After an morning cycle ride in Besant Nagar, I was in search of restaurant for breakfast. I was guided by my friend about Vishranthi. Place was in great buzz by the time I reached. Tiffen was amazing and service was good. Rates are little high but taste was too good

It has become an iconic reference place for Besant Nagar. I have my friends come down just for coffee every morning. Some for idly and sambar ( though I don't value the sambar so great like them).
I love pongal, vada, dosas and coffee here. I find the rates are expensive because of this store becoming a big brand altogether over the years
A small place tucked away from the maddening crowd of Besant nagar eateries, but a good and easy-on-the-pocket self service restaurant. It was takeaway many-a-time, but last week had the opportunity to eat at the restaurant. Nothing much to say in terms of ambience, it is all made by the food served.
Their sambar is to be specially mentioned and so is the sambar vada, most of the dishes are well prepared and quickly served.
Looking for a healthy south Indian breakfast option, this place should definitely b on ur list. Easy on the pocket, heavy on the stomach is how I can describe it. Just five minutes away from the beach, this place is a favourite among the localites. Is always buzzing with ppl. But one thing I noted, although its so crowdy.. the quality of the food is always good. Hope the increase area a bit cuz it's a bit congested.
I was brought to Vishranthi because my friend claimed that they had the best filter coffee in Chennai. I know coffee tastes are undoubtedly subjective, but I must say I was quite happy after the coffee.

Morning breakfast is good. Try their Pongal and vada. All chutneys tasted good. Sambar taste is decent. Not sure about the ambience as we ordered through swiggy.
I have living in Besant Nagar for past 13-15 years and place has improved so much.. older days vishranthi used to be a restaurant both non-ac and ac... now its just a single space with few table seatings and few tables where we need to stand and eat.. As a dosa lover i always go for their dosa which is great.. Pav bhajji is good.. i always order online through zomato for their panner butter masala and naan.. damn good.. Cant expect more from vishranthi..
One thing that astounds me about Vishranthi is the fact that the flavours have remained constant over the years. This was the first restaurant that I stepped into Besant Nagar for breakfast over 15 years ago, and it remains my first choice even now.
The restaurant does not tend to get claustrophobic though diners may feel it gets noisy at times.
Customers stepping in for their breakfast fix will not be disappointed since the Dosa, Idli and Pongal is delightfully flavoursome. The Chutney is rarely watery and quite substantial, the Sambar is soul food.
One of the best places to get filter coffee as well !
If you are in and around Besant Nagar, for decent breakfast and snacks this is the outlet you should look for. This is one busy place for swiggy. Self Service and normal ambience. The Food tastes are somewhat similar to what you have in Banglore. Have tried Sambar and curd vada multiple times, they are really good. But the prices are on the higher side, that too after GST they went on to another level of price hike.

Vishranthi is a smallish, simple down to earth eatery. At a walking distance from Besant Nagar beach this place is a quick stopover for a Coffee( freshly brewed South Indian Kaapi) , some delicious savoury snacks and much more.
What is really remarkable is the quality that is unfailing along with the consistency of the products. Their food tastes the same as it did many years ago.
Reasonable,clean and quick- It's a must stop when you visit Chennai.
I am totally in love with their sambar idily...i am n a situation that i have to order food every alternate day...so i do n this place hasn't let me down much...good south indian tiffin @ reasonable price

If there's ever a competition on who serves the best filter coffee in town, Vishranthi will be the piping hot winner! None of my visits to Bessy is complete, if I dont get to chug their filter coffee. Likewise, their sambar vadai and bonda vadai are exquisites, to be tried compulsorily! Topped with onions and hot tasty sambar, they are irresistible. Their dosas are also bigger in size compared to other restaurants.
Best things about Vishranthi:
1. Its situated at a vantage point in Bessy.
2. Their oh-so-awesome filter coffee.
3. Light on the pocket menu.
4. Fast service.
5. More quantity for lesser price.
Things I wish they would change:
1. Their serving plates. Its mostly in paper plates, which is a little inconvenient.
2. Their washroom is very dingy.
3. They can refurbish the tables and chairs. They look quite old and worn out.
4. Idlis can be fluffy and soft. The last time I had it, they were too hard.
There is an old-worldly charm about this place. Anytime you can walk-in and have a hearty meal with little to spare. That works for me!
This food joint is my default to binge on whenever I run out of money.Pocket-friendly self-service veg place of good rava idli, bondas with lip smacking chutneys. I also like the dosas they serve here. Probably one of the oldest restaurants in besant nagar, maintenance is on the lower side. Nevertheless, a good coffee is all you need here.

I have been going to Vishranthi since I was a kid and gone are the days where you sit inside the AC hall and dine in... now it's just a fast food so you pay and you stand and eat or a quick takeaway.I love the Pongal,Poori vada,cashew nut pulao and sambar rice.

Ideal for some quick south indian eats, especially breakfast. The consistency however, is cringeworthy; too good one day, sub-standard the other. More intent can help.
South Indian food at it's best! The Idly sambar, dosas, poori and vadas are lip smackingly good. Pricing is good and ambiance - not so great. It basically has a self service station where you need to give in your order, wait for a few minutes and take away your hot hot food :P

A great place to have quick vegetarian food in Besant nagar , it is easily locatable with its wide name board too. This place has been around for years and is quite popular with the locals. We have been here a few times and have made this review based on these visits across years.
The taste has almost been constant which is a good thing but the bad thing is that Vishranthi has not come up in level with their competitors. They can really do better if they improve the ambience , at least make it cleaner. Introducing new dishes won't harm them too.
Coming to food they serve , it's good , especially for the price they charge on them. They have a tasty sambar and pretty decent chutneys to go with their dosas. Their vadais and bondas are also available hot and nice even though they can be a little less oily. However our favorite is their chapathi/barotta with channa. We have also tried north indian tandoori dishes long back here and it was really find by then. Their coffee is good too.
It is a self-service place with some very ordinary eating atmosphere and that puts down most of the people at besant nagar. (This is not where you take your girlfriend after a beach date) But that being said , you can always get your money's worth if you are hungry with limited money in pocket.

My favourite breakfast joint in Besant Nagar. Take a long walk along the Theosophical society circuit and hit this place for breakfast.my picks - Pongal Vada and Plain Dosa (roast) with chutney. Their orange chutney is to die for :) Strictly avoid North Indian offerings by the evening. If it gets more expensive, it will lose its value for money status; however, it's great right now.
Really good place for a quick coffee, evening snack or morning breakfast. The place is buzzing on Sunday mornings. If you're looking for ambience, this is definitely not the place. Self service, paper plates, paper cups. I'd still recommend it since it's fast moving.
One of the best places for south Indian vegetarian. Once upon a time, they had a restaurant, but now they don't. It's an open fast food kind of place. There's no A/C. There are a few tables at which you can stand but I'd prefer to pack my food and leave, because in rush hour, it's going to be packed. I'd suggest everything on the menu. Literally. Everything. I've tried everything at least once and don't have any complaints about any of it. The filter coffee and medhu vada is a must though !
Vishranti is rather easy to find as it is located on a busy road in Besant Nagar. The first time I went there, I was famished. Hence, everything there smelt absolutely delicious.
Ambience: A few tables and the counter where you pick up your food.
Service: Prompt and everything served there is hot.
Food: No complaints whatsoever. We had Idlis, Sambar Vada and masala dosa, ending the meal with filter kaapi (my weakness). I loved the Sambar Vada. Took me back to my childhood where I used to have it when we were travelling.
Price: Very reasonable.

If you are not particular about ambiance, this is the place for you. Serves as a good alternative for pricey restaurants. The layout has changed over the years. But, the food remains the same. Pongal was awesome.
Too many people are here for take away. They don't have separate counter and as a result you get delayed.
A favorite tiffin center during childhood. This is a all day dine inn and take away veg place. Very nice ghee dosa, pav bhaji and their spl vada is very good
Had Sambar idli and veg oothapam from here..it was the Best Sambar idli this side of town..ambience isn't great so mostly a takeaway place unless you are OK to stand and eat. a couple of table-chairs are placed in a corner but usually full. Their Sambar is so good that I noticed a couple of ppl (bachelors I guess), who wer jus buying Sambar seperately..cost is very reasonable and the idlis are much better than the murugan idli ones!

I have a childhood connect with this hotel as my cousins lived in Bessy ... Twice a month we used to visit them . vishranthi was our fav veg spot .. It was air conditioned and they served good food .. Now it is more of a fast food and take away type restaurant but still the food tastes good .

A place to go if you want to taste the actual South Indian food. The dosas here are really crispy which is served with delicious sambar and chutney. Another must try out is the sambar vada. Once of the best places so far in Chennai.

I've been eating at this place for 12 years or so now. This is a landmark of Besant Nagar and you can find people from all walks of life at this place. Old grand parents, hip youngsters in shorts, men in ties, auto drivers, everyone basically. The best thing in this place is the 'Sambar'. So many years have passed and that one thing remains the same or sometimes even better. The food here is excellent and you cannot find it's equivalent. Once thing that bothers me though is it's cleanliness and lack of adequate staff causing long waits. If only they invested a little more in their appearance, I'd give this place a 5. Nevertheless, this place has it's genuine followers who've remained faithful to it.
Anything and everything here tastes good.. pocket friendly price.. The sambar goes good with everything that I take it with samosa.. The thought of vishranthi makes me hungry....
This is one of our personal favorites to have a quick snack or do a takeaway. I certainly miss their dining area and the Ac seating they used to offer.
No frills place with very quick service. It is a self service place and I am referring to their quick turn around time in giving you the food. The prices are very very cheap and the quantity is also very good.
Their idli and sambar is very good indeed ! I love their veg bonda too. I also love their samosas. Pretty big ones for the price.

One of the best places in the neighbourhood one can't miss to check out , the south Indian food tastes amazing and they are generous with the side dishes , worth the money . SAMBAR VADA is a must to check out .The service is quite poor though being self service .
This place has got lot of my childhood memories , I know this hotel for about 13 years . Till 2010 they had a air conditioned section which served noodles, fried rice , chaat and lot of other dishes after that due to some issues it was renovated and now it's only South Indian cuisine .best known for their tiffin varieties - idly, vada , chutney , sambar is their speciality . They also serve lunch rice varieties like sambhar rice , curd rice , tomato rice , lemon rice . When ever my mom is lazy to cook in the morning we get break fast from this place . The quality was their tiffin varieties has never changed a bit .

This place gives me fond memories of my initial days in Chennai. First time staying away from mom's food and the PG food being a total diaster all the time, Vishranthi was one of the soul saviour during those days. A walk from Vannandhurai to Vishranthi, pongal & sambhar or dosai & sambhar along with a coffee would keep me running till evening. There sambhar is so good, it goes well with anything and everything. Way back in 2006, they used to have ac dining too. First few days after the salary has been credited, we used to gorge upon the paneer butter masala and naan and fried rice and noodles. If its end of the month, it was dosai/chappathi :) Prices were/are so affordable.
After renovation its become full n full self service. I feel there's a bit of let down in the quality too. But I still like their sambhar. Crispy dosai with red chutney and sambhar is always great here. I've not seen this sambhar bonda anywhere else. As I told earlier, their sambhar goes well with everything. Getting the attention of the staff during crowded times is a test to ur patience. Most of the time they try n keep up to the speed.
Pocket-Friendly place. Self-Service mode here. All food items rates are below 100 which is best here. Had curd vada, Kesari, Oothappam, Dosa. All tastes good. I heard this place is famous for Morning Tiffin. I wish i have to taste their pongal and Vada. Don't miss out the Coffee. They offer really Good Coffee.

Hot Pongal and not so crisp vadai.... Tasty sambar and oh so crisp dosai... These are the tastes of Vishranti that I enjoyed many years back and got a chance to sample again. The taste has not changed much in the many years and quality remains great too. Very Happy.

As its name suggests, this place really is crazy for serving their food really quick fresh and hot.
They begin their business at 6 in the morning and shut down shop at 10 after.
My personal favorite is the Masala Dosa they provide along with sambar and chutney (Coconut and Onion).
They taste really good and its well balanced. You won't feel like eating after this heavy food. It's filling and has its perfect taste .
I would highly recommend the foodies to eat at this place when they get the time. I am sure you'll love to eat at this place.
Been there a couple of times .Even though the ambiance is not breathtaking their food is definitely worth holding your breath for . Their mini meals , SPL vada , poori are all so awesome . I have had breakfast here so many times, that I have lost count. Its a no frills place, standard menu, self service, non ac dining, hot south Indian tiffin. That's about it. I feel the pricing is quite expensive for what they offer though.

Unboubtedly the most underrated restaurant at bessi for south indian and north indian food! I grew up eating here since my early teens and i have seen them evolve. There is nothing called ambience in this restaurant and you just have chairs and tables put up for you to sit and eat their tasty food. I usually prefer getting a parcel and 70% of their customers are for parcel only.
Their flagship dishes are Gobi 65(best in the locality!!!), paneer butter masala, veg biriyani, onion uthappam and of course their Ghee sambar bonda!
One must try cult restaurant at bessi :)

Another Restaurant that has been here since Years, They have maintained in their service and quality of Food. The problem is they are still with the old day thing. A new upgrade should be done.Food, South Indian Restaurant, This says it. The Dosa , Idly , Vadai, Sambar rice , curd rice and the meals are the common and tasty ones here. They have variety of rice. Their Vadai is really good and crispy. Also Tea and Coffee are good.
Service, Self service it is. They bring the food to you within a minute or two. They are fast. Thats why taxi drivers prefer to eat in here.
Its very cheap and moderate rates for South Indian restaurant inside the City.
My favorite joint for South Indian breakfast lunch and dinner, quick meal and coffee joint...I have tried almost all the dishes right from idli dosa vada puri batura Chinese chats etc... I love this joint for mini meals which is awesome and u need to reach early otherwise u will miss it...must try fast food joint

But i heard that the taste, ambiance, management is not like few years back when the food used to taste brilliant and now its fading off.

Nestled in besant nagar's busy junction is this vibrant fast food center which serves quick tiffin and coffee. Pongal, upma and typical vadai are of good quality and quite safe for the tummy
Sambar rice never gets bored! The sambar vada and curd vada is delicious and I taste one of them every time I visit! The locality is another important thing that keeps me going back to vishranthi again n again! Gud place and price! Valuable for money! Self Service is the only thing that let's me down here!
The best tea and the best coffee I have ever tasted in life. No exaggeration.
After a very active early morning at the beach, my friend and I decided to have breakfast here. We ordered idlis for both of us. The idlis are beautifully soft and fresh and the chutneys and sambar are really, really good. Later I got coffee, while my friend got tea. The freshness and the flavors blew our minds away.
Writing about it makes me want to go there right away.

Actually surprised to find my breakfast hangout here 'cos its only a "cook" hotel (as in "Cook graamam" - to people not familiar with "Michael Madana Kama Rajan" and Tamil parlance, "Cook" means small in Tamil). Nice place for breakfast that I eat at everyday - breakfast, lunch or dinner (occassionally). It aint a place where you can take your family out to dine, but if you're in Besant Nagar, after tiring yourself and burning a few calories on the beach, you can visit this place if you're a simple veggie. You don't find so many many variety in the morning, but its good, harmless and doesn't put on weight.
Lunch is okay, but not as good as it was earlier - the Brinji was too good then, now its not.
Dinner has a good variety on the menu, but still not what you'd expect to find from a bigger restaurant. A good eat if you're hungry - and personally, I am morning noon and night. 3.5/5.

Good place for getting South Indian food when you are in a hurry. Its self-service but they have maintained a good quality over the years so its worth going !
Excellent for veg lovers. Lots of variety in veg. all the veg dishes are yummy. The pastas are so delicious. There is lot of main dishes, live counter of panyaram, jalebi and poori. They give u a Paan juice which is totally different. The starters was good with crispy corn, bonda, pakoda, chat items etc. The garlic bread is like a kutty pizza , so yummy. The two types of soups, corn and palak was yummy. I could nt say of anything tat was bad. As all items were really good including the deserts. I suggest this place for vegetarians. The ambiance and experience will be delightful.
We were a group of 11 and assumed that we were lucky to get a table for 11 at 8:30 PM on a Sunday night. Later did we know that the restaurant was not even occupied by a 50% . Had ordered Nachos , chilly babycorn and cheese fondue for starters , all were great . For the cheese fondue we were given bread and potato wedges , the wedges were not that good . Later for main course we option for pizza and pasta , size of pizza was very small while pasta was average . The pizza was really tasty , i had even poured some left over cheese from the fondue onto the pizza which made it like a Cheese overloaded pizza slice . Had a Jalpaan Pan Delight which is like my fav drink whenever i go to jalpaan and obviously at the end the gave their signature pan shot which was awesome as always . The only negative point was that the service was too too slow . But that does not mean we wont go again .

Affordable, North Indian vegetarian restaurant. Good for team outing. Starters are great. Service by Sagar and Saddam were exceptional. After dessert you will be served with mint milk shot. Your filling for the dinner.
Diverse buffet at affordable rate. They have less amount of starters but they have more variety in main course. Everyone should try the dessert section especially gulab Jamun, laukhi halwa.The taste in many of the dishes mediocre which can be improved. .This place should be visited if you are veg luver Semma place for dining experience.

Food lovers can hangout this place with effective buffet and special mocktails but main course in buffet is not upto the mark, especially gravy items. Timings are little short as 12 - 3 pm for lunch.

The food is too good, and nice ambience. Jalpaan serves pan as a drink after your meal, which is why it got its name ( Jal : water, paan - simply paan). I have been there for dinner and lunch buffet. You have a wide range of choices for starters, main course and desserts. North Indian/ Chinese and Italian cuisines are available and is definitely worth visiting.

I have visited Jalpaan few times over a period of 2 years. Each of my visit, Jalpaan has not disappointed me. Variety of items is quite many. There is no pressure on time, as the waiters doesn't push to finish faster when there is crowd.
Starters are served throughout the meal. Buffet spread is neat with good segregation of items. I would recommend this place for a quiet, enjoyable time with food with your loved ones.
Some may feel higher price, but that should be ok.
The food here is always delicious...the cheese naan is filled with cheese, and the other dishes are also too good.
The atmosphere is calm and the staff are well trained and very polite.
