Old is always gold!! This place is marked as one of the first ones to setup Udupi style Breakfast in Bengaluru and when Bengaluru was really Bengaluru then.

To start with the Button Idly, soothing sambar and then the Masala Dosa and ending with a perfect filter coffee, this place is underrated.

When you are at Gandhi Bazar and desperate to have Sagu masala dosa, and realise that vidyarthi bhavan is closed on a friday after you land, what next?? Worry not. Udupi sri krishna bhavan will save you.

Another gem which started operating since 1926. How come coincidentally all legendary hotels started in 1926? Still wondering. Was it a culinary revolution year? 93 years is a long time. But the crisp dosa, with the mild sagu does wonders to you.

Order a single idli dip as a filler, by the time ur dosa is crispified in the kitchen. Chutney has a hint of ginger here, and the ginger makes it different. Sambar here is top class, by the time u finish the idli, you will definitely figure out it wasn't a filler but a must have.

Wash it all down with the double strong filter coffee.
Extremely good. Considering the trouble one has to face to reach there on a working day, I suggest you to visit this on Friday. Be there to cherish the food.

Now, wondering why have I rated less by a star, that's for the sake of love!

Highly recommend.

If it's one of the legendary places in Basavanagudi (I heard it is) then it's one of the renovated ones...pleasant...service is old fashioned crisp, so is the food and clientele. I had one ghee soaked Bangalore style masala dosa (regretted not ordering the sagu dosa...heard many asking for this), medium size, crisp on outside thick inside...nothing Udupi style about it...it's the Udupi evolved in Bangalore masala dosa. Was satisfactory. Washed all the ghee down with 2 cups of coffee. Going here again for the sagu dosa as I am FOMO.

If you are looking to taste, indulge and have a great experience of Namma Bengaluru's authentic South Indian Meal, then look no further. This place hands down serves the best South Indian food. If you are not a big eater, you may want to skip your morning breakfast on the day you plan to go here. Also I recommend you go here as early as 12 pm to beat the weekend rush and have a peaceful leisurely meal. I am not very sure about this but, last time I counted there were a total of about 21 items that got served and this includes the banana and paan at the end of the meal. The highlight of the entire meal for me personally is the Bele Obattu that they serve. It's always served hot and fresh with pure ghee. You really have to experience this yourself. Also, for me it is a struggle to do justice to the meal but I do try hard and make it point to taste everything and not waste much. I definitely recommend this place and I always keep going back here and would be happily doing so 😊

Another packed breakfast place in Gandhi Bazar with both ground floor and the first floor seating. I had to wait for around 20 minutes to get a seat on a Sunday morning. We started with idly which was average but the vada here was just fantastic with the right balance of crispyness and softness. The masala dosa was more on the softer side than a crispy one but the taste was really good. Obviously a coffee is a must after a great breakfast like this and yes the coffee was just perfect and hot. A highly recommended place for an amazing South Indian breakfast.

Somehow forgot that MTR and Maiyyas is closed on Mondays. Then decided to visit this place for lunch. As I entered, I just found plate meals, but luckily visited the first floor and found there is special meals too. It was a great feast! No complaints. Loved the meals. My fav Kadubu, puri sagu, kosambari, obbattu were superb! Grape juice was like just the way I would want it. My leaf was clean at the end except for curry leaves etc., That explains I believe... 🙂 A MUST VISIT! Service could have been better.

Food / Drink - South Indian. More specifically Karnataka style! Tiffins taste good. But the meal (thali) is the real deal! Two types available. One on plantain leaf with special sweet, Bhajji, juice. The other for mere mortals, simple bowl of rice, 2 pooris, salad, sambar & rasam, one payasa. If you are visiting it for the first time or are exploring Karnataka food, go for the special plantain meal. Food tastes good. You know it is prepared well, not greasy, and does not leave you bloated. Quality food.

Price - 84/- for a normal thali. In line with other restaurants offering similar food. Not great value, but not expensive either.

Service - Simple, prompt and make you feel good service. Very south Bengaluru like.

Ambience - Clean, well laid out restaurant.

Location - Amidst the charming Gandhi Bazaar market.

Parking - Street.

Speciality - Karnataka food.

Must try? - Nah!

Pro tip - Go hungry. Go for the special meal.

This place is never to be missed,,the food served here very tasty and ,,the typical traditional Thali of udupi which I had was really very nice,,u can go with friends and family for "LUNCH",,,its exclusively veg!!
Good service
Three types of servings which I tasted were:
1)the main classic thali with unlimited sabji and buttermilk ,and u get sweet ,sometimes ice-cream not always,,and a masala pan at the end👌(it's actually comes in a very good quantity,,and if possible get this one when u r veryyyy hungry ,,,,,do not waste food is wht we know right)))
2)normal thali ,,where u get limited Puri and rice and all
3)"just rice " thali--when u don't have enough time 😝
If u r a truly udupi thali fan then u should not miss this in Basavanagudi,,,reasonable price ,, hygienic
MAKE SURE U GO EARLY ON WEEKENDS in afternoon ,,ELSE YOU NEED. TO WAIT in queue FOR HALF AN HR or more .....enjoyyy hog well

About the Special Meals:

A visit to this restaurant for an afternoon lunch requires some planning, fasting till lunch time being one :P

Coming to the spread, this place serves great South Indian meals on the authentic Baale Yele(Plantain leaf).
You get kosambari, 2 palya and amazing chutney. You may have puris and saagu at your own will although I didn't want to go beyond 3 just to explore everything in the menu.
Happala and Aambode happen to be great sides. Pulav, Sambar and Rasam forms of rice can be stuffed upto your digestive capacity. I was tired by this, only to know I still had to have Holige, Payasa, curdrice and grape juice to be forced into my stomach :P

Overall a great experience.

Food 5/5
Ambience 4/5
Value for money 5/5(considering the meal price as 210 for an unlimited spread)

I love the special meals here. I usually bring it home and eat since it’s a lot to eat for one person. Be prepared to wait if you go on an afternoon of a weekend. The spread is very diverse and tasty. If you are conscious about plastic waste then carry lots of small containers as their packaging is simply exhaustive given the amount of dishes in full meals.

Visited this place on a Saturday and I couldn't believe my eyes that this place was jam packed. We had to wait for 15mins to get seated. It's located in the busy streets of Gandhi bazaar main road.

It's in 1st floor and seating is separated in 3 sections. One where you get food only in plantain leaves. Other 2 just the regular food. The one thing is, this place does not have a proper waiting area so it's chaos during lunch time but the manager does his job and makes sure you get seated soon and the service is on time without any delay.

We were 10 of us and somehow adjusted in 2 tables and we ordered pineapple kesribath, poori saagu, 3 south Indian thali, thair vade, millet Bisibelebath and curd rice.

Poori saagu was too good and we all loved it. Millet Bisibelebath was amazing and so light and healthy and tasty that we ordered one more. Thair vade was fresh and good. Thali was liked by all and it was so worth it.Kesribath tasted just like homemade.

This place is so affordable and you get a homely feeling as soon as you enter the place.I will definitely come back here for millet Bisibelebath and curd rice

I am deducting 1 star only fr sitting arrangement. Otherwise an amazing place if u want to try authentic south Indian food. I went there on a friend's recommendation, even though rating was not very encouraging. Wen u want to try various south indian items, u end up going to a different place for each item. But this place has it all. Its like one-stop shop for good south Indian food. They serve food on a banana leaf, in small portions, but that is justified considering the number of items they serve. Their wada & idli smabar was fantabulous. Its a buffet ,where waiter ll come n serve on ur table, u can have an item as many times as u want, but I don't think u ll need anything 2nd time. Because by the time they are done serving, u r already full. Usually there s a waiting fr the tables to get vacant. Its a busy place so don't b surprised if a stranger comes n sit on ur table. Their entery is quite small. But u get a taste of India in Indian style.

It's real beauty lies in the people around you. The dishes are as simple as they are. The conversations are delightfully mundane. It's a different feeling. A feeling that you probably realise even before you climb the stairs to get there. A grocery store that carries the smell of 90s leads you up. Before you get lost into a world that you thought never existed anymore. The food may not be as mindblowing as Brahmins. But it has its own charm. Certainly that masala idli was something that I've never tasted before. The boards read in Kannada. Quietly or rather busily lies this place that refuses to give into the changes of the world. That's the feeling you need to go for.

Have passed by near the location infinity time and have heard about the place many time but couldn't have located it, a narrow pass through stairs to the first floor in between two shops is the entrance. Was there for a good afternoon lunch and the list of variety they provide is good, something like Maiyas and MTR. They have 2 meals one is the set plated and the infinity meal, I opted for the infinity.. The grape juice was like 100% copy, other dishes were like any other typical south meal, quality was okay, taste was OK too.. But nothing exciting for me, felt the food had lot of soda in it and was making me heavy.. Will I go for lunch again, never.. Maybe for other dishes if I have no options only...

The south Indian thalis - served on banana leaf with holige on few days, is decent. Sambar, rasam, poori saagu etc were included. Saagu wasn't so great.

A calm place to have south Indian food if you're around here. It's quite spacious. It's on the first floor. The entrance to this place is through venkateshwara sweets which is located on the ground floor or through a narrow staircase. One can easily miss this place.

Udupi Sri Krishna Bhavan, Gandhi Bazar, Bengaluru

I has heard a lot about this place but couldn't go to this place as 'Vidyarthi Bhavan' didn't allow me to visit this place :D

Finally decided to visit this place, restaurant is located on first floor, ambiance is just like any other typical South Indian restaurant.

Heard that their Dosas are also good but it wasn't ready at that time so ordered Special Meals. Waiter asked me to sit in a dedicated Special Meals row. Though I expected then to wear South Indian attire, they were dressed like any other darshini, even I thought they will make sit on floor just like in temples but nope, it wasn't the scene. What met my expectation was food served on 'Plantain Leaf'. Let's not forget everything when all I need is tasty food.

I asked the waiter all items at one shot (except white rice) to take fit the meal in one frame. It will start from a glass of grape juice, bonda sambar, kosambari etc. Followed by Idly Chutney, forgot to mention that I went there at almost their closing time but chutney served left the restaurant long time, I mean it was spoilt.

Poori Saagu was really good and it was painful for me to go next item as poori was really yummy. Obbattu was good too, Huralikaayi Chitranna wasn't that bad. But what disappointed me was their main course! I expected Majjige Huli, Kublakayi Huli/sambar, rasam to be like what we have in Brahmin's marriage but sambar tasted just as normal as like in any other local mess.

Curd rice was tasty, kheer was passable. Overall nothing exceptional but you may enjoy the spread if you love food at regular mess. Service is slow, they will serve what you want but only if you call them otherwise they won't bother to attend you.

Price: 180rs

Generally legendary places have always failed to impress me, there were very exceptions and I would say this was one of them.

So here my critique rating given 4.5 which includes an additional mark for exceptional service on a crowded Sunday morning and not making you feel like it's your privilege for having allowed to eat here .

May be we were early birds (8:20AM) so didn't feel the heat as I could see a long queue waiting to get a bite of the food when we had done with.

Now coming to the food, we ordered idli vada, sagu masala, kesari bath and coffee.

Before the food came our request for hot water was quickly met with

Idli's (didn't taste the vada)5/5 Idli was not very soft or melting kind but felt like done traditionally by grinding the rice and black gram instead of rava, so the taste was very good. The sambar 5/5 was tasting excellent, I think it was of sweet pumpkin. Chutney 5/5 was perfectly made though nothing special such as pure coconut etc.

The timing was perfect, by the time we finished Idlis, Sagu masala dosa was served.

Sagu masaladosa 4.5/5 - Was crispy outside and soft inside, sagu was made of snake gourd, half mark deducted as it was very ordinary and could have been made aromatic with some nice spices, dosa went well along with Chutney. Our request for sambar was also promptly met in time though it was crowded. I recalled my mediocre experience with CTR in Malleshwara, I felt this place is far better than that.

Next comes the Kesari bath - 4/5 Was tasting good, nothing extraordinary but lived-up to it's name with cashews and raisins along with pineapple pieces. Right level of sweetness.

Coffee 4/5 - Tasting good with right amount of sugar.

Service - 5/5 Excellent service, quick and efficient, didn't find even one miss in the serving, the waiter was very enthusiastic and energetic to serve.

Need to try their lunch sometime (on the soda part mentioned in the preceding review, need to try my luck :-) .

Over all this is a must visit place which offers something different in terms of Dosa and Idli taste / feel / quality than the usual sagars and darshinis and in my opinion, scores overall far far better than the MTRs, CTR and Maiyas in all the areas.

So my recommendation, go for it . .

Have been visiting Balepet branch earlier and now in Gandhi bazar. Very courteous staff. Good taste who love and are pure vegitarians. Don't get fooled by words of non veg people whose taste buds are accustomed for only non veg items.

Go here if you want a typical karnataka brahmin lunch(more than 20 items) - i dare to say better than MTR.
The timings are a bit odd and service is slow.
Me being a thindi potha recomnend saagu masala dosa, poori and bonda soup.
The place is hygenic, prices are okay.

This is probably the best place in Basavanagudi to get an authentic South Indian meal. This is the branch of the legendary outlet in Balepet. Getting a parking spot in the close vicinity is next to impossible.More later on .........

One of the legendary restaurants in Basavanagudi. Simple ambience but spacious. Service is smooth and quick. Their sambar is typical Udupi style with loads of coconut and a little Jaggery (just the way I like it :-)). Vadas are crisp and dosas are roasted to perfection. Khara bhat has just the right amount of oil. Perfect for a quick breakfast. Their spl meals is highly rated but I am yet to try that. It's next in my list. The only problem is that they close by 8.30 pm. So make sure you get there in time.

One of the few old establishments dishing out the "crispy masala dosas" for the legendary bengaluru style crispy masala dosa lovers. Has stiff competition from nearby vidhyarthi bhavan. The "sagu masala dosas" are the speciality & must have.

This place is among my brother's favourites. Have been here a couple of times, and I don't really find it so appealing. Just a normal South Indian restaurant with weird timings.

Nice place with friendly staff. Service is a bit slow. I have tried their Masala dosa and idly. Both were pretty decent, but not exceptional. Their prices are pocket-friendly. They close by 8:30 pm, which is really early. I don't understand the logic behind such an early closure.

Food - 3/5
Ambiance - 3/5
Service - 3/5
Value for money - 4/5
Hygiene - 4/5
Overall - 3.5/5

A perfect place for South Indians to enjoy the perfect spread of South Indian meals! If you want to enjoy the food,be a little early to the place as the tables are occupied very soon. Ambience is very simple, the food is simple too but TASTY and very economical. Along with the normal meals that they offer, they also have Special south Indian meals (similar to that as MTR).
Apart from meals they also serve breakfast and tiffin items and if I have to tell a must try here it will be CURD VADA or DAHI VADA.

Had been here last Saturday(26/12) based on my colleague's suggestion just to have a cup of morning tea.

1. Tea was awesome ( less sugar yet tasty & refreshing ) which attracted me to write a quick review for this joint.
2.Staff behavior was really cordial even though we just ordered 1 coffee and 1 tea.
3. little costly for tea/coffee ( 18/- each)
4. ambiance was not bad and found a gentle crowd who don't create unnecessary sound while having food

When I get a chance again, surely will try this purely veg joint and change my rating further deemed fit. Thanku.

A Thali review
I have been wanting to write a review specifically about the special meals they serve for lunch. Always felt it was 'the dravid' of team basavanagudi, underrated amongst the other legends. 24, that is the number of items u get in your plate... Err.. Plantain, when u sign up for a special meal.
Holige/puran poli with ghee, vada or pakoda, kosumbari/salad, idli chutney, bonda soup, poori saagu, payasa/kheer, curries, unlimited rice, sambar, rasam, curd rice, and end the raja bhoga with a banana and betel. This is an absolute smasher of a meal, if u love authentic kannada brahmin fare.
Things to keep in mind:
1) on weekends be ready to wait 15-20 mins during peak lunchtime.
2) don't expect them to pamper you with their service, ask for what you want and don't feel ashamed.
Taste: 4
Service : 3.5( they do serve you fast and are prompt when u ask something)
Value for money: 4.5
Ambience: 3
Hygiene: 4

I've visited this restaurant quite a few times, at distant intervals in the last 5 years, owing to the distance from my house.

The signature 'Special Meals' is an excellent offering, served on a plantain leaf, replete with puri saagu, a variety of vegetables (pallya in Kannada), kosumbri and the soft and delicious kadabu for starters! The kadle holige (dal holige) is a consistent favourite and an integral part of the meal. Prices have constantly gone up, from Rs. 120 in 2011 to Rs. 180 now. The meal, though is well worth the money charged.

Their breakfast is good too, especially the masala dosas which, smeared with red chutney on the inside, do pack a punch.

Clean and hygienic, functional ambience. Only complaint being the lack of restrooms.

For the price you pay, this restaurant serves you really good food. Their authentic Udupi Brahmin style lunch can be pretty heavy. The lunch is served on banana plantain and you even get to taste 'Moode'.

Been visiting this place from a lot of years for breakfast. It'll be fully occupied during the weekend. But the road construction currently going on has made the restaurant relatively empty. Although they are famous for their Sagu Dosas, I find it slightly underwhelming, still prefer their Masala Dosas. They are good. But my favorite thing to eat here is their Badam Halwa. I never miss it whenever I go there. The service is okay. And price is just as you'd expect from a place of this type.

Another best restaurant to have an authentic food. Typical classic South Indian restaurant! Popular restaurant from old bengaluru days located at Gandhi Bazaar. Almost all food items especially Idly, dosas with spicy chutney and tasty sambhar are very delicious and priced moderately. We had Masala Dosa, idly vada Sambar dip, kesari bath, Kara bath... badam halwa... all are great and fully recommended.

Service and food are excellent during lunch hours. However, this is not a place to visit for dinner. Lack of options during dinner and service time was painfully a lot longer than anticipated. Banana leaf lunch is classic and delicious! A must try.

One of the few places that serve sagu dosé. That too in the morning. The diced navilokosu and carrots in coconut gravy are an underrated stuffing in the dosé. Badam halwa is also a must try here.

Came here based on a friend's suggestion. If you are looking for Bangalore type South Indian veg meal, you would love it! Well, it is really not a meal but a feast! It has a daily juice, starters, starting sweet, a spread out multi course meal with pulav/lemon rice or such, followed by Puris and the usual rice with sambar, rasam closing with curd rice and payasam after that. There is also paan and banana towards the end. The service is very fast and polite and there is explanation of the things being served! The place is nice, good washrooms, though gets crowded! Absolute visit, if you like this kind of food!

Tired of eating idli vada without sambar ..then this is the hotel to be at . The idli vada SAMBAR is good Sambar is little thick and not so sweet nor spicy but it's perfect sambar i would say The masala Dosa is presented in an oblique way The Rava idli is good too with perfect blend of fresh coconut makes it even better (adding ghee on top of rava idli would be better ) but Saagu quality could be improved Overall a nice experience
