So me and my dad were around Alwarpet when I wanted to try this place for dinner. There was ample parking and the ambience was good .

There was only 1 server when we went so there was a bit of a delay in the overall service. But to make up this delay we were served some papads with chilli and peanut shreds chutney, coconut and garam masala and ghee to have with it (I would rate this as the best as it was a unique combination to try ) . Everything on the menu is based on Marati cuisine and also predominantly based on Millets.

We had ordered Bhajanichi Vade which was deep fried Kachori like poori with no stuffing served with curd...it was good but I felt that it could have been served with a savoury chutney as well. We had ordered Thalipeeth (4 pieces per serving )which was filling and Pithla which was little bland though it was suggested by the waiter.

We tried to avail the Axis card discount but sadly that offer cannot be availed on weekends (which is not mentioned anywhere)

Overall a filling meal . Can go there for a non spicy but authentic experience :)

Simple place with great ambience n sitting arrangement, good service etiquettes right from greeting at the reception till leaving the place.
The food was amazing, there was a great authentic touch to the food, first we were served with ghee, peanut n garlic chutney with green chilli chutney along with fryums which was yum.
We had ordered kombidhichi sagoti with Poli which was mouth watering n really delicious. A coconut based gravy with right amout of spices making it aptly tasteful.
If you're in Chennai, it's a must go place.

Nice ambience, quaint and quiet.  The latter may have been because we were the first people there on a weekday for lunch.  Attentive, informed service from the waitstaff who clearly knew the entrees well and were able to help us decide on the food choices.

Food quality was good, though I found the Sabudana vada excessively chewy.  The Bhaarli Vaangi was outstanding, though could have used a little less oil (but still outstanding).  The Pithla was also very good - we packed it and took it home for us to continue enjoying it later.

Good experience.  Will happily come back again.

Good Food equals good mood which Meena Tai understands all very well. My first experience at the peshwa cusine and every bite was worth a try, the green chilli chutney, Kairi Phane, Kolhapuri Mutton and the chicken curry with jowar bhakri are a must try.

An authentic Maharashtrian cuisine serving restaurant in Chennai, perhaps the best one in the city. The Mutton thali and the chicken thali both are sumptuous and very tasty. The staff is courteous and explains the dishes very nicely and in a very good manner. The restaurant situated in Alwarpet is a conglomerate of 3 restaurants - An Ethiopian restaurant, a Parsi restaurant and Meena tai's the Maharashtrian restaurant. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone craving for Marathi style khana.

Authentic Maharashtrian food no doubt. I tried the veg executive thali and it was delicious! Only drawback was that the delicacies in the thali were way too less. People go for thali to explore and enjoy different varieties which was missing here. In dessert also there was just one option.

Apart from well done interiors and very friendly staff decked up in Maharashtra inspired wear, this restaurant has delicious food. Both the Signature and Executive thalis are good! The mutton dishes are supremely good, however, the chicken and sabudana vadas need some work. Must try for foodies looking for regional cuisines in Chennai.

We mistook this place for Khanaboy (Which was upstairs) and went in as the wait staff welcomed us warmly. Had the thali and were still wondering why the food tasted and sounded like Marathi food all over. Only when we asked for the custard which we had read a review on, did the waiter tell us that this is Meena Tai's and not Khanaboy.
All in all the place was a pleasant mistake. Excellent dishes on the thali, all made to perfection and good representation of Maharashtrian cuisine. The staff were dressed in the traditional marathi way and were very attentive and informative. Particularly loved the mutton curry which was soft and loaded with flavor. Will strongly recommend this place for a quick Maharashtrian food quip. Simple ambience, tasty food and pleasingly good service, give it a try!

I've never been introduced to Maharastrian food before. My first attempt at it and I loved the flavours and spices. A comforting taste that lingered well after I almost polished off my thali.

With Simple Decor and Royal tables, the place has the feel of a house environment.

The staff were courteous. They explained every one of those hard-to-pronounce names in detailed and skillfully managed all of our refills!

I took the Sea Food Thali! And please note : It's unlimited for INR 850 + Taxes. Way better than the other unlimited set meals that you find in the city.

- Beverage : Everyone was choosing the kukum soda. I went down the raw mango + jaggery route and I loved it. The tinge of chili was different, yet, nice. Oh, and yes, the Kukum soda is as good as people hype it to be!

- Guava Salad : here is a fruit that comes in a savoury salad format. Rather interestingly impressive!

- Potato Salad : A regular one. That I've eaten often before. Just salted and sauteed for taste.

- Sabudana Vada : Two pieces of this will never be enough. Beautifully made.

- Prawns Fry : Delicious again. A very typical Indian kind of starter.

- Prawns Gravy : a tad bit too liquidy it was. Seemed to have a spinach base to it. Went well with the puri, though.

Tomato Soup : Another amazingly churned out dish - great for a sore throat. The right amount of pepper and tangy-ness.

- Prawn Bhaat : Long grained rice that stood out separately! Infused with Indian classical spices, I loved this version of what looked like a Pulav or Biryani to me.

- Piyush - unfortunately this dish had a tad bit too much of cardamon for my liking. But, my friends seemed to like it.

- Chirote - The only dish that I've had before and I enjoyed it, this time as well.

Bottomline : The Thali is worth the penny. For those who can take spice, here is a great option.

This place has been around for sometime, but did not find an opportunity to visit till I came across their set meal poster floating around. We are a group of foodies at work, who like to try various cusine. This time it was Maharastrian food. Me, having lived in Mumbai for 12yrs fairly had an idea what to expect, others were new to the taste.

I was skeptical about trying Marathi food for the first time and I wasn't disappointed .. loved their kokum soda and sabudana vada.. The chicken thali was delectable, way better than mutton thali. Pulao tasted more like biriyani and a good one at that. Dessert was the only disappointment .. we didn't like Piyush or chirote, it was dry for our taste.

A Maharashtrian restaurant in Chennai - that itself ignites me to go here..!!
Very well planned interiors to add up to your experience here. The staff is also from Maharashtra and so marathi can actually be your language of communication here :)
Food - ordered the thali so as to try as many dishes ad possible. Every dish is prepared in an authentic marathi style, right from the soup to the srikhand. Spices give an essence and takes you to a virtual Maharashtra in your head.
Just that if you are a peace-place person, you will enjoy the place. And it seemed to be a little on the expensive side. Can just give it a try. Not a regular place.
Food - 4/5
Pricing - Expensive
Ambiance - 4/5 (not that fond of a peace place)

An interesting Marati restuaruant in the city. Ok , here we go. First, this place has wallet parting available. So my first resistance to drive to a hotel is fixed :-). Next it's in the mid of the city, so should be easily accessible. There are 3 restaurants in this complex and Meera Tai is on the ground floor. When you go inside, you will feel a typical marati resturant in the out skirts of Mumbai. Slow music, ancient paintings, antique pieces decorated on the wall, will reduce your heart beat and make the time run slower.

The food here is not something that you will love to eat when you are damn hungry (Unless you have a craze for Marati food). Else you will love to strike off that "I had Marati food once and it's nice".
I am an vegetarian, and i loved the choices here. For the first time the starters are not one of Paneer, Corn, Vegetables, and Cauliflower. We ordered an Yam dish that is roasted and well cooked with a mint sauce. It's delicious. And next is a sticky vada based on rice balls (Jowaraci in tamil) which is served with Yogurt sauce and is equally good. Lookout for different roti varieties and other gravies.

Authentic maharashtrian fare in a very antique ambience with courteous staff who take pains to explain and guide through the menu- a must visit!
Thali s are the best option and you get to taste the best. The papad and kokum soda which are complimentary really set the pace, papad to be had with their gun powder- coconut, ghee, and the garlicky chutneys!! The seafoood thali with surmai fry and prawn masala and prawn biriyani was delicious. The guava salad and the boiled potato salad were tasty and the tomato Saar they give is flavoursome. Saabudane vada with the peanut curd combo is a must try. The yam starter had slightly thicker slices and the green chutney was raw and that was the only sore point. The rawmango Jaggery drink was refreshing too. All in all a very pleasant satisfactory experience!

Highly recommended both not food as well as for service too, We luckily got a table without wait. Undoubtedly the first thing which strikes you is how elegant the space is. It's not a large restaurant, but they have got the Maharashtrian fine dine theme right, with the prussian blue chandeliers, antique fixtures and classical Marathi songs ,A place must visit

Meena Tai the first and only Maharastrian restaurant in Chennai. The word Tai means elder sister in Marathi. I want to try their food ever since it is opened but couldn't. Finally managed to go today. It is one among 3 restaurants in same building. All 3 are different and first in Chennai.

This place is easy to locate. Valet parking is available so no need to worry about parking. Ambiance is like old traditional house. Nothing great to excite. Lighting can be improved for better experience. Service is excellent. Courteous and attentive. Patiently explain to us about the menu which we are clueless.

I ordered Gaavran Jeevan Business Combo for which I got Kokum Soda as complimentary by Nearbuy deal. It consists of -

1. Peruchi Dahyatli Koshimbir - Salad 🥗 made with Guava as base. Quantity is very less but taste was good.

2. Kelphulachi Bhaaji - gravy made out of banana flower. It was tasty.

3. Poli - initially thought it was our Poli sweet but they said Chapati. I was expecting it to be some different variety of chapati but what I got is usual chapati. No difference. It was soft and good.

4. Kokum Soda - Kokum sharbet with Jaljeera and soda mixed. Taste was good.

This combo was accompanied by 2 podi, ghee and fryams. Menu is totally strange and may mislead us say Vade in menu is nothing but Poori. Once order placed we will get the notification in SMS about our que position in kitchen with link to get updated status. New concept.

Now comes the worst part price. The above combo without Kokum soda priced @ Rs.350/- plus taxes which is way high for the quantity we get. Also it is not unlimited combo. Only one chapati which will not be filling. But for pricing I am satisfied of trying new food.

By the way it's my 300th review.

I had been longing to have sabudana vada and poli bhaji ever since I got to Chennai which was when I found out about Meena Tai's! And because I did not want to take a chance on me not being able to have sabudana vada, I booked a table on Zomato just in case. The restuarant is simple and tastefully decorated with antique nutcrackers and graters and photos of men in Marathi attire. I had made up my mind of what I wanted to eat, and intended to order them from their alcarte menu but ordered the thali instead since it had most of the items from their menu. It was delicious! The sabudana vada was crispy, poli was soft and flaky, the bharli vangi was just delicious! The tondli bhaat reminded me of home and the Piyush was a great end to a very filling meal! The ambience is really good, with popular Marathi songs like reshma chi reghani and mala zau dya playing in the background. For an hour I forgot that I was in Chennai!
I think the food is overpriced considering the quantity that you get. But the quality of food is really good and I was reminded of home and felt like I was having lunch at my Tai's place!
For all those who intend to dine here, I suggest you go during Gudi Padua (Marathi new year) which falls sometime in March, I was told that there would be srikhand and aamrakhand with puri.

This place is located on the same building as Batliwala & Khananboy ( Another place on my wish list which has Parsi Cuisine). .

Being a predominantly Maharashtrian cuisine, this place automatically reminds you of Home so much ( Mumbai to be specific) . .

For starters we ordered Kothambir Wada and Sabudana Wada. Both were really tasty and yummy! :)

We also ordered Misal Pav which tasted so authentic. The only thing I didn't like is the Pav. The quality of Pav available in Chennai isn't good ( when compared with Mumbai) and if you can bake some of your own pavs would be great!

For the main course we ordered Bharli Vaangi ( Stuffed Brinjal) and Kelphulachi Bhaji along with Bhakri. . The Food was good. . We also ordered Pulva which was average . .

Overall, the quality of dishes is good and their genuinely authentic!

PS: Do not miss their Misal Pav and Sabudana Wada. They are must try dishes :)

I have a weakness for ethnic knick knacks and all things antique. This place entirely floored me with their courteous service, beautiful interiors and delicious food. From various silver ornaments, swords, chalanga, portraits of kings to even a saree stuck on the wall, this place screamed "Maharashtra" in every sense. How I wish I could take that powder blue cupboard with those cute glass jars home!

At first we were thoroughly lost and confused after seeing the menu, but the very friendly waiter helped us with it. We even got complimentary Kokum Soda and Papad to go along with our meal. The mini papads were served with ghee, green chillies mixed with peanuts and coconut gun powder. One must mix all these together and make a paste first to have it along with the papad. It was an awesome combination indeed though you need patience to mix and have them properly. The drink was very refreshing and had a slight hint of Jal Jeera as well.

We kick started our meal with the Sur Nache Kap starter which is basically sliced yam which is fried with sooji. The outer layer was crisp and the yam was oh-so soft with the right amount of spices. It was served with pudina chutney.

For main course we had Kombedichi Shagoti along with Poli, which is nothing but a luscious chicken gravy along with chapathis. That Chicken gravy had succulent pieces of chicken which just fell off the bone and that gravy, OMG, it was bomb and one of the finest I have tasted. It was spiced perfectly and went nicely along with the layered Rotis.

We also ordered the Pathare Prabhu Pulav which was this aromatic rice dish which tasted like biriyani. It also had succulent pieces of chicken, perfectly fried small pieces of potato and a boiled egg which was sliced into two. Though the spice quotient was relatively high in this dish, it tasted really good.

Thus, if you really want to savour Maharashtrian cuisine in the city in all its finery, then this is the place to go!

The excitement of trying new cuisine propelled us to meena tai's !!! After much researching on the dishes we were confident but it wavered once we saw the actual menu ! It was mumbo jumbo for a sec... situated in very serene neighbourhood, it was easy enough to find ! First a mention of the hospitality ! Just superb ... they understood we were clueless and we're patient in explaining and suggesting ... Their welcome dish with some chips with pure ghee, green chilli, I think It was ginger or garlic I'm not sure was enticing !! Though it was on the hot side ... We kept hogging with the ghee ! For starters we had kombdi harve sukke. .. The veg starter bharli vaangi was not least favorite of the dinner ... for mains we went laal bhoplaychi bhajji (pumpkin based ) kholapuri mutton sukka, kolambhiche hirwa (prawns in coconut green sauce) with breads - thalipaatee and jowar bhakri !! The pumpkin seemed good .. I loved the chicken starter better than the mutton and my most favorite of the dinner were the prawns ... succulent chicken and the yummy prawns !! For the breads honestly they were different and had a taste but for me after all the rotis and naan and parathas, was not appetising enough but I am sure it will grow on me soon !! For the dessert we had the chirote (sugarry biscuit )and dudhi halwa (loki wala ) - now I get why super heroes eat loki ... A complete surprise ending to the dinner ! Do try it on !! All in all .. It looks like another trip is needed to explore further and the other two restaurants right there is also another puller !! Well done team .. PS don't forget the sabhudana vade.
Start with it !

Probably one of the most talked about fine dining places in town with a taste of Maharashtra's authentic delicacy at its best. It's not very often that you visit a restaurant and love its vibe from the moment you step in. This is a lovely place. Adorned with antiques and artefacts from the Maratha land, it infuses a cozy, nostalgic feeling, just perfect for long conversations. The place is fairly spacious, with a seating capacity of 50-60 at a time I think.

The food, of course, remains true to its roots and that's the best part about this place. We ordered mini matar karanji (made of peas) for starter. It was crisp and was fried in rather less oil which I much appreciated. We followed it with laal bhoplyachi bhaji (made of pumpkin), kombodhichi shagoti (chicken dish), poli and jowar bhakri for main course. The pumpkin dish unleashed a unique flavor in my mouth and despite being spicy hot, felt tasty. The chicken had a light textured gravy and went well along with the poli/ roti. We rounded off our gorging by ordering piyush and kharvas for desserts. Both were more from the custard family and could have been better. They felt a tad hard and the absence of consistency suppressed their taste.

The team was young and helpful, although service could have been a tad faster. Billing was hassle free and this place has valet parking.

A good place for tickling those desi appetites :) Recommended.

Have been waiting to go there for a while now and having lived in Pune for a few years, it set our expectations high. A lovely looking place, neat, well decorated but not cluttered, it straightaway set our taste buds going. We ordered the tomato saar, which was awesome, one of the best Indian soups I've ever had, simple and beautiful, the famous sabudana vada with the yoghurt peanut chutney and sandwiched pomfret with green chutney, both lovely, lacking in a little salt maybe. The mains were poli and jowar roti with kohlapuri mutton fry, absolutely loved the mutton, cooked to perfection. We were sceptical since kohlapuri dishes are known to be very high in chilli spice and we are not quite used to that, stayed nicely on the palate. Keep it up, guts...look forward to another visit soon.

A spontaneous visit around the area of Alwarpet brought me to this place after looking up some suggestions on Zomato. Previously I have just heard of its name but never really delved into what it is about and what they serve. However this time I thought I would do a bit of experimenting and looked up Meena tai. Meena tai is in Alwarpet and colocated with a Parsi restaurant called Batlivala and Khanabhoy and an upcoming ethiopian restaurant called Abisynnian. Meena tai serves all variations of food from the length and breadth of Maharashtra.

After salivating for so long at their food photos on instagram, I just recently landed in Meena Tai's for dinner!
Located in one of the quite and sometimes eerie streets off TTK road , Meena Tai's is a fine fine restaurant serving up some delicious Marathi food.
The place can ba quite hard to find, but once on the street it's hard to miss.
It shares a building with two other restaurants Batlivala & Khanaboy and Abysinnian.
Meena Tai's is the first restaurant u see when u enter.

The ambiance and the decor gives an air of an old Marathi house. The chandeliers and lighting is beautiful. Some thing u notice as soon as u enter.

There was a street food festival menu when we went. They had a variety of chats and other street foods typical to Maharashtra.
They have good options for the vegetarians so no worries there.

So we ordered the

😑 chutney che paplet - this is pondert fish switch green chutney fand shallow fried. I personally did not like it. It had very little salt and the fish to be honest was a little undercooked. Maybe that's how the dish is supposed to be but I wouldn't recommend it.

😁 chicken Baidu Roti - this was off the street food festival menu.shallow fried parathas with minced chicken stuffing. I loved it!! Reminded me of kothu parotta 😜

💟 Malvani vade with Malvani Kombdi Rassa - Simply multi grain wheat Puris with traditional coconut and chilli based chicken curry. After the chutney fish debacle we wanted to keep things simple and we ordered it and this dish was a simple reminder that something as simple and straight forward dish like this is enough to wow you. It was the perfect combination. Chicken cooked to pure perfection and the puris ( very surprisingly and to our delight) we're oil free.

The staff were very patient, given the time I take to order, and had a good knowledge about the food.

The place is a little pricey , like all other fine fine restaurants. But it's a must try if u are in the mood for something different but not so different. If you know what I mean 😛

The after-gym-hunger-pangs had to be satisfied with some good food. Thus Ended up at Mena Tai's!!
Let me first start from the menu. Obviously very authentic Maharashtrian stuff!! But the minute I was handed the set food plate/thali menu, I immediately placed the order for the seafood meal. It was priced @INR 899. So obviously I expected a lot to be presented on the plate. A lot in terms of variety. (However I do acknowledge that constituents of the meal were already mentioned in the menu.) but when u r handed over the plate.. U keep expecting more.

Quantity:
Basically there was one starter( two pieces of prawn), one gravy ( 2 pieces of fish), one rice variety ( on the likes of prawn biryani) and one bread variety. It also had one soup (tomato saar), raw mango and one drink. Honestly the plate looks really empty. I kept thinking that there s more to come. And with that price, it was completely no value for money.

Taste: 3.5/5

The prawn stuffs were great. Both starter and biryani.

Chicken green masala starter which was amazing. The chicken Was really soft and well cooked.

Fish gravy was tasteless. I did not find any taste of anything in it. No flavor of any spice or fish or anything absolutely.

Brinjal curry- A main to go with ROTIS (Ordered this on the server's suggestion) . Again absolutely nothing tasteful about it.

Ambiance:4/5
Service:5/5
A special mention here for the guy who served us. He was very well informed and was very very courteous. I gave my review on the tab. He walked up to me and asked as to how they could improve and what was wrong with the food. I spoke at length and breadth. And the whole team joined in for the discussion. And that was when I was told that thali was actually UNLIMITED!!! but honestly I think I would have ordered only those prawn starters once more.. Nothing else. Nevertheless the manager also came up to us and apprised on the next week events and how they are also working on the menu for the thali.

Well let's see, I might go for there street food festival to try my hand at the various pavs :)

Excellent food! 2 of us had the mutton thali and the seafood thali, and both were great. The service was warm and helpful. Must visit.

They say that into each life some rain must fall and so it did in mine the day I visited Meena Tais. Don’t get me wrong, it is a nice restaurant and the décor and the food are good but it was just that personal experience that caused negative feelings. We had eaten some excellent komdi vade at two places: One in Dadar at a roadside place that came alive in the evenings and second in a restaurant in the Taj President. With both being out of reach due to distance and, in the latter case, the price as well, this dish was becoming a memory when someone told us it’s on the menu at Meena Tai’s. So off we went.

The place on the ground floor of a building that houses two more restaurants, is nice enough. The décor features many elements from Meena Tai’s part of the country, giving the restaurant a charm of its own. Most tables were occupied on that Sunday afternoon.

Unlike most patrons present, as our senior citizen appetites could not accept the challenge posed by any of the five thalis on offer, we went a la carte and sipped on the delicious Kokum Soda while waiting for the food, which came after a bit of a wait. That’s when disappointment struck; the vade was fine, but the chicken in the gravy had the distinct taste of one who had spent too long a time in a freezer, probably at the suppliers, as the waiter told us that the restaurant gets fresh supplies each morning. My little dream of reliving a Bombay memory faded fast. In all fairness, I must say they were quick to take it back and suggested the Kolhapuri Mutton Sukka, which was very good indeed. The “sukka” was not dry as we thought it

Subrata and Uttam were friendly and attentive.

The negativity that underlies this review is a result of a personal disappointment and is not a fair comment on the food which was obviously good as evidenced by the enjoyment on the faces of the other diners.

Was in Chennai last weekend after several months and scouring the supplements for the latest happenings, when the ad for MeenaTai's caught my eye. Immediately bundled my aunt and her 15 year old and made our way there.

We luckily got a table without wait. Undoubtedly the first thing which strikes you is how elegant the space is. It's not a large restaurant, but they have got the Maharashtrian fine dine theme right, with the prussian blue chandeliers, antique fixtures (like the awesome vegetable shredders), prints and a framed paithani saree). Adding to the ambience is the soft Marathi classical music interspersed with old school lavani songs! Lovely...

Having lived in Bombay for several years, am quite familiar with some of the fare and its interesting to see this upmarkety focus on a specific cuisine. We went theough the menu and I clearly had set up mind up on the seafood thali, while my companions decided to share the vaangyache dahytale along with a pulva and poli. We also ordered a papad kosimbhir and the staple sabudana vade to begin.

The papad kosimbhir was essentially masala papads broken in with onions and coriander and was tasty, even better was the vades; perfectly crunchy crisp casing yielding into the soft batter. Yum! Must try...

My kokum drink with the thali was fab and I drank several repeats. The rava crumb fried prawns were awesomely soft and delicious, as was the sweet spicy tomato saar and kosumbari. The prawn rice was punchy and accompanying it, was a fish curry, which was a wee bit tarty for my taste, but went well with the jawar bakri.

The ladies absolutely raved about their selections and that brinjal curry was sublime! Mind, this is served room temperature, as it is yogurt based; delicious and highly recommended. The lightly spiced pulva and soft polis were good.

As part of the thali, I got a glass of piyush (really good) along with a chiroti..the former a blend of shrikand and yogurt and the latter a traditional puff pastry, which was flaky and nice.

We also got an order of paakaatlya purva, like these deep fried mini puris with a saffron syrup, which was ok, but I was already pretty satiated to register anything special. I would have perhaps liked to have seen puranpolis on the menu instead?

Uttam, our server was awesome! Genuinely attentive and informed, often gently imploring us for seconds. This is the kind of service, I'd happily pay 10% for.

Overall Meena Tai is a welcome entrant on the constantly evolving Chennai eating scene. The food is a refined take on traditional fare, without going crazy on the fusion route! Go Visit!

Ps.The space also houses a Parsi and soon to be opened Ethiopian eatery. I peeked into the spaces and again the design/decor elements were awesome! Can't wait to try, next visit...

This was the first time for me with Maharashtrian Cuisine and with Meena Tai's also.I was delightfully surprised at Meena Tai's with Maharashtrian cuisine.Thank you Meena Tai's,as you have got delicious food, nice ambience and excellent service.

As i was bit casual,i hadn't reserved my seat. But still Mr.Antony warmly welcomed and accomadated me at a cosy place of my choice.I felt as if i was in Maharashtra, due to the setting and attire of the team.Everything  was Maharashtrian.Menu.....had a difficult time in reading and understanding.

But Mr.Easwar, captain, made life easier for me,by taking time to explain me about the cuisine. He patiently answered my questions.
He was very helpful.

I was quite impressed with the genuine warmth he has exuded in his interaction with me.He has served me cheerfully, pleasantly, professionally and courteously.

I was happy with his non-intrusive minding.

Thank you Mr.Easwar.

I have ordered Chicken Thali.

Food was tastier and the quantity was sufficient and apt.I was encouraged to go for second helping also.
And I didn't miss this oppurtunity to go for second helping with Piyush and Chirote. The combination was superb.

I really enjoyed the soft potatoes in Pathare Prabhu Pulao.I was surprised with Malwani Vade.I was expecting something similar to Poori and yes....it looked like Poori at first sight. But that carefully cooked golden brown colour with thick base reminded me that it was Malwani vade. Tastier it was.

I liked the clean and crisp, unique water bottles.Pleasing to the eyes.

Tummy was full yet light in the end.

I really enjoyed the experience.Thank you,Meena Tai.

Went here on our recent visit to Chennai. The place is well maintained. The servers there are also well informed. Eswar was kind enough to show us around the restaurant.
Coming to food, many of the dishes were unknown to me; however, Eswar explained them with patience. Although we ate veg option there, they were very good and had some special taste.
Thalli option had unlimited option which was also nice to have.
Dessert: a sweet papad with curd was innovative and tasty enough to have more than 1.
I will recommend this restaurant for all veggies

It was a girl's day out, we decided to go for the thali. I had to admit, one of the best meal I have had. Right quantity and everything tasted so good in its own way. The restaurant is also very neatly done to remind us of the Maharashtrian concepts (those types of nut crackers and chunnis were hung on the wall). Must visit for all those who like to try other than north and south Indian to venture into something different :)

We had a very nice experience of visiting this place yesterday for dinner.Serves Authentic Maharashtrian cuisine @ home made recipes which we enjoyed a lot. Ample car parking space along with valet facility. Ambiance was nice , quiet and enjoyable specially the old antic wardrobe which young once will not get to see as nows a days these are non existent :-).
Coming to main thing “Food” – Awesome. Must to have Kokum Soda,Kombdi Hirve Sukke,Mutton Kanda Lasun,Surmai Fry,Malvani Vade(Puri) and Malvani Kombdi Rasa.Special Recommendation - Mutton Kanda Lasun.

Above all…Staff is really good & friendly. They understand the exact requirement of guest and put forward their suggestions as to best suite the requirement. Mr.Eshwar was taking care of our requirement which we really appreciate.

This is a must place to visit to enjoy Maharashtrian Food at its best. Thanks Team – Meena Tai.

Weekend cravings led us to Meena Tai's, and we weren't disappointed, to say the least. Good food and excellent service make this (and its sister restaurant, Batlivala & Khanabhoy) stand out proudly. We had good first impressions, being quickly seated at the table. The ambience was different. Good different. Blue lights, nutcrackers of kinds mounted on the walls, contemporary paintings, very well done up. I had, to start with, Bhajaniche Vade, which was nicely balanced and crisp. For mains, we had the Jowar Bhakri along with Katachi Amti. The breads were consistently and perfectly done, all precisely cut into quarters. The Katachi Amti, the dal i.e., was a standout. Creamy, rich and beautiful, whilst still being light on the stomach. Brilliant food. We also had the Nagpuri Vada Bhaat, which was my mother's favorite. The vada was mashed using a mortar and pestle and was mixed with the rice, on which a tempering, made of mustard oil and dried chilli, was poured. It was very unique and something which certainly can't be found out in the open these days. To drink, we had the Mattha and the Limboo Sharbat, both of which were very good. The Limboo Sharbat, with its cinnamon, felt a bit too sweet to my tastes. But overall, very good food. But what really set it apart was the service. Prompt, courteous and efficient. Very rare to find this quality. Meena Tai's is an easy recommendation, particularly to those looking to have a different and authentic experience with Maharashtrian food. 5/5.

After having tried Batlivala and Khanabhoy, and thoroughly enjoying the dining experience there, we were excited to come back and try out Meena Tai's authentic Maharashtrian cuisine. It did not disappoint. We tried their vegetarian thalis - option 1 and 2 which included some lovely brinjal curry (bharli vaangi), pea samosas (mini matar karanji), kothimbir vadi (coriander patty), tondli masale bhaat (khichdi), and tasty pulva (pulav). The dessert was even better - an ensemble of piyush and chirote (sreekhand and crispy flaky biscuit). Great food and great service - Eswar and Subrata, who despite not being Maharashtrian (Eswar is from Sivakasi and Subrata is Bengali) gave us the intricate details of every dish and even helped us understand the nuances of Maharashtrian culture. This place is a must visit!

Went in during a weekend for lunch..
I was not sure if i would like the cuisine.. But i loved it.. 😊 i am always a fan of piping hot sabhudana vade.. And that was amazingly cooked crispy on the outside with dahi and peanut dip. We ordered jowar bhakri and bharli vaangi.. N i fell in love with the Ghoda masala used in the curry.. Subtle but still yummy. The tomato saar which was tempered with ghee was good along with tondli masala bhaat. My husband drank the tomato saar just like that as well.. And the chirote was too good.. But i am not a great fan of ghee.. So could not eat more of that..
On the whole loved the food and the service

Very snugly located... striking absence of the word "restaurant" mentioned anywhere on the board or menu. And the reason probably was bcos the place served food which tasted absolutely home made. Slightly over priced but definitely worth the money.
The chapati like stuff called poli along with the chicken recipes was fantastic. Even the marathi beverages were nice. Should try out the vegetarian stuff the next time. This place
Should be visited only by inquisitive foodies as they serve ONLY Marathi cuisine. So should not expect other cuisines here.

P.S. the colostrum based pudding KHARVAS should not be missed.

Meena Tai makes you want to visit your Tai for a meal. The ambiance has it's own charm but I was pleasantly surprised how regional food from the state of Maharashtra isn't promoted as much. Such a treat it was! We has the dry prawn and chicken starters and pat ourselves on the back for picking it from the menu. The mutton curry with the simple rice dish balances flavours and is literally making my mouth water as I write this review.
If you have never tried or know about Maharashtra cuisine fret not! The servers are suave :). They will guide through the entire menu with ease. I wish I dropped in more often. I am already getting hungry again.

After being extremely impressed with food at Batlivala and Khanaboy I was really eager to sink my teeth into some maharashtrian cuisine at Meena Tai's. My friend and I walked in one day to try the place out ! The decor was nicely put together with age old artefacts on the walls an the waiters dressed in a white Kurta very much similar to the famed dabbawalas of Mumbai , lending a touch of authenticity to the place ! My friend and I were new to Maharashtrian cuisine so found the menu a little daunting , now service is where this restaurant really excels. The ever helpful wait staff were ready to help us out with the menu and suggestions on the cuisine it self. We were waited on by a Mr. Eashwar . He took it upon himself to see that we had the best of times at MT. The food was delicious an the portions were the right size allowing us to explore our options in the menu ! The sol kadhi , a beverage with coconut milk , garlic an spices is a must try ! All in all an extremely satisfying experience, do drop in enjoy the sights , smells an service on offer. As for me I look forward to visiting again soon !

Accidentally dropped in to this place, while scouting for some Parsi food, but had one hell of a meal. The Maharashtrian cuisine is authentic and would really bring a Maharashtrian to tears of nostalgia! They have managed to have some of the core traditional Maharashtrian items which are usually not found on the menus even in Maharashtra on account of the efforts involved in getting them right. And I must say, they have got them right! The portions could be a bit generous though. All in all, a must visit place for foodies!

After being so impressed with batlivala & khanaboy. I wanted to try meena tai blindly believing that it will be good.
🐣As soon as we were seated. They served chips with three types of assortments.
👉ghee
👉thecha:
Made with dry grated coconut and chilli powder.
👉lasuni chutney:
Made with green chillies.very spicy indeed.
All these three paired well with the chips that they served. Asked for one more serve 😜
🐣My order:
👉sol kadhi:
Coconut milk infused with garlic and spices.Such a different taste, initially i wasn't sure whether i liked it or not but after few sips. I liked it👍🏻
👉Papad koshimbir:
A papad salad, how interesting ? I loved it. It was made wit crushed papad, onion and coconut shaves.it was crunchy and refreshing. 👍🏻
👉kombdi hirvi sukke:
Boneless tender chicken tossed in green masala.
Perfect for starter.👍🏻👍🏻
👉kombidhichi shagoti:
Lovely chicken gravy prepared with coconut milk and spices. I really liked the taste of the gravy but the chicken pieces were very bony, which i was not impressed about.
👉 poli:
Super soft layered chapathi. Perfect with gravy.
👉kombdi-naaral bhath:
Kinda like a biriyani but not a biriyani.rice cooked with spice, chicken and coconut milk.served with raita. Not a big fan but i liked it. 👍🏻
🐣Dessert:
👉Fresh coconut karanji:
Not what i expected. My fault😂. I was expecting something thing like a pastry but nope its not.but not bad to end a meal👍🏻
🐣Ambience:
Very homely place, simple and beautifully decorated.loved the vintage feel of the restaurant.
🐣Service:
I must say these guys do great job. The menu was so foreign to me,never had any maharashrian food before.they were so helpful and very courteous.
🐣Final verdict:
I will for sure visit again. I feel its a bit pricey for homely food. But again wouldn't mind to pay tis price for the ambience and service that they provide. It would cost 1500 for 2 people.
🐣heard that they are opening a Ethiopian themed really in the same building. Just cnt wait.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE IN THE MANAGEMENT AND STAFF👍🏻

Another resto from the same management as the Parsi restaurant Batliwala and Khanaboy.
We had a great evening with minor hiccups. The place is set as a simple diner with old age cooking artifacts displayed on the wall. The waiters are dressed in the Maharastrian style and adds a bit of authenticity to the place. Kudos to the staff for being attentive, courteous and knowledgable. They were able to help us decide our courses very well.
Coming to the food, the menu is VAST!!! All the usual suspects are present but with several new items, bot the veg and NV guys will be spoilt for choice. Similar to their sister restaurant, the food was good, if not great. Nothing much to complain about.
Overall a great place to try typical regional dishes and spend some quality time.

I fail to recollect when was the last time I was left so impressed by a restaurant that I could just not find even the slightest of a glitch and left compelled to rate it a 5 on 5. You have a certain set of parameters based on which you rate an eatery and Meena Tai scored a home run on each of those counts.

Location - it is located on the road parallel to Eldam's in Alwarpet. A complex which houses a couple of other restaurants has Meena Tai on the ground floor.

Ambience - a place does not have to be spread out over a vast expanse to leave you impressed when it comes to ambience and Meena Tai is a perfect example of that. A rectangular room with artefacts and wall hangings from the past depicting Maharashtrian history or culture adorn the parallel running walls. Spacings in one of the walls carries those huge jars from yesteryears used to store pickles and other eateries. These jars have the spices and condiments made use of in the preparation of Marathi cuisine. Walk further down the room and you're greeted by a slightly bigger room that can accommodate another 20 people making the place look seemingly good enough to house in about 35-40 people at a go.

Staff and service - recommendations and suggestions to guide you through the menu and order placing is paramount in a restaurant that serves a cuisine with which people aren't really well versed and the staff here does a brilliant job in making sure you order the best of combinations with a clear explanation regarding the best accompaniment of any dish. Another point which made me appreciate their service was the fact that every course of the meal was brought in after the earlier was done and dusted with. It just couldn't have gotten any better.

Food and menu - we went in with a 4 course meal and not one dish left us disappointed. That should explain me rating them a 5.

Beverages:
Mattha - something in between chhacch and lassi, the consistency in texture and salt in apt amounts were the reasons we thoroughly enjoyed mattha.

Kairi panhe - mango juice with a rich mixture of chillies, cumin seeds and jaggery as sweetener combined to put together this wonderful drink which was light with a subtle flavour of spice.

Kokum soda - club soda, cumin seeds in roasted form and kokum syrup make up for this wonderful sweet and sour concoction that is refreshing and suitable to battle the heat outside.

Starters:
Sabudana vade - sabudana mixed with mashed potatoes and deep fried to make round croquettes which are served along with a yoghurt and peanut based chutney that adds the much needed punch. Definitely worth a try, this one.

Kuthimbir vade - bone dry on the inside, made out of coriander and chickpeas, these flat discs are fried and best eaten with the yoghurt chutney. Slightly elusive in terms of taste but I do, remember relishing the initial crunch.

Main course:
Bharli vangi - order this one with shut eyes and without putting much thought. Aubergines with a tangy flavour and cooked in a spicy masala made out of onions and ground peanuts it carries a brilliant taste while the goda masala infuses life into the dish.

Pithla - chickpea curry with garlic and onions that also brought along an overpowering taste of coconut which was strange but with ghee that is complementary, its taste elevates to another level altogether. Putting it simply, this was more like their version of dal tadka, in an entirely different style though.

Tondali masale bhaat - rice cooked with goda masala, ivy gourd and cashews is best eaten with tomato saar and it was probably the best dish of the evening for me. Apparently, it is of the signature Maharashtrian rice dishes and I'm so not surprised after having tasted it.

Tomato saar - with a thick broth, this tomato soup like preparation literally added magic to the rice it is supposed to be eaten with. Mighty impressive.

Breads:
Thalipeeth - onions and coriander make for this dark colored roti which complemented the curries really well.

Jowar bhakri - something similar to a chapathi but made out of jowar, this needs to be savoured with pithla.

Desserts:
Kharvas - colostrum(milk secreted post parturition) pudding served with pistachio shavings, cardamom and saffron was the perfect ending to a soul satisfying meal. Pudding's consistency is noteworthy.

2631/- ended up as our total bill amount and I'm coming back here for sure to try out a lot more offerings from their kitchen.

Soon after giving us Chennaites a taste of Parsi cuisine, the proprietor Udhay launched the exclusive Maharashtrian restaurant – Meena Tai’s. When we were invited to Batlivala & Khanabhoy, we already got the essence of the yumminess Meena Tai is going to hold as it’s under the same management who has a great knowledge about their cuisines and knows what they’re upto. Knowing very little or almost nothing about the Maharashtrian cuisine except for the Vada Pav, I walked into the restaurant with an open mind and zero expectation (umm, not really because I knew Udhay will rock it, yet again).

From Main course, Aambaadichi Bhaaji and Saoji Machi Masala were damn good. Amongst desserts, only the Dudhi Halwa was yummy.

Quite a nice place with excellent service. I'm not sure if it's worth the price tag - but I had such a good experience that I'm gonna justify the price by saying that the quantity justifies it.
They gave us some fries and a truly droooooolicious green chilli and peanut chutney called teecha. I had this with EVERYTHING! Was literally the best thing I've tasted in ages! There was also a nice coconut and garlic dry chutney - but this is something I've had many times before, and certainly didn't have the heat of the teecha.
We started with the aam panna - which was ok ok, I could taste the jaggery, but not the sourness of the raw mango, which was sad.
Then they got us the sabudana vada - omg! Loved it! They have some yoghurt chutney, but I had this with teecha =D
The vada was really good, not at all oily - I'm almost tempted to believe it was made in an air-fryer - which would be AWESOME!
We ordered the bhareli vangi (stuffed brinjal) which was good (lots of peanuts!)
Sadly the poli (roti, they told us) was really really bad. This was the worst thing about the whole meal. Mine was undercooked and both were crunchy instead of soft. I really feel that these need a whole lot of improvement.
We also ordered amti - which was more like vetthakozhambu (Tamil influence?!) I didn't like it, and it didn't gel well with the rest of the meal.
We ordered the tondli rice - which was like vangi bhaat except with tondli. It was YUM! I highly recommend it.
We ended the meal with Piyush - I quite liked it, but again it wasn't as sour as I've had before.
You should certainly visit this place, especially for something different and delicious. The menu has a lot of variety and I'm certainly gonna go back to try more.

This place is a pure OMG for me. I'm a hard core Marathi and a big foodie and I wonder how this place slipped my restaurant list for 5 years in Chennai!

The ambience is realllllllyyy good with antique adkitta (nut crackers) hung over. There are other antiques too which I couldn't figure out. The place will give you a very vibrant traditional feeling. The soothing Marathi songs and samvaad playing in the background will make one feel home :) The menu items are straight from the households of Maharashtra breaking all misnomers that we only eat misal pav, vadapav, pav bhaji and poha. Every single item in the menu looks delicious and it'll surely give you the closest to Maharashtra feeling in Chennai.

We were two of us and we order kairich panah (raw mango juice with jaggery and chilly powder dressing). It was mind blowing! We later ordered pithla (my all time favourite), poli, and bhakari. Sadly, the pithla wasn't great at all. Marathi food is supposed to be chavishta (flavours of all masala should be retained) and tikhat (spicy). The pithla was very bland, with INFINITE garlic. Honestly, I can make better pithla than that. Rest everything was bang on.

Over the side they'll give you papad, garlic dry chutney powder, and thecha (spicy chilly paste with coriander, etc).

Quantity of food : 4/5 (The pithla was little in quantity)
Quality : 3.5/5 (-1.5 for the infinite garlic and spice-less pithla)
Ambience : 5/5 (Perfect!)
Service : 5/5 (The waiters are too sweet. You'll be attended by more than one waiter and they'll make you feel very special)
Location : 4/5 (The location is good but the coordinates on zomato are slightly incorrect. I'll request the managers to look into it)
Value for money : 4/5 (-1 purely for pithla)

I've got to try non veg here on my next visit.

This was the first tine i went to Meena Tai's. It was perhaps the first time that we went out late for dinner. My maternal grandmother, though not maharashtrian, has grown up in that culture. My family and i were pretty excited because this was the first time i have tasted such good maharashtrian food in Chennai. Whatever little we ordered was yum. The only problem i had was with the Panhe. Which is supposed to be a very sour raw mango drink. But this felt like mango juice. The garlic chutney was another thing all together. It was delicious and i got addicted to it.
I am very happy with the service and the way they explained each dish in detail. The ambience was lovely. Very antique instruments were put up and a very typical marathi atmosphere was made.
I would love going back and trying some more stuff.

Smiling faces is what you notice first. Many if the dishes are like authentic ones which we have never heard about and healthy too. The meats were cooked really well. But being a South Indian not all my taste buds were satisfied. Well I won't complaint though

Meena Tai's is an authentic maharastrian speciality restaurant. The ambiance with its artifacts reminiscent of those of maharastra sets you into the milieu instantly. The place seem to be crowded during the weekends. We had to wait for fifteen minutes to get a table. The waiters here seem to be anankastic in that they arrange the tables with the mats, cutlery and bottles kept specifically. Even if you try to disturb this arrangement slightly unknowingly during the meal the anankastic waiters keep placing them in the positions they ought to be placed.

We tried Kombdi Surve Sukke for starters which is a chicken dish cooked with spicy green masala made of coconut and green chilies along with other spices. It was so very well cooked that the chicken pieces actually just melted in our mouth. The Green masala was also delicious though the green chilly flavour was stinging the mouth for a while later.

For the main course we ordered Pathare Prabhu Pulao and Nagpuri Kala Pulao. The Pathare Prabhu Pulao was mildly spicy with well cooked chicken pieces, served with egg and potato toppings. This one was very good when compared to the Nagpuri Kala Pulao which was blander. However both the pulaos had very good number of chicken and mutton pieces respectively which were all very well cooked and fleshy.

The most disappointing aspect of the dinner was the snail paced service. We spent nearly two hours for us to be served these three items. Even for them to bring the card machine for payment it took a solid fifteen minutes after couple of reminders. This much slow paced service is atrocious to put it mildly. One more problem was with a group of fellow diners who were so loud and laughing out loudly frequently for the rest of us to get annoyed of for which the people manning the restaurant had no control over even after being complained a couple of times.

The cost is expensive. Almost every item on the menu is Rs 299! Upwards. For just the three items, one starter and two mains, we shelled out Rs1300.

I have seen a steady surge in concept dining/big brands and also very unique cuisine testing waters in Chennai for quite a while now. Standing the test of time has definitely been a challenge for all players and I somehow feel (read : personal opinion) that not many of them have been fairly successful leading to early closure. I am a sure there are a lot of places one can think of as you read this. These genres of places get handpicked either special occasions and the patronage is often not sufficient to keep the show going.

Having grown up in Maharashtra, I'd definitely call it one of my personal favorite cuisines to pick and choose from and secondly, I love it for the amazing vegetarian options it has. I heard of Meena Tai's in Chennai and definitely wanted to go feast on some sabudana vada (my personal favorite). I made an impromptu dinner plan with my baby and a friend and booked a table. All of this was well done and I did ask upfront for a High chair (read : new place teething issues et all) and I was told they don't have one. Well this is something I couldn't really get my head around. Why would you not have one?? If not store brought, I think some places make something customized to match their upholstery. Either ways, I didn't make a mountain out of a molehill here and decided to overlook that as eating Maharashtrian food still topped my agenda for the evening.

Located in one of the upmarket areas of the city, they score very well in terms of reception/parking etc. We were the first ones for the evening and had the luxury of picking our table. The interiors are very impressive. Very minimalistic accents but they leave you feeling like you are in the living room of some palace. The walls are adorned with a few bronze artifacts and there is this shelf that houses jars of spices. Only I know how freaked out I was as I had a pint sized missile on the loose (read : my almost 2 year old was checking out the place). Very comfortable seating but it still needs to be seen how they want to handle kids since ones of the age as mine wouldn't sit down very easily ;)

The menu was absolutely one with no frills and I loved the lady on the cover. Everything here is medieval in looks. The art work, murals all of it. We were served some lentil wafers with the Tradtional sides of Ghee/Roasted Coconut/Green Chutney. Coconut is one of the staple ingredients of the Western Coast in India and I am personally not a fan of coconut in any form. Having said that, this one nailed it in terms of taste and the first dip into it made the wafers taste so good. The green chutney was spicy but worked very well for me.

We kicked off our meal with the drink order of Mattha(Buttermilk) and Nimboo Sharbat(Lemon Juice). Both of them were nothing out of the ordinary. The buttermilk is not spiced like how it is in Chennai. So if you set your mind to look a glass of buttermilk with chopped coriander etc, this might not be the one for you.

I ordered 2 starters – Sabudana(Sago) vada and Kothimbir Vada (Coriander vada).
While the sago vada was served with a coriander chutney, the Kothimbir vada was served with a chutney made of coconut & yoghurt. The sago vada's were hot and fresh. Sago has the ability to absorb in a lot of oil. Not sure how they pulled it off but this vada had no trace of oil at all. Zilch!! The Kothimbir vada were beautifully topped with white sesame seads and they did crumble a little. But the taste was spot on. I didn't like the taste of the chutney served along. So I had them as-is and they tasted just fine. My little one liked this too and so did Shabnam. We were a happy camper :)

For Main course, I let Shabnam do the talking and she ordered Bharli Vaangi. This is a very traditional gravy dish made with Brinjals and stuffing that has peanuts and Coconut. There is a version to this dish in TamilNadu & Andhra Pradhesh as far as I know. This dish in particular is known to be slightly sweet and not very tangy. So I wouldn't recommend this unless you know what you are in for. My 2 cents, if you think this is a random gravy or some side dish for pulao, then uh-oh moment awaits you. The pulva (Flavored rice with caramelized onions & spices) was super hot and mildly spiced. I liked it a lot. It was tempered with ghee and the aroma was kicking in every morsel. The portion was also pretty good. We had stuffed ourselves with so much of starters that we had a hard time finishing this one.

After a little bit of a lull over whether or not to order desserts (read : I don't eat sweets because I don't like them. Yeah you read this right), Shabnam ordered Kharvas. Since this is just not my forte, I waited for it to arrive. Neatly served in a small bowl, this was a cold dessert in a mild yellow color with saffron strewn all over. It was a creamy pudding and I will leave it at that since I am not good with desserts :)

The entire meal set us back by 1529/- I would safely put this in the VFM category as the service is highly personalized and the ambiance is also equally comforting. I would just love for them to come back with a high chair or some seating options for smaller folks just so it is easy to manage them

My first visit to a Maharashtrian restaurant was an aiddent. We reached the venue to dine at a parsi restaurant within the same building. However, based on a few people's recommendations, we decided to opt for Meena Tai, the only reason being it is slightly more vegetarian friendly. The restaurant located in Venus colony in a rather quaint and posh neighbourhoods of Chennai caught me by surprise. With no offence meant, I am surprised that people irrespective of who they are and where they live are going old school and willing to try traditional food.

The restaurant tastefully done is a small place with yellow coloured walls with green painted windows. Typical setting of a restaurant far from the city and may be we might find one similar in one of the beatiful towns across the state of Maharashtra. Unlike their Gujarati and Rajasthani brethrens, Marathis are widely known for their non vegetarian delicacies partly because of their coastal connect.

With enough assumptions made, we order food with ample help from the stewards who are dressed very similar to the dabbawalas of Mumbai. Some have shortened their names to not indicate south Indian sounding. Our orders included a sabudana vade, tomato saar, poli, tondli masale bhaat, limboo sarbat and sol kadhi.

The first to arrive were the drinks. The limboo sarbat is a nice refreshing drink and is indeed a lemonade but infused with cardamom and few other spices. It was so good that I asked for a repeat. The sol kadhi is very unique and native to Malvani cuisine and it is no surprise that Meena Tai serves them too. The flavours of coconut milk with kokum, garlic and chilli blended well. However I was informed by others that the sol kadhi should have tasted better and its colours slightly more pink.

The sabudana vada starter was very good. The sago and potato mashed croquettes was well made with minimal spices and not too oily. Crispy but subtle. It was served with a yoghurt dip which had traces of peanuts, two variants of chutneys including garlic (which I am not too fond of) & green chilli based and some ghee. The yoghurt could have been slightly thicker but indeed a great beginning.

The main course included the tondli masale bhaat. A very traditional Maharashtrian preparation with some gourds, cashews and raisins and mixed with some goda masala. It includes a blend of many different common spices and also includes coconut flakes and cassia buds. These are roasted in oil until they turn darker and then powdered. The final mixture seemed very similar to our south Indian puliodhare mix. Homely yet delicious.

The tomato saar was the accompaniment that was suggested to go along very well with the bhaat. Yeah, they were right. The tomato saar is a beautiful medley of tomatoes, coconut milk, curry leaves, red chillis, cumin and tempered with some ghee. Amazing flavours and very similar to our Rasam. Great combination. I definitely wish to emphasise that many of our south Indian delicacies including sambhar have its roots in Maharashtra and were brought to the south by some of Nayak rulers who settled in Tamil Nadu. Some of them have stayed back and some of their traditions have been imbibed by us, South Indians.

Overall, a traditional homely Maharashtrian food with minimal clutter and even minimal fanfare. The quantity is just right and prices are not steep either. Definitely worth a visit for its food, courteous staff and even more if you wish to try something new over the weekend without upsetting your stomach or your appetite.

It's been a long time since I reviewed (or atleast found a restaurant worthy of being dissed or being praised :D)
Me and my roommate wanted to try something really rustic and genuine and ended up at Meena Tai's on a lazy Thursday evening.

Now, my roommate is a pure-bred maharashtrian and comes from a family where food making has been passed on since generations. He is well equipped with all the age-old dishes and recipes in and around Mumbai and was knowledgeable on each and every item on that list (more on why this is important later)

I for one am a follower of the bandwagon. I know only the stuff which gets spread across. For instance, maharashtrian food to me is Street-oriented. I know only of the vadapavs, the pohaas and the cutting chais and not the items which actually symbolise ethnicity of aamchi Mumbai :D

Coming to the restaurant, the ambience is historic and very medieval. You get the feeling that u are seated in the 1700-1800s with everything surrounding you giving you that unsophisticated but elegant vibe.

Since I was a dunce, I let my roommate take over the menu and we started off with Sol kadhi for starting drinks and he suggested bhajniche wade for starters ( he ordered non veg but I'm reviewing only the veg items here)
The Sol kadhi was a cooler, perfect for the perennial Chennai evening breeze. Teased my taste buds with its unique taste.
Bhajniche wada is the oil fried kabab sort of wada which was good. Came with ghee, techa (chilly chutney, extremely red-hot) and sauce. My roommate told me that anything in Maharashtra can be had with techa and that it is almost a mandate side for any occasion. I mixed ghee with techa and ended up with a great side dish to the Wade.

Then came the aambadachi bhaaji with jowar and bajra bhakri. This was suggested by the well-informed waiter (who surprisingly was not a maharashtrian but atleast knew his menu in and out)

The aambadichi bhaaji was awesome. Aambadi leaves or gongura (for Telugu audience) is a one of its kind leafy veggie that I thought was unique only to Andhra (famous for their gongura pappu/gongura pachidi) The bhaaji had a mix of all dals and vegetables but they were semi-smashed. Had this unique texture and was tasty on the tongue. The jowar and bajra bhakri were the healthy supporting acts to finish of the main course.

We ended it with kharvas which was similar to rabdi. I love Rabdi so mathematically if A loves B and B looks and tastes like C, then A automatically loves C :P

Now, the reference. See when the bill came, we were a little stunned as it came up to 2500/- odd for 2. My roommate felt that it was way way overpriced because the dishes were very rustic and 'home-cookable' and did not think spending 2500/- on these dishes was worthy. (Nothing about the taste here, the food was very delicious) The restaurant, it's setup to bring about the originality of Mumbai in Chennai was novel (there's a small read-up also on the first page of the menu which clearly sets the tone of the restaurant and what these guys want to do) but then it ends being too corporate for the dishes. All these dishes are grandmom-generation and he felt that if he ever told his granny that he had spent 2500 to eat bhajniche Wade and bajra roti, she would scale him.
As an outsider, I felt the price was off by 700 odd. He felt the price was off by atleast 1300.
(He gave me this example- in the menu, u have sabudana vada which is charged at 199/- You get the same taste, same quantity for 70/- in Mumbai. Even if u travel 1200kms from Mumbai to Chennai to serve sabudana vada, u don't charge almost three times the price)

So overall,
Ambience and necessities- 4.3/5
Food and service- 4.7/5
Value for money-1.8/5
Overall- 3.6/5

Few weeks back, Le Foodies group got an invite (On the house ofc) to try out the food at Meena Tai’s, a swag new Maharashtrian restaurant that’s been opened at Alwarpet.
Surprisingly, for the first (and probably the last time), I arrived here first, well before the rest of the gang (OMG!)

Meena Tai is tastefully styled with a vintage decor, and paintings adoring the walls, you’re sure to get that nostalgic vintage feel when you visit the place.

The tables, windows, paint, lighting, even the props cupboard thrown in – Every single thing gives a vintage feel and a relaxed ambiance.

My command over the cuisines of India was something I felt proud of, then I got into the subcategories of North Indian Cuisine. That's when I realised that what I learnt is a drop in front of an ocean of information that's just waiting to be conquered. So while I was waiting for a prospect to quench my thirst (Pun intended) me and a couple of my foodie friends were invited to a meet at Meena Tai's restaurant. Another gang of friends who were lucky enough to try them before me gave quite a positive review and their Maharashtrian cuisine was something I was looking forward to try. Given below is my take on Meena Tai's Alwarpet.

Meena Tai's is located in Venus Colony, Alwarpet. It's next to Tangerine. There is ample car parking space and it's manned to help us with the parking effortlessly. Meena Tai's shares the building with another restaurant called Batlivala & Khanabhoy which specialises in Parsi cuisine. It is owned by the same management who will also be bringing our state's first Ethiopian restaurant to this venue soon. Meena Tai's is located at the ground floor.

It's ambience and decor is simple, minimalistic yet elegant and exquisite. They've renovated a house into a restaurant and fortunately they are distinctive as sections and not as rooms, in other words, it's just a long corridor and not a mazy puzzle. The old style carved dark wooden door is what I first noticed. They've coupled the furniture with the same colour which is in contrast with the yellow walls and blue lighted chandelier. The shelves and chest of drawers are given a tainted look to look old and they are visible distinct when compared to other furniture.

We were welcomed by the proprietor who was kind enough to sit through our dinner explaining each dish and the story behind the inception of Meena Tai's. We tried a plethora of items, with equal emphasis given to both veg and non veg. Given below is what we had and how it fared.

Drinks:-

* Limboo Sarbat: The classic Indianized lemonade with a Maharashtrian twist of cardamom infusion and piece of saffron. It was an invigorating drink that received thumbs up from us all.

* Mattha: This non salty yet sweeter version of the well known 'Chaas' was butttermilk with spices imbued. We loved this drink.

Salad:-

* Peruchi Dahyatli Koshimbir: I've heard of the Gajar Koshimbir which is a yogurt based salad made from carrots but using Guava (Peru), is an impeccable touch that leaves us with an ethereal feel.

* Papad Koshimbir: Another salad but this time it's a dry one with crunchy papads in them. Unfortunately this was way too salty and I wasn't able to cherish it's actual taste.

Vegetarian Starters:-

* Mini Matar Karanji: Almost every cuisine in the world have it's version of pastries, either sweet or savoury. Served with green chutney, this version has green peas and coconut as it's fillings. I really enjoyed it.

* Surnaache Kaap: Roughly translated into yam chips, think slices of yam are marinated and fried before being served again with green chutney. This was an interesting dish but it didn't satisfy my taste receptor cells as much as it did my brain cells.

* Sabudana Vade: Probably the best out of the veg starters, this dish contains potatoes and sago which gives it a soft yet chewy texture. This delicous yet mild tasting dish went really well with the peanut dip that was served.

Non-Vegetarian Starters

* Mutton Kanda Lasoon Masala: Apart from the word mutton and masala, I didn't get the rest of the name. What I did get was a healthy portion of this dish and I devoured it merrily. Though the meat was perfect, it couldn't match the taste of Saoji Mutton which was served as a mains. Succulent pieces of juicy mutton with the perfect amount of spices to give that kick, this dish is a sure winner.

* Malvani Kombdi Sukke: Super soft chicken chunks with masala, this dish must be the best of the non veg starters. The meat's quality was excellent.

* Chutney Che Paplet: Fillets of pomfret cooked with green chutney inbetween, it was a welcoming change to see a delicious fish after a while. Basa has ruined the tasebuds of restaurant going seafood lovers and dishes like these are a blessing in disguise. The meat was cooked to perfection. Found a few fish bones and hence got my plate replaced and the second one was just too perfect.

Mains:-

* Vaangyache Dahyatle Bhareet: Probably the most intriguing and alluring dish of the evening, this contains roasted eggplants on a yogurt dressing with a hint of peanuts. It is one of those sides that can be had on it's own. Been a while since I enjoyed a vegetarian dish so much and it's even more amusing that it's made from one of my least favourite veggies of all time, Eggplants.

* Kelphulachi Bhaaji: Made with banana blossoms, this dish wasn't as appealing as I expected to be.

* Saoji Mutton: Succulent pieces of juicy mutton with the perfect amount of spices to give that kick, this dish is a sure winner. It tasted way better than the Mutton Kanda Lasoon Masala which was served as a starter.

* Surmaiche Kaalvan: This dish apparently has it's origins from a royal kitchen. King fish pieces in a soupy gravy that has an intense flavour of garlic. Though the pieces were excellent, the gravy was too runny to have it with breads. A pulao, on the other hand, would be an excellent combination with this dish.

* Kolambi Bhaat: Rice and prawns cooked with their house special sauce is a delight to one's tongue. A bite into one of the prawns proved how fresh they were and the fiery yet flavoursome dish tasted heavenly.

* Nagpuri Vada Bhaat: This traditional Maharashtrian dish has steamed rice with lentil vadas, that are hand crushed on a grinder, sprinkled over the rice. Though I didn't really like it's taste, it did give the feel of trying something really authentic.

* Thalipeeth: This is a multigrain flatbread served with Thecha (Yet another Central Indian delicacy that's got peanuts and chillis). The bland-ish bread with the spicy Thecha is a dish worth trying.

* Jowar / Bajra Bhakri: These breads are just different to each other from the grains that go into making them. Jowar is Sorghum while Bajra is Pearl Millet. Their nutrient contents don't need an introduction and they make a perfect match with the Mutton Kanda Lasoon Masala.

Desserts:-

* Piyush: The last time I said this word, it was the name of a fellow student who was in kindergarten with me. While my limited knowledge on Hindi was having trouble, my taste buds were experiencing ecstasy. Shirkhand and Yogurt topped with nuts is the perfect dessert to satiate the cravings of a pure Indian sweet tooth. It was out of this world.

* Chirote: More of a flaky puff with sugar dusting, this crispy tasted great on its own. After a suggestion, tried it as a scoop to get some Piyush on it and savoured both together and it was euphoric.

Service was very friendly and personalised. It is the exact level of expertise one would expect in a fine dining restaurant. It was a pleasure to meet the proprietor, Mr. Uday who has spent a considerable amount of time with R & D to create this menu. His enthusiasm to pass over the knowledge is definitely commendable and is actually contagious.

I had an excellent time, trying out some amazing dishes with a wonderful group for company. Some dishes, especially (and surprisingly) the vegetarian dishes did astonish this hardcore carnivore. I'm sure to return back with my family and try a couple more of these dishes. This place is highly recommended for those who adore North Indian cuisine and for those who would love to try some specialities from a cuisine that we aren't accustomed to.

RATINGS BREAK UP:-
Location:- 3.5/5
Parking:- 4/5
Reception:- 4/5
Food:- 3.5/5
Customer Service:- 3.5/5
Ambience:- 3.5/5

The only news that I keep myself updated with are the newest restaurants in the city that has everyone going gaga about. So when I heard about this new venture which serves Maharashtrian cuisine I was excited. Sister chain of the Parsi restaurant ‘Batlivala and Khanaboy’ , Meena Tai has already been successful in creating a mark among Chennaiites within a matter of months. So I was beyond excited when I received an invite for this place from a friend. Mr. Udhay, the owner was with us throughout the meal, taking us through the world of Maharashtrian food.

A welcome addition to chennai is this maharashtrian place in Venus Colony. The food is good , parking is ample but the service is very poor . We went as a group of 8 and took 1.30 hours to get all of our food. The starters were very good , with the Sabudana bade and the Chicken being excellent. The main course was great especially the Brinjal curry and the Pitla. The thalipeeth, Vade and the Jowar Rotis were tasty but unfortunately served cold. The desserts were good . Definitely recommend for vegetarians , but service needs to improve

The recently opened Meena Tai’s was creating quite a wave among the foodies and when Gopinath Rajendran. was kind enough to take me along with him for an on the house meal I was excited.

Located in the quiet and posh Venus colony, Meena Tai’s shares the same building as Batlivala & Khanbhoy, another recently launched restaurant, which is in the first floor, while the former occupies the ground floor. Both run by the same management.

When renovation an old structure, people tend to go overboard with the interiors, but this place has been done with up with minimal details and has managed to retain the charm of the house that it once used to be. Decorative niches as shelves with fancy jars for display, an antique cupboard with beautiful carvings and a majestic old door with intricate details takes you back in time. Some of the artifacts they had installed dates back to a century.

As welcome drink, we were served Limboo Sarbat, lemonade with a subtle hint of cardamom and Mattha which is buttermilk, seasoned with spices. Both were very refreshing. Ideal for the peak summer we are all heading to. Next up we were served Peruchi Dahyati Koshimbir, a raita made with raw guavas. The bitterness of the guavas along with curd was not very appealing to my palate. The Papad Koshimbir which is crushed papad with onions and grated coconut was very tasty.

For starters we were served Mini Matar Karanji, something similar to samosas, with a crisp covering. The filling with peas had a lot of flavor. Loved it. Shallow fried slices of yam called Surnaache Kaap was also interesting. One of the dishes that I absolutely relished was the Chutney Che Paplet which is shallow fried fish slices stuffed with green chutney. The masalas used for the fish and the green chutney combination was just too good.

Moving on to the main course, the other dish I completely enjoyed was the Thallipeeth and Vaangyache Dahyatle Bhareet. The thallipeet is a multigrain roti, very thin, crispy and light. The Bhareet is somewhat like hummus when it comes to the texture and consistency but made from smoked brinjal and youghurt being the key indregients. The Saoji Mutton curry had a strong flavor and a slightly bitter after taste. Didn’t enjoy it much.

The Kolambi Bhaat is prawns cooked with rice and masala, which looks very close to biryani. The prawns were very tender. The Kelphulachi Bhaaji a dish made with banana blossoms is a dish recommended for vegetarians. The Surmaiche Kaalvan, a different type of fish curry, very light can be eaten as it is without any sides.

For desserts we had Piyush, a combination of Srikhand and yoghurt and Chirote, something like a puff pastry deep fried and dusted with icing sugar. When eaten together, it was so delicious, perfect end to our meal.

IN A NUTSHELL
A must visit restaurant to explore Maharashtrian flavours.
