We took non veg meals, chicken pepper chukka and mutton balls.
Meals had typical 3 gravies with rasam, omelette etc.
No nonsense meals.
Pepper chicken flavour was good, but chicken was bit rough. Mutton balls melted in mouth.

The biriyani they serve is just like the one prepared at home, The chicken was well cooked and the hospitality provided by the staff was definitely appreciatable.
Not to forget the manager Bala who took atmost care at each and every table taking high responsibility on the food's quality and customer's satisfaction .

I have been to this place on 4 occasions and it has always been very good. Mutton Biryani is tasty though the quantity is bit less considering the price. Crab soup is very good. Twice I tried non veg meals and the curries are tasty. Contrary to many restaurants, the rice is well boiled here. So you can eat more. Once tried mutton chops curry. Both the pieces and the curry were very tasty. Also try the crab omelette here. It's very tasty.
Go here for Authentic Madurai cuisine. The biryani made from jeeraga samba rice is extremely tasty and the chicken and prawn chukka is yum. Finish off with the elaneer payasam which is to die for.
This is a great place to have Madurai style Chettinad Cuisine .. the food is out of the world .. the meals, the Muttob Biriyani, the Quail Fry and the Thalacurry are out of the world.. the Elanir Payasam is another thing which you must try .. would love to go again ..
Easily one of the best places for non veg lovers in Chennai... Ordered mutton Briyani, liver fry, mutton kola. The Briyani was very falvourful, light on the tummy and was great. The Mutton kola was one of the best I tasted in recent times. The Liver fry was also excellent. We topped up the dinner with their Jigarthanda which was very authentic.

We were in Kodambakkam area of Chennai and wanted to try some authentic Chennai Nonveg food.Some of our friends recommended us Chettinad food.
Chettinad cuisine is perhaps the most renowned fare in the Tamil Nadu. It uses a variety of spices and the dishes are made with fresh ground masalas. Spicy South Indian Authentic !
So that we searched for one Chettinad restaurant.
Madurai Kumar Mess serves some authentic Chettinad Veg Non Veg dishes.
We ordered Traditional Non Veg meals along with fried Pomfert (Vavval Meen Fry) And Prawns bkack pepar fry.
On Banana leaves lunch is being served.Wow.Felt so refreshingly different and traditional than eating from our regular steel plates.
Simple steam rice and variety of Non veg curries served.Fish curry Chicken Curry Mutton Curry and Rassam. Some beet root Veg and green leafy veg in traditional spices being served. Curries were very tatsty and different aromatic flavours to each one.These were very spicy tasty curries.Fried Pomfret and Prawns Masala with those curry leaves...Omg ! One of the most tastiest sea foods ! Sea food was very fresh and made with passion.
Please try these.Iam sure you will love it.Hmm How about some tradtional desert ? !! We ordered Their authentic Payasam.Made with cooked rice in milk their soeciality is added tender coconut. Terrific stuff !

An amazing south Indian non veg restaurant. We ordered Nandy shell-less, Kudal Kari, Nalli roast, viralmeen, egg dosa, idlies and elaneer Payasam. The viralmeen fry was amazing. The fish was fresh and the peices were juicy and succulent. We loved their Kudal Kari and Nalli roast as well.. It was as authentic as eating in South of TamilNadu. Their elaneer Payasam had the right amount of sugar and was a right desert to end this feast. The quantities were little but we were able to taste all these delicacies within 1400 bucks. It was totally a very fulfilling experience! Kudos to the management to bring such quality in spite of the huge crowd in there. We had to wait for 10 mins to get a seat but it was worth it!
Budget friendly. A typical South Indian style food served in vazhaillai . Loved their mutton biriyani and yummy non veg meals . The MUST TRY item mutton chukka ❤️ I won’t suggest you to try their dessert ilaneer payasam and jigarthanda both weren’t up to the mark.
Enjoyed the visit and tried variety of dishes. Their master piece was the kola balls - Mutton balls. Slightly spicy, soft but firm mutton balls. Surely must try this one.
Also tried their nandu soup, kari dosa, mutton sukka kada curry etc which were all very tasty and good. Only the veechu parotta was below par. Pls avoid that.
Good and fast service. The portion sizes are very small and the prices are a little above expectations. The chairs can be more comfortable and while having the spicy dishes, they should not be trying to save on electricity by shutting off a few ACs. The name "Mess" is slightly misleading - it is a proper restaurant !!!!
Good place for a south Indian food lovers, must try are mutton Kola, Crab puttu, liver fry. Liver gravy is nice with any main dish.
Location of the restaurant is exactly on the main road. Which may be conjusted for entrance and exit .
Excellent South Tamilnadu style food. Don't miss their fluffy egg dosa. Ask specifically for it because there are two types of egg dosa. I bet you won't regret. All side dishes and gravy served were tasty.. Things I tried and found to be very good were,

All of them were excellent.
Cons: Biriyani was just ok but I had it at dinner time. May be it will be good during lunch time. Soup was also average as it was not served hot during my all 3 visits.

The place is a classic Madurai favourite. The ayira meen kulambu was out of the world. Kola was on par. Kadai was ok i guess. But the place is busy and you need somekind of ambience to sit and enjoy the food. Too busy for anyone's good.. May be extend the place a bit for some privacy and ambiance.
Ordered country chicken BIRIYANI which was cooked absolutely great. Non-veg meal was extraordinary with unlimited rice and varaities of Non-veg gravies.
Center of agraction is Crab Omlet. OMG, it was ultimate though it cost high, but worth for money. Mutton cola balls was awesome with good aroma.
Overall the dishes are too good but the waiting time in weekends will be very long.
The restaurant has the authentic chetinad taste. Best place for those who like to have spicy south Indian dishes.. they have many items in their menu.
The ambience is good. Moreover the waiters behave very polite and concerned.
Try the prawn kozhumbu with any of the main course. It's really good.

This is a famous eatery in Madurai, which has found its way to chennai and got into the elite list of outlets serving “seeraga samba” biriyani. I am a big fan of seeraga samba rice when compared to basmati rice for biriyanis. This restaurant was in the bucket list for a long time and finally got to visit this place today.
The biriyani was flavourful and tasted great. For good eaters, the quantity of biriyani is definitely a bit less. The choice of side-dishes in chicken weren’t widespread. So, had to be content with what was on offer and ordered chicken roast and chicken 65. Though chicken roast was good, chicken 65 hit the nail on its head with the right amount of flavours and crispiness.
Ordered lemon soda sweet, but we were served sweet+salt. Didn’t bother to complain as it was pretty good. Price-wise, they’re ok but the only issue is the parking. Getting here by car and managing to park is a big challenge. I understand that they have valet service available though.
My cousin recommended this place heavily with a side-note that though it’s good, this is only 60% of the Madurai branch. After trying this place out, my curiosity has increased to try out it’s headquarters in Madurai when I visit next time.
Visited this place for dinner. Awesome . Reminds me of the Nativity taste. Must visit for the foodies , if you don't care about amount . Bit costly . Definitely the lovable restaurant with authenticity.

Was sceptical before ordering tandoor chicken for delivery as they are known for thier exclusive Chettinad items.
But they did not disappoint . They excel in whatever they do. Seems like tat. Very balanced spice and properly cooked. Felt mayo can be added along with the delivery.

After reading lots of posts about this place we somehow managed to visit this place today. A huge crowd was waiting outside and after 20 min somehow we got a seat. We have ordered biriyani, fish curry, fish finger, naatu Koli roast, kaada 65, crab boneless, mutton Sukka, nethili fry.. all most all the dishes was good except the biriyani. I felt the Biriyani was flavour less. However overall our experience was good.

whenever I want to have the taste of my traditional food, first thing that comes to my mind is this place. Especially their mutton dosa and mutton varuval kulambu. I like the taste of the biriyani they serve here (seeraha samba biriyani), if you are from the southern parts of TN, you will love this biriyani.
For those people who love sea food, I'd suggest you to go for their Nandu omlet, Nandu dosa, Nandu gravy and iyira meen kulambu. These dishes are simply awesome.the vanjaram and vaaval we tasted here can be given a 3*.
Even after many visits to this place, I still haven't tried any tandoori, tikka sort of food here. That's mainly because I couldn't come out of the taste of the traditional dishes.
I wanted to give a 4.5* may be because of the quantity of the food they serve. They should increase that a lil bit more as I find it very minimal.

This place serves authentic South Tamil Nadu cuisines. Went after meals with some sides. The rice and gravies weren't questionable since the gravy was spicy yet good. Refills allowed with two veg sides. Podimas was kicky and the other mutton, fish and gravies in the meal were good supplements.
Ambience:
This was the best part in this place as they had the southern touch everywhere, right from the stone steps to the wall hanging inside the restaurant. Was pretty quite and peaceful with good parking space.
Price:
It was value for money on the dishes I went after. Would try out different ones in my next visit.
Thats not the typical mess anymore.. A perfect non vegetarian kind of hotel that suits for people who love Non veg meals and Fish receipes.

Our old team met and one of them suggested this place and i dint have any expectation after hearing the name. To the contrary they blew my mind of the idlli and fish curry and the mutton balls fry make my water as i write, i would surely revisit any day anytime. 3 cheers to the team.

Awesome place to visit with family. Great food and after ordering the food comes fast . They have great waiters which are friendly with people unlike other hotels. Food taste is so good and one who is from Madurai staying in Chennai can definitely go and enjoy your lunch or dinner in that place.
Being from Madurai, Kumar Mess isn't a new encounter for me!! Kudos for presenting the same taste in Chennai as well!! Our orders were a mutton briyani, a plain briyani, mutton kola, mutton chukka and crab boneless. Everything was very well made. Was very crowded though. One small glitch was that the supplier was more keen in serving our neighbour rather than us!! Otherwise, it was mind-blowing as usual!!!!

First time tried Spicy South Indian Cuisine. It's soo good. On a crowded Sunday afternoon got a table right away easily because of just 2. Service was Quick. We ordered Mutton Kola Urundai, Mutton Curry Dosai, Mutton Nenju Roast, Mutton Brain Roast, Kadai 65, Naatukozhi Kozhambu, Onion Oothaapam and 2 Veechu parotta. Every single dish was served within 5 minutes. Will visit soon soon to try out the remaining dishes.

Amazing chettinad food all the mutton dishes are just too tasty. by far the sbest place to have chettinad mutton dishes. we had lunch and dinner fromthis place I would highly recommend to try the mutton dishes it's really good.
The outlets good but not as good as the one in Madurai, nice to have something different to them normal thalapakatti and asiffe chains. The price is slightly on the higher side but would say worth the money spent.
OMG..what a place people. Authentic TN Non-veg cuisine.. Price is damn expensive for a place named "mess". But, quality & taste beats a lot of places...fish gravy is a must have. Country chicken, gravy, mutton kozambu with rice.....But the gravy is so minuscule....steamed rice quantity is also not sufficient. Damn pricey but.
After a while,. Had to have some spicy south indian cuisine. So how was it? ,. It was worth it. The service was great. The place was buzzing as it's a weekend. Most favourite from what i had. Mutton kari dosa and prawn pepper fry was so good. Wanted to try Rabbit but was unavailable at the time. An overall good experience.

Amazing food and excellent service, parking was good with valet, yet the traffic on road was bad to pull out the car from the restaurant.
Good Place in Vadapalani. Great spread for Non Veg lovers. They have Chicken, Fish, Mutton, Crab, Duck among other stuff. Variety of preparation, with fast service and less waiting time even during peak hours.
Price is little on a higher side, but I guess good quality comes with a price. Will recommend for sure!
Excellent place for having tiffin items. Their service is very good and fast. The ambience was very pleasant and neat. We tried egg paratha, paratha, idli, chicken chukka, prawn pepper roast and kal dosa. Everything was awesome. Even their side curries were very tasty. So a must try place. They have a branch in tambaram. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
This place is a non-vegetarian and seafood lovers paradise. Anybody who loves the unique Madurai cuisine would like this place. While veg options are not too many, the staff went out of their way to recommend veg versions of popular dishes using mushrooms. Very tasty and good service. The staff knows what they are serving and will make good recommendations.

The staff were incredibly helpful, explaining the menu in English and suggesting delicious dishes like chicken dosa, egg dosa, mutton meatballs (kola), and tender coconut payasam. Authentic South Indian flavors and fantastic service made our impromptu visit a memorable one. Highly recommended for a taste of genuine South Indian cuisine in Vadapalani!

Visited Madurai Kumar Mess after almost eight years of their presence in Vadapalani. The restaurant was very crowded and we felt that it will take long time to get our seat but got ours in 10 minutes which was quick. Then immediately they took and to our surprise food was delivered very fast. The taste of food was very good and authentic. Special mention of their customer service done with nice smile and polite. Will comeback to explore more of their cuisines.Amole parking for two wheeler and car. Pls do visit and check it out
