'Tosai' is a well known kiosk known for it's various kinds of dosas in various parts of Chennai. I still remember my maiden visit to their branch at Karapakkam and I'm a huge fan of their Pizza and Pav Bhaji Dosa. But to my surprise they also have a full fledged restaurant in OMR, which serves lunch and dinner. Some of us were here try some delicacies from the lunch menu.
AMBIENCE :
A garden and ship themed, which replicates St Petersburg. The garden area holds a seating capacity of 40 people on the go. It's a great choice of you dine in for dinner, more of a relaxed space. They also have an elevated seating that can hold upto 30 people on the go, which is breezier than the former one.
CUISINE :
Apart from various varieties of dosa, they also serve a good choice of fusion vegetarian Indian, Italian, Chinese, Mughlai and Continental cuisines for lunch as well as dinner.
FOOD :
Coming to the food, started with MURUNGAILAI CHARU which is basically a drumstick soup made using the extracts. The flavour was fresh, yet tasted a bit bland. If you're looking for something different from that of the usual soups, this can be a change. Next was VEGETABLE BULLETS, crispy bread crumbs stuffed with mashed potatoes and peas. This tasted good with the mayonaise dip. Next we tried two tikkas, first was the PINEAPPLE TIKKA, had a decent taste, definitely on the sweeter side from the one that was served second, PANEER TIKKA, uber soft chunks of Paneer grilled and marinated to perfection. We wanted to try something Mexican and Chinese, hence ordered for NACHOS WITH SAUCE, store bought Nachos that was topped with salsa and cheese, tasted okayish as the chips were not crispy enough, by the time we had it was all soggy in texture and CHINESE PLATTER, was a huge platter that consisted of Veg Spring roll, Chilli Panner, Mushroom and Baby Corn Manchurian. It can easily be shared by 4 people, because of the generous portion. My pick were the chilli paneer and the baby corn Manchurian. Apart from these, there were PANEER SHEEKH KEBAB, which was tad bit bland and soft needs a slight improvement, ALOO CORN TIKKI - mashed potatoes and corn, tasted good with the dip, very subtle and light and AFGHANI GOBI TIKKA, this was something of a kind. Gobi was covered with malai, yet tasted really good. Definitely the start dish of the starters.
For mains, we tried PESTO PENNE PASTA, which was slightly of the saltier side but taste wise really good. Seasonings were well done. One of my instant favourite. PANEER TIKKA BIRIYANI, though there is an argument about the veg versions not qualified to be called a Biriyani, this one definitely is worth to be called one. The Biriyani was layered, has amazing masalas mixed to it with the uber soft and delicious Paneer. I definitely loved it. Must try and definitely a great choice for the vegetarians. Gravies included KAJU MASALA, which stuck true to the name, rich and yummy good one to to go with the CHILLI CHEESE NAAN, topped with chill and cheese that was yummy and the other one being PANEER BUTTER MASALA, that was creamy rich, well done and yet again a great choice for the naan.
For Indian desserts, we were served ELANEER PAYASAM, which was not the best I've had but tasted decent, CARROT HALWA, it was beautiful sight because of the colour, taste wise it was sweet and yummy, GULAB JAMUN, was good. Apart from this, the continental desserts included TIRAMISU, which was basically whipped cream topped with strawberries with a slight hint of coffee, needs a lot of improvement and COFFEE PANNA COTA, which was also good and tasted decent.
Overall, Tosai is definitely a good choice for fusion vegetarian food in the IT corridor as they have a menu that serves variety and. Cost is perfect for the quantity, service can be a bit more faster. There were certain other let downs, and the feedback that was given was taken on a positive note by the management and assured it to be taken care.
