We were tired working from morning so me and my colleagues wanted a break went to Saravana and ordered chat..we really enjoyed the chat dishes,.I totally loved bhel and paani Puri...Really had a very good break and enjoyed it to the core
The major thing i love about Saravana bhavan is the quality and standard of the food they maintain. You get the best sambar with different variety of chutneys at this restaurant. Had Ghee dosa here at this branch and it tasted great. And mini idli dipped in sambar with full of ghee made my day.
Happened to pop in here for meals on their founders day which is when they serve only special meals at a discounted rate of Rs 80...
We had to wait for a table for 20 minutes....
Upon seated we were had our leaves placed in front of us... We were served Chakkara Pongal, Vada, and Jangiri as appetizers...
Moving on to the main part of the meal, we were served two types of vegetable kootu, cabbage poriyal which had to be eaten with sambhar, dal and ghee, rasam, kaara kuzhambu and more (curd)...
Everything on the menu was exceptional.. special mention to the murunga sambhar which tasted out of this world...
Meal ended with jack fruit ice cream and bananas...
Serve was exemplary and we were never rushed though there was a hoard of people waiting to be seated..
Another special mention goes out to the server at our table, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi was very friendly and did not hesitate to fulfill our requests...He was prompt and made us enjoy the experience of proper Special South Indian meals...
Loved our experience... Worth the visit...
I like the location of the place, under the flyover.ee generally visit this place when we are in gopalapuram. You can deny the taste of soft idlis and the yummy sambar.
You can go there for simple and quick bite.
No parking
Service fine
Food good
Family restaurant
One of the Chennai's fav restaurant chain for veggies. It has a pocket-friendly combo option which includes a meal with a drink. Though it has lost the charm that had a decade ago for the taste of the sambhar. Its still one of the most popular visited restaurant in Chennai.
À lègendary chain outlet which has not only established itself in Tamil Nadu and some parts of south of India but even in the hinterlands of videsh as we know. Simple yet subtle and you can very much see how new innovative offers such a as 1+1 coffee and light meals, mini meals are showing that to survive in this age of competition one truly needs to adapt and yes they have adapted to quite an extent
Being an authentic south flavoured recipes I never indulged in eating north Indian food items at all . As it really doesn't signify or glorify in a place like this . It's like coming drinking tea in a roadside shop and asking him for a Darjeeling tea . It truly doesn't signify . Yes they do accomdate to other cusines but the speciality,/saote is south Indian .
Ardent fan of these outlets who truly survive and adapt
Went to this restaurant for Dinner, ordered Kara Dosai, Poori Masala and Ghee Roast. Kara Dosai was really amazing in taste, Poori Masala was accompanied with an additional side dish Dhal along with Potato Masala tasted good, where as the Ghee Roast was a total failure for Rs 125/- which worried me a bit, as far as me HSB stands for Quality.

We had a plain dosai and filter kaapi. The dosai was decent. The onion chutney was pretty good, as was the sambar. The kaapi was excellent.
The service was swift.
Mouthwatering & authentic dishes with quick service and hospitality is what is the specialty of this restaurant! Really came out satisfied today !!
It's on the road coming out if sathyam to Anna Salai beneath the flyover. They have two joints - gf and ff.. taste like any other hsb and service is not so great. It can be crowded and your hunger will increase your anger
I have never been a fan of HSB, I don't why. I wasn't satisfied with their food. But, I must say, I just love their coffee. It is really good. The rating is just for the coffee.
Edit 09-10-2018. Ordered breakfast. Ghee uthappam, uppma & puri. All were good.
Too good vada-sambhar, excellent aapams and the ghee roast dosa is an epic dish of Sarvanna Bhawan! For South food lovers this place is a paradise!
A group of 5 of us went here for dinner. We had the buffet that cost us 350 per person inclusive of taxes.
The place is like any other restaurant, and surprisingly was not at all crowded on a sat night.
The food spread was lot for the rate. It had a mixture of both the north Indian and south Indian dishes.
The food tasted not great, but good for the price.
Service was a little poor@. The refilling of the starters were very slow. It took almost 20 mins for the starters to be replaced.
An average place with a decent spread of items for the price.
This is a classic south Indian Restaurant and has a lot of outlets over Chennai. This has two options buffet or Ala Carte. We went for Ala Carte instead of buffet.
The best and a must try food here is idli with 5 chutneys. They serve 5 idlis along with 5 different types of chutneys. The chutneys are really tasty and with every penny.
This is a small restaurant in the main road, no separate parking. There are no tables or ac. It's a stand and eat.
It's good for an early morning breakfast and juice or coffee.
Good one for south Indian breakfast
A decent place for the South Indian dishes, as usual this place is carrying the authentic taste of HSB. But it is a bit cramped place, self-service counter at ground floor is faster than the first floor restaurant so I always prefer it when I'm time bound.
Service is good in this place than the other HSB outlets, the major problem will be parking if you are coming by car.
Over all it is same HSB with some old values.
A good place for traditional South Indian food. Went here for breakfast and had their dosa. It was good and was served to me in next to no time.
Paper roast and filter coffee from saravana bhavan can make my da any day! Been here a couple of times. There's an ac restaurant as well as an open standing counter. I prefer the latter. The ac is insanely priced. Hygienic and deliciously south Indian, this place.
This place needs no review , has been there for years , quick service , the idli dosa haven for Chennai for a long time. Parking is a hassle but the place is good for south indian.

I'll start off with the ambience, it was great. The food was decent. Had a paneer fried rice which tasted bland. Their garlic rice too had a lot of garlic, just that it wasn't cooked well, there wasn't any flavor of garlic in it. Their quick lunches are really very good and cost effective. A decent place over all
Final score:
Food: 3
Ambience 4
Service 3.5
Quantity 3.5
Saravana bhavan has been like a home for me when it comes to food . I relish the taste of everything I eat there especially South Indian dishes like idly , dosa. It's such a place that weekly I spend time eating there atleast twice .

Who doesn't love this place? The food - totally love it. The taste, the service. Everything is just so good about Hsb. Not only this branch. All the branches. I love this buffet this branch has - there is so much to choose from and for such a less price!

Just back from one of the tastiest dining places in the city. Okay being from Bombay is a disadvantage that we don't realise that the restaurant shut pretty early in other cities. So , our front office manager at Marriott suggested we must go here for an authentic meal. We stepped in here. Pretty crowded but managed getting a table. The menu is like a manuscript :p My friend studied it for long ( there are too many combo meals n trust me its difficult to choose one ) after taking our own sweet time we decided our preferred combo meals only to realize that at time we would only get Dosas n Idlis. So we had Masala dosas n something which they call Mini Idlis. I'm a fan of crispy dosas and this place gave me exactly that. Super super super amazing crispy yummy masala and sada dosas served wid three different kinda chutneys. Mini idlis are dunked in ghee n sambar. I think they do have the tastiest Sambar. Masala chaas was called for to digest the amount of repeats that we had of the above. Can't wait to have the combos next time I go here :)

The traditional authentic south indian hotel..
Exquisite taste..
The HSB food is the best..!
One good place for south indian food.........
As soon as you enter this Hotel Saravana Bhavan (HSB) a rare fragrant wind calms our troubled mind. Cleanliness, orderliness and symmetry of dining area gives you such warmth and excitement that takes you miles away from harsh realities of life. The irresistible rise of HSB was nothing short of miracle.
Around 15 years back idlies of HSB was breaking news in our friends circle. Our office-hours were happily spent describing the soft, rich-white colored, miraculously-light, delicate idlies.
Steaming idlies were always served as though it were a fragile object of immense value. Flavor of the spicy deep brown Sambar always live up to the expectation. Pure white coconut chutney is simply exquisite. Tomato chutney is deep red and delicious. It fills the stomach without being heavy.
This chain of restaurant has a reputation to keep up as the Kings of restaurants in Chennai and they do it with ease because of their organisational ability and setting high standard for its food quality and ensuring that guests receive the same quality with every meal. In brief, HSB gave Chennaites a glimpse of how a successful restaurant would work.
South Indian Breakfast Combos are the best. There are 12 types of combos. I've tried everything. Extremely delicious. Nobody can prepare authentic south Indian food as these guys do. If you visit Chennai, you must visit this place. End your meal with a hot cup of special coffee. It'll make your day perfect.
Be it the ambience, hygiene, quality in terms of food and service, they stand tall. As far as the digestive system is concerned, I can vouch you in safe hands, just like "Mom". Quantity though is rationed, the food never lets you down. This joint is recommended highly for family and friends equally, a place you will definitely revisit again and again!
But I think they should go back to make their famous mini idlies.
I have been here many times. Due to heavy crowd and lack of space, the service is quiet slow. Dosa, Idly, Mini Idlis, Coffee and Tea are my regular orders. The food tastes good. Due to small restaurant size, I prefer takeaway. Their Special Mixture snack is always fresh. I once ordered Pav Bhaji, since these guys are typical South Indian cooks, it lacks the North Indian flavor.
If you are planning for a long drive/picnic with family and don't have time to prepare breakfast, then HSB is a best option.
We dropped in for a treat at the buffet place in HSB .. And for 300 bucks it's awesome .. The spread is a pretty decent one with about 22 items on the table ..
The refilling part was a bit letdown apart from that no issues what so ever .. It's your money's worth this buffet
Go and have a dig :-D
Of late, the traditional quality, & unique taste of Saravana Bhavan has been lost!!! Maybe the combos have killed the pleasure of having the Appam-ThengaPaal combo, the parotta with white kurma, the Pav Bhaji, and the Masala Milk!!! Maybe the administrators need to have a second look.
Above average place to eat Madrasi food , not great for Chinese and cakes. Must try their Real Ice creams though, extremely good natural content and flavour.
Coffee is great here ask for it in the "Dabra set".
14 button idly in ghee sambhar a must have. Wide variety of dosa available here - lived Ghee Paper Roast Dosa
After sweating it out for nearly 2 hours, my friend and I went to have a hearty breakfast. We first went to the 2nd floor where there is an all you can eat buffet. While the offer was enticing, we decided against it and went in for the ala carte, which was one floor below.
This is a slightly up market version of the usual Saravana Bhavan's. Its got a little more rich look/ feel, with heavy brass cutlery and also dim lighting. The quality of the food though stays the same. So there is no complaint on that. This is a good option in case you want to go for a slightly more business like meal.
The only vegetarian hotel near US embassy. Eventhough the taste is somewhat good the food prices are too much.
Decent restaurant . price too high. Taste gud.
Hotel Saravana Bhavan has long lost its charm and awe. For me now it is the last option if there are no other places to go or if I had to finish off a quick lunch and it is the only option nearby. Their veg meals are definitely overpriced. I tried their special veg meals which had a sweet, raita and curd in addition to their regular meals. It costs Rs120 and the rice they provide is not sufficient to satiate the hunger.
Nice food. But there is no chairs available you have to stand and eat. But everything else is good. Also cold water is available
This is a famous veg restaurant, I have been eating here since childhood. For decades this restaurant is famous for its sambar ! We went here for lunch and had a set combo with a Vazlai elai virundu. The food here is simply tasty and sumptuous. An alternative to those who miss home in Chennai. Parking is near the hotel but limited space . 👍🏻✌️
As of today, you won't find Sarvana Bhavan (SB) anywhere in India or for that matter anywhere in Tamil Nadu except for Chennai. If you're visiting Chennai, having a thali at this restaurant should be #1 on your to-do list.
PS - There are a lot of SBs internationally though
A decent fast food restaurant. Food quality is okay and pricing and quantity is fine. They have adequate seating. Ambiance is okay and hygiene require attention. They have a restroom but require better maintenance. Parking is available but not friendly due to access issues. The restaurant is not wheelchair friendly.

Very decent hotel. Felt the items were a bit overpriced , but the quality makes the above claim vague. Overall loved it
Nice restaurant. You will find good variety and combos
Age old establishment serving delicious South Indian cuisine. I loved it four years ago, but during my visit six months ago, I felt somewhat dampened by the overall experience. Interiors of the establishment need to be spruced up a bit. Food quality was ok, not the mind blowing type I had earlier. Hope it improves.
Awesome food, lived upto the hype
Is the most successful chain of restaurants in India. Quite hygienic food. Reasonably priced. Very quick and efficient service. Now various mini combos and bulk order for tiffin and coffee have made the hotel quite popular with people of all age groups
