Great food and a definite tongue tingler. Must try their idlis. Worth the money and worth the wait. Hope they can come up with more varieties, simply because they are that good and their food comes with a difference.
One of our regular eatouts during Sunday morning. Though this place is famous for idli, but you should try their dosa varieties as well. One other thing I would recommend from this place is their sweet pongal. But drawback is parking nd this place is always crowdy.
Food packing and quality is awesome, quantity of sambar can be increase. Other then that worth for money.food quantity is also good for money
Who else provides 4 different kind of chutneys and sambar even if you buy a single idly and show the virunthoambal of Tamilnadu to others. None other than murugan idly shop. Ghee podi idly is totally a must try. Their sweet pongal just melts in your mouth while their milk paniyaaram will satisfy your dessert cravings.
Was thoroughly impressed with the quality of food and the service rendered by waiter.Had podi Idly ,wada and sweet pongal and the taste still lingers in my mouth. It was quite hard to get a table even at 10:30 pm in night .The waiter who took our order requires special mention too ..was very quick and friendly.
Experienced the soft idly ,podi idly, sweet pongal and ghee roast yesterday night ..outstanding!! Keep up the good work guys! Do maintain the quality and consistency at all times .

All of us knew their Idlis are soft and tasty. Try out their Sweet Pongal it's awesome and their cheese panniyaram all kids would love eating it. A good place to eat with your family.
This is by far the most favourite and well liked food chains in Chennai!
A big plus of this place is that they have a small ground dedicated for this restaurants parking. This is a blessing in this always busy road.
We ordered
Ghee Roast
Onion Uttapam
They always serve at least four to five different chutneys, which has always been their USP. The sambar is also tasty.
PS: Given this is a favourite of Chennai you might find the place swarming with delivery boys of food apps. Be ready for a bit of delay in your service because of the queue!
Here is South Indian. Haded , vada and idly it was nice , nice cominance gravy, worth of Monday, visit again , good keep it up
Food 5of5
Service 5of 4
It is one of the best breakfast places in Chennai. It has got a good number of branches, so you can easily find a branch near you. The signature podi idly is my favourite. Is goes good with the coconut chutney. They also serve you with 3,4 other chutnies, all of which are equally good. The dosas are also good, so is the rava dosa except for the black pepper they use in rava dosa which off put me a bit. Also try their sweet Pongal. It’s good too. End your breakfast with a fine filter coffee.
This is one of the famous quick service restaurants of Chennai and they have multiple branches spread all over the city and some even in the outskirts. The waiters are energetic and serve you with a smile which enhances the experience.
The restaurant here is airconditioned and provides the much needed respite from the sweltering Chennai heat. We went for evening snacks and ordered multiple dishes, each one satisfying you in its own way.
We ordered -
Ghee podi Idli - Soft idlis doused in spicy gun powder and ghee which gives a superb aroma. A classic combination which sets the mood for the meal ahead.
Ghee roast dosai - Crisp dosas made in ghee and served with sambar and chutney. People who love their dosas soft should opt out of this as it is super crispy.
Rava roast dosai - This is one of my favourites and I truly enjoyed it. Perfectly cooked and evenly spread, they have got their recipe right.
Raw banana pakodas -Traditionally known as vazhakkai bhajji, they are ubiquitous in Chennai. Served with coconut chutney, it is a perfect indulgence during the evening time. A must try.
Masala dosa - Soft dosa stuffed with a potato filling, this is regular fare served with two types of chutney and sambar.
Coffee - Filter coffee served in steel tumbler and dabara, this was a perfect ending to our evening spread and set the mood for a visit to the Marina beach.
I also packed a plain dosa for my two year old kid to be eaten on the way as kids feel hungry only when you leave the restaurant or house and start your journey. The dosa turned slightly rubbery but the taste was quite good.
I liked the jikirthanda one of the best shop I have ever went acctualy idlis and dosas were not thaat good but I was satisfied with the product called jikirthanda
Ambience - 3.5/5 Food - 5/5 Service - 5/5 VFM - 3.5/5 Parking - Available
Murugan Idli Shop is one of the famous chain of eateries in Chennai, having around 20 branches throughout the city. It usually stands for quality Tamil vegetarian food, and the Porur branch I visited did not disappoint. The place has acquired a reputation for its Podi Idli, which is Idli smeared with 'Podi' or 'gunpowder', and Ghee Roast masala dosa. So we definitely had to order these two.Apart from that we also ordered Rava Dosa, Masala Dosa and Banana Bajji, and washed it all down with filter coffee. The Podi Idli and Ghee Roast lived up to their hype and were delicious. Idli was soft and coated with a thick layer of Molaga Podi which was tangy and hot. They served it with three chutneys, tomato, coconut and green chutney. All three were well made.Ghee Roast dosa was golden and crisp and went perfectly well with the sambar and coconut chutney.Surely this was the best item of the menu and completely justifies the hype.Rava dosa was the regular one, but we liked the taste. Banana Bajji is not usually found in many hotels and I ordered it with great expectations. But was a tad dissapointed as it was very hard and also bland. The coffee though, made up for it and was really good, as is expected from any decent eatery in Chennai. The waiters were attentive, prompt and cheerful, and also took care the many toddlers present there didn't venture too close to the main door.
Overall, I'm satisfied with the food and would surely go again.
Everyone has their own "go to" place in Chennai for good South Indian food! This place is exactly that for me!
My favourite dish here- the ghee podi idli! Beautifully made!
But the highlight of this place is not the idli itself, but the chutneys they make! All of them are on point!
The service is also quick and what I like about this place is they bring their vadas and other stuff like sweets directly to the table for displaying it! In case u r impressed by anything u can buy it!
Not too pricy as well!
Murugan idli is well known for their ghee podi idli. So I finally went there to have. At first I was surprised because they serve idly as by piece not by set of idly which was good. The podi idly was awesome.
I tried the cheese paniyaram as well which was just ok in taste. At night there is always heavy rush . I was lucky to find a seat for myself.

Worth of cost .... Loving it
Received less amount of food than we ordered.
One of the best brands that maintain its service high in almost all its branches. Have tried Murugan Idli Shop at Porur many a times and their special onion podi uthapam is a favourite. ( Give it a try when you are here ). The idli dosa varieties and its taste is unmatchable. Good food, good service, good ambience, everything is just good. Highly recommended.
Came here for dinner yesterday, this was a newly opened restaurant in porur. As you know it Murugan Idli Shop, one for the best places where you can find the best Tamil Nadu food. Had dinner with my family here. Located right on the poonamallee main road before the bridge is very easy to locate. Simple ambiance with AC.
Well, I was really really hungry today and had ghee dosa, It came within a fraction of second. To be honest it was very fast service. I could get the smell of ghee and started drooling. It was also a bit crispy also. I finished it in 5 minutes with tons of tomato chutney. It was really good. I was very happy
We go here every week. Podi idlis is their signature dish. The chutneys also taste good.
Crowded on weekends. Prices are also affordable. Give it a try!
Where you go whatever you eat !!! Nothing can match with the food which you were raised with🤩
Sometimes pizzas and pasta would be fascinating but idly love will never fade away and it will be spirit of every true Madrasi 😋 and here is the best version of them
Ghee podi idly- when the soft and fluffy idlis are completely drenched in podi and ghee there comes the best version goes well with hot hot sambar and coconut chutney 😋
Overall obviously its the favourite place for many idly lovers like me 😍
Porur gets New restaurants day by day. This place is on the main road where ratna cafe was there before. The place is brightly lot and attracts lot of crowd. Murugan idli shop is our to go place when we want a no fuss n tummy friendly food. As usual, ordered idlis, vada n ghee roast. tasted good with their trade mark chutneys. jigardanda was not available since we went like 2 days of opening.
One of the most renowned idli shops in Chennai. The restaurant is known for its soft idlis.
I have tried their ghee podi idli and Onion uthappam.
Podi idli is spicy.
Onion uthapam made with small onions, which made it different.
They had 4-5 varieties of chutney of which tomato and coconut chutney was my favorite.
The resturant ambiance is very average.
The dishes are little expensive.
Totally recommended for idli lovers.
This review is mainly for their Mini Hall on the first floor
Pros
* As usual, the taste was top-notch at an affordable price.
* Their Ghee Pongal was like Cashew Pongal. Literally, one scoop may have 5-10 full-size cashews.
* They do have a Car Parking which can hold 6-7 cars for the Hall Customers but you need to get approval from their manager/supervisor.
Cons
* We didn't see any room for dress change in the Hall.
* No music system (I took my portable Bluetooth player).
* The ice cream served on the menu was not all good. No flavour but full of sugar (I guess it would be used in their Jigarthanda)
Murugan idli shop is a prominent place in chennai if you want to have authentic South Indian dishes. It's a pure vegetarian restaurant with many varieties of idli, dosa including South Indian meals. They have many branch across chennai. Though I visited other branches however this is my first visit to this porur branch. Loved the food, they serve you on banana leaves. Food so authentic and tasty. Staff members were courteous.
The idli is awesome , the taste of sambar and chutney is wonderful. The staff is humble and polite. They have very wonderful collection of snacks and powder podi masalas too. That's great was to show unique blend of snacks.
The restaurant is little overpriced , I think they could attract more crowd if they can reduce the price a little.
The place is hygienic , but I would say they could use air freshener for washroom . Please keep a sanitiser at washroom too. Please keep tissue papers, salt and pepper bottles and spoon & fork stand on tables.
Tried the famous Murugan Idly. As the name stands out - the idly is really nice. I had Podi Dosa as well but found Idly to be the best. It’s slightly premium but loved the chutneys and Sambar as well. It’s served on banana leave and loved my morning breakfast. Must try in Chennai
Absolutely mouth watering dishes. Vasant raj is courteous and serves food with love. Podi idli is too good to try. Sweet pongal is amazing too. Everytime im in Chennai i visit this place.
Went here all famished and surely did the steaming hot idlis made up for it.
We truly realised Ghee Podi Idli, Steam Idli, Mendu Vada & Butter Dosa with all 3 varieties of chutney. The hot sweet Pongal just melted in our mouths.
We agree that the prices are a little steep and the management should consider revising the rates or increasing the quantity.
Best thing about this place is they use banana leaf to serve all the food! Service was fast and food was ok. They just need to revamp the restaurant and look after the cleanliness especially the wash area.
Good vegetarian options and excellent service. Space could have been bigger for accommodating families.
Very tasty South Indian food..
The ghee dosa i had here last week - had no aroma or ghee taste. And the size of the dosa was also small and not enough. Still, service is good.
It's a old style restaurant like village type serving dishes like one by one but hotels looks very nice and clean and I recommend for Breakfast because famous idly you get with vapours over idly
In my opinion it is one of the most renowned idli shops in Chennai. This place is known for its soft idlis.
Though I am not an idli fan, but I had tried for ghee podi idli. Podi idli is spicy.
They had four to five varieties of chutneys. The ambiance is very average. Highly recommended for idli lovers.
This place offers a plethora of healthy and hygienic South Indian food. The taste itself differentiates it from other restaurant offering the same menu. The staffs are really dedicated and considerate. They are always ready to serve whenever sought to. The food is served exquisitely in South Indian styles.
One of best purely south Indian restaurant all idly are super and they servings hot 🔥 specially curry leaves idly ,they need improve service it takes time lots of online order, porur branch 😀 good 👍
Above average food taste, budget meals at 140.
Could add a few more varieties if possible and improve the hygiene a bit and ofc the taste too.
