This place is right behind the famous Kappaleshwara temple at Mylapore.

Visited this place with my friends on Sunday Early morning.

The Restaurant is highly traditional right from entrance.

The Ambience makes it very clear that they are going to serve traditional Tamil Brahmin breakfast.

The food is served on a banana leaf.

We ordered Onion vada, Ghee Podi Dosa, Pongal, Poori, Idly, Medu Vada and Coffee.

The one thing that I observed is the way they handle Food, they give the respect it deserves.

The food is Good, Dosa was brilliant, Pongal was decent, Poori with Allu Curry was great, Idly ND Medu Vada was also good.

But the best part was South Indian Filter Coffee. Brilliant!

One thing which can be improved is the Hygine of the surroundings like Tables which were not clean.

Definitely must visit!!..

Bill value : 900 for 5 people

Ambience 4/5
Service 4.4/5

Overall 4/5

One of the oldest mess in mylapore serving South Indian delicacies. Remember, it’s a mess. So, don’t expect too spicy or oily items. The dishes are more often bland than expected, giving a homely experience. It’s a small place with limited AC dining.
It’s in a congested area with almost no parking.
Not suitable for leisure dining. Good place, if you want a quick, authentic South Indian dine.
Sambar doesn’t taste like routine stuff, what you see in conventional hotels. It tastes like a pitlai. Mor kozhambu vadai was good.
Coffee was a big let down as we expected a decoction filter coffee, but machine coffee was served.
Worth visiting though.

It's a good place for homely and Hygienic food. They serve a cup of Steamed Rice, Sambar, Rasam, Kootu, Poriyal, Payasam (Only on Sunday's) for Rs. 65 which is worth it. Taste, Quality, Quantity, Service are also good. Place is quite small and they serve the same menu daily for that am reducing one star.

This place offers the best filter coffee you have tasted. The place gives a temple feel with devotional songs played at the background and the aroma of ghee. Feels like you are having from a temple mess. Have ordered coffee, ghee masala dosa and ghee roast from here. They come with 2 chutneys and sambhar. The ghee roast is huge, that 2 people could share one, if you are looking for a light meal. Altogether the taste was also appealing hence giving a 4.

This place is a childhood favourite and when one is craving for authentic South Indian Tiffan this is where you should go. When you enter you’re greeted by the aroma of filter coffee and sambar. All the dishes are served on a banana leaf. My favourites here are:-
1) badam Halwa-50 gm for ₹80. Melt in your mouth goodness.
2) gingely oil podi dosa-9/10–my Personal favourite. Ghee dosa option also available. (₹105)
3) ghee rava pongal-8/10–scrumptious Pongal oozing ghee. Lots of quantity for one person (₹110)
4) ghee rava kichdi-8/10–same as Pongal (₹95)
5) adai aviyal-8.5/10–crispy onion adai served with a mildly spiced creamy vegetable aviyal (₹115)
6) Keerai vada-9/10–famous here & must try! (₹55)

An early morning visit to Kapaleeswar Temple, and just behind that this age old restaurant. The ambiance is no less than a temple. The food is also Damm tasty. We had ordered masala ghee roast dosa, pongal, vada and filter kaapi (coffee).
All dishes were utterly delicious, specially the pongal. The smell was so inviting, forgot to take pics😉

Went to have idli, but was over when I reached. Go before 9am to have idli. Had ghee dosa, medu vada, kichidi and coffee. Medu vada was the best I had till now, crispy outside, soft inside. Dosa was not crispy which I loved. Filter coffee had heavy coffee flavour and a bit bitter taste, have to say it's one of the best authentic coffee in Chennai. Must visit to experience authentic Chennai dishes.

It was a Saturday night and quite late. Around 10’o clock. We were looking for an option to have south Indian vegetarian food. First tried Woodlands near Mylapore but it was way too crowded, thanks to the Carnatic concert in the nearby museum theatre. Woodlands did look cool. Have to definitely try the next time.

Our next option en route to Thiruvanmiyur was Saravana Bhavan. One restaurant which comes at the top our mind whenever we think of vegetarian food. Thanks to my constant browsing of Zomato, when we were waiting for green signal in Luz, I got reminded of Karpagambal Mess. Dimag ki batti jala de. I patted my back for that. It was a good decision to make. Not every day we venture out for a vegetarian restaurant. And like this, you plan all of a sudden to visit a legendary restaurant it sure is memorable.

As it was around 10PM. Most of the shops near the temple were closed. In fact Karpagambal Mess was the only shop with lights at that time. Thanks to the huge road, parking wasn’t a problem. But the mess was messy. I thought it’d be brighter than that. But it was reasonably neat and so were the prices. When a restaurant gets this much fame, the prices automatically shoot up. So comparing the prices to legendary status, the prices too were pretty nominal.

We had to wait a good 15 minutes because of a senior citizen who’d never budge from the speed at which he was drinking coffee. He was drinking at 2 ml/minute rate without any concerns whatsoever. Once he got up and I got seat we ordered Rava Pongal, a dish for the first time I’m hearing about, along with Plain Dosai and Vazappu Uthapam, again a first time dish. The Dosa varieties are quite common in other restaurants as well because it’s easy to be creative there. But with respect to Pongal it always has been either ghee Pongal or Rava Kitchadi. Why didn’t it occur to anyone to have Rava Pongal which is so easy to make and equally awesome.

Rava pongal was served with a complimentary Avial. Not sure it was a one off thing or it’s done in a regular basis. But the combo was deadly with Avial having that slight bitter curd taste. The same was given as side dish for Uthapam too. For all the dishes Coconut Chutney and Sambar were at the table. Sambar was awesome as expected. The quantity too was quite huge. Having been used to HSB it was very tough to finish a plate of Pongal here. Coffee at last wasn’t up to standards. Is there any place which can beat Hot Chips coffee?

Add to it the waiters are very friendly and easily makes you feel at home. That’s the thing with messes; they are good at making you want to go there again. For householders there are many powders, pickles available, of course the rates are exorbitant but after all you’re in a mess which has survived decades of commercialization.

Ideally we’d have liked to end the day with Kalathi Kadai Rose Milk but it was too late so couldn’t. Better luck next time. For us!

Been to this place after a decade and I would say it still retain its old world charm with walls fully decked up with hindu deities and hand written menu boards.

This place is a must visit for any foodie who relishes south indian fare and filter coffee. One must try their dosa's and variety vada's with filter coffee. I would suggest to opt for Air conditioned enclosure though tad costlier as we tend to feel too sultry and hot in common space.

PS: A must visit to visitors of chennai to have a feel of authentic south indian fare.

The food is so yummy and the cost is pocket friendly, you're sure gonna enjoy this place.
My friend felt like this place looked like an ethereal temple and the place looked so homely. The food is also really good for your health and the taste will sure remind you, your grandmother. To anyone, who looks authentic south indian food, you should give this place a shot!

Never had a halwa like this before. The keerai vadai was not so hot but still ok. The nei podi dosa and Idiyappam were very good as well. Overall the price for these 4 items in AC hall was 375 which was a bit too pricey for the quantity, ambience and the food.It would be great if they can make it less pricey.

This is one of the places I have been visiting since childhood after my dance recitals in Mylapore or after my visit to the temple . I went back there just to eat at this place last week . This mess has all varieties of South Indian food . If you are one of the person looking for cleanliness then this isn’t the place . The waiting time isn’t much here as the food gets delivered very fast .I had been there with my family and we ordered idly , ghee roast and masala dosa . Idly was very soft and fluffy . Ghee roast wasn’t too crispy nor too oil . That’s a bad and a good point . Masala dosa was very good . Then coconut and groundnut chutney were just too good along with the sambar . I ended it with some hot filter coffee . It was really strong in flavour. This place is a must try if u a going to mylapore .

Mylai Karpagambal mess has its own legacy and it reminisces back more than 5 decades. A typical chennaite sure must have heard about this lovely mess. Its located quite opposite to the mylapore temple.

On a Saturday morning, stepped into this mess for a blissful breakfast. The ambience was pretty much good strikingly filled with artwork.

We quickly went for couple of plates of idly and vadaicurry. The effervesence of the banana leaf, kept us more intrigued to linger our taste buds..

Were greeted with idly and vadai curry served with 2 types of chutneys and sambar. I'd love the idlies which were prepared in cloth and kept in steam in the idly vessel. It becomes more fluffy and soft, and indeed it was the same kind provided here. Vadacurry were spicy and so bloody palatable.

Also ordered sambara vadai and Ghee roast. Sambar vadai was quite distinctive, but i loved the enticing Ghee roast. Could savour the Ghee flavour all over the crispy dosa and it was so good with the sambar and the chutneys. I must admit, i fell in love with the light brown colour coconut chutney which went good with the dosa.

It would be a sin, if we not conclude our breakfast with a spl mylapore filter coffee and that's indeed a USP here. the aroma of the coffee was a bliss and pure ecstasy, and the very first sip made all the difference.

Do visit this mess for the lovely breakfast and get savoured with the blissful taste. It's slightyl over priced, but its worth. The service was quite good. Overall, one of the authentic and perfect mess which has its own history in our Chennai.

If you're in Chennai, then you should definitely to visit this place!

One of the restaurant where you'll find authentic South Indian ambiance and food.
The food is being served on the traditional leaf. We had ordered Idly, Uthappam, Medu Vadai and Ghee Roast.

1. Idly as we get in other popular South Indian restaurants is completely different from this. Here it is far more tastier and finger licking.
2. Medu Vadai was dipped in Sambhar and was delicious. 😋
3. We had expected the size of Uthappam to be small but to our surprise it was king sized! 😯😅
4. After all this, the little space in our tummy was satisfied by the Ghee Roast. 😁

Curd rice - a bit warm but made up in its taste served with pickles.

Visit: 7 Jan 2018

When C invited me for a photo walk during Mylapore festival, I was more than happy to accept. The only thing that I could happily wake up on Sunday early morning – fooooood! Mylapore is well known for some of the legendary eateries and this time we decided to visit Karpagambal mess. I was almost starving for breakfast and could not help but literally devour!

This place is located on East Mada Street, just a few meters away from the ‘therr’ & diagonally opposite to Rasi silks.

Menu: 3/5

They had typical south indian breakfast menu. Every item on the menu had a ghee or gingelly oil alternative. Though the items on the menu as such were limited, they had good variation to every item, with a traditional touch.

Ambience: 3/5

This is a small place functioning in an old house. It had the table-chair set up that is typical to any mess. There is a small AC section with 4-5 tables (the price of every item in Rs10-15 more in the AC section). The entrance counter was traditional and reminds us of the 80’/90’s hotel experiences. However, this place is comfortably frequented by families and runs full house during peak hours. You can visit this place without any regrets if you prioritize good food over ambience.

Taste: 3.5/5

The order: Ghee Pongal, Ghee podi dosa, Idli, Vazhapoo vada & Water Bottle.

The ghee Pongal was hot and tasty. It had generous servings or cashews, pepper corns and was full of flavor. Idli to me, was average. Nothing to rave about. The sides were sambhar, coconut chutney and tomato tokku(onion-tomato gravy, it should have a name but I refer to it as tomato tokku). I don’t eat coconut chutney so no comments. Sambhar was typical tambram, arachi vitta style tiffin sambhar. It was quite runny and bland for my liking. Tomato tokku was good.

However, the star was the ghee podi dosa. I really loved it! The podi was different than usual. It had strong gingelly & pepper flavours, coarsely ground and a very deep shade of reddish-brown and quite spicy too! Surprisingly, the sambhar went quite will with podi dosa. I would love to take this podi back home if I could! Vazhapoo vada was hot and crispy and quite big in size. This was also nice. Overall, the food was good.

Service: 3/5

The service was prompt, neither out-standing nor did it have any complaints. People here work the old hotel ways. They keep a close watch to your orders and requirements at the same time seem quite unnoticed as well.

Value for money: 3.5/5

For the full order including taxes, the bill summed up to Rs.285 for two people. The food had no complaints. This is a decent bet for a place that comes with a popularity tag.

My take:

A small place with traditional tambram home style food. This is for sure a place that fits into ‘been there done that’ list in Mypalore. I recommend to give this a shot to satisfy your food explorations!

Quick review:

Food: Good in taste, well cooked; but nothing out of the ordinary.
Ambience: Home-like dining
Service: Polite neutral staff

Detailed review:

If you like South Indian cuisines, you'll only like to try this place out once. Because there are a lot of good places to eat in the same locality which have a reasonable price model.  The Banana leaf dining will give you the South Indian feel, but any foodie who's tasted good South Indian Food would say there's nothing unique about the food Mylai Karpagambal mess.

Tried the usual Breakfast Menu with another foodie- Pongal, Plain Dosa and Ghee Podi Dosa(with some additional side dishes). Paid a whooping INR 308 for the same.

Eat here when you've tried the other good eateries in Mylapore

The podi dosai is awesome. Fried in gingely oil and stuffed with podi, it is that right combination of crispiness and succulence which makes you drool. The coffee with its rustic chicory strength is the right breakfast concoction. High on authenticity, the fare is a tad overpriced.

Some proper quality good. Been here before a week. Limited menu and great tastes.

What's best here? Dosa Varities, the sambar and chutneys are amazing.. may be it's because of the look and feel, which is more divinely. I enjoy being here, having some food.

Always busy one. Keera Vadai will also be good to Taste.

What is he most part of concern is pricing. Would say it too much of cost. Affordability is definitely something u will surely think off. Quality or brand name. Don't know why it is.

Don’t ever miss the coffee. Price wise it’s expensive, it was really hot and fan wasn’t sufficient to cool us down. If you opt for AC option you have to pay 20rs extra on all items, menu is available in their website. Try it once or couple more times for an excellent taste but do not experiment.

Neat and clean ambience. Must try tiffin items and coffee but bit costly. We had 2 sets of poori, standard peas was included in their masal. Parking for two wheelers and cars on road only. Service was quick and polite. Its near the kabaleshwarar temple. They do a good initiative by placing a bowl of water and a tub of pedigree for street dogs at their entrance.

Iconic place to eat. "Karpagambal mess since 1953", 70 years... unbelievable. Old traditional building, this place looks like a temple, and the food served is as tasty as prasadam. Tried their hot, bulky, medu vada. Crispy outside and totally soft inside. Next was 'Soji appam', a unique sweet. It is similar to the Poli/ BOLI but with kesari stuffing. The podi dosa was ultimate. And all this ended well with a traditional style Mundhiri cake (cashew sweet). This restaurant is located relatively on a broader road compared to other narrow streets of Mylapore. Car parking is available on the side of the entire street.

Very old mess. I have been vining this place for the past 20 years now whenever I am in Chennai. This place never disappoints. Very limited veg menu. Go in if you like authentic South Indian dishes. Nothing fancy or the ambience. Just visit this place for the food taste and the experience.

If you are in Mylapore (Chennai) this is the place I recommend for South Indian food. Had this ghee roast yesterday and it was just amazing. Place is just opposite to main Gopuram of Sri Kapaleeswara Mandir.

It's a good place to have light food after darshan. It's just in front of temple and it's old but the taste is good. Felt a bit pricey as a student but food was worth the money. Many more shops are there and it's a good place to visit. Must visit

The Mylai Karpagambal Mess is a great place to visit for those looking for delicious vegetarian food in the vicinity of the Mylapoor Kapaleeswara temple. The location of the hotel is convenient as it is located close to the temple, making it an easy walk for devotees after a morning visit. The restaurant serves tasty vegetarian food, and the sweet dishes are especially popular among visitors. However, it is advisable to reach early as there are chances that the food gets finished by the time you reach. During my visit, I arrived at 9:30 am and found that the masala for Poori and Masala dosa had already run out. However, I was still able to enjoy the Podi dosa and Onion dosa, which were both very delicious. Apart from the food, the staff behavior is noteworthy, and they are always friendly and welcoming. The servers are attentive and make sure that your dining experience is pleasant and enjoyable. One drawback of the restaurant is the limited parking space. There is no dedicated parking available, and you will need to park on the road side. However, this is a common issue in the area and shouldn't detract from the overall experience of the restaurant. Overall, Mylai Karpagambal Mess is a great place to visit if you're looking for delicious vegetarian food in the vicinity of the Mylapoor Kapaleeswara temple. With its convenient location, tasty food, and friendly staff, it's definitely worth checking out.

This place is a hidden gem in Mylapore (for people from other areas). Located just outside the main entrance of the Kapaleeswaran temple, this restaurant serves really delicious South Indian food. I had the rava kichidi, ghee plain dosa and the keera Vada. The cost came to 275 which seems slightly pricey, however the taste, quantity and quality of the food deserves five stars. The service is fast but the cleanliness needs to improve.

Being a local, I have always enjoy getting take away, sometimes dining here for breakfast or lunch or dinner. Place can be little more spacious as there is always a huge crowd in this place. They don't have any other branches. Pongal Vada is awesome with spicy chutney combinations. Filter coffee is different level. Vathakulambu taste is still lingering in my memory. Most of their dishes are served hot and is of good quality and taste! Bit pricey but the quality is met! Even for a curd rice, it's yum! Highly recommend place for South Indian food lovers. Anytime you visit Mylapore, check this out and you will understand about their food quality!

Have been visiting this Mess for over 40 years now. It is a must visit place whenever I come to Chennai. Quality of food is almost the same as it always used to be. Service is also good though the personalized service of those days is somewhat missing. Still worth a visit.
