MAPLAI has remained a pioneer in serving quality South Indian food for a long time. We stopped by the Neelangarai outlet for lunch.
We started off with Rosemilk and Naval Palam sarbath. The rose milk has a thick and creamy base while the naval sarbath has a mild vanilla like flavor both of the drinks are foolproof and complemented my lunch choices.
The complimentary Vadams with the Karuvepillai mayo was amazing.
For starters we choose the legendary 1)Mutton Kair katti gola, 2)mutta kalakki, 3)chinna vengayan mutton roast, 4)Karuvepillai mizhagu Kozhi and 5)fish finger.
The fish finger and kola urundai are constants here but it was the first time I tired the mizhagu Kozhi and chinna vengayan mutton roast both of them had such a unique and rich flavor. The chinna vengayan mutton went really well with coin parotta.
For mains we tried the 6)prawn thalaserry Briyani, I usually stick to chicken Briyani. But this prawn Briyani was spectacular, topped with a nuts and resins the masala is supposed to be mixed. Overall this is a must try dish.
For dessert we had 7)Coconut souffle and 8)brownie sundae both of them were spectacular as ever.

Had visited Maplai in Neelankarai with my friends. It was a weekday and we reserved our table for a 1 pm slot. The person who served us was Vijay. We went by his suggestion and orderes the kola urundai, Chicken ka thakali, guntur prawns and liver fry for starters. All starter were very nice. As for maon course we ordered Chicken Kizhi Barotta, Kori Rotti and mutton biriyani. The kizhi barotta was wrapped in banana leaf and tasted different and nice. The kori rotti was crispy and taated great with the accompanied spicy gravy. The biriyani made with seeraga samba rice was vsdy good. To finish our lunch off we had naval sharbath, kadupattimisu and falooda. End of the day it was good food and time well spent with friends. I would definitely visit again with family...
Love the new items added to the menu - especially the nei podi kozhi varuval and guntur prawn. Their parotta, kola Urundai and tiramisu remain my favorites. They have reduced the quantity if the starters and their prices which I really appreciate. This way one gets to try different starters and wastage can be avoided too. One more thing I always appreciate about Maplai is how authentic and unique each masala taste. Every dish has it's distinct taste that lingers fir a long time. A definite must try place for south indian food.
We walked in by 1500 hours for lunch. We were a group of seven and were pleasantly surprised to be graciously welcomed instead of being forewarned that the lunch service was about to close.
We had Veg & Non Veg Meals, Chicken Biryani, Vanjaram Fish Fry and Guntur Brain Fry. Even the folks who had Veg food relished their meal and especially enjoyed the Vazhapoo Kola. The Kalakki was another super hit and made succulently. It was a disappointment that the Mutton Biryani that Maplai is famous for, was over. The service was stupendous without being overbearing and we had to appreciate the steward for being so courteous.

Well, the first thing that will come to my mind when I hear about this restaurant is "Flavours". The food is cooked with perfect amount of spices and the best ingredients, to maintain the quality and the taste. Rather than adding high amount of spices and to give more flavours and just a hot taste, they do the preparation really so well. The food here will definitely make one feel that it is prepared at home and not at any restaurant. They claim that they do not add ajino moto and other artificial food substances. They use the best natural oils and spices to cook, which gives the food an extra natural punch. I had their best food varieties and I would definitely recommend some of them.
Nei Podi Kozhi Varuval - This was so damn good, boneless chicken wrapped in a form of a mini taco, with a good amount of Desi Ghee drizzled with the best spicy podi on the top.
Mutton Liver fry - This was really good. Spicy, aromatic, flavourful and no raw smell. This really tasted so good and the amount of oil used was perfect balancing the taste and richness.
Guntur Prawns - Spicy and delicious, perfectly cooked and it is not much oily as well. Perfect sized prawns have been used, so that they pull in all the flavours while being cooked.
Naaval Sarbath - Well this really was outstanding, the mild flavour of blueberries and the rich milk content topped with basil seeds. This was a showstopper to me personally.
Coconut Souffle - The tender creamy and low sugary dessert. It just flows inside so smoothly, the best way to end the meal.
Each of the dish I tried here had it own unique taste and flavours doing justice to the price. The quantity of the food is perfect, not too much nor too less. I would definitely visit this place again sometime soon to try more of their varieties.

Ever since I tried their Maplai Virundhu at their Nungambakkam branch, I have immense love for their food. Maplai is a well known place for serving regional delicacies. My friend and I visited their Neelangarai branch recently.
We started with appetisers - Chinna Vengayam Mutton Roast, Mutton Liver fry and Nei Podi Kozhi Varuval. The āChinna Vengayam Mutton Roastā had small, tender pieces of mutton tossed with shallots and spices, it had a perfect pack of flavours and not too spicy. āMutton Liver Fryā - I am not really a fan of livers, so I didnāt try it much, but my friend loved it. āNei Podi Kozhi Varuvalā was my favourite dish of all, it was brilliant and thoughtful, itās basically chicken enclosed with sliced potato and coated with spicy nei podi. We also tried 3 beverages - Maplai Rose Milk, Naval Sarbath and Kulukki Sarbath, my favourite was the Rose Milk, which I loved so much that we ordered one more.
For the Main Course we tried, Kori Rotti, Idiyappam and Chicken Kizhi Barotta. āKori Rottiā is a very unique dish, not something you would find everywhere. It looks similar to crispy dosa pieces but tastes a bit different. Itās best enjoyed by pouring chicken gravy over it, which is served along the Rotti. The āIdiyappamā was super delicate and went great with the delicious gravy that was served with the Kori Rotti. āChicken Kizhi Barottaā was my favourite from this course, it is Minced Barotta soaked in chicken gravy which is wrapped and cooked further. Its not just how it is presented but also the taste is absolutely amazing. It is one of the must try dishes here.
Finally for Desserts, we had Coconut Souffle and Karupattimisu. Both the desserts were impressive, especially the Karupattimisu, which is their take on the Classic Tiramisu, though here with the use of Palm Jaggery.
The menu has gone through some changes, the quantity to price ratio has been changed to accommodate people who would love to try different variety of dishes without burning a hole in their pockets. Overall, it was a pleasant and satisfying experience.

Wanted to visit this place for sometime now. It wasn't open couple of times I crossed them. Finally I made it last week with my friend. The interiors are warm and well maintained and staff polite. Mutton Biryani and Kola Urundai were the items I was looking forward to try and i my expectations were greatly satisfied. My friend is a vegetarian this season š and ordered a veg thali...he too was licking his fingers. The thogal and keerai were too good (yes I borrowed some š). They could have added a banana leaf inside the plate like most restaurants do. Gobi 65 and complimentary vadam were great too. Miss the complimentary snacks these days in other restaurants. This isn't my friend's first visit and he mentioned that the food portions and price both seem to be reduced however tastes yummy as usual!

Let me start off by saying it's 3.5 stars, not 4.
We went here for a casual family lunch, on a Sunday. I would highly suggest you to inform the restaurant staff in advance cause this place is small and cosy, hence tightly packed on a Sunday afternoon.
After a waiting period of about 30min, we got our tables. The ambience is rustic and so is most of the cuisine. Lovely atmosphere as well... as you can expect just family crowds.
I guess they were understaffed (staff were very courteous though) that day, so there were a few troubles placing the order and service also got delayed (we ordered a soup but it never arrived and other items showed up so we gave up the soup eventually).
We had Ambur Chicken Biriyani and Maplai Non Veg Thali for main course and ordered Paneer Kurumulaku Fry, Naatu Kozhi Fry and Kokkarakko Chicken Lollipop for sides. Everything tasted amazing, especially the side dishes while all the items in the Thali were really tasty except for the mutton curry.
We cooled off with Rose Milk and Maplai Falooda at the end.
It was sort of an unsatisfactory experience due to overcrowding and slow service but the fabulous dishes and the moderate pricing are tempting. I would love to visit this place again as I highly hope that they deliver better this time.

Been here couple of times with colleagues for lunch after hearing/ reading a lot of good reviews. The restaurant is cozy and they do have some (not many !!) South Indian cuisines in their menu. My personal favorites here are Madurai mutton biryani, mutton nei varuval, guntur prawn fry, karimeen polichathu (couldn' missout the naadan food :$ ). We also did have Karuvepilai chicken, country chicken fry and suppur spicy andhra chicken (it didn't do justice to the name though :| ) which tasted just OK !Ā Coconut souffle, karupatitmisu and the summer special mango shake were hands down delicious and I could'n have them enough.Ā A must try restaurant even though its bit overpriced and overhyped by many !!

Location It is located on the ECR road and is very difficult to miss. Parking is available but limited for cars.
Ambiance I really liked the interiors as it had a rustic charm to it.
Food and Drinks Went there in the afternoon with an office colleague. We wanted to try prawn Biryani but unfortunately it wasn't available and we had to settle for mutton Biryani and some Chettinad chicken as starter.
Maplai is actually very famous for its Biriyani and they didn't disappoint. The Biriyani was good and the starter was as good as well. Both I felt could have been better given the reputation of the brand name.
Price The pricing is a little on the heavy side.
Overall a great place for Biriyani lovers.

On my first visit we waited for an hour to get a table. That, along with the foreseen bill made me have an average experience. The food, I enjoyed. However on my second visit, I just saw it as any other sort-of-fancy restaurant serving food. Not South Indian food specifically.

One amazing place for having mouth watering South Indian food specializing in chettinad and Kerala style of food. Had the thanjavur kair katti meat balls. They were an absolute delight. Full of flavors and give the tunde kababs a run for money. Theeran is really sweet and recommended one of the best varieties to try from the vast menu. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will definitely recommend it to people who want to try out awesome chettinad food .

Absolutely delicious food. Most of the items that we tried turned out to be great. Ambience was very good too. Servers were courteous but failed to bring the dishes on time. They even forgot a couple of dishes and we had to end up cancelling them. Definitely worth the visit for the quality of food served!

It has become a monthly stop for our family. Main credit goes to egg_vepudu, thalasseri biryani and all mutton starters. There is always a waiting time of 20-30 mins, itās better to go early.
Being a regular, visited the place for dinner.. Commendable hospitality beginning from the front desk to the servers.. Had chettinad egg gravy.. Somehow it lacked the pepper spice that's typical of chettinad dishes.. Chicken fried rice was good.. Had chunks of boneless chicken pieces deep fried like 65..coin barotta and idiyappam were outstanding..expertise was evident...however, Egg appam didn't go well.. Quantity and presentation of all dishes were good.. Not to forget the rice vadam with mayonnaise.. Maybe the temperature of the air conditioner needs better stabilisation.. Food was getting too cold and did not match the pace of serving the dishes which was already decent.. Perhaps climate in the halls could be kept a little warmer.. Writing this despite summer.. Overall a fine experience for a weekend Dinner..

True to the word , their signature drink the rose milk was amazing so was the nannari drink, my husband ended up having twice ! They also have a yummy pappad and dip that gets placed on the table as complimentary.
Most biryani specialty places fail to have a dessert ! But this place has an amazing selection of desserts !
Karupattimisu - tiramisu with palm jaggery was finger licking good !
Nothing less that 5 star for them !

We were two and went here for a dinner, ordered Nandu rasam, Chicken Kothu Parotta and Chicken chukka dosa and there is a complimentary papad. The taste and quality of food is good but not the best. We had every last piece of the papad which was crispy. Please note for Zomato gold members the network coverage is bad inside the restaurant, you had to go out for unlocking gold or you can request for free wifi password.

Chicken lollipop was excellent with sweet and spicy taste in a saucy medium,i never tasted like that so far.
Then entered into main coarse, thalassery prawn briyani and mutton briyani. Thalassery prawn briyani was good, prawn was deeply cooked with sweet taste. But mutton briyani beat the taste of thalassery briyani may be this depends on my taste...Those who love purely chettinad foods dnt miss the maplaiš

Ordered three items: Thalassery Chicken Biryani, Ambur Mutton biryani and the Brownie sundae.
With the first bite of the thalassery biryani, you know you have reached Biryani paradise and returned. The mutton Biryani when compared was not that great, but again that depends on preferences on how spicy or flavoured you like your Biryani.
For only Rs 150, we had this big glass of sundae that was a perfect end to the biryani feast. The brownies were fudgy, not ultra sweet or i-am-getting-dizzy chocolate-y. Must try!! :)
What can I Say ? If you want to have biriyani, go to maplai. Best food. Best service. A must visit. The best place where authentic south indian food is served.
Me and my husband visited this place to try Maplai kalakal thiruvizha. We were awestruck with spread they had for buffet , starting with soup to desert everything was yummy. Personal fav in every category.
Soup : Nandu rasam
Starter : chicken cheese labba
Bread/dosai : Kal dosai
Gravy : Mutton curry
Rice : obvious choice madurai mutton biriyani
Desert : karupatti mousse
Last but not least, service and hospitality of Theeran is simply the best, he made sure we tried every item available there. Had enough patience to explain the dishes and serve us repeatedly without any hesitation.
Only suggestion or rather personally I would have preferred to have a dry dish in starters like chicken 65 or butter fried chicken. Let me repeat again best buffet available in town if you love south indian foods.

Ordered Thalassery Chicken Biriyani and Ambur Mutton Biriyani. Thalassery Chicken biriyani did not disappoint one bit, rich in taste, the slightly sweet chicken masala under ghee heaven small grain rice.. It was mouth watering. The Ambur biriyani on the other hand.. Did not feel that special but it was alright with succulent pieces of mutton. Since it was a gold visit, decided to go for a dessert and my, the brownie sundae was out of this world. Their own home made ice cream and fudgy brownie in a sundae glass. It was heavenly. Must try!

This restrarunt is mainly suited for NV lovers. Both a-la-carte and Buffet available. Many varieties available under NV menu. Nandu rasam, fish, Briyani were nice. But veggies will be certainly disappointed limited varieties and very average taste.

It was like a foreign territory for me when i saw the menu because the menu was unique but the good thing is that i had people with me who knew the game. After going through the options multiple times we ended up ordering the Maplai Thaali. For non-vegetarians, they have a lot of options. Now coming to the food, it was my first proper south indian meal and it was a great experience. The thing which stood out for me has to be "Vazhapoo Kola Urundai" it was different and tasted great but that is subjective and depends upon your personal taste.
This place definitely deserve a visit if you want to try good south indian food (Although the staff is really helpful but it would do wonders if you bring your south indian friends along)
Excellent food. I was surprised to see a lot of varieties of food that you do not usually see at other places. Really a breath of fresh air. The quality is absolutely awesome. The Travancore Chicken was great and is real authentic kerala style chicken fry. Biriyani was also very good. The speciality Vattalappam dessert was smashing, and so was the Maplai falooda.
Hats off to the Maplai team, including Bogan who served us and made us feel right at home. Loved the service.
A wonderful place in Ecr to have some quality food. I tried their famous Maplai Virundhu and I was blown away by taste, quality and quantity and mind you i am a pure vegetarian. Yet, they had plenty of dishes that I couldn't even go past the 8 starters served. It was so filling. The guys who had Non Veg also loved it like anytn and I would definitely recommend the place. This is pretty close to Neelangarai police station

Loved the food.. Moderate spicy. Well cooked food with correct proportion of salt. Little bit of Kerala style.. Karimeen polichadhu was awesome... Biriyani is below par..
Great food !! If you want to enjoy traditional South Indian food this is the place for you. The food was really good however the service wasnāt great. Itās pretty easy to locate. I would suggest donāt give your car for the valet parking, not because they damaged my car in any way but when you go back to collect your car they take so long to return it was standing there waiting for literally ten minutes ! Otherwise it was a great experience.
