I love them .. this is heritage food place .. when my wife took our kids for an evening snack .. they loved it as well .. idlis were fluffy and Puris were fried to perfection .. thank you so much for a lovely 30 mins at your place

I have been here so many times. This place is warm and cosy and has remained same and unchanged from past 15-20 years. Yes it's a old restaurant and i have been coming here from the time i was toddler.

The best dishes here are
1. Idli
2. Mysore masala dosa
3. South Indian meals
4. Chana bhatura
5. Basundi.

Don't try any other stuff here as they are just average.
These are the best and must have items.

Food is not spicy at all and is palatable for most of the people. Someone looking for spicy stay away as food is not all spicy and is on a sweeter side.

Overall ratings:-
1. Taste: 4/5
2. Ambience: 4/5
3. Quantity: 4/5
4. Hygiene: 3/5
5. Price: 4/5

Overall a good place, but certainly need to improve hygiene as the toilets are dirty and smelly and waiters many times dip their hands in the glasses and serve them us to drink otherwise a nice experience every time i go..

Has the charm of old Madras. Food is fantastic here. Their pongal and sambar vadai are the best in town. One star less for their so so lunch. Yet, my favourite vegetarian restaurant in Chennai. Nothing comes close to this.

Ratings based only on Taste..
Krishna Restaurant located in mylapore is a part of the woodlands hotel in Cathedral Road is quite a legendary place in chennai..Operational for decades it has a separate following in itself and i am one of them..Been my favorite since my childhood...

Restaurants looks mirror any restaurants from the 90's but have with good maintenance it looks quite good..The cooling from the A/C is perfect..But the environment as such is busy and chaotic thanks to the busy servers..

On my recent visit ordered their famous Masala Dosai priced at 110 including taxes..The Dosa is quite crispy served with an yummy potato masala..The Chutney and sambar served along were too good and overall it worked very well..
one of the best in chennai for sure..Also had a takeaway of meals recently which was quite good actually with everything being fresh and taste really good..

Must try restaurant for sure..

One of my favorite breakfast place in Chennai, use to stay just behind this restaurant for 4 years and whenever I have craving for good idly sambar this was the place. The prices are a bit steep but considering the location and quality it's worth it. Quick service and good food.

A vegetarian restaurant in the new woodlands hotel worth trying.
Came here for an evening coffee after shopping with my Amma and twin sister.
What I ordered :
1) Bhajji
2) Filter coffee
Three types of Bhajji were served - Potato, Onion and Raw banana (one each) with chutney and sambar as an accompaniment. They were really good. It was freshly made and hence hot when it was brought to us. Usually when I have Bhajji in any of the restaurants, I would notice excess oil on the plate and as I take a bite, the oil would land on my fingers......making the whole experience uncomfortable. In this restaurant, the oil was drained really well with none of it on the plate and my fingers. To add.......the bhajji batter tasted amazing!!
The filter coffee was nice. Since I’m a fan of strong coffee, I enjoyed drinking it. For those who do not enjoy strong coffee this is not the right choice. But at the end I felt a bitter taste after drinking it which made the experience a little uncomfortable.
A good place to enjoy a late evening tiffin and beverages.

This place exudes an old world charm. For the ambience, I found the place a tad costly. An unknown brand of bottled water is about 50 bucks. However the fact that it is crowded all the time speaks of the quality. All the dosa options here are very good. The South Indian lunch spread was so good. Absolutely love the vatta kuzhambu here. The lunch is rounded off with a sweet, ice cream and beeda. Would vote for this place any day for its taste, hygiene and slice of yesteryear Chennai.

Go for the thali which comes with a variety of dishes a sweet and pan in the end .
Also the other items like rava onion dosa was good too.
Also try the gobi manchurian dry which was yumm and flavour was good.

The puri with aloo sabzi was good and quite filling.

The other items in the menu looked good too .

Long standing restaurant in Chennai

This restaurant in New Woodlands Hotel is one of the long standing restaurants in Chennai. It is a pure veg udupi style restaurant famous for breakfast and meals. This restaurant is always full at whatever day of the week as it has regulars.

Recently I have visited this place for breakfast and food was great. Idly was soft and big. Dosa was crisp and a big one too. Sambar was top notch. The downside is the pricing is too high. A plate of idly is around 90 rupees which is costly. Service is quick.

Ambiance wise the restaurant looks old and can be renovated.

An old timer. A legendary, South Indian restaurant serving authentic delicacies.
People say that quality has dwindled with time. I would rather say, they stick to good old practices of culinary techniques and and have not changed with times to cope with stiff competition. In fact, that’s their plus.
Always suitable for a quick breakfast after a morning jog. Ample parking and the pleasant ambience make friendly as well as family dining suitable.
Idli, kitchadi, vadai, dosa, poori, Pongal and last but not least, filter coffee. Kitchadi is one of its kind here and must try.
Friendly and quick service.

A haven for Vegetarians!
If you've turned Vegetarian from an ardent meat rater, then you should definitely make this place a regular. I've been to this place more than 10 times I think and so far I've pretty much liked what I ordered.
My personal favourite is the - Vegetable Biryani and Paneer Butter Masala and the Naan or the Butter Roti is also equally incredible.
The service is top notch though some waiters expect a hefty tip in return (not in every case but some).

Overall I love the ambience though it can get a bit chilly due to the AC.

Krishna Restaurant in New Woodlands Hotel is one of the few places in Chennai which still retains the old-world charm, reminds you of the nice feeling of having visited it with parents as a kid. Some of the other similar places which bring back pleasant memories are Hotel Palmgrove, Hotel Maris, Hotel Ashoka, to name a few! I’ve been here a few times and it has been pretty much the same always, good food and service.

New Woodlands Hotel's Krishna Restaurant is still a front runner for good South Indian meal. Must try of course is - their idli, vada combination and their dosas. I loved their Mysore masala dosa - it had a spicy, tangy chutney inside and was superb. I also liked their rava dosai, podi dosai and parotta kurma. While it is a good place for South Indian dishes, I was pleasantly surprised when the Chinese noodles, ordered by my young niece, was fought over by other family members. The chinese noodles had a very Indo-Chinese taste and was actually a good main course. However, it is wise to stay clear of North Indian dishes here. There were all quite average.

Good price and good service if you are lucky. When it is crowded, which is almost always, it will be a blessing if a waiter remembers any additional order you make. So it is better to give the order properly in the beginning itself. And don't forget to complete the meal with a tumbler of hot, filter coffee. Yumm.

Love this place! It is definitely over crowded during weekends but their service is prompt and the staff is very polite. I love their meals they are luscious. It starts with the soup and ends with the sweet pan and ice cream. Every dish served on the plate has its own authentic flavour. The rasam is my personal favourite and always tops the list in every meal I eat :) definitely going back for my Sunday meals! 😊

This place is amazing from the point of view that they have maintained their quality standard over so many decades. I've been there as a kid with my family, infact my parents' wedding reception was at woodlands. Went there recently after 15 years since my friend kept talking about the Mysore Masala dosa there. (She's a regular at woodlands with her family). Dropping in on a Sunday evening with my dad. We had a mysore masala dosa, poori, idli and coffee. We usually don't eat that much but the food was amazing! They have their own signature taste which makes the food here stand apart from the typical sangeethas, vasantha bhavans, HSBs and A2Bs. Pricing is very decent for the quality and taste of the food.

It been nearly 4 months since I reviewed and had food outside. So had an outing to an very well known place In Chennai and a very grand old place named as krishna restaurant at the New woodlands for dinner. The place was jam-packed but the rotation and seat filling is very quick within 7 minutes we had got a table. The menu is very typical of any south Indian restaurant with tiffin some north Indian ,Chinese, fruit salad etc. Since being in Chennai I hadn't have tatsed the typical set menu and gosh it was way above the pay grade. Amazingly hot,Delicious, authentic, and 3 times refilling worthy. For an appetite like mine I had that rasam like an BBQ buffet along with the raita and porial. The best part apart from the food was the service. I bieleve this is the only place in Chennai were u would get not 1 not 2 but every serving fresh and hot yes hot. No places be it LEELA,ITC grand ,HYATT,WESTIN give second serving hot and maintain that temperature. It's amazing to see that consistency. The restaurant ambience is well maintained and very well polished. The cost is very nominal and worth every money I spend.
The best set meal authentic south Indian meal and way way better than the hotel names provided.
Can go anytime and relish

One of oldest and traditional food joint in Chennai... They are popular for their breakfast and south Indian meals.... I usually go to this place at least once a week for breakfast or lunch or dinner....

My lil one likes to keep it simple and always order poori and subji.... It comes nicely puffed up and served hot with masala and chutney....

My wife and I try to experiment a little... I think we have ordered everything available in their menu for breakfast.... Rava masala dosa and ghee roast is our all time favorite... If you don't mind having spicy food then you should order their Mysore masala dosa or plain Mysore dosa... It's full of flavors and a tad spicy...

Their meals is awesome... The service is good... They tag one waiter per table and the waiter ensures to be around until you ask for bill... They always are kind to allow my kid to share the meals... She enjoys the dhal chawal and appalam...

Authentic kannadiga desserts are very good... However I have never had an excellent dessert in this place... May be that's why they are not getting 5/5 in this review... If they add some nice dessert options it would be a complete restaurant...

It's gets crowded here on all days... So be ready for some waiting time...

1. Masala Papad – INR 42.38/-

Average. That’s it. The onion, capsicum & tomato diced vegetables that were sprinkled on the papad was lot spicier than it should be

2. Butter Naan – INR 59.33/-

After a long time having this usual templatey item. Nostalgic indeed. The butter naan connected with us ever since we learned New Delhi is the capital of India 😜😜. Along with Panner Butter Masala they made us to have it irrespective of the time of the day.

3. Paneer Kofta – INR 177.97/-

The costliest in the order. Expected more as this is the paneer that I have been longing for almost a week now, but it ended up being just ok. The choice of the dish was my brother’s, as he had come for the weekend from trichy. Unable to compete, had to eat this with Naan, Roti and Pulao 😭. Even your wildest enemy should not be punished like this.

4. Veg Pulao – INR 152.55/-

I see you have already started talking about the existence of Veg Pulao and Biryani. It’s all fate. I m a vegetarian. Ordering Biryani was too mainstream and hence we went for this. It tasted great. The dish was the SJ Suryah of Spyder. All the vegetables nicely diced, cashew perfectly roasted, rice particles spearated one by one 😍❤️ this was the show stealer. Must try here 😊

For other hotels PM me :)

I didn't plan on having lunch here today, but thought I'll give it a shot. With a pretty good appetite I walked inside Krishna restaurant. I was a solo diner so it took only a few minutes to get a table, but I was surprised to find the place fully occupied at 2 PM on a weekday afternoon!
Without much hesitation, I went for their thali. It came with two poori, one brinjal curry, a sweet, Dal, sambar, kootu, vetha kozhambu, rasam, curd pachadi, curd, mor kozhambu, ice cream and Beeda. Unlimited rice with a LOT of ghee!
Most of the items were pretty good, no complaints. But I specifically loved their mor kozhambu and their vetha kozhambu.
Bill for meals with taxes - 230.
Overall, I'm satisfied!

Krishna restaurant is situated inside New Woodlands hotel in Mylapore. They have been maintaining their standard and quality for a long time. I landed in Chennai on this day, was hungry as hell and headed here for lunch. They were kind enought to give hot Jeera water, and follow it up with what tasted like home made South Indian meal (rice, and curries). It was divine. Staff were excellent are polite. And what more, they have ample parking.

Food is not a cause of complaint at this restaurant. Standard Udupi style vegetarian food is always reliably fresh and delectable. However, one has to take issue with the prices being increased at every small pretext of tax related changes. With the GST rate standardization, the restaurant has gone ahead and increased prices another 10%.

Guys,  1 idli (just one) and one very very small medu vada costing Rs 110 is definitely not value for money at its shining glory. At this rate, this restaurant that boasts really no star ambience or facilities is fast reaching a star hotel price range. I find this more and more unacceptable. As much as I love this restauarant for its food (like I said, no complaints there), it is becoming gradually a diminishing value of returns for me personally.
Service is very good at this restaurant as long as you don't have to wait. Once you have to wait to be seated, the subsequent service time does get impacted.

A single review that talks about what I think is not a justified increase in prices under a tax pretext is perhaps not going to make a huge difference but is something everyone should be aware of.

Price is reasonable. Worth visiting. Value for money.

Note - You will get better ambiance, more option with slightly higher price at Vrindavan restaurant which is in the same premises. Service charge will be charged @ 4% as against 1% over here. We are informed that South Indian Meals for both restaurant are from same kitchen.

I don't think anybody would read reviews for this place because if you're staying in this hotel, you'll be prompted to eat here itself. We ordered idli and vada. The taste of idli is the bestis the best i have had in chennai. Better than murugan idli, sangeetha and saravana bhavan. The idli is large, firm but soft. I could feel the layers of rice when i tasted it. The coconut chutney has the right content of coconut, salt and chilli bringing out the perfect flavors. Sambar is excellent

To top it all, the waiter asked us always if we needed extra sambar or chutney! 😀

Visiting in Chennai is a delight, but visiting New Woodlands while in Chennai is heavenly bliss! Everytime I make it to the Southern part of the Indian continent I am always prioritising a visit to Krishna Restaurant. I have to say, after 15 years of visiting this establishment nothing has changed since then. Same ambience, same waiters and same quality of food....to sum up in one word, GREAT!

My usual order: 1 plate sambhar vada, 1 plate yoghurt vada, 1 paper dosa and 1 chocolate milkshake. I ordered the same once again the the taste was stunning. My wife ordered the fried rice which she reckons is one of the best in the world! My parents ordered upma and bonda which were equally tasty.

I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Chennai and looking for an authentic south indian delight. Spot the waiter with a handlebar moustache and you will get the full Chennai experience...it's a sight to behold!

Had a quite okayish dinner here. A place to go if you're into bland foods without much spice.

The hotel is located next to Savera. You can also find Vrindhavan and Ice Cream Works next to this place.

The Cream of Mushroom soup was thick and had a lot of mushroom pieces. There aren't much complaints about the soup since most of the dishes here are fast moving and are constantly prepared fresh.

The Ghee Roast was extremely delicious but was the wrong end when it came to the size. The poori, though famous here wasn't up to the mark since the side dish is a signature example of the hotel's spice reduced food.

Gulab Jamun was hot but was too sweet for my taste.

Overall, the restaurant is a place where you can go for a quick bite at a moderate price without the food affecting your stomach.

Taste wise, i would probably give this place a 4 but lighter points because of the heavier prices. All dosas here are well cooked. I have tried the onion dosa and the onion rawa dosa. Not a place for people on a tight budget.

Visited Chennai on official trip and visited this place for quick lunch. Ordered veg aputh indian thali. Value for money and very authentic taste. Covers almost entire range of south indian dishes alongwith sweet dish and ice cream. Was left craving for more.... Personal favourite is rasam, kolambu and poriyal. Plus all this at price of ₹165 only and worth it.

I used to be a regular here, we would stay in Hotel Savera next door, and have the thali here.
It is recommended to have the Lunch Thali here. It is bustling with server trying to server all the customers, who have occupied the restaurant at it's full capacity. Its like a small market here, only everyone has already paid for their food.

The ambience is different, it isn't relaxing, it's hectic. One is served food as fast as the server can. There are multiple dishes they serve, along with puri, and rice. Everything is limitless, except the sweet dish.

The place hasn't changed much, before we had to request for spoons, and get a weird look from the waiter, now the thali comes with spoons!

Overall great experience, I would highly recommend to come here for lunch, and try the thali.

Krishna Restaurant at New Woodlands Is one of the oldest restaurants known for its quality tiffen (in South Indian parlance) and lunch thalis.Popular for its breakfast and a personal favourite of mine especially for evening snacks. The restaurant is clean with polite waiters with long years of service, typical of traditional Udupi restaurants in Chennai.Idli,Dosa and Pongal is top notch especially the sambar and chutneys are out of the world.Ideally wrap it up with a hot filter coffee. For a change during me recent visit,I had the veg cutlet which was perfect,Parotta and Kurma ,with a bit of excessive masala flavour was decent and I washed it down with a nice fizzy grape juice. If you are around Radhakrishan salai, you shouldn't miss this!

This is my restaurant of preference in this landmark hotel. It is a traditionally styled space with attractive paintings. This place is better maintained and doesn't look too old or worn out. Service is pretty decent and well mannered. Waiting time here has never been too much and it's a great place for a quick meal.

The menu is pretty straightforward and I love their tiffen items over the lunch main course. Their Poori Masala, Oothappam, Pongal and Coffee is my preferred set of orders. North Indian breads and gravies are pretty standard too. Even taste wise I find this restaurant to have an edge. No dishes here are out of the ordinary or wow, but what they serve is pretty standard and just about alright. Pricing isn't exactly nominal, quite reasonable and VFM. A great place for breakfasts!

Good place for South Indian food. I had the South Indian Thali which was fairly decent. Also tasted the dahi vada, that was good as well. There was complementary ice cream so all to the good.

I've always preferred this place for a quick bite to eat. I would never say it's cheap because the food is quite pricey.
But I like it a lot!
Simple and true south Indian and north Indian main dishes are served. They don't delay and ensure service is fast. If you're looking to go for a hearty meal.... definitely visit here.

Located inside New Woodlands complex on Cathedral road, this small restaurant still retains the old Madras charm. Despite being old school, the ambience is reasonably good. I had south Indian thali for lunch and it tastes really good. If am going there for another time its because of their service more than anything else. The staff are to be appreciated for their courteous service.

Nestled inside the New Woodlands complex in the heart of the city, this restaurant is known for it's tradition and taste. It is one of the iconic restaurants of the city and was in my wishlist for a really long time. Today had a chance to visit here and have their famous lunch thali.

Further thing which struck me is the hospitality of the staff. Right from the one who takes the order to the one who serves you, everyone is so gentle, friendly and welcoming. They serve with a smile. Even without you asking they refill the side dishes and remind is the items which will be served next. Everyone who aspires to work in the hospitality industry must visit this place at least once to get themselves trained in how to provide courteous service.

Coming to the food, the thali was fairly comprehensive. The pooris were good, not that oily. Dhal served with ghee was awesome. Sambar was very good. More Kolambu was below average. Rasam and curd were brilliant. Poriyal and kootu were good. Rice was well cooked. Appalams were well fried and were devoid of oil. Paalkollukattai was the sweet that was served on that day which was tasty. Icecream and beeda rounds off the meal. On the whole, the thali was good but the pricing was a bit on the higher side considering the variety on the plate and overall taste.

I ate here because I stayed in New Woodlands Hotel recently. I had Rava Masala Dosa which was really tasty and filter coffee which was just too perfect. They serve South Indian Thalis as well which I am sure would be good. One Tamil friend endorsed it as well!

This restaurant has stood the test of time... Even my father during his early days has talked about the food here.. We were just in time for the meals.. There were about 20 ppl in queue ahead of us.. It was about 15 odd minutes until we got a seat.. Meals was very good.. Not much variety like the rajasthan Thali if you have not been here.. There is a poori sabbji to start.. White rice pippin hot.. Sambar dhal rasam morekuzhambu curry vethakuzhambu curd ice-cream and pan.. Avoid pan.. Did not taste well.. The rest was an absolute steal for the price it was on offer 165 plus taxes.. Hearty meal.. South Indian meal.. Lost for words..

Woodlands has been the traditional family restaurant of most chennaities due to it's economical south Indian food.
The south Indian meals is a substitute for home food. Its that good and since its unlimited one cannot remain hungry.
The south Indian counterparts are good but the north Indian food is not that great here. Butter naans are hard and difficult to bite and the curries have a south Indian flavour to it unable to taste the north Indian flavours which are supposed to be there.
Ambience is not that great as its an old restaurant. Service is remarkably quick.

Pongal All items items are served hot with sumptuous accomplimemts Sambar and 2 types of Coconut chutney's. For Lunch their South Indian Thali is a must try.

One of the oldest restaurants. Heard the fake news that the Woodlands is closing and decided to come here one more time. Glad to hear that it is the fake news. As vrindavan was crowded, we had lunch at krishna. This place has authentic south indian food. The best option if you are visiting here is to choose the veg meals. The other options are not that great. Half our family had meals and were very satisfied. The other half chose north Indian food. The wait time for these was very long and the naan and the side dish was not that great. We chose punjabi paneer. A good choice if you are super hungry and are looking for a proper south Indian lunch

One of the iconic Udupi Hotels in the erstwhile Madras city . A restaurant , as we now call it , it's still maintained very well with no compromise on quality and service . It's been more than 70years since inception , and I've been a regular since my childhood . Furniture reminds us of the 60s and 70s . There are serving staff who have been here for decades , but still are courteous , quick and helpful . With the changing times , the menu card has gotten bigger with more items . But Idli /Sambar , Masala Dosa , Mysore Bonda , Khichdi , are still the most sought after .

This is one of the best restaurants for vegetarian meals. We used to go regularly and the food quality was up to the mark as always. But nowadays it has lost its charm and its taste has been below average. It would be great if they were back with the same taste.

Oh! Wow, what do I mention. An amazing food joint . I have been a customer for the past 32 years. Consistency in quality of food. Efficient service. Amazing consistency in that department too. What bothers me a bit is the consistency in decor too. That is monotony which needs avoidance. A constant regular upgrade of furniture and decor, leading to enhanced ambience would make the place attractive and a crowd puller to the generation that is after me.

I believe this is one of the oldest hotel in chennai. If you want to taste karnataka style tiffin then you must try this place. Their mysore masala dosa(available from morning til night) was too tasty and after 3:00p.m you can get mangalore bonda which is so fluffy like a sponge. The food was satisfactory and if you are visiting near to Citi center/ Light house then you can try this place

Been to this restaurant many many times and look forward to going there many more times. We get typical South India vegetarian items always tastes good on the mouth, gentle on the stomach and easy on the wallet. Food comes quickly and they staff expect you to eat quickly and vacate the table as they are in a hurry attend to the next set of customers. We were almost "pushed out" by the staff vacate the table and get of the restaurant.

Top class tasty food, tailored to customer sensibilities and great customer service. Housed in traditional architectural building. However, the table management can be better in the front desk area, especially during peak visit times. The noise and hurry-burry in waiting area diminishes the dining experience.

We had Lunch in Tanjore Restaurant 😋 It was nostalgic for me since it was my favorite eatery in 1978 when a meal costed Rs 4.50 ; then 🤔 We enjoyed the delicious Sambhar ,rice ,koottu & Poriyal 😀 Crispy Appalam just crumbled & tasted nice . Rasam was just enough spicy & very soothing to the throat at just the right temperature ! I would rate Thayir pachadi , the best that day ☝️ I have no words to describe the Paal Payasam ; so sweet & so much like Guruvayoor Temple special 😋

The go to place for good udipi style breakfast. Due to long domicile in chennai the udupi style cuisine is adapted to tamil palate to a great degree. The range of dishes is quite wide and reasonably priced. The sambar and two chutneys complement the dosas and idli vadas delectably. Filter coffee is their tour de force. A truly cherished experience.
