South indian authentic taste of breakfast.
We went today morning and have ordered podi idli,onion ghee dosa, garlic ghee dosa and a coffee.
The top rank goes to garlic ghee dosa.
Garlic ghee dosa - very special dish. I recommend this dish. A normal dosa stuffed with raw garlic masala. It was served with onion chutney and coconut chutney. And of course sambar. But it was not a thick sambar. It could be better.
Onion ghee dosa - dosa stuffed with small cut of slightly oil fried onions. Nothing much special about it.
Ghee podi idli - A fantastic one. Soft and fluffy idly topped around with podi. This podi is made my them and very traditional taste. But little costly. They costs 25rs./piece of idly. Worth for it.
Coffee - little bitter taste of coffee beans.
Overall
Food - fantastic 4/5
Ambience - three tables to be seated and two for standing eaters. 3/5
Price - 2/5 idli costs 25rs. Per piece is not acceptable. But for the taste it is convincing.
Though Iam not well, as per my wife's wish came to the one and only Kannadasan Mess. Welcomed with some light music of some good chants and a Bahubali man with a smiling face wishing and welcoming
I have asked for the best item of their menu, they told it's difficult for them to select one best item as all of their items are best. I have ordered khaima idli (veg) - didn't like it, average taste.
The special Balaji masala dosa - authentic taste of goodness served with special Kara chutney, nei podi, sambar, pudina chutney. Really good and make sure you eat it as early as you get it.
Ada upma - can't remember the exact name but it's fentastic really liked it

Well. If you wanna have the best South Indian breakfast, have this particular restaurant in your mind. Just Amazing. They have a lot of varieties of Dosa and other dishes and my good advice is never miss any. Cheers.
Went here today for breakfast.. Alone.. I had garlic ghee podi dosa... It was yummmmm.. That punch of garlic and the right amount of ghee.. Amaziing.. Along woth that smooth tomato chutney.. Eternal.. Definitely will visit again soon... Also had coffee which was bad.. I guess that was instant coffee and not filter.. š Else great..

A good place , friendly cashier (seems like the owner ) and the person who takes the order too , he was kind enough to smile and explain today s special and took the order , but the thing which irritated me was the wait time there . Food is first class , really worth a visit .
The best mess restaurant in t nagar. They serve variety rices and all sort of south indian tiffen for dinner. The GHEE dosai is the favourite item here and and they serve with smile always. They also prepare a dish called "Vegetable Omelet Dosa" which tastes exactly like an omelet but without egg.
The cost is cheaper than most of the messes. Before going there make sure you donāt hesitate to eat standing in street. They is no place to sit in the hotel. It is situated in the "Kanadasan Street" opposite to TTDC, Venkatnarayana Road. Don't miss to visit this when you visit T Nagar or TTDC.

A good place tucked in a quite street behind Natesan Park in t.nagar. A vegetarian place which will definitely make you happy. A must visit place for great food at the same time light on your pocket.

Update - After their change of location to dhandapani street i ve visited them twice. This time d lady wasn't there at bill desk. Probably her son. He is d nicest. Always providing suggestions with a big smile on his face. They've dine in space too. Tried nallennai poondu dosa, paneer dosa, idiyapam vadacurry, kaima idly. Everything tasted great.
One thing they could improve is to avoid plastic covers for parcels n use banana leaf instead. Also got a slight heartburn as an after effect both the time.
Older - Had a chance to try dis place once on a eve n on a noon for lunch since its near my office. Had tried their medhu vada, meals, sambar sadam, chapati. Even though food was average n less pricey, i had possibly worst experience from d lady at billing desk. Since i opted for a takeaway i paid money in advance n she said she would give change of 5 after receiving d order. Asked her abt change after getting parcels. With an angry scowl at her face she said i don't ve change(silra la ila). I wouldn't ve minded abt it if she had said in a polite way. But she was all rude n had huge attitude towards customers. Possibly one of d worst experiences i've had. Rated 1!

Located in a calm place with genuine and friendly service, Kannadasan mess was a different(and very nice) experience for me than the usual kaiyaendhi bhavan experiences. Food was of decent taste and good quality. Ordered Kothu parotta, Neipoondu dosa and Paneer dosa. Had them with coconut chutney, mint chutney and Sambhar. All of them tasted decent.

I think the allure of the place becomes massive if you are a fan of Kannadasan songs and the history associated with the place.. run by his grandson..great service with a smile all the time..its a classical ākaiyendhi bhavanā wherein one needs to hold the plate in hand and eat on the roadside.. its one of the more passable such places I have come across in chennai when it comes to cleanliness but if you are a cleanliness freak, then its a big no! Coming to food, its pretty decent and the variety for such a small outlet is surprising.. the podi masala dosa, kothu parotta, poondu dosa, adai are all tasty.. the chutney and sambar are average compared to chennai restaurant standards but is definitely home cooked style tasty.. I would recommend that you should go without any great expectations while visiting this place for the first time and let the whole experience grow on you.. I'll delve into some history of the place. The place is originally located next to Kavignar Kannadhasan's home. And is also being run by his grandson. The manager has appeared in many films in small roles.
It looks ancient, but when you see the crowd coming to the place, you become curious and will want to eat here.
The manager is the real hero here. Wow, his attitude has brought the place to fame. The working staff are extremely loyal to him. The food is absolutely amazing. Especially try their parottas and ghee podi dosas. The price, no one has ever cared about I guess. In fact I don't remember, because you don't think about it, you just assume it's cheap and eat here and pay the bill.
This restaurant follows the golden principles of an aspiring restaurant: good quantity, good price, good quality.
Overall, good place, I have had a million times my dinner in the place.

Kannadasan mess, is a hidden gem in one of the streets of T Nagar. Located bang opposite to Natesan Park.
There are no seating options as such, a small kiosk sort of place with an open kitchen. We can pretty much see what we are going to eat. Everything is served in a banana leaf here which can be placed on a slab.
We had one of our breakfast here which was nei poondu dosa and Venn pongal. Nei poondu dosa had a hint of garlic on a ghee roast, it was delicious. Sambar and chutney were also too good. Venn pongal, definitely one of the best I've had so far in Chennai.
If you're in T Nagar , do make a visit to this place for some yummy food in a pocket friendly rate.

If you in T.nagar , you have to try Kannadasan Mess ( said my trusted foodie Asif M Habib ). After too much of road side shopping , we walked a few more kms to spot this hidden gem. Sadly none of the auto walas was not able to help me spot this place , and we both decided not to use GOOGLE ( well we get cranky at times like this )The place is a small mess , with a chalkboard describing the days's special.Ā
We settled for Ghee Podi Dosa and Ghee Poondu (Garlic Dosa), the Ghee Podi was heavenly , the crispy dosa wsa generously smothered with spicy podi and was cooked in Ghee, the aroma of ghee was evenly spread through the dosa, on the other hand the garlic flaovur hit me too hard, and the tambrahm in me found it way to strong.Ā
The sambhar was thick and flavourful, the chuttneys can have a little more salt in it.Ā
The wash area was surprising clean.
The anna who runs the mess, was very kind and his service was very quick. he single handled everything with a smile on this face. The crowd was handful .
IF you in and around Tnagar. Do visit this place. Price was actually cheap. All we paid was Rs.130, the size of the Dosa was filling for 2 people.

After hearing so much about the place, finally got to be here for breakfast.
No seating.
But pretty crowded even in the early morning times.
Neo poondu dosai was spicy. Not a great lover of garlic, but this one made me feel otherwise.
Sambhar vadai - For many years now, thought HSB' sambhar vadai was the best.But this was equally good.Only suggestion they can heat the sambhar and then serve.Would ve been extraordinary then.

Ambiance is zero but that's not why you go to this place. It's about the food.
Had the Adai and Vadacurry, plain dosai and vadai. Breakfast outside is incomplete without vadai and this vadai here reminded me of home. One could actually taste onions. Similarly, one could see many vegetables in the sambar, a rare view it is.
There is compromise in cleanliness but not in taste. Loved the Adai and Vadacurry but the dosai was slightly burnt.
All this costed us less that ā¹200/- which is major VFM.

Nei poondu Dosa is something which you should never miss out. It was such delight and yummy. Only problem is they r pouring all the chutney and sambar together on the Dosa! Paneer kothu porata was not good. I liked their service alot.

Located right behind Natesan park and next to the legendary lyricist Kannadasan's home. This place was highly recommended by one of our vendors who frequents this joint. Its an upgraded version of kaienthi bhavan but was great. You can see rush even on weekdays and no panic the staff here takes care of it well. The food on the other hand is exotic and don't forget to taste their nei ppondu and veg omlet.

This is basically the lunch place which I frequent whenever I don't let my health to get screwed. It's named after the legendary lyricist and author of Tamil film industry and run by his family.
It's in the vicinity circumference of Natesan Park. Parking is along side the park's compound wall.
It's like a stationary kiosk where we order, pay and fetch the dish served in banana leaf.
The kitchen is visible so you can pretty much see what you are going to eat.
It's a rotating menu and it's wise to have mini meals in for lunch which has 3 types of rice with kuzhal vathal. They serve ghee chapathi with Coconut Korma which is very close to what we have at home. Their vazhapoo, keera kolas are healthy and tasty accompaniments.
Dinner starts here by 7, Nei Podi Dosa a must have.
Almost every dish is priced with Rs 40. Dish serving time is quick.

There are no tables as such or seating available. Just a slab sorta thingy in which the food is served. The food is like served on a banana leaf which adds more taste to it. Actually a kind of street food, located in t.nagar with a small outlet, it serves south indian food with more of intense taste and flavour in it. All d foods were served hot and were tempting with their taste.Also know as Balaji Tiffin Centre , this mess is run by the ppl of lyricist Kannadasans family. One cannot expect a kind of royal dine with great ambience here, still it is a great treat for the street food lovers . I would defenitely recommend ppl to try this out and have a satisfying food
it's a very nice eatery for south Indian cuisine especially tn delicacy, there idlis, crisp dosas, pooris, pongal vada, mangalore bondas are some of my favourites, there sambhar nd chutney tingles the taste buds, the pros are tasty lipsmackng food at affordable price, a good spot to hang out with frnds, cons are hygiene, being a road side eatery in day time flies swam around nd being situated opp to a park with lot of trees, in eves there is heavy mosquito menace nd also some other bugs that swarm around lights hung in the eatery

Piping hot south indian tiffin on a banana leaf! what a pleasure to all our senses!
It definetly makes us forget all the fancy food and restuarants.
No need of candle lights.
No need of symphony.
No need of designer walls.
No need of signature crockery,and I could go on and on....
but the point is we lay flat surrendered to the ghee infused aroma and the freshly grounded spicy sambhar in plate :D
And not just because we are south indian in blood, this is the type of comfort food,anyone can come home to anyday.

ven pongal - perfectly smashed consistentcy and flavored,we will definetly forget to pick the peppercorns this time :D
ghee garlic dosa - a not so thin yet crispy dosa with a layer of freshly minced garlic paste taking the dosa to next level
kaima idly - spicy,spicy with all possible grounded masalas,this can be a meal by itself,huge quantity with rich taste.
It is accompanied by veg kurma - another delicious dish with a good array of veggies.
Generally all dosas are accompanied by sambhar,coconut chutney,kara chutney,karuvepillai podi/chutney.
Every dosa made with various millet options is quite exciting and worth to try.
Yet to explore their lunch menu.

Was recommending this place to friends in the afternoon and then I had no idea I will land myself here for dinner. Lip smacking good the place is . hidden away from the buzz in t nagar this is located just below kannadasan publishers and run by the family. The place was crowded when I reached and the staff handled the rush extraordinarily good and was quickly attending to each and everyone over the counter. The place has no seating and u have to have the food placing the plates on the small counters outside the shop. There are wide Variety of dosas to choose from. I started by ordering a Garlic dosa and was promplty served within five minutes with three variants of chutney and sambar. The dosa was a treat for the tastebuds. Next on my order was ghee podi onion dosa. The aroma and the taste of this was a bliss. Almost full, ordered a kothu parotta which was a perfect finishing touch to my dinner. The staff here are so courteous and attend you very well. Would have been an added advantage if there was seating option. But that will never hinder to make you go back to this place. Also to mention all this food cost me just 140 rupees which is a totally awesome.

Kannadasan mess is also known as Balaji Tiffin Centre. It is located near Natesan park, T Nagar.
This mess is run by the poet Kannadasanās family.
We got a chance to speak to Kannadasnās daughter whose family ran the mess. She told us that they started this shop around early 90ās and had changed place thrice since then as they found the other places unlucky. Seems the shop was placed near Nalli, T Nagar, where they faced some rental issues and finally came back to the same street where they first began. At first they only served dinner and now they serve lunch as well.
They have a shop adjacent to the mess which serves chinese and North Indian food.
For the past few weeks my plans to this place ended up a failure, but we finally made it! :) :)
So, we reached the place, parked our bikes and looked at the small black board which had the menu on it. Since I donāt know to read Tamil, I made my friends read it aloud for me and also asked for several repeat. :P
The place is very small and has only a kitchen. There is a slab where you can place he plates and eat, or you can take the plates to your vehicles and eat.
The plates are very random, like they vary from the normal stainless steel ones to the patterned plastic ones. A portion of banana leaf is placed on its top.
Finally deciding on our orders, as we approached the counter, the person who managed the place was like ā Enna decide panni mudichitingala, evlo nerama decide panringa?ā :P
We ordered for Mysore Masala Dosa, Plain Masala Dosa, Nei poondu Dosa, Vadai, veg omelet and paneer kothu parotta.
So good they were. They had three different chutneys and sambar. I liked the red chutney very much. It was too good.
Veg omelet, Nei poondu dosa and paneer kothu parotta were amazing!! They are must try if you visit that place! :D
Actually the best part of the dosai is the mid portion where the crunchiest, oily and crispy portion rests! Just imagine than portion with ghee and garlic. That was foodgasm.
Veg omelet, it was a mix of wheat, kadalai maavu, onions and many more.
My friend loved it and said it's like bajji in a different form. :D
Paneer kothu parotta, was served super hot with potato kurma. Semmba. It was soft, had ample amount of crunchy onion bits with tender paneer.
Most of the orders are take away and they serve ample portion sizes.
Usually we find friendly staff in many places but here I felt the crowd was friendly too :)
The bill was around 420 rupees for five people and 9 dishes.
We then went to Amul ice cream parlour located right behind this mess, had milkshakes, icecreams and brownies :D
We then chilled out for a while at Natesan park and got back home.
But must tell you, this mess was worth the wait :)

Being in T Nagar Kannadhasan Mess named after the legendary Tamil lyricist, is always our back up plan. The taste has been maintained the same for many years which is why u will find a crowd always here during the lunch and dinner times. This time around wanted to try street food in t nagar .....googled for food trail n t nagar.... came across this place for its koththu parotta ( hope I spelled it rite ) it's an mess or u can call it n tiffin center serving idly dosa n all tiffin item all day long ....went there by 7.30 pm ....ordered koththu parotta (dry ) n curd rice .....I don't like exaggerating things but must say the best koththu parotta (vegetarian version ) ever I would give 5 for it ......but the curdrice was a downer .......I love the creamy version of it .....total VFM .....will try again ....they serve meals in the afternoon ......
This is one must visit place if you're looking for homely tiffin type. This place has existed for long and I've been there numerous times over the years and the experience has always been fulfilling. Can easily get crowded during evenings since its a small set up with slabs for standing and dining. My all time favorite are thaalitha idiyappam, thavala vada and their dosa vareities. Pricing is also nominal. Highly recommended!
