Excellent sambar. Best quality and unique taste.
Food 4/5, Ambience 3/5, Staff 2/5
Yummiest sambar idlies with unlimited sambar refills! Quick service. Only needs improvement on the restaurant cleanliness and food service by the staff, as they are often quite in a haste.
Just went on a Sunday lunch with family to have meals.
We ordered for limited meals which includes- a bowl of rice, sambhar, rasam, kara kolabu, poriyal, kuttu, podi, ghee, curd, buttermilk, appalam, roasted chilli and sweet
The taste was just wow. Loved each and everything😘.

First place which comes to my mind for yummy idly and sambar is Rathna cafe...
Food: A plate of idly drenched in pipping hot smabar .. definitely need two bowl of sambar... Here I literally not eat their samabar but drink it...
Why Ratna Cafe: Hyped among the South Indians, Ratna Cafe won hearts in the past, and is continuing to do the same by keeping its customers on the loop always! What's better? Regular customers pulling in other customers as a company, in their loop.
Food Served: They have the softest, crispiest, oil-less Medhu Vadais and the tastiest sambars in Chennai. Although the batter of the Mini Idlies had gone sour probably because we ordered at 9pm, I'm sure they taste fresher in the mornings, which is why I gave them a 4 star rating.
Service: Always Smiling. Always Welcoming.
Restaurant provides valet parking option. Ordered idly, medhu vadai and Mysore masala dosai. Idly Sambhar was very good however a person who has visited Triplicane Ratna cafe will definitely find the difference in taste. It's always a bliss eating Idly with hot Sambhar and this place never disappoints you. Medhu vadai was good and crispy. Mysore Masala tasted good but was not crispy as it should be. Staff were courteous Overall a good experience. Will certainly come back.
Two large dosas with excellent sambar and chutney under the Uber offer. Keep up the standards. Thank you for coming over to this side of town. They are situated on Kilpauk garden road and have road facing ambience if you d like to know.
What to say abt a place that hasn't been mentioned yet... It stands true to it's fame of serving the most delectable sambhar in Chennai... Simply loved the sambhar and also the fact that they serve the same unlimited 😂... Had ordered Vada and Puri Subji along with Sambhar... Felt let down by the Vada.. it's overpriced and was too flaky for my liking... The Puri Subji was nice... But the highlight of the menu was sambhar. It is lightly spiced and a fragnance of ghee just adds to it's flavor...
Would recommend this place to everyone who wants to have a good South Indian breakfast... And of course Sambhar is the must try item on the menu...
The best place for a quick South Indian breakfast! And their sambhar doesn’t need any introduction as they are the most famous in town! My favourite dish is sambhar idly and their vadas! Love their sambhar👍🏻
This place doesn't need any introduction at all, for it has been famous for its amazing sambhar for so long🤩❤️
This place not only serves amazing sambhar , but also it serves best south indian breakfast options.
Podi Idly with good amount of ghee was delicious
Idk if it was their sambhar or vada and dosa or that combo elevated the dish so much.Ratna Cafe
Awesome for breakfast. A great advantage is that it opens early umin themorning so can order the breakfast such that it reaches you before heading for work. Would definitely order and visit from Ratna Cafe again.
Triplicane Ratna Cafe is known for its good quality food and sambhar. I tried the new Ratna cafe in kilpauk and it was a good experience. The sambhar idli tasted delightful and the ghee roast Dosa was just crispy and fantastic. The poori was given with masala and kurma which was also very good. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for having a good south Indian food. The only thing is that there could be more variety of cuisines on the menu, otherwise this place is totally good. I rate a 4 on 5 for Ratna Cafe.
Keep up the good work and Kudos to the restaurant.
Being a vegetarian and was tempted for briyani, i had to order for Lucknowi Briyani.
I Dunno how this will taste exactly, but the food filled my stomach well.
Should have been packed in better way as the food were spilled outside the cover when i received the parcel.
Other than that Worth the Money.... :)
The Magic of Sambar Still Continues... They haven't just stopped with the Sambar and Idlies.. Now they r serving more items other than Idlies .... To mention ... One of the best Best Jilebis i have a tasted.. so next time wen u vist here.. try their Jilebis..
The hot idly and jug of sambhar tantalises your taste buds. The hot jelabi is one more to add to your menu ! Keep up the taste and serve good food to customers 😊👍
Ever since Ratna Cafe opened in Kilpauk I wanted to go. I have seen people raving about how good their Sambar-Idly is and because I haven't been to their original Triplicane branch, I wanted to try this one badly.
We went for dinner and the place was filled to the brim. Thankfully we were able to get two seats by the window side overlooking the main road. The restaurant is huge and is over two storeys. Ambience wise it is quite good and neat.
Coming to the food, we had Sambar-Idly, two Medhu vadas and a Rava Dosa. Loved the Sambar. No wonder people rave about it. They are poured in large quantities directly from a pan and hence it was too good. The Medhu vada on the other hand was quite cold and hard. Rava Dosa was exceptional. Ended the meal with one amazing filter coffee
If you are in Kilpauk and looking for a South-Indian place to dine, this is a best bet.
Through Zomotto I ordered parotta and kuruma for the dinner. My earlier orders for lunch could not materialise. I got the parotta with out any delay. Very delicious food.
Ahhhh Ratna cafe,, is still the best no doubts,,, the triplicane famous Ratna cafe maintains the standards of its taste,, this place has got very simple ambience, good service,, gets crowded on the weekends, on the other days u can get a table ...the dishes are all mind-blowing and mouth watering, starting from dosa, Sambar idly to there north Indian thali,, all are must try and just delicious and authentic,,, on a whole must try ...they have got a good car parking space at all,, so no need to worry about that,, just come and enjoy.. Keep it up
Ordered today online since there was a great discount on breakfast . Got the special dosa which had ghee on plain dosa , pongal and idly . Dosa was good and tasty , idly was thin and soft with good taste and the pongal also was good in taste . The Sambar and chutneys provided are out of the world , at least for me . Coming to the packing excellent is not the word . Never seen a breakfast hotel pack Sambar and chutney is well.
This is a very old brand name and hence wanted to give it a shot to rekindle my younger days and surely did not get disappointed. I would recommend this place anytime . Have uploaded some pics to show the Nice was the accomplishments were packed .
Decent family restaurant in the middle of Kilpauk Garden road with a South Indian veg cafe on the 1st floor and a North Indian veg restaurant on the 2nd floor.
Service is swift, moderate ambience and taste is above average. Extremely budget-friendly.

5 Stars for the food. I was here on a Sunday and it was very crowded, the food made up for the slow lumbering service. Had to wait a bit to pay my bill as the card machine was not in the counter
Had the chance to try their Kilpauk branch recently.Very spacious, the ambience is quite good but it is the food that makes the experience awesome. One must try dish is the Sambar Idly-no one makes it like them!
Other food was awesome too..Superb Bajjis, kitchadi and other tiffen items. I dont usually give 5 star ratings but this chain deserves it.Food is slightly pricier but it ultimately worth it.
Very nice food and hotel staff is polite and well mannered.
The ghee Mini Idli is too good along with a big amount of Sambhar. Also, North Indian meal is prepared well. Place is new and decent.

Legendary for their South Indian dishes, since it's debut in Triplicane eons ago. Visited their outlet in Kilpauk twice already, once for late breakfast on a Saturday, and then for an early dinner on a Friday.
Total orders for both our visits were podi dosa, onion rava dosa, chettinad dosa, sambar vadai, mini idli, and curd vadai. I love that they keep the sambar pot at the table, so we can take when needed. Drink orders were filter coffee and rose milk.

Tips - they add ghee to most of their dishes as standard, so if that's not your thing you must mention it beforehand. The place can get crowded the later you go. I would recommend going early any day, to enjoy the full benefit of their food and service! They have good parking space, which is much needed on a busy main road. Valet parking is available too. Definitely add it to your "Must-visit" list for a great veg south indian meal.
I would ideally give 3.5 for this restaurant. If you want to eat authentic south Indian then this is the place. Very good service by the staff and decent ambience. Of course clean and tidy restaurant.
Hot idly is to die for. Sambar and other chutneys provides good taste to your main dish. We also ordered Rava Dosa, Curd Vada, Rasam Vada, Rose Milk and onion uttapam. Curd Vada was just normal, Raman vada the rasam was just average but rava dosa and onion uttapam was good.
Next time wish to try the North Indian dishes. But would suggest to try Idly and dosa items.

Visited this place just for the Sambhar idli and Filter coffee (as known among the chennaites)
This restaurant didn't disappoint. Holds the best sambhar tag till date! Good family dine out restaurant.
Been to this three times a day, all the time I had two Sambar Idly, that explains my liking towards the food. The best thing to try here is Sambar Idly. We did also try other dosas here, nothing comes near to this sambar Idly. Being a sambar lover, this place is a heaven to me!!!!!
Thank you for the speedy delivery. Parota and kuruma were of excellent quality. Very Good. The curd onion raita was superb. Enjoyed it very much.
For a change it was pleasant that a South Indian food joint has mastered the art of making North Indian food and that too was delicious. Special mention to the soup Ab-e-Hayath.. Amazing n something very different n tasty. Coconut Water based with veggies, it was yummy. Starters like Paneer Tikka n Kurkuri Tikki (another Paneer base) were Hot and Tasty. Main course Methi Chaman n Lahsuni Dal were good especially the Methi preparation. Breads were made well. Bit of let down on Lucknowi Dum Biryani, something was basically wrong with the dish. Didn't have the right flavors. Finally, dessert went for Hot Jalebi which was crunchy, yummy n good for tummy 😁. Overall service was decent can be much better. The steward serving are still in the Cafe mentality, needs proper grooming n presentation. Another sour point if items are not available don't put them on menu like Roomali Roti n Rabari..need to rethink again on what to order 😉
With Triplicane Ratna Cafe being so famous and popular, they started expanding and the newly opened branch serves with similar kind of an experience where-in "Sambar is served with Idly"
Went with my family for breakfast and I had a good experience here personally. Ordered plain dosa, Pongal, Sambar Vada and Idly. All were pretty good here. Same old sambar taste was felt. Plus this is air-conditioned so it feels premium. :)
Chutney was not fresh it was smelling sour
the food is not up to the mark of the rate. the hotel may provide festivities, but when we order in online, we won't receive the facilities which hotel provides
On time. Excellent food. I loved it. Thanks zomato and ratna cafe and delivery staff of zomato for delivering with smile
Breakfast with friends was a treat at this spot. The podi idly, dosa, and mini ghee idly were all delicious. Quick service ensured a pleasant morning. A great place for a tasty, hassle-free meal with friends.
Residing close to such a legendary restaurant, have frequented the place in different occasions.
It has seating for about 50 people in an air-conditioned space with elevator access so is old-age friendly. There are about 3-4 tables with street-view and I like these :)
The service is most of the times decently fast and courteous. Payment can be made via upi, card or cash. Reducing a star here because after our last visit for a quick lunch at about 2.30, my wife told me that she overheard the manager guy (or whoever was with a white shirt shouting at the staff) commenting like “eating for 200rs and staying inside for the AC”. She heard it but didn’t see him pointing to us- and to this element of doubt, the four stars still remain. It was hot outside, agreed, we came in about 2:30, billed out at 2:52, had sambar rice, tamarind rice and a masala pappad, and irrespective of anything, such a comment, if it were for us, and would have been told to my face, it would have created a deep ignorance and hatred for the guy/restaurant. But having employees with that thought process is anyway disastrous from my perspective.
Will update the review of each of the dishes in the review, or post a photo update, but for this review will cover the below items.
- Sambar rice- my go to lunch from here. Tasty and economical for a quick lunch outing.
- Tamarind rice- the hit of tamarind was good. Fresh and tasty.
- Roasted masala pappad- avoid. Had a bit of un roasted portions and isn’t a greatly built dish. Note: the roasted masala pappad in the menu is 50rs, but their billing system had a fault as of 16th May 2023 that it was billing it at Rs.65.
- Dahi poori- good. Not the creamiest curd, but still tasty.
- Phulka and paneer butter masala combo- expensive for the portion size. But was tasty.
- Podi idli- not good- avoidable. This is clearly not what they are good at.
- Ras-malai- yummy :)
- Chappathi set- good set of side dishes, good for a light dinner.
- Paneer tikka- nice succulent paneer, decent masala and well done.
- Bhatoora- was good. The channa was a bit too spicy (not hotness, but amount of masala)
- Mini tiffin- a killer deal between 7-9 in the weekdays morning. Impossible value for one’s hard earned money.
To conclude- a well maintained restaurant with comfortable interior and decent amount of covered parking which has expensive as well as economic options for one to go and explore, most of which are tasty and worth a try.
Waaoo what a coffee.. Loved their coffee. Samabar idly is a must try. Idly is flooded with sambar. Ordered podi ghee dosa, dosa was a bit over cooked. Must say about their service, Mr Sunil Kumar.. he was like Eveready, you order and food will be on the table👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Good food, prime location and large glass pane windows with good view.
Delightful South Indian cuisine.
First timer at this legacy outlet, Ratna Cafe Kilpauk.
A simple no nonsense sitting- seating for 4 and 6 mostly.
Very busy stewards.
We ordered idly sambar, ghee masala dosa, Andhra Kara Dosa and Paratha Korma.
Sambar by itself is awesome. Each and every dish cooked with love.
One must visit to this outlet when in Chennai
Although the food is decent here. It would be great if there was a better system to manage the staff. Perhaps the staff could also be demotivated. And this has a direct link to the service and atmosphere.
But the food is quite nice.

Good for tiffin items, we are the iconic sambar idly which is one of a kind and delicious but the entrance can be a bit well maintained it is highly recommended if you are opting for vegetarian and family friendly. Next we ate the dosa varities and the ghee masal dosa is a must try as it was full of ghee and the masala was really subtle and flavourful and the coffee was just perfection. Overall a good restaurant and highly recommended if you go anywhere near the area
Had heard a lot about Ratna Cafe in France from a Tamilian friend and I finally got to try their delicacy in Chennai.
I had a Ghee Roast Masala Dosai, Onion Rawa Dosai, Idli Sambhar and hot filter coffee.
The Quality of the food and Service is Excellent . Loved the Limited meals and all the side dishes given with the meals was subtle and delicious . The vatta kolambu, Avial , keerai Kolambu , sambar , Rasam and Mooru and thick curd all were very good and the desert Parappu payasam which is my all time favourite came with this delicious and sumptuous meal. My kids enjoyed the Butter Naan and Paneer Butter Masala. The parking facility is very good and the Service was very Pleasant and cordial.
Such a nice place for breakfast. Ratna Cafe maintaining its legend name. Here what amused me is the cutlery choice. And hot sambar in a Pan is vera level. And it's fully Air conditioned & obviously the price is little high.
Best sambar idly !
No competition.
A must try if you are in Chennai city.
Standard quality south Indian food available. We went for breakfast and it was a bit crowded on a Sunday. Their trademark sambar idly was excellent as usual. We tried pongal vadai & coffee as well. Ghee pongal was good enough and authentic. Coffee could have been better. Not the best coffee in town. Food rates are a bit expensive.
Pongal was average, idly sambar was good but not steaming hot . Coffee again average.. good parking. Below average ambience.
It’s a very spacious vegetarian restaurant with valet parking,
Price is nominal for the ambience provided,Taste was average Medhu vada and Coconut chutney was too good.
Limited items of Sweet are also sold.
Debit Card and Credit Card payment is accepted
