We went to this simple place for breakfast while visiting Chennai. You get amazing Idlis - super soft and with a huge spread of chutneys. They serve food on banana leaf - loved the authentic experience.
Loved the ghee podi idli, never realised idli could be so delicious. Vada also was fresh hot and crispy. But the Idlis stole the show.
Murugan idly shop is one the famous breakfast for idly n dosa in the Chennai city.. the prices are higher equivalent to 4 star hotel prices, the quality is good comparing to prices it’s not worth. But one time can visit for the tasty food like gun powder idly/ sweet Pongal/ butter gun powder uttapam/ masala dosa...

Always pleasing to have the soft idli , crispy vadas with delicious sambhar accompanied by varieties of chutneys. Not to forget Jigarthanda the synonym to my name (Jigar is cool) or the sweet bitter filter coffee. Have tried most of all items dosa, variety rice, sweet pongal and this is the first place that I land up whenever i come to chennai.
Murugan Idli Shop, located at the Edward Elliots beach (Bessie Beach) dishes out some of the softest and fluffiest idlis down south. Buzzing with locals, if you ever happen to be in Chennai and wish to experience the real pulse of the city, then do give Murugan Idli Shop a visit.
.
The moment you enter this quaint little eatery, the piquant aroma of idlis smothered with melted ghee and spicy gunpowder (podi chutney) will tingle your taste buds in no time.
.
This place is as authentic as it can get. The waiters (fondly called as Anna) will make you comfortably seated and then put banana leaves in front of you on which the idli's would be served. What makes this place stand out from the others is the quality of their idlis. They are the softest you will ever have! End you meal with a chilled glass of their signature drink- Jigarthanda (an interesting concoction of milk, ice cream and sabudana)
.
At: Murugan Idli Shop, Chennai
Awesome place to have south indian food in Chennai, the taste, authenticity etc bang on, visited by every vegetarians south indian delicacies. A must visit
We visited this place two days back and believe it or not it is one off the best outlets in Chennai to be honest, when i think off Murugan idly i was quiet relectuant, but when we decided to go to g.n.cheety road at t.nagar then i said let's go and it was just great overall,we tried the malgapodi idly it was just awesome it was hot, fluffy and soft, the masala vada was also great and crispy with masala stuffed in the vada, the medhu vada was fresh and hot but it was little soft and could have been crispy more but it was decent and could be improved more, the onion uthapaam was great and crispy with nice onions was stuffed on top which was nice and ghee dosai was also great and could have been little more crispy but it was nice and at last tried the filter coffee and sweet chakra pongal which was great it was made from jaggery instead of refined processed white sugar which was great option and the service was prompt and there is AC in this particular outlet which was again great, overall all in all price is also reasonable and food is just great and fantastic.
First time here, tried vada, plain and podi idly, with podi oil. The food is good, consistent l, the ambience could be better, the service is good. Got some milk peda as well, it was good.
If you are looking for some breakfast then this is your go-to place. They serve a variety of south Indian breakfast options such as dosa and idlis. Do visit here soon.

One cannot possibly miss this place when in Chennai. The best kind of idli, sambar, chutney and everything else on the menu. Yet to try more items from their list though.
I am south Indian food lover, I had visited murugan idli shop where I had best dosa and idli. I can't express my love for this but idli was so soft and yummy. Just put it in your mouth and swallow it. Even I had tried Rava Dosa which served with 4 chutneys and shambhar. All chutneys are too delicious and still mouth watering. Even staff is amazing, they served food in 5 min so no waiting at all. A person who visit Chennai has to come here.
Highly recommended form my side

Idlies are good with chutney and sambar . Sweet Pongal is tasty. Very less quantity and prices are high . Overall very good restraunt for South Indian dishes
Soft idlis With a variety of chutneys ,podis and sambar! Crowded at all times!! But Quick service.
The highlight of this restaurant are their idlis!
Dosas are average. Not great.
Murugan idly shop never disappointed me so far. I had paneer dosai, fried rice, rava onion dosai and Jigruthanda.
Fried rice was outstanding and both the dosai varieties were good. Special mention to their sambar and chutneys, they were simply good asusual.
Of course, I would never leave the place without having Jigruthanda. One main reason to visit this shop.
Vfm:4/5
So tasty and soft ghee podi idly and variety of chutney they serve.dosa was very crisp as it suppose to be.of course one time try at least if u come to chennai.
Murugan Idli has grown as a brand of its own specializing in authentic Tamil breakfast items - even though they are available throughout the day.
The softest idlis and wide range of chutney is mouth watering.
The rava dosa made with jeera and pepper given a unique taste. The crispiest vada with sambar should not be missed.
Overall every person visiting Chennai must compulsorily visit this place.
Wow ....what a place to have South Indian dishes. We started with idli, Wada, dosa, Uttapa and all served with 3 types of Chatni and sambhar. It was yummy and we ended with Pongal desert and filter coffee . All this at 1200 for 6 of us
Reception and all service staff were very helpful and cordial. Our server, though hasselled and always in a hurry, was very friendly and took good care of us. Food definitely makes up for the long waits especially during lunch time.
Loved this place , the from the banana leaf drill to eating with your hands , be rest assured that you will not leave a morsel on your leaf ... this place guarantees that you will keep licking your fingers , just let the guy serving you what ever he gets .....
There are umpteen branches of Murugan idly, but I guess this is the best and original branch. Visit this place not for ambience, quiet, or service, but only for the South Indian tiffin. It's just superb. Since the tiffin is served in a banana leaf the hygiene part is taken care of. Medu wada, ghee dosa, ghee rawa onion dosa, idly, everything is worth a try with unlimited sambar and excellent chutneys. Don't miss their sweet Pongal. It's one of the finest. Gulp it all with a glass of hot strong filter kaappi.
Normally I write many things about a place to describe abt my experience at a place... But I won't write much abt this place simply because there is nothing more that I can say to describe this place... The ghee podi idly is simply outstanding... The idly simply melts in your mouth as soon as you take it... The chutneys are again perfect... They complement the main dishes nicely...
Service is top notch and also the ambience is nice... Would love to recommend this place to everyone who visits Chennai...
This place never goes out of style even when there are lotta places for South Indian dining! Love their different varieties of chutneys and they never miss on the quality at any point of time! My favourite dishes are podi idli, ghee dosa, sakkara Pongal and cheese kuzhi paniyaram! A pocket friendly and a decent place!!
Good quality of food served. Though the rate for quantity ratio is ok only though. But on the expensive side. Worth the experience. Can recommend this for takeouts only though. Seating arrangements needs to improve.
One of the best place to have authentic south indian food.
As every one knows the quality of the food here is too good and the tastes very authentic.
They also serve the food at good speed so that you wont feel the crowd there.
A must try place which is worth your money.
My picks : Podi Idly, Masala Dosa and Filter coffee.
Searching for The best, authentic South Indian tiffin ? You've got it right here at Murugan Idli shop! From the soups to the podi dosai, everything is amazing with the sambhar! Yummy 100% 👌🏻❤️
I went so many times along with my friends. Just wanna eat podi idly.very tasty and hygiene food. Every one should try. Very near to my hostel. Regularly I visited here.
Finally got a chance to have idli at the most famous idli franchise in chennai. And Boy! Now i know why its sooo popular. The softest idlis i have ever eaten. What makes it a complete experience is the various chutneys they give with it. Each one tastes so magical. Coudnt stop myself from stuffing my stomach. The service also was quite good considering that this place does not have even one table free, and you could see 8-10 people waiting outside for a table.Had ordered palin idli, podi idli, uttapam, and masala dosa..at the end of a true south indian meal,i can say i left with a very happy tummy!!
Been there for a evening snack and the restaurant is always busy. Food iis really good. Try out their variety dosa. Will definitely visit this place again.
Best place for authentic south indian..must try idli, vada and ghee dosai..one must visit if you are found of south indian food..they serve everythng on banana plate and enjoy all food witg your hands..😀
The food was lovely .... ghee dosa was yum....jigarthanda was Awsome ..the idlis were soft .... sweet Pongal was rich n nice.. food was jus perfect .. too yum.. I suggest everyone to pay a visit here
This is the very outlet where my love for Murugan Idli Shop began around 10 years ago.
I have eaten at several 'Bhavans' and other veg restaurants in Chennai...somewhere I feel that all of them have 'modernised' and 'customised' (right from their serving leaves being cut to plate shapes to their venturing into Chinese, Punjabi and even Italian) over the years for whatsoever reasons...the South Indian essence has gone missing.
Murugan Idli gives that real South Indian / Chennai / Madras / Madrasi feel...it's all about how South Indian food is served and supposed to be eaten.
The must haves for me here are idli with oil-podi and ghee roast.
Am not so much of a chutney freak...usually only go with the white (coconut) chutney. But have seen people relishing the other chutney varieties.
And no one makes Jigarthanda as tasty as theirs (Murugan Idli Shop)...it's the idealmost dessert.
If making varieties of idli and other south indian dishes is an art, Murugan idli shop is its Picasso. Most Recommended. The best i have ever had :)
Good and Quick Service..
I Like the food here because one key reason is that it tastes like home food...
Most Recommended and Must Try is their Podi Idly and Sweet Pongal..
All other items are Also Good..
The Dosas and their chutneys are good matcho...
We were in chennai for some other temple visiting and i have never heard of this place since I am from Delhi, our Driver told us about it we went to the T.Nagar’s one and there was waiting line so I was like waiting in a south Indian restaurant in South India this is gonna be unique.
When we entered and order our Dosai.
The taste, the fragrance and the hospitality was one of the best.
10/10 on cleanliness.
Must go place when you are in Chennai.
Highly recommended when in Chennai, this place has the best idlis and sambar... The variety of chutneys served along with the idli is mind boggling...They are lip smacking and totally compliment the fare... Went there for dinner, right from being served on Banana Leaves to the filter coffee, it all just stood out... Tried the podi idli gun powder and the podi uttapam with gun powder and ghee...Three words: TOTAL MUST HAVE...
On my 1st ever visit to chennai, almost everybody recommended me to try this place.
Being a die hard idli fan had to follow.
Called for ghee dipped ildli with podi, it was sheer heaven with the first bite. Coming from mumbai where u get sugar based sambar, it was a wonderful change to try authentic southindian sambar. Loved almost all the chutneys that came along with it.
Apart from the idlis, uttampam with podi n small onion were very tasty too. So was the pongal.
N do not forget to try their speciality of jigar thanda.
Amazingly soft & finger licking delicious idlis.....
Best idlis so far I have had..... The ghee dosa is also must try! Now I know why locals recommend this place so much....
A couple of us visited this place last week on recommendation from a local. We were apprehensive as we couldn’t converse in Tamil but didn’t want to lose the opportunity of trying some local food.
The place was crowded with families but we were quickly given a table. I was delighted that the server understood my broken Tamil and gladly helped! We tried the podi idly, onion uttapam, jigarthanda and filter coffee. Every single item was top class! Particularly the podi idly! The smell of ghee and 5-6 chutneys were all awesome!
Absolute 5 stars for this place!
I hope they open a store in bangalore as well!!
Ordered sweet Pongal.... Mouth watering 🤤 best taste at best price!!👌
Best in overall CHENNAI!!
As usual quick service by Zomato..
5 stars for the delivery and taste👍👌
In love with this place because their Filter Coffee tastes amazing. And every tiffin item actually tastes pretty good. Special mention to their sambar idli!! Only Con is that the service could be a bit better.
This place is hands down best place to stop by for a quick grab. Amazing podi and the idly is simply delicious. Well the service could have been a better.
Visiting a legend in any city is always a great food experience - “Murugan Idli House” in Chennai is one of them .
Multiple rounds of hot vada, fresh steam idli, podi idli ,ghee dosas , with four types of chutney , milk peda and hot filter coffee to top it up has got to be one of the best brunches in the world!
My favourite place in chennai. I visit this place each nd everytime when i visit chennai. The podi idli is my favourite. Also the ghee pongal was a big hit here. But what i like the most is the authenticity of this place. Jigar thanda always have a special place in my tummy whenever i visit here.
A big thumbs up to this place.
Taste 5/5
Service 5/5
Overall 5/5
This was the best meal in 2 days of crazy work travel
Simple pocket friendly and high on taste
Pl do give this one a try multiple joints are there in the city almost at every nook n corner
As usual - Murugan Idli tops !! Vadai was little hard this time .. but tasty food !!
Visited this famous place during my Chennai visit. All praise is worth and it's must visit place. It's food which makes a eating place special .
Simple clean cosy place with prompt service. Food is served on fresh banana leaves. Tried idli, podi idli, onion uttapam, medu bada and masala dosa. All items were served with 4 types of chutneys and sambhar. Coconut , tomoto, mint and imli chutney.
Authentic food taste. Don't miss filter coffee after meals and do also try. jingamitha.
Whenever I go to this place, I am sure it will be packed with people and it certainly turns out this way. It is one of the very few restaurants which serves the right blend of high quality delicious authentic food combined with a very reasonably priced menu. I am always satisfied after dining out at this place. Even if the restaurant is crowded, service is prompt and swift. The waiters will attend to you reasonably quickly and there are waiters who come around offering you other items of food like Panniyaram when your waiting for your food or inbetween eating so you never feel like your waiting too long.
The price is always very reasonable and the food quality has always been excellent whenever I have visited. Murugan Idli Shop is a restaurant where you can confidently take your family for a authentic South Indian meal!
It serves quality food, though after settling here in Chennai four years back my taste has changed.
But I still don't mind having the pure South Indian delicacies here.
If you are new to South Indian food, hop in and experiment here without any worries. 🍽
I was quite unwell suffering from fever and my friend had placed an order for dinner as i wasn't in position to go out. I'm flattered by the service. Keep up.
Ambience - okaish
Staff - quick and good service
Food: served with four Chutnies
Plain idli - hot, soft and delicious
Ghee podi idli - pretty delicious
Ghee onion Uttapam - delicious
Sweet Pongal - Not very impressed (one 🌟 less for this)
Would I visit again? - Definitely Yes!!!
Exclusive original traditional south Indian taste..the Halwa is amazing and sonare the idlis so soft..all the "podis"- chutney and powders are absolute awesome..do visit once
Small place but packed with some good food, Murugan Idli are known for their Ghee Podi Idlis and Podi Dosas. And that’s what we tried here as well, we visited here during lunch time although they had mini meals, but we decided to go for what they are best at.
We tried their Ghee Podi Dosa and Ghee Podi Idli, super soft idlis nicely coated with ghee and Pudi which takes it to next level. They serve some 3-4 varieties of chutney, 1 coconut chutney, 1 tomato, 1 onion, 1 coriander and Sambar. Dosa (Dosai) was also superb, size is big, crispy and nicely coated with ghee and podi.
Service is quick, staff are very humble, although we didn’t know Tamil, they were kind enough to keep patience and understand what we were asking for.
Superb food. Great quality. Wonderful variety. Hospitable staff. Amazing place to try authentic south indian in Chennai.
Their podi idli, sambar was good where as ghee masala thosai was average. Thick sambar gravy. Service was quick and coffee was ordinary. Sweet ponggal was kinda too sweet but the ghee made it taste good.
Very good place for IDLI. My wife will eat IDLI only here,no other place. Podi is famous and I usually buy dosa podi here. On weekends we need to wait for some time to Dine-IN.
Recently we visited Chennai. We went to Murugan Idli Shop. Very clean and well managed. We ate the best Podi Idli in the town. It’s really a Mouth watering. The staff are polite and helpful.
Super tiffin, sweet pongal is top notch. Especially muhurtham days T. NAGAR is full and nearby hotels have people waiting in queue. So we busted murugan idling in the lunch time. Good food.
Good taste of idli & dosa. Chinna vengaya ootappam is the signature dish here. Various types of chutney are served for everyone
Idlis are very soft and that makes it very unique as the preparations are different
Podi idly is their star branding and is very tasty.
Crispy Ghee onion Rava Dosa is very unique and is highly recommended
In summers they have a very famous cool drink called Jihar Thanda which is the combination of ice cream and cool drink
One of the most traditional South Indian Food Restaurant I have visited.
You get everything served on Banana leaf and I just loved that.
Initially you will be given with 4 types of chutney, Nariyal, pudhina, lasan and tomato.
Then, I have ordered dosa and idly, which is priced per piece so, you can order accordingly.
There is one person who is servicing some other specialities by coming to your table, you can opt for dishes if you want.
I really liked the Appam (Salty), I don't remember South Indian name of that but, generally we call them appe.
Only disappointment was Vada. Sambar was quite optional with food, if you request, they will serve. That was also okay type.
But Murugan's idli were delite to have.
We even tried Jigarthanda, which is said to be Chennai Delicacy. I found it just ok to be honest as ice cream in it was having extra sugar.
You can see the items on my table, that costed me around 440 something. So, you can imagine how pocket friendly it was.
The taste of the food was amazing, if you visit I recommend you to try their ghee podi idly it was mouth-watering 😋😋. And the jigarthanda they sell is so nice...... The place was good and the service is also nice.(The sweet pongal is also good)
Food was good not extraordinary. Podi idli was good. The mini tiffin had curd rice, sambar sadam, puliyogare which tasted decent even though quantity was little less. The jigarthanda was good but little too sweet. Samosa and kolukattai was ok too. Prices was also reasonable.
Murugan idli kadai is a popular restaurant that specializes in idli, ghee podi idli is their signature dish. The menu is limited, but the food is tasty and the prices are reasonable. The place is small, so it may not be suitable for large groups. During peak hours, customers may have to wait outside as the seating capacity is limited. Car parking space available for those who drive.
Food was excellent! Loved every bite. Was a bit crowded on a Saturday night. Orders were delivered to the table in a few minutes. Restrooms were just horrible. Worst restrooms I have ever seen! Extremely insanitary. No water. Unhygienic toilets . Overall 6/10 from me.
A good veg restaurant near T Nagar area. Had mini meals, onion oothappam, medhu vadai, ghee roast and their signature ghee podi idli. All of the items were good. Their main highlight was the quick service. Food was served within 5 minutes. Polite staffs. Price was obviously on the higher side
The best things that they offer, is the 5 kind of chutneys along with assorted dishes. Lovely food and I loved the system where they come up with items and you can just select from them. The queue usually is pretty high so pls keep time handy.
Always the best....be chutneys, podi, singature onion uthapam 👍👍👍 delicious
Thambi Durai served our table with joy and made us enjoy our dinner.
