Ujwal
This is one of the oldest joint for most of the bachelor’s and as well for people who are looking to have the sea food at an affordable price.
This place is packed on weekends and except in family room you will not get any place for even seating. They have 3 outlets, one of them in Sanjay Nagar, second one at RT nagar and the third at Vasanth Nagar.
The decor is the same as it was when it was launched but the food is amazing and the people are more friendly.
Ideal for a fast lunch is the Fish 🐟 Thali or the 🐓 Chicken Thali. When you add a starter to it then the perfect meal. You also have option to choose the variety of 🍚 Rice.
Chicken ghee roast, tender chicken must try
Best ghee roast chicken I’ve ever tasted, chicken calling 🐓 it’s family restaurant totally so good to go if you want to have yummy food with good price!
Superb food quality and taste. Will recommend to everyone. Clean parcel. Good behaviour from the servers. Good Response for our expectations.
This place is a value for money. But remember to sit in the family section. It satisfies my biryani cravings at a good price. Try the chicken dum biryani and tender coconut chicken.
Don't forget to the neer dosa and tomato chutney curry 💯.

Nyc to have dinner with ur loved one 😍 Tq Ujwal nd team to give such good service to the customers!!!
cool ..I know this restaurant have visited many times there as it is near by and it's still the same way authentic.
The food is value for money. Coconut chicken, crab curry, chicken ghee roast, mutton dishes, neer dosa-coconut chutney, anjal fish tawa fry are some of the must try dishes. The alcohol is very affordable! Over a must visit place
Superb taste.... Chicken Tikka, egg masala, egg chili was awesome..
Pot Biryani😋#mutton
Chicken ghee roast👅 at its best.
The side are ultimate and impressive food texture too!
PS: Bar come restaurant but u can find a family section
The best pot biryani u can get and the best place for drinks and for food
Great place for a day out with your buddy, been my best hangout place for a long time. Coconut chicken and matka birayani is to die for. Sea food is also awesome.
Went with my buddy 05 months ago, food is good but the service is bit a slower, Value for money to have liquor here, I had older some peanut masala & masala papad for a lite snacks, if guys are beer lovers pls go with a 650 ml bottles it will be worth, nice place to have a quick drinks @ this locality
Mostly have visited this place with friends to get drunk at reasonable price 😉.
Food is good overall ambiance is good if you are a gang of guys with low budget it’s a good place with good food and courteous staff.
It's a best place in the locality with speciality in Mangalore cuisine. The ground and 1st floor allows smoking on the table, however they have a non smoking AC section in first floor for families. The food is good though, expect local decent crowd and the staff is bit under trained.
They serve liquor on 30ml 60ml basis, so bit expensive than a local bar who serve at MRP 😄. The ambience in 1st floor is better than ground if you want to smoke as it is a semi open terrace. This is the best bar and restaurant you can find in the locality.
Coconut tender chicken -- Must try
neer dosa - recommended
Other items are having decent taste !! Staffs are friendly and polite.
don't go for Lemon chicken !!

Ujwal is a frequent go to place for anyone around Sanjay Nagar or RMV, and for good reason.
They serve some really good food. Though the tender coconut chicken is their most popular dish, I would recommend their seafood as the better option. Fish fry with neer dosa is a must try, with the fish tawa fry brining in that sour and spicy Mangalorean coastal flavour.
The prawn biriyani that is served with a coastal curry is another must try.
The service is a little slow, however they also deliver. Prices are very much on the budget side, which makes Ujwal all the more attractive. Come here for the spicy coastal comfort food.
To begin with the Ambience, a neatly maintained place with good number of seatings available ground floor is the bar and first floor family restaurant so nothing to worry about if you also go with your family here but the place is too dim so people who don't like a dull atmosphere might not like the Ambience here, good staffs too.
Now about the food when you want to taste authentic non veg ujwal is definitely a place to think about their signature dish tender coconut kebab is absolutely something to talk about, right amount of spice for you to fall in love with it, the quantity is worth every penny, coming to the service which we felt was very slow took almost around 20 min to get each dish.
A must visit if you want to enjoy your drink as well as a great food.
Value for money 4/5
Ambience 4/5

Went there on a friend's suggestion just to try their tender coconut chicken.
Place from outside might look it's not a family restaurant. But they have separate section for families who come there just for their food .
We ordered tender coconut chicken, lemon chicken , chicken lamba, chicken ghee roast and neer dosas
Chicken lamba was a no for me I dint like it I kinda dint like the masala in it .
Lemon chicken and chicken ghee roast tasted well it was yum . Neer dosa and chicken ghee roast crazy combination.
But the ultimate dish was the tender coconut chicken. The name might give u confusion on the dish .. but all ll love the taste .. uniquely cooked and presented .. green color chicken with capsicums .
Must try dish
It is not just a restaurant or bar . It is more than that , you see same people on those tables everyday at same time . Everyone has their own table where they turn up . It is place where we friends catch up for a drink or you can get your family to upstairs family room . One thing guaranteed is great service and food , reasonably priced alcohol . One of few bars in Bangalore where food is great unlike most ones where food is bad or existent in only finger food format . The trouble to drink as much as you can till 1 am and then head to empire for pathetic food or get parcel seems to be fashion now . You can save all that trouble here by having both good food and alcohol and save your self some sleep and having bad food in empire or oily/ greasy food in imperial

Visited this place on Sunday. Service was not as per our expectation. We tried Coconut Tinder Chicken , Gobi Manchurian fot starter. Coconut Tinder Chicken was spicy & tasty. This is the most famous dish of this restraunt. For the main course , you can try Kadai Chicken & Paneer Tikka Masala .
Cost for 4 : Around 2400
I love this place for the coconut chicken, chicken 🍗 ghee roast and the stuffed kulcha! 👌
If you're here, you gotta try them!! I've never been to the restaurant myself but I've ordered from here a lotta times. Their service is prompt and the delivery is always on time.
This was the first visit to this restaurant. Good experience ambience was good but our friends had not likd the food ......................
Amazing place to have some authentic Mangalore dishes. Loved their neer dosa with tomato curry, and Crab masala is heavenly you would go there for it again and again. Pot biriyanis are awesome too, make sure you order it in advance and ask them to get it at the end of your course ,as they run out quick.
Tender coconut chicken is awesome too.
The food is really excellent. The KANE fish curry is very good. The food is modest, service quick and staff courteous.KODI curry is good and worth trying.Sea food is their specialty and these people excel in that...
Food for 2 costs aroundRs 600/-
Best in Sanjaynagar. Very good coastal cuisines. Only issue Is with higher end seafood items which I feel little over priced. Else real good place
My friends at IISc took me to this place on a weekend. Nothing special about the ambiance.. It's definitely not a place to take your family or girl friend.
Overall the food was good, I liked the seafood here. Specially the crab was awesome, the meat was fresh, tender and well cooked.
The price for food & beverages were decent. For 4 people the bill came around 2500 which was perfectly value for money.
10/10 for their Pot Chicken Biriyani (served in an earthen pot and mixed with juicy chicken pieces) and Tender Coconut Kabab (which is served inside a coconut shell)
And not only their presentation, which is unique and attractive, but also the taste of food is upto the mark. Though I must mention, I was disappointed with their fish curry meal. Priced at 120 bucks the taste was completely bland, though I can't blame them as you hardly get fresh fish in the land locked city of Bangalore.
I have also heard that their Lemon Chicken is awesome and definitely visiting again to try that.
Wow writing this review just brings back memories and excites my tastes buds.
When in college I discovered this place a bit late but when I did I never looked where else.
There reason we used to go there was for one reason and one reason also "THE POT BIRYANI" . we used to come here on the first floor semi open segment which was a bit shaady for some drinks and then gobble over the amazing Biryani . we even tried thier fish on recommendation and it was good .
Many times we even ordered Ala-Carte and it was great too.
They have a a family section toi switch is well lit up.
Best is the coconut chicken.. Ghee roast chicken is so so yummy... And to top it all is the butter garlic chicken.. I can't complain about this place.. Everything is too good and just perfect..
Food is awsome like the tender Chiken, pander tikka or the Chiken tikka.good place to chill out with friends with a drink .separate section for family available too..
Bar attached restaurant with some delicious food. Try the tender coconut chicken, butter chicken garlic, Chicken Green garlic, Chicken hari mirch is one unique dish to try for sure.
Went here yesterday with my friend. Being a girl, I along with my friend were instantly directed towards the Family section on the first floor. Having already had some mango lassi at Patiala Lassi nearby, we ordered the recommended Tender Coconut Chicken Kabab and one Veg Thali.
The tender coconut kebabs were exquisite. The taste doesn't come close to anything I've had before, though the spices have the distinctive Mangalorean touch to it. The chicken was soft and well marinated with the spices and tender coconut flavor and was very filling.
The person who took the order forgot about the Veg Thali and had to be reminded about the same. For 80 bucks, the quantity was good, as expected in a typical thali. Taste wise, it was quite ordinary.
The bill was 210+80 for two. I think I'll get food delivered from here next time. The ambiance is so-so and the interiors are like those of a typical family restaurant.
Saw the review of this restaurant a while and was planning to pay to visit and taste the Tender Coconut Kebab.
Finally got the chance to visit this place with my friend and was surprised for the taste of the foods.
The ambiance is not that good they really need to work a lot more on the ambiance it kinda looks like a local bar and restaurant during the night time. But should take you away from going to this place. This place had really got some amazing taste buds.
MUST TRY
1. Tender Coconut Chicken (AWESOME TASTE & PRESENTATION)
2. Jeera Rice
3. Roti Breads With Chicken Gravy
Ambiance 2/5
Food 4/5
Service 3.5/5
Price 3.5/5
Ujwal is the place to go to when craving affordable alcohol and spicy coastal fare. True to its conspicuous sign of 'family restaurant', it has separate sections for the 'bachelors' and for groups consisting of any women. I have experienced both sections and found the general section on the first floor much better in terms of airiness and service, but yes the family section probably makes for a more overall comfortable experience for us ladies.
The menu is has a huge variety of items listed, but we've mostly tried their signature items like the Uruval Chicken and Tender Coconut Chicken. I wouldn't really recommend the Uruval unless your digestive system has a supernatural ability to deal with spices! The relatively more balanced tasting Tender Coconut Chicken, is uniquely served in a real tender coconut shell (though unfortunately not cooked in it also, I guess), and goes well with Neer Dosas, provided the chicken is indeed tender and fresh! However, our uncontested favorite at Ujwal is the Rava coated Silverfish Fry, of which we we can never have enough... crispy fried, 'melt in the mouth' whole fish: the perfect accompaniment to chilled beer!
Not a place that one would want to come to for 'ambiance', but a few beers later and with the amazingly encouraging bill amounts... you are bound to go home, happy!!!
If its sea food or true mangaloren food u crave for, this place is surely one of the best in terms of value. The place is very good for family, friends n even couples. I recommend mangaloren dishes like the tava fry fish, all of which r fresh, prawns fry, chicken kori rotti . coconut chicken is a must try at this place.

Dont let the shady ambience of this place put you off. This place serves the BEST mangalorian dishes ever. The tender coconut chicken makes me drool just thinking about it. The food is perfect. Wish they did something about the ambience. Its primarily a bar and all the food accompanies and compliments the alcohol brilliantly. But I would have liked to just go to this place and enjoy their food without feeling super conscious!
They could at least increase their home delivery radius :/
Food 4.5/5
Ambience 2/5
Ujwal is a restaurant version of a 'guy flick'; where in if a girl doesn't mind it, you go ahead and marry her.
Jokes apart, some of the typical Manglorean starters served here that are best had with beer are pretty good. 'Tender Coconut chicken', one of the best examples, also gets full points for serving creativity (inside an actual tender coconut!). Their 'Pot Biriyani' is a close second, inside a maida-lidded earthen pot and tastes good too. 'Prawn sukka' also deserves a special mention. Vegetarians don't have much of a choice in the local cuisine.
The hotel has 3 sections with 2 air conditioned 'family' sections, one on the ground and the other on the first floor both mostly sparsely populated. First floor also has a semi-open area which seems almost always full with solitary drinking uncles watching some really random music videos on the television.
That said, I've been here a bunch of times, with girls as a part of the group, and it's always been safe and comfortable.
I have been kind of a regular to this place for last 3-4 yrs. Recently the place was revamped and now its more presentable. It's a huge place with ground and 1st floor seating area and a separate AC area which is normally empty, rest of the place if always atleast 80% full. Thats also because it's the only decent restaurant/bar in the Sanjaynagar area. Finding parking can be little tricky for 4 wheeler, but you can park it in any adjacent residential lanes.
Coming to food, quality of the food has been pretty consistent over time. Coconut chicken(starter) is one of best dishes and haven't heard any other restaurants serving it. Try their rajasthani Tikka and pot biryani if you are a first timer. They are mangalorean so their fish preparations are pretty decent too, personally i like Anjal tawa fry. Chicken ghee roast is not bad either, neer dosa and the chicken curry should be tried too if you are here. Veg starters are good too, I never thought I would rave about dal khichdi, but its pretty good and works well if you had few too many drinks :)
All n all nice place to grab some drinks with good food, light on pocket and service at this place is good too, no service charge gimmick. After the filling meal you will genuinely feel like tipping. They have 2 other branches in RT nagar n Miller road, but the Sanjaynagar one is the best.
A gem. A not-so-hidden gem, but certainly one which might have done better had it done more about its general image. The 'and bar' sign (and what it means ) is not appreciated by many. That is a problem because the food is exotically Indian! Tender Coconut Kebab is a must try. So is Chettinadu Chicken. As far as naans or rotis are concerned, don't bother going for the more expensive breads. The flavour of the bread wouldn't matter, when compared the strong and overpowering flavours in the other dishes.
Took home delivery from Ujwal, tried their tender coconut kebab, both chicken and paneer versions, it actually comes in a tender coconut shell. The chicken is soft and the green masala is spicy, I quite liked it. Also ordered pot dum chicken biryani, which was quite tasty. Never seen the restaurant from inside or been there, but I am definitely going to try some mangalorean dishes next time from them.
Tender Coconut Chicken Kabab is awesome... Should try this without fail.. yummy :-)
It's a decent place.. The food was good.. The service was good.. But nothing really amazed me.. But I wouldn't say it's a bad place to eat..
Biriyani ,kababs, r awesome here
Must try.........
Well., it's been a long 7yrs stay in sanjaynagar, and when it comes to food specially sea food., there can be nothing other than Ujwal. in the past 7 yrs, I have no complaint about the quality of food served and never felt sick after eating here. A regular with a drink is to try tender coconut chicken., chicken n mushroom green garlic and a delicacy of varitey fish. Not to forget to taste the fish masala fry., any fish though., the most tastiest masala and the south canara special neer dose along with kundapur chicken is a deadly combination., which brings water out of my mouth just by the thought...., so well., will keep going and eating my variety of flavours in Ujwal :-)

the food is really great in here... tender coconut kabab the best they serve them literally in a coconut shell.... and its authentic.... the price is really nominal and for that food u can pay more than wat they ask for... the place is really decent with a decent ambiance... ghee roast and pepper dry are some of the signature dishes...
The TENDER COCONUT CHICKEN KABAB they make is what makes me go here again and again.
Other good items here:
Veg Green Garlic.
Pot Biryani
Neer Dosa
Moodae
negatives:
- if you are bunch of 4 guys they wont let u sit in the Non-AC Family section... though u are welcome in the AC- Family section.
- hardly any girls visit
Over the last year or so, I seemed to have developed this penchant for visiting, drinking, dining at offbeat, underdog restaurants & watering holes. And if I may claim so, it has been a quite a success to boast about! Of course, folks around will visit and review the "best of best" which will trend for a while and take a detour as a sinking ship.
But there are a few, which will maintain their legendary status for a long time, perhaps being addressed as immortals. I will fail my inner conscience if I don't review Ujwal.
Ujwal (category favourite) visibly located on the Sanjaynagar main road is in the heart of the vicinity. Ask anybody and I mean any of your friends or family in the neighbourhood, they will tell you about the place. Parking will be a problem in all the wrong places, especially for the four wheeled motors during a weekend. You may have to drive a lap or two before finding a pit stop.
THE EXPERIENCE - A typical evening in the restaurant
There are two levels for drinking and dining & and an exclusive air conditioned section for the family (one will see quite a few families visiting).
Our (with friends) evening on Saturdays are largely spent here, right from dusk to a few mins before midnight! Alright, seems to be getting more philosophical & personal more than a 'review'.
A model patron(s) will begin the affair light by ordering a few drinks (standard measure - 60 ml (liquor) and a packet of local chips (salt or spiced) / peanut Masala. The peanuts are ok and remain crunchy for a long time.
The momentum gains, the adrenaline rushes after an additional batch of guys jam in. After your quick appetizer and feeling of having downed couple of drinks, you now elevate a level.
There are numerous dishes one can order. My favourites for level 2 session will be Veg green garlic (a flavourful blend of greens -paste & garlic as a base and the usual vegetables sauteed in this & garnished with grated cabbage) which is a 'melt in the mouth' affair when served hot & a greasy feeling at room temperature. The dish remains my personal favourite at Ujwal. You also have other popular dishes like the mushroom pepper fry (aroma of freshly ground pepper), Egg Pakoda,Egg Burgi.
I can probably write a short story but then this is a review!! I realise. The level 3 - This is a critical juncture where all your friends are well settled having attained a zenith after all those drinks and starters. Time for some non- veg. Tender coconut kabab(served in coconut shell)- an exclusive famous dish, Chilly - Milly Kabab( hot & sweet) ,Kundapura kane(lady fish, if I am correct) Masala, crab/prawn ghee roast are our some of the favourites & specialities.
Most of us reluctantly agree to eat our dinner here (there is food at home always, if you are a family man) as our selfish senses are not done yet. Matka chicken biryani( dum biryani served in mud pot) is an experience to crave for. You will also find neer dosa, moode(cup cooked, idly type) which goes well with mushroom/tomato curry.
To sum it up, heavenly food, sometimes an eye sore bill, decent ambience , bad service at times(the waiters seem to have an ego sometimes for some reason) & long wait(for your order) during peak times. To conclude, we can't resist & will continue our weekend tourney at Ujwal.
They have branches on Millers road & RT nagar too!
Excellent Manglorean cuisine for this side of town. The Manglorean fish fries , the daily special of Neer Dosa, Moodey ( Manglorean form of Idly) with the Kori Gassy (Manglorean Chicken Curry) are excellent . One of my favorites is the Tender Coconut Chicken , This spicy chicken preparation with lost of green chilled , capsicum packed inside a tender coconut is really worth trying out once. The Mutton Pepper Dry is also good. There are different sections for family & the rest of the crowd at the restaurant . Renukesh is the man in charge of delivery , if taken care will provide you with excellent delivery service.
Average for for 2 (2 course meal) Rs 300 to 500/-
