Me, wifee, friend and his wife and a friend went here after sitting out at Brew Room discussing where to go and eat!

Our orders were

Me and a friend shared "SathaiMurungakai Charu". Definitely a must try!

Starters:

Makka Garelu: Masala vada with corns. It was nice. Worth a try!

Batate Bubble Dosa: Quite uniquely shaped like bubble crape or ice cube moulds which had some potato filling made from rice batter and lentils. The design was interesting and so as the dish. Good for a try!

Basket Pepper Mushroom: a medium spicy Mushroom dry preparation of 5 pieces each placed on top of rice crackers.

Pinjee Cholam Pepper Fry: Baby corn pepper fry with a tiny portion or herb rice and mashed potato.

By the time we had starters, I was like - man, I think I am done. But mind says full and tummy says empty!

Mains:

Vengaya Oothappam, Kal dosa : both were served hot and tasted how it should be! Nothing special about it.

Bun Butter Parotta: a unique dish with 3 prices of Parotta styled Bun which actually looks like Paav and comes with Khurma. Definitely worth a try!

Service: Very good. Everyone at restaurant were pleasant & courteous. Since we wanted to meet and talk, we didn't rush to eat, we didn't bother much about preparation time, but I don't think orders got delayed.

So, if you want to try some quirky starters, this is the place to be. For the main course w.r.t price, I may think. But definitely worth a visit for the interior and food.

Very nice and tastefully done ambience. Innovative menu with multiple options from the southern states. The bubble dosa is a must try and so is the curd rice. The lower rating is for the slow service which I'm certain they would fix it.

Fancy but not an overly experimental menu - attempts to provide a variety of southern flavours and mostly succeeds. Had tomato coconut milk soup, cauliflower fry, pappu, steamed rice, baby potato fry and butter milk - everything sounded and tasted perfectly south indian. The ambience and service are definite positives.

Had visited the restaurant fir Dinner with family and kids.

Food :        5/5
Ambiance: 5/5
Staff:          5/5

Food: The place is must try for pure vegetarian foodies. We had DOSA (Ghee Roast, Panneer Stuffed DOSA).
The Ghee roast was perfect. The Panneer Stuffed DOSA was above the mark. It was not too spicy and not too dull. It was perfect.

Ambiance: The place is designed according to old traditional method. The seats, the paint and the lighting will remind you of your grandparents home.

The highlight and unique of the ambiance is the AUTO design which they have come up with. It is surely a different experience to sit in the auto seating (they have converted the real AUTO into SEATS)and have the food. The children will surely love the AUTO and elders too.

Staff: The staff are really good and make you feel like a monarch. They are so courteous and humble.

Suggestion: The kids chair could have side and front handles to hold them up without any support.

Price: The price is little higher and the management could consider in reducing it a little bit.

Thank you Southern Street for a wonderful experience !!! Will try to visit again.

A decent vegetarian restaurant. This was more of an exploratory visit, so we only ordered a few dosais and kuzhi panniyaram. The taste of the items was authentic. The chutneys were zingy and made for decent accompaniments. The jal jeera could have done with one slice of lemon instead of two.
Definitely worth repeating visits in order to sample the menu fully.

A desi restaurant which servers some of the traditional south indian dihes. This place is best for vegans.I liked their dining seating on an autorickshaw which was very classy.
Coming to the food:
They initially serve a welcome drink (tulasi water) and papads.
I ordered cheese dosa and rava dosa, and both tasted average......the rava dosa was not cripsy and in vegetable cheese there were no veggies other than capsicums and there was less amount cheese in the dosa which was a great disappointment .
Their service was good. And the place is not much crowded.

First thing that comes to our minf the moment we go to the restaurant is their great ambience. The service is also very good and staff is very attentive. Tried out their thali in which each and every item was very delicious, especially the soup was one of the best I've tried. There are too many items in the thali which can be reduced and the cost can also be reduced a bit.

Been here for the 1st time with my in-laws...the decor is very nicely done with bright colours n giving it a olden days look at few places. the food is tasty and of good quality but is overly priced. Bisleri Water bottle s charged at 90Rs where the MRP s clearer printed as 20Rs. We had 5 tiffins n 1 starters n 1 soup, the bill was 2100. We have very less South Indian options in city, so Might go back to eat once or twice coz the food is good but surely not frequently coz it’s expensive.

Southern Street was a pleasant surprise to us. Located at a Quiet place off the Busy RK salai, it's a welcome addition to Chennai's food scene. As the name suggests, the place is all about South Indian Cuisine.

The Ambiance was elegant. The tables resembled "Namma Oor" Autos. There was also a dining hall with normal seating. We opted for the normal seating as the Auto Rickshaws were full.😜

We were served with Complimentary Thulasi water as welcome drink and Vadams with coriander and tomato chutneys. The Vadams & the chutney were really good😍

We ordered the Batate Bubble Dosa for Starters, Vengaya oothappam, Uthiri Poo Idli Usili, Pesarattu for the Main Course.

Batate Bubble Dosa was a novel twist to the regular Masala dosa. Was a little on the spicy side. The Vengaya Oothappam was the best I have had so far. Crispy and soft at the same time. The Pesarattu with Ginger chutney also tasted good. The Udhiri poo idli Usili is a distant cousin to our idli upma and came with a layer of mashed potatoes. Yum yum. The Sambar & three chutneys were delectable and complemented well with all the dishes. We had ordered Masala Almond Milk which was mildly sweet and soothing.

At the end of the meal we were served with sweet saunf and Savory saunf. This is Probably the first time in my life I have come across the concept of Savoury saunf. Innovative.
The service was excellent. Mr Peter was a Delightful host. One of the best places I have visited in recent times.

Quirky, colourful and really cheerful. That kind of sums up the ambience. The place is definitely interesting and the food is different from the usual fare. The service was welcoming and efficient. The taste was very good... a tad bit spicy for our kids but acceptable. Good variety and excellent spread. The sambhar and chutneys are amazing and therattipaal for dessert is something you dont see anywhere else. Awesome!!!

It's a newly opened restaurant in the city with the best South Indian (vegetarian) delicacies.

Food :
Paneer Papdi - Perfectly crispy papdi with a perfectly cooked paneer topping. I loved the starter.
Batate bubble dosa - It's a bubble crepe with potato stuffing. It was so soft and yummy in taste. This is their signature dish and I loved it
Bun parotta and Tarakari korma for main course - The bun parotta was perfectly roasted and the Tarakari korma was so delicious.

The rice appalam and the chutneys were super tasty.

Overall the food was quite delicious as well as healthy. It was more like authentic home cooked meal.

Ambience - The ambience is so refreshing and pleasing. I loved the colours and the decor

Service - The staff is so friendly and approachable.

I was looking for restaurant with different and cool ambiance which serves South Indian meals to take my wife on her birthday, got this option in Zomato, seeing it's pics and review went with this option.

Location and Parking:
This place is easy to locate. Just opposite to Savera / Woodland restaurant. Shares same building with Kaidhi kitchen. It is located in first floor. Valet parking is available, so no need to worry about parking.

Ambiance:
One main reason for opting this restaurant is ambiance. Right from entrance, inside lift, waiting area and restaurant area, interiors and paintings were attractive. Lighting is apt. I liked the auto theme seating where we seated. My daughter who is just 2 years was playing and enjoying sitting in it. Also it was convenient for us to manage and feed food in it. Overall it pleasing interiors and perfect place for special occasion.

Service:
The service was excellent. They were attentive throughout. Even got our feedback and taken it in right Spirit. When I asked few info about food, chef came and clarified it.

Food:
Menu has decent varieties of food among which we Ordered Special Donne thali and Southern street thali. During waiting time we were given a small glass of water with Tulsi I guess and 2 varieties of fryams along with 2 varieties of chutneys which were good.

🍽️ Special Donne thali consist of Drumstick soup, vadai, bun parotta, kurma, aloo 🥔 poriyal, moong daal rice, mint rice made in millet, veg biriyani, Sambar rice, curd rice, potato chips, thogayal and payasam. Tastewise everything is excellent especially bun parotta. Vadai alone slightly short of salt. Overall it was One of the best thali I had in recent times.

🍽️ Southern street thali consist of soup, vadai, rice, aloo 🥔 poriyal, chapati, kurma, mint rice, podi, ghee, mooremozhaga, pickle, sambar, rasam, Kara kolambhu, Moore kolambhu, curd and thogayal. I tasted podi, sambar and karakulambhu. Podi was excellent while sambar and karakulambhu was okay. My wife said she likes the thali.

Among both, special thonnai thali is the winner hands down. Overall satisfying experience.

Bill was accompanied by traditional kamarkattu and mouth freshener. Kamarkattu was similar to one we had in childhood.

Price:
It was slightly on higher side but justified by it's ambiance, service and quality. For me it was Value for money 💰

Final word - Those who are looking for pure vegetarian restaurant with awesome ambiance, this is the place for you.

South Indian Homemade flavors without adding overwhelming masalas.

A pure veg restaurant which is located above kaidi kitchen. Their ambiance has a touch of Deeper south Indian home style.

A warm welcoming with thulasi water and fryums with two variety of chutneys.

Vaazhathandu soup(plantain soup) : Not too hot nor too cold, warm enough to drink. Flavors were mild and subtle.

Batate Bubble dosai: I enjoyed this dish as it had fun in it. each bubble had potato fillings. This dish has been crafted with ideas. served with a small cup of sambar.

Mushroom basket: Pastry bowl with dry mushroom masala. I did not feel any much flavour in it, might be they would have tried retaining mushroom flavor originally.

Falafel Peasaratu: Falafel rolled up in peasaratu, falafel was bit hard and bonded thick and felt rubbery, Peasaratu was bit chill.

Thattu Idly: Podi drizzled upon the thattu idly soft and fine.

Veg Kothu Parotta

A pleasing dish with veggies and parotta, Manageable flaky pieces of parotta pcs along with well blended veggies.

Main Course

Nei Sooru with ulli theeyal and paruppu urundai kolambu

Nei sooru was a typical home style rice, as it plain tempered rice with mild spices and cooked in Coconut milk.

Ulli theeyal; Shallots curry was simply amazing

Paruppu urundai kolambu, Tanginess from tamarind, soft and delicate urundai made of dal.

Pinjee Cholam pepper fry

Baby corn fry with pepper flavour, It was not crispy but squashy.

Kolukattai paysam

rice dumplings in payasam, A subtle sweetness throughout the payasam.

Theratti Paal

The sweet that lingers all over your palate is all because of the palm candy, which gives the natural sweetness and roasted nuts all around give you a crunch while chewing.

Their chutneys were satisfying.

Finishing up with Kamarakattu and crispy rice.

Service 4.8/5

Taste 3.8/5

Ambiance 4.2/5

Located above the Kaidi kitchen, this place has a beautiful ambience totally supporting the south Indian culture. Colorful interiors well done. It's an authentic vegetarian restaurant with a twist. The variety is really good. The Batate bubble dosa is a must try here. Made like a bubble waffle, stuffed with masala and cheese, it's a treat to the vegetarians! Pinji cholam pepper fry was well presented and tasted good! It was served with some pulao, onions and masala. The basket pepper mushrooms were the best part about my meal. Totally loved it. Crispy, spicy and tasty. Great combo. Thattu idli was so soft and tender. Something different was the thooduvalai soup. It's a perfect soup to soothe your sore throat.A must visit place for all the vegetarians. I would rate the food a 3.8/5. Considering the service and ambience, I give it a 4/5.

This first thing you will fall in love with is the entire look and feel of the restaurant. So colorful, so artistic and instagram friendly in every manner. The people who manage the place did a good job. About 10 of us went from office (veg and non veg) where we had to convince the non veg folks to dine here. The food was yummy and the presentation was great. I really loved the Thattu Idly and the chutneys were fresh and yum. The ghee rice with mushroom sidewish was a hit and so was the bun parota. The palgova stole my heart while the halwa and payasam was good as well.

The number of fine dining choices for a pure veg restaurant in Chennai is actually pretty limited. So launch of @southernstreet_chennai was actually a welcoming change. Located above Kaidi Kitchen in Mylapore, Southern Street offers a premium South Indian dining experience with a small twist. The standard fare of South Indian items is offered with a slightly different version that you might have not yet tried before. Some of the dishes I got to try include Ulli Theeyal, Kothu Idiyappam, paruppurundai Kuzhambu, Pinjee cholam pepper fry and of course, a hot filter coffee to finish it off.
The service, ambience and seating areas are lovely done and a great place for a nice family gathering. Prices might be slightly steep given its a premium fine dining restaurant but the thali at around 500 is a great choice to try out most of the dishes here.. Do give it a try once for sure.

It is actually a compact place. The ambience is quirky and colourful. Food is tasty and varied. But PRICEY. Mineral Water is Rs. 90. Chole+Batura is nearly Rs. 400/-. One has to order Kurma separately for Parathas. Even a small five-piece (yummy) Papdi Panneer is Rs. 250/-. My favourite is the Veg Cheese Dosa (which thankfully does not have onion to kill the cheesiness!) but is filllled with pizza-cheese and other veggies. Overall, Southern Street is a GREAT place if you go as a small batch. It may be expensive for a large group. Also, though the prices are like a fine-dining restaurant, certain things need a RE-LOOK: The waiters need to wear gloves. The hand-wash area needs to be spic and span. The place is designed such that the food comes from the kitchen into the dining, only after passing by the washroom. This could perhaps be shifted. Small things which make a big difference..

I was visiting this place for the very first time. I’m a big fan of South Indian food, so I wanted to try some authentic dishes other than the typical dosa, idli sambhar. Plus it being a pure veg restaurant, I had to go. So we ordered rava jini spring roll with sambar, a certain kind of sambhar rice which was very nice, then paneer subzi and kabuli channa masala with parotta. The service, presentation and decor was really nice, and everything tasted good. I tried bubble dosa and bun parotta for the first time. We had drinks, starters as well as main course, and nothing disappointed us. The seating area was quite interesting. The interior decor, and lighting gives a good feel to the place. Must visit!

It's not plain south Indian, there are lot of innovative dishes for instance the bubble dosa. So now coming to the food my favourite in starters were the Rawa Mini Spring Roll and the basket pepper mushroom. In the main course I was not able to get over the amazing CC cow panner gravy, that dish was so buttery and delicious. The bisi Bella huli was great too. I did not like the bun parotta alone, it was very hard. And for desserts i loved the pot kulfi. I loved the overall service. The manager was extremely sweet and his recommendations were spot on!

Southern street is a vegetarian fine dine restaurant at Mylapore.
A very colorful ambience, the decors are Vibrant and you can even sit inside a auto and have your meal .
The service was top notch and a very interesting menu with a few unique dishes.
It is from the same team of Kaidi kitchen .
They have Vegan and Jain options also

The dishes we had :

We were given a shot of Thulasi and camphor water (Theertham) and a bowl of Fryums to start with :

1)Thoothuvalai Thulasi Chaaru Soup: A thin extract of trilobatum herbal leaves , Indian basil soup . Very Very strong

2)Badami Haalu Holige : Small cut Manglore polis served with Almond Kheer 😬 This was also one of my favorite.

3)Batate Bubble Dosa : Bubble crepe made with dosa batter and filled inside with Masala . One of the Unique dishes I’ve tried . MOST RECOMMEND

4)Papdi Paneer : sautéd cottage cheese served on a papdi . A quick spicy bite before meal

5)Basket Pepper Mushroom : Mushroom presented on Cracker basket.
The traditional Karaikudi style masala was excellent .

6)Chola Bature with Kabuli Chenna Masala : the classic bature with White Chickepeas curry . Nothing out of the box

7)Tikka Podi Idly : Mini idlies fused with podi and spices presented in kebab style . Very spicy

8)Surnali : Appam batter presented like uthappam . The almond and coconut milk accompaniment was bomb 💥

9)Paal Kozhukattai: Rice flour balls in Coconut milk . The balls were very hard and not the best.

10)Thirattupal: Palm sugar Milk Khova . This was the best dish . House made paal Khova which nobody can hate

Cost : Each dish costs 200-300₹ . Slightly high priced but justified as it caters to the upper end audience

As soon as you enter this cozy little place you are awestruck with its interior, the auto rickshaw and dummy street lights are very unique. We ordered quite a few things like bubble dosa, Ceylon paratha, appam with kurma. The healthy soups are must for everyone to try out. Probably the best drumstick soup and soya soup I’ve ever tasted. The Rava Jini Spring Roll and the kuzhi paniyaram were great starters. They also have the old school fryums/vadams served complimentary. The vethakuzhambu rice was good, albeit less spicy. This new little fusion South Indian restaurant is a welcome change from the usual South Indian fare you get in the city.

We tried a couple of new things like batate bubble dosa and falafel pesarattu wrap both of which were not something that we had eaten before yet the dishes had familiar flavors and tasted really nice. We loved the fact that they have a regular dosa and a concept dosa like the bubble dosa on the menu - something for everyone!

What we all loved the best was their Neikathirikkai kuzambu - this was lip smacking deliciousness! This gravy was spicy yet so damn flavorful. This dish is a MUST TRY.

Southern street also serves thali for lunch which will appeal to all the Tamil Nadu meals enthusiasts!

Can't wait to go back and try the other dishes on the menu.

The restaurant is part of Kaidi Kitchen with a completely different south Indian theme. Since this was a veg place, it definitely aligned with our dietary requirements. The ambiance and decor were wonderful with paintings associated with South India and its cuisine. We sat in an auto rickshaw that has been refurbished with a table and with better seating. We had a podi idli tikka and batate bubble dosa for starters which were both visual treats. They also tasted great with the condiments of onion chutney, coconut chutney and pearl onion (baby onion) sambhar. For main course we had the patani pulav sadham which is just peas pulao and neikathrikkai kuzhambu (eggplant curry). Both were delectable items and complemented each other well. It was a great experience and I would visit again to try the other items on the menu

Decent experience. Very beautiful ambience and interiors. The eye for detailing in every little artwork is really good. Do try the Auto rickshaw seats, which gives you a completely unique experience. We tried a few dishes, out of which all of them were decent. Most of the items in the menu looks way too complicated or named very differently. But in-fact, they're just the same dishes we already know. They are apparently using names from different regions in the south, but the process of choosing what to buy is longer due to the confusing names. Other than that, it was a fantastic experience!

Very nice ambience and the food is great as well. Kids will enjoy as it is auto themed restaurant but they also have regular seats. Food is traditional cuisine but the taste is awesome in most of the items. Located just next to Kaidi kitchen and worthy a visit.

It's not a classic South Indian place. They've got fusion dishes mostly. I've got to say this though, the food is brilliant. The first time I saw their menu, I had very little hopes. I'm glad to have been proved wrong. It's a great place to take your family to. Even though their dishes aren't authentically South Indian, they definitely have a good South Indian taste, with a slight twist to them.

Nice restaurant with good ambience, the paintings and the setup are extremely good. The staff were very courteous and professional, the dish names really confused us but it's actually the names from different part of Tamil Nadu. Looks a bit costly for vegetarians but for a different experience it's worth it!

Must visit!

The food taste was awesome. All the dishes we had were just too good. One star less for just the price, I mean to have south indian food, I think 450/- per head was too overwhelming for me. Notheless, if you don't mind paying extra bucks, and just want the best, then go for it

Had visited the restaurant fir Dinner with family and kids. Food : 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Staff: 5/5 Food: The place is must try for pure vegetarian foodies.

Got a running nose or sneezing or cough, forget medication, just drink "Thoothuvalai thulasi saaru". We tried it, and we also suggest it to our friends and relatives; believe me its very very effective. Also try their Papdi paneer, it is so very south indian... Here they welcome you with Jeera water and "vathal" accompanied by green and red chutneys, that prepare your taste buds for the feast to come. Presentation is very appetizing too. End your meal with a "kamarcut". Just book an auto(table) and be there
