, something which I like, with thick sambhar and coconut chutney. They even served a little amount of pure desi ghee to go along with dosa. Everything was well cooked and tasty. The decor and furniture were workman like and is cleaned very thoroughy every time customer depart after consuming meal. The place seems to have a steady stream of customers for the nearly 45 minutes that we spent there. Staff were courteous and the food was on the table real quick. The prices are very reasonable, considering the quality that is on offer. The only little hassle we had was with payment of bill. It was after a very long time that we were presented with bill for payment. And maybe they could have better arrangement where you can wash your hands. On the whole a very enjoyable and satisfying experience and one can understand why this place is amongst the top rated restaurants.

We had Masala Dosa, Pudi Dosa and Idli. Their taste was good. What surprised me was that they serve idli and dosa with a tiny bowl of ghee. I think using ghee is their specialty as you can also smell and taste ghee in dosa, as if they have been dipped in ghee. Great taste. Ample seating. Pricing could be reduced compared to other places in Bangalore which serve similar taste at around half the price. We paid 300 Rs for 3 items (masala dosa, pudi dosa, 1 idli), which is decent if you are eating it in northern India but a bit higher in Bangalore. We were very hungry so started eating immediately. Only halfway through it I realised to take a picture. Will update them when I go there again.

We liked this Branch Better than the Inception Branch. Pretty Clean Ambiance, Good Hospitality, Relatively Cleaner Utensils and The Waiter suggested some Items which blew us away. The dosas are made in much better perfection in here. You don't have to wait either, You get seats most times. From Dosas , Bonda Soup , Ravaidli, Karabath, They took time in creating such items which makes this place unique. Ofcourse the moment you enter you can feel the smell of Ghee All over.

Good place to have authentic south indian meals..went there for a sunday breakfast. Loved the idlis, chow chow bath..they give small quantity of ghee to add over idlis and dosa which adds to the taste. Parking is in a complex just next to the MTR building down the lane, which is bit congested. There was small waiting queue for morning breakfast.

MTR, a culinary institution in Bangalore, offers an unforgettable dining experience. The Masala Dosa is a must-try, with its crispy texture and perfectly spiced potato filling. The Rava Idli is soft and spongy, accompanied by flavorful chutneys and sambar. The aromatic filter coffee adds the perfect finishing touch. With impeccable service and a rich food heritage, MTR is a destination that captures the essence of Bangalore's cuisine.

I had a light dinner here. Taste was fine and service was good. But nothing special about this place, it’s another usual eatery.

Tried Masala Dose, Uddina Vade and Filter coffee. Dose taste is average, Vade is good and coffee is good offcourse. If you are expecting too much from this restaurant you may be bit disappointed. Place is maintained cleanly and the place is often crowded. Cost is also bit more compared to other veg restaurants.
