Place is known for Rustic Flavours which brings the best side of the meat dishes. My favourite here are mutton chukka, Mutton Kari Dosa and Kola Urundai. Everything we ordered was good! Nice place to dine in except for which we had a bad crowd thing. So ambience wasn't that much of appealing. Bit Pricey. But is okay and compromised on quality side. Quantity is little less.
We really enjoyed all the food we had and had very good service.
Quality restaurant with a good ambience and value-for-money dishes. Biryani is good, with a mild taste and is complemented well by the gravy and raita. Kothu parotta was excellent and had the perfect spice quotient. Jigarthanda is a must-try dessert and it is quite a generous portion as well.

Went on with šØāšØāš§āš¦ this weekend, I am pretty much prefer /eat fish, so I went with other varieties in fish.
1st visit
I planned to go on busy Sunday noon, since I was late I pretty much got the table straight away.. My intention was try something different in fish and definitely they made a mark on that.
Viral Fish Kolumbu was something really special, and not too miss. Special mention Also for Mango pappu which luckily was served when I went along with the meals..
Others are pretty much the decent. Ambience is definitely a 4.5 star... Fish is a 5 star and double thumbs up.. Others are pretty much a 4 star...

I went on Sunday with family and all we ordered was south-chetinad dishes like meals,biriyani,parota+ all spare parts side dishes and fishes. we had the real taste of Madurai style food and loved it. The elaneer payasam at the end was out of the world.

Bought plain biryani and fish fingers via delivery for lunch. Biryani was of southern style with jeeraga samba rice and rich on spices. Was quite flavorful.
Fish fingers was on sweeter side cuz of sweet bread coating on it. Fish was fresh though. Could've been a bit more spicy. Adjusted with mayonnaise.
Packaging was neat and clean as well. Gotta try more of their specialties.
Coming here for the first time and the experience I had will surely make it as add on for my every Chennai trip. Awesome food and ambience and the staff is well mannered. Worth visiting with family!
Had been to this place on a Sunday and enjoyed the food. We ordered for Briyani, non veg meals, Kola urundai, egg mutton poriyal and the vanjaram fry. The star was the Kola urundai and indeed the fish curry they had served with the non veg meals was ultimate. My all time favourite is Briyani and I loved every single bit of it.. It's worth the money. Quality and tasty food.
We didnt expect kumar mess to have such an Ambience. It was really a shock to see sliding door and the quality of lighting. Don't think it is a normal mess. It is way out of the league of few restaurants when it comes to Ambience.
And similarly we didnt expect such price tag in the menu. Watch out for that as well.
Coming to food. It will give you a proper tamilnadu style Fooding experience. The taste was very good. Soups Biriyanis kothu parotas idly dosa everything was outstanding.
And also special mention for the gravies.

After an average experience at Madurai Kumar Mess long ago when it opened next to Laksman-Sruthi near Vadapalani signal, never been motivated enough to go back there. However yesterday decided to check out their T. Nagar branch with a friend for a late dinner. It was almost closing time, understandably so, only a couple of tables were still occupied. A friend and I quickly settled down and ordered Nattukozhi soup, Mutton Nenju Soup, Chicken Boneless Sukka, Kalakki (not too runny), Chicken Kari Dosai and 2 Parottas each.
This is my favourite restaurant in Madurai and I was a little apprehensive of trying out the Chennai branch but I was pleasantly surprised that they matched the taste they provide there.
The ambience was good... Spacious seatings.
We ordered crab milagu soup, kaadai pepper fry, naatu kozhi Chuka , mutton curry dosai and Jigarthanda.
Everything was perfectly made and spicy hot. Loved it on the whole.

On a Sunday afternoon went for lunch with family members of 11. The hotel was jam packed anyhow we gave our names and waited for 20 mins then we were alloted 2 tables. The ambience was excellent with lots of space in waiting hall.
We ordered mutton briyani thalakari nenjukari kadai 65 chicken 65 ayarai meen kuzhambu .
Coming to briyani the taste was the best i ever tasted with elumbu.kuzhambu. mouth watering.
Then white rice with ayarai meen kuzhambu.
Side dishes everything was at its best typical Madurai taste.

I was taken here for dinner by a fellow foodie who never stoped raving about this place, we got here and I must say that the service is outstanding.
My friend who frequently eats here knew the owner, so he dropped by to say hello and made sure that we were treated fine.
We ordered enough to feed an army, but it was all soo good that we ended up polishing it all off.
The seer fish fry that we had was excellent, the quail roast and nattu kozhi roast were absolutely delicious, the Kola urundai however stole my heart, I had never had these before and I was mind blown by the sheer flavour and texture of these fried balls, crispy on the outside, soft and almost melting on the inside, what a treat.
We also had their fried anchovies which were decent, the assortment of gravies that they served were brilliant. Loved the mutton kari dosa which was out of the world. Not to forget their parotta which was just as good.
Definitely going to frequent this place!

On my weekend trip to Chennai I visited this restaurant with family after hearing a lot about the one in Madurai. We ordered veg and non veg meals with crab omelette, mutton egg roast, and seer fish fry. The meals (both veg and non veg) were good. They served 4 gravies - crab curry, mutton curry, fish curry, and chicken curry. All were good. The crab omelet was a bit overpriced (280 INR) for the size of the omelette and quantity of crab in it. Mutton egg roast was good. The seer fish fry was decent. Overall we had a nice lunch.
We ordered Jigarthanda, but I feel the quality and quantity needs to be improved. They gave a small cup and it was not very great tasting.
The service of the staff is excellent.
Had prawn masala, one tandoori parotta and one tandoori roti. Prawn Masala was good but it serves for one roti only. Then the parotta i have to adjust with raitha. They charge enough money for the prawn dish but quantity is just not enough for a one person meal. But that's how they run the restaurant business.. very sad. Just walk-in if you need to taste authentic tamil nadu cuisine. You wont be disappointed but seeing the bill you will tend to realise how costly is a good meal in a restaurant.

There are many places mushrooming in Chennai promising authentic cusines from various small belts in south (Chettinad, Madurai, Dindigul, Couttalam/Thriunelveli, Madurai, Kongu to name a few).
Many of them disappoint you, if you are from that place/lived/eaten there extensively as you may find it a point less in terms of authenticity.
When people spoke great about this place, took it with some scepticism. First time just ordered biryani for me and a couple of friends. It was one of the best jeerasamba rice biryani I have had recently.
Then a week later we visited the place. The non veg meal, mutton kola urundai, Naatu kozhi, mini omelette were very good. The vanjaram fry was the best item of all and we ended up ordering a little more of that, to the extent none of us hade space for any desserts. One of our friends had biryani that day and the taste was consistent with our first experience.
A must try place if you are visiting T Nagar/Panagal park.

Any native brand (from other parts of TN) that has opened shop in Chennai has gone through severe negative criticisms here in Chennai. General public tends to start comparing their prices to that of their main branch. Madurai Kumar Mess was no exception. The brand has taken quite an amount of beating as people complain about their less portions and exorbitant prices when compared to Madurai. Honestly, having heard too many such comments was delaying my visit to Madurai Kumar Mess in Chennai.
Having visited their Madurai Outlet (November 2017), it was decided I'll order the same items that I ordered while in Madurai now at Chennai, too. Actually, I ended up being super impressed with the food at Madurai Kumar Mess in Chennai.
Non-Vegetarian Meals (ā¹150) comes with the usual suspects and an omelette as an accompaniment. The three types of gravies (Mutton/Chicken/Fish) and their Vegetarian counterparts (Sambar/Rasam/More) were too good. Special mention to their Maanga Pachadi which was extremely yummy. The tangy Ayira Meen Kuzhambu (ā¹220) was a winner. Loved the Mutton Kola Urundai (ā¹200 for a plate of 5) to bits. I might go back to Madurai Kumar Mess just to taste that Kola Urundai, again.
Nandu Boneless Fry (ā¹260) didn't look appetizing but it was loaded with flavours from fresh black pepper making it extremely delectable. That Crab Omelette (ā¹280) with good amount of big chunks of Crab Meat was well prepared and addictive in taste. Prawns Pepper Fry (ā¹240) which was extremely well made with good amount of spiciness hitting your throat. Vanjiram Fish Fry (ā¹250) with spot-on spices tasted good.
Total bill was ā¹2357 including 2 Parcel Meals (ā¹200 for 1 Parcel Meals), 1 Mutton Biryani (ā¹200) which tasted extremely yummy and 1 Cool Drinks (ā¹25). Service at their T.Nagar outlet was impeccable and prompt.
First of all the ambience of the hotel was really inviting.they don't make you wait for a long time even during the peak hours. We ordered chicken biryani which was too good, especially the quality of the rice, they had used seeraga samba instead of basmathi rice enhanced the taste better. The chicken pepper masala that we ordered was very tasty and spicy and went well with biryani, though the chicken lollipop that we had was a little oily but still the taste was not that bad. The service rendered was good. If you really want to have a good non-veg meal this place should be given a shot.
For now I tried only three dishes here. Will update the review next time I visit the place again. ( for sure m visiting this place again )

Kumar mess originated in Madurai, they opened a branch in Vadapalani a few years ago. The one in T Nagar is relatively new. If you are looking for a small mess, well itās not, it is much bigger than an usual restaurant. The term āmessā is deceptive in this case. The food is Madurai cuisine if you are looking for authentic food. They have some Chinese and North Indian dishes that can be ignored.
first of all I had to say superb service,they are very beloved to customers, nice ambience and we had mutton dosa and egg dosa, food tastes yummyyyy and they gave mutton bones curry with mutton dosa,it tastes super.I liked it.
Authentic south indian non-veg feast, me and Mohammed ShafeeqĀ just had visited the restaurant it was his choice though and we ordered for mutton kola,nenju curry soup and nenju curry roast,mutton egg omelette, mutton kari dosa,kal dosa, viral meen fry,nethili fry,kalaki,half boil, their coconut chutney and onion tomato chutney was so good everything was amazing nothing to be worried about except the price seems to be bit high or else you can go for an amazing kari virundhu....
If youāre in the mood good quality non vegetarian food head here right now, and order any of the dishes - you canāt possibly go wrong with them.
Probably on a pricy side compared to the portions served, but the food is delicious you probably wouldnāt feel like youāve spent a lot of money.

The nandu dosa was totally out of the world, it is a must try.
The kuthu parotta was very average.
The service was good and quick.
But I felt the food is over priced.

A feast after a long time! A fine dining family restaurant which reminds you of the roots of authentic madurai food. We had their famous Kola, Nandu omlette, Mutton chukka and Nethili fish fry for starters, which were all made to perfection. Their Parotta and Mutton nalli curry did meet the hype which 'vikram vedha' had set š And their Nandu masala was absolutely blissful!

Ambience - The place is easy to locate and brightly lit. There is parking on the ground floor and it can accommodate about 20 cars. The restaurant is on the first floor and has ample seating. Food is served on a banana leaf.

AATUKAL SOUP - Flavourful but slightly bland. The piece was slightly undercooked for me
CHICKEN LOLLYPOP - Tasted perfect although it had only 4 pieces. I wasn't very happy with the quantity.
CHICKEN SUKKA - Loved it! It was so authentic and homely making it a perfect side dish for your idlis and dosas.
NALLI ELUMBU ROAST - Wooed by its taste. The perfect dish If you're a mutton lover. It was well cooked and soft, easy to chew and the peppery taste was lovely.
KOLA URUNDAI - Tasted good although there was nothing great about it.
CHICKEN CHETTINAD GRAVY - Again authentic chettinad gravy. Loved eating it with kal dosa and muttai dosa.
IDLY - I had to give a special mention about the idly . It was so soft and perfectly cooked. I couldn't stop eating them. The thakali chutney that was served with the idly so too too good. I loved the tangy taste. Easily the best chutney I've had in recent times.
BIRIYANI - Personally didn't like the biriyani that much. It tasted bland. A total disappointment when compared to the other wonderful items .
The mutta dosai, kal dosai, idiyappam, half-boil were good too.
Service - The service was quick and prompt. The waiters were friendly and courteous. It is better you reach the place early cause we missed few items as it was late.
Overall it was a great dining experience š It might take a slight hit on the value for money.
