A typical provincial food.
Ambience is poor. But service is good. Language barrier and restaurant manager is nervous. Not clean @ all.
Food
Gravy names are kind village girls name (enjoyable) taste is ok but not matching with name of dish.
Biriyani was worst. Aappam ans kaldosai were nice . And Nathli fry is awesome
Overall good. Price is high for those dishes . While Comparing in that area is fine.
Good!
We were 2 people reached here for dinner,
Seeking to taste Jacob kitchen,
We ordered Neichuelumbu rasam 🍜
Kozhi 🍗 Melagu & kadiapattinam meen varuval 🐟 which was Vanjaram fish as Starters.
Starters okish above average..
For main course Burma 🇲🇲 chicken gravy 🥘
Egg 🍳 appam & jawahar jaloor chicken parota which was jus like a stuffed chicken wit a thin layer of porata on a omelet base tasted 👌🏼..
Gravy tasted quite different & was good one to try..
Finally for the dessert we had elaneer payasam🍮 & elaaner hawla as other desserts weren't available at tat time, their taste were also above average.
Overall its a one time try for Jacob kitchen fans.
For the next time, i wil hav to think harder to shell out bucks for this taste 🤔.
Last thing to mention: The prices in the menu were inclusive of GST🛍

Had visited this places with my friends. This is a must visit restaurant in Chennai. Food is very very delicious. Everything here is delicious. We had been here twice. Must must visit restaurant in Chennai. Illaneer payasam is a special one here
Excellent food..... Tried their man paanai chicken biriyani and Jawahar jaloor partta... Unique mouthwatering dishes... Keep up the good work...
On my last visit to Chennai did not have time to step out for a meal, while at work, so we ordered a meal from the restaurant along with the ever so popular Elaneer Payasam.
The food was tasty and packed very neatly. The Elaneer Payasam was very rich but tasty. A must try.
Pricing was fine, just felt Rs 95/- as packing charges was a bit much.
Will definitely want to visit the restaurant on my next trip.
Lots of parking space and the food taste was awesome .. the hotel is in upstairs n the ground floor looks very quiet n calm.. Jacob Saab u r great
Suggested for its briyani, I went with my friends here, for lunch. The food here was good, but nothing was that great of sort. We ordered some fish and chicken as starters, both were good. For mains, chicken and Mutton keema briyani was ordered. The taste and the quantity was actually good. But there was nothing to call it as unique. When it comes to price, it was actually costly but fortunately had no GST.
It's located in KNK road, somewhere inside, which looked like all the more a park where there were steps leading to the restaurant.
Service was good.
My ratings are gonna be absolutely generous because I personally loved the place. Authentic south indian food that will never leave your soul. I have a few must haves you need to try...
1. Manpaanai meen Kuzhambu
2. Elaneer Payasam
3. Manpaanai chicken biryani (if you are a big fan of biryani)
4. Meen Dosai
Appam with Meen Kuzhambu tastes really great... And also Mutton Kasamusa. I wouldn't call the quantity less but it fills your stomach. Good service and a lovely spot.
This place is a must go if one likes to try out off the wall South Indian dishes. The ambience is quite ok, definitely not unpleasant and the service is up to the mark. On to the food, I'd like to mention about the quality of the meat first. I tried the the original mutton sukka and the meat was really tender and juicy with fresh flavour. The milagu chicken was rightly spiced and the Ayila fish fry was the best I had ever tasted. Although it looked slightly burnt, it didn't taste so. Muttam kanava fry tasted more like fritters but with a touch of South Indian. Briyani was just ok and couldn't really satisfy a briyani lover like me. And the ilaneer payasam for the dessert was a delight except for it's watery consistency. Overall this is a restaurant with quality.
I love chef jacob's style of cooking...The menu holds new different dishes . For soup we had nejelembu rasam and kozhi soup . Both had good flavours and perfect level of spiciness. For starters , we had chicken Chinthamani and chutney fish fry . Chicken Chinthamani is more like karivadai and chutney fish fry is very soft . we have ordered manpaanai chicken biryani, pallipalayam kaima biryani for main course. Biryanis were good and had nothing interesting . Biryani and manpanai meen kolanbu combination stood out. Meen kolambu was awesome . And my friend had fish meals which had all the fish based dishes like meen kolambu, fish fry , meen poriyal , rasam and curd. And for dessert we had elanir payasam and halwa .. payasam is a must try dessert which we went for a second round. Overall the food was good and the aesthetics they had tried to bring up a good feel . Service was good.
This restaurant is one of the very good restaurant in Chennai which I have been recently. As a foodie I use to explore many restaurants and this was in my list for a long time and finally went there. And this is the only restaurant for which am providing rating.
Taste is fantastic and really like a home made.
Ambience with a dim light looks really good.
First time I went knowing about Chef Jacob and thought of trying.. We ordered a Fish Meal...when the meals arrived it was smelling awesome...when we tasted the food...it's like a home made chettinad cooking style...the taste was so awesome..no wonder it's the taste which we have tasted only in homes ...not even in a five star hotels...then we tasted Briyani...it also was good
It was worth for money and wanted to praise the restaurant owner as well the chef who cooks really yummy food. Keep up the great work..this restaurant need to be given five star rating..no other restaurants nor any other five star hotels has a awesome tasty food..
I was a huge fan of Jakobs kitchen. Was upset that it was closed. Then came to know that it was opened as tamarind. Was skeptical about the taste. So I ordered through zomato, the all time favourite meen saapadu. Man, the food and flavour has not been altered. So much satisfied. Quickly going to visit it soon.
Hey guys, this is a well known Jacob Kitchen now renamed as Tamarind - Chef Jacobs team.. have been there long back couple of years ago.. the restaurant setup is same with improvements in ambience but no less taste than earlier.. thoroughly enjoyed the food but I guess the prices have gone high.. tasted very good... Tried appam, mutton gravy, fish.. all of them were too good.. must visit.. cheers
As some one who loves and cherishes my local food, what with all of its myriad varieties, i find it baffling and in a sense sad to note that very few restaurants dish out authentic rooted NATTI south indian regional fare and that is where TAMARIND stands out and deserves its top rating ....
An unending list of delectable eclectic little known vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes from various regions of south india (primarily Tamil Nadu) are on the menu with the popular CHETTINADU and lesser known but no less inviting NANJILNADU, KONGUNADU regional delicacies to pamper your palate ....
This restaurant was known as the popular JACOB'S KITCHEN in its earlier avatar ....
Must try dishes:
Nellikkai Rasam
Nethili Varuval
Chicken Chintamani
Meen Karandi
Vazhai Poo Vadai
Meen soru
Elaneer Payasam
Areas of Improvement: The ambience needs to be spruced up ....half a point deducted for the same ...
Location: Conveniently located in KNK road Nungambakkam with ample parking space ...
VERDICT: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ...
Chicken biriyani was awesome 4/5😍 and tender coconut payasam was highlight 4/5 .. UPPU kari 4/5😘😘😘👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 njyd well.. worth for money

They just are awesome good and try and maintain the same standards like Jacob used to maintain. Try parottas with railway mutton curry or pallipalayam chicken or munn panai briyani. All speaks Jacob's legacy.
Been there several times...it is a good place to try South Indian cuisine...hate the ambience but love the fooood...service and quantity of food should be checked.

One of the restaurants which really tasted good recent times. It was a good experience this afternoon.
Authentic South Indian food for taste....
Nei soru with meen kulambu was so good combination.. Aila Fish curry and chicken curry was good.
Biriyani was average. The thing that disappointed me a lot is the quantity. So less. High price. For 3 of us, it was 2000 to have our stomachs full. May be some will say it is average, but I still think price can be cheaper.
Ambience and service is ok. So overall rating comes to 3.5. Should visit again for the tiffin items.
Looking for some authentic Southern Tamilnadu food especially during lunch hours... Then Jacob's kitchen is definitely a place to stop by. Do not go in expecting for any kind of hi-fi ambience... We are talking about a place to simply hog when you are dying of hunger pangs... The food is great and priced decently.
I visted this place sometime back. Food was very tasty. Tried mutton kari dosai. which is too heavy for a person to have and worth for the money. Ordered Pallipalayam kaima biriyani and manpanai chicken biriyani. Both were different in taste. I liked kaima biriyani than other one. Meen karandi is kind of karandi omlet which was very good. Elaneer payasam gave us fantastic final touch.
As summary, Its really worth for money and tasty food.
Ambience is OK ...but the good thing is the food....pepper chicken, prawns, fish and popcorn chicken we ordered were really good..then the mutton biryani was good as well..not too spicy but the taste was apt...then came the icing on the menu....tender coconut payasam..just awesome...would visit again to try the other dishes..
This is a place for people who would want to try authentic South Indian dishes. The fish meals which comes with the fish curry and fried fish is very good. I love the mutton biriyani, chicken chukka, pepper chicken and mutton chukka. Their elaneer payasam is a must have.

The weekend had only the men of the family in chennai and ladies travelling to trichy for a family function...Cheers...Opportunity Galore...ha.h.ah.ah
Sunday we planned to have pucca Tamil style non-veg food.
Seen many review about Jakob's, planned for a visit...Had a tough time locating it.
Not visible from the road. They need to put some signages and also a big display in front of the hotel.
Coming to Jakob's food,
Ordered:
Mutton Rasam - In other resto's they do put in the leg piece or nenjelumbu along with the soup, but here it was just the soup. It was good and spicy.
Manpanai Mutton Biryani was normal.
Uppunkandam Mutton was excellent, the best I have had as on date.
Jawahar Jaloor Parotta was good.
Vetrilai Poondu Sadam was damn spicy.
Elaneer Halwa was ok.
Taste of Lemon Soda both salt and sweet same as in other places.
Overall good experience, service was bit slow.
Ambience looks more of a mess.
Menu and the detailing is different.
Yes, would go there once again..the ladies of the house have given an ultimatum...ha.h.aha..
Also, some of the things, we have not tried looks interesting..

A regular customer of Jacobs kitchen
Even though it has no great ambience
The food served here is purely homely
Try their kari dosa 😋😋😋
N meen sooru 😍😋
After searching tomato for an hour or two for the perfect food to satisfy my crave I happened to check out this restaurant...after a mind battle of what to order I decided to settle down with a manpanai mutton briyani and a varutha Kari kozhambu...the order came in the notified time.i must say the briyani was one of the best briyani I've had in recent times since I am a spice lover...the gravy was hot and tasty with them soft chicken pieces...I wil definitely recommend anyone to visit or order from here...@
The place gave a good feeling when you entered..... Looked more like a cottage amidst lots of greenery rather than a regular eating place..... Service needs improvement .... Food was more spicy than I thought I could handle....
After hearing about this place for a long time we happen to visit this place by chance. An excellent restaurant. We ordered a meen sappadu, chicken biryani, chicken chinthamani, nei chicken & elaneer payasam. The meen sappadu was just too good. This is a must try for anyone who loves seafood cooked in traditional southern style. It contained 2 aila meen fry, a bowl of sura puttu, nethili fry, parai meen thokku & an awesome fish gravy with a couple of pieces in it. Every single item on the plate was good. Chicken biryani was cooked with seeraga samba rice, it was very flavorful contained a lot of chicken pieces and the portion was large. Even this was cooked in southern style & served in man panai. I personally did not like the chicken chinthamani but my 4 year old kid loved it. It was more like a snack. The nei chicken was very good as well. It was prepared in a thokku style and masala was very tasty. Coming to the elaneer payasam, it was way out of the world. I'd definitely visit this place again. It's a total value for money.
PS: one small regret is they've stopped serving keda virunthu, I am just imagining how good it would have been after tasting their meen sappadu.
To be simple in words - authentic south Indian food. Each dish is one Above the other. Chutney fish and chintamani chicken were awesome. Jawahar parota is unique dish.. the starters are extremely good - mutton chukka.. the authentic taste is maintained
Checked into Jacob's kitchen few months ago. It has lots of South Indian varieties and unheard names. Not a destination for spicy lovers. Vetrilai poondu satham was different and tasty. Jaloor paratha was awesome. Lots of varieties in fish, chicken and biriyani. Your stomach will be full and worth the penny spent for eating.😇
I nvr had a chance to meet the guy Jakob who is the owner of this restaurant. Having been enjoyed watching most of his cookings in TV's. Always wanted to taste different dishes like he chooses to cook.. The same is the concept of his restaurant. The menu ll have many dishes which are regional favs in diff parts of South India. Like Jallor parota with Mutton or chicken stuffing, pallipalayam chicken masala which tastes sooo good.. Vetrielai poondu sadham, Nenjelumbu rasam which means soup, Neii kozhi varuval, a must taste Vazhai poo vadai, kaddiapattinam meen varal. A must taste Yera curry. (dont remember the excat name), Burma kozhi curry. These are different dishes tasted over multiple visits. I really want to visit often and taste all these mostly forgotten traditional dishes. I dont have any clue as how many of us still cook VAZHAIPOO VADAI in home. But my mom still does..
I mostly don't take pics..
The welcoming drink they used to give previously was very good.. Some unique taste of mint. I want the hotel management to continue to serve that welcome drink. 😊
When I eat tasty food.. I nvr bothered abt the ambience. But all I can say is it's a quite and neat maintained place. A quiet residential type restaurant. It's actually like rooms turned into a restaurant. HOPE YOU LL FORGET THE SURROUNDINGS ONCE YOU START TO ENJOY THESE DISHES.. I am happie that someone took responsibility and runs tis place even aftr the owners death. This kind of eateries shld survive.

We came here for a second lunch after hearing so much about it. We stuck to starters and they were absolutely delicious! We had prawns, nettili fry, mackerel fry and chutney fish which was out favourite. We were too full to eat more but we are definitely going back again soon with a full appetite!
Superb South Indian food. Nice hospitality but pity that there are not much people are visiting the place and encouraging our old day recipes.
Visited this place only once and loved the South Indian food offered here lots of variety on the chettinad cuisine. The place looks neat and clean. Good to go back or on some hungry day.
This is a compilation of two of my visits to this place. Cursing myself for not having written before about this place. I'm not an Ambience person but at Jakob's that's the only hitch I had. I just hope that place was more livelier so it'll match well with the Good Food that they dish out too.
Undoubtedly, their Biryani enters my Biryani Trail list. I had it during my second visit here and I loved their Short Grained typical South Indian styled Biryani. Mildly fragrant and full of flavours that one would relish in a Biryani. Mutton pieces were good too. And the Mutton Gravy that came as an accompaniment needs a special mention as I totally loved it on it own as well as, along with the Biryani.
The Nandu Rasam that I had during one of my visits was too too good. Their Chicken Chintamani and Fish Chintamani, both were pretty decent. Whereas, I loved their Uppu Kari. Vazhaipoo Vadai, can take a pass next time.
Their Fish Meals, is quiet amazing. Fish is served in the form of - Fry (Nethili and Aila Fish), Thokku (Paarai Fish), Puttu (Sura - Missing in picture as I didn't opt for it), Fish Gravy. There was also Rasam and Curd with unlimited Rice. I loved everything on my plate. The Payasam was extremely tasty. If I've to pick a fault it'll be only that the Rice was little mushy and I don't like my rice that way, but I'm sure not many will agree with me😛.
Both the times, the Chef was extremely sweet and gave us complimentary desserts. And I've concluded one thing, if you are a desserts person, it'll be a sin if you walk out of Jakob's Kitchen without having their Elaneer Payasam and Elaneer Halwa. It was simply out of the world.
food was typical south indian!fish mealsis great! chicken meals was also good! u can dine here for exact south indian dishes! though interior won't be that great still its a good place !
Went here only once with few of my friends.. didn't have parking problem but food was very normal and certain non-veg items didn't feel fresh. Ambience was decent.

Located in a very prime location of nungambakkam, this restaurant doesn't possess the polished interiors and furniture.. But what it has is a simple decor with few paintings and old styled decor in the wall. . Lighting is definitely not good. It makes the place look dull and boring.
Ordered, Vetrillai Poondu Saadham (Betel leave & Garlic rice), mutton biriyani, baby corn fry, and elaneer paayasam (Tender coconut sweet pudding). .
My Betel leave rice was nothing special. It tasted a little sharp because of excess cloves and garlic, but tasted nothing like betel leaves. Babycorn fry was decent and the payasam was awesome....
Not a great place to brandish about, but decent enough for a lunch / dinner.
Been here for a friends treat good ambience and tasty food. Not too crowded but capsule say they provided good and tasty food veg and non veg are good.
Visited this place few times earlier when jakob was there and had a chance to go for lunch today.... this is located in prime location so finding the hotel will not be an issue...valet parking is available... ambience is average a home converted into hotel.. service ok be patient for the food to arrive your table...
Choose this place if you want to have good south indian authentic tamilnadu food varieties with home made taste ... i have tried several items here... my favorite items are... neenjelumbu rasam for soup, meen sappadu and veetu sappadu for meals, neikozhi varual, mutton varutha curry, vazhaipoo vadai, babycorn varuval for starters, maanpanai biriyani and parotta with railway mutton curry are good alternative to meals.... also elaneer payasam is good.... price is affordable... i would definitely recommend this hotel to try it once if you are a fan of authentic tamilnadu food...
A pucca south style restaurant with a home style ambience. Their chutney fish is a sure pick. Layer parota. Nei kozhi varuval. Jawahar jallooor parota. (It's a fun To see them make this parota) Kari dosai.
Personally, I loved the interiors. It's a warm place with old decor, somewhat reminiscent of coffee house in Kolkata.
Tried the meen soru, was not disappointed.
Service is on the slower side.
Possible a recommendation for couples going out for lunch or dinner.
It's slightly heavy on the purse, but then - the food and the experience make up for it.
The ambience is average with old mythological paintings and decor. Furniture is below average. Service is slow.
The veg veetu saapadu was an unlimited regular south Indian meal. And everything tasted good for the price especially the poondu rasam and payasam.
Veg biriyani came in good quantity and was filling. Tasted average.
Egg kotthu parotta was also average with very few egg pieces.
Elaneer payasam was brilliant as it is a famous delicacy.
Pricing is economical.
Awesome food awesome service by the people ambience is ok. Perfect South Indian traditional food. For family it is perfect dine out place😍😍😍
We have been here on a very boring weekend and we actually enjoyed the food. The taste and the service was really really good. The only thing that i feel to be corrected is the food could be served faster ;( there is a long gap in serving every dish, it kind of irritated us. I would have rated 4 if there is a proper service. Overall okiesh experience for this price 👍
Started in memory of the famous chef in Chennai - Jakob, this has been favorite for their biriyani. Thali's were decent though.
Been there 3 to 4 times, their trademark cuisines for me saw a dip in quality and taste. They couldn't keep up their trust which I had in my first visit.
Even though this is sought out to be a perfect South Indian lunch place when one of your relative comes from abroad, not a one which surprises you.
If you are planning for your first visit, I would certainly recommend this high.
Okay GO for the second visit.
Certainly NO for the third one.

I don't know how to describe this experience. Food doesn't match the price. They have all different kind of food. Chindamani Chicken is normal chilli chicken.
Firstly , Jakob's Kitchen is a paradise for Non Vegetarians . At least I am told so . I went in with minimal expectations as I had seen the menu before hand and could either not really find mouth watering veg options or could not decipher the coorg/mangalorean names. But yes , a few non veg items , my friend tells me are worth trying - Crab , Chicken curry etc albeit most of the dishes are on the spicier side , irrespective of which 'Tarian' you are . I went for the Drumstick Soup ( Not any great shakes , quite bland in fact ) , Vazhapoo Vadai ( was probably the best item of the day , very crisp and tasty ), Jawahar Jaloor Paratha ( I still don't know what it was ...served this with very spicy kurma ) ...my mouth was craving for desserts , but I did not want to take a risk ! What if the Payasam was laced with Green Chillies ? Settled down with two bottles of Kinley .. Again not my favourite but if you are a spicy tooth with a craving for sea food / other NV items , this would be your place , perhaps .
Visiting this place never materialized for one reason or the other and finally broke the spell couple of weeks back. Even though It's easy to find the spot, it being right opp. To Sandy's is how I navigated my frnds :)
It was late afternoon n the place was bustling with life. We joined another family in the waiting line. After about 20mins, we were seated in the table near the entrance which was empty all along. Not sure why they didn't think of it earlier. The corner being a bit dingy might be a reason. There's no ambience whatsoever. The place was not given any care cause we could see dust n dirt on the side frames n walls.
I personally didn't like our table but the thought of food made things plausible.
Orders:
Nenjelumbu rasam: It didn't even feel like a NV soup. All I could taste was a bit of masala, turmeric n salt.
Manpanai chicken biriyani: the rice n chicken had been cooked really well and the masala wasn't overpowering. Main plus being that it's not one of the tangy tomato rice that we're served in the name of biryani at most places. At the same time, nothing out of the ordinary.
Kari dosa: it was dense. My frnd struggled to finish it. It felt more like a huge oothappam n wasn't impressive.
Meen karadi: Excellent preparation. Fish n egg cooked to perfection to make an absolutely soft irresistible dish. You could sense the flavours distinctly. Neither of them overpowering the other. Won my heart as soon as I took the first bite.
Kadiapattinam meen varuval: a fish fry with a slight twist in the masala. It had been marinated pretty well and fried to the right point so it hadn't lost the moisture. It was also not oily which made the fry all the more yum.
Desserts:
After we saw that elaneer payasam was the clear favorite of the peeps, we ordered one of that and a Sirguma. I hated myself for going with the crowd after tasting Sirguma cause it was mind blowing and I ended up stealing the cup from my frnd. The combination of pineapple and dates was tantalizing n mouth watering.
Elaneer payasam was not so good n I couldn't understand why it was such a hyped and fast moving dish.
Jacobs kitchen's Meen Sapadu (fish meals) was too tasty and filling. It includes 2 pieces of big fried fish (Kanakeluthi), few pieces of Nethli, soraputtu, fish curry, fish thokku and kesari. Fish thokku was just outstanding. 😊
It's a restaurant on Khader Nawaz Khan road which is focused on South Indian cuisine. Inspired by Chef Jakob, they have tried to put their own twist on traditional dishes
1. Ambience is below average. Lighting is bad. Walls are dirty and have old paint. Tables aren't arranged strategically. Not much privacy.
2. Biriyani is very good. Traditional south Indian Biriyani. The meat was cooked well and fell off the bones. Quantity was just right.
3. Ordered a chicken chintamani, a chicken popcorn started. They tried a South Indian trust on the chicken popcorn but it wasn't vey successful. It tasted a lot like paruppu vada with an overpowering taste of fried curry leaves.
4. Meen Dosa is supposed to be good. I haven't tried it personally. There are other interesting items on their menu.
Been to this place just for the love we had for Chef Jakob. RIP. Loved the quality of the food and the variety that was available. Meen soru was amazing. The ambience could be made better. Except the fact that it took a longer time to get served everything else was just fine.
we went here for lunch group of four ppl
ambience-ok
music- tamil songs
parking -road side
ordered soups some rasam spicy n good
sweet corn chickn soup not upto d mark
best is fish meals ...
chickn biriyani also good
as well as kuthu paratha
staff coutaceous
dis restaurant fr casual lunches
p.s try fish meals
Went here after a long wait, had been planning for some time. The rave reviews on Zomato was one big reason to finally make the visit. Since I was alone thought of ordering a biryani. They gave me a refreshing welcome drink.
Service and overall looks of the place was good, there are earthen pots hanging on top you. The place is large with several rooms offering seating.
The mutton biryani with finely chopped pieces came. It was good, but the taste didn't justify the price I felt (like it was said in most reviews). Despite the high price the quantity in one full plate wasn't enough to fill me up. Amount of mutton was also very little I felt.
The other items are probably much better, need to go back to try those.
Meen saapadu ..... hmmmmmmm yum yum yumm... If any time you have craving for fish, do visit this place.
Meen Saapadu : The plate contains 2 big fried fish with nethili fry, fish kozhambu etc. I bet you will sweat when you eat this ;)
Place is not maintained well and it gets rushy on weekends. but food is yummy !!!!
Heard a lot of good reviews about this place but I've always been skeptical because the cuisine is strongly influenced by dishes from kongu area ( Coimbatore , erode, Salem etc) and being from that area i knew that there's not much variety in food there. But man was I proven wrong!! The place introduced me to the cuisine of my land and it was sooooo good :)
Ambiance : its done up like a usual family restaurant. They have tried to bring the south Indian influence with the Kadai turned into ceiling lights etc.
I've been to the place twice so I'm including the dishes from both the visits.
Nenju elumbu soup : my mom ordered this and I could tell that she was loving it because she didn't utter a word when she was eating. That's the best certification there is to it 😜
Chutney meen : shallow fried fish with spicy chutney on it. So spicy and so good. The fish was cooked so well and went sliding down my throat.
Meen karandi : famous coimbatore dish .fish in egg cooked in a karandi ( paddle). Little oily but was good too .
Pallipalayam chicken: though they dont have it on their menu they said they could prepare it. Sooooo good, the best chicken preparation ever!
For the main course
Jawahar Jaloor Parotta : never heard of it before! Chicken stuffed in south Indian parotta. They tasted as good as they looked. There was a good amount of stuffing in there.
Meen sapadu : fish meals that included fish curry , sura puttu , a whole fish fry, nethili fry , rice. @ 350rs odd this was VFM.
Non-Veg meals : chicken curry , mutton curry rice and chapathi
Kari dosa : the meat masala was so good
Chicken and mutton : too good. Especially the curry that came with it made it even better . the meat was cooked well .
Egg Paniyaram : hot and crispy and so delicious.
And at last the dessert. The first visit we didn't go for dessert and the second time I was the only one to order dessert. And I went for the
Mettukudi pudding : biscuit and custard pudding with crunchy yummy peanut chikki . man was that good! 😍 . the best I've ever had
The service was fairly quick and the staff explained the dishes well. Hoping that they would open more if these.
Hats off to the late Chef Jakob for creating such an authentic , innovative and unique menu
A very good and fulfilling restaurant if u are looking for some authentic Tamil dishes from over the state. The taste is also very good. The ambience could be improved. They take a lot of time for service as they are undermanned. Good food but plz go only if you have the patience to wait.
A couple of Malayali friends of mine were tired of Pizzas, Pastas and dosas and were craving for some home food. They had tried Kumarokom many times and liked it too but wanted something different.
Enter Jakobs Kitchen, and inshort my friends loved it. We ordered Parottas, Ghee Rice, Fish Gravy, Vanjaram Fish, Mutton Chukka and a couple more items. Everything was absolutely delicious and they loved it. They were actually surprised that Chennai had such a nice restaurant for Kerala food.
A must visit for all lovers of South Indian food particularly Non Veg with am emphasis on Fish and Mutton.
Definitely worth a revisit for me.
Couldnt find the place the first time.. got lucky the second time oly.. its kinda secluded and is present hid behind a wide front space..
Coming to the food Typical south indian.. initially was given a cup of complimentary lemon juice .. then ordered nenjelumbu rasam soup which was so typical of its taste.. meen karandi manpaanai briyani were the best.. kari dosai was quite huge and was good.. had ordered burma mutton curry did not like it as it tasted sweet.. egg aapam was ok felt it was little sour.. no complaints on the service but the ambience is just average .. but overall definitely worth trying once for all south indian food lovers..

Visited this place with my then boyfriend. We ordered biriyani... the biriyani was extremely tasty... the only reason I am giving it 3.5 is because we found a long strand of black hair amidst the food. When I see hair... I lose my appetite. The staff did take it away and bring in other food but I didnt feel like eating anymore. It just got me thinking of how hygenic their kitchen actually is. However, their yelanir payasam which I had earlier was extremely delicious. I might give this restaurant another shot when I visit Chennai again.
I tried out this place after so many years and the menu been prepared by Chef Jakob is something fantastic.Personally my Mom likes all of his recipes to be cooked at home.Talking about this place,it seems to be the same old restaurant with no big changes and the food hasn't changed much too but needs a bit more refreshments which can make it even more better.I ordered Chicken Chintamani and Chicken Biriyani.Chintamani was well fried with that juicy crunch of the dough tasted wonderful and the Biriyani was not bad with a single piece of chicken in it would be nice if it had few more.I would also suggest if the outer looks of the hotel develop a it would look a lot more brisk from outside
This is one of my favorite home like restaurant food is just lip smacking and the service is fantastic only problem is to get a table here and the dishes are just like home made flavours and spices are just amazing must try chicken chinthamani, Kari dosai, panneer varutha Kari, jawahar jaloor parotta, egg karandi and nothing tastier desert as Kambu halwa with the taste of heaven like elaneeer payasam.
Our order for two people non veg fish meals , and Chicken briyani. Briyani is yummy but the quantity Is not satisying! Fish meals is good but the fish fry isn't really great at times. Really crowded place takes time to get a table. A lot of time actually. Parking is an issue as well.
Jakob's kitchen. This place has been in my cards for a very long time. Finally got to go there with my friends after a beach hang out. We were a group of seven.
To start with, the locality of this restaurant is at khader nawaz khan road near the Harley Davidson showroom. Few metres in that road and to the left you will find this resto at the first floor.
Their ambience was quite ok as they have renovated a house to make this resto. So don't expect much over ambience. Their hospality was really gud and the staff were very courteous and polite to us right from the start.
This resto would offer you some of the finest taste of chettinadu food and all the dishes were associated with several localities of Tamil nadu. We started with soups and ordered nandu rasam, vimalakka kozhi chaaru, nenjelumbu rasam and murungakaai rasam as one of us was a veggie. All of the non veg soups were really spicy and tasty especially kozhi charu.
For those who don't understand the names of dishes, you will have their description in the menu card. (As all are Tamil names)
We then ordered the starters - Uppu kari which was very average. Then we were accidentally served chutney meen varuval which wasn't ordered by us but it was too gud that we ordered another one. It was the best of the pick in starters. Prawn bajji was an ordinary one neither gud nor bad. Kadiapattinam meen varuval was another highlight. Chicken chinthamani was soft and juicy with a layer of spice over it. Chicken karandi reminded me of egg kalaki which I use to have and it is gud to try. On vegetarian, we ordered vaazhaipoo vadai - tasted like a home made one and was gud, chinna cholam varuval - normal babycorn 65. Kara paniyaram tasted ok even if not great.
For main course, we tried Pallipalayam khaima biriyani - the best biriyani they serve I wud say. Manpaanai mutton biriyani also tasted gud but not great compared to the former. We were unlucky to miss jawahar jaloor porotta - one of their specialities so we had to go for kothu parotta - mutton and veg both tasted really gud. Kari dosa - not as gud as what I had in madurai konar mess but worth trying.
Egg appam was a normal one. Mutton kasamusa was the curry we went for which reminded me of the brinjal curry we get with biriyanis but with flavour of fine chopped mutton pieces.
Finally desserts, we ordered lime soda but we missed their special ones - Elaneer payasam and Elaneer halwa. So went for Sirmuga - Semiya kheer with coconut flavour which was a perfect finish to our sumptuous dinner.
Final verdict - A must try resto for Chettinadu Non-veg lovers. A perfect place to have fine chettinadu dishes. For veggies - have a look at the menu before deciding this place..
Just visit ths place atleast once to eat KATTU KAMBU HALWA its a woowwww..othr than tht th price is reasonable .meals r good.. Can have a good time with family...
Where : Jakob's Kitchen, Nungambakkam
When : 23rd December
How did I know about this place : Through Nearbuy (formerly Groupon)
Deal : 3 course meal for Rs. 159 per head
Nothing flashy about the restaurant apart from a big canvas poster of Chef Jakob. I'm informed by my friend that he's very popular on television. The tables and seating is very basic. We were greeted well n were taken to our assigned table pretty efficiently. We were told by the gentleman serving us that they get about 40 odd Groupon guests each day for lunch.
Chicken Chintamani : crunchy chicken balls. Crunchy on the outside n soft inside and tasted really good.
Lemon juice : had a distinct ginger taste and was served chilled.
Mutton Biryani : was served in a pot with a boiled egg on top and tasted good. Among the better Biryanis I tasted in Chennai. Mutton was well cooked. Was served with a yummy raitha and gravy. Sufficient for one person.
Desert : Some payasam made of tender coconut, coconut milk n coconut water. Was the best of the lot and made me crave for more.
VFM : Completely. Would certainly visit again.
Yummy south indian fare , tastes like home made /mother's food. Decent for vegetarians too.
Jakob's kitchen is opened... had been there for lunch with family, good choice of food and it's authentic food, taste was really really good. Not expensive at all. Anyone wants to try out authentic southindian food this is the place. Don't miss out the flavours and authenticity of the food.
The real homemade foods. Thank you Tamarind for good tasty foods.
I've been here at least 7-8 times in the past 3 years, and I love the place.
Everything from the menu to the ambience reeks of traditional south Tamil Nadu cuisine.
Must-tries on your visit:
- Appams (costly at 70-80 bucks per piece, but they're the best Appams I've had in Madras city)
- Jaloor Parotta (if you want, you should also go and stand next to the stove at the reception, where these are made. Fun to watch!)
- Chutney Meen Varuval (tasty and soft fish fry starter)
And for Dessert, don't miss these:
- Yezhaneer Payasam
- Kaattu Kambu Halwa (Halwa with a type of millet)
- Mettukudi pudding (rich pudding with ice cream, etc.)
Dedicated to Chef Jacob. You multi choices. Meen sooru is fantastic. Fish briyani, palipalayam mutton kheema briyani are few varities you shouldn't miss out.
The restaurant closed it's operation in khader Nawaz Khan road with effect from 29.11.17
Nice place for sea food. Enjoy it's taste.cost is normal. Some dishes felt bit high. But still for the taste we can afford it
Awesome place to eat authentic Kongu cuisine. Food is absolutely delicious. Quantity and quality ie taste you get for what you pay is too high.
Must try place.

Guys!!! Believe me, I can only say Wowwwwwww.. The food they serve will remain u your grandma's recipe and taste.. A home foodie will reach to the highest level of satisfaction on food.. Simply to say, whomever loves home made food, must visit this restaurant atleast once!!!!!!!
Great food! But very poor service. Majorly non vegetarian. Try the Meen Thali meals which gives you a variety of fishes.
Food tastes good. Every dish was spicy though. Very courteous staff and no complaints On the service.
This is same "Jacob's kitchen" . The prices are hight after gst , one good thing is the menu card will show the price along with gst . Try fish meals (INR 350) .
