The Mayflower. Even from the outside looking in, the cafe feels like a place outside time, its own special feeling taking over you when you’re there. First impressions are important, and the Mayflower definitely makes a captivating one. Tasteful, distinctive decor is the norm here. The place feels wooden, rustic, yet at the same time, nothing is too distracting from the main agenda of a visit here… the food.
Moving on to that - the food at the Mayflower is plated perfection.
The French onion soup was delectable, perfect right down to the temperature, just right for drinking. It was very light, just the way a soup should be. There was a generous amount of vegetables in it, cooked well and frankly delicious (atleast for a veggie lover such as myself). There was zucchini, carrot, baby corn, and, obviously, onion along with French beans, and sliced mushrooms.
The mushroom dumplings were steaming hot and extremely tasty - with three kinds of sauce for accompaniment, and paper thin skin, loaded with filling.
The peri peri fries were a bit soft for my liking, but perfectly spiced. The chefs are great at presentation, and the portion size is gratuitous. If you’re looking to eat dinner here, don’t eat lunch… or you’re going to regret not being able to eat all the things you order!
The bruschetta platter - the bruschettas had perfectly toasted bread, and great fillings (olives, tomatoes, mushrooms and cheese).
If you can only have one starter I'd pick the crispy American corn - it's an absolutely genius dish, laid on a bed of cabbage and decorated with some genius looking carrot flowers, and I had to restrain myself from eating so much of it because I still hadn’t gotten to the main course.
As for drinks, the watermelon caprioska is pretty damn good, with a little bite of ginger and mint, very refreshing and a great accompaniment. The leprechaun margherita was perfect, sweet while still striking a great balance in the salty portions.
For the main course, we had the chicken Khao Suey and the Veg Moon Fan Fried Rice.
Both are unskippable dishes - the Khao Suey is literal heaven on a plate, served with nine kinds of topping (including roasted garlic, fried onions, peanuts, chopped spring onions… the list goes on.) The broth is rich, creamy, delicious, and it has two kinds of noodles - crispy and soft. The chicken chunks were soft and delicious, cooked to melt-in-the-mouth perfection. There’s a whole hard-boiled egg in there too, if all this wasn’t enough. Long story short, your taste buds will thank you after you eat this, but you’re going to have to hit the gym pretty hard.
The Moon Fan fried rice is a simpler dish although not lacking in ingredients, with many vegetables, and three kinds of mushrooms. The rice is fragrant and well-spiced, steaming hot when it arrives, and the dish overall is a (much) healthier alternative to the Khao Suey.
Overall, the Mayflower is an excellent, excellent choice whether it be for a quiet, luxurious dinner, a fun day out with friends, or even a family lunch, and I recommend checking it out whenever you are in the area, especially since a meal here definitely isn’t going to break the bank, with their family-friendly pricing.
