Consistant quality, which is very important during these days of pandemic! Their appams are mouthwatering moist and slightly sweet. Food is not overspiced, and cooked well. I recommend their prawn fry and kerala chicken fry. Kappa was a tad over-cooked but should be good with gravies. Have had food delivered the times from here and was never disappointed!
Ordered Appam and Beef curry for breakfast. Never expected it to be this good. The appam had a slight sweet taste and nice texture to it. The beef was cooked with nice spice and the quantity was great. Just a drawback, the beef could have been cooked a bit more.
Wanted to try some kerala style food and wasn't disappointed. The crab masala and the prawn curry were nice, just the right spice level and the fish fry masala was nice and tasty. Over all satisfied with the food and prices.
Such a nice, traditional kerala food joint!
Loved the ambience, food and the warm service I got...
Thank you team, will sure come back for more...
I would run to any extreme corner to satisfy my Kerala food craving. Just Malayali things you know :P
Ok. Well, I have been constantly hearing about this restaurant, famous for their seafood variety. Sunday lunch well spent and sorted. Came here a lil late as we missed Kerala red rice for lunch. Its ok we had proper full course Kerala meals. Beef ularthiyathu was extraordinary. The meat was well cooked with the exquisitely blended spices and aroma. We also ordered Karimeen tava fry which was out of the world, esp the salt and spices were top notch. Altogether we enjoyed our Sunday meal in a homely "Nadan" style. I saw a lot of bad reviews in terms of customer service in the previous comments, but I think the management had really looked into this matter seriously. The customer service was really nice and they were welcoming. Good job Kumarakom.!! Definitely coming back here. :)
Good ambience and located in the heart of City and no difficulty in finding the location as located near to main road. Walkable distance from Gemini Flyover. Taste of seafood items are really awesome. Those who loves to eat beef, can come and have variety of dishes of beef here. Best restaurant for families. Main drawback is the waiting time in peak hours, especially 1-2 pm. Once I waited for more than 45 minutes. Overall rating is 4.7/5.0.
This is a usual go to place for us so I really do not want to be biased. Typical Kerala fare and consistent quality. Would gave rated a 3* becausr it has grown on be like home food for us given the repeat visits. But the Crab Chilly Fry gives enough reason for giving an extra star as it doesnt fail to delight me "every time".
loved the food & the warmth of this place just beside the spring hotel in nungambakkam . we will be back soon. it is pocket friendly too. decent place for hangout with friends and family.

Go to place when you have a Kerala cuisine dinner craving.
We ordered Kerala Chicken Curry, Kerala fried chicken and Parotas. The food was yum.
The Chicken Curry will have a slight coconut after taste which I really like. The Fried chicken was a bit too dry but it tasted good.
Have tried out the meals from this place. Good place to be for Kerala cuisine and meals are really good. Also, as all Kerala restaurants, they serve beef in all it's glory and all the works. The ambience is quite nice. The service could be better.
For the last two days I had my dinner here. The freshness of salad ,the exact cooked veggies in pulau and good combination of spices in Dal fry made me go the second time. The next day Kerala chicken highly recommended by the staff really came up to the mark of excellence with the taste of curry leaves in the gravy and juicy chicken pieces. The staff was friendly and prompt in service.A must try place.
Authentic Kerala food, this place is always overbooked but waiting makes it worth it. I love their Chilli non veg starters and typical Kerala mutton curry with rice and parotta. One of the best places in Chennai to get Kerala cuisine unless you want to travel all the way to Kerala for that. If you crave it you go for it no second thoughts.
Satisfied with the food. Good service. Good to dine with family. Steamed rice with malabar chicken curry is most recommended. Suggested for malayalees in Chennai.
Our Kerala food craving landed us to this place for dinner. We had parotta, beef roast, palappam, chicken roast and chapati. Food was too good, satisfied 😍. Happy with the service too, the guy was giving attention and was very polite.
My rating:
Food:4/5
Ambience:4/5
Service:4/5
The best Kerala cuisine in Chennai undoubtedly. The mere thought about the food in this place makes me drool. 🙈
It's a restaurant and not a cafe and it's suitable for having great food. It's usually rushy because of the huge demand it has amongst the masses.
Superb place to relax and Dine with family. You will sense the Malabar touch in every dish. Do try Beef curry which will be mouthwatering. Price is nominal for the quantity and quality you pay for.
Been here
Restaurant has a classy ambience with a wooden interior n warm lights.
Quite comfortable for dining.
Service from staff was good.
Tried no of dishes,
Chicken biriyani
Kappa
Puttu
Kadala curry
Karimeen polichathu
Appam
Beef roast
Biriyani was good but less quantity and single chicken piece for such high rate.
Kappa was good
Puttu was good
Kadala curry had a home made feel
Karimeen polichathu is one of the finest we can get in chennai
Appam was so sweet pluffy and delicious
Beef roast was good.
They have great beef. Kerala meals is okay-ish. It is unlimited. The curries you get with the meals weren't really good. Is pretty crowded but they don't take a lot of time.👍 Ambience is good. Would definitely go there again.
Good restaurant
Served well....
Good food
Good presence
Nice taste......
Nice ambience......
Loved.....
Enjoyed......
Everyone should visit this place
Always liked this place as a reasonable authentic mallu joint. Pales in comparison to taste when compared to Kalpakka but this place is a proper restaurant in case you want to sit and eat. beef and fish is good here but now a bit pricy and portions have started getting smaller. Go once for the feel.
Met my college friends after a long time. They were staying at the spring hotel and we wanted to go for dinner to some good place nearby. I suggested Kumarakom and I was happy with the decision. Ordered all my favourite dishes like Beef fry, Mutton stew, Beef Varutharacha curry, Appam, Parotta, iddiyappam, Kadala curry etc. My friends loved the food. The restaurant is quite spacious and has a homely feel to it. Service was very prompt as well.
A good place to have Kerala food . Theirs soup was good even their chicken was good . Their biriyani was alone so bad . Their their fish it tastes amazing .
Its been quite a while since my last review at ZOMATO and i have been looking forward to going to some place that has restaurants that can be reviewed via ZOMATO (where i live in, Thanjavur, hardly any restaurant can be reviewed via ZOMATO). Well anyways, this weekend i visited my friend at chennai and he wanted to surprise me for lunch and he took me to the so called "Kumarakom" restaurant. And believe me when i say this, the place is real good. To start with, the atmosphere is quite calm even though its located in the a part of the city where traffic and noise can literally cause your head to explode, but inside those beautiful glass walls that faced the doors, i had a really good time catching a glance at the city traffic without the relatively deafening sound of it. the entrance gives us the classic experience of visiting some ancestral house in Kerala, followed by the simple wall paintings that reminded me of my land, all together created an ambiance, which was half the comfort needed for a peaceful eating if you ask me. We were greeted by waiters quite soon enough, who presented the menu cards, which literally flowed of the classic Kerala cuisine. I was in fact astonished to see quite an array of dishes, the ones that i normally have at home, the ones that could easily go wrong and i was puzzled about what to order. Finally we ordered the one thing that he actually brought me there for, the kerala meals. my friend insisted we tried those coz, he assured that they served one of the best kerala style meals in the whole of chennai, and yes, it was indeed a pleaser to the palate. it reminded me quite a lot about home, the gravies and the side dishes were good too. interesting thing is that they switch the side dishes daily and i was lucky enough to get my most preferred combination of the traditional "aviyal and payaru (peas) thoran". plus to top the side dish plate, they served the classic "chammandhi" along with "pavakka (bittergourd) thoran". im not a big fan of bitter gourds, but the dish they served was not too bitter that i actually finished it and got a second round of the same. for a typical meals, they are ready to serve you as much as you want and to the fulfillment of your minds, and they do that without any hesitation and with minimum possible time delay. the waiters and the table boys were very much cooperative in that aspect and they saw to it that the customer was at ease, one thing i really liked about that place. even the slightest delay pointed out was attended to and was rectified at hand which is actually praiseworthy. now moving on the gravies that we ordered that day, the waiter suggested that we had "varutharacha chicken curry", which we decided to try happily and i ordered another dish, which im not sure whether to mention or not on account of the recent events happening here regarding "what food the people should have?", well anyways the chicken gravy was mind-blowing. packed with flavor the only thing defect i could find was the seemingly insufficient quantity for the price they demand, it was the only drawback of the dish. it was otherwise a splendid gravy, the chicken cooked well and yet again my i am compelled to mention that the gravy itself was splendid. the other dish that we ordered was an, literally watered my eyes. the meat was seasoned beautifully, fried to perfection and quantity was also sufficient, in fact, i was really happy to have had something like that and it made me very happy, the kind of happiness in get when i dine at home, ah, amidst the hustle and bustle of the ever growing traffic, for a few moments i went back to my happy place. the dish was so good that i ordered another plate and i ate to my hearts content. i tried everything they offered. the only difficulty i faced was that i couldnt try out any fish menus even though i learned that they had a very strong menu for that too. i was too full that i had no space for dessert or as we call it "payasam" which i had to refuse with a heavy heart. on a whole, i would ask any foodie who is in love with south indian cuisine to try out this wonderful place not just for the food alone, but for the complete package. im most certain that you will not be disappointed when you walk down those steps after paying that bill, which also is reasonable for the wonderful time you had there. i am happy that i went there with my friend. :) happy and contended.
Bon appetit! Kumarakom is one of the restaurants in the city which can make the Malalyalis feel home. The food as well as the ambience is quite decent here but the cost is on the higher side. I feel better whenever I visit either their Anna Nagar or Porur branches (in terms of the food and the experience). Coming to the food, their veg meals with Kerala rice tastes good and the Karimeen Pollichathu was average. It can be one of your go to options if you are in the sorrounding and craving for some Kerala food .
Amazing kerala food... although little disappointed that they didn't have boiled tapioca (kappa) my fav :/ ... karimeen polichathu is my favourite there. Great biriyani... would love to visit again ... and again 😉
Good place to feed your "Kerala" tastebuds!!!
Restaurant offers a good variety of Kerala cuisine. Taste feels close to "authentic". Fish items are good. Karimeen Pollichathu and Prawns are few of the items to try. One must be comfortable with spicy food, if the restaurant menu has to be enjoyed.
Decent ambience, good serving staff, quick service and the location of the restaurant, adds positiveness to one's experience at Kumarakom.
The food was great
Got a biriyani and a palak paneer
The paneer though was not all that great
Whereas the biriyani was very exquisite
We ordered a lime soda which was top notch as well
Food is good.. if u want to try the Kerala dishes this is obviously the one... I'm a big fan of the veg meal and duck roast.. yum yum.. visited the one in kodambakkam highroad outlet only.. no first hand experience over anna nagar branch
I like kumarakom nungambakkam for Kerala food
I am a regular visitor of annanagar kumarakom , here food items are very tasty than the one in annanagar,
I came here for a group lunch .most of my friends are Tamil but they suggested this restaurant for lunch . very busy but they give as good service .very good food .
We like Malabar fish curry ,meals, kerala special chicken biriyani, soft Kerala porotta, beef fry,f ish vattichathu etc......
All these are good but karimeen pollichathu was not there . karimeen is the special in kumarakom, they give ayala fry .that also good
The last Kerala special payasam they served that is delicious,i take one parcel,
Good service...
Good food.....
Good Kerala restaurant in nungambakkam .l like the Kerala biriyani and real Kerala style beef fry . Malabar fish curry and meals also very tasty .I will visit this restaurant again .
Finest taste.. The hotel welcomes you with the feel of kerala .. Food was upto the mark .. Price is worthy.. There are many must try dishes ..
Kumarakom is always a go to place for lunch....!! Their Veg Meals is the hit if the town...!! But sometimes i feel that they dont reach the level of their own branch in Anna Nagar...!! But Kumarakom is always a thumbs up for a lunch or even dinner..!!
Beef and Fish items are a must try...!!
A wonderful place for people Who are looking for Kerala cuisine. The service is decent and time for the order is pretty good.A pocket friendly place to eat delicious Kerala food.
6 of my friends dropped in for a weekend Lunch. This is my first visit to this location of Kumarakom before which I have visited Velechery where the food , service were very satisfactory.
Located on the Kodambakkam high road , this place can be easily located. The setup , service , parking needs much improvement than the one at velacherry. Food and the cost were Satisfying.
Setup and ambiance - easy to locate , interiors and also the utensils used should be better, even better they change them. Lighting and ambiance is normal. - 3/5
Service - After the order the time consumed for the food to reach the table is less than 15 minutes, the server gave us options of the food , for water they took a lot of time to fill it every time. 4/5
Food - Ordered Kerala rice with Prawn masala , KariMeen pollichathu , Beef Curry. The food was great. Both quality and taste were not compromised. Quantity is less that satisfying. 4/5
Parking - This is the worst part, For 2 wheelers they had no parking facilities during the day we went(the security informed the parking is not available for the day) myself along with my friends parked our bikes outside where there are places available. 2/5
Cost - Definitely satisfying for the food they provide !
Authentic costal kerala food @kumarakom
An assuming simple resturant but great food awaiting you at this outlet. Although I was on my own for a simple single meal...this was near the hotel and proved to be a good choice.
The lovely lake fish Grilled and spiced called the KM pollk..hope I have that right wrapped in a banana leaf was yummy. With bone though so be careful. The lovely appams was ordered with veg kadala curry which is like a rich lentil gravy which was super yumm as well.
Defintly will be back to sample the Prawn and curry masala gravies
Very well-priced. Food for 1: Rs 500 to 600
I really love Kerala style food and so does my partner, so we went to this restaurant while in Chennai, based on the reviews, and I have to say it was very good, menu was great, my starter was OK. I cant think of the name of it, my partner's starter was tasty though, the mains where very good, packed with chili and other flavors to it, added at excellent portion as required. The dessert did well and gave a nice finishing to what I can call a great dining experience.
Have been here on the eve of ONAM.. The best day to be here in the city ! !
Onam sandhya it was and heavy crowd outside the restaurant itself said how apt the place is to be for a Kerala-special lunch.. Went with a Malayali friend of mine to know about every dish that is being served ;)
Right from the Kerala rice (reddish, bit thicker than the regular rice), the different curries (cooked in coconut oil), different pickles and chutneys (ginger, mango-pulp, one pink color chutney), each dish had its own flavour and was worth the money spent for the occasion. Though being crowded heavily, the waiters served well and made sure that every customer is equally taken care of.
They also served 2 kinds of desserts at the end to give a good finish to the heavy meal we had :)
Taste - 4.5/5
Ambiance - 4/5 (crowded place makes it very noisy)
Service - 5/5
Value for money - 4/5
Arrived two hours early for dinner (hunger!) and was met with friendly service and excellent food. Really well set up restaurant.
Food was very tasty and literally left plate empty, very good value also.
Don't hesitate - would recommend and will be there again to enjoy the very same friendly service and excellent food. Thank you Kumarakom.
We stayed in a hotel across the street, and saw Kumarakom every day we ventured out. We decided to go there on our last night as a treat. The food was very very good, the service was wonderful, excellent and wonderful staff. For all those who like naadan Kerala food, I would HIGHLY recommend.
Had a lovely meal here in March. Food and service were excellent. Tables were very close together , so it was difficult to have a private conversation, almost had to whisper. I don't know if there is a larger room, but a group of 6+ would take over the whole room on the ground floor if they were in anyway loud!
I would highly recommend this place to any South Indian food lovers out there please be aware that it is spicy not like many others that tone down the spices dramatically for their clientele. I am a spice lover Keralite and Continental are my favorites and if I lived near the Kumarakom I would easily be tempted to become a regular. They have everything right in this establishment from ambiance to service I highly recommend and would return.
Off day , no kid at home , too lazy to cook , too lazy to order out (if you do it as often as i do) . Headed for kumarakom , after checking with a friend on kerala places close by , which would have meals for the Mrs. and Seafood for me . Ideally , would have loved to have this in it's authentic backwaters on the other side of the country , owing to Chennai's heat , but had to settle for one i could just drive to , rather than go on a boat ride (skipping the inappropriate #chennaifloods reference :) ) Checked for the timings of the restaurant and they said they would close kitchen by 3-3:30 p.m. and the restaurant itself by 4 p.m. Skipped anna nagar and headed to Nungambakkam one , which seemed to have two on the same road , the erstwhile kudumbam and the original kumarakom .First thing you notice is , the place is bigger than what you see through the looking glass outside . Second thing you notice is the decor has nothing to do with Kerala but has egypt written all over it , atleast ancient egypt . What would have been awesome is having waitresses dressed as cleopatra , especially with that fringe, but not the case !!! A kuzhipinnal atleast ??? Sadly not here !!!Checked for veg meals and opted for the kinda rice too and moved over to the seafood side . Checked they had karimeen pollichadhu , and they did , and it was noted down with the name and a "250" marked next to it . Initially thought it was the pricing of it , but guess it was the weight . Ordered a gopi 65 starter as well while we waited for the veg meal . For my main course i stuck to minimal (read less carbs) so just asked for their best prawns semi gravy and a kerala parotta . Though i am not a fan of parottas (fan of paranthas , yes ) something about the fluffy kerala parottas that makes it easy on the eyes , though not on the tummy !!!
I went to the Kumarakom today for my Birthday, I was there in early December & had a great feed in a great atmosphere & delighted to say yet again that the food is genuinely of the highest standard, service was great, and then my desert came out while the staff sang happy birthday to me can't wait to go back
Working and living in Chennai has many benefits but the most delicious of all the city attractions has to be the darling Kumarakom on Nungambakkam and some other spots for its wonderful food and most friendly staff . As a long time non-vegetarian , I can find no faults in their menu which has very fine dishes and can confirm that I am addicted to their amazing sea food Karimeen pollichathu which is the perfect reward after cycling around town in the hail rain and wind ...even in the best of days . Cant wait till my next chance to visit
We were welcomed cheerfully. The lunch menu is limited but there was something for each of us. Two had starters - one netholi fry and one dragon chicken, both beautifully presented, and from the bread menu we all had aloo parantha. For mains two of us had chemeen roast and the other two had prawns. They came presented like works of art, and I can say the chemeen was melting whilst being full of flavour and texture. Delicious! I then had the passion fruit juice. The quality of all the ingredients was second to none all through the meal.

The go to place for hearty mallu food.
Whenever you walk in the place is full of people , and almost all of them are malayalees.
The ambience is nice, has a Kerala feel to it. The service is pretty prompt and its nice to see that some know Malayalam, so speaking to them in Malayalam is a bonus point for me.
Coming to the food. There's really no point in ordering anything other than keralite naadan food out here , because ordering something else would be a waste of time.
The naadan food out here is very good and especially their beef (one of the main reasons I even come here).
I ordered for Malabar parotta, a karimeen pollichathu and a beef ularthiyathu.
It was brilliant. Beef was soft and full of spice , with those coconut pieces in the ularthiyathu , it was complete. He karimeen pollichathu was soft, full of spice and fresh. The parotta was as usual , very good.
The food was decently priced and certainly filled my stomach for sure.
My wife and I enjoyed a great lunch here on a dreary day in Chennai. This restaurant is tucked in the city premises. It is beautifully decorated, and the staff make it feel like a very warm and inviting venue. However, the best part was the food! Beef masala and mutton pepper fry. It was a perfect rainy day meal and the payasam was delicious. Highly recommend!
The service, incidentally, was both professional and friendly - we had a few queries and requests and all were met positively. The staff are obviously well trained as to the food they are serving, and if they don't know the answer, they will go and ask - well done! Nor were we hurried along at all - our booking was for 1 p.m. and we left, very reluctantly - mainly due to the traffic situation - at about 4 p.m. I'll be back as soon as possible!
If you hear over and over again about this restaurant and you want to give it a try, rest assure you will not be disappointed.
The attention to detail of the staff was most surprisingly, as these days is hard to encounter such pleasant people.
We had a four course meal and it was very tasty and well presented.
Balanced portions, the serving time was just perfect.
KUMARKOM
DATE OF VISIT : 3rd July 2016
OVERVIEW : Kumarkom is the place to get some great Kerala food in Chennai, like the Kappa, Aapam, Fish curries and more.
The "GOOD"s : -The restaurant offers a wide range of Kerala food.
-Service was fast.
My view : Give it a try, not so hard on the pocket.
Beautiful restaurant with good food. We get sea food and also Kerala food. Also boiled rice. We had ordered Veg meals and fish curry meals which was good. Karimeen banana leaf fry too tasted fresh and tasty.
I loved the food and nature around kumarakom resturant which I enjoyed a lot. I just tried few dishes of them I loved it which are very different with their own style of making using coconut oil and coconut milk, which gives the dishes a unique taste. There service was too good and prices are very reasonable.
Probably one of the oldest authentic Kerala cuisine foods. Proper seating and ample space available even if you are a big group. Prompt service was good to have even after the place was packed for weekend lunch.
Definitely try the Kerala meals and fried🍤
My preferred restaurant for authentic Kerala style meals and Kari meen, Kappa + Fish Curry. This time it was less crowded. The service was perfect as always. Biriyani was slightly spicy due to unusual mix of cloves. Ada pradhaman was amazing. Fantastic Kari Meen. Beef was👌👌👌.
I gone first time to the place . I had meals there, not ordered for fish fry as it was not looked like authentic keral style. Meals were very much reasonable price as you will not get a meals for 100 with ac and so hygienic place . But find only one concern that they not provide extra curry of meals as it's a limited meal. Even though they given to us, but then also we should have a option or getting more veg side dishes included in meals . But all together a good place to have your meals .yes there omelette was also good . Will update if will have anything more
Food tasted amazing, try out their Kappa biriyani. It's really good.
The rooms are spacious and well ventilated; Sleep infrastructure (mattresses, linens, covers, styles) are high quality, bathrooms include satisfying "rainfall" shower-head, staff are attentive and efficient, there is an easily operated safe in the room for your valuables, Breakfast inclusive reservations are well worth it as the first meal of the day is high quality and includes a wide range of items.
If someone want the taste of homemade food this would be a good recommendation. The food us really tasty and the atmosphere too. Good for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. I loved the taste of the food very much.
Authentic Kerala restaurant.
I tried fish meals they have option for both white rice and Kerala rice.
Taste is good for reasonable price. The variety provided with meals is more of Kerala cuisine if you looking for spicy food this is not place for it.
Fish curry had two pieces in it. Starters and fry need to ordered separately.
Kumarakom The Restaurant in Kerala offers a delightful culinary journey through authentic Kerala flavors. The ambiance captures the essence of the region, enhancing the overall dining experience. The menu showcases a diverse range of traditional dishes, and the use of fresh, local ingredients adds a genuine touch to each preparation. The staff's warm hospitality further elevates the dining experience. A must-visit for those seeking an immersive taste of Kerala's rich culinary heritage.
