Thanjavur Mess in West Mambalam is one of the very old joints that serves good vegetarian food. Tired of the usual places in Velachery, a friend and I decided to have breakfast here!. I was told that the place opens by 7AM, so we were quite late by that standard. It was almost 09:30 AM by the time we reached the place. Its in one of the narrow lanes called Subbareddy Street, so you’re better off with a two wheeler than a four wheeler.
It’s a cheap and good place for students and freshers starting their career. They provide good quality food for a reasonable price. The workers serve their food with happiness.
Rava Dosa at its best. A typical TamBrahm restaurant to enjoy at very reasonable price. But a little bit of improvement in terms of hygiene is highly required.. Cheers :)
Visited this tambrahm establishment for breakfast- parking might be a problem for cars. Nei podi dosa was excellent, chutney sambar vadacurry and vada were good. Coffee was decent, but I expected better. Ambience leaves a lot to be desired. Good value for money though.
This shop located in small street in west mambalam is a must visit breakfast place for Chennaiites. Try different dosa varieties especially with ghee, you will feel the aroma of ghee even after you swallow down. My fav being ghee podi onion dosa. Their sambar and chutney wer so good.
Ignore the Ambience bit noisy cos too many peoples coming for parcel orders and Few servers show grin face while others are enthusiastic.
You should go early on sundays to enjoy Kumbakonam kadappa - a white mixed veg gravy suits with idli and dosa.

A must try affordable pure veg hotel in west mambalam. Excellent service. Very exciting thing here is tht 20/- parcel packet is available for each sambar, kootu, poriyal, karakuzhambu. The sambar here has a real mouth watering taste.
Don't know why some people had given negative comments.The food was great.Upma was average.Idlis were piping hot and coconut chutney was awesome.Authentic tambrahm cuisine with good sambar.
But rice upma could have been better.
Typically Iyer Mess and taste wise its good, but roads leading to this place is very poorly maintained and very narrow. Little overpriced and not a great quality that u can expect Good interiors, recently renovated, but kinda okies mess

No nonsense, simple place for South Indian tiffen style food. I prefer this place though there are many choices around the area. They offer tasty food at a very fair price, if you want to finish a light dinner for 2 in less than 200 and feel good, this is the place.
It is quite crowded at times so if you are crowd averse please order take-away. No parking available nearby for cars, two wheelers can manage.
They are known for their Kaddpah, I love the Rava dosa here.

We ordered Dosa and Vada. Dosa was crisp and perfect amount of oil. Vada was extraordinary it was really crisp and golden hue which was just perfect.
we went with a half stomach and just the taste of sambar made my stomach go negative. It was yummy home food. Sambar was highlight and Strong filter coffee wasn't strong enough but still made my day. the bill is so good for bachelors and we saw many people taking parcel.
ambience didn't matter as taste took a clean bowl.
just heaven in mouth!!

An typical Bhramin hotel. Visited only few times. In rice you will feel some bad aroma. Other than rice other items were just average. It's like just to to fill the hunger. Normally mess available in Kumbakonam tanjore you will like to eat mess foods. But here that temptation is missing.
South Indian food with the authentic taste as made in Tamil Nadu. The sambar is the highlight and also the ghee roast is amazing. It is a must visit, if you are around West mambalam. Also the hotel is looking good after the renovation.

Just the perfect place for a quick homely tasty simple south Indian meal. Unlike the oily complicated meals of the saravana bhavans in Chennai, this place serves you the basic rice , sambar, kara kuzhambu, rasam,curd , papad, poriyal lunch. You should be lucky to find a seat during lunch hours. A true honest meal place in the heart of chennai.
Authenticate place for veg food. They serve tasty ghee roast, semiya upma and oothapam. Planning to visit again to taste other items. Worth for money.
The food is amazing here 4.5/5. Homely and very tasty 😋. Idlis are jusst amazing. Do not take your car 🚗 as there is no space for parking. On the hygiene front, I will rate them a 2 on 5.

Thanjavur mess is a God send on weekends when you don't want to cook but still want to eat homely food. It is the best iyer sappadu mess in the vicinity. Their meals is epic, the quantity is so great that we buy only 2 meals for our family of 4. I lovelovelove their arachuvitte sambar and rasam. But the ambience can be such a turn off. So take away if you don't want the mood kill.
Full marks to food items they serve. Try the Ghee podi dosa, godumai dosa, rava pongal, curd rice with vethai kozambhu. Sambar and chutney were excellent mainly coconut chutney. Economically priced. Seats upto 12 persons.

Was their last sunday for breakfast. Had idly, vada, & rava upma. Visited them around 9.30AM and they ran out of ven pongal. They serve kadapa on sunday.
Idly was ok.
Vada was all out of shape.
Rava upma was oily and spicy.
Chutney was good, sambar was ok. Kadapa was diluted.
It costed around Rs. 65/ vfm.
Excellent iyer style vegeterian food. Quality and tasty. Worth the price. Loved the rava pongal. Delight is the curd rice and vathal kulambu combination. Cant beat that taste

I read about this place in a foodie forum. People were raving about how the food tastes like at home and the unusual combos you get.So tried it tonight for dinner.
The place is easy to find and the first thing you'll notice is the below average ambiance. But the tables were clean.Only 3 tables and the place looked a bit cramped. I have heard that the people here serve customers exactly from 7 PM.I was there by 6:55 and I was asked to sit.At sharp 7 they placed banyan leaf and took orders.kudos to the punctuality.
My order was simple.Podi dosa and their unusual arisi upma vathakzhambu combo. Dosa was crisp and good. Sambar was good but the chutney stole the show.It was so thick and yummy! The staff kept filling the sides. Arisi upma vathakozhambu combo was killer.Just as it would be if we had it at home.Not much oil and tasted heavenly. The kohambu even had pieces of appalam :D The food was both light on stomach and wallet. Total bill came to 60.
If you want home like food and anywhere near this place do give a visit. not ideal for family to dine in according to me.
Very good place for veg homely food. Must experience if you are a veg lover. Adai aviyal is my all time favourite. Many bachelors are regular customers for a long time.
Honestly speaking this place serves food which tastes like your home food, their food is good. This place serves full south Indians meals/lunch from 10 am. This place has been frequented by family people and bachelor's alike. In the night they serve curd rice with vathal kuzhambu. On Sundays during break fast they serve a side dish called kadappah which is unique to their place. Its a comfort food for tummy as if mummy is serving
A meal zone.. honestly.. If you want to have a full stomach on an afternoon do visit thw shop.. also I would like to notify that the ambience would be rated as 1/5.. so if possible get a parcel which can feed 2 members for sure..

I have been a regular to this place for close to 10 years now and can vouch that consistency is their forte. Before even I start with a detailed review, let me make it clear. If you are a family looking for dining experience in a great ambience please don't even give this place a thought. This is truly a place for rooted residents of west mambalam and the wider iyer & iyengar community and more specifically bachelors. It is often crowded and when you eventually manage to grab a seat and eat, you know the reason for this steady stream of people waiting. They have a standard fixed menu consisting only of south Indian cuisine. Breakfast and dinner menu consists of the likes of idli, dosa varieties, pongal, poori , chappathi etc and you also have the option of taking curd rice with tasty vattha kuzhambu. A proper unlimited lunch in authentic thanjavur taste is their strong point. The USP of this place is the authentic kadappa (a unique sambar like side dish for idli dosa served in the interiors of thanjavur) that is served on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings. Probably the only place in Chennai serving kadappa. Also please note that the place is closed on Tuesdays. Overall an excellent place to enjoy the thanjavur taste if you are single, taste-driven guy or prefer take-away.
Perfect place for veggie bachelors in and around west mambalam. As already discussed, limited no of seats, no a/c, no parking facility. Typical mess. But the taste matters. Dosas are really good and this is one of the must try hotel for veggies. Perhaps takeaway could be a better option.

The two reviews were positive that encouraged me to try this place.
This mess is deep inside west mambalam. This review is for lunch take away because there were only 3 tables to sit and eat and the time I visited was too early for my lunch.
Full meals - contains veggies plus curd some extra items.
Half meals- regular meal without curd and appalam.
Everything is readily packed.
The sambar was nice typical homemade. Decent quantity.
Rasam- again homemade taste adequate quantity.
Vegeatable or poriyal was packed separately which was highly appreciable. Quantity was generous. Taste was again homemade.
Rice- generous portion. Being a moderate eater everything was more than adequate.
Cost- 70 to 90 for parcel. Keeps increasing.
Dine in meals is served in banana leaves so it gives homely feel.
People looking for ambience, A/C etc may not relish this place.
Those put up in west mambalam can try this place. Worthy fresh homely food.

One of the super authentic and old style mess in the heart of West Mambalam. The parking is a super huge problem - car is a big no no. Breakfast and lunch is amazing! Evening food is a must try. The best part is the sambhar. You also get sambhar ,rasam,kootu,pooriyal all separately- and this comes as a boon to bachelors and senior people. It always has floating crowd and they also sell best floured coffee powder which is a must try. Must check into this place for a brand new experience.They are also on SWIGGY,one can order them too.

VFM restaurant. Finding it for the first time will be difficult. Parking will be difficult because the streets are very congested. Opening from 7" morning. Kadappa available only on Sunday. Always crowded after 8 am especially on Sundays. Crispy vada is must have. Uppma and curd rice available in night.

Food is too tasty. Normal lunch with Rasam, Sambar, Curries. But awesome
Good place for tiffen items. Sambar chutneys, qurma, masala, rava dosa, plain dosa, poori, chole masala and all are good here....Lunch is balanced and healthy but very average on taste. Rasam tastes like waste water...main problem with Lunch is sambar rasam and all will have raw uncooked taste of the ingredients used, especially chilli powder...
