Since i live next door, i have not missed the sunday evening milling crowd around the restaurant. Wonder why the restaurant looks like it has received no face lifting in a very long time! That apart, we did get to eat a decent Sunday breakfast. Mysore masala dosa, single vada and coffee, for two of us cost us around 400 rupees. Thankfully, the aloo filling inside the dosa was not runny, which often turn the dosa soggy. Sambar had the mild sweetish-ness to it, just the way i prefer. The ubiquitous red chutney of chennai eateries was missing, to be replaced by a browner version, which I presume is of fried and ground daal, it wasn't bad either. But the miserly portions of sambar was the disappointing part. Nevertheless, it's good place to visit if you like the Udupi style breakfast.

Visited this place two days back and i am huge fan of this place and it was great overall, tried the paneer tikka surprisingly it came early and the taste was just spectacular to be honest and we ordered one more plate after finishing the first one, then tried the Mangalore bonda it was super great and awesome which has 10 pieces with sambar and chutney, the malga podi idly was okay because it had too much ghee on it and could have been improved, the methi dosa was good and Raja Raja cholan dosai was okay because the stuffing was very heavy and dosa side and upper layer was crispy for few minutes but the bottom layer was not crispy because of stuffing and side and upper layer are crispy around 2-5 minutes not more than that, which the dosa also could have been improved, tried the kadabu which is equivalent to idly was great accompanied with sambar and chutney but the white kurma was okay in my opinion, the onion podi upthappam was also great, plain idly and idly dipped in sambar was also nice,we ordered chilli cheese toast that was also awesome and in continental tried the pasta that is the spaghetti neopoliton was just great,it had quality and quantity was fulfilling with great vegetables like sweet corn, capsicum and bell peppers which was just treat and awesome, coffee was great and sizzling brownie was just awesome to complete a stunning dinner meal at Mathsya,Egmore.

This was a good place with pretty good ambience the service was really responsive and quick too. Talking about the food were good it was typically with a good udpi flavor. There was a perfect balance of quality and quantity. Sweets were too good, especially waffle was different so thick and different. panner was a bit sweeter, Lotus stem waa too good jtz drolllzzz must try. Warp’s stuffing was good not so spicy was in udpid style veg well cooked dish nachos were very good must try. They definitely have to work on honey chilli potato warp was a bit average because kinda they poured honey on top of it the honey taste was more dominating than the rest. Mushroom were good. Chats were pretty good too this place is a a must try for vegetarians from who is into udpid style foods. Over all really a good place I definitely recommend this to you.

Food was decent. Not so tasty as I
Expected. Had French onion soup which was apparently soup of the day; tasted like rasam with fried onions.
Rava dosa not crispy enough
Pesarathu ok not very good
Mysore masala dosa; masala was very less but taste was better

Service was slow.... Had to wait for our beverages.

Decent place... Don't expect much and go

Food:
Rocket Masala Dosai – A 4 feet long Dosa painted for the gormandizers in Chennai; very crispy and soft on the inside with potato curry filling; some can finish it as a ONE-MAN ARMY.
Raja Raja Cholan Dosai – Expected it to be spicy but still was good with Onion-Tomato curry on the inside; sambar in specific went well with all the Dosas.
Methi Dosai – Herbal, healthy with Podi spread as raindrops all around.
Special Masala Papad – Typical Papad but with the veggies on top it was almost like Nachos and Salsa.
Sizzler Chocolate Brownie – The most sought-after dessert for its captivating look within the frame; soft, smooth and chocolaty.
Blue Curacao & Pina Colada– Sweet minty mocktail with a kick in every sip; the latter was thick but couldn’t find that taste spike as in Curacao.

Ambience:
One of the legendary veg-only places; had no waiting time; the environment inside was classy and pleasant. The lighting was toned down to set the feel and we had good service. I reckon they had valet parking but not sure with that.
Pricewise this place wouldn’t make you regret and their brand name goes a long way down the timeline.

Mathsya is a well known veggie restaurant that is known to serve some lip smackingly delicious South Indian food for almost a decade long or so. It is known for consistently maintaining its standard, unlike it many other counter parts over this very long time.

This place is mostly crowded and it's some times difficult to get table during peak hours. It's already quite a landmark by itself and so let me just skip the part of where it is and so on.

My favorites here are the Mysore Masala dosa, Neer Dosa and Rasa vadai. Their dosa goes well with Sambhar and chutney, which actually turns out to be an excellent accompaniment. In my view, Rasa vadai from Mathsya is one of the best that you can have in Chennai.

Service is pretty decent and pricing is little on the higher side. If you don't mind spending few bucks more for some tasty veggie food, give this place a try.

Happy Eating :)

Good, standard South Indian fare - Udupi style breakfast items done right. Mathsya is an institution with appeal across all ethnicities and segments in Chennai. In my most recent trip, I was there for a Sunday breakfast. My family had Ghee Masala Dosa and Bennai Dosa with Vada. Perfectly done dosa with good quality chutney and excellent sambhar. I Had the breakfast platter with with poori, pongal, idli, vada, methi dosa and gulag jamun. Everything was well done, except for the gulab jamun which did not have the richness and had a surprising rose flavour. But one never leaves mathsya without the feeling of contentment and food coma. I am slipping into mine - nice :-)

Loved every bit of the food and ended up over eating.
Mysore masala dosa is a must try.
Thattu idly is good as well.
Cheese dosa, green herbs dosa, rocket masala dosa, raja raja chozhan dosa everything was mouth watering.
We did not try other variety of food like tandoori/rice etc.
Masala chai is as flavourful as it should be.
Filter coffee is okay.
All their chutneys sit right on the tongue.
Ask the staff to explain what each variety is meant for before picking your choice.
Hospitality, ambience and service is as expected .

I have been here twice. It is a low lit vegetarian restaurant of good standards. Food was good on both occasions and was up to my satisfaction. Ambience was ok and service was reasonably quick. It’s a recommended ‘go’ for veggies. Once I had Kaju Masala with Naan here. The gravy was really good. Recently I had sambar rice bowl, after a long time. One thing for sure is this restaurant won’t let you down. One should definitely try Mango Lassi here. Loved it.

2 AM and a happening crowd hanging out in the street. Loud music from a high-end sound system of a high-end car.

No, its not the midnight market in Ho Chin Min City. Nor is it a crowd in a party spot that you see on Lifestyle channels. It’s a well-heeled crowd waiting impatiently for a place in Mathsya in our very own Chennai.

Have been visiting this place since the early seventies. This review is composite of several visits. The place prior to 1974 was a restaurant attached to Udupi Home serving some very good but standard south Indian stuff – soft idlis, nice and always fresh meals, the ubiquitous Dosa etc.In 1974 the present owner barely into college forced to take over the business. He closed the restaurant during the emergency refusing to compromise on quality that would have been inevitable with fixed rates on finished goods without fettering the cost of inputs. In 1981 the quiet little place was transformed into Mathsya. And this is where crowds wait till 2 am to get a taste of the much-expanded menu. From the super soft Idlis and Apple milk that I was used to in the early seventies the menu now has North Indian, Continental, and authentic Udupi that most of other ‘Udupi” restaurants don’t serve. Both the management and the supervisory staff ensure efficient and quick service handling crowds on regular days that most restaurants don’t see even in festive seasons. The kitchen effortlessly works up excellent to well above average fare from any of the sections in the seven-page menu straddling over 375 items.

They have opened a new outlet in Adyar. Should be worth going given their ability to standardize high quality across outlets and locations.

A late family dinner was planned here. My husband’s cousin is a big fan of this place and we went there when visiting him in Chennai. Quite a simple family restaurant but the food coming out of its kitchen is great and the taste is unique. You don’t feel it is one of the hundreds of restaurants that you eat in all the time.

Prompt service was provided and inspire of the restaurant being quite crowded, the wait time was not much.

We ordered -

Paneer tikka - Soft melt in the mouth paneer marinated in a medium spicy dressing and grilled. Served with green chutney. A great start.

Kaju masala - A rich gravy with a good amount if cashew nuts. Inspire of its richness it didn’t leave you with a heavy stomach. Mild flavouring of whole spics added to the subtle richness of the dish. Went very well with butter roti and butter naan.

Mangalore garlic Rice - Another very unique dish I have tasted. Good flavour of garlic but there are no whole pieces which I appreciated. A crunchy texture added to the taste and experience.

Golconda biryani - That was one of the Dish of the day. Mildly flavoured dum biryani served with raita. Quite enjoyed it.

Dilkush dahi vada- In true south Indian style, this was served with crunchy boondi on top. The curd was tangy and thick. Fresh and well soaked soft vadas went very well with the crispy boondi. And the quantity is good for the price.

Rose milk A good accompaniment but not one of my favourites.

Thandai - This was another highlight. Full on flavoured with fennel and pepper, this was a refreshing drink.

All in all, a very enjoyable dinner and would like to visit again when in Chennai.

It has been always fantastic experience at this restaurant. Lost count of how many times have had and guess almost all varieties including meal combos are tried, tested and tasted. Maharaja Thaali, Birbal Thaali, Udupi Thaali, all are just great. The North Indian dishes are also amazing. South Indian is their strength. Guess the only improvement I would suggest is on the "Desserts", they should have more varities.

Ambience - 3.5/5    Food - 4/5  Service - 5/5  VFM - 3.5/5  Parking - Valet

Mathysa is one of the most popular and legendary restaurants of Chennai. Its been in business for more than 60 years now. And any doubts about its popularity was laid to rest when the manager told us that he works till 3AM!
The decor is simple yet elegant. A large wooden carving of Lord Vishnu in Mathsya Avatar welcomes us, and is the inspiration behind the restaurant's name. Surprisingly, for a placed called 'Mathsya', the restaurant is pure vegetarian and specializes in Mangalore cuisine. We started off with Paneer Tikka. It was super soft paneer, marinated in a curd based gravy and grilled to perfection, served with a green chutney. It got gobbled down in no time.
It being a hot Chennai evening, we ordered Rose Milk and Thandai. Both were made very well and thankfully, not very sweet. For mains we ordered Mangalore Garlic rice and Kaju Masala. I must say the Garlic rice was simply out of the world. Aromatic and full bodied, the rice was flavorful and light. It went very well with the tomato based Kaju masala. I wouldn't mind visiting the place again just for garlic rice.We then went for the day's special, Golconda Biryani. It was less oily and very different from the other Hyderabadi biryanis I've had.
We finished the meal with dahi vada. It was made in typical Karnataka style, without the chilli powder but topped with boondi. The portion sizes were more than adequate, service was prompt and waiters were courteous. The manager personally met us to enquire about the food, which I liked a lot.
Fully justified the thronging crowds in the restaurant till the wee hours of the morning. Do visit if you find yourself around Egmore and hungry for good food.

This has been my most sought place for south indian dishes over the years as i used to enjoy every bit of its food and prompt service.
But the recent visit a few days ago with family turned out to be of a lesser experience...
No doubt when a restaurent is jam packed at times the all around quality and service tend to suffer with the very atmosphere tend to suffer in the din around.
Its time the management expands into a bigger annexe close by and rework on the present interiors and on the wholistic experience it has been delivering on the food and service.
As an ardent fan of Mathsya Egmore i want it to constantly go up in its service to hundreds like me and not to loose the hard built success in the race for revenus.

I have been visiting this restaurant for ages but I never wrote about their excellent taste. If you are looking for Udipi cuisine in chennai, this is one of the must try places. Usually we order rasam vadai, curd vadai, idly and many varieties of dosa. I love their Lunch thali too. I don’t recommend you to try their milkshakes and beverages as you wouldn’t be excited about the taste. Rest for the food are guaranteed and I am sure you will fall in love with it. Decent space restaurant with less car parking facility.

Recently last Friday we crossed out one restaurant from our bucket list which was pending for a long time and it was one the best decisions made. This place is a Veg lovers paradise. Rasa Vadai and Curd vadai is the best dishes available here and oh my they were so hot literally burnt my mouth and throat. Aloo 55 spicy fry was super hot and spicy and made a great starter. Mysore Bonda was good. We had Butter Masala dosa and Mysore dosa and they were good. For dessert we had Gulab Jamun Cheese Cake and it was super Tasty (Must Try) Will we visit again? Definitely A big Yesss!!! We visited late evening around 9PM and the restaurant was packed. We managed to get a seat for two but there were lots of people who came as a family and had to wait for a long time so plan your visits early. Service needs to be improved. I understand the restaurant was packed and they had to take care lots of folks. We got lucky as we sat next to the bill counter and the staff in the counter assisted us.if not for him we wouldn’t have got our orders. Payments can be made through Cash/Card/UPI transactions

If you're a vegetarian visiting Chennai, you must visit the Mathsya Vegetarian Hotel in Egmore. The restaurant offers an extensive menu of vegetarian dishes that are both delicious and affordable. The restaurant's ambiance is pleasant, and the staff are friendly and attentive. The menu includes a wide range of vegetarian dishes, from South Indian delicacies like dosa, idli, and vada to North Indian favorites like paneer butter masala and chole bhature. I highly recommend trying the thali, which is a combination of various vegetarian dishes served on a banana leaf. The food is freshly prepared, and the portions are generous. The restaurant also serves fresh juices and delicious desserts. Overall, Mathsya Vegetarian Hotel is a great choice for vegetarian food in Chennai. The quality of the food and service is excellent, and the prices are very reasonable. Whether you're a local or a tourist, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit.

Though looked small and not so appealing at first. I wasn't sure is it a right choice to take my friends from north who wanted to taste typical South Indian meals. Man, what it delivered was complete. We were all full to the neck completely satisfied. Go to restaurant for a South Indian meals. Stands well to its name as one of the legendary restaurant serving South Indian food.

Premium fine dining vegetarian restaurant. Amazing Amazing place for breakfast. Had Masala dosa, vada and their special Rocket dosa which was 3 foot long. The rocket dosai was 450 rupees. Dosais tasted amazing, so did their sambars and vada too. Nice ambience and service as well.

A good friend turned me on to Mathsya, telling me it was the best place to great South Indian vegetarian fare. He was right! From the classic So. Indian breakfast, to great veggie entrees, to delicious Chinese Hakka Noodles...all fabulous! I also had their special Udupi Thali, which was simply amazing! The staff was friendly and helpful. The Owner told me the place has been there so long, you might see your best friend's grandfather at the table next to you!

We had been to matsaya Egmore more than a dozen times and it's still one of our favorite places for delicious South and North Indian cuisine. Service was great and the ambience is good. Would appreciate if the management can improve the restroom condition as I feel it could be restored..

Dont believe the recent fake paid reviews listed here. This place is under construction since last one month and its not listed anywhere on the business. Its definitely a great restaurant no doubt about it. I had to face the inconvenience because of the fake reviews. But looking forward to visit next time I am here.

This is again a popular Dosai and South Indian place. I ordered the litmus test dish first : idli and sambar. It turned up well. So went on to order 7-piece uthhappam, rava Dosai and ghee roast Dosai. Good stuff.

The food here was good. It's a little difficult to find. We had the podi dosai here which was really good, served with two chutneys. The mint mojito was not good at all, it was too sweet. We also had the aloo 55 and it's very yummy and a must have.
