I have been to 100s of restaurants/eateries/food carts etc., to eat biryani. But this one is the best place to have mutton/chicken biryani. They serve Good portion of rice and meat for very reasonable price. It’s aromatic and flavorful. Go there at 1 pm, you’ll get fresh, super hot biryani. They serve only limited portions, so if you are late you may not get it. Don’t expect even an average ambience. They don’t cook there. Prefer taking out. Two wheelers can be parked.

Lately, there has been no shortage of Biryani supply in the city since we could find a black pot serving it in almost all the streets of Chennai. This is one small place located on the main road which serves tasty Mutton and Chicken Biryanis. Mind you, parking is a big hassle around this place.

Both the Mutton and Chicken were tender, but they weren’t spicy. Though there isn’t anything bada boom about it, the flavours were well blended without any frills around. The price of each plate was damn cheap (1/4 and ½ plates available). And, the only concern would be the ambience; I’m sure that not everyone would be a fan of it (prefer takeaway in that case). WORTH A SHOT!

At the outset this may be one of those crude biryani outlet with literally no ambience, but take my words for a biryani lover.. this place is a no-nonsense cut the crap biryani heaven that puts to shame many top class restos serving so called biryani.
Jus devour their mutton biryani, you will forget the world.
They have been selling biryani in this place for nearly 12 years now. They serve noon and eve freshly cooked.
Shahi Moghul was recommended by one of my Muslim friend and turned out to be a place worth the find.
Must go to place in Chennai for simply ecstatic biryani experience.

Food and Flavour: 3.5/5
Ambience: 3/5
Service: 4/5
Seating: 2.5/5
Value for Money: 3.5/5

* No Parking available

What may look like a regular Biriyani stall with their black ‘andaas’ almost on the pavement, may well be the best you’ve had in the neighbourhood. Easily missed and overshadowed by another iconic restaurant (Hotel Safari) next door. More likely than not, Mutton Biriyani gets sold out by the time it’s 1:30 PM. Since it’s located on a busy main road, parking outside isn’t an option.

The cramped staircase next to the entrance is your way to the seating area with about 6 tables. It’s packed during weekends and the takeaways outdo the walk-in sales on most days. It was two of us for lunch on a weekday at 1.

Order:-

Mutton Biriyani 1/2 (₹170 *3) - The biriyani was mildly flavoured and dry with almost no irritants (lodged masala, etc.). Mutton pieces were cooked well and tender.

They didn’t have chicken 65 which is usually on the menu. Raitha was awful; curd had turned. The brinjal curry contained huge brinjals, was tangy and delectable.

Would prefer dine-in over takeaways and both chicken and mutton Biriyani are good. They often go wrong with the raitha which is a letdown. The tables were a tad bit dirty. Service was okay. No flies noted and ambience not a big bother once you start guzzling on the biriyani.
Total:- ₹510/-

After reading the reviews took a cab and reached this place by 12.15 PM today thinking Sunday it maybe a mad rush and also biryani might get over , however luck played it and the biryani was late and arrived close to 1 PM . I was second in the queue and in no time there was a serpent queue outside on the platform . The shop is a small place , I mean really small . So the line goes until inside the shop you pay for ur order come to the side with the token / slip and get the parcel . I took the mutton , chicken and kushka .

Price is very reasonable and if you can opt for egg or no egg , I believe the variation is 5Rs . So you rather opt for the egg given that the egg raw in a shop is about the same price while ur getting a boiled one here . Mutton is 170 , chicken 110 and Kushka is 60 if my memory is right .

Coming to the Biryani , it was good . Nice rice used and it’s long . The meat in the mutton and chicken were also good . Overall I feel it is a bit over hyped since I did not find the WOW factor in it . It was good , less spice and less masala which is the way Biryani should be . The brinjal and curd accomplishment were good , however less in quantity. I don’t think you stand a chance to get extra of those due to the crowd . Collect ur packet and vanish 😊. It is a total chaos inside the way each one wanting to get their hands on the biryani .

The location it’s the 3rd shop on the right going straight under the flyover from Devi theater on ur left . Next to it is also Charminar and another hotel named Safari which actually I used for location purposes . There is no car parking and bike parking is a bit cramped but you will find a spot . Forget about eating there and take a parcel and relish it at home .

Overall worth a try and I will also give it another try thinking that I could have got more off the top layer of rice being the second person to get the biryani which could be hampering my taste buds a bit .

When it comes to biryani there are only two places which strikes my mind. Charminar and moghul biryani. Both stands equal for there quality and taste. Charminar biryani is usual for us as it is located near my house. But this biryani is something to die for. You get that Muslims wedding biryani taste here. 😍😍😍

One of the best "bhai" briyanis in Chennai. Noon's are always packed & the briyani gets over by 1:30. Seating is a problem, "takeaway" is preferable. Value for money.

You Gotta eat here!

Those who've been to Hotel Safari or have went past that place couldn't have ever missed this always crowded Biryani Shop. One can notice the over flowing crowd waiting to do takeaway from here. They also have a dine-in space. People looking for ambience and proper hand wash area, kindly excuse.

The Mutton Biryani (₹150 / Without Egg) here is what many would call as Tamil Muslim Style. It was long grained, aromatic, mildly spicy, almost Nil-irritants with no over powering spices. Those who prefer their Biryani spicy might not prefer this. The Brinjal Gravy was top-notch with a slightly tangy taste. Chicken 65 (₹100) was slightly high on colour but tasted good.

Paid ₹400 totally.

I've been fortunate enough to say I have been able to eat at this place over 50 times* this past year, and I am writing this review to tell you, what you are missing out, and leave you some tips if you're a beginner at this whole thing.

As with all my reviews I will be reviewing solely based on the biriyani using 4 criteria, and no other factors such as price, ambience or service will be considered.

Mutton Biriyani
1. Flavor profie of the Rice - 5/5, There is absolutely no subtlety in flavor. There is just an upfront impact of spice, this slowly mellows down toward the end of the plate into a beautiful finish and leaves a lingering aroma and aftertaste.
2. Texture of rice & Consistency - 5/5, No doubts here, just amazing stuff. Con
3. Side dish - 3/5, raita + an eggplant/brinjal gravy. Skip the raita, ask for more gravy. But there is some consistency issues with that as well.
4. Meat - 5/5, fall of the bone, juicy, tender. Pairs very well with the rice. Complex flavor profile.
5. Overall - 4.5/5, Definitely one of the best biriyani's you can experience, only let down by it's side dishes.

Note: Availability - You may find this is a hard biriyani to get, with the queues, improper shop timings and (some) mismanagement.

Tips:
1. Get there at 12:30pm. Do not think about visiting on Sundays. Huge huge queues.
2. Do not take a date, or hope to engage a friend in conversation. Get your food, get out.
3. If you are a clean freak - whatever you do, do not go inside the place. Just pay from outside and get a takeaway.
4. As in the previous point, takeaways are best. I would generally advice against getting an egg as well. You could request for an extra gravy, but you might not get it.
5. Get one more than you think you need, trust me you will need it.
6. What are you still reading this for? Go and live it yourself.

As for prices:
1. Mutton Biriyani Half- 150
2. Chicken Biriyani Half - 100.
3. Kuska Half - 60 and Quarter - 30
For an egg add 5rs to each plate of biriyani

* - Not an exaggeration.

Edit: Added a few photos of the mutton biriyani. It does look much better than my poor photography skills can portray.

Had muton biryani for takeaway. The flavour, especially smokiness from the firewood came through really well. Long grained and lightly spiced which was light on the stomach. I am rating only 3.5 for the quantity, as it was less and also too much tomato tanginess coming through the otherwise wonderful flavor

I along with my colleague had a work in PF office, Royapettah.  When we finished there, the time was about 1:30.  We went here for lunch.  For dine in, we have to go upstairs.  The place was very crowded.  One has to be in queue to get seat.

We got the seat after about 5 minutes and we ordered for 2 mutton biriyani.  The biriyan is very good.  The mutton pieces are so tender and spices are in excellent proportion.  We ordered an another one and shared.  But I didn't like the taste of raitha.

So, if you are a biriyani lover, this place is a must visit.

One more shop added to my list of '"actually good" Biriyani places in Chennai'.

I always rate these Bitiyani shops only based on taste, as I don't want these places to lose out just because of the ambiance, when compared to "bad-Biriyani-serving-posh-restaurants". So, the same continues here.

A small shop right at the junction of Royappetah High Road and Peters Road. Need to climb a narrow flight of stairs to the first floor. The places might be heavily crowded during lunch and might have to wait for a table, a while.

Ordered one Kushka (Plain Biriyani) and Chicken 65. The Kushka was amazing. Delicious and mouth-watering! Though I felt that it could have been a bit more spicy, the Chicken 65 made up for it. It was super-spicy and went very well with the Kushka. And I need to mention this: the brinjal gravy here is one of the best I have had in Chennai.

Overall, though no Biriyani house can come anywhere close to Ya Moideen, but this place is also one of the best Biriyani spots in Chennai!

Whenever there's a craving to have a heart-filling Biryani, a man will find it. Royapettah has always had the best web of Biryani in the city.

The small biryani shop is in the Royapettah Main road. Park vehicles at your own risk as it's a busy road.

Had a Mutton & Chicken biryani with Chicken 65. Both biryani had more or less same taste, owing to their spice formula. But, the flesh used actually defines its output. Comparing to other places, it's not bad yet not too good. The poultry used needs to be more tender and not dry.

Prices are dead cheap. Service is not applicable here.

Ratings based only on Taste...

Shahi moghul house is located right next to the hotel safari located in royapettah high road...This is my most prefered place for parcels of biryani in this locality...definitely after charminar though...This is very small place with seating area on the first floor which i have never vsited...Parking is almost zero...quick buy and leave type...busy signal this is..

The biryani here is really flavorfull and perfectly spiced..Tastes heavenly...Chicken biryani priced at 90rs and mutton at 130rs...can be considered as one of those must try places in chennai...this is to royapettah what ya mohideen is to pallavaram...They dont serve egg with the biryani you need to pay seperately for that last i checked it was 5rs for the egg...

As said on of the must try biryanis in chennai...For all those biryani enthusiasts this should be the next one on your wishlist

If u r looking for a biryani spot in a boys only hang out then this is the place. Not meant for girls and women as the ambience there doesn't allow it. Chicken biryani tasted good with tender chicken pieces and the mutton biryani was also yummy but the pieces were a little oversized for a biryani. We went there a for a normal weekday lunch still we waited for about 20 mins for a seat. They also provide omelette which is unusual for a biryani shop. On the whole it was a better experience but for the ambience.

While biryani taste is subjective, this place serves one of the best biryanis I've ever tasted. The quantity served is relatively lesser compared to other similar biryani joints. However I had no second thoughts on ordering for 2nd and 3rd helping :). Women definitely won't feel like stepping in and hence recommend take away or home delivery for them. A must try!

Got referred by my colleague for some brilliant biryani.
Bottomline, it is a second best biryani...only next to hajeeras.
Picked up a chicken and mutton biryani. Both tasted very good. It had absolutely no extra fat add...so that made meal very light for a biryani. Mutton pieces were tender and well cooked. This biryani had the longest basmatic grains I have ever seen. Every grain is complete no broken rice added. The quality is top class. Biryani lovers....this is a must try . for obvious reasons ambience is just functional...parking is a problem. But get a take away and enjoy it happily at home. Packaging is a problem ...plastic sheet and paper. If that problem is fixed...it is 4.5else 4.0

One of the most sought out biriyani in Chennai. They make only limited quantities. They have Both Chicken 🐓 and Mutton🐐 Biriyani. If you plan for Lunch go around 13.15 because around 14.00 Biriyani will be Sold out. For Dinner Be there by 7-7.30 before it's sold out. Try their Bread Halwa it's unique and very tasty 😋. There is no Swiggy or Zomato Available.

Tucked away in a pretty old building housing what could probably be one of the best biriyani places in town, I must say. The mutton biriyani was just perfect ; the pieces were really soft, rice had just enough amount of oil and had this nice flavour and mildly spicy. A treat to your tongue and your soul to be more descriptive. The Chicken 65 was also perfectly done where most of the other places have been ruining the texture and taste. The masala seems to be made in house with just the right amount of char and that usual tangy taste. They've earned a customer for life and I'd recommend everyone to try them out.

One of the best Biriyani in the city is served here. I have been eating here since my college days from 2004..... Now we are in 2018, even after joining other companies in my career, I always wanted to visit Mughal House for their delicious Biriyani. That's why I already visit them once every month. Their taste hasn't changed......... This place gets crowded very soon during lunch hours in weekdays, since the Biriyani vessel arrives around 12.30 to 12.40. So, 12.45 is the best time to arrive here for lunch. Sometimes if there is delay, it can extend. Earlier ground floor was for dining, now only first floor is for dining here, they have 5 tables with 4persons each seating capacity. They also serve chicken 65 & omlete here, their 65 is heavenly, sometimes it's not available though. The onion raita & brinjal chutney served here is the best of quality we can find in any eateries. After our Biriyani arrives in plate, we can opt for egg by asking them. Mostly they delay in giving Mutton Biriyani due to the vessel situated very interiorly and not much ease to reach there for the servers. So, chicken we can get easily. Both the Biriyanis are awesome. Don't go here after 1.15pm, cause either the Biriyani would be already over or huge crowd will be there waiting for both for parcels & dining.

I had recently picked up mutton biryani & bread halwa as take away (this shop is take-away only) from Shahi Mughal Biryani shop. The biryani & sides (salna & raita) were exceptionally tasty, but the bread halwa ended up being too sweet & heavy on the tummy. Price was nominal. I will definitely visit them again, but only for their biryani.
