After pandemic, My first visit is here only. We had Full Kari virunthu, All the starters are so good and seeraga samba biriyani was well cooked. Rice and 4 gravies is given, Never expected this good. Got 20 percentage off by Zomato pro.
We visited this place for late lunch as a group of 5. The table booking process was hassle free through Zomato. The place is easy to locate and has ample parking space as well.
Meals was over by the time we went. So we had biryani and parotta. We found the food to be flavorful and nice. However, the serving size was less. It would have been better if the quantity served is improved as well.
Overall a great dining experience. Definitely a place I'd visit again.
We tried :
* Chicken biryani
* Parotta
* Kumbakkarai chicken gravy
* Vazha ilai chicken
All the dishes were good and also spicy.. no issues with the taste.. If you really want a spicy south indian seeraga samba Biryani ... Then this place is a must try ...
Kumbakkarai chicken gravy and vazha ilai chicken š„
Taste : 4/5
Ambience : 4/5
Happened to visit Kumbakkarai Restaurant today evening with 4 of us . First time stepped into this Restaurant, the ambience was good and quiet spacoius.
Coming to food, we ordered Vazhai Ilai Biriyani, Vazhai Ilai Fish and Prawn, wow it was really amazing. They made it with seeraga samba rice and wrapped with Vazhai Ilai and heated again in barbecue. Once unwrapped, the flavor of banana leaf and their hot biriyani made us floating on the heaven. And fish and prawn too was top notch. We strongly recommend this restaurant. Feel to visit again very soon. Thanks folks...
Ambience:
This place will have its own fans for its ambience. Each and every table has its privacy. Interior lighting is a bit dark.
Food:
I tried vazhayilai chicken for the first time here. It was one of the best chicken I have ever tasted. Mutton chukka, Biryani and vanjaram fry tasted too good but was not having the quantity for the amount you pay is the only negative thing I would say.
Service:
The service was a bit slow yet it was served with kindness and love. That makes it the best!
This is a pre booked restaurant and also has a good parking facility.
Must try malai kulfi ..
Tried kothu idli for the first time... It was too spicy but was good...
Ambience was fine...
Ordered gobi 65 and omlet, price was very reasonable, this two items cost 70 rupees, which is really worth to try, packaging was good, swiggy delivered the food within 15 minutes.

Kumbakkarai - What I shall say about this beautiful place
A classic restaurant which is located centrally amidst central location serving some great delicacies .
Ambiance -4/5
Impressive decor the entire place is setup as a old bungalow with mud lamps and rustic decor that reflects nativity.
Seating options are quite comfortable too.
Loved the entrance of this place - its like our home with those simple lamps lit and welcoming decor.
Service - 5/5
Would put forth this parameter as the staff here deserve a huge round of applauseĀ
They are accommodating and do their best.
They provide valuable suggestions too and are dutiful, they make sure they go that extra mile to make sure a customer returns home contended. right from security who welcomes with warm smile to stewards every one here are amazing.
You folks deserve a huge round of applause.
Food -4/5
Ā I tried a chicken starter along with chettinad Chicken biryani
The chicken starter is rustic humble spices blended and cooked well along with tampering of curry leaves give it a special touch
And the chettiand chicken biryani is simply amazing loved the taste, accompanied by dalcha, sharwa and curd raitha.
Dalcha was just perfect .Ā
In Biryani the pieces were slightly under cooked but taste per say it is great with the jeera samba rice enhancing the taste
VFM- 4.5/5
The prices are not too heavy on pocket
Food tastes good and is served in huge portions.
Will i come back Hell yes - loved this placeĀ
And if im in chennai will be for sure visiting Kumbakkarai as it has a special place in my heart
A memorable meal and good dinner that I would remember for long.
Thanks folks
Nice place for spend with family . #friendly staffs, #worth fooddd, #city centre #peace place #grand treat, #economy price, #tastieee foood...
Cool restaurant with neat ambiance, comfortable seating more than that amazing food experience. Good adda for group lunch
Great service with the traditional food and ambience is the best thing about this place. One of the best South Indian cuisine restaurants!
Good service i m happy with food quality and all
Had a different experience in food.. Typical South Indian food.. They started with panagam.. No other South Indian restaurant will serve panagam..mutton chukka and prawn fry was good.. Must try 'raja bhoga virunthu'...friendly staff.. Very good ambience..quality service. . The real taste of the South Indian tradition
Ordered mutton meals, omellete, egg briyani the quality was top notch and excellent. Would definetly recommend to try.
This was the pretty full place that I ever seen
We order the mutton meal the order was late but it's more delicious
I like the place... ambience is so good....we order mutton meal...it was good delicious with good quantity and quality....it's good place to visit with your friends and family
We were searching for a place where we can get some authentic taste of Chennai.. thankfully we landed up here.. the food was super tasty and we the spice level was out of This world.. Here we had the best meal during the entire trip ....the service was also quick and prompt.. the staaf was very polite ... definitely a place to go if u like spicky chicken...
There is no love sincerer than love of food...ask this foodie that is ME... So wonder why is this rated only 3.9. Such an authentic place with a staff who recommended exactly what we were looking for at the end of a long day...each and every dish was amazingly perfect for us.
The start was with some sweet sevai (don't know what it's called) followed by veg, chettinad mushroom was perfect dish, taking u to the spicy routes of Tamil Nadu with a multiple layered Malabar parottla... Even chicken dish was amazing with a perfect blend of taste, texture and low on oil.
At the self serviced concept in paan at the end of ur meal...Make you own paan with all the ingredients on ur plate...I thot that was exciting... All boxes were ticked well...will visit again ...!!
The place was simply good ambience was excellent with helpful staff. Great food and overall experience. Was here for lunch along with friends enjoyed, an unlimited banana leaf lunch and briyani , parotto, egg kalaki both veg & non-veg food was awesome.
Visited this restaurant for lunch with my colleagues. We were warmly welcomed by the staff. As a sweet gesture, they gave us authentic welcome drink made of jaggery and a sweet payasam.
This restaurant is inspired by the theni style and the spices used here are handmade and bought from a forest named kumbakkarai which has waterfalls.
The food here was very tasty with proper blend of spices. The staff were very polite, humble and always had a smile on their face. Their special dishes are worth mentioning. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.
The entire experience was good with the restaurant. We had been given a welcome drink"panagam" which is a good start. Had ordered naatukozhi soup ,chicken biryani and mutton meals. The soup had perfectly cooked chicken and the spice was up to the mark.Followed by which we had mutton meals which involved unlimited rice ,semi gravy mutton and mutton gravy. The quantity of mutton gravy was suffice but the semi gravy was tastier yet served in a very small quantity.Chicken biryani was good.staffs were very polite .

It was for lunch we decided to check out this place. The entrance had a replica of the kumbakkarai falls which was thoughtful. And going in, the staff greeted us and seated us promptly and took the order. The welcome drink was refreshing and the food arrived soon. Chicken and mutton briyani are of the typical madurai style prepared with seeragasamba rice. The special kumbakarrai kozhi kulambu and kumbakarrai mutton kulambu with parotta was yummy. The highlight of the meal however was the kumbakarrai varutha kozhi for starters. Its a must try there.

Went on a weekday for lunch with my friend. We tried mutton milagu soup, mutton biryani, white rice, vanjiram fish curry, prawn varuval and vettiver sharbat. Everything was very good especially the complimentary panagam and the sharbat. Thanks to everybody for their excellent service. Will definitely be going again.
First visit to the restaurant, extremely pleasant experience. The staff were courteous and the hospitality was great. Coming on to the food, ordered for the Non Veg rajabhogam which was a complete platter, very sumptuous and authentic, albeit on the spicier side. Would love to visit again. Vinoth and Naresh were great hosts, special thanks to them. Keep rocking, wish you all the best!
A well decorated restaurant with pleasant ambience in duplex fashion. Itās on a busy road with limited parking.
Service and hospitality are good. Biriyani kuska and chicken vattral were a good combination.
Biriyani rice was seeraga samba. Chicken vattral was a spicy and perfect accompaniment for the rice. Chicken could have been more softer.
Price, bit on the higher side. Yet, appropriate for the ambience and family friendly environment.
A cosy looking place with helpful staff. Great food and overall experience. Was here for lunch along with a colleague who wanted to enjoy an unlimited banana leaf lunch. Both veg & non-veg food was awesome.
Ticked off one more from my bookmarks. I was in Chennai for a flying visit and I was keen to try one of the restaurants from my bookmark list. Fortunately, I was around Nungambakkam area, hence decided to give this a try.
Me and my mom were received warmly by Karthik, the owner of this place which I came to know later. I told him that we prefer sitting downstairs since there was no lift and my mom didnāt want to take the stairs.
I told Karthik that we were damn hungry and asked him to get some starter as quickly as possible. I let him decide the choice of the starter. Within a few minutes, he served us piping hot varutha kozhi which was oozing with flavours! Since we had decided on the main course in the interim, we ordered a chicken meal for my mom, a chicken biriyani, vaazhai ilai chicken and pachamilagai chicken.
All the dishes were piping hot and freshly cooked. Every single item served was delicious. Special mention to the vazhai ilai chicken which was 80% steamed amd 20% deep fried. It is definitely a good alternative to those KFC type chicken which were completely deep fried.
More than the food, what we loved was their delightful service. They took care of us like their guests who came home after a long time and they were making recommendations then and there. My mom also absolutely loved the whole experience. She is generally a poor eater, but I could see that she was eating more than usual.
The non-veg meals was outstanding too! Every side-dish offered was tasty and the meal had a chicken curry and 3 pieces of dry chicken curry with was very good.
They gave us wheat halwa as a complimentary dessert, made out of jaggery which was fantastic! The waiter kindly offered me to eat some white rice with buttermilk, but there was absolutely no room in my stomach. To sign off, they gave betel leaves and a few pieces of kadalai mittai.
Places like these deserve more business as they offer authentic food with a whole lot of signature dishes. If they can keep up with the service and quality, theyāll definitely reach heights.
Visited the restaurant on 24 Feb 19 with my family for lunch. The entrance was typical down south clean and attractive....the restaurant was like a small cottage neat clean and well lit. The reception by the staff was excellent and you were comfortable very soon.
The starters were excellent we tried mutton milagu soup ( must try) and nandu (crab) soup which was a bit on the spicy side. The prawn 65 was so tasty and the erra varruval and vaarai yelai chicken was good. The mutton chukka was good and the biryani was also different but nice.
The chicken and fish curry meals was ok because one needs to acquire a taste for that style of cooking. The staff were very courteous and willing to guide you in what to order.
Being a Sunday it was packed .
The MD Mr Karthik was pleasant and helpful with the guest. Overall a pleasant experience and worth a visit maybe dinner next time.
One of the best restaurants in chennai, which serves the Authentic South Indian Delicacies under one Roof.
Went on a busy Day. The Restaurant was having a little small parking, yet, there are valet drivers, who always ready to take care of our vehicle.
Had a Vazhai Ilai Chicken, which was really not as expected, but yet, good. Then comes the Vanjaram fry which was very good. Later we ordered a Chicken meal, Fish Meal and a Rajbhog Virundhu.
To begin with, they given a Dry Fish Thokku, which was the first ever time, i was tasting in my life. It was really great.
Later, comes the Authentic Chicken, Mutton and Fish Gravies. Everything satisfied the expectations. It was really an unlimited meal which made our day very great.
Last comes the Coconut pudding and the Kerala Kuluki Sarbath. Wow...
Looking forward for an occasion to visit the restaurant again.
Good food and value for money. Above all very friendly staff. Although restaurant was so crowded, they managed so well and occupied everybody with a smile. Swift service and Mr Ashwin, ensured customer service with best quality food and suggestion. Keep up the good work. Will definitely visit here next time with my entire family. Kudos to the manager Mr Ashwin and all his staff.
The place where you can completely statisfied with the SAT ( Service Ambience Taste )
First I wondered with their service, then I loved the Ambience, At last the food and presention Was too good.., really had the gud time.,.
Don't miss this kind of restaurant, I visited many places, here oly I fully satisfied.,.
Went here for lunch and what a feast! Typical South Indian cuisine. Vegetarian and non vegetarian. Two of our group opted for āmealsā veg and non veg. The rest of us ordered a la carte.
Right from the welcome drink ( something made of tamarind?), the starter the mutton pepper chukka to the crab curry and Mutton curry everything was delicious.
The service was very courteous .
To top it all the final bill was so reasonable !
Absolute value for money.
Definitely worth visiting.
A newly opened place!
Decent ambience, before ordering were served with a welcome drink which was really refreshing..
Had a variety of options on the menu, ended up ordering 1 veg thali, 1 mutton thali , 1 mutton starter, 1 crab curry.
All of the above was really good and tasty , mutton was cooked to perfection, the crab meat was also very good.
The food was served on banana leaves , so was a different experience for us in a good way!
Expected the bill to be a lot more than it actually was!!
Overall a really pleasant experience.
Would recommend it to any one who is in the vicinity .
While leaving the owner mentioned that their mutton biryani is worth trying, so that's something for the next time we are in chennai!
This Kerala food available very super tasty food appam and Kadalai curvy and puttu nice my fav Kerala food shop , car parking available and clean ambience love it š„°
A Wow traditional restaurant š..... I went here particularly to taste that spl kedai virundhu....And l have no words to describe the dishes served.....Almost all were delectable .
First the pannagam(a traditional drink) was given
Next a tasty and yummy mutton soup
And then the virndhu was served :)
Prawn gravy , omelette, era thokku meen kuzhambhu, mutton roast and the fish fry were awesome.
Mutton and chicken curry Wr OK.... The mutton pieces was Little harder to eat.
And after the meals we Wr given bedas and barfi .
Their service wr excellent .
Food is delicious. However, apart from the meals, I thought the price for the quantity served was too high. Service was commendable. Eral thokku is a must try.
We went here for dinner with we being the only customers, initially I was like did I make the wrong choice. Never judge a book by it's cover and never judge a restaurant with crowd in it...Everything tasted awesome with good service minded people. People out there are friendly and polite. Definitely worth for the money what we paid. Another best thing about this place is the ambience and the final traditional touch by giving kadalai mittai, vethalai paaku...will sure come back...
Kumbakkarai .. brings u the flavours of south amazingly ..the ambience is jus too good u will be assured of a grt dining experience nd polite service ..coming to the food valai ilai chicken was top notch nd kari dosa was packed with flavours the main point was that food had very less oil and a perfect blend of spices the sweets and beetal leafs was a perfect way to end the meal .. it is a must try place .. as the restaurant promotes ..TASTE THE TRADITION
I think there was Kumarakom in the same place where this Restaurant has come up on Numgambakkam High Road (opposite side of Palmgrove Hotel/Spring Hotel). This place has kickstarted well with neatly done up interiors and friendly staff with fair menu knowledge. The menu is focused on South Indian Food and they seem to fair well in what they offer. I was there during dinner but I would certainly like to visit once during lunch time to try their Meals.
First impression is the best impression. And my first impression about this place was through the Mutton Milagu Soup (ā¹125). Two soups were shared between the three of us which had the right pepper-y flavours. There were fat bits floating in the Soup. Overall, this was top-notch. I prefer a well done š Kari Dosa, with the top layer being on the Tawa for a longer time forming the slightly karak murak crust. The Kari Dosa (ā¹115) here was just not my type. But, the crunchy (ā¹35) Veechu Parotta was my type totally. The accompanying complimentary Mutton & Chicken Gravies along with the Chutneys were all good.
With the name Chicken Vatral (ā¹225), I was expecting a crunchy Chicken dish, whereas this was a Semi-Dry dish. Tastewise, I liked it. But it was the Pachai Milagai Chicken (ā¹225) that I fell in love with. The spiciness coming from the use of ground Green Chilli paste made me all teary-eyed. But what's love without a little drama? So, this was a winner for me. Egg Kothu Parota (ā¹115) was prepared well. Vanjiram Meen Varuval (ā¹225) tasted fresh and the crunchy layer (Maybe Rava/Semolina Dusted) helped it all the more in lifting the taste.
Small grained Mutton Biryani (ā¹265) was decent but I maybe not judging it right as I was busy with other dishes. The few mouthful I had, was full of Garlic Skins indicating the use of pounded Masala but I don't enjoy a Biryani that way (with irritants invading the mouth). I'm giving this dish benefit of the doubt and will conclude only after visiting once again. Appreciate the Restaurant's effort to give proper Meat-y Dalcha along with the Biryani.
Decided to try their desserts that are made out of Palm Jaggery. I was looking forward to Coconut Barfi (ā¹35) but the Mysore Pak (ā¹30) stole the show with it's silky melt-in-your-mouth texture. Vetrilai Paaku is served after the meal and also complimentary Kadalai Mittai is given.
Total bill was ā¹1838 along with 2 Lemon Juices and 2 Omelettes.
Nice place in nungambakkam with beautiful decor. Had a great time here with family. Good food and good people around taking care of service. Would like to visit again.

A kosher restaurant that can be finally called as ā Real Restaurant of
Tamil Nadu ā
As soon as we enter the restaurant, with a smiling face the manager Naresh welcomed us inside with a traditional drink made of karupatti , ginger and some spices which had a āunique tasteā, I quoted the word unique taste is for a reason because most of the menu that I tasted there is unique;this was a place a famous Keralite restaurant called ākudumbamā was located for years which was a lovely restaurant and which is now replaced by a awesome authentic tamilnadu Resturant..
The most succulent dishes that I ordered is listed in a chronological order for anyone to try..
I) Eral thokku, Varutha kozhi ; karuvattu thokku( you can never find it elsewhere like this without any marine smell-traditional awesomeness ); wheat parrotta ( not in the menu but you can ask for them to make it for you and they were very happy to serve it us and it is as soft as any maida parrota which I felt surprised) ; Nandu soup was so spicy but was so good to drink in this weather, itās like we drank one sip of karupatti drink and one sip of the soup to compensate the spicy ;
II) Even though I didnāt try the mutton biryani and the fish I heard it is as as succulent as the menuās I tasted..
If you are like me who is city grown and really crave for a real authentic Tamil Nadu food from deep villages, search nowhere...this place is the best one , donāt be skeptical because it is not much crowded as I wonder why on the earth Zomato rated them 3.6 rather giving them Atleast 4.8 ;
Ask for karthik and Naresh if you like to understand the tradition of preparation of their lovely recipes and their secret of cleanliness they would love to explain you with a warm reception ; we loved interacting with both of them ... surely I would recommend a visit for expatriates and foreign nationals to visit this restaurant if you like to taste mouthwatering dishes of Tamil Nadu ..finally I should say I was really happy to see a dedicated tamilian non-veg restaurant!! Keep serving great food..
Ordered fish curry meals.
It has fish fry and fish gravy. It was awesome
There was special karuvadu gravy and a welcome drink. Both tasted great. The service and waiters were also good.
We went as a group of 6 people. The way we were greeted and received was very good. Staff were very polite and profession . This restaurant servers one of the best Briyani. Vazhai ellai chicken was ultimate . My fiends ordered fish fry , mutton chukka , prawn thokku. Every one loved the food and quick service
This restaurant will surely rank as the best briyani place in Chennai
Loved the food. Authentic Tamil Nadu food. The Mutton Milagai Soup, Kumbakarai spl. Meals and prawn masala has my heart. Good place to come in groups. šš¼
The restaurant is easily is identifiable with its traditional architecture that's sets it apart from the surrounding buildings. We were warmly greeted and presented by a welcome drink. There was no time wasted in deciding what to order. We tried the mutton biryani, the Kumbakkari virndhu and the special meals. The biryani was mouth watering delicious, hot and flavorful.
The special meals had 2 kinda of mutton, a chicken, a prawn, a fish and an omelette.
The sweet done from karupatti in the form of Mysore Pak was the best thing ever! I'd recommend getting a box of it before you leave. I believe they do sell those. We tried the mutton, chicken and fish gravies. And they coddled us into trying their sambar, vatha kozambu, and rasam as well.
The chicken fry was wonderfully marinated. You could taste the flavour all through the meant. The fish - delicious and I personally found the omelette quite flavourful. The mutton was good as well, though I'm used to eating it more tender. But that's just a personal opinion. Fair bit of warning, the mutton curry was quite spicy. But they gave us a helping of curd to dial it down.
Do have some of their rasam finally. Finished off with some buttermilk.
The staff was very caring. Almost like relatives who coax you to try a little more of this and that :D
It was a lovely experience.
Will be going back to try more of the dishes we missed.
:)
This place was new and I wanted to try since it has authentic name, we ordered chicken meals , chicken briyani and 65 boneless,
Briyani was tasty and not bad at all , I felt quantity can be improved,
Meals actually it is bit costly but , if you ordered chicken meals they will serve chicken how much you wanted , with other gravies.
Employees were friendly
And kadala mittai at end of billing is good , I liked it
Overall experience was good
Try and let me know your experience

KUMBAKKARAI : it is gives you home down feel, because the ambiance and decor was really good.
The staff was courteous and kind. specially Mr.Naresh, Mr suntharepandi and Mr selvakumar.
Once we're enter the restaurant they are serving a welcome drink PANAKAM is really amazing, and we're order KUMBAKKARAI VIRUNDHU they were keen on serving ( tawa fish, chicken varuval, matton chukka ( dry ) and rice with four types of Currys ) really me and my friend was floting on food. finally dessert made by coconut it's really tasty and yummy.
And once again thank to Mr Naresh and his team
Kumabakakarai : Another south Indian chettinad cuisine located at kodambakkam high road just opposite to palmgrove. ... A place where you can get a full non-veg meals.
Had good native style food here with great hospitality. The owner of the restaurant himself gave us a great hospitality with good food. Each and every dish was served with good quality and as well as they explain in detail of the process they follow to prepare the dish. Welcome drink "panagam" and their sweet which is made of natural sweetener were too good. I would strongly recommend this restaurant to family/ couples who wanted to enjoy the authentic south indian food with home made style. I would like to give one suggestion to restaurant is to place some good sign board/hodings near restaurant since if we miss the place and cross it by mistake then to reach back again in peak traffic it takes so much time.. overall I enjoyed here and sure will be going there again..
Great food and excellent hospitality. The starters Kumbakkarai chicken and the prawns are simply superb. The chicken gravy and the fish gravy also tasted good. The delicious south Indian desserts are made with jaggery
The manager and the stewards pamper the guests.

Went to check out this new restaurant near my home. Before this Kumarakom was the only south Indian restaurant in this area.
Looked like house converted into res.. Internal decor was modern and cool. Ordered spl meals which includes one chicken, Mutton and 1/2 fish starters (vanjiram). Complementary Panakaram/panagam came first, which was good. Then came Mutton chukka and varutha kozhi, both in decent quantity (pic). Then came freshly prepared seer fish fry. Though I would have preferred ayila/sankara instead of half vanjiram. Rice was steaming. All gravies, sambar and rasam were good. Peanut burfi and betel leaves and nut were given at the end. Staff were polite and attentive. Overall good food and experience.
A place where you can get a full non-veg meals. I tried kumbakkarai kedai virundhu it was good and they served me very quick and the staffs are so polite and itās worth the price too.
