Awesome food.... great quality and quantity.... Home style.... good ambience... value for money and very important no scam like tax, vat etc...
Awesome food..... Great quality..... Good prices.... Chicken 65 kaati roll is a must try....
Tasty food .. By kumo (kumaresh)
Let me began the review with the words of my mother who is a sri Lankan. “ after 25 years i had the original taste of my country’s famous idiyappam , sodhi and seeni sambal” . You heard it guys. When you hear it from the person belongs to that land, then its legid. We ordered a variety of dishes everything was nice but we came especially for seeni sambal and sodhi and they were outstanding. Show them love guys. You’ll enjoy Sri Lankan speciality here.
Good luck THE KANDYAN crew.
PS : as i was adoring by mom’s happy face coz of the food, i forgot to capture the food.
I love the Sodhi here, never disappoints me. It goes well with puttu and idiyappam.
The prawns and fishes were top notch. There are absolutely fresh and tasty as well.
Will be back to try the rest of the menu.♥️
I am going to this place since it used to be called Ycook. They have really nice sea food, srilankan cuisine and vegetarian dishes and more. For a group of mix people, this is a good place. I like the dal fry, putty, calamari, the kathi roll.
This hidden gem was a delight to discover.
Go there if you love thalis at a reasonable rate and are craving for srilankan food..very few restaurants serve srilankan cusine .
I love their south indian thali N Pol sambol
Endless surfing in Zomato brought me to this place. No clue about what the food will be like. I just went for it. Gotta say, never been happier!
This place is right above the CCD lounge in Bessy, and I can't say much about the interiors except for some wonderful wall paintings.
The service here is too good, really. We did have to wait a while for the food to arrive but the food made our hearts content!!
We had the,
- Deviled chicken, tasted a lot like chilli chicken, nevertheless, tasted delicious.
- Red Appam with Chicken Curry, 8 pieces of appam, thought it was a lot, but ended up being right for just one individual. Thats how good it was.
- Fish Cutlet, never have I seen such a perfect starter. It tasted amazing.
- Prawn 65, we had to wait the longest for this since it was freshly prepared and when we had finally tasted it, felt like the wait was worth it.
- Paneer Sticks, was pretty good.
- Masala Omelette, no complaints here.
Couldn't try the maasi sambal and other srilankan famous specialties, but I'm pretty sure I'll try them soon enough.
So yes, they specialise in Sri Lankan cuisine which is actually an exciting thing for people who love to explore the Food scene in chennai. And oh yeah, complete VFM.
I'd say its one Hidden gem.
Can't wait to go back!!
The Kandyan is always the choice when you want light on tummy! Choose from the wide varieties of typical rice hoppers and parrotos of course the option of flour either red rice wheat or refined flour.
The clear veg soup serves even for 3 ! Worth washing your gut, before you plunge on main course.
Don’t miss the Srilankan delicacies :-)

This a cosy place in Besant Nagar, right above CCD. The staff are extremely friendly, kind and accomodating.
We had:
Potato Sodhi
Red idiyappam
Caramelised onion sambol
The food was exceptional, and very reasonably priced. It's also vegan friendly, because the Sodhi is coconut milk based.
We had a great time and we will definitely come back here.
Very nice to place
Good authentic srilankan Food which will be enjoyed by non srilankans as well. 😋
What we ordered :
Chicken curry : this was absolutely tasty. It is a bit sweet and tangy.. more of a chicken stew preparation. A good combination with idiyappam
Devilled panneer - Again very tasty
Idiyappam : they were soft and perfect 😍
The dessert we ordered is another srilankan dish which I found okay. Maybe not for me. But it definitely tasted good.
The service was fast
The ambience is also good. Nothing negative.
Price is very reasonable.
A very good restaurant to check out
Was here for dinner once during one of my visits to Chennai. Accessed through a long flight of stairs with barely any advertisement, it could easily be missed. The restaurant is cosy and small with not much of decor but most of their walls are painted by a Sri Lankan (I heard). So I spent my time waiting for a table soaking their art and sipping on some buttermilk.
We ordered some deviled chicken, chicken curry and appam, buttermilk and some lemon tea to finish off. The food we ensured was from their Sri Lankan menu and we weren't let down. We had a good time there and staff there are nice people.
Thank you for the experience :)
I wanna give these guys a 4.5/5
One good Srilankan place that is easily missed because there are no bright boards advertising them, though on a primely located right above the old CCD outlet. Yes, they have parking shared with CCD! A tall stair leads to this place and they can accommodate around 60 ppl easily hence reservations wouldn't be required. Although with an increasing crowd, the waiting time for food increases as they prepare only after orders i was told. Apart being slow, people who serve us are pleasant and polite and also help us in ordering. Not much of ambiance and interiors. But who cares if food is good! The prices are decent for the quantity served.
About the food, we took strictly srilankan. RED IDIYAPPAM 10 pieces as claimed comes in a bowl and would suffice for a person with low-moderate appetite. One needs to order the side dish for these as they don't provide any like other conventional places. So we took MIX VEG SODHI which is more of veg stew so huge in quantity though! We took PARATHA to finish up the gravy and parathas were as usual. We also tried both their SEENI SAMBOL which is a lil sour spicy caramelized onion dish we took for paratha. POL SAMBOL is a coconut based sweet which had ghee dripping and was yum! Should be a must have. To drink along, we took a buttermilk glass which had nothing special about it.
Though they have other options, this place is strictly Srilankan n hence try to order the same. They could have more options for veggies and definitely more options for something to drink. Otherwise great place n is a must visit!
You could almost miss The Kandyan as there is no obvious board leading you to it. It is on top of the Cafe Coffee Day building, with a staircase on the left leading to it.
Don't do by the basic and drab interiors. Grab a table, take hold of the menu and order away. Ask for assistance if you aren't sure what to order.
Admire the hand-painted scenes on the walls as you wait for your food to arrive. When it does you won't have time to do anything else, as you'll be busy digging in.
The Kandyan has AWESOME food! We relished everything we ordered. The Sambol was mind-blowing!
As were the Red Rice Puttu, Idiappams and Appams.
The Chicken Stew looked a bit pale, but it was packed full of flavour!
The Ginger Lemon drink is a must try too.
Special mention to Vignesh, who was handling the whole restaurant single handedly. From taking calls and orders to serving tables.
I have been to Bessy a thousand times but I did not know this place existed until a friend took me there. It's a hidden treasure! Finger licking Sri Lankan food! Do try their prawn sodhi with idiyappam! When the bill arrived I was in for a shock because it really was half of what I estimated!
Was absolutely stoked to visit this place and it didn't disappoint. A big big fan of the Devilled varieties. Had a great lunch but it's a big higher on the spice levels when compared to a typical South Indian meal. Must try the sambol!!
Was really bummed about Wattalappam not being available :(
Excellent food, friendly staff, good ambience where you can relish the yummy cuisine.. Decent seating, see thru kitchen which was really clean,. Definitely coming back. Thank you Kandyan team for a memorable dinner.. Am still licking my fingers
Last night had Dinner @ The Kandyan .. It's a small place in Besant nagar serving excellent & yummy Srilankan food 😋😋😍😍😍
Had Appam, red rice puttu & idiyappam along with Chicken Sodhi, Kizhangan fish Curry & Sambol. For a mallu like me, It was like eating our Home cooked Kerala food..so identical is their cuisine & taste.. their sambol is like our Chammandhi, sodhi is similar to our Ishtu or mapas, rest all same names. The food served was authentic, tasty & fresh with good portions and Excellent Service from smiling faces. Bill amt was 620/- Total VFM.. Must try place for good yummy food 😊
First things first, they have really an awesome line up of Sri Lankan dishes that are just a feast to taste buds.
It is One of the finest places at Besant Nagar for a pleasant casual Dinner at a very reasonable cost. This restaurant is actually a converted home with each bedrooms turned to dining halls. At nights, try to find a table in the room adjacent to the main road for a view of the Street that gets decorated by the lights of passing vehicles!!
Ordered multiple times from this outlet.Fish meals is really tasty but the price is a bit high. Ambience is also simple and lively.Good job folks.!!
Super food! Absolutely nothing to complain about. Happy with the way they've responded to the request. Food was still hot when it arrived. Satisfied.
A classic hole in the wall. With the most bare bones essentials, but a view of the street from the large window, the food is the best draw here. If you have been to Sri Lanka, you will keep going here for the deviled cuisine. It has everything that there is in Lankan food and it tastes just like Lankan food.
After a long time.. most amazing place I have been to.. good ambience, good food 🥘 clean and neat maintenance.. a big thumbs up from me 👍🏻 if anybody goes to Besant Nagar beach then must visit 👍🏻
We called the Restaurant and ordered the food via phone. Quick delivery and the food was piping hot when delivered.
My Srilankan friend said that the food tasted very Authentic of Srilankan cuisine. Fish Curry was perfectly spicy and the Coconut Chutney was yummy. Quantity was good too.
Food: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Value for Money: 4/5
Ambiance: not sure as it was a home delivery
Its a individual bungalow turned into a restaurant, with bedrooms as it's dining placed. There were many wall arts which were quite impressive to look, not many ppl know of this place except the ones residing there since it wasn't crowded even for a small place.
The food, every single dish were amazing.
Our orders:
Ghee rice and prawns sodhi:
The rice was nice and fragrant and tasted good with mixed fried onions and went well with the prawns sodhi, the gravy or the broth was a little watery but still it was lip smacking, the prawns we're really nice with enough quantity.
North Indian thali:
It came with 4pcs of roti, chicken gravy, dhal, tandoori chicken pc, potato & salad.
My friend had the thali and it was good as per his words.
Tawa Paneer Roll and Deville Prawn katti roll:
Both the rolls were really tasty, a but spicy but tasted great and the rolls were quite big.
Lassi: The lassi was nice and thick and tasted well and the masala chaas, well it's the same buttermilk with a lil bit of masala mixed and lots of coriander leaves on top.
Told the proprietor about the prawns sodhi being a little watery he said they'll correct it and let them know how I wanted the consistency to be next time.

After finishing some work in Besant Nagar, myself and wifey wanted to have lunch and we decided to have something simple and not very elaborate. As we drove along, suddenly remembered Y Cook and decided to have simple Sri Lankan food. As we entered, realized that Y Cook is now renamed to ‘The Kandyan’.
3 of us went for lunch. Ordered idiyappam, mutton gravy, chicken pepper fry, egg thokku, prawn fries, fulka, white rice, ghee rice and chicken gravy. All the items were cooked properly and tasted good. Quantity was also decent and it was about 1200 rs for 3 people. It’s a small restaurant and the only thing which I didn’t like about it was the wait time. But, it’s ok as they are preparing the food then and there and serving it for you. Even the ginger lime juice which we ordered was prepared fresh and served as per the requirements. Would recommend this place. It is located in the first floor on top of coffee day lounge
The only place in besant were I would go with full confidence about the food and the ambience. It's always on point. Talking about food, they make sure it's served at the table at the best quality without any compromise in the quantity, at the same time prices are very reasonable for such great food. Good work team, waiting for more new appetisers.
A very small restaurant.. doesn't give you a restaurant feeling. Dishes tasted good, the quantity was great, but they took too much time to serve. Few items on the menu were not available when we visited. Worth a visit for a pocket friendly lunch and an evening at beach!!
Visited this place for a quick dinner. This place is situated about CCD Lounge and finding a parking space if not difficult.
The food here was good. The Andhra Chicken Fry was outstanding. The rice and chicken pepper gravy was an excellent combo. We like the Gobi manchurian as well, it was rightly cooked.
The food here is not expensive. Definitely a dining experience one should experience and a place I would visit again.
Restaurant: Y Cook - Besant Nagar
Renamed to: The Kandyan (Zomato still shows as Y Cook, but it’s officially changed as The Kandyan)
Location: Above Coffee Day Lounge in Bessy.
For Starters: Bread crumbs chicken (around 8-10 pieces for 190₹). A good snack to start the meal. Nethili fry(160₹) as usual good. Egg podimas (60₹) good portion.
For mains: We got Ghee Rice(90₹), Basmati Rice(60₹), Red Idiyappam (10 pieces 80₹) and Red puttu (80₹) along with Prawn(130₹) and Chicken Curry(90₹) and Egg Thokku(30₹). You can opt for half portion for the curries, its more than enough. Also you can try different curries in this case. Be it rice or idiyappam, coupled with the curry it was awesome😀
Felt like eating home made food. Light and tasty.
Tips: Just go for regional food rather than Chinese. It’s totally worth it.
Four of us went and the bill amount came up to 1280₹😀
My food was completely spilt. I had to speak to the restraunt and get a replacement. Customer service via chat was about as good as your delivery which is to say, it sucked. Big time!
Since the day I arrived in Chennai, hubby wanted me to try this place. Small, cozy, not at all noisy (which I adore) happy place with very limited seating spaces. Glad we went early so got table immediately. Ordered fish curry, appam, idiappam & coconut milk. Fish was well cooked, loved idiappam. Overall a good place with reasonable rates of food. Ambience is eye catching! Walls are full of arts! ♡♡
Food was good but packaging was not good. Some of the items like rasam and curries were leaking.
malai paneer was good but malai chicken tikka was too sweet
Wish there were more chicken pieces, just had 3 pieces !!!
Amazing food as usual. ordered paneer tikka with green chutney, wheat parantha and phulka. Delicious. one suggestion: could you please use something other than aluminium foil to wrap food.
Delicious as usual. keep up the good work.
Really good food for very fair price. Keep up the good work
Food was excellent and quantity and quality wise it’s awesome. Region able rates and peace full location and beautiful view for parties it’s a nice place
O discovered this places exploring Besant Nagar. I believe it's only known to Zomato users as there is no visible billboards. I assure you that the service, food quality is as good as eating at home, the usage of oil, spices is all optimal.

Love Srilankan cuisine or want to try SL food ? This is the go to place ❤️ loved their red puttu fish curry and red idiyappam with chicken curry. Devilled chicken was a hit
If you want good appam, puttu and idiyappam with chicken and fish curry at a nominal price, this is the best. If you like Kerala food, you will like this place as they claim it’s a srilankan cuisine but stands closer to Kerala food taste. Don’t try sambol, it’s not tasting the traditional way. I am not rating this place as 5 because of the seating arrangements and slow service. It’s pocket friendly with good portion size
Just about everything I have eaten from this place is lovely. Especially love their red idiyappam and the slightly sweet/tangy brinjal curry.

Good things first . The ambience is good . it's like your bedroom with tables in it . the walls are full of wall art . coming to food , it's good and worth for money and it's pocket friendly. you also get srilankan foods here. The only problem I felt is they just have four tables and a small room and tables are small too. if you mind only for food , then you don't think about the size . overall it's a nice one
Tasty and real value for money !
As a vegetarian, was really worried while entering ! But had a sumptuous dinner including red puttu, appam, red idiyappam, veg stew and Sambal( nothing but what we call chammandi in Kerala) ... It was tasty for a picky foodie like me... I never expected this taste and quality for this price, in Besant nagar ( that too, above Coffee Day) ! The only confusion seems they are tough to spot, and the name there says "Khandiyan" and not ' Y cook' !
we are regular to Y COOK we love all item's
one of the reasonable place you can find in Bessy. they have Sri Lankan food items and indian too. I love the rolls, rajma so many items but their chicken Keema is my all tym favourite. must visit ed place.
Egg items are the best. The ambiance is very good and a nice place to eat and spend time with buddies.
Putty and idiyappam are must-try items.
The place is above CCD lounge.
Went on a sunday night...
Tables were empty at 7.30 when we went..
Ordered red idyappam, pol sambal with maasi, prawn sodhi, egg aapam and omlette..
They took around 20 minutes to deliver.. 😑
But the items were quite delicious, light for stomach and flavourful..
Srilanka is almost like a second home to my hubby who felt that sodhi must be slightly more thick in consistency.. but he enjoyed the dinner alot..
By the time we left the place, many were waiting for a table so its better to reach early for dinner especially on weekends as its a small place!
Been here for dinner ordered ghee rice, (Sankara)fish masala, egg thoku, iddiyapam with kelangu sodhi finally tried chilli chicken dry and kitchen seems transperancy and cleanliness .Food taste was good.
ghee rice well cooked 5/5
fish masala 3/5 gravy was good but fish is not cooked well raw smell was there
Kezhangu sodhi nice 4/5
egg thokku 4/5 good
iddiyapam softy 5/5
Chilli chicken 3.5 /5 average
A restaurant to worth for dine in.
Restaurant located in the street of Besant nagar and it's a calm place easy to find. Mostly srilankan dishes are in menu. We ordered red idyappam, kezhangu sodhi, veg, fish and chicken meals. Red idyappam was fluffy and well cooked and well matched with kezhangu sodhi which is prepared with potato it's was not much spicy. Fish and chicken curry was good too. Very calm ambiance.
A simple eatery where one can head for a pleasant and calm dining experience.....food here is just fab .. The srilankan idiyappam is a must try and they give a lot of quantity ...best part is my tummy didn't feel heavy inspite of me overeating!
After some searches with google maps, found this place. The curiosity comes as they are serving Srilankan Dishes. Despite less Veg dishes, i went for a shot to know what they are offering in Veg.
My bad time, they don't have Appam. It was dinner time and so i didn't opted for Rice.
Red Idiyappam and Veg Sodhi - This tastes delicious. The sodhi (Stew) with vegetables in Coconut milk is tastier.
The ambience is peace and calm as the restaurant is on top of CCD and there were no crowd even in the road by 8. The service was good. Would love to try Appam with Sodhi once and also for Lunch.
A good calm place to have food.
Went to the restaurant admist heavy downpour. The food was very tasty and very soothing to the climate. The soup that was served was too much that we were unable to finish even half of the content (though it was 1/2). Food was very good and I loved chicken a lot. Chicken was soft and perfectly cooked. Must try
The quality and taste is good. The food was delivered in good condition.
Ambience was good.
Satisfied food
Worth for money!!
Pleasant service from each staff.
Will be good if you increase seating to avoid rush in reception.
We were a group of 6 people and had gone for an early dinner.
We had ordered schezwan fried rice, red rice Puttu, red rice idiyappam, nethily Sodhi, Sini Sambhal Masi and coconut milk.
Schezwan fried rice was the usual fare.
The house special was Sini Sambhal Masi which was delicious. The last time I had such a mouthwatering Masi was my grandmother's preparation. If you have ever eaten Masi, you should try this one for old time's sake.
The Puttu and idiyappam was made of red rice which was very flavorful. The coconut milk was rich and creamy and the nethily Sodhi was also a perfect accompaniment.
The decor was minimal but pleasant.
We had trouble finding the place. Had it not been for Google Maps, it would have been very difficult to reach this place as they have no big hoarding or lettering.
There was also only one person who was serving the entire crowd. Hence the serving time was much longer than expected.
This place is not a huge restaurant but looks like an apartment converted to a restaurant.
If you are in the mood for some authentic Sri Lankan cuisine and in the neighborhood, don't miss this place.
Total value for money and I highly recommend it.
One of the underrated places. Quick review - value for money, pocket friendly, great taste.
Indian main dishes - bread varieties, idyappam, appam felt light unlike your typical thick and heavy type.
Must try - sodhis, Sri Lankan stews. Especially prawn sodhi if you prefer sea food over meet. Try with it either idyappam or appam. Seeni sambol - a great blend of onion and tomato, basically a Sri Lankan thokku which goes well with almost all your main dishes.
Service is a bit slow because all your dishes are made to order. Hence your dishes ends up fresh on your table, giving it a home made feel.
Being an Indo-lankan citizen I searched for srilankan Cuisine in chennai and found this hidden gem. Their flavour was authentic and original Ceylon flavour. The food was very tasty and high quality. The person who came and took our order was really good and helpful. The serving person doesn't understand either Tamil or English. Srilankan's are famous for their hospitality but upon entering the premises a lady sat at front doesn't give a damn to you and watches serials on mobile that too with loud volume. Even if you asked for any assistance from her she never gave a damn. So far me and my husband have visited this restaurant twice and experience with that lady was the same. This made the whole mood go off. But I would suggest everyone who wants to try Ceylon Cuisine here. The food was really good and the price was moderate. Usually this place is not very crowded so they will prepare the food and hand it over quickly
Kandyan is the most closest experience to Sri Lankan cuisine in Chennai
A very unassuming place with staff who more than make up for any lacunae.
We tried the Pol Roti, Jeera Rice, Chicken Curry, Pol Sambol with fish powdered into it & Prawn Thokku.
The Pol Roti was spot on, rest were good too but was a bit Indianised version.
The place was quite empty when we went for lunch. Guess one can venture a walk in.
There is sufficient parking behind the building.
Overall a very good restaurant serving Sri Lankan fare which is almost like home cooked food.
The Kothu Idiyapam was so tasty , we tried pol roti ,kathrika curry and seeni sambal all was very good tasted like authentic Sri Lankan food .
Why cook when you can get your comfort food delivered at your doorstep from Y Cook in Besant Nagar? Formerly known as Y Cook and presently as The Kandyan, this restaurant specialises in home style Sri Lankan food, though there are South and North Indian options on the menu as well. We decided to go Sri Lankan and ordered the Idiyappam made with red rice, Pol Roti, Pol Sambol and Seeni Sambol (both with Masi), Dhal Fry, the Prawn Sodhi and some Fried Shankara Fish on the side. The food was simple but excellent, exactly as home food ought to be! My only crib was that the dishes seemed overly priced for the quantity delivered.
You can get some authentic tastes of Srilanka. Though the dishes are similar or same as South Indian dishes they were able to maintain the srilankan touch in it. Service is good but feel like understaffed.
It's a very simple place with a pleasant atmosphere. Food tastes very good and the pricing is in the mediocre range. The surroundings are maintained very clean. Many wall paintings that will really keep you wondering and staring at the wall. See through kitchen. Vast parking space available even though there is a Cafe downstairs. Simple place great food.
You can hardly make out that there is a restaurant functioning here. No prominent name boards, no indication of a restaurant, while the CCD lounge is the only happening place in the whole building. This place is located right on top of it, on the first floor. There is car parking inside, right behind the building. decided to eat only Sri Lankan specialities though the menu had Indian food too. I did see quite a few of them order North Indian and South Indian food here, left me wondering why one would choose Indian food at a speciality Sri Lankan restaurant. Well, we ordered Red Rice Idiyappam (10 pcs), White Puttu, Pol Sambol, Chicken Curry (Half portion), Egg Thokku, and Devilled Chicken. Most of these I’ve tasted during my last visit when this place was Y Cook, so not elaborating.
We loved the food, no complaints at all! We paid a little over five hundred rupees for a nice meal.
Their food can never disappoint you.Service takes time but Completely worth for your money. ❤️ Try all their dishes. My favorites include their chicken 65, south Indian non- veg meals (has one lip smacking egg thokku) . Their idiyappam and sodhi stands out in taste. Simple yet the best!
Our go to place since they opened. Idiyappam, appam, stew, sambal and prawn kathrikai are our favourites. Love their clean kitchens, simple ambience and great food. Food has been consistent for years (since their Y Cook days!) and totally reasonable with their pricing. If you're thinking SriLankan, this is the place to go!
We wanted Appam and Cocout milk , it was already late we were not able to find any restaurant that serves Appam and coconut milk and finally around 9: 30pm we called and asked them to wait till we come , they patiently waited and served us. Food was on point. I missed to take pic of the Appam. Kothu idiappam tasted good too.
Home cooked food in a tasteful ambiance is Kandyan for you. In the offering are South and North Indian as well as Sri Lankan cuisines. Must try.
After visiting that place I have often wondered why the publicity is so low key. Even the name board has been hidden away.
fish curry is the best ive ever had.
pol sambal for fishy flavours. must try.
ignore that fool with you in the car who wants to go somewhere else.
A quaint little restaurant that serves srilankan food. This fulfilled my srilankan cravings. Must try are Pol sambal, crispy appams, red idiyyapams and brinjal fry.
The best restaurant to try srilankan foods. The tastes are simply amazing. The authentic dishes are idiyaappam thengapal aapam sodhi and Motta thokku. Must try dishes. They will prepare our dishes only after we order so it will take some time. A good place to hangout with family and friends.
One of the best places for Srilankan cuisine in Chennai. They have amazing varieties of sodhi. Also, usual South and North Indian cuisines are also available.
As a fan of local and traditional food, I loved this restaurant along with my friends.. Been there thrice till date and every time they amazed with the fresh and mouth watering taste of cuisine.. Don't know the amount of idiyappam (both red n white) I put inside my stomach, the gravy and the side dishes are the culprits coz whom I couldn't keep the count, besides that when you are with a group with good appetite, you should not count what you eat, can count later.. An amazing place I would suggest to anyone who would love to try Sri Lankan food with a tinge of Naga Chilli..
