Awesome.. rustic and authentic eatery from our old bengaluru.. it was nostalgic...

Just like our village Style..

First they serve you with hot water to wash hands..

They ask you to place bottle caps so that sambar stay at another side so that you can dip it properly..

Then they serve citrom like pickle or yerlikai uppinkai which is delicious

Ragi mudhe is kneeded and served to the size you want.. and it's is unlimited..

They serve hurli happala or a fryum which is very good

Next they serve sambar and vegetable side dish

They also serve rice, rasam and buttermilk.. all are simple and good

Price is 90/-

Masala Vada is RS. 10/- which is also great

This place is a definite go in when you are around majestic

Mudde Madappa mess was established almost a century back and is very popular among locals for decades now. My brother and cousin's obsession over mudde led us here for a weekend dinner.

Ambiance:
-It has the look and feel of old Bangalore restaurants/mess.
-It is more crowded on weekdays than weekends.

Service:
-Coupon should be bought at the cash counter.
-Waiters pour hot water in glasses with which we should clean our hands and plates(already clean) and then wipe it off to make sure mudde doesn't stick to the plate. And then a bottle cap is put under the plate to make sure Sambar stays at one end of the plate :P
-Then in no time, mudde and meals will be on the plate.

Food:
Ragi mudde meals--
-Ragi mudde(Ragi ball): Softest and best mudde I have had till date:)
-Rice Rasam: Pepper rasam served with rice here was okay, I've had better.
-Buttermilk: Loved it:) Perfect end to a filling meal.

Conclusion:
-This just cost Rs.90 per head and is worth every penny as the meals are unlimited and of-course delicious and healthy.

Vegetarian Mudde meal is an oxymoron to someone for whom the food is not native. That is mudde which is supposed to be dunked into lots of gravy and swallowed rather than chewed is kind of best married to yummy mutton and chicken gravies. So I was a bit hesitant to try this mudde vegetarian place.

But I did and I am glad I did not miss out on the lovely experience as it is kind of a different serving style. This place is managed by many senior citizens it looked like, courteous and efficient. You need to buy a coupon of Rs. 80 for the meal. Someone seats you and there is this big steel plate with a glass of hot water placed on the plate. The water is for washing your hands, and it is hotter than your hand requires so take your time to wash slowly and carefully into the bucket a lady gets next to your table (very crude version of Rajdhani), the good part is that you get to wash your plate with the hot water and pour it into the bucket as well.

Then it starts – the continuous and quick serving of the food – pickle, papad, subzi (radish when I went) and then there is a guy who comes to your table and carves a mid size ragi mudde (ball) from within a humongous ragi ball and this is followed by unlimited dal with soppu (greens). You can have unlimited ragi mudde, dal (or sambhar as they refer to it) and subzi. Only the papad costs extra if you want more...I liked the taste of this papad. After your are done eating copious amounts of sambhar and subzi with the mudde, you can have copious amounts of rasam with rice.Buttermilk follows, not sure if this is unlimited. The service is very efficient and quick, they keep coming at you with the food. And they actually try to coax you to eat more. You will not get a chance to glance away from your plate – the food is simple, homely, fresh, hot. Once you feel stuffocated, on an especially hot Bangalore day, you can stop eating and go to the wash basin.

The guy who manages the serving operation is an older man dressed in formals and he takes his job seriously. Keeps ensuring the servers are going to the right table in time when you are about to run out of an item…so it’s just in time service. This man reminds me of those overseeing a wedding lunch service or even that one person who takes charge when the whole wedding party bus has stopped somewhere to have lunch.😀

The place is small and furniture mid to old. The cleaning ladies stand in sight to be ready to clean right after you get up. This I found disconcerting and not very palatable.

The senior citizen cashier is welcoming and he suggested I come back again on a Monday (yes, they are open) or a Friday, that is when they have the best items.

The entry is via a building that looks like a smaller apartment complex and you have to walk through the parking area to find this place. There are enough direction signs once you find the place on the main road.

When I was searching for a place for lunch to have something different. I had got to know about this place from a foodie blog. This mess is inside a building. I had gone there for a Sunday afternoon lunch. I had to get a token for meals and once I saw the place I was very much surprised as it was so simple mess. But as people say don't judge the place by the looks. The moment lunch was started to serve for me I was in for a treat. Here is the place where you would get hot Ragi Mudde unlimited with the typical Karnataka style Sambar. It was the best Ragi Mudde I had till date. Also, they serve rice and sambar which was also very tasty. The final touch which I was impressed the most was the unlimited buttermilk which made my meals complete. I was also impressed by their service as there was no fuss and it was all neat and simple.

Please do give this mess a try whenever you want to have the famous traditional Ragi Mudde and you will make sure you will be a regular customer here once you give a shot for sure.

Soft ragi mudde which definitely tastes better than what I tasted elsewhere. Sambar is spicy with leaves, tastes good something like a diluted version of Andhra pappu. Papad pickle and chana palya seems limited. Didnt get buttermilk in the meal. For Rs.80 per meal, it is filling with unlimited ragi mudde and rice.

WHAT THEHEEBEE SAYS :
One Sunday we were visiting Gandhinagar for some work and wondering to have lunch at another popular joint in that area. But senior Food Blogger - Naveen Suresh recommended us to have lunch at Mudde Madappa Mess and assured us that it will be an experience worth doing. We are very thankful to him for the suggestion. The experience was delightful and will stay in our memories for a very long time.

The mess exists since 1926 and has been serving delicious Ragi Mudde (Red Millet Balls). It is very popular among the pure vegetarians who are Ragi Mudde fans.

AT THE FIRST STEP :

While at Gandhinagar, we asked 4 individuals about location/address of this place. Everyone was prompt in guiding us. This shows the popularity that the place has. On reaching the location, it was little difficult to locate the place as it is housed in a very old building. The building looks as if it has not seen even a whitewash for years. There is a very old board which speaks out the name of the mess in Kannada (Local Language). Yes, we had to literally enter and inquire if we are at the correct location? We could not believe ourselves.

The place was completely empty as it was Sunday noon. We were told that on a week-day you would need to wait in a queue to get your turn at a table. The gentleman at the cash counter is one of the family members who runs the mess for ages. He is an absolute gem of a person and makes it very comfortable for the guests. He helped us understand the benefits of Ragi and how one month of Ragi meal will detox and transform an individual. He made us comfortable at one of the tables and then was there with us throughout to explain how to eat the meal. We are very thankful to him for all the guidance and hospitality.

AMBIANCE :

Its an old mess like setup. The place looks old and very clearly it shows that no efforts are taken to modernize it. The table and chair are also of old style. We could even spot old style ceiling-fan regulators. But all this gives that rustic feeling to the place and its worth to see how the mess were in those golden old days, during those times all this would had been very modern.

There is a separate cash counter from which everyone needs to purchase the food coupon. On one side is the kitchen. On the other side is a handwash area which was little dirty.

WHAT THEHEEBEE TRIED :

We went with the recommendation of the gentleman and bout coupons for Ragi Mudde Meals.

He asked us to occupy a front table so that he can guide us through our food journey.

As we made ourselves comfortable on one of the old table and chairs, one of the staff members brought shining steel plates and glasses. The plates and glasses were still wet so we pulled out handkerchief to wipe those. That is when the gentleman asked us to wait. One staff member came with a jug full of hot water and filled everyone's glasses up to half level. We were told to use that hot boiling water to clean our hands, plates and glasses -- and this is 'WOW'. It became so comfortable to see the novel way of hygiene.

Once the plate were cleaned, one staff member put a pet bottle cap under everyone's plate. This was an ingenious idea to ensure that the liquid food items like Sambar and Rasam stay accumulated at one part of the plate, making it very easy to eat.

One person came carrying a very very big ball of Ragi Mudde. From this, he gave smaller balls to every customer in their plate. Ragi Mudde was very fresh and steaming hot.

Then we were served Pickle, Palya (Dry Pulses Preparation) and Vegetable Sambar(Spicy Indian Lentil Soup with Vegetables). The gentleman taught us how to eat Ragi Mudde and Sambar - first wet your fingers in sambar, then pull out little Ragi, if needed soak in Sambar again and then..... gulp it!! We were also served a very delicious and spicy Papad (Thin Crisp Lentil Wafers) and Rasam (Spicy and watery Lentil & Tamarind Soup).

Once we were done with our Ragi Mudde, we were asked if we need more? Those who wanted more were served another helping. Rest of us went for Rice. Steaming hot rice was put over the Sambar and then we were asked for a choice - Sambar or Rasam? We mixed the Rice with Sambar and Rasam and relished it along with Papad.

Finally a glass full of Majjige (Spiced Butter Milk with Onions) to pack up!!

SERVICE :

Hospitality was excellent. Everyone from the owner till the staff was very helpful and eager to make you eat satisfactorily.

Cost for meal for two is 140 Rs.

NOTE : The building is going to be demolished soon and the mess is getting shifted to a temporary nearby location. Once the new building comes up then they will again shift it here. Anyone who feels to get the experience of this decades old mess... please hurry up!!

Nested in an ancient building which hasn't seen a makeover in years in the bustling Gandhinagar area, a red tape sticker announces that you have entered the famous "Mudde Madappa Mess".  An elderly man sitting in the cash counter is ready to dole out coupons from the desk in front of him. The options are few; we opt for the "Ragi Mudde Oota" and "Masala Vade". Per person this works out to around 80 INR.

We are shown our tables, after having our hands washed in a stinking washroom. The tables are ancient, like the building, but the plates are of shining stainless steel. Each table has already been laid out for customers, with plates and a glass of warm water, which we were told has to be used to clean the plates for the sake of hygiene. Once we are done with cleaning our plates, we are served the Ragi Mudde. A person carries a huge ball of Ragi Mudde, from which he carefully carves smaller balls and places it on our plates. The "Mudde" is served hot with "Vegetable Sambhar" (Vegetable stew/broth), "Kaalu Playa" (dry curry made from sprouts), pickle, "Paapad" (Crisp Lentil Crepe) and "Masala Vade" (Lentil and Green based fritter).

The Ragi Mudde is delicious and makes for an awesome meal with the Vegetable Sambhar. The experience is of culinary exuberance that one should experience for sure. I opted for a second ball of Ragi Mudde, albeit a smaller one. Once we are done with the Muddes, we are served steamed Rice to be had with the residual Vegetable Sambhar. This can be followed by another serving of steamed rice to be had with Rasam and/or Buttermilk. The meal is "all-you-can-eat" or what is known in the local parlance as "Unlimited". The Rasam was strong with flavors while the buttermilk was cool enough to quench our thirst and wash down the food.

The service is good and the people waiting on us are loud but courteous. The whole place has an old charm of a bygone era that adds to the rustic ambience to the whole experience. The food is highly satisfying and sumptuous. The wallet factor is not an issue as the meal is available at very affordable rates. The reason I am not venting out my problem with the building or the stinking washrooms is because the place is soon to be shifted to a new location nearby. I would like to visit the new venue of this eatery and then comment about their hygiene and maintenance. As of now, it is bad.

But, if you are a foodie, this is one place that should not be missed. Note - "NOT TO BE MISSED".

Location - it's right in front of u when you're on that main road.. But u won't spot it. Entrance is like a old paper mart or a building under renovation.

First look - it's like a big empty old fashioned reception hall .. Lined up chairs and tables.. awaiting guests.

Primary expectations - hope to get decent food in such a place..

Stage set - it was interesting that a self assumed admin from pantry was rounding up every customer to one corner and asking them to occupy tables sequentially.. Bottle caps given to each plate.. Ingenious way to have elevated plate to avoid 'saar' from flowing all round the plate.. You get served with one glass of boiling water to clean the plate to your satisfaction.

Judgment hour - mudde.. Hapla.. Saar.. Usli.. Pickles.. Rice .. Rasam.. Buttermilk... phew!! Surprise, it's unlimited. Blown away.. Wonderful authentic south Karnataka food.

Recommended! #visiting again

Mudde madappa hotel- A pure veg hotel with best ragi mudde in the town .This is a restaurant tucked away in between the busy streets of Gandhinagar in Bangalore. It's definitely not haute cuisine, but if you wanted a taste of the everyday gruel that most Kanandigas enjoy, it's the best place. Located on the road parallel to the national market road (can't recall the name now!), the name that most people know the restaurant by is practically invisible and is overshadowed by the prominently displayed ‘G M Boarding & Restaurant’. If you weren't looking for it you could mistake it for one more of the cheap and ubiquitous darshinis/fast food joints that populate the city and give it the go by.

The best place to have a vegetarian 'ragi ball' meal . Most of other 'mess' type restaurants that serve 'ragi ball' meals are normally non-veg establishments.

The restaurant ambiance is quite simple and no much frills. The service is very good and staff very forthcoming.
This is 'the' place to go for a hearty and tasty 'ragi ball' meal.

The only vegetarian restaurant around in Bangalore which serves Mudde (Ragi Balls). The sad part with most of the reviewers who feel that the ragi balls tastes bland just do not know how to eat. Ragi balls are meant to be swallowed without relishing in the mouth (no chewing/no biting). Hence, bland or not, ragi balls are to be relished only on the basis of the side dishes alone.

I have been to Madappa Mess, the legendary restaurant, umpteen number of times, right from my young days as a practising junior advocate. The number tables are limited and a queue system is followed for seating the guests.  The servings are unlimited (my wife relishes the ragi balls so much that she never takes anything other than ragi balls). Such hot, soft, fluffy balls, one just needs to dip it in a sambhar and swallow without a hitch. Definitely not a restaurant for North Indians or first time ragi ball fans or for those who believe that food must be chewed well before swallowing, but you should try it anyways, if you are well informed about the eating habits and ways of farmers in rural Karnataka.

The only thing this place lacks, is more tables. It's an old school mess owned by a couple of lovely senior citizens, who are helped by a rag-tag yet efficient staff. Mind you, it is a mess so don't go in looking for ambience. It's barely crowded in the mornings, but during lunch there's often a 20-30 minute wait involved and you'll inevitably end up sharing a table unless you're a party of four!

Madhappa mess has been my breakfast spot for most part of the last four years. And it was my favorite lunch spot, till I got married and started taking a lunch box :)

Walked in four years ago just because of the taste-bud awakening smell that was wafting out onto the footpath on the busy gandhinagar road. What followed was not just an excellent (and cheap!) meal, but an experience that has kept calling me there regularly till date.

The staff clearly recognized I'm new to their establishment and explained to me that I must formally 'clean' my plate with the hot water given.
Then comes an onslaught of tasty food that's completely cooked in house - including the pickle. For a fixed price (now Rs.70) you get unlimited amounts of ragi mudde, rice, sambhar, some sort of bean, pickle, and one helluva tasty papad!

Easily one of the oldest running home-grown restaurants that makes one promise and delivers - hot tasty food and nothing else.

Although it's most popular for serving the best ragi mudde meals in the world (I guarantee) for almost 50 years, over the past two years I've come to love the home cooked tasting breakfast foods like-
Tatte idli,
khali dosa,
akki roti,
lemon rice,
and the extremely tasty n crispy daal vada.

Go here for Mudde and Soppu saru - Best u can get in Bangalore (And cheap too... 60 rs for a meal)

Taste - Very good

This restaurant has its own identity and process
They give hot water before serving the food, this is to clean the plate ....
There are some senior people who monitor the restaurant and doesnt like anyone wasting food... So make sure you dont have anything in the plate when you get up...
Sometimes you need to wait for more time, because they don't start serving until one row is filled

Other stuff with the meal - Rice, rasam, buttermilk, and a palya (some gram curry) and Lemon pickle (real bitter pickle) with a roasted pappad (different - wont get this type anywhere)

The place is very hygienic, though the plates are clean they still provide hot water to clean the plates yourself. Also masala vada (not included in meals) available at extra cost. Difficult to get parking. Will try breakfast/snacks on my next visit.

Went to this restaurant for lunch on a weekday at about 1 pm and it was not crowded. This restaurant is about 10 minutes walking distance from majestic bus stand . Nearest bus stop to this restaurant is Anand Rao circle bus stop Took meals here and it costed Rs 120 . We have to first make payment for meals here. When we sit on tables, in steel glass in front of us they will be pour hot water, this hot water is for pouring on the already cleaned plate. A person will come with a small steel bucket and that hot water must be poured in that bucket. For 120 Rs they serve unlimited ragi mudde, bassaru, a palya, a pickle, rice. buttermilk and a spicy pappad(pappad only one will be served). Everything tasted good . Palya and butter milk was excellent. As per me Rs 120 rs is overpriced , but quality of food is good and service is also great. If anyone is near majestic bus stand and want to eat ragi mudde then they can choose this restaurant. For travel/food pictures and information plz follow my insta account. Insta id @shenoypradeep

One of the best authentic Karnataka food. Ragi mudde oota. Best quality food. You will Never feel like hotel food. Its a pakka home made food.. Owner and staffs are so humble to service the food . One thing is they charge Rs 120/- for unlimited full meal its bit costly and they can add one sweet like different verify of payasa each day and they can also provide one fruit like banana. Overall my best veg meal hotel around ghandi nagar.

Located within an apartment complex at the far end of the parking lot is the Madappa mess. The place had handful number of customers as I entered but within minutes, it was so crowded that there were no empty tables left. At the entrance is the counter where you are required to purchase a token (a slip) for the mudde oota which is 80 Rs. I was directed to a table where a plate with a half filled hot water was awaiting my arrival. One of the staff guided me with the process of washing my plate which by all means looked clean to me. I followed the protocol as he bought a bucket for me to dispose of the water in my plate. A pickle was served first followed by a palya again preprepr using some millets. The mudde or the raggi balls was served with bus saru. The raggi balls were very soft and the texture was just perfect. You can ask for any number of serves as it's unlimited meals. There's also rice when you are done with mudde along with rasam and buttermilk served with the rice. Overall a good experience for a very decent price.

68 years old Vegetarian delight in Gandhinagar- Bengaluru Mr Basavanna who was employed in a govt sector in Bengaluru brought his unemployed Madappa from his native Hallikere hundi near chamarajnagar and setup a restaurant in majestic area to help people with affordable food ₹3.5 full meals back then. Madappa managed the restaurant under the supervision of Basavanna. Founder Basavanna who is 92 years old is seen in picture wearing white shirt. Now his last brother(blue shirt) and Madappa's son(grey shirt) are managing the restaurant all three, along with Madappa's photo are seen in one picture. They serve one of the best desi food i.e. Raagi muddhe in Bengaluru with humble hospitality. Apparantly they also provide one of the best Citron pickles, just yumm!!

A legacy restaurant serving meals with traditional ragi balls. The ragi balls and accompanying sambar have the traditional flavor. The culture of serving hot water before the meals is unique to this place. Rice, rasam and buttermilk also taste great. Price is nominal. A must visit to savor the traditional ragi ball meals.
