Being an anime freak, I was stunned with the decor. I tried 3 types of sushi and all of them were great! Oh and BTW, had Japanese cuisine for the first time. Learning how to use chopsticks was super fun :) Hope to visit this place again soon.
First ever sushi.... Liked it.... Theme was ultimately awesome.... #naruto #dragonballz #onepiece....
Tried pretty much all that is on the menu - fantastic. "If in madras your ship docks- sushi ... In a box." (I'm not charging for that horrendous catchphrase)
tried the kampachi sashimi and the salmon sashimi the quality of the fish was sooo goooood and fresh !!! and the way they deliver with the ice and all, they're really living upto their tagline "restaurant quality food out of a box". would highly recommend this place.
Great thought. Lovely food . worth each penny. .A new taste for our dead taste buds.
Ordered 3 veg Maki. They were just AMAZING. You'll def be hearing from us very often. Something chennai def needed. Keep up the quality guys. Ps. You def need to increase the portion of Gari....
Hey!!! I personally am not a big fan of Sushi's.... But i guess now thanks to Sushi in a box... Am gonna be the biggest fan!!! Thanks a lot!!! It was super Delicious!!!
Ordered a prawn fry maki and a tofu maki....they were amazing!!! definitely going to order more! you guys should think about opening one in bangalore
Very good Hygiene and cleanliness. Yummy maki rolls with decent portion size. Delighted to visit it again soon.

Some places are not just about the food or price, it’s about the experience it gives you,
@sushiinabox ,a Japanese restaurant serves some distinctive and tremendous foods that’s prepared with freshest seafood and meat
It had such a welcoming atmosphere and great seating , loved the presentation of every dish . Service was top notch and they explained everything in detail patiently
1)Salmon sashimi - Atlantic salmon , it goes down your throat just like a watermelon . This one’s a must try
2)Alaskan Salmon roll maki - cucumber , avocado, tamgo, crab stick topped with salmon and teriyaki sauce
3)Yakiniku- Grilled beef sizzler , loved this one , very soft and sticky 🥢
4)Spicy ramen seafood - seafood with broth . It had literally everything from the sea incl octopus
5)Omraisu - tossed fried rice wrapped inside an omelette , Just in case you need some rice 🍚
If you’ve got some foreigner come to Chennai and they want to have Japanese food , then this is the place to take them , also for anyone that wants to try authentic Japanese food
It is a pricey with each dish costing you 500-600₹ but you’d go home with the satisfaction of trying something new and its definitely worth the money :) Don’t miss it
Great sushi platter. Really flavorful and one of a kind in Chennai.
Good beef, properly seasoned.
As far as veg is concerned, their tofu soup was good.
Ramen noodles were a classic, so was their sticky rice.
Their seafood soup is awash with....seafood. Prawns, fish, octopi, the whole assortment.
Must visit if you like Japanese cuisine.
Loved the manga walled ambience and salmon sushi. Japanese food palate is an acquired Tatar’s so you like it if you like it — no point in writing to convince you. Mastered the chopsticks on the sides :-) Expensive but will go again soon.
Tried sushi and ramen for the first time. It was exquisite and delicious. The price is a bit costly but it's worth it. Don't leave the ramen broth at the end.
We went it fairly late for lunch around 3:30 pm on a Sunday. It was almost empty which was pleasing to us. The staff was courteous and the menu offered a wide variety of Japanese cuisine. I loved the ambience, they had two areas with one area with floor seating and other with tables and it was bright, minimalistic, neat and well kept.
We ordered prawn tempura roll and prawn furai rolls and Chicken Katsu Don. Both prawn furai rolls and Prawn tempura were good but almost similar though. The miso soup was light and pleasing. The Chicken Katsu was average though, it could be better. Will like to visit it again when I am in Chennai again.
You want amazing fresh sushi but cheap, blindly head over to sushi in a box. No disappointments for sure. The meat used is fresh and the other ingredients too, gives an almost authentic taste.
Okay i am in love with sushi now. I had a sushi expertise with me. So he helped me with the order. We ordered salmon teriyaki, spicy tuna maki, slamon nigiri and prawn tempura rolls. I loved the salmon and more than everything i loved the kimchi salad. Would definitely tey sushi again. Rate this 4/5. Also could you please tell me in comments there's a branch in Delhi NCR.?
This place is a dream for all the sushi lovers. Ive been here quite lot of times, and the food is too good and the quality of the sushi is commendable. My all time favourite is the prawn tempura sushi and the chicken katsu rice. Will definitely recommend this restaurant to all the sushi lovers.
Good ambience. Great place for oriental cuisine. Especially the sushi is just amazing. I never thought I would like sushi but thanks to this place I'm in love with sushi. They also have vegetarian options so even the vegetarian people can enjoy oriental cuisine. Would love visit this place every weekend haha!
Small place with comforting Japanese food. Expensive but worth it with the portion sizes. The ambience is alright and the packaging of the food whenever I order is also great.
Amazing amazing experience! The Kimchi at the beginning was so flavour-rich. The nigiri platter was perfect for sharing between two people and we ordered the spicy seafood soup to share (1/2). Perfect balance of spice. The veg was cooked well. The fish was flakey and carried a lot of punch. The pickled radish that was given was a welcome respite from the heat of the soup and the Kimchi.
10/10 would recommend.

Must have salmon sashimi 😍
This was my first time having sushi. And the flavour is authentic and not for ppl who are not into sea fish essence. I loved salmon and prawn but avoided sea weed as it gave a strong flavour of sea fish.
Staff is patient and friendly and kimchi is very tasty
I've never had authentic Japanese food so I can't comment on this placed authenticity, but in terms of taste, ambiance, service, price it is good. The have a pretty big menu and the staff helps you out in selecting your dishes as per your palate. It seems like a good starting place to introduce yourself to the cuisine. Their kimchi salad was spicy unlike the kind you get at more places where it seems more suited to the Indian palate.
1. Seafood soup: With a healthy helping of shrimp, scallops and fish, this soup is pretty heavy. The flavours are not overbearing and are just perfect.
2. Oyako Don: Recommended by the staff after listening to my preferences, this dish hit the spot with its flavours. Though it's on the sweeter side, the taste is just perfect. Ramen dish with chicken egg and lots of broth

With a love for Japanese cuisine, I landed here. Exquisite food, friendly staff, pretty ambience (Anime lovers would love it!). That should some it up.
Must try Ebi tempura maki roll and Miso soup.
It was a birthday treat and boy! It was a blast here. Going to a restaurant with a family that has both non vegetarians and strict vegetarians is tricky but this place was amazing. It had interesting veg options as well.
We ordered a tofu starter, salmon makizushi rolls, chicken gyouza. My daughter loved the gyouzas and we ordered the tofu and makizushi roll again. They were that good. My parents didn't opt for any starters and went on with their main course - veg ramen. It was different from other ramen...more like noodles and curry on the side. Anyway, it tasted great and came with a lot of veggies. We ordered hamburger steak and a chicken rice dish. Both were on the sweeter side but were nice nonetheless.
And did I mention how generous they were with their jasmine tea! 😅 they usually are anyway but it complemented the food.
Would definitely recommend and visit again for sure. Especially for the makizushi rolls and jasmine tea. And the tofu too.
Oh I absolutely adore their Bento box and indeed they are one of the finest best in the city. The food is absolutely delicious.
Decent service and they could do better with a little more politeness - but if you want good food - this is a mustttt try!!
It’s very unfortunate that I couldn’t dine at the restaurant. We had to order for a take away. But the sushi was so yum. We ordered the salmon sushi and the udon and the deep fried prawn. All three were delicious. The udon was a light and refreshing, the sushi was good too, the seafood was fresh. The deep fried prawn was also crispy and the dipping sauce went with everything. Next time I’d definitely
Want to dine at the restaurant
I went to this place to celebrate my husband's birthday. The place has a unique feature that you can sit on floor as well around the eating table which is genuinely appreciable.
We ordered squid, salmon tuna prawn nigiri etc. The food is awesome and very much satisfying. You will find many Japanese people there as it is a Japanese restaurant.
A must try.
I definitely don't know what to say! Just felt like travelling in heaven after having couple of dishes over here! It is the best restaurant for sushi and no words to describe about the soy sauce it was just so finger licking good 😁🍣
Bessst sushi in town hands down. Love their oyaku don bowl varities also. Been here a million times and still will always crave for more. Props to the super creative anime based interior.😁🤘🏼❤
This place is one of my favorites, in Chennai. They have the best sushi, believe me. I tried sushi in few other restaurants of much calibre, but 'sushi in a box's quality is best. The staff people are also very polite and friendly. Food is worth the money. Highly recommended. I ordered prawn tempura roll and chicken katsudon. The portions were also really nice.
Went with the family on a mid week for dinner, so it was almost empty so no waiting issues, pretty decent ambience as well.
Tried sushi for the first time and absolutely loved it, both the veg and non veg sushis were good, Loved the spicy soup as well....
Only concern ,communicating with the waiters was a task by itself, either I've to learn Japanese or they have to learn more English before our next visit,😜
Word of caution: Just watch out for the wasabi in the sushi.
I love their food! A very good option if you’re in mood for some Japanese that suits indian taste. I tried the veg ramen, my personal favourite, the veg California maki was delicious! The shiitake mushroom roll was a burst of flavours. The okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) was very good as well. I keep revisiting with friends to make them taste the ramen :)
Good food and excellent service. Must try their sushi. Courteous and friendlly staff. I definitely recommend my friends and colleagues. We will visit again
For a while now I've wanted to try Japanese food but never got the opportunity. Since this place is just around the corner, we landed here today for an impromptu lunch.
Ambience - A must visit diner for all the anime lovers!! Especially if you're a Naruto, DBZ or a one piece fan ;)
Food- My fiancee Hariharan isn't that crazy or experimenting as I am about Asian cuisine. So we safely went for the spicy veg ramen and weren't disappointed at all. We enjoyed the meal while munching on some pickled cabbages and raddishes on the side.
Service - the staff were very polite and were promptly refilling our glasses with hot water (not exactly sure what drink it was though).
Definitely going back here to try more. Lots of love!!
I was pleasantly surprised with Salmon Maki for lunch today ! I was just literally sitting there craving sushi when all of a sudden the doorbell rang and I saw sushi!! 💃🏻.. The brother ordered and sent me some ❤️. Again, it was delivered by Swiggy (up your game, Zomato Order!)
The packaging was perfect. It was packaged well (leak proof) with the sushi in the main container, sealed tightly and two smaller condiment containers (one for wasabi and the pickled ginger and the other for soya sauce), sealed tightly, separately, inside the main box.
There were eight gorgeous looking maki rolls and OMG they were scrumptiously delicious !! I had four and was stuffed — saving the other four for a snack, probably in and around any moment now lol. 😉
Packaging 5/5
Taste 5/5
Surprise 10/5
Craving sushi? Order some in or just go check out Sushi in a Box !
(I ate two before I thought of taking a picture for the brother lol 😋)
Came to this place only to try sushi for the first time.
First of all, the ambience is just so relaxing and the staff were so nice and polite, they did take time to listen to what we really wanted to have.
They recommended my first sushi should be the Alaskan Salmon roll maki and boy were they so right ! I LOVED it ! I honestly thought I could never like the taste of raw fish or those typical assumptions we think about before we actually try something new, this was so amazingly tasty and I definitely can not wait to visit for some more 🍣
I’ve been wanting to get my hands on authentic vegetarian sushi for long! Glad I landed to this place. This place has been open since couple of years, but I somehow never stumbled upon it.
Ambience is good, I specially liked their floor seating.
Staff was courteous and suggested avocado sushi and vegetarian ramen. Sushi was real good and ramen with their in house cooked noodles was delicious as well. Jasmine tea served on side was a perfect match with the food!
Recommend this place to everyone and definitely visiting it again!
The place was typical authentic Japanese restaurant. And to be honest this was my first time trying any Japanese cuisine or sushi.
Literally the first experience to hold even the chopsticks xD. Just a sushi Virgin. Had a tough time to get to know to use chopsticks. But finally managed :p And this my first experience was good.
We just ordered veg California roll and it tasted good. We didn't order much I was afraid I wouldn't like it. May be next will try something different.
Visited this place today afternoon for lunch and main reason was to try out some authentic Japanese food and was not disappointed.
Veg Starter - Cheezu Age (Cheese Sticks) and Non-Veg Starter Tempura Mori (Prawns & Vegetables Tempura Fried) Both tasted really good and good quantity as well. 2 starters would be good enough for 3 people. We found 2 starters for 2 people to be quite some quantity.
Main Course : Hoso Maki (Veg) and Salmon Maki (Non-Veg). Both the Sushi main course had 8 pieces each and tasted really good... The quantity of a main course was sufficient for one person.
Overall the food was satisfactory and given the pricing was a little on the higher side, the taste, presentation, decor, ambience, service and authenticity of Japanese Food compensates it. Definitely worth a visit to this place.
One of the most authentic Japanese restaurants I have been to in chennai. And by "authentic" I mean they is limited proper Japanese seating and also proper Japanese food, not wannabe type.
And I gave one star less with the soul reason I don't like that Japanese tea because I am not a fan of it so that spoilt my taste.
This place has an Awesome ambience. Ground Floor belongs to a different restaurant. First floor is this place. The scenaries are superb af. The sushi and combo we ordered came with a soup and starter then came the main course which tasted really bad according to our taste buds. The soup was really good but not the raw meat. Vishal Austin
Wish the quantity was more though.
Good and average sushi 🍣 😊 we actually ordered a table in absolute Thai so these ppl got it down nd it was good too ! What we ordered was salmon one and there are many other good sushi’s too to try on ! Will definitely come back for more !
Visited sushi in a box, cenatoph road.
It was my friend’s birthday and he and I and one other are all big fan of Japanese cuisine so wandered into this place.
Ambience: The interiors is themed to be of naruto and dragon ball z, Japanese anime. Calm and quiet place, you have two seating, on the floor or on the table, we took the floor.
The place was brightly lit and quiet and the staff were really courteous.
Menu: The menu wasn’t strictly Japanese they had sizzlers and others. They had some good combos as well if you wanna try a mixed meal.
Our orders:
Alaskan salmon roll: So far I’ve had this dish in Mamagoto and in Asian station and this place wins the three.
The taste was super good, the salmon was smoked a bit and it went really good with the wasabi and soy sauce.
Prawn Tempura: I’ve had this in Mamagoto earlier and theirs had tasted better compared to this, the rolls were dominated by the fried tempura and no other flavour or taste in it.
Tendon rice bowl: Basically a sticky rice bowl topped with prawn tempura and lot of fried batter fritters.
Caution: Do not order this! The prawn was nice and big and tasted good with the fried batter but the rice at the bottom lacked any flavours or taste to it and it was totally bland.
Omuraisu chicken bowl: This is something quite new and tasted really good.
The egg was stuffed with sticky rice and chicken with seaweed.
Chicken katsu: Sticky rice bowl topped with fried chicken and eggs and topped with seaweed, this rice bowl had some good flavour and taste mostly because the rice went well with the pieces of chicken and egg unlike the tendon rice bowl.
All the three rice bowl were accompanied with a small bowl of broth of scallions, tofu and spring onion. The broth was really good and the tofu omg, it would just melt in your mouth.
We paid overall 2788₹ and though one dish was a total disappointment, I’d say it’s worth visiting, I will be visiting again to try their sushi 🍣.
Ambience: 4/5

we were a group of 4.Ambience was good.small neat and clean place.
✴CALIFORNIA ROLL and SALMON MAKI was good but not the best sushi I have had.
✴YAKI GYOZA had the right amount of filling and the dough was light.we liked it so much we ordered 2 portions of it.
✴CHICKEN KATSU CURRY was average in my opinion.
✴Crispy fried prawns and chicken were good.
✴Yakiniku which is the beef sizzler was okay.
The service was very average.Overall I wasn't like impressed nor disappointed.
The place is quite minimalistic in terms of its decor. The best part was the wall art which was Japanese Anime charactors. Loved the wall art through and through!
The sitting arrangement is also nice. You have normal chais and tables and a seperate area of low floor sitting. I chose the latter one.
For food, I took Ebi Tempura Nigiri, Salmon Gunkan and California Roll.
The Nigiri was ok-ok... The tempura could have been a little more rich in taste and juicy...the Gunkan was a different dish altogether for me... Raw cut salmon over a rolled rice... It was nice and different... Although the raw salmon didn't have a specific taste as such.
California roll was also ok-ok. Again the richness in terms of taste was a little miss.
They serve hot tea with the food which was good.
The experience was good, not a great one though.
Good for a one time experience.
Sushi in a box always is right!
To be frank, this is not my cup of tea. However, it was a good experience trying the Japanese food. I tried 3/4 soups available in the menu and all of them were good. Then we ordered 5 different food items could not recollect the name. The fried prawn and the bowl of noodles with soup was my favourite. They keep serving tea instead of water. I tried sushi and salmon while they tasted authentic they did not have much flavours in it. Over all it was a good experience, must try at least to say I have had Japanese food😁
Love love love the sushis here...! Anyone craving for sushis and varieties in it should definetly try out this place..!! Also the japanese dumplings were amazing... also tried the spicy ramen and i must say it was jus yum.. visited this place on new year’s and what a good start to the year! Cheers!
#searchingbestrameen
Me and my friend check in thr to taste ramen dish, taste yet to improve, compliment jasmine tea was so good
Nice ambience good staffs.
So wanted to be here since a long time and finally we make it.. the place is just above Absolute thai.. Very small place with a small sitting area.. they have a traditional japanese style sitting area too.. The ambience feels good and though it serves so much of seafood you wont get that stale atink of seafood that you usually get in a seafood restaurant.
Coming to food so selecting from the menu was a tough task as the japanese terms were so dofficult to understand.. we were going by the picture and ordering things.. we went for a veg Sushi, Assorted Sashimi and Ramen Noodles..
Vegetarians You would not have a good time here not for the food taste but for the less varieties they offer..
Sashimi that I ordered was really nice, tender meat of chicken, tuna, prawns,, crab stick, salmon and salmo eggs with a soup water and sticky rice.. Had one of the best sashimi though.. The server made me a sizzling salmon which was another awesome dish.. the seafood are fresh which you could feel it as soon as you put it in your mouth..
All in all a must try place for Sushi, Sashimi, Nigiri lovers.
They dont have Desserts though..

Best Japanese food ever. This place is highly recommended. A must to go place. The sushi is extremely mouth savouring and delicious, the calamari is to die for, the jasmine tea feels very soothing for your mind, body and soul especially if you go to the restaurant post work or post clinics(like I did). The soup was good but I felt the rest of the dishes topped it off comparatively. I would definitely love to come here again.
At last we found our place in chennai that serves right sushi and shasmi . The portiion size at sushi is good and the food taste really good .There are 2 types of seating available normal and japanese style with low tables .We opted for low ones we were glad we made the right choice .The service is extremely courteous and food is tasty especially the shasmi was very fresh
Surely recommend sushi in a box to anyone who wants to try japanese cuisine
I had the Chicago sushi roll. Well what can I say, it was all fresh and very tasty indeed. My only regret is that I can't eat sushi more often due to the price.

Thought of trying Sushi, tempted by mouthwatering pics posted in Zomato headed to this restaurant. But had to return back disappointed. I would never recommend Japanese food to a Indian friend who loves spices. Never will I try japanese cuisines ever in my life again. But the restaurant and service was good.
Ambience - 5/5.
Japanese food - No Never
Best place in Chennai to satisfy your sushi cravings... authentic ambience coupled with great food. We came here for lunch and we surprised by the elaborate menu, we tried the prawn tempura roll, the gyoza and a seafood soup, all of which were delicious and the portion sizes were extremely generous, which didn't give us a chance to try the mains, but will definitely be back here soon. Last but not the least amazing value for money and great staff...
Best sushi place !! With the best service !! Great quality and authenticity. I have come here a lot of times and never been disappointed.
Spicy seafood ramen
California roll
Prawn tempura roll
Squid fry
Spicy salmon roll
To all the vegetarian sushi fans out there, this place offers quite a few options. I would want you guys to try two things for sure.
1.Sweet potato roll
2. Yasai tempura roll.
The first one has fried sweet potato as a topping which makes the sushi taste very delicious.
The second one has fried vegetables as a topping which gives the sushi a beautiful combination of both sweetness and crunchiness making it taste just perfect.
The ambience and the service is quite decent too.
The food was amazing, though a bit pricy. The service quality of the host Mr. Sunil Murmu was excellent and made sure that I had a wonderful experience. The prawn tempura roll was great too.
Would definitely recommend.
After spending the most amount of time on my wish-list, Sushi in a Box finally managed to be the location of a farewell meal.
Shrimp / Crab Sushi and Ramen are two Jap dishes that I'm extremely comfortable with - or rather, I've acquired the taste for it over the years. Also, here was the time that I was introducing all of this to two other friends of mine. So, we tried to go slow on the over-dose of Jap food.
The Kimchi and Pickled raddish that is served complimentary works great, as well.
Location : Cannot ask for a better location - right above Absolute Thai in the middle of Teynampet, along with parking within the premises, Sushi in a Box wins on the placement count.
We were seated on low tables where we sat on the floor (and innovation points for allowing leg space if people were not comfortable sitting cross legged).
What we ordered :
- Chicken Gyoza : Five dimsums that were perfect on all counts. Exactly how it is in other Pan Asian restaurants.
- Chicken Wings : Unfortunately, the worst of the buys. Did not like the marinated flavour one bit.
- Ebiko Roll : 10 pieces of sushi with a prawn tempura and crab stick filling. Must say that this was a great buy.
- Garlic Rice : the chicken variant - safest bet if one person in the gang is not too comfortable with the soy / teriyakki based main course options.
- Chicken Katsu curry : extremely large portion. And I found an overdose of meat there - however, it makes a good dish.
- Seafood Yaki Udon : Loved my version of it with the shrimp, squid and octopus. Extremely tender meat and a nicely done wheat noodles.
Cost : INR 1000 per person - but, ofcourse, we had ordered a lot for three people.
Service : impressive on this count as well.
Bottomline : The best of the Jap places I have been to in recent times at Chennai. Certainly a good place for just Sushi and Ramen.
This is my first experience in Japanese style food . I felt more comfortable. Overall it's delicious and good experience..
I loved it so so much ...
Love the food....super great.....just love love love😎😎😎😎.....its the first time i eat food happily after i reach chennai (7 months) you deserve 10 *
A long pending visit to this place turned out to be a fulfilling one. My wife, brother in law and myself are Japanese food lovers (esp. sushi) and we were in for a treat. Lets break this review in four parts:
1) Ambience: By the look of it, this is not a fine dining place. Its in fact a chic Japanese resto, with wallpapers depicting Japanese comic book characters (DragonballZ I think). The color theme is a red-whte combo and the place itself is very neat and clean (hard to achieve given the amount oh white space there). The chairs are plastic ones which is a bit of a shame. A little bit of cushioning would help. They do have a typical Japanese style sit-on-the-ground type table but a table seats only three. Shame, we were four of us.
2) Service: Service is quick. The young staff is courteous and quick to respond. I did feel that there was no experienced waiting staff (such as an experienced manager or something). Not that it affected anything, but it may be of help in general.
3) Food: Their menu is quite expansive, and for someone not aware of Japanese cuisine will be lost (not withstanding the pictures and description in english) Heck, I have a fair knowledge of Japanese food and I was confused. It may be a good idea to look at the menu before reaching the restaurant and deciding upon what to eat. Essentially, there's Sushi, Rice Bowls, Ramen, BBQ Meat, and Curry (I may have missed a few items.). For our dinner, we ordered 3 rounds of Sushi, a plate of prawn tempura (japanese bajji :D) a bowl of Miso Ramen, Omu-rice (Fried rice covered in omelette), Chicken Katsu Curry (plain rice, fried chicken and chicken&veg curry) and iced teas. Everything tasted great. I felt the sushi could have been a bit better, but it was great for the price being charged. No complains. The presentation was great and portions were sufficient to share. Tempura was brilliant. Light and crispy. The Ramen was great too. Very creamy and fresh. It lacked a soft-boiled egg though. Big miss!
I also enjoyed the chicken katsu curry, although the curry was a bit too salty. I think they use chicken stock cube and added a bit too much (my guess. could be wrong). The chicken and vegetables in the curry were well cooked and the gravy browning and the spice level was perfect. The fried chicken was great too. Others in my group enjoyed the Omu-rice. The portions in main course items are large, so dont pig out on the starters.
Price: The prices are medium-high (if there ever was a description like that). Overall, our bill came to ~4200 among 4 of us, that translates to ~1000 per head.
All in all, we had a great time and were so stuffed that we had to skip breakfast the next day. This is a great alternative to other Japanese restaurants such as Teppan and Fuji. I'd go here again, maybe once a month/two-months. Those looking at more affordable options can look at Go-Go Ramen (limited menu, mainly Ramen), Aki-bay.
Food was good, staff were friendly and ambience was nice and peaceful. I had the kappa maki and burnt garlic fried rice - both were quite good. It's great to see more Japanese places popping up - it's one of my favourite cuisines.
I really missed the type of authentic food they make in singapore and when i ate ramen here it just took me back there it was that good would recommend it to people who really want to taste the real deal
One of the best dinners I've had recently. I'm a big fan of Japanese cuisine and so this review might be biased. I love the decor and ambience of the place . The food itself was delicious and I enjoyed every bite. Id love to visit again and explore other items on the menu. A must visit for any foodie.
Very special place because of the authentic decor & Oriental setting ! Very cosy seating area & menu is like really long - it's better to check up with the Servers about the variety of delicacies offered so that you choose right ! It was my 1st Sushi - taste was not great ! I would give full marks to the Ambience
Ordered a salmon nigiri and the salmon maki. The nigiri was excellent - rice was flavourful and the salmon just melted in the mouth without any aftertaste. The maki was good, if a bit unimaginative. Ratio of fish to rice was perfect, as compared to a few other places I know of that get them all wrong. Ambience is good with a lot of anime references around the restaurant. Service was quick and efficient (it wasn't really crowded being late afternoon on a weekday). I didn't experiment too much and went with an all-salmon lineup. Will definitely be back next time for more.

If you want to explore a different kind of cuisine, you can definitely go there.
Since it is a Japanese themed restaurant, everything will be in Japanese style ( Ambience, food, service ). For example, if you order seafood ramen noodles, they'll cook fish, prawn and squid in the water with ramen and masala and they'll serve..
Every food will have a glimpse of Japan in it. Kimchi (Reddish pickle) and Jasmine tea are must try ones..
Pricing is rather high, but with that wonderful ambience, this is okay. But, not everyone will like this cuisine. If you are a Japanese cuisine lover, you'll definitely like it to the core..
Overall, a different and brilliant experience!
Japanese restaurants are far and few between in the city. Sushi in a Box is conveniently located on TTK Road, the Food Street of Chennai.
I went when I was pregnant and craving sushi. I had tried their sushi in a box when they used to sell it at Amma Naana and was excited to know they had opened a restaurant. As a person who grew up in Hong Kong and Japan, I've tried a lot of Japanese, and have to say the food here at Sushi in a Box is par excellence!
You don't have to love manga or anime to appreciate the trendy vibes of this sushi place. The seafood was fresh, and I was so happy to see that they had tobikko and real gaari (ginger). It really is the little things.
Service is excellent and speedy, and the food is so worth it. Give it a try, itadakimasu!
We had at this restaurant and we rate this very good. It was the first encounter with Japanese cuisine and if this is genuine Japanese food then we like it. The sushi and the pan fried dumplings were well appreciated by all. We recommend this place
I have always hated the thought of sushi, raw fish in rice not really how I want to eat my meal. Had gone here on my friends insistence, and man was I surprised. The prawn tempura roll still lingers in my mouth, it was that yum. The beef sizzler YAKINIKU and Chicken katsu don were mind blowing, the flavour , the spiciness, all the components just make your tastebuds sing. The hamburger steak was a little meh. Have been there twice since, and I am very happy in my tummy every time. Clearly a tad bit expensive but worth spending for food this good.
The ambience is lovely with proper lighting. The service was amazing. We were given complimentary hot green tea throughout our meal which was refreshing. Being a vegetarian, I found some discent varieties for veg dishes. Their veg sushis are really tasty. I had a bowl of spicy ramen. Though the ramen was tasty, a nice presentation would have made it better. It was not properly presented as I expected. Other than that, everything else is simply awesome. Try to get seats at the manga room where you can have some authentic Japanese style seating.
Low rating for a very simple reason.
Loved the food but probably ordering for the third time and always items not available on the menu.
Why have such an extensive menu when items not available
First was given a call by Swiggy that one item was unavailable so changed the order.
Then the delivery guy calls from the restaurant saying one more item unavailable. Again a change.
Need to work this out
As a big fan of Sushi. This place was okay. I wish it was better. It felt like forever for the food to come out, but I guess it happens. As for the price, it was expensive as are all the Sushi places. At the price you pay for Sushi I would've expected way better Sushi. Although the place was quite nice and the staff were very polite. I wish the Sushi was better.
Ambience: Good
Service: Very good
Menu: Authentic and varied enough
Food: Delicious
Pricing: Fair
Overall experience: Awesome
Experience: Its right above this thai restaurant that i really enjoy. You have a choice of traditional Japanese style seating or a regular dinner table. The walls are whitewashed with paintings of Samurais all over.....very Japanese comics style. We were given 2 complimentary accompaniments, namely a sweet radish Salad and a spicy Kimchi. Both were lovely. We started off with some Ebi Tempura Maki rolls which were delicious. A single portion came with 8 pieces dredged in tempura crisps. Then we tried some Flyingfish roe Gunkan. I've never tried gunkan before and i loved this style of sushi. 2 pieces on a plate is what i got. The plating and garnish was just so awesome. And flying fish roe is so damn tasty. We got some deep fried boneless fish which was perfectly fried in batter served with cabbage salad, a sweet chilli dip and a green chilli dip. It was delicious...every bit including the accompaniments. We also ordered a portion of Ika Nigiri, which is actually cuttle fish Nigiri. Morsels of rice topped with a generous portion of cuttle fish tied vertically with nori. I loved this dish. 2 pieces again....wish there were more on the platter though. For main course, we chose to try their Chicken Yasai Itame which was a real downer. It was just some boneless leg bits stir fried with good Asian veggies and sprouts. It really was a simple stir fry with nothing else but salt I'm guessing. Maybe it's just the way authentic Japanese main course is....I don't know. But, it was too simple a dish to admire. We also ordered some Chicken garlic fried rice which was very good and made with the sticky rice variety of rice. It was served with some clear soup, which was just a broth with some tofu amd seaweed. It was fine, nothing extraordinary though. You will have to go to the cafe downstairs to their café for dessert cos they don't have a menu for it. Overall, I'm a sucker for authentic Japanese sushi and of course who can resist a crispy tempura. I've never been disappointed. But i don't really enjoy Japanese soups, ramens, or even their grills at times. I loved the sushis here especially their Gunkan. I highly recommend their Flying fish roe Gunkan and the Ika Nigiri.
Cravings for some sushi, got me here!
Ordered two plates of Sushi (8 pieces each)
The Alaskan salmon roll maki and the Chicken roll maki get a 10/10 from me! Satisfied every bit of my craving.
Had also ordered a chicken Katsu don for the mains. The deep fried chicken with egg was good with the sticky rice, I found the sauce to be a little bland (maybe that's how it is supposed to be).
Not a very pocket friendly place, but definitely worth the craving. Service was quick and efficient. Very courteous staff, one of our sushis got delayed and we had to leave to work, they packed it up for us and the "sorry" on top of the box, made up for the wait!! Completely happy with the neat and innovative packaging too. :)
Definitely will visit again.
Oh, and they have these really cute park bench kind of seaters inside. :p
The best place for authentic Japanese food in the city. Tried the avocado salad and chicken roll makki. The portions were also quite large, so we had to pack the Ramen (which was also delicious!) and the service was superb :)
My most favourite restaurant in chennai! I love sushi and I love all other Japanese food.. and this restaurant takes the cake ! The food the ambience the anime posters just are soooo amazing! I wish they deliver though some how it's not near my place but again just a wish... looking forward to my tenth visit here soon!
After a long time
A sushi place in chennai which serves good sushi
I had the California roll with ponzu
It was delicious
The chicken katsu was amazing
The service was amazing and very informative and clear of what they were serving their customers
The veg options are not that wide but commendable
The jasmine tea was soothing
I loved the experience
As someone who has once visited 3 times in a single week, I urge you to hesitate no further and run - I repeat do not walk - to Sushi in a Box. They make sushi available to the masses.
I can vouch that this is the real deal. Fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented makis, salads, soups, sashimi. My top picks are the - una don, california roll, chukawakame salad, chicken gyoza, and tuna rolls. The complimentary side dishes kimchi and radish kimchi are amazing, but don't fill yourself up.
For an awesome experience sit at the elevated seating area. The ambient lighting and Naruto wallpaper are cool! All the staff are wonderful. A special thanks to Mr. Pradeep for making every visit a wonderful experience.
The only Japanese restaurant I have seen where one gets to dine with the people of Japan. If you can't go to Japan go here.. and make sure you ask for a fork if you can't handle chopsticks.. nobody judges you here 😀
Great Japanese food. Probably one of the best sushi places in Chennai and definitely worth a second visit. A little pricey but worth the money. Ordered a plate of salmon sushi for myself and my skeptical non-Japanese-food-enthusiast-vegetarian friend ordered vegetarian thick ramen. Both of us loved our food!
Food & Flavour: 4/5
Ambience: 4/5
Service:4/5
Seating:3/5
Value for Money: 3.5/5
It's been a while since I've been wanting to get here.. I did not regret my decision to have visited tonight! Let's get started! Before I could capture a few of the dishes I forgot I was going to review and went all-in! Manage to remember and click a few pics of our meal.
The place is just off the flyover so I thought it'd be bustling outside and noisy; proved me wrong(also maybe that it was a weekday)!
On the first floor of the big enough converted villa, I loved the manga-esque style, lighting was perfect.
Food:
My plan worked well, trying out one sashimi, nigiri, Maki and one sizzler(why sizzler?, just felt lucky I guess).
Kani Kamaboko Sashimi - the crab stick was awesome, fresh and smooth(very important to enjoy true texture)!
Ebi Tempura Nigiri - Prawn nigiri was good but not great, probably the only dish tonight that was good, not great types. Tempura retained a tad more batter than required.
Iko Nigiri - cuttle fish as expected and well with wasabi soy! Yum!
Spicy Salmon Maki - nearly rolled in seaweed and pleasurable! The rice used in the maki was good(sometimes a few places flop with the rice used).
Beef Sizzler - whatte wow! Well cooked and evenly flavoured dish. A bit too oily towards the end. If that's taken care of, it's a smacker!
The pickled radish and leafy vegetable available with green tea on the side was enjoyable till the end(refilled twice!😁)
Staff were well mannered, pleasant and responded quickly. Not too many around but just enough to handle your requests on time. Food was served rather quickly, maybe because only two tables were occupied for the night.
Valet service available and probably the air conditioning could be bettered. The seating could've been more comfortable(chair seating). I'll try sitting down for a meal next(option available). Hopefully they take the feedback! ?
I loved the place and would definitely be my frequently visited restaurants(really close to my house)!
Total bill was at Rs.2390. Well, chill boys and gals, there were two of us😅!
I've also attached some pics from my other visits here! All epic, especially, the chicken katsu don, must try! 👌
Definitely a sushi place worth visiting. No pork for the port lovers though. Nice spread for the vegetarians. Great interiors and good food. If you like Japanese food this is one place worth visiting.
A staircase leading you to a tiny Japanese village with walls abundant with manga comics and characters, this place is a shrine and a paradise for a mangaka and a person who has an obsession for Japan. A cute little table with a pair of chopsticks and an abundant leg room and a flat cushion, this place is as comfortable as it gets. Now let's talk about food. We ordered the atlantic salmon sushi. Now, as a person who is not a fan of seafood, my taste buds did not favour the sushi. But the quality and the presentation of the sushi was brilliance apart. My friends seemed to be hogging about how delicious it was. At that moment, I truly wished I had a taste bud for seafood. Now to the hero of the day, The spicy chicken ramen! Sorry for the inconvenience but the awesomeness and deliciousness about this dish cannot be simply explained in mere english alphabets. Oh my god. It was honestly one of the best dishes I have ever tasted in my life. It felt like the gods had sent me a bowl of fine ingredients cooked to perfection in a heavenly spicy chicken broth and ever so fine noodles. The chicken dumplings were really good! Service was brilliant, making sure we were always satisfied and attended to our every need. The jasmine tea was such a beautiful tea, hot and soothing to the soul and I just couldn't stop at one. Pricing is rather high but with such exquisite dishes and such fine dining, this is perfect. Cannot wait to try out more dishes! Sushi in a box, you are now my new obsession.
Being a Japanese food lover, I am not proud to admit that I don't like to try seafoods. Sushi being skin rolls of various types of fishes, I always kept my distance from such seafoods.
Went there just to look enjoy the ambiance.
It's in the main teynampet vicinity, can't miss out that. Parking is adequate.
I ordered a Veg Hiso Maki. Rest of my friends ordered tempura, teriyaki, salmon sushi, etc.
The Hiso Maki was typically raddish with carrot, cucumber mash stuffed in yori seaweed. The raddish had the upper hand in flavor. Couldn't taste any other ingredients.
Service was great. The pricing however is nominal.
Very good place to visit from usual restaurant in Chennai. Prices are worth for the food. Chef raju explained well to choose thr dish If one is visiting Japanese restaurant for first time. Ambience is excellent, service was excellent. One has to have bag for takeaway
Loved the experience. We had been to Absolute Thai in the same building before twice but never tried Sushi in a Box.
Cosy ambience. Tasty food. Warm hospitality. Parking also available in campus.
We ordered Prawn Tempura and Miso Ramen. Miso Ramen is minimally spicy but one can order Spicy Ramen too.
We had ramyeon, prawn tempura, salmon sushi . Sushi is an acquired taste so if u are not familiar with the taste it's bit tough to eat but after that you will love it. A small decent place for sushi lovers.
Very good japanese food. Three hotels are merged into one now. Service was decent.
I'm not much of a Sushi eater.
But Sushi and rolls were good and fresh, but Udon was terrible. I think udon depends on the thickness and chewy of the noodle.
The noodles was thin and the soup was bland. It clearly needs to be improved.
There are japanese animations on the wall
The ambience is not all that good.
Being a first timer trying Japanese food, was curious to try more but on seeing the food I took a different stand.
Japanese food are bland and plain when compared to Indian food. They do not add more spices or do have rich aroma. Sea food are not deep fried, rather they are plain and taken raw.
Sushi 🍣🍚: tried the Sushi Platter (prawn, red snapper, white snapper, octopus) with wasabi and salmon eggs.
All the sushi are good, and if you are more than 4 members try the 16 piece sushi
Tried the famous Jajang meyon - which is a noodle in black bean sauce. It was good, but was not hot.
Fish katsu curry - fish was too good (a salmon fish) with rice and tofu soup.
Tofu soup was ok (no idea why it was cold)
The service was good and fast.
Ambience with lighting and Japanese themed paintings are good.
Expensive food.
Overall, good Japanese food
Very good place for Japanese dishes. Sushi and Maki are fresh. Love their pickled ginger along with Wasabi sauce. Prices are also reasonable. They could increase the size of portions. 4 wheeler parking is available
Good Service, Good Food , nothing negative to say about this restaurant, it's merged with two other restaurants but no problem it's worth of a recommendation.
THUSHARA VENKHAT BALAJI
+5
This is not my first time getting a chicken maki roll from sushi in a box... I always order the same thing and it's one of my fav.. since I have moved abroad and I don't get this exact taste there... I prefer maki rolls from here all the time when I come to Chennai.
This is a must try for all the people who are not a fan of sushi but must definitely try this chicken maki 🥐🥐
Japanese cuisine specialised restaurant serving some yummy Sushi,Tempura, Ramen bowls and set menu. As name indicates, They have huge variety of sushi’s (you name it). There are other two restaurant - absolute Thai and cafe de Paris in same building as well.
Prawn crumb-fried and Spicy tuna maki roll were yummy but size was quite small. I felt the meat was also less all i had was carrot and cucumber.
Norwegian Salmon Nigiri - This was my first experience trying out Nigiri. It tasted really good (with soy dip). Spicy Ramen bowl was clear winner for me. One bowl can easily fill your tummy. Miso Ramen Bowl - This can be opted for people who prefer less spice.
The service was fast and staff were very attentive. The authentic Japanese floor seating setup is still in-progress. Overall fine place to have relaxed meal. Paradise for sushi lover !
The first time I tried Japanese cuisine in this place. I went with zero expectations but their ambience and hospitality were just amazing. Tried Misu ramen bowl with moderate spice, crumb fried shrimps and fish katsu set. Ramen was decent in taste. In the fish Katsu set, we Felt quantity is not sufficient for the money we pay. They could have increased the portion size. Fried shrimps were a bit salty. Service was slow and we waited more than 20 mins to get our order. Spacious Parking available in front of the restaurant.
A fine place to have Japanese food. The service wasn't that good honestly, they didn't bother to be friendly with us and when asked for suggestions they were like.. yea all are good. Japanese food is bland when compared to our Indian dishes so keep that in mind while ordering :P I went there hoping to get Octopus sushi (it's there in menu) but they didn't have it at that time.
Sashimi is good, the salmon was sweet and good, the maguro sashimi was good. Probably one of the highly recommended Japanese food place in Chennai india. Their service is good as well. Recommend this place for sashimi and sushi. It's a mixed restaurant of Japanese, korean and Thai food. The Thai Tom yum soup was average but nice. The Japanese food is very good, and their Korean food is also very good. The bibimbap was good as well. Bibimbap chicken was a bit sweet but mix it well and it's good with the miso soup. Price is a bit too expensive and remember there is a 10% service charge.
Well, I couldn't recollect when was the last time I had authentic Japanese food but this place comes up to showcase native food with awesome flavors all around.
Tofu miso - Silken tofu in miso broth; high in umami with deep savory taste; the tofu melts like a butter and with this base taste it was highly appetizing
Prawns tempura roll - Wholesome veggies topped with teriyaki & pineapple sauce with mayo; the fried batter tasted almost like the local sweet indian snacks; served with ginger and wasabi, this cheesy crunchy rice roll was WOW
Shitake tartare - Veg rice roll with shitake mushrooms & spicy mayo; bursts with flavor from mayo and mushrooms, was saturated with sweet-sour taste thereby giving a fusion of all tastes
Veg spicy ramen - Wicked spicy noodle soup; this might be the best deal of them all since it was unlike any other noodles which we would get across out here, MUST TRY
Tori Karaage set - Fried chicken nuggets served with rice, miso soup and salad; the nuggets went dry quickly so couldn't get the best texture from the crunch, sticky rice was so good with the ramen soup
Passion colada/Melon breezer/Mango flower -
The first one had a mix of passion fruit with coconut, frothy
The watermelon breezer was topped with chunks of melon shaken with essence, slurpy
Mango flower was too sweet owing to its strong base flavor, highly addictive
On the whole, this place has good varieties in their dishes; yes, kinda expensive but worth trying once. Limited parking space inside the Foodies kitchen campus.
The service was decent enough with suggestions upfront; waiting time was optimized with table booking preferred; while the lighting and the ambience would go well with the cuisine.
The ambience and place look good, but the ramen taste is different from the original Japanese ramen noodles. I tried so many ramen noodles in Japan; this taste is not even equal to average ramen noodles in Japan.
Tempura prawns taste almost the same as Japanese tempura. If you want to eat Japanese food, you can try this place. You can eat 🍣 sushi, another type of noodles.
Chicken roll maki was quiet good whereas the skewer prawns were so hot that smoke went off from both the ears... Didn't feel worth the money they charged....the only authentic Japanese thing was the music.
Amazing! Just amazing! Blew my mind! When I went to Chennai and said I want a Japanese experience, boy I was not expecting this much. Being a person who watches a lot of anime, the desire to have a chance to have ramen was always a dream of mine. More than the food, I loved the place! It was just too cool! The food is also amazing. On the downside, it is very costly - but totally worth my money. The ambiance of the place added with awesome food made my day! ❤️ This is a must-visit place for the cool ambiance and the variety but delicious food they provide. The staff is also really courteous and serving with a smile, making us feel even happier. Keep up the good work guys, will definitely visit again 😃
I've never had authentic Japanese food so I can't comment on this placed authenticity, but in terms of taste, ambiance, service, price it is good. The have a pretty big menu and the staff helps you out in selecting your dishes as per your palate.
