One of the most inexpensive and elegant sea food experiences you'd come across in the city. What caught my heart at first was the 'fresh off the boat ' area where they exhibit the freshly caught fishes and you could get to choose one from there for a dish if a feasible choice.
Also the dishes off the menu were also equally interesting, powered by an authentic south tamil Nadu scent. This cuisine is definitely gets you craving for more, hands down. Had a strong urge to strom the place back again but had to leave Chennai because of the lockdown.
Also wait, unlike the usual souvenir with the bill they serve you with groundnut candies ;)

After my usual January break i did get back to eating out and what better place than Sea Salt which has been in my wishlist since its opening..Though their kari soru and Prawn pepper fry were the items which i wanted to try i was here to experience the Pulicat Seafood Festival happening from the 31st of Jan to the 2nd of feb..This is done is Collab with Chennai Kalai Theru Vizha and InSeason Fish...

Unlike most festivals that happen just to attract crowd this is a one with a difference..Done with a noble cause to create awareness for protection of Pulicat wetlands..We had a nice chat with Nityanand Jayaram and Chaitanya who talked about the danger these areas are facing and also the need to save our fish resources..

Enough of the cause now lets come to the food..The Menu is designed By Chef Harish Rao in Collab with fishermen and the women from pulicat region..The Recipes are regular house old ones which are presented as it is..And the Catch are from the Pulicat lake only...

We did try the Non Veg Thali - Pulicat Seafood Thali priced at 595rs..Given below are the details about it..

We Started of with a yummy Nandu rasam in a small cute tumbler..The Rasam was spicy and peppery and some thing a sore throat will be thank full to..The generous crab pieces in the Rasam were an added advantage..

As starters there were some lip smackingly good prawn Vada...A bit tangy in taste but loaded with aroma and perfectly fried..

Next item was the Yera Karakal Which are basically small prawns cooked in loads of sea salt and spices..Served with the skin it was one of a kind experience..

Lady Fish Fry : A typical fish fry but one thing that stood out was the freshness..Easy to eat due to the delicate meat..

Mackerel Puttu : A different fish puttu for a change...Loved this one thanks to the well cooked mackerel meat..The taste was really good too..

As the Main Course there was a tasty Prawn Biryani which i liked very much thanks to its subtle flavoring..The Aroma was mild and had everything i love in a biryani..

The Gravy section had three distinct ones in the Form of Pulicat Meen Kozhambu, Meen Mitha/Bitta and Nandu Masala..Option to pair it with White Steamed rice each gravy was better than the other..

The Meen Mitha/Bitta is a usual thing cooked in my home and here it was decent to say the least..Fried fish is tamarind less gravy..Juicy and fresh fish here too..

The Pulicat Meenu Kozhambu was something i loved the most in the Thali..With a fresh fish here too in a yummy gravy..Paring it with white rice and the puttu was a bliss..Recommended..

Nandu Masala was good too..With a spicy and peppery masala..

Prawn Pickle was also served and let me tell you that this was best i have ever had..Loved this so much that we asked if they retail it..

Some sides on the Thali were a Pudina Chutney and Brinjal Chutney and the Onion Raita..

The Thali also had a Rose flavored Kheer..Too good..I had subtle sweetness with aptly flavored..

There were separate desserts in for of Payasam which was a supposed pulicat variant of the kozhukattai payasam..Decent one..Finished off the meal with a Banana..

IMO this thali was completely worth it..The Festival happening till the 2nd of feb is something worth trying for the yummy food and the noble cause..There are also some musical performance on these days..so book your tables right away..

As for me i loved the food and definitely visiting again to try some more items for sure pretty soon..Will update once i do that..

The Sandy's team has a clear winner. Could not get enough of my dinner here. We were welcomed with some complimentary sweet pongal (since it was pongal) and chose a 1.2 kg northern red snapper from the display. The fillets were pan fried with their uthukuli butter sauce (made with pepper, curry leaves and sambar onions). It was absolutely brilliant. The head and tail was used in a meen maanga curry. The curry was packed with the flavour of the fish and the raw mango with some heat and generous julliened ginger. We ordered some appams to go with it that were flawless. Even their Nannari sarbat was a class apart. If you have kids, they have a coloring set to help them pass the time while your fish is lovingly prepared. And they even hang up the drawings for them to come back and see next time, and I assure you, there will be a next time.

I wish that it was a wheelchair accessible location and I hope its successful enough to move to a place like that.

Forever wanted to go here and finally had the chance. If you love home cooked meals, just close your eyes and go here. You'll thank me later. Such yum soulful food.

Located above Sandy's in Knk road, this is a very simple place that looks classy and comfy. They specialize in sea food, so they have live counters from where you can select you own and they'll make it into a scrumptious meal.

Coming to the food, we ordered green chili chicken for starters. It was outstanding. The taste was so good. Must try.
Then we had parota and nei roast chicken. Another must try for sure. The parota was super soft and the chicken's flavor was mouth watering.
For rice we got Era soru. This is their version of prawn biryani. Again, another must try. So flavourful and perfectly spiced.
In addition to this we got one omlette and kalaki. Both tasted good
For drinks, the nannari sharbath and Buttermilk are a must. Both tatsed excellent.
And for dessert we ended with elaneer payasam. Takes you straight to heaven. Perfect amount of sweet. Must try again!

Pricing is a bit on the high side for the quantity they give. That's why I've given 4 stars or i would have definitely given a 5. But for the quality and taste, it's worth it.

Service is super friendly. Special mention to the Akka who works there. So sweet.

100% going back again to eat more.

Bon appetite :)

The seating is simple without too much of detailing. The staff welcomed us with a warm
Smile and helped with recommendations for the food. Everything was good except for the squid, it wasn’t as fresh as expected. The top picks is the parotta, madras fish curry and the pepper prawns. Overall a good place for South Indian sea food lovers.

After my friend suggestions I have visited here with my wife for lunch. We ordered kalakki, karichoru, plain rice and prawn thokku. The ambience, staff, and servings are up to the mark. The cleanliness and hygiene needs a special mention. They kept every section clean including washroom, wash area and kitchen.
Complimentry sundal was good. The curry rice and kalakki also super tasty. The prawn thokku tastes more like tomato tokku. The prawns flavour not enough in the gravy, I expect the masala was cooked and kept early. Just add prawns and make in to a prawn thokku after the order......just guess....
Any way, the kadala muttai is super addicted at the end.
I have only one suggestion here, the price is high for the quantity they serve. As per Zomato for two, costs 500 and that is impossible if you order even with 3 course meal.........400 rs for curry chorus = 🔪.

Fresh and sustainably sourced fish that's in season. Delectable food. The ambience is neat and bright. There's a counter that has the catch of the day. You get recommendations, but make sure you are comfortable with the pricing per 50 or 100 gms. Menu is small but has a good spread to choose from.
In pictures - Kari choru , parotta with prawn thokku, fish fry.

A Finest sea food restaurant in Chennai's prime location @ Nungambakkam which serves authentic food.
They have live fish counter where you can choose fish of your own choice along with level of spices you prefer.
Food was tasty but the quantity is less for the price. Since everything was prepared freshly there was a delay in the service.
Overall best place to visit along with your family.

On of the best Sea Food themed restaurant in the City, located at my favourite food spot of Chennai. This is the first place as far as I know* where fishes, crabs and lobsters are alive and not killed. When we order only the lobster is taken out to cook. This is a very nice concept because the food is fresh and tasty. Also the ambience of the place is very decent and comfortable. The place has carparking, so no need to worry.

Now talking about the food over here, the food is mainly costal sea food. They have a very wide range of fishes to choose from. This place gives me freshness to the food. So to tell about what I had over here,

1. Uthukulli Butter Lobster
2. Chicken Ghee Roast
3. Madras Squid Fry
4. Curry Leaf Prawns
5. Kari Choru
6. Madras fish curry
7. Egg and plain appams
8. Home style chicken curry
9. moog dal payasam
10. Goli Soda
11. Crab pepper fry

90 percent of the food over here is top notch with amazing cooking skills shown by the chef. This was the first time I was having lobster and it was just too good. One of the tastiest lobster I ever had! The crab pepper fry was really good with a lot of pepper, it was indeed a little bit spicy but the crab was a slightly juicy. The prawns and squid fry was good. The Chicken ghee roast, the meat was tender but the chicken was very spicy, you can ask them to make it less spicy if you want it. The main course, the appams and the curry, just a great bunch of flavours on the dish. They also have nannari juice and goli sodas as well. Don't forget to try their payasams as well.

Overall I had a great experience over here by trying all the sea food I can. Amazing service from the Sea Salt Team. Do try this place out for amazing sea food.

A restaurant for sea food lovers which serves fresh catches from local Chennai coastal areas from Kasimedu to Kovalam. The efforts they put in to get it fresh are great. Kudos to their sourcing team.

Coming to the ambiance, this place is lit with pretty lights and a boat like hanging. The place could accommodate almost 35 to 40 people.

Served us with Sundal and murukku, which made me remember marina beach visits, where I used to buy these for sure. Also the taste resembled the same kind.

Nannari sarbath with chia seeds for the drinks which was chill enough to drink in mid of the food.

Madras squid fry: Perfect squid had in recent time that too in a restaurant with less oil and more crispy texture and even the squid wasn’t burnt.

Prawn pepper fry: Thumb sized prawns marinated well with pepper cooked so perfect since it wasn’t rubbery too. It just melted in my mouth with the pepper spiciness level higher.

Crab pepper masala: Masala made of pepper tossed with freshly made crabs marinated so well inside. This made me remember my childhood days when my grandma used to make crabs like this to cure my sour throat.

Chicken ghee roast: Equally red chili spiced masala tossed with tender chicken pieces and ghee. Gamagamakku nei when it came to my table.

Mackeral fish fry: eraal fish from the days catch marinated with red and green chili masala and perfectly roasted which tasted so fresh as it is. Loved them

Lobster was my most favorite tossed with finely chopped onions and pure uthukuli vennai. Loved it to the core., and i dont have words to express the taste really.

Raw mango and fish curry: reminded me of my school time where my friend who lived in kasimedu used to bring this kind of kolambu or curry with finely chopped ginger and mango slices in it. Tangy in taste is what all about this curry.

Tamarind prawn curry: freshly cooked prawns with tamarind and potato puree made less spicy and a bit tangy enough. Went well with kal dosai and uthukuli vennai idly.

Uthukuli vennai idly, kal dosai and wheat parota: Uthukuli vennai idly tops the list with more of uthukuli vennai topped over the idly. U don’t believe I was eating it with the butter initiall. Love it 3000. Kal doasi and wheat parota was a usual one.

Mutton kari soru: People used to call it a gravy mixed with mutton curry prepared separately them mixed well so that both settle each other. The taste of masala is where the perfection is. And yeah they brought in the taste so good. Liked it too, and recommended.

Lady’s finger fries from veg side were the only vegetarian based dish tried here and yeah it was so crispy with well chopped lady’s finger roasted with proper masala.

For desserts had the kasi halwa which my mom used to make with more ghee and nuts. Same taste. Man this place brings in lot of memories into my mind back.

I also made a second visit to try their mutton curry soru and nei chicken, loved it the same way as usual.

This time we opted for a full fish grill, and we ordered viraal fish grill. They rocked it the same waya s before and the taste was even perfect too. They definitely need a lot of appreciation and more than that too.

Coming to their service, I have been there thrice and vizhunthu vizhunthu ubasaraippu is what they do always. From greeting and opening the door for one to entry, then leaving with so much love in tummy and kadala mittai in hand they bring in so much happiness to customers.

Kudos to the team, and please keep the work same way so that we could enjoy home based comparatively cheap sea foods in restaurants apart from boring my mom always to make fresh catch sea food from kasimedu.

Ambiance: 5/5

Food: 5/5

Taste: 5/5

Service: 5/5

Cost: 4.5/5

One exotic seafood restaurant in Chennai! Beautiful place and ambience I must say! Everything served is FRESH! The crabs and lobsters are kept alive until someone orders them.

My partner and I tried out the butter fish, grilled and tawa fries and it was absolutely delicious! The flavour with and without the masala was appetising.
We also had paratha and chicken ghee roast which is very filling and boy was it so tasty!

Definitely a must try for all the seafood lovers, this place is amazing!

It was my sister’s birthday and I was looking for a place that serves her kind of food and something that my family really loves—home-style cooked seafood. There was this restaurant at the back of mind, that’s been making a lot of news and I have heard so much about the food. Sea Salt was our choice of restaurant for the day.

The restaurant is located in KNK Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai (very easy to locate, use your google maps). We walked into this beautiful space with wooden furnishing, natural light hitting the room, good music and the trees swaying with the wind (and dancing to the music?). There’s something about spaces with natural lighting, they give you the positive vibes. As we kept walking, on the extreme left, there is a counter where you can choose your live seafood and the cooking style (No! The restaurant doesn’t smell of seafood. I was surprised too!). And if it’s your first time with exotic seafood, the team is extremely helpful – and trust me their choice turned out to be the best. We chose a small lobster to be grilled and few jumbo prawns to be deep fried. Next to your seafood display is an appam counter where the akka makes different types of appam.

Friendly smiling waiters showed us to our table. As we sat at our table, they served lemon juice (a complimentary drink), to increase our appetite as if we weren’t already hungry after all the wonderful aroma at the restaurant! You can also choose different types of sodas! You have your plates with banana leaves (the hot food absorbs the flavors and nutrients from the leaf, which is supposed to be super healthy for the body). The menu is very limited, doesn’t run for pages, they don’t boast their skills with too many things but have an excellent choice of items that are classic South Indian favorites and legendary. So let me get straight down to the food. Here’s what we had:

Starters

Madras Squid—calamari/ squid is extremely tricky to be cooked. If you over cook it, it gets rubbery. If you under cook it, it gets chewy! But what came to the table was perfect - Crunchy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside, with a burst of South Indian masalas. You’ll loathe fish and fish chips if you ever taste this!

Grilled Lobster—our baby lobster (though it looked massive on the table) which was grilled with onion, tomato and lot of masalas, was super juicy and fresh.
Prawn Fry—prawns are marinated with goodness of the spicy South Indian masalas and deep fried. You just can’t stop with one - crispy, crunchy, juicy, melty, disappears! Sorry, take another one!

Curry leaf Prawn—this is a brilliant recipe that the restaurant has come up with. Prawns are marinated in a curry leaf powder along with other spices and deep fried. The taste of the curry leaves compliments the juicy and crunchy prawns. Vey very addictive!
I have never eaten anything like this before. Curry leaf usually has strong flavors, and these guys have done a brilliant job of not letting it over power the seafood.

Green Chili Chicken—not your usual chili chicken. This one’s cooked with green chilies and a lot of lemon juice to balance out the heat. Lemony, garlicky, chili flavored chicken just before we started the main course was the best way to move on to the next course.

Main Course

Kari Soru—small chunks of soft and tender mutton cooked in a masala with home ground spices. This masala is mixed with piping hot rice and served in an earthen pot. The taste transports you to the southern most districts of Tamil Nadu. I almost forgot I was eating at a restaurant located right in the middle of the city!

Fish Curry—curry with onion, tomato, spices, and delicate pieces of fish that melt in your mouth. You can literally drink the curry, that’s full of flavors-tangy, spicy, sweet, sour, seafoody! Order this with rice or appam (highly recommend).

Egg Appam—crispy appam, with wobbly egg (nailed it!) and a spongy center, that’s just too good to stop eating with the curry. I wish I had more space to eat lot of these.

Desserts

Kashi Halwa—pumpkin halwa that’s not too sweet and full of (real) ghee and nuts that keeps you grounded until you finish the bowl.

Elaneer/ Tender Coconut Payasam—you are very lucky if this is your payasam of the day. The creamy kheer/ payasam comes with actual rabri, perfect amount of sweetness, pieces of tender coconut and pellets of rice.

The end of our meal!

My family has been cooking seafood and other non-vegetarian items with home ground spices for generations now and we’re all avid seafood eaters. So we know our food! And we walked out of this restaurant with heart and tummy filled with joy! These guys know what they are doing, not just with seafood, but every item on their menu!

I was at Sea Salt recently with some friends and I must say that they dish up some really good curries and grills in South Indian style.
You could choose from their menu or choose the live catch and have it cooked your way!
Their curries had a very homely touch to them but what personally attracted me was the hot appams dished up their resident appam expert #Kanakamma. She was really friendly and loved to have a quick chat!

All the staff were friendly, and were always at our disposal!
Although Sea Salt didn't fare great with regards to the taste, it is a place I'd love to visit again for the homely feeling provided💞

Ok, when insta was full of drooling pictures from this place, I decided my next visit would be to this place. And yes, this place didn’t disappoint.

For a person like me who loves home style food punched with spices & masala, this place is definitely a go to go which serves authentic Tamil Nadu style food specially sea food. They have a counter for live lobsters, live crabs and variety of fishes and also prawns (as the manager said the fishes are fresh catch and arrived in the evening) we were there for dinner. You can select your choice of fish and also choose the way it has to be cooked. Isn’t interesting???

So, coming to our order
Starters - MADRAS MASALA SQUID is a deep fried fresh baby squid that was fried to perfection. Squid in any form has my heart and i loved this dish, just that there was no dip to go with it which was lil disappointing. When asked they did gives us a raw mango chutney which was okaish for my taste.

Main Course- CHICKEN CURRY to go with PAROTTAS which were really good, we asked for second serving and KALDOSA nothing extraordinary. Coming to chicken curry, though it looked watery, the chicken was cooked to perfection and the masala punch was on spot.

KARI CHORU - Star of the day. With The reach aroma of ghee, sprinkled with brown onions and perfectly cooked mutton chunks was a treat to taste buds.

We didn’t try any desserts as we were already full. But we were offered “KADALA MITTAI” as complimentary at the end of the meal.

Over all the bill was around ₹850 including GST which was totally worth it.

If you are craving Home style simple flavours, then this is the place! Fresh seafood, great service and some yummy food. I selected the snow grouper for my madras curry and tried the prawns in both red and green chillies. All three amazing flavours. We also had mutton Sukka and chicken ghee roast. Both very mild flavours. You might want to tell them if you prefer more chilli in your food. We prefer mild spiced so we were happy but I know lot of people would prefer a bit of spice. Desserts unfortunately was over and they only had tender coconut payasam. Again can’t go wrong. It’s just like how mom would make :)

The long lasted search for a resto which serves exclusive and exotic NOT YOUR REGULAR FISHES came to an END last Saturday when we heard about this newly opened Restaurant called Sea salt

This restaurant has a unique concept of choosing the variety of sea foods. Like There are millions of varieties of fishes available in the ocean and this restaurant strives to bring as much as varieties to our plate. Incredible isn't it? .

And the service which they provide is one of the best in industry. Making us feel more like at home and all the staffs carry a smiling face and doesnt hesitate to help at any point of time🙏🙏🙏

So if you are a hardcore SEA FOOD LOVER THEN YOU BETTER DON'T MISS THIS PLACE 😎

We started with Nannari Sharbath which was sweet and tangy as usual.

Followed by Prawns and squid fry - Crispy well marinated Masala fried prawns 😍 Tasty to the core, squid were a bit salty.

The green paste fish fry was my fav amongst all the food we tasted, my word it was so satisfying and tasty with proper amount of green chilli masala cooked well and crisp outside..

We also tried their exotic lobster collection which was weighed and served, this is a bit on costly side, yet for the kind of live lobsters and the way its cooked, I bet you can go for these atleast ones with eyes closed. Uthukulli butter is used to cook this lobster and I am drooling while typing this 🤭

The main course of Appam and Prawn curry is something which you should never miss when you pay a visit here. The Kari choru of Mutton brings the childhood memories of my native and had the consistent taste which is going to make this dish as a super hit.

Overall it was a brilliant experience for me and I am definitely bringing my family to this restaurant next month as I don't want them to miss these kind of food coupled with the highest level of service 💖

This place is simply awesome. Madras squid s a must try. It was fried to perfection. Though being a seafood speciality place spl mention to the ghee roast chicken. Prawn coconut milk curry with the soft n fluffy appams were too very good. Thattu idli was served with dollop of butter. The snapper raw mango curry was yummy. Best was the parrot fish fry. Just wow. Desserts were good. Had elaneer payasam and Kasi halwa. Jus head to this place if u want the freshest food in town. Now I want to give a more than 5 rating to the fabulous service. Jus feels like home. Ambience was clean n neat. This place can be assured of a regular visitor in me !!

Best ever vegetarian meals n a sea food restaurant?? Yes you heard it right.. my recent fav spot for a great vegetarian saapadu. Fresh off the boat is the concept,as I a pure vegetarian but I also wanted to get the feel of being n a madras seafood restaurant so they beautifully came up with this Beach maanga Sundal accompanied the saapadu. You can definitely see me often here. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Special day call's for special food!
Dinner at Sea salt at kNK, Chennai was our choice knowing that the birthday boy loves south indian food!
The concept is just the way I like my food to be:

1) Fish is sourced fresh everyday from small boats. Satish is the person who is behind the sourcing of fresh fish everyday. That means no fish that is stocked in trollers for weeks.
2) Oil used in the kitchen is cold pressed.
3) menu is south indian predominantly coastal cuisine.
4) Food is served in clay plate's and pots.
5) Decor is beautiful and rustic in few places.

We started our dinner with grilled Sheela/ barracuda in red masala. Fresh and perfectly spiced.
Mutton chukka was so yummy and we repeated the order.
Vanjaram fry was perfectly spiced and fried.
Madras fish curry was tasty
Home style chicken curry was perfect side dish for the parotta.
Special mention to this most awesome, simple and humble lobster that was cooked with uthukuli butter and fresh green pepper. I have never eaten something like this before. (A must try).
Chef Gopal explained each dish to us and the staff were extremely courteous.

So there is no biryani here instead they have curry soru, which I thought was different.
They also have karuvad/ dry fish curry. These are dishes I would try when I go for lunch which I am definitely going.

The food is excellent, ambience rustic and tastefully done. Service par excellence.
Sea salt is at KNK, above Sandy's.

A nice place to have some good seafood. We had the prawns briyani which was nice, the sarbath was pretty good too. The groundnut candy at the end was a nice touch to the overall experience of the place. Will definitely have to go back to try out the other dishes...

The restaurant is located in Nungambakkam, Chennai (very easy to locate, use your google maps). My family has been cooking seafood and other non-vegetarian items with home ground spices for generations now and we’re all avid seafood eaters. So we know our food! And we walked out of this restaurant with heart and tummy filled with joy! These guys know what they are doing, not just with seafood, but every item on their menu!

Sea Salt knows the value of sea food. This restaurant has fishermen working with them. All the masalas used here are fresh. Made by the fisher women according to the restaurant's specifications.

Great Food. A No Nonsense Simple but curated menu. Though a fully seafood restaurant they dont have random cuisine choices. Its a fully South Indian reataurant. Almost all items tasted good. Best was Crab, Kari soru, Fish gravy, egg appam, parotta and Nannari Sharbeth. Decent Portion size. Do visit if u wanna have a good south indian seafood dinner.

Wonderful place for fish, crab and lobster varieties. Good place fon veg fish, crab, lobster eaters. Also biryani as kariaoru, chicken / fish food items like manchurian , 65 available. Pros: If we order when we enter restaurant, we can choose alive lobster, crab and recently purchased iced fish on table. They will prepare the fish dishes and serve in 20 to 40 minute after ordered. Cons: 1.for vegetarian people, food options are very less. 2. Need to include more fish varieties to choose. 3. Chicken Mutton eater may be little disappointed due to that particular varieties

One of the best sea food restaurant you will ever find in Chennai! You have a live sea food counter. The fish, crab, and lobster are all fresh, they are alive. When we order them. They are taken out of the tank and then cooked for us. Also the other dishes in the menu were really good. Loved each and every dish. The ambience of the place is also very good and comfortable. The service over here is amazing. Do check this place out guys, you will love it.

Good food, great ambiance and great location. We went for a family outing. They had valet parking which made things worry free on the parking front. They have a small yet rich menu. The dishes are amazing and worth a try. The raw mango fish curry and the fried fish are must haves.
