I had the ghee paper roast and the size was bigger than I expected (the biggest I've seen so far). It was delicious but would have been so much more better if they had served it hot and fresh. Idli sambar didnt fail to impress me too, was tasty as always!!!
The idli wasnt soft as rayar cafe but decent.
The sambhar is coconut grated and also small onions added. The coffee is amazing as well the milk is thick and decoction is of good quality. The sambhar goes to all other locations from here. Its very close to Parthasarathi temple hardly a km. I havent tried other dishes like dosa etc.

❤️ The sambar that we get here is heavenly 😍 seems like the cost is only for the sambar and not for the main items 🤔😂 Idlis were soft. And the bondas were crispy 😋 filter coffee was not too strong. Ambience is quite good. Jamuns are prepared using a handful of ghee 😋 Loved it ✌️
Was suggested this place by locals in Chennai for their famous sambar and idli. And they have been in existence from a long time.
And yes, their idli sambar is awesome and has a flavour that is unmatched elsewhere. Simply authentic and what they have done is maintained the original taste and flavour since their inception couple of decades ago. Also had their limited meal or thali. Very very nice!!

We went here for breakfast on a Sunday. The place does stand up to its name. I thought I would not like the sambar which is not sweetish but their sambar does taste really good.
I tried the mini idli, vada-sambar and the onion uttapam all of which tasted amazing. To finish of I took the coffee which tasted so good. Overall I totally recommend this place for a great breakfast!

One of my favourite restaurants in chennai.. The sambar is as magical as they claim it is. Do not expect a different taste when you are visiting for the first time. It is authentic in its taste and reasonably priced.

Triplicane Ratna Café is widely known for its Idly-Sambhar. To enjoy the authenticity of Ratna Café's Idly-Sambhar and to tick one off from my bucket list, I visited the ever crowded outlet in Triplicane for breakfast on a hot Sunday. Luckily we had a table available in the AC hall and we got our selves seated. My friends and I ordered 2 Idly-Sambhars with Medhu Vada and one Plain Dosa along with 3 strong coffees(because breakfast is not complete without ending it with a strong filter coffee).
The idlies was served within minutes and Dosa within 5 mins. Idlys were brought in with coconut chutney and a pan full of sambhar. The sambhar was served over the idlys until the idlys were submerged in it. I was excited because I had been waiting to savour the ever famous Ratna Café's sambhar the first time.
The sambhar was truly authentic. I could literally drink the entire sambhar if served seperately. It was that good. Idlies were good. They were quite larger than the usual idlies that you get in other Veg Restaurant Giants in Chennai. The plain dosa was good too. It was half roasted not completely white just as I would like. Medhu Vada was the only one that was not upto the standards of the highly reputed restaurant. It was not hot, was not soft enough. It was difficult to cut it to small pieces with the spoon since it was hard on the outside. It was probably because the vadas was made earlier on the day and it was served later to us. By the time I finished my first idly and completed half of second idly the server served us with onion chutney a.k.a kaara chutney. We weren't sure why it was served for Idly-Sambhar as well but it tasted good. It would have been better if they served it earlier along with the idly and dosa. We were done with the food and coffee was served to us.
I always prefer a strong filter coffee so I made sure the waiter knows I want my coffee strong. When it arrived it didn't look as good as the hot chips filter coffee but when I tasted it, it surely didn't disappoint. The coffee was good and strong, sugar perfect. I was completely satisfied with the filter coffee.

Place was tucked away behind Marina beach drive. Looks small from outside but boasts spacious seating in AC and non-AC areas. We went to AC area. They are known for their sambar and it was outstanding. We ordered dishes that had generous portions of that sambar. Sambar refills are allowed by the courteous staff. They have to look at keeping the place neat and pest-free. One house fly landed straight into my sambar bowl. Had to throw that sambar away.

To pick the best IDLY in the land of idlis, Chennai is a tough task. But head straight to Ratna Cafe, triplicane, and you can taste the best idly in the world. Situated in the very busy and congested triplicane high road, this iconic joint has been serving idlis for the past 70 years. The waiter was telling me that they serve around 15000 idlies daily from morning till night 11 pm. I am not a idly person really, but I just freaked out on their spongy idlis with the perfect sambar poured all over the idlis. Just out of the world. The ambience, just like any other small joints, crowded, busy. Service is good. But the best idly. Other stuff like menu wada and ghee roast strictly ok. Filter coffee good like in most Chennai joints. But the idlis are to die for. Never ever miss this place if you are a idly lover.

Ratna Cafe.. This is a legend... I remember my childhood days... I actually am from Hyderabad.. A Tamilian basically.. Most of my summer holidays are spent in Chennai.. I love Chennai.. So every time I come my uncle or brother mostly used to take me to this Hotel... As soon as we sit on the table a plate of piping hot idlies with sambar poured on the top of it loaded with a table spoon of ghee... Imagine the morning breakfast of such kind... OMG.. No words to express every bite of it adds the flavour to it.. You can have unlimited sambar.. you just can sip on only sambar... Oh My God Started Craving for that now.. Yummmmmmyyy... Never miss it..

We have been here on Sunday morning for breakfast around 7.30AM. we have ordered the famous Sambar idly, Ghee pongal , Medhu vada,coffee and SPL jelebi.
Sambar is so tasty and one of the best sambars in town. Pongal and vada were tasted good along with coffee. Had hot crispy jelebi in the last that completed our breakfast.
Service is good and price is little bit high.
Don't miss this place when you are in Chennai.

Indeed Sambar here is very very good.
The one thing that I noticed is their poster about using double refined Oil and Ghee. They boast of good ingredients (70% organic).
Then we ordered Jilabi which was fried in Hot ghee it was just awesome.

This place is very good and highly recommended for thier great food and service. Only hiccup being little bit high on money which can be ignored as they serve good and well made food.

This has been my go to place for a very long time. I go here almost every time I visit Parthasarathy temple in Triplicane. It is more than a mess but less than a hotel imo which serves comfort food at a price that is not very steep. I might choose to have some fancy food from time to time. But, at the end of the day, it is typical South Indian rice based food that I crave for.
It is crowded most of the time. And they serve piping hot sambar in large pans which is a trademark of this place. Idly and sambar is famous here. Idli here, in my opinion, is different from the usual idly. It has the consistency/texture of rava (semolina), if it makes any sense. When you take a piece, and dip it in sambar it almost melts.
A good place overall that provides comfort food. Would be happy to recommend this place to anyone who likes idli sambar. But, everyone’s taste is different. So, this is purely my opinion. 🙂
The best sambhar idly of my life! Idly was good but the taste of sambhar was ultimate! It was so unique and amazingly tasty that I ordered another plate for myself. That was just heaven. After that I had filter coffee which was equally amazing and energetic. The froth over the coffee was so tasty. This place is the oldest serving idly sambhar in the city (1943). When you go to Chennai, don't forget to visit here.

I've been here thousands of times just to have idly sambar. They are too good at it, the most delicious sambar in chennai i can say. Just order a plate of idli the waiter will bring you a 2 idlis and 1 big mug of sambar and pour it all on top of the idlis.
The other dishes here are just average nothing tastes as good as hot idly and hot sambar here. Parota kurma, dosa, poori, vada f.coffee all are just average Wont recommend any other dish here.
Lunch meals are pretty decent no complaints taste and quantity good, but i love spicy so will prefer national lodge.

Lovely place and really enjoyed the food here. One of the oldest restaurants and maintaining the standard pretty well. The traditional south Indian sambar is too good and my most favourite. Hope they could maintain the same level at other outlets as well.

I go there for Idli's. It's really distinct from idli what you get at any other place. The texture is totally different and taste too. One of its kind sambhar. Really good. What you get actually is, they pour full jug of sambhar on idli and by the time you finish one idli you will be requiring another pouring of sambhar. Idli totally soak sambhar. Taste is just wow. A must try while in Chennai.
I went there yesterday morning with my extended family (around 20). We enjoyed the Idly Sambar Vada Pongal Poori Dosa and Jilabi. Last but not the least their traditional sambar can be never be beaten by any dishes. Bit expensive but must try.
There is a coffee factory next to it so you can reach here just by sniffing 😄😄.
Having read and watching videos about this hotel long back it had entered my "must try" place in Chennai so when I got chance to be in Chennai I just follow Google maps to reach my places .
This cafe has a unique taste to sambar due to use of small sambar onion and Fenugreek seeds ( methi) in perfect proportion.
Must try if you're in Mylapore.
I did try podi idli ( chutney powder ) also . I would say just stick to sambar idli only .
Carry water bottle or buy one .. coz I found water is not upto quality . Perhaps see before you drink.

Just the word "sambar" always reminds me of this place as they serve one of the best sambar in town, i have been to this place since my childhood and always relished it. The uniqueness of the sambar is the jaggery present in it which adds a mild sweet flavour to the sambar .
Ahhhh Ratna cafe,, is still the best no doubts,,, the triplicane famous Ratna cafe maintains the standards of its taste,, this place has got very simple ambience, good service,, gets crowded on the weekends, on the other days u can get a table ...the dishes are all mind-blowing and mouth watering, starting from dosa, Sambar idly to there north Indian thali,, all are must try and just delicious and authentic,,, on a whole must try ...they have got a good car parking space at all,, so no need to worry about that,, just come and enjoy.. Ratna Cafe truly is one of the legendary outlets in whole of Chennai famous for their Idly Sambhar and Filter Coffee which was recommended to me by a lot of my friends from the region. Its only natural that I try this place out on my first visit to Chennai so I headed straight to the Triplicane branch the moment I landed at Chennai Central station. On the appearance, the place has a quaint setting which is bustling with people as early as 7 in the morning. And judging by the people lining up and no tables empty inside the cafe, I knew I was in for a treat.
For my order I went in for a plate of their Idli Sambhar, Medu Vada and Rawa Masala Dosa. What I found special about the place was not the softness of the Idly or the crispiness of the Medu Vada but their mindblowing Sambhar. Made from scratch every morning with home ground spices and coconut, they have absolutely mastered this art which is evident from an ever consistent quality of piping hot Sambhar. Both the Idli and Vada seemed to me as side dishes to this delight. The Rawa Masala Dosa on the other hand was quite average stuffed up with a below average potato mixture. To end things at a good note though, I went in for Chennai's favorite beverage, Filter Coffee which just like their Sambhar turned out to be a great one.
The service too does justice to their illustrious fame having extremely quick and agile service staff. While being kind and polite, the staff is quite helpful and strives to deliver each and every customer the best. The kitchen too works like an engine, pushing out food at a staggering pace. Overall, it was a really pleasant experience and I personally would love to visit them on my next visit.

One of the best restaurant for pure veg food. The idly immersed in sambar is always an attraction. The quality of the food has been the same since the time I remember eating here as a kid. A small disappointment is the parking. The service, quality, and quantity great!

If ever there is a superlative place for traditional breakfast in Chennai, this is it. Breakfast here left me in such a high, it took days to recover from it!
I woke up at 5am with the anticipation of a good breakfast. The wait from then to 7:15am, when I reached Ratna Cafe, were the most torturous minutes ever! I started off with their famous Sambar Idli, which was simply out of this world!! With the idlis being drowned in tasty sambar in their signature style, i decided to have the Vada separately, as opposed to eating them together (like in Bangalore). I wanted to eat more idlis, but also wanted to try different dishes. I’ve heard people raving about the Pongal here. I don’t usually eat Pongal, but Ratna Cafe’s version was fantastic! Then came poori, soft and fluffy, tasting very good with the potato sagu. This was the heaviest breakfast I’ve had, and with these dishes, I reached my limit. But how can you walk away from a traditional South Indian breakfast without some strong filter coffee? Which was excellent, just like the rest.
The ambiance is basic and old fashioned. This adds to the charm of the food. Prices are very friendly, and the service is fast. Chennai is a city that serves up superb South Indian vegetarian food. To top the places with this cuisine in this city is quite a feat, which Ratna Cafe has achieved.

Visited this place during my short trip to Chennai and it was worth it. Dosa, Idly, Coffee, Rose Milk, Badam Milk were all terrific. Service is quick and price is reasonable. Truly a legendary place and definitely worth a visit.

This place is located in a congested place so those who come by car should visit here after 10pm (Need to park the car on the roads). Space available for two wheeler parking.
It was really a good time in ratna cafe when I have a idli sambar with my friends really it was good time with breakfast and sambar was fabulous. I have heard but now I feel the southern taste very nice.
Ratna Cafe is located at Triplicane High road. This place was on my bucket list for a long time. We ordered sambar idly, ghee pongal and filter coffee. Ghee pongal was mind blowing and the best one I had till date. Sambar idly was like somewhere between pretty good and great. Filter coffee was just amazing and that is the best way to end your meal. Ambience was okayish but service was excellent. So don't miss this place if you are around Triplicane area.

Early morning on a pleasant day i drive to marina beach and ratna cafe. Swiggy boys are in rush at this restraunt. We ordered uthappam, idli vada,masala dosa and two mini coffee for just 281. Quantity is above average but taste is so good. King of this place is the Sambar, which prepared with grouded masala and coconut.....This place is better than most south indian food chain in chennai.....will defenetly visit back.( If both good weather on morning and I wake up early to drive from pallavaram happens😉)....

We went here for breakfast after visiting the Parthasarathi temple. On entering the hotel you can see this place is local's favourite. One can see all classes of people enjoying their food here. We ordered Onion rava dosai, Masala dosai and Sambar vadai. Both dosai varieties tasted good especially with their Sambar. I would have preferred chopped onions on top of Sambar Vasai which was missing otherwise everything was good.

Sambar was authentic, which I've never tasted before in my life. Can't believe they're giving only 2 idlis for such cost. Anyway, for the taste of Sambar, it's worth it. Filter Coffee was awesome. One of the very old and famous vegetarian hotel located in triplicane. It's very famous for their sambar. The old style ambience and food taste was above average. You can drink Litres and litres of sambar for single idly.
Ratna Cafe is a popular vegetarian restaurant located in the Mylapore area of Chennai. I found the ghee roast to be amazing. The porotta veg curry combo and filter coffe with less sugar enriched my taste buds . The Cafe is located in a busy street so plan your visit advance and better use public transport or taxi service .
The price seems to be not low nor high compared to other restaurants around .
Overall, Ratna Cafe seems to be a great place to try out some delicious vegetarian food in Chennai.

The Sambhar Idly at this establishment is truly exceptional. While many draw comparisons with the Welcome Hotel, asserting its superiority, I personally find Ratna Cafe to be significantly more satisfying. Despite the slightly higher cost, the quality and taste at Ratna Cafe make it well worth the price. It holds the title of my favourite cafe in Chennai, conveniently located close to my residence. I do wish I had the opportunity to sample more of their delightful dishes. The meal I tried was also quite pleasing.

The Sambar was overated but it stands for that word. The taste was very good. Must try veg tiffin spot. Bucket list done ✅
My take, much of a hype in YouTube. Though good, there wasn't a wow moment. Located at busy junction. No parking area either for 4 wheelers. It has old looks inside, some may love it. Food and service was pretty decent. Overall Fine.

I stayed in Chennai for 3 days, out of which I visited 2 diff branches of Ratna Cafe on 2 days and none of them failed to impress me.
Stating from the taste of sambar, quality of food, ambience - everything is great. This joint has the best best SAMBAR Chennai can offer you. Must Visit ! Parking is a lil bit problem near both their branches I visited. I tried their snacks also which are very good.

Its famous for sambar and idly. The Samar is the trade dish here. Tiffin is good and poratta and dosai have different taste. Try atleast once for good taste. Takeaway is there

One special thing about this place is for one single idly you ask for one bucket sambar. They keep on refilling your plate with sambar. And coffee was authentic You feel like you had light food don’t worry they give you one heavy bill
A very old iconic cafe . Most well known for its Sambhar Idli ( basically Idli served with loads and loads of Sambhar on top of it . As you eat the server comes and keeps on topping it with Sambhar. Also has good Kara Bath ( Upma) . Not to forget the mesmerising Coffee.

Most authentic idlis! Simple and yummy food. No complications! Love their dishes and it’s a must visit place when in Chennai. Ambience can be a bit improved - but again something’s are left best as is.
