Was in here for Dakshin Routes a curated collection of South Indian delicacies. For the first time in a buffet, I got to try new dishes few which stood out were
Ulundu Kali - a rounded dessert which was very soft while tasting great, there was another dish placed near to it that had a more sweet taste to it which I could not find the display name.
Kambankool - it was served in a smaller version of the pot which had a bland taste
Vegetarian sides - they had so many vegetarian dishes where many sides tasted delicious.
The only gripe was the number of non-vegetarian dishes/ desserts were less.
How can i not do the dakshin route, specially when i have been in search for some good non vegetarian food in Tamilnadu!
The story starts with the Dakshin Routes the food festival at Spice Jar!
Must say i am not a buffet person at all! But this one is totally curated keeping in mind their regular guest as well as the festival. Me like always, opted for only the festival specials.
Must say the best that i had in recent days! Chef Vellaisamy Ganesh and team have done a fantastic job. The spices and flavours are something very unique and full of flavour!
Special mention to the massi gose bonda (dry Tuna ) balls, it was unique.
The valliyur zamin erachi curry ( mutton curry) had some subtle yet amazing flavour.
The fish curry and biryani totally bowled us!
The savouries and sweets were authentic and totally yummy! Please note the dessert counter has other items too!
Since the appam festival is on too. We got to try this awesome appam combo. Mallipoo appam (Jasmine flavoured appam) was soft and ful of flavour this was served with kheema and sweet coconut milk! One of the best and least expensive!
The festival is on till 17th November for lunch and dinner!

Dakshin Routes - The food festival happening at Spice Jar, Residency hotels (T nagar) takes you on culinary journey through the rich food traditions of southern districts from Madurai – Virudhunagar – Tirunelveli – Kanyakumari.
The Buffet spread was very huge and many of the dishes were home-made delicacies prepared by experts brought in from these districts.
Tamarind flavour is the magic formulae for most of Tirunelveli dishes and you could taste it in every signature dish.
My most favorite was the Ervadi Kozhi biriyani made with seeraga samba rice. Madurai’s Hot coin parottas shallow-fried in oil, and usually served with non Veg gravies .
Rice with Sodhi and Bonda Morkolambu is something not to be missed
Rejoice and indulge in an array of delicacies such as Suseendram Bonda ,Ambai kozhi kothu, Valliyur erachi kozhambu, Kanyakumari meen puli kozhambu and Sattur kozhi varuval , poondu kozhambu, vatha kozhambu, avial , variety poriyals made with vazhaikkai, and the irresistible manathakkali pachchadi, to name a few!
The desserts had delicacies such as the all-time favorite Tirunelveli Halwa and other varieties such as ravai urundai,Kozhukattai , porulvilangaa urundai & the marvellous inippu sev, Murukku varieties and Paanagam
The festival runs till 17th November and is priced at ₹999 per plate
After long time met chef Kishore in The Residency hotel. We used to step in to Mainstreet in Residency Towers Hotel where we met him once we liked the way chef Kishore approached us and made us to eat a lot .Now we came to know tht he was here so we stepped in , lovely food today we had at spice jar . This is our first time visit to spice Jar. Wide variety of food both veg and nonveg equally displayed . Mouth watering starters . Chef Kishore explained us the buffet spread and others service staff was very active towards guest .
The buffet price also a reasonable one when compared to other buffet restaurant . Today not much crowd in spice jar so my kid enjoyed a lot . Chef abdhulla made us a good lava cake for my kid .she enjoyed .
Here we found very good hospitality .
Will make sure will plan a day to be present with my whole family to spice jar.

Went for lunch buffet along with my friends. Wide spread buffet. Tasty. Good choices to both veg and non-veg. Value for money. Service is too good. Starters are on table service. Live counters are the special mention.
Is it old or new, it’s a dilemma and taste is really old (no pun intended). It’s really awesome. In particular the chicken and sea food. Kudos to the chef!
The place though small, looks like had a makeover recently.
This place makes me return, it’s magnetic. Well it’s the taste that attracts
It was nice place and had a dinner on this new-year. Pasta was very good. the waiter and captain was good. I like the approach of Mr. Jayaraj, fish butter carving was fantastic and no word to appreciate their work. I completely enjoyed.
Visiting the spice jar for dinner after hearing about the buffet spread. The buffer had a good mixture of dishes suiting both veg and Non veg. Mr.rajaram and his staff took time to patiently explain it to me.The staff gave us excellent service thought it was crowded.Every good ambience and tasty food.we really enjoyed very well.we are planning to come for New year Eve.
spice jar staff had clearly made it their mission to ensure that all guests today would enjoy the Christmas vibe . The staff were dressed in festive outfits and environment was very christmassy , the festive buffet had a good mixture of dishes suiting both veg & non-profit veg which was important as our group had mixture of food preference , Mr.Rajaram & his staff have to be praised for their efficiency even though it was busy . Mr.Rajaram ensured that he explained the menu thoroughly to us & gave spot on recommendations . The veg people loved the 8 treasures veg while the others had a scrumptious meal of turkey & roasted chicken . The plum pudding was a perfect way to end the meal.
A couple of us decided to visit Spice Jar for dinner after hearing about the buffet spread. There was a balanced array of both veg & nonveg mains. Chicken, fish & veg starters were freshly prepared and served. Do try the dessert spread & ice-cream counter. Staff have to be commended on their service despite the crowd.
Happy to share about this restaurant, i had never recommend anything before , but the food and service we got made me to do it. As the whole city knows today is the best climate , and i know we wont get it back again ,so we dont wanna miss this chance and decided to go out with my friends and finally ended up in coming here ... The service was excellent & the food was amazing .... And one thing about the roasted fish .... Omg guys you should try atleast ones ... And there were variety of dishes with new recipes ...we really loved the ....thank you Spice jar and team ..... Good luck with the new menus ....
Visiting the Spice Jar for lunch is a worthwhile deal. We decided to drop in for lunch on a whim & was surprised by the range offered. Staff gave excellent service & ensured that we received piping hot starters-a combination of veg & nonveg. We loved the seafood briyani & other mains. Whole roasted fish is a definite must try. We made room for dessert after a satisfying meal.
Awesome food and great hospitality..great ambience and the staff were really polite. The table booking was easy to make . Great going can include more starters in their buffet
Our visit on 19/10 during lunch at Spice jar, food was awesome, service was so great with humble, their welcome wish touching with heart amazing.. Many restaurants does some what respect / concern to their customers, but here it is outstanding.. my child went on to counter and tried to help herself, chef was holding her plate and explaining each dish. The Team of Chef Ganesh & Venkat are well trained in customer service with smile. we will come back & recommend to your friends & colleagues ....

Hello everyone,
So here I want to share my experience with you all.
I visited this place for the special NELLAI FOOD FEAST, in which the main focus was on typical traditional South Indian dishes especially from Thirunelveli and nearby places.
The place is combination of distinct aromas, tastes, and their own spices which justified the name of a place. Since I'm not a South Indian girl, so it's hard for me to memorize the names of dishes. Apologies for that!! But yeah it's a buffet place, you can go and check out by your own and give a chance to them to serve you with their twist and turn.
I got an opportunity to met a humble Chef who personally suggests us for dishes to pick. Staff of the place was really well trained and generous and are aware of chronological order of serving the food.
Recommended.
Bon appetite!!
Happy Customer!! :))

This is one from the buffet menu called "Nellai Feast" in Spicy Jar. Its main theme is from the whole side of Tirunelveli with all their Traditional dishes. This dish in particular stood out from others. The chicken was cooked inside the coconut shell, the masala with the juicy and boneless chicken blended very well. It had a bit of chettinad. It was medium spicy after all. You will never leave a single piece behind! 😋

Spice jar - The Residency
A very good place to have a different kind of buffet mainly for the people who are really bored with the normal buffet places.
I visited this place for the special traditional nellai food feast which mainly focus on traditional south Indian dishes from thirunelveli and the villages around the place..
Though I'm a south Indian guy the dishes I tasted there were really new to me and I really loved it... One of the best dishes among them is valliyur kohzi varuval , surandai nethili meen varuval, ulli bonda , puliyangudi kozhi biryani , viraal meen kulambu , periyathazi Kari kulambu , sepankilangu roast , poondu rasam , idithankarai urulai poriyal , thiruvathirai Kali , inipu sev vengaya vatha kulambu , keerai sambar and last but not the least the famous thirunelveli halwa...
The taste of the food was really good and yummy I didn't find any negative point to explain about it here...
So the overall experience was good so people try this place and share your experience...

Spice Jar, true to its name is an amalgamation of distinct flavors and aromas. The open kitchen has live preparations of starters and grilled items. Chefs are always present to guide guests through a wide range of cuisines and specialities. The chocolate brownie was awesome and so was the jeera samba biriyani.
Good restaurant, prices are moderate and food was great. Polite staff doing great services. Will definitely recommend this restaurant to friends.
We visited the Spice Jar lunch buffet during a weekday after shopping. The ambiance made us feel right at home. The buffet spread was well stocked even though we had gone around 2.30 pm. The staff were very attentive and provided impeccable service. Assistant manager Mr Rajaram gave food recommendations which we hadn't considered and enjoyed trying them out.. The buffet was worth the price but the attraction is that its proximity to the shopping area yet quiet enough to have a satisfying meal.
Best place to eat visited with my family more variety of south Indian dishes family enjoyed lot in this place the food taste like home food the people take care well morning we get some live cooking food also thanks for the team we will visit next on my family trip

We visited the Spice Jar for buffet dinner after hearing about it from friends. We liked the cozy atmosphere and the decor befitting its name. There was a lovely spread of dishes. What caught our attention were the intro cards placed near each dish, describing it. The appetizers were served fresh to us. We tried a bit of everything and were very satisfied. The dessert spread attracted us and we just had to make a bit of room to try a few. Service staff were attentive. Would recommend this place as a cozy place to enjoy your dinner.
They are served good quality food and lots of variety food in the buffed restaurant i never expected this kind of healthy foods.

Been there a couple of times for buffet lunch. Good food. Nice ambiance and service. Suitable for family dining. Few dishes in the buffet spread can be improved tho!
OK so let's start off, I first visited this place a couple of years ago. I then visited this restaurant again yesterday for my birthday.
Firstly
Food !!!!!! OH MY GOD Its absolutely amazing. The Biriyani is just absolutely divine and the saffron chicken kebab is just mouth wateringly delicious. And the appetizer drink which consisted of Pomegranate and ice cream is just to die for
Ambience !!!!! Really good. Calm and quiet place. BUT i feel that it would be much much better if they had a live band or a DJ playing some nice calm and composed jazz music.
Alcohol !!! Had ordered a Corona Beer, it was really not good though, it wasn't crisp at all compared to the kingfisher pitcher we had ordered as well. Now I'm not sure if this is the restaurant fault or the beer company's fault, if its the latter then please ignore the above statement.
Service !!!!!!!! The service staff was extremely attentive and Mr. Philip who I think is the Maître d'hôtel was extremely courteous, attentive and ensured swift service whenever asked for something. Was also extremely knowledgeable when it came to the food. The staff really made us feel like as if we were at home.
Overall we had an amazing experience, was really delighted by the service provided and I would definitely recommend it to everyone else who wants to have a nice buffet.
I had come with my colleagues for corporate lunch. I would recommend this place to someone who has patience. The service was very bad and had less resources to handle a crowd of 23 (being a 3 star restaurant). However, the starters which were served very slowly were brilliant, super delicious and worth the wait. The buffet had lots of varieties. A few that had impacted were salads, noodles, Manchurian, mixed rice and side dishes. There was nothing special about desert section but by then I was already satisfied for the money I am paying. As we were not satisfied with the service there, we did not pay for the service charges.
Suggestions: Staff attitude could be improved. Service must be quick accordingly.
Service: 3
Ambience: 4
Food quality: 4.4
Price: 4

Loved their buffet! The dal kichidi was very yummy and I love how it's one of those places that have a good variety of indian sweets in the dessert menu. The service is great, spread is excellent and I love their buffet. They have kept the quality up for quite a long time now!
Spice Jar has it’s Lucknowi Food festival by Chef Zashimuddin and Executive Chef Vellaisamy Ganesh till the 17th December 2017. Upon a recent invite, myself and other food bloggers made our way to Residency for dinner. The Place is decorated with lights and aptly depicting the name of the restaurant “Spice Jar” is shelved with jars of different spices.
Lucknowi food festival 😍❤💌 This food festival is currently happening and I would definitely recommend you guys to try out!! 👍
I was so excited to try their different varieties of food of course ❤ First thing I noticed was the Ambiance 😍 it was just so nice the lights and that feel I totally loved it.
The next thing is the buffet!! Omg there were n no. Of varieties to try.. there were seperate counters for veg as well as non veg..
The welcome drink is the badam milk ❤ It was so yummy 💌 and then the starters were stuffed mushroom tasted good and the chicken was so good!!
Special mention to "aatu kaal gravy" omg I was drooling!! ❤ Definitely a must try!!!
And there comes everyone's favourite 💕 BIRYANI ❤
There were three varieties of biryani one is chicken and then mutton the other one is mushroom ♥ mutton biryani is my fav of all since I love mutton more than Chicken !! I've tried all the three it was so good. 👍
And then Desserts!!! 😍
Mutka Kulfi woowww 😍 there were two of types actually 😍 I loved it so so much no words because we always have place for desserts 😍
Since I wanted to try everything as much as I can I ate cake, gulab jamun etc etc ❤
I strongly recommend you guys, this lucknowi food festival is currently happening so don't miss it.. ☺
We keep arranging lunch for our employees here as food is very good with lot of variety and value for money the best part is no.soda is added and
hence.no stomach bulging and uncomfortable feeling very friendly staffs
I went for a reception for a friend of mine. They had arranged a buffet near the reception hall.
There were varieties and they had aloo fry, gobi aloo manchurian, fried rice, sambar rice, roti and paneer butter masala, curd rice, papdi chat and live dosa counter.
The dishes were tasty and only disappointing thing was we had to wait for dosas in the live counter for a long time and even after waiting few of my friends did not get dosas.
The wheat flour got over. There were only 2 people in the counter to handle the crowd of 50+ people.
They could have been prepared well and managed well instead of doing last minute preparations to make and bring dosa flour.
Other than that, it was good food experience.
We visited spice jar on new year and they had an extensive spread. Liked the chicken and fish starter. Broccoli soup was tasty. mutton biryani that was made out of jeeraga samba rice was very delicious. I liked the chicken gravy too, right mix of spice and flavour. Most of the veg dishes were average, too many fried items were there. Dessert was ok. Overall we were content with the spread but it was crowded and chaotic after a point.
Superb food, Ambience and Service. Especially, now being Andhra food festival is being celebrated, had nice varieties both in Veg and Non-Veg. I liked Biriyani, Tandoori Murgh, Ulundhu Vadai (that too coarsely ground... Hmmm...), Gongura Mamsam and the entire range of Desserts. Love to visit again soon.
How would you like your food? Mildly spiced, medium or spicy or like really spicy? Well, most of the times I like it spicy and I have found many like minded foodies in Chennai. And apart from local food, we love to devour the meals from neighbouring state Andhra Pradesh. Well known for its spicy nature, we love Andhra food. Apart from being spicy, the spices and region specific dishes have their own appeal.
Let your plate do some Gongura! - Andhra cuisine 😅
As the Tag suggests, The fiery cuisine of Andhra is here to tickle your taste buds with their spicy food by Chef Srinivasa Rao.
Spice jar, A restaurant which is part of The Residency is hosting this Andhra Food fest that is happening till the 29th of January, 2017.
The Residency is located in the busy road of Tnagar right next to AB's.Make sure you don't get confused with The Residency Towers which is also located in Tnagar.
As we enter in, We found the place decorated in Andhra style with a hut, bullock cart and pottikadais that gave a traditional Andhra feel.
Coming to the food, They have a wide variety of Veg food compared to the nonveg varieties and a live Kitchen.
Non Veg:
Hara Mirchi Murgh Tikka | Guntur Mamsam | Royyala Vepudu (Prawn Fry) | Mutton Biryani | Warangal Kodi Kura
The prawn fry was way too good.It had the right amount of spices and flavors.Cooked perfectly.Chicken Tikka went on well with the green chutney.
Veg buffet:
Bhindi Jaipuri | Carrot and Beans Veppudu | Tandoori Arbi | Ulava Chaaru | Aratikaya Fry | Gutti Venkaya Koora | Gongura Pappu
All these veg varieties made up good sides along with rice.
When it comes to Andhra, One thing that shouldn't be missed is their pickle & Podis along with Rice and Ghee. OMG, That heavenly feel when you intake Rice along with Ghee and Pappu podi along with the pickles is vera level feeling.
Live Kitchen:
Mirapakkaya Bhajji | Piping hot Andhra Fried Chicken | Pesarattu | The Perugu Vadulu | Nethili fry
I personally preferred the Andhra Fried Chicken that was served pipping hot and had flavors of perfection and topped with some podi.
Desserts :
Arisalu | Semiya Laddu | Gajji Kayal | Maida Halwa
These were the traditional Andhra desserts available.Gajji Kayal, tassted more like Kaaju Katli was my personal favorite among the rest.
Apart from the traditional desserts, they also had Fruit Triffle, Tiramisu, Apple pudding, Mango pastry.
If you're looking for some Traditionally regional buffet place for Lunch or Dinner, This is the place to go.

It’s time to tickle your taste buds with the best of fiery regional Indian cuisines! Check out some scrumptious food from the spiciest region in the country – Andhra!!. The 70+ seater done up in bright yellow, had a small hut with a Bullock cart on one corner and a mini pottikadai setting on the other, adding a touch of the ongoing festival.
Spice Jar Multi Cuisine buffet Restaurant at The Residency is hosting an Andhra Food festival which is from Thursday 19th to Sunday 29th January 2017 with both lunch and dinner buffet option that's available on all days.
A food festival which is dedicated to only Andhra Cuisine that focuses on just the flavours of Andhra and the delicacies made by Chef Srinivasa Rao.
The restaurant is located right at the ground floor. The ambience gave a perfect feel of the festival happening with a small hut, a bullock cart and a small tuck shop with all their famous spices that were set up. Apart from these, few movie posters of veteran actors and few tollywood songs added to the festive mode.
The spread was huge, with lots of options for vegetarians and non vegetarians.
We were served a welcome drink - Panagam, which was not bad, which was then followed by Mushroom soup which was good.
We tried few lip smacking non vegetarian authentic delicacies such as Chepala Pulusu- fish in tangy sauce, Thottakura Mamsam - mutton with amaranth leaves, Warangal Kodi kura - Andhra version of pepper chicken and Andhra Chicken pulao.
The vegetarian selection consisted of choices such as Mungakai pilusu- drumstick in red sauce, Bangala vepudu-stir fried potatoes, Dondakaya kobari - a coconut dish and Mamadikaya pappu - lentils infused with mango and the famous Pulihara. Each one was tasty in a unique manner.
What's an Andhra meal without the pickles, pachadi and podi? There were three types of podi, two types of pachadi and three types pickles out of which I loved the pappu podi with white rice and mango pickle along with few drops of ghee. The gongura was amazing too.
Along with all this, there was also a live counter which had few specialities like Pesaruttu - dosa made with green gram that was served along with green chutney, Perugu Vadalu - vada soaked in beaten curd and Andhra chilly chicken - tossed in chilli paste. Loved the Andhra chilly chicken from the live counter.
Coming to the desserts, the options were perfect to satisfy sweet tooth cravings. There were Gummidikaya Payasam, Kobbari Pappu Payasam, Belam Pongali and Paalakova. I loved the belam pongali.
Head towards Spice Jar, to experience a blast of flavours and taste of the spiciest region in the country in your palate.
Diverse cuisines, as diverse as its cultures, exist across the length and breadth of the country. Celebrating each cuisine for its individuality is something we’ve always found comfort in. One such cuisine that’s close to us especially for its fiery deliciousness is that of Andhra (collectively). Spice Jar at The Residency has come up with an Andhra Food Festival for this month, till the 29th of January.
As you enter, the elaborate decor to connect you to their Andhra theme is a tremendous effort. The setup resonates rural Andhra vibes with its Tea Shop, carts, clay pots and festive decor all around. Neat, traditionally dressed staff fill the room, again echoing the Andhra theme. The buffet comprises of Chinese, Thai, North Indian and of course, the speciality of the week Andhra cuisine which is synonymous with extremely spicy and tangy food prepared by Chef Srinivasa Rao...

This is small buffet place, nicely decorated. Cleanliness is to the expected level.
Waiters were very friendly, especially Mr. Sankar who took extra effort to guide us while making our Mongolian bowl.
Started were limited and average. 1 for non veg (lemon chicken) and 2 for veg (kara dosas and veg ball).
Salad bar was awesome.
Main dishes spread was extensive and no complaints. Refills took some time which should be avoided.
3 ice creams with all the toppings, at least 10 desserts were present. Many desserts demanded another round of tasting.
Curd vada and curd rice with assorted pickles and chilli was also kept.
Nans served at table.
Mongolian grill, consisting rice / noodles with over 40 herbs / condiments / fillings (both veg and non veg) and the sauce of your choice was the live station. It was up to the mark.
Chef came to all the table personally to enquire about the taste as well as any requirements.
Value for money.
Definitely worth trying once.
I honestly don't know why this place gets such a bad rap - I went with the family yesterday for their dinner buffet (vegetarian) and overall we had a pretty good experience.
The ambience was a bit dated which put me off at first, but service was good (to be honest, that could have been because it wasn't that crowded so they could focus on us), and most importantly the food was excellent.
I'm surprised there weren't more people there on a Friday evening - we were there from 7 to 9 pm and not too many people showed up other than one extended table for an office gathering :(
We had soup for starters, a salad bar (we loved the 'rainbow' salad and the pasta salad!), and tons of appetizers across genres - the baked & stuffed zucchini rolls, lotus stem stir-fry stood out.
There was something for everyone, however the main course was mainly Indian - mixed keerai rice, rasam rice, peas pulao, shahi malai, dal makhani, paneer makhani, dahi vadai, cauliflower fry, fresh bread that you can order - we chose phulka that was super soft and the stuffed paratha (passable) - and curd rice to finish with as we South Indians like to do. :)
As with most buffets, there were some misses: their live grill for this month was Mongolian themed - appetizers from there were cottage cheese momos and bread bajji - those were good, but the main attraction, the noodle bowl, was a little too spicy and bitter for us. Some misses, like I said, but mostly hits.
The dessert bar was my favorite - and again, something for everyone: caramel custard, beetroot halwa, shahi tukda, payasam, fruits, fruit pizza (?), vanilla cake, milk cake, black-currant cake, orange tart, banana pudding, ice cream, chocolate strudel I can't remember all the names honestly, but there were a couple more.
My only regret is that I was too full to eat more and try everything exhaustively. :P
The buffet here was tasty, but very expensive & that too went there ,when there was a thai food festival & in Live Counter, they had squid,Fish etc...Variety was there, ambience was cool, but a little congested but too expensive...
We seven friends have been to SPICE JAR twice till now. Both the times we tried the dinner buffet. It was amazing. We all enjoyed it. They have even included region deliciously in their buffet.
Pleasant memories of a few years ago prompted me to suggest Spice Jar for a Company lunch. What a mistake !
While the ambiance is pleasant, the food and some of the serviceleft much to be desired . Though there were a number of dishes on the lunch buffet, only the crab singapore was worth remembering. Its not that the food was bad, but you expect to give at least a "very good" if not an "excellent" rating in a place like this at this kind of price. The desserts and the coffee saved the day
While one of the waiters was very good, the others were rather indifferent. One veg starter arrived only when we asked for it and the other came midway during the meal !
I hope they improve , and soon !
Late night again and we had no choice and wanted to eat something light and not to overload, jus ordered a dosa and my friend went for the salad and that was top of the world. Dosa again is meant to be good not to talk a lot about.
I jus loved the place and been there once but never observed so much, the place is peaceful and stands apart and names says the concept of the restaurant.
Let it be a late night coffee or lite meal or snack, be it in this place and many might love it ..
I went here with my colleagues. I had visited Main Street in the other Residency hotel which I didn’t like at all which made me to doubt if the taste here will be good or not. The spread here was not huge but a decent one, the taste was better than Main Street
Loved the ambiance of the restaurant & smell of the herbal blend curries. Mutton dum biryani & tandoori chicken was my favorite & had a taste of all the vegetarian curries. Should try masala dosa with sambar & green chutney.
we wanted to hit absolute barbecue so badly... but couldnt hit it as it was crowded.. then we decided to go to residency towers.. it was quite crowded.. extra ordinary food.. not many types of starters but .. excellent main course.. we got dwelled into the taste of the food.. there was crab surprisingly.. then coming to the desserts.. and that gola.. it was worthy..😘😘😁
starters the basil fish was nice. Nonveg maincourse was good! sum more spice needed in biriyani! naan nd rotis should be somemore soft! veg maincourse was good one ! had many varieties! desserts are the best part ! should hav somemore starters I prefer
We had gone with friends for their saturday dinner buffet..
Food was good and tasty.. liked all the dishes abd buffet had huge spread with 11 veg main course nd 6 non veg main course.. dint try the veg dishes much.. liked all the dishes on non veg counter.
Service was good.. felt there could have been few more waiters to service quickly..
Ambience was ok.. not grand but simple seating to access the buffet..
Overall experience was good.. we all enjoyed our dinner..

We were staying as guests at The Residency and were provided complimentary breakfast yesterday 31 May 2015. The complimntary breakfast had such a vast range of food items available as a buffet for we mis-took it for lunch! Starting from South Indian, yes all States including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra, North Indian to Continental. The lay out of the serving table and dining table and the taste of every item was fresh, filled with aroma and mouthwatering to say the leastl. The staff were also courteous right at 7 am in the morning! Great work Residency and its staff. Keep up the good work. Decided to drop in for a paid lunch or dinner on our next visit to Chennai from Bangalore.
This is not a place where you can expect a lot of variety on non veg ... But you can certainly for vegetarians.
the food is marvellous.. The taste the out standing
The non veg available is of limited variety but the are perfectly cooked with brilliant recipie.
The vegetarian part is so huge that you don't know what to pick, but everything is tasty

An awesome place to spend time with friends over an assortment of food. Gud to relish & enjoy. The buffet has a good spread and the desserts and a mouth watering treat. A must go place...
The spread is really nice. The ambiance too. But special only in South Indian food. It would be better if they other type food too. The desert spread is really good, have a room for that without missing it.
It was my friend's bday and we were looking for a budget weekday buffet. Zeroed in on Spice Jar, Residency which also had an Groupon Offer. Residency is a three star hotel located in GN chetty road just under the flyover. Been there countless times for family functions so kinda knew what to expect.
Spice Jar has glass walls and you can see into the restaurant as soon as you enter the hotel’s lobby. Most of the tables were taken by the time I walked in. Was surprised to see a nice turnout on a weekday.
The food is stacked against the wall which is adorned with huge jars which as you could guess contains various spices justifying the name of the place. Started off with Chicken Manchow soup which was decent. The fried noodle which is supposed to go with the soup was placed along with the salads in another section.
Pepper Chicken was the Non Veg starter and it was superb. The standout dish in the buffet overall. Was spicy, boneless and cooked to perfection. Only downside was that it was not hot. Even new batches which they refilled was not hot. Lukewarm at best. Would have loved to have it hot.
Veg Live Counter had Tawa Subji which contained an assortment of veggies tossed on a tawa. Not good. Also had Crumb Fried Cottage Cheese served with Dip. This was also below par. No discernible taste in them at all. We first ordered it and asked the chef to send it across to our table. After about 15-20 mins, we came and checked on it. Seemed like he forgot. Happened once again when some of my other friends also ordered from him. Once is fine, shouldn't keep happening repeatedly imo.
Moved onto main dishes and started off with Baked Egg Florentine which was decent, gave a miss to Crab and Fish preparations. Murgh Masaladar Kebab with Mint chutney was good. Had at least 5-6 pieces of huge Chicken Pieces. Mutton Briyani was almost devoid of pieces forget them being good or bad. Briyani was okish. Had a bit of Veg Noodles along with Roasted Potatoes Broccoli Nuts which was a interesting new dish which I kinda enjoyed on its own.
I have had far more authentic and better Thai Veg Curry than the one on offer. Heard Panner Lajawab was awful so refrained from trying it out. Finished off the Main course with some Curd Rice along with Urulai Roast which was a good combo.
They seemed to have a pretty decent dessert section and had Caramel Custard which was ok, Pumpkin Halwa which was good and Semya Rice Payasam I avoided after watching my friends grimace which trying to swallow it. Creamy Kala Jamun was the standout in the dessert section. Dry Jamun with a dollop of cream on top was out of this world. Milk sweets were good and Ice Cream was the last thing we had before leaving.
Service was pretty decent expect a few things here and there. Water was refilled on request and not done without prompting which I think they could work on. The chef at the Live Counter shouldn't have memory loss loften. That should be something they have to take care off.
Overall I would say it was a decent buffet for this price range. Good variety and when it comes to buffet you should never expect all the things to be good. Just as long as the good dishes outnumber the average ones, you have a winner on your hands.

there are more options in veg buffet than non-veg. fried rice was good and the biriyani too.desserts were pretty decent.ambience okayish.starters were okayish nothing great about it..
Spice jar is on the ground floor of Residency! Am writing this review after visiting this place 4 times in last 2 years. (all buffet)
Service was great and usually people come here with Groupon buffet deal, bit noisy crowd :) a great place family dining, neat & great ambiance!
They servers alcohol with buffet as well there is la carte. Food taste differs from time to time and their buffet spread was not so innovative and i felt some items are repetitive. Their starters are very good and they servers 2 veg & 2 non veg for dinner. Apart from that there main course & desserts are not something special!
Am bored of spice jar, will not visit again :(
Spice jar as the name it suggests had a wide variety of vegetarian main courses compared to Non veg. Priced at 700/- incl. of taxes. The menu has one soup in each with 2 starters in veg and 1 starter in non veg. Non veg main courses had chicken, mutton, prawn whereas the Veg had paneer, potato, dal, chole, spinach with mushroom in white sauce with wide variety of salads and raw veggies. The deserts had mouse with ice cream of four flavors and some Indian sweets.. Overall a decent and filling dinner. I was expecting a couple more starters but not bad.. A neat and nice ambience too.
One of my favourite restaurant in Chennai. Their buffet is just worth the money... the chef Mr shanmugam never fails to impress the audience with his speciality dish like payasam or halwa varieties and the fish curry and if you are lucky enough you can relish the sweet and sour crabs which is available occadionaly in z buffet. Their briyani gives us tge authentic flavour and blend .... you have varieties of salad i love the chilli pineapple and raw papaya salad n the vinegar soaked cucumber.... lots of varieties to make a choice for the main dishes . I usually limit myself to some briyani some pasta or noodles n fish curry if available.... the bread pudding is something you shoud never missed .... its just the right dessert not too much sweet n cold one which makes you to devour on it like anything.. i was lucky enough to have celebrated several birthdays and anniversaries over there
My favorite joint for dinner. Their apple mayoniese salad and pineapple chilli salad just draws me. Food is pretty hot and kept so. The soups could be a lot more thicker.
this is a relatively new restaurant in a very popular, congested and easily accessible part of T.Nagar.
i had been to chennai on a 3 day business trip and was put up at the nearby quality sabari inn and decided to check out what "spice jar" has to offer.
let's get to what matters - the grub!! the buffet started off with one veg (gobi manchurian) and one non veg item (irani chicken kebabs). the kebabs were really succulent, aromatic and rightly spiced up - the strong aroma of persian and irani spices was just right to set the appetite up.
caution- those who dont favour strong north indian / afghan / irani aroma might end up calling it "smell" and disliking it!! that will be injustice for sure.
the main course was long and detailed but HEAVILY TILTED towards vegetarians. the options boasted of 5 non veg items and 12+ veg options!! being a carnivore to the core, i immediately walked up to the non veg section. :)
the non veg items included a chinese fish preparation, a french egg gravy, a semi-gravy afghani chicken amongst others which i can still feel in my mouth! ;)
the dessert options included a good mix of pastries, ice creams, sweets (incl. bengali rasgullas!), payesam amongst other goodies.
overall,
ambience - very family like but equally good for groups of friends who are not very boisterous
service - nothing to write home about but fairly ok
location - very convenient with parking space (i was there on a wednesday; not sure about weekends though)
price - 1,300 for 2 non veg buffet meals on a weeknight
food - mixed feelings. just 2 starters but tasty. limited non veg options and too many veg options. not a good deal considering the price. save some space for dessert if you are tired of too many veg options.
visit again? i dont live in chennai so not probable. even otherwise, no!
Try out the lunch buffet at the Residency - spice bar.
The served started were not good.. especially the veg starter was some kinda stuffed bun, with fruit i guess.
The non - veg chicken schezwan was soggy.
But once you start on with lunch the varieties are really mouth watering.
There are more combinations available on the veg menu
the salads are good, especially the ones with green mango in vinegar., pickled mango etc.
the deserts are also varied with mousses, cakes. payasam, ice cream and fruits.
Good worth for the money you pay..
Went to the buffet Lunch at Spice Jar - it cost me 625 inclusive of tax. For the quality of food, the variety at display, the desserts, the service - IT"S A STEAL!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved it!
Being Kiruthigai - Mom said she would murder me if I had Non-veg today. Can't mess with Mom can we? So,,,,, sadly, I just sniffed at the Non - Veg dishes and dragged my way to the vegetarian section - and what a delight it was. Before I describe the veggie delicacies, let me just tell you what was in the Non- Veg section - Cream of Chicken Soup, Chicken Kebabs for starters, Mutton Dum Biriyani (Smelt divine, did not taste though, Mom - I am a good boy), Chicken in Schezwan sauce, Singapore Crab (boo hoo, hoo, bawwlll) Fish in some chettinad gravy (My Bhabhi who came with me said it was WONDERFUL, grrrrr) all of them looked great, I am definitely going there on a day I am allowed to eat meat. Bhabhi said all of them were great except the Crab was a tad smelly :-) .
Now to my favorite section - SALADS!!!! Broccoli, Broccoli, Lots of it, with around ten varieties of Salads, some of them great, few average, one or two were bad (the picked cabbage, the cucumbersalad etc). They had veg lasagna - decent, the usual suspects like cauliflower manchurian, noodles, etc. some continental stuff like potatoes in mint sauce (mehh) their south india and north indian dishes ... aahhhh, that's where their strength lies - chou chou kootu was real nice, they had a veg kola urundai - awesome, very good paneer butter masala, kashmiri pulao was very nice too, desserts were decent - gulab jamun top notch, along with the pineapple gateaux, fresh fruits and four flavors of ice creams with nuts and chocolate sauce, they had an interesting oats and chocolate payasam, an acquired taste! :-) Overall for the money more than enough value. Good Job Spice Jar keep it up One request - get rid of the Kenny G CD ( I have been hearing it for the past decade) there are better CDs now in the market. Cheers, Prem

Had been there for an office party three months ago hosted by our boss...overall it was very good...there were quite a good number of veg ang non-veg starters, all of them tasty.they also had a great choice of mocktails around 5 which they kept reserving in request...that was gud service...the main course was fine except that non-veggies may lack in options.their chinese and continental stands apart...paneer and dal were awesome...not had such good dal makhani in chennai....dessert spread even though limited was great...on the whole it was a classy feast at a very highly affordable price, that too in a 4/5 star hotel
