I ordered Kausha murgh which was extremely delicious and also my first order from this restaurant. Since i liked the food so much, I ordered again, which was special Lucknow biryani. But to my amazement, food wasn’t upto the mark, it was ok, and quantity was not as per the price. And yes , it wasn’t a Lucknow biryani at all.

Totally loved the food here. One of the best places to try out authentic Bengali food. Loved the mutton curry, fish fry, chicken roll, bhaja plate and dim er dalna. It was wonderful having a koraishutir kochuri with aludum after such a long time. The Daab Chingri could have been better though, found it a little sweet. The Malpua with Rabri was brilliant! The prices on the menu are also quite correct matching the quality. Loved it!

Bayleaf is a Bengali restaurant in Gopalapuram Chennai which is on the high end side unlike petuk. The way they prepare and serve the food however makes the high cost worth it. Their menu includes an array of alleviated as well as simple dishes daab chingri, dhakai chingri or simply fulkopir dalna. Inframe: Baati chochori and rui machher kalia served with steaming bowls of long fragrant rice. If you like pancakes, then this sweet dish will be hard to miss for you! Malpua is a popular dessert recipe of North Indian cuisine and is something that you can prepare easily at home. It is a famous delight during festivals and can be prepared in several ways depending on the region. In frame: Malpua from bayleaf. Absolutely indulging. So I had the pleasure of visiting bayleaf on Ashthami this Durga Puja and try the Sharodiya menu. Here's a shot of golden moong dal with peas accompanied by the iconic chingri machher malai curry.

The place is small but cozy and clean. If you are looking for authentic Bengali food in Chennai this can come nearest to it.

The afternoon started with an average experience as mild spinach soup had no flavor at all, though gosht rassa soup was yummy. And lemon mojito wasn't cold enough. But after that everything was amazing. Bekti Fish Fry (deep crumb fried fish cutlets) and Bekti Paturi (fish steamed in mustard covered in leaves) were well cooked. Though I would have preferred larger portion size for the latter. In mains Luchi and Chholar Dal was good. And Murghir Jhol (Bengali style chicken curry) with Steamed Rice was an excellent combination. And we topped it off with a really yum Mishti Doi in desserts.

Apart from this they served complimentary paan shots at the end, which were good too.

The best Bengali food in Chennai. The food is authentic with almost all bengali food in the menu. Only place were you get the authentic Bengali Katti roll. Ingredients are fresh. I got a sneek peek to the kitchen and must say one of the cleanest kitchen that i have seen by far. Sure is a place for comfort food.

A good place off the busy Cathedral Road. The food, staff and ambience are much better than in the hotels around. We went after 10pm, the quieter the better when dining. Price-wise it's pocket-friendly as long as you don't order the pebble-sized gulab jamuns - ₹200 for four tiny jamuns and a tablespoon of rabri is more than too much. So, I'll take away one star, for now.

Heavenly home feels like food for Bengali people, but bit overpriced. Especially after the renovation, they've increased the prices of quite many items, also decreased the quantity in comparison to the prices. I don't know the reason for their such a step, maybe they are trying to gain their renovation spendings from their customers. I started the review this way, not because I have any grudge against them, I am a big fan of their food, just that the last time I've been there, I am a little disappointed considering the above points.

Anyways, keeping that aside, coming to the food, best place in Chennai for authentic Bengali food. I have been here at least 4 times, I think, every time, with my Bengali friends, and we absolutely love it. Even my non-Bengali friends are a huge fan of the food here. Some items that we order always remain a constant, like, "Fish Fry", "Macher Chop" for starters, "Rice", "Muger Dal(is absolutely heaven)","Bhaja Basket", "Aloo Posto", "Potol Posto", "Aloo-Jhinge Posto", "Potoler Dolma", "Pabda Tel Jhol", "Murgir Jhol" "Pabda/Rui Shorshe" among others for Main Course, and finally, "Chutney" and "Mishti Doi" for dessert.

No complaints on the quality and the quantity of the food that they serve, they both are perfect, just that it'll be at the cost of a bigger hole in your pocket. But damn! How I love this place, and would love to be here time and again.

Overall, Food: 5/5, Ambience: 4.5/5, Value for money: 4/5

Absolutely wonderful place for some succulent North Indian and Bengali food. The staff is gracious and will answer all you queries regarding the menu. The lasooni chicken tikka and murgh badami tikka are top notch. Unfortunately we didn't take any photos because the food smelled so good, we gobbled it all up.
Do give this place a try.

I’ve been here very frequently mainly for their rolls on the go which are amazing and the best.
Their tikka rolls are a must try.
Their rolls are pretty different and a little heavy when compared to the rest. Their chutney gives it a unique flavour to get you back there over and over again.

Good place serving some near to authentic bong food. we ordered a lot - potol pouri - not so happening. The kabiraji cutlet of fish was good. the cholar dal could have been little sweet. The kosha manghso was good.the luchis went good with kosha manghso and cholar dal. The chicken biriyani is very good. liked the rosogolla, gulab jamoon with ice cream and misti doi. All in all a good experience. service could have been a little faster.

The food never disappoints at The Bayleaf.  The kathi rolls just went through a swift price rise post the implementation of GST but the other dishes don't inflate the monthly card statement
The restaurant is on a crowded lane with bikes, cars and small groups of people lounging around the street food and chaat places in the vicinity. But parking can still be managed, except on weekends. Like seats inside the restaurant.
KIshore Kumar sings in his native Bengali in the background and while the tunes are all familiar, the words are not. Tables are close-set with 'takhiyas', the round pillows easing up against your back when you sit on the single seats.
Order anything you like. I'm told the kali mirch kabab is a big hit but even for vegetarians, the choice is extensive. You don't go to The Bayleaf for fancy food and atmosphere. You go there for nostalgia, conversations and authentic taste served by waiters who have aged with the restaurant. That's a reassuring aspect of the place. If they've kept their own people happy, you assume that they've done the same for their customers as well.  Change is welcome when it is warranted but sometimes you need to indulge the familiar.
The rotis are hot and when you tear pieces off, you blow on your fingers to cool them down - it's not the heat of the microwave. Dip in to dals, or raitas or mushroom and paneer gravies or the ones with fish and meat. One sure sign that the food is good? Tables go silent when the food arrives and everyone religiously tucks in.
Don't miss out on the sweets - from the jalebis to the rossogollas. What's a Bengali meal, or any other meal without dessert as a finale? If you like gulab jamuns, they are not just soft, but lightly spongy. Somehow, that makes a difference to the mouthfeel. You don't have to wait for the weekend to visit. Mid-week is a good idea as well.

A complete bliss for a Bengali living in the city!! Located in a prime area and serves an awesome range of Bengali dishes. 👍👍
Already been here twice. We have tasted machher chop, fish kobiraji, mug daal, bhaja basket, pabda machh and mutton 😋😋 each of them will take you to Bengal!!! After a long time we had potol er dolma and it was simply amazing..
Price wise a bit costly but then worth paying if you are longing for proper Bengali food 🤗
Mishti doi was good but jaljeera wasn't that good. Their service is really prompt with a good ambience inside!!!
Would like to visit again 😊

Bayleaf is such a great place to go, always. This review is based on multiple visits.

They make amazing bhaja and I definitely recommend the bhaja basket, which has baingan, potol and aloo bhaja. The aloo bhaja is just like chips, and isn't to my taste; potol and baingan are absolutely divine, though! This dish is well spiced, and best eaten when hot.
The paneer paratha is excellent, as is the butter naan. The roti isn't exactly as soft as I'd like, but decent. Their dal makhani is also quite good, but nothing about it really stands out.
My mother lived in Bengal for some time, and deems the cuisine authentically Bengali (judging by the bhaja and the potoler dolma). She is also a big fan of their stuffed parathas.

Can't wait to eat here again!

Our order: Bhetki fry, tandoori masala prawns, chingri malai curry, mangsho kawsha, bhetki paturi, and steamed rice. The food was just too good, the bhetki items bordering on the lines of "heavenly"...mangsho kawsha was pure bliss for someone surviving on South Indian cuisine over the last couple of months, chingri malai curry was the best I have tasted anywhere!!

The interiors give you the feel of being in the drawing room of any erstwhile zamindar family with the traditional side-pillow, heavy coir drapes on the windows, and ceiling fans that can easily stake a claim to "heritage" status. However, modern day cutlery fuses in seamlessly in the setting...

Bayleaf Gopalapuram This holy shrine of Bengali cuisine is tucked away in a lane off Cathedral Road and opposite to Stella Maris College. It is slightly on the more expensive side but the quality of food makes it worthwhile. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for some authentic Kolkata food in Chennai.

Order: 1. Malai chicken Roll
2. Chicken Cutlet
3. Fish Kobiraji
4. Potoler Dorma
6. Luchi
7. Mutton Kosha
8. Misti Doi

Verdict: Fantastic! Would be an understatement.
This is my 10th visit (no kidding) here. The bengali cuisine is pretty decent considering Bayleaf Gopalapuram is one of the limited places with a good ambience that serves Bengali cuisine.
Coming to the food. The rolls are a tad disappointing. They are more like Kathi rolls than Kolkata street rolls. The chicken cutlet is good the fish Kobiraji is a little greasy but awesome so was the luchi and Dorma. The Show Stopper though had to be the Mutton Kosha OMG it’s like the stuff of the Dreams!! Finger licking good.

3.5 actually.. On our recent holiday trip to Pondicherry/Chennai, we are putting up in a hotel in that area and looking for a semi formal North Indian restaurant. Zomato suggested Bayleaf and hence we landed here. Off the main road, slightly inside a lane, its has a comfortable, cosy setting, reminds you of old, plain vanilla setting eateries. Not much crowded, we were seated comfortably. Service was prompt, staff eager to help you choose. We had roll, dal makhani, rotis. Roll was good, dal was a bit letdown, but guess being down South that was ok. If around that area, its a good place for a quite meal which is reasonably priced.

I visited Bayleaf this Sunday afternoon with my family. The ambience was good, calm homestyle restaurant playing Bengali music in the background. The staffs were well dressed and well behaved. We ordered Betki fish fry, fish chop, egg chicken roll and rice with betki mustard curry. The fish chop barely had any fish in it but the fish fry was too good. So was the fish curry. Over all I felt content with the food.

Amazing food decent ambience, it's very favourite for me and my friend, we used to visit very frequently. Ultimate Bengali food. THALI MEALS priced in budget Fish Pathuri, prawn fry, Brinjal fry, and curries are too good. They make simple potato curry mixed with subzi a must try. The sweet dates cutney, Mango pachady, Egg curry, if you love Bengali food, then one should give a try. vRemember Thali is available only on week days. They also have egg roll, chappathi roll with chicken, mutton, veg, panneer... Small potato roll is tangy and too good.

The Bayleaf is a Bengali's home away from home. Its menu comprises of some Bengali favourites that are always executed splendidly, courtesy of its very talented mentor, Mrs.Gupta.

What you should try when you go there:
1.Luchi and chholar daal (A Bengali take on Puri, but better!)
2.Bhaja basket (comprising of fried aubergines and "jhuri" french fries)
3.Chicken cutlet (that is a sweet reminder of the same you get on the streets of Kolkata)
4.Kosha maangsho (the most perfect mutton curry that you'll ever eat)
5.Mishti Doi (perfectly set, it's a "mishti" way to end your meal)

I've literally grown up with The Bayleaf. I was 5 years old when my parents, then newly immigrated to Chennai from Kolkata, feeling home-sick, happened to discover the place while it was still situated in Poes Garden. It was still quite new back then. And now, even after 16 years, our relationship with The Bayleaf is as strong as ever.

The BayLeaf upholds its name. The taste is so perfectly traditional when it comes to Bengali dishes trust me, I've had more than my fair share of Bengali cuisine.

when it comes to North Indian dishes the taste may not be the best because it depends on your previous bouts with North Indian cuisine. I found it okay, not the worst I've had but still not at par with the taste.

The serving may not be at par but then it's the waiters. There are only a couple of waiters for like 10 tables. I don't know how they handle crowded days. Though when i went dining only 3 tables were occupied and not all at the same time, one of those 3 tables was mine.

They have 2 menus, 1 for Bengali & other for North Indian dishes. The waiters don't mention that, you got to figure it out on your own. It hampers with your order when you are placing it.

The ambience with the dim yellow-orange-ish lights and the moderate volume music is good. Keeps it lively during silences but doesn't do an over-kill. The music volume is such that any talking within the group is not disturbed and if there is a sudden silence, you can just listen to the songs. They played a mix of Hindi & Bengali that night.

All in All, a rating of 4/5 is apt.
Reduce 1/2 for the waiters & 1/2 for the North Indian dishes.

Hats off Bay leaf for such quality chicks. Had bihari kebab which is mouth watering and yummy and enough spicy, its a best recepie here.
Not big fan of tandoori chickens, but can taste ok.

Very bad fishy smell I strictly won't recommend these to any one alsooo tht combo not at all worth for the cost.. it's 850 rs... Is too pricy.. small cup of fish head curry horrible... 2pcs of fish small quantity rice... That's it.. and tried tandoori prawns is excellent textured taste well... Egg Curry is awesome taste is finger licking... Tht only helped us to complete the white rice from tht combo with additional cost... Murgh behari is goood... By far, the best place to have authentic Bengali food in Chennai. Being a Bengali in Chennai for almost the past four years, eating out and exploring places for good food, especially Bengali food has always been a priority. Though there are numerous budget restaurants serving Bengali food at pocket friendly prices, there is something about Bayleaf that makes it stand out amongst the rest.
Located at Gopalapuram, Bayleaf has a fabulous ambience. The decor gives the feel of some old Zamindar house. The aramkedara feel and the lampshades were a major attraction.
The staff were absolutely courteous and a delight to talk to and discuss before placing orders.

We started off with chicken soup. The aroma was delectable. The consistency was just perfect. A clear soup with huge chunks of well cooked and moderately spiced chicken just made our day. And as the saying goes, morning shows the day, the brilliance of the chicken soup assured us of the wonderful treat that the next few dishes were to offer.

Next, we ordered Machher chop and Prawn Pakoda. The Machher chop was so delicious.. it reminded me of the ones that one of my grandmothers used to make. A bite into the chop and I was transported magically to my schooldays when this used to be a regular treat from granny's place :) The prawn pakodas were excellent, not at all soggy; in fact pretty crisp and perfect.

A Bengali and her love for luchis is perhaps an epic saga, worth a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie. True to our love, we ordered luchis to go with Machh Potoler Dolma. Potoler Dolma is yet another nostalgic dish. I have been pretty lucky I must say, to have been doted upon by grandmothers and mother and aunts who have stuffed me with edible goodies all through my life. Potoler Dolma is again one such dish that reminds me of my Dinda. Filling the very favourite, tender green paudwals with chingri machh bata or rui machh  (in this case, it was prawns) and spices; frying them in such a way that the green colour is retained and then cooking up a curry.. heavenly!

By this time we were almost full, yet a visit to a fine dining Bengali restaurant and leaving without biting a morsel of rice and fish is sacrilegious. Thus, a plate of steamed Basmati rice and Shorshe Bhetki were ordered to satiate our taste buds. My my! Thank God we did it. The not so thick, mustard gravy and the pieces of fried Bhetki were sheer bliss. Add to it, the extra long green chillis and the tummy was as happy as we could ever imagine.

Dessert is again another thing that Bengalis can never compromise upon. In fact, we are as much attracted to sweets as ants are to sugar. And when the menu offered Mishti Doi and Rosogollas, it was like a match made in heaven.

The total bill came up to around Rs. 2000 for the three of us. We left the restaurant as a happy bunch of souls with filled tummies.

Well, there is one thing that I'd like to add here. Not a single dollop of extra oil or spice was present in any dish. Each and every dish had such a homely feel to it.

Bringing the Bengali Kolkata flavour to Chennai. Fantastic ambience and fantastic service. We ordered all sorts of dishes and everything turned out to be good. Zero complaints on any dishes. Deliciously delicious. We liked the Fish (being a Kolkata flavoured restaurant we had to) and the mutton was superbly cooked. And the desserts. Oh Man! Will come back again just for the desserts. We had Halwa and Rasagola. The best Rasogala you can eat in Chennai. Period. Overall a worthy five star rating experience.

I will be here again and again only for the tandoori chicken. Palmshore and bay leaf are the only restaurants I have tasted till now which gives the juicy and tasty and fresh chicken.

I loved the starter, this is little far from my work place, have been here only when i could, but still it's so good. Apart from the tandoori chicken, romali roti and Gravies tasted good. But I ate only chicken. And I wi come every now and then when I could.

4/5 for service, you will enjoy the restaurant.

So its a Monday night and my friend and I were heading back home after a tiring day at work. We passed The Bayleaf and decided to try this place for dinner. I have heard about the place and mainly about their authentic Bengali food.To begin with, the ambience is pretty good. The lighting is a bit dim but not so dim that we stumble on to stuff. Its pleasant. There light Bengli music in the background which is soothing. The place was almost empty when we went in. Even though it was a Bengali restaurant, we felt like ordering something else. I'd kill for paneer and so would my friend. So we ordered a plate of paneer tikka, a plate of chilli cheese french fries, one dhabewali dal, one palak paneer, two butter rotis and a plate of steamed rice.I'd go ahead and say that the food tasted good but not so good that you'd drool everytime you thought of this place. The dal and palak paneer were good but lacked the flavour that one would expect from these dishes. The butter roti was really good and the rice, well....its rice, what could go wrong with rice, right?! For dessert, we had gajjar halwa with icecream. Now that, was delicious! The staff was amazing. They were very attentive and would be right beside our table as soon as our plates were empty to serve the next dish. The pricing is a bit too high. But its worth a shot. Overall, considering the ambience, service and food I'd rate this place somewhere between 3.5 and 4.

Have both dined in and ordered home. Great place for Bengalis and Oriyas to dine out and in general for anyone who loves good food.

This joint offers up delicious Kathi Rolls. Veggies should try the Achari Paneer and Non Veg Lovers are recommended the Lasuni Chicken Roll or the Chicken Tikka with Egg Roll. You have a wheat option for the roll too.

What I love here:

Veg - Rice or Luchis with Cholar Dal, Posto and Bhaja Basket
Non Veg - Rice or Luchis with Mutton Kwasha or Chicken Kwasha (reminds me of home).

I haven't tried the Biryanis or the usual dishes like Kadai Paneer. I don't think I will get around to that. I am stuck on the Kathi Rolls, the Luchis and the Mutton Kwasha :)

You won't get these flavours in many places in Chennai!!

The beat place to try Bengali cuisine in Chennai. Prices are a little on the higher side. But the taste makes up for it. Try all the dishes here. You will not be disappointed. They need to provide parking though. It is too congested an area to find parking especially for cars.

For Bong it's a good place to go for some dishes like patoler dolma n other Bengali cuisine. But I didn't like bhetki paturi as it was not cooked in an authentic way - just steamed fish with mustard sauce!

Excellent. Authentic Bengali food down south. Best place to grab a piece of home and that too on a budget. Better than all the chain restaurant rubbish. Love the rolls in the grab and go counter as well. Do try the kebabs from their north Indian section and the mocktails. Looking forward to more outlets

The restaurant is quite easy to locate on the Gopalapuram 6th Street near Gangotree Sweets. The ambience was good with a mix of Bengali and Bollywood songs playing in the background. We ordered Lucchi, Cholar Dal, Alu Posto, Doi Fulkopi, Betki Paturi, Sorshe Ilish, Bhapa Chingri, Mutton Kosha, Chicken Mango Barbeque, Fish Chop, Chicken Roll, Saundhe Alu Roll, Rosogolla and Aam Pora Sherbet. The vegetarian items mainly the alu posto and cauliflower was not up to the mark at all. Rolls were quite good, The non-vegetarian items although good in taste didn't match what we get in Kolkata. Also the quantity we got against the price paid was not quite generous. Rice servings were very low in quantity also. The rosogolla was not that fresh and the aam pora sherbet lacked the tangy spark it should've had. Overall it was not a value for money experience although for a taste changer people who hails from other parts of India than Bengal can try this restaurant.

Nice place with good ambiance. I tried the achari paneer tikka roll with a wheat base rather than a maida base and it was good. The paneer was soft and since we had ordered the double, it was filling as well. Then i tried the tandoori roti with alu gobi. Most restaurants might fill it up with loads of potato, but this had equal portions of both and the spices were good as well. The personal favorite in a bengali meal for me is the dessert. Had to try the rosagulla and it was good, except that i expected them to be bigger typical of how you get in kolkatta. We also ordered jalebi which isn't there on the menu and that was quite good as well. They top the jalebi with crushed cashew and the shape of the jalebi is also unusual.

Bored of those stereotypical dishes, want to try some authentic Bengali cuisines ,then this place is a must, the starters(fish kabiraji) are really good, but needs a lot of improvement on the sorse(mustard) dishes of fish, actually a lot of kasundi(mustard sauce) was used instead of mustard, luchi(poori) and khawasha mangsho is a great combo, and the those soft tender hot Rosogolla(s) will definitely give you a shot of sweetness, overall after a hectic day , one can easily fulfill his stomach at a reasonable price

A good place for enjoying a nice bengali cuisine. The dry banana cutlet (mochar chop), aloo poshto (not in menu but they will serve it), pea stuffed puri (koraishuti'r kachori or lucci) and kosha mutton were especially great. The other items are also good, but these above mentioned items are of worth trying. Altough the ambience is mediocre, and service is also average, their quality and taste of food were extremely good and satisfying. It also can't accomodate more than 30 people and they can't sit together too. If ambience and service would have been better it could easily get a 5 star, but food taste is still noticeable.

Kind of the only fine dining Bengali restaurant in town. The prices are a little steep compared to what you get as food. They are kind of playing on their monopoly I would assume. Certain items are good like their dhokar dalna and mochar chop. I personally don't prefer their chicken dishes, maybe because my mom makes way too good food compared to this. That aside it's a nice cozy place with good interiors. Check out their antic ceiling fan , it runs too !! Location is quite convenient but parking is less. If you are in town and badly craving bangali food I would definitely recommend.

Bayleaf is an authentic Bengali resturant in midst of namma Singara Chennai! Bengalis Are sweet toothed from birth. So let me start with desserts - Gulab Jamun = Yumm, Mishti Doi = Yumm Yumm! Food is very good. They cook in mustard oil. Non Bengalis please note. Very good options available in veg and non veg. They also have couple Jain food options. They Have introduced some north indian dishes in the menu. I wish they haven't but it is ok. They also have specials during Durga Puja and Kali Puja. Service is good. The wait staff are dedicated and have remained the same since the restaurant opened. Do go with their suggestion if you are a first timer. They will suggest you the best combo based on your preference of choice of Veg, meat n spice levels.

I would say it's definitely one of the good restaurants that serves Bengali food and to my surprise I could barely taste the mustard oil! I think that's because they have fine-tuned the food for the people of Chennai. The food tasted good and service was okay. I definitely had a good time :)

Authentic bengali good in chennai with good ambience. Must visit with families . Space is small and difficult to get seats , so book in advance . Parking is difficult due to narrow road, but sometimes they do have valley parking to help with. Go for it and savour your taste buds.

I as a bengali went to this restaurant to eat their bengali food. Service was good and ambience was excellent. However, out of what we ordered the chicken was too spicy. The murgh malai Tikka was hot and tasty, so would recommend The ice cream Sandesh was excellent and it is a must try. Overall, it was an excellent Bayleaf of food and would recommend whenever you are in Chennai.

They have Bengali, North Indian, Tandoor and Chinese Cuisines. It was very tasty and fresh. Pricing is slightly higher than what it is supposed to be. Hygiene and quality of food was really good. Service is excellent. For one adult it would cost 700 INR. Place for parking is a problem. Not sure if they have ballet parking. You can check. Ambience of the restaurant awesome.

Good quality food and hygiene maintained. A bowl of any curry is suitable for two individuals. But they take plenty of time to serve, approx 35-45mins. Another thing, I felt was wash basin( a record breaking tiny one) is just outside the main dining area instead of being inside the restaurant. No toilets too. Rest its good for a family/group dining probably. Parking area is very less probably for two cars. Mutton curries are approx. 500 and above. Veg pulao costs somwhere around 230₹. Average cost per person goes around 600-700.
