Took my parents to this place for a change frok regular restaurants.

The simple and elegant Ambience gave us a warm welcome. The place was peacefull and comfy.
There were many varieties available in the menu despite being a veg only restaurant.

We ordered vaazhaipoo vadai, tricolor puri, veg omlette, manathakali chapathi and mushroom dosai.

Everything was awesome and we loved it

On entering we had little doubts as the entire restaurant was empty at 9pm. We were 10 of us and wanted to try all the different varieties. All the items were super delicious . To start with Murungakai soup- excellent taste.
Veg omelette- was so thin and it just melted in.
Beet root poori - we realised that beetroot in poori can also be delicious.
Rice garlic pepper dosai was yet anotheryummilicious dosai.
Sambha podi onion oothappam and pepper podi idly and vazhai poo vadais were the other delicious ones.
On the whole this place took us by surprise and will definitely reccomend.

Went there yesterday with family. Hardly any crowd. The interiors were little frayed and showed their usage. Was not expecting much from the food. However, the quality and taste of the food were outstanding and more than compensated. Vazhai poo vadai, veg omlette, 3 types of the dinner combos, ilai kozhukkattai etc were amazing. We ordered many second and third helpings and ended up over stuffed with good food. Service was fairly quick. Would definitely visit again just for the tasty and healthy food. A good find for me.

A place for millet lovers.
They suggested and served a combo of puttu, idly, dosa, kozhukattai all made of different millets.
Good taste, healthy food, no after effects, cheap and absolute value for money.

So was among the first customers for the night and then people started walking in .

Had ordered a multigrain sundal, veg omelette and tricolour poori .All of which was served hot and tasted amazing.
Also ordered a hot herbal tea and lemon ginger juice
Herbal tea was very soothing for the perfect drizzly weather outside and lemon ginger juice was enjoyable as well
The bill came to around 265 which is pretty Value for money
It's located in the first floor and the ambience was good as well
Service was very prompt and the staff were courteous.

AWESOME ๐Ÿ™†!!! There are very few places in city where every item is good. This is one such place. Almost every dish was above average, very few are avg.
Namaazhvar virunthu had 6 types of Variety rice each made of millets, and also each tasted better than it would taste when it was made with white rice.
Seeraga samba veg briyani tasted excellent. I had it more than 4 times.

The food are healthy too. Even after having it to the fullest of my stomach, I dint feel heavy.

The only drawback is their vadas, which tasted avg, but charged too high. 60 for just 3.

Definitely a MUST TRY place in city.

Went with my family as we had heard about this place from a few friends.
Firstly the Service was BRILLIANT... Every staff present here were very courteous and attentive. A must visit for this alone

Ambience was neat, and hygiene was good. A small cozy place with a buffet consisting of salads and fruits. No complaints on this.

And the main part, we took the Millet meals consisting of 6 varieties of rice which is unlimited and a ragi roti. They also have a vegetable alongside and the taste was very good. Refills came on time and the menu was explained very well by the staff present. The bill for 4 adults and 2 kids came to 800 which is very reasonable.

We thoroughly enjoyed the food and I will visit this place again.

Went for a lunch along with family day. Since it was a house earlier, the place does not have an exact restaurant feel. One should come here more for the taste rather than the ambience. AC was not quite effective. However, coming to the food, we had Nammazhavar meals, Tholkappiam meals, traditional meals, Manthakali chapathis. Salads are kept in a common area. Nammazhvar had 7 types of millet rices and Tholkappiam had 3. Former is a 100% millet oriented and Tholkappiam had some and white rice too. Overall would say very good except for the curd rice where Kuthiravaali was not mashed properly and it was like big chunks. Nellikai more was spicy and good. Worth the price for a different experience!!

Opted this place for dinner on a Saturday. Wanted to try something different have ordered keerai nei dosai and vazhai poo vadai.

The keerai nei dosai(two varieties of each day i think so) served with sambar and 3 types of thovayal. Sambar is nice and each thuvayal tasted nice expect the thenga thuvayal is bit salty. The aroma of ghee is so good and dosai melts in mouth. Like to try their other dosa varieties soon.

Vazhaipoo vadai tasted nice served with thenga thuvayal. Had bits and Pieces of vazhai poo.

The staff is so friendly. Like to visit this place often.

Read an article about this place in vikatan. The menu and spread were tempting us. So we decided to visit the next day itsel for the lunch. Me Anu and my friend Pradeep planned to visit here. First thing about this restaurant is unlike most restaurants located on the main road, this one is located inside Gandhi Nagar in a peaceful resdential background. It's placed on the first floor of an old house and a simply decorated interior but air-conditioned. When we reached we immediately got a table but it took more than 15 mins to get a person to take our order. That was bit frustrating. However when finally someone cared to reach our table I ordered nammazhvar (nammalvar /เฎจเฎฎเฏเฎฎเฎพเฎดเฏเฎตเฎพเฎฐเฏ เฎตเฎฟเฎฐเฏเฎจเฏเฎคเฏ) virunthu. This is a spread of 19 dishes with 3 juices, 3 veggies and an all millet variety Rice's (thinai sambar rice, kudhiravali tomato Rice, seeraga samba biriyani, varagu curd rice, rasam rice etc) all for rs.160 the taste was really mouth watering and also tummy full. Finally ordered a panagam to digest.
A best place to try our traditional and healthy millet lunch.
Only concern is the number of staff serving the guest need to be improved.

Was curious about this place after seeing the name. Finally paid a visit. Located amidst houses in a silent street in adayar, this clearly is a house converted into a hotel.

Parking is pretty easy and in this aspect much better than prem's gram bhojan which is the other millet based hotel in adayar.

Coming to the food, the menu is refreshing. Beetroot dosa , spiced tender coconut and other unique dishes are it's USP. All food is cooked in traditional oil and taste is pretty good. Definitely try all the unconventional dishes as they are totally worth it. Be ready to spend some time as orders take some extra time to come to your table.

Overall, a very healthy and a beautiful restaurant in adayar which serves millet based food. Number of tables are limited... So go early !!!

Enna solrathu... nalla idea. Had their Vinayagar Chathurthi special saapad. Loved the idea of using small millets and other unpopular grains in their offerings - good for the stomach and the planet too. Rice cultivation is not only a huge drain on our water resources but also prevents biodiversity. Only thing: south Indian cooking must be served hot otherwise it loses its charm. Will visit on a regular day and sample their lunch menu. Kudos guys.

As more and more people turn towards healthy food and organic food , here is one more restaurant in the city promoting millet based traditional food and their name pretty much says it all . The service area is located on the first floor as of now although they have a ground floor seating area as well . Their menu is quite limited and they do have day to day specials . I ordered for a millet meal and vazhaipoo vadai.

The sambar (millet) rice was yummy and was served hot .The rasam rice might have tasted much better if it was served hot . The curd rice was a perfect climax to the meal . The payasam was yummy and the vazhaipoo vada is a must try crunchy snack . The food was served on time and the staff were attentive and cordial .

Have been passing by this place quiet a some time. Every time I pass by , i said my self that I should visit this place. Almost 6 months passed by so I decided to visit this place, so influenced my office colleagues and finally visited for lunch on 21st jul. It's a very humble restaurant with simple, functional and comfortable cane furniture. That gives a very traditional look with modern touch. The area adds to the ambience. For lunch we had 6 different options by number of dishes and full millet or rice meals. We ordered both types to make sure we taste every thing. As a started we got millet onion pakoda which was crispy and tasty. The millet lunch had payasam, ragi roti, vada, kothi malli chutney, one poriyal, kootu, sambar sadam, thair sadam, rasam sadam, all out of millets. The taste is amazing and you enjoy every but of it. The staff here are very courtious and were explaining every dish. Coming to the price for lunch at around โ‚น160 with all taxes is beyond being worth with all the taste courtesy and health. My next visit will be for a breakfast and lunch. Huhhhj... my longest review is guess..

Thirukural Unavagam is one of the very few restaurants which serves Millet meals and Traditional rice meals in Chennai. I came to know about this place through a Friend. Immediately planned and went with friends. This place is easy to locate. Parking is manageable in roadside near restaurant.

Ambiance is simple and decent. During my first visit it was in ground floor, later moved to first floor. Only for those who couldn't climb stairs are permitted seating in ground floor. Small place with decent number of tables and chairs. Chairs, lighting, tissue stand etc are made of wood. Tissue stand is like a Bullock cart looks cool.

Service is sometimes good, sometimes get delayed if crowded. In general the place is not crowded. First thing attracted me over here is their menu. I couldn't recollect restaurant serving traditional rice ๐Ÿš meals. All the items in menu are of healthy options. Must try place for healthy food lovers.

Been here few times and all my visits is for lunch. Tried their traditional rice ๐Ÿš meals, Millet meals and starters like vazapoo Vadai, halwa etc. Even normal rice Meals is Available. Let see how the taste of food is in detail -

Traditional rice ๐Ÿš meals - It consists of traditional rice ๐Ÿš, Keerai chapathi, Keerai kootu, poriyal, one variety rice made of Millet, sambar, rasam, thogayal, appalam, Payasam and thinai curd rice. Everything is good especially Keerai kootu. They have rotational menu. Each Items is unique which are good for health. It is a unlimited meals.

Millet meals - it consists of variety rice, sambar sadam, rasam sadam, Thayir Sadam, Keerai chapathi, thogayal, poriyal, Keerai kootu, appalam and Payasam. Everything is good especially sambar sadam. Variety rice ๐Ÿš alone normal in taste. Each rice ๐Ÿš is made of different Millets. It is a limited meals.

Vazapoo Vadai was excellent in taste. Soft, warm and tasty. Halwa was decent. Also had Nilli Moore which was awesome. Didn't expect it to be that great. Must try over here. Even water over here is different each day. One day they served venthiya water another day with vettiver. Those are also good for health and tasted good.

Price is cheaper considering the quantity, quality and location. Worth every penny. Must try vegetarian restaurant for those who are looking forward for healthy food options. Going to revisit for dinner and try other varieties of food. It is the place where tradition meets trend.

Visited this place yesterday and completely amazed by the quality of food and service. The waiters explained each and every item in the menu patiently and helped us make our choices.

Also the food quality was great - had no maida, white sugar or refined oil. We ordered a plate of vada (was excellent and a must try here), a daily specialty sweet - yesterday they had a sweet with a village "karupati" / "Palm Jaggery" coffee taste. Also ordered the traditional meals which had everything made of different types of rice. After eating the meals also I felt quite light which is a good sign for digestion as well.

The water was not the usual "purified" type; it was served in bronze tumblers.

And kudos to the service. Since I was badly sick with heavy cold. So I kept on requesting for hot rasam and hot water. They kept on serving without even a slight grimace.

They even requested us to visit in the evening someday and try their snacks items. Will be surely visiting soon to try those out as well.

Edit 1 (July 29) - went again to taste the snacks here. V ordered a keera vaala poo vada and Masala sundal. Both the dishes were extremely tasty and the total cost was around 130rs. However, the menu options seemed very limited when we visited this time. Hope to see more menu options soon.

Concept and staff score. Sometimes ambience is just a distraction for the lack of those.
The inside decor was basic with a mural depicting the stories of Tamil Nadu. The inherent culture and how things were better back then.
About the food, there were different items made from millets, sprouts and the veggies. Went for a bamboo rice dosa and it was crisp and yet not oily. The stuffing had no aloo(such a relief).
All in all, neat!

lovely, fresh food...homestyle cooking and plenty of millets used across dishes. we've tried the south indian thali, the millet combo thali and a couple of snacks (corn pakodas, banana flower vadai) and quite liked them all. Flavours may not blow your mind but this place does live up to its promise - simple, down-to-earth, satisfying food. and sometimes thats all you need.

17/07/17 - updating the review and rating - the last few times i've been there, the food has been significantly less tasty and the service is super confused. they take your order and don't bring half the dishes. when you check, they say it's over and they forgot to let you know. another time, we were there for lunch and got told there was only biryani & curd rice and that the kitchen was busy with a catering order. sad.

Been there based on the review by one of my friend. The place is cozy and comfortable having 25 seats.
Service is timely and they are friendly recommending about highlight dishes.
We started by having Kathazhai soup - Perfect with pepper Tasted like rasam. But good to start the meal.
Ordered for Venthaya Kali and banana leaf kozhukattai. Both were mouth watering.
For main course, ordered bamboo rice dosa, cholam dosa and ragi dosa. All were perfect. The one thing we loved is the sambar which gave the feeling of home made sambar.
Finally doesn't with a lemon,ginger, karupatti juice.
On the whole, perfect place to have healthy food.
Not to forget, price is very nominal. All those costed around 530 for us.

We decided to try something different and found Thirukural Unavagam very attractive initially because of the name. Person who coined this name has a good forethought I would say.

The most beautiful thing is they have made complete justice to the name by providing quality traditional tasty food. We had Thayir vadai, Meals, Millet Thayir Satham. Butter milk with gooseberry in it and lemon ginger juice with jaggery were also different which not every restaurants try out to impress their customers.

On the whole it was a great experience. Every vegetarian South Indian food lover will find this place interesting. This is also an extremely pocket friendly place.

I like it when good unexpected things happen... One such thing for the lunch today... "Thirukural Unavagam", ย probably a house turned down to a restaurant leaving the kitchen alone as the food served is typically home food topped up with traditional dishes... I felt heavy though after having the "Parambariyam Meals" which has all the dishes available for the day expect for the vada & juices. They serve you water flavored with "Avaram poo" & "Vetti veru" alternatively on a week... Sambar & Curd vada was also good... Keep up the food and service...

Located in Gandhinagar, the place is easy to miss if you ain't familiar with adyar. It's to your right on the 2nd main road when coming from depot (inner road).

All their food is prepared with organic produce and also have an organic store inside the restaurant:) the water here is provided in copper glasses and is herbal too!

Orders:
Soup of the day- Kollu (horse gram) soup.
Aromatic rasam high on pepper which made me sweat instantly. ๐Ÿ˜‹

Vazhai ilai kozhukattai (banana leaf dumplings):
Dumplings prepared with different flours on different days. The day I went, it was made with Kambu. The filling inside was drool worthy with jaggery and coconut shavings :)

Veg omelette: again, its prepared with millet batter and dozed with onion and pepper. My expectations of mixed veggies was not the answer. It tasted like adai and wasn't very great.

Mapilai samba dosa: dosa prepared with millet batter, comes with extra spicy mushroom masala. Crispy and yummy.

Herbal dosa of the day: vallarai dosa. It was slightly cold and wasn't crispy. Just okayish when it comes to taste.

Price: INR 433/- totally worth it!

Location & Ambience: I followed the map exactly to find the place and the place is located in a residential area with space to park your vehicle on the road. The place looks neat and is maintained well.

Taste & Variety: The restaurant focuses on South Indian millet-based food items; they have a good variety of South Indian tiffin and rice varieties. We dropped here for lunch and we decided to go with Millets Mini Meals and Parambariya Sappadu.

Siruthaniya (millets) Mini Meals 1 - it consists of Samai Biryani, Kuthiravali Sambhar Rice, Kuthiravali Curd Rice, Pala Thaniya Thuvayal, Snake Gourd Poriyal, Appalam, Sundakkai Vathal, Kambu Koozh and Millet Payasam. The highlight of this meals is the koozh, it will be a delight for the summer and tasted too good. The sambhar and curd rice with the poriyal were perfect; and another best dish on that tray was the thuvayal, bold flavours that will excite you and it goes well with the rice and koozh. The sundakkai vathal goes well with the koozh. The right amount of sweetness and the creamy consistency of the millets payasam made this a memorable end to the meal.

Parambariya Sappadu (Meals) - White Rice, Red Rice (Poongar Rice), Sambhar, Horsegram Rasam, Keerai Kootu, Kuthiravali Curd Rice, Samai Biryani, Pala Thaniya Thuvayal, Appalam, Chappati, Veg Kuruma and Millet Payasam. Everything on the plate was really delicious and there werenโ€™t many complaints except that they could have given the red rice instead of white rice which would have made this better than the regular meals. The sambhar and rasam were so good. Besides the tasty poriyal and thuvayal, the keerai kootu is a delight and wish they include keerai kootu in their everyday menu. I did like the other dishes on the tray too. Their lunch menu had really impressed me and I must check the tiffin menu soon. Also, the food items in the meals vary each day.

Quality & Quantity: The meals portion is just right for a person but my partner did wish he had more quantity of rice; so yeah the meals portion may not be sufficient for you. The food quality is great; the choice of ingredients (they use millets, cold pressed oil and farm grown veggies), the food variety and the taste is too good and one of the impressive reasons why you will like the restaurant.

Price: The bill was Rs.275 INR in total; the mini meal isย priced at Rs.120 INR and the meals are Rs.150 INR. For the portion, I think the pricing is slightly higher but the choice of ingredients and taste are reasons enough to understand why the pricing is so. Also, I feel itโ€™s worth the money you spend.

This is the first time m trying a place that serves traditional food with millets, grains nd without white sugar nd no refined oil. Even the water which they served was purified with cumin seeds. They change the menu everyday. Today when i tried the special combo was samai sambhar rice, samai curd rice , beetroot chappathi nd greens with a payasam.. It was sooo tasty. It was soo authentic. The sambhar rice was really gud. The ambience was gud nd the service was gud as well. I would definitely try it again.. We may eat anything but the traditional food has all the health stored in it for us..so i feel its essential to take it atleast once in a week nd this place serves the food at its best.

Traditional food is the new rock.

Located in Gandhi Nagar 2nd Main Road, Thirukural Unavagam is an old two storeyed beautiful home converted into a simple, traditional restaurant that's done up using few light shades giving a rustic, local look to the place. There are a few old toys and Thirukural script quoted on few of the walls too.

Everything about this place is simple, even the menu which is a two sided laminated card listing out all traditional dishes made using millets and other organic delicacies written in Tamil as well as English.

Coming to the food, we started with vadais which were made of Kambu and keerai. I loved the kambu vadai, super crispy and Keerai vadai was light and delicious, tasted more like a normal Dal one. From the idly section we tried Kelvaragu idly, loved it with the onion Coconut chutney and sambar. In the dosa platter we tried Ghee podi uthappam,Vendhaya keerai dosa, vallarai dosa and Kambu dosai. Kambu and vallarai dosai were our instant favourites and light on tummy. Also tried their special carrot juice, which was way too watery, little disappointing.

We paid Rs 530 for all this, complete vfm.

Good spot to hit for a homely, ethnic South Indian food.

There are very few restaurant's which have been resoundingly good from start to end and Thirukural Unavagam rightfully falls in that positive bracket. All the items dished out here are of the traditional kind made from millets and herbal products.

The place is located in a quiet suburb in Gandhi Nagar and shouldn't be much of a hassle finding it with maps coming to aid. No valet facility but as it's situated in a silent lane away from the hoot of the streets, sufficient space is available for parking your vehicles.

It is a converted restaurant from a quaint old house and consists of a portion downstairs as well as upstairs. There is a very local and rustic feel about the surrounding and you find scriptures of the ancient Thirukural scrips and the bommais (soft toys) bring out the cultural feel of the rural land. It is very simple in it's outlook with no gimmicks whatsoever.

They usually allow for upside seating only once the ground portion is filled and that was the case when we reached here at around mid 8ish prompting us to be sent to the top. We were the only one's there and the cane chair seating gave a very cozy and languid feel. We were apprehensive on the service whether we would at all be checked upon being the only exclusive guests on top but that was put to rest immediately with a dedicated waiter being assigned to us who was very adroit and not only helped us with our order but also brought along the food in doubly quick time.

The menu is just a 2 sider laminated copy with one side having the dine options and the other comprising of the drinks. Interesting point to note is that all the food items are written in local tamil language. We first had a shot at the soup titled "Thoothuvazhai" which set the tone beautifully for things to follow. It was a light spicy soup consisting inset shredded pieces of potatoes, carrots, beans and spices. The dosa section had interesting choices and we enjoyed a sumptuous feast here. The Vendhiya keerai dosa was simply ravishing with the essence of the vendhiya keerai lingering for long. A word of praise should also be reserved for the coconut/onion chutney and the sambar which were such joyful accompaniments. The millet and herbal dosa too went along expected lines as the former turning out to be ravishing in taste. We also had a hand made millet kozhakattai which had a nice sweet tinge to it. The beetroot chappathi looked all pink with the strong odour of beetroot and went along in sync with the delightful veg kurma. Another show stealer of our dinner sojourn was the veg omelette made with paasi payaru with a strong peppery hint and cut pieces of onions. This was infectious in taste prompting us to go for a repeat. The pachai payaru payasam was close to the equilavent of chakra pongal and felt sweet and the goodness in taste was apparent.

For closure, we went with white pumpkin juice, amla buttermilk and herbal (mooligai theneer) tea. The first two were more of the 'mor' kinds and felt very refreshing. You could also feel the presence of pumpkin and amla along with the elongated butter milk froth. After a heavy meal these come in really handy and can give infuse the perfect signal to finish proceedings. But the best was reserved for the last. The herbal tea at an insanely low cost price of 20 bucks was one of the best tonics I've ever had. It had such a divine taste and was to devour. It was like the final sockdolager punch and was simply killer. I will revisit this place just to have a slice of the tea yet again.

We were very satisfied customers and all the stuff we had pushed us back by just a wee bit above 500 bucks. The taste on offer and value for money will guarantee give you something to relish about. This is a gem of a restaurant and trust me you can take my word and go feel the simple, homely and divine taste of Thirukural. I'm more than confident you won't come disappointed. Highly recommended for a wholesome south indian aromatic experience.

They promote healthy and back to basics, traditional food which is very welcome in a fast world. We had the limited menu variety rice with millets ( sambar, curd and seeraga samba veg biriyani) and another traditional rice lunch. Both were quite filling and you can go in for namalvar/ buffet option if you are really starving. Otherwise their portion sizes are generous. We also tried the vazhapoo vadai (banana flower based) coconut milk based, dates milk shake which was really filling. All the dishes are well prepared, hygenically and nutritionally and served on banana leaves. They have a little store selling oils and limited grocery. Restaurant is upstairs, no lift. Plenty of street parking, no issues there. A few reviews talk about sheet roofing and place getting hot, but I found it cooled well with 3 AC at mid day, so that seems to be addressed. Overall a place worth frequenting and may I add that its easier on the pocket too. Don't expect 5 * amenities like valet parking, welcome drink and fancy menus...if you have realistic expectations this is a excellent place with full value for money.

Went to this place for dinner. This is located in Gandhi Nagar. I called up the restaurant before reaching there for reservation. As it was a weekday, they told us to walk in. After we reached, we were allotted table immediately. We ordered veg omelette, tricolour poori, special dosa, vazha poo vadai. All of the dishes were good. We had ginger lemon juice and dates juice. Both were good. Value for money and pocket friendly and healthy food too! Must visit place.

I had a chance to visit this place with my mom and she loved it... The concept, the place, the food everything was nice. They don't put maida, sugar or refine oil in any of their food item. I found ghee/gingely oil in good amount in their food. Anyways it's a better option. So go out there n try it out.

Good traditional food restaurant. Millet varieties are used in different menus. Try their veg omelet and vada. Interiors are good with nice concept on the walls. They sell also traditional snacks and cold pressed groundnut oil. Good to have few Tamil literature books and Tamil quoted T shirts. Worth try. You will love to eat traditional veg foods and snacks. Now they started with Buffet concept at week ends. Early bird offer 20% off on bill

A very good place the one can find to treat their taste buds by the traditional millet, small grains , and organic foods. They have mentioned that all the food menus prepared here contains no white sugar and no refined oil. A great plus. Little bit costlier than a normal food cafe. ( Affordable because of their raw materials and way of preparation) Infrastructure and ambience are also quite different from other cafes. Foodies can give a try once .

Food is very tasty. Service is at snails pace. Tried millet special and the traditional meals. Both were good. The salads are additional on the Virundhu and are good. Try to reach there early for lunch. Only one AC was functional when we went and this made it very difficult to have a pleasant meal.

I've never in my life got a chance to taste a food with this protein rich and unprocessed! It is one of the best traditional good restaurant located at Gandhi Nagar, Adyar. Located in the peaceful silent calm place where you can enjoy every bit of food you eat. It's a blissful experience. When you crave for it want to try traditional food. I strongly recommend this place. Thank you.
