We 3 people were heading towards Egmore, being lunch time, my friend suggested this place for lunch. This place is easy to locate. In tarapore towers near Devi / Shanti theatre. Have space to park vehicles inside the premises.
Ambiance is good for such a old building. Seating is comfortable. Service is excellent throughout. They were attentive. Food ordered came in no time. Extra / additional sambar, rasam etc were brought even before requesting.
Ordered south Indian meals which consists of Soup, sweet, rice 🍚, podi, poriyal, kootu, sambar, rasam, karakolambu, curd and papad. Soup was excellent. It was apt hot and spicy. Podi and sambar were excellent. Went well with their Ghee. Karakolambu was average while remaining items are decent enough.
Pricing is reasonable. Value for money 💰. I will be revisiting soon to try diet meals.

Our go-to place for vegetarian South Indian meals! Located in the heart of Anna Salai, this place has been in business for many decades. This is placed in second floor of Tarapore towers complex, so parking isn't an issue. Love the classy ambience, seating and lighting.
Coming to the food, love their thali to bits. Starting from soup, poori, thuvayal to more milagai, every dish is top notch. They serve vadam with soup which is an interesting addition. Though the places gets very crowded and noisy during peak hours, the Service always remains prompt and smooth. Wish they could add paruppu podi as well to their meals!! Overall this udupi restaurant is a must try.

Along with mathsya- one of the good restaurant to try the veg items.. their paper roast, panner corn masala dosai are some of my favorite. Banana delight , peach malba are items we use to order every time we visit

A restaurant with a regal legacy of many decades attached to it. A vintage place offering an old world charm that has been meticulously keep intact by the management and the staff. Food of all genres is done justice here, prepared with aesthetical sense and differentiation. Offers a fine dining experience with a cozy ambience and rich flovoursome food with reasonable quantity and quality. Being a patron some of my favourites include the mulagudani soup, veg pulao, Kashmiri pulao, veg augretine, masala kulcha, spicy panner corn and their kesar dry fruit milk shakes. Interestingly they also offer soda lime and icream floats which are worth trying.

This outlet opposite to Buhari mount road is one of the wings of Woodlands, the famous outlet in Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai. The taste is mangaluru-ish and that is dope after some mixtures with the TN cuisine (:P)!
My brother has come home after his graduation and we have been planning for dinner at various places like BR Mathsya, Annalakshmi, Dhaba Corner, etc. and finally zeroed in on Mathura. The road from DMS directly hits at this towers on which the hotel is present. The other famous places around this hotel are Devi Cinemas, Cosmopolitan club, Casino theatre, Buhari hotel, Ritchie Street, etc. Located amidst one of the will-you-ever-sleep roads in Chennai, the ambience was great. The crowd was even more than the no. of supporters of Mumbai Indians and this naturally means the order can be delayed to an extent. Be prepared for it.
Veg Noodles Soup – INR 105/-
I have had noodles and soup separately but not one with the other. This wasn’t bad as I expected but good. I would say this as my new try and it didn’t disappoint. I was able to complete 80% of it but with a heavy heart drank the remaining too (:P). Pricey but a good try.
Paneer Corn Ball – INR 174/-
After a brief hiatus, the paneer chose me and I happily had it without any extra sauce. I wanted to get the real taste whilst it’s passage from my throat to my tummy. OMG! It was great. We ordered 2 plates and shared it across. Paneer lovers, this is a must try. Let me know after you try. A bit on the higher side for a starter.
Masala Papad – INR 62/-
This is always a must have in every dinner of ours. It’s like the chandramukhi snake, divider in geometry box, Chair having all clothes, Signal in perungalathur, etc. You don’t know why it’s there, but it has to be there for you. Dipping some Papad in the soup and having it gives a new experience. Though mine had noodles inside, this made a great combo. Try it out guys.
Masala Kulcha – INR 70/-
The best of the day. Filled with enough stuffings, one big piece is cut into 2 halves and served to you. This can very well be eaten all alone, but I had other ideas. Malai Kofta, Paneer Punjabi & Shahi Paneer (Spicy) surrounded my Kulcha and I was too confused wat to do with the remaining side-dishes in my plate. See how it looked here.
Shahi Paneer (Spicy) – INR 205/-
The term spicy always comes with a tagline konjam spicy-ness kammiya kudunga sir no matter whoever orders it. This was my brother’s addition to the menu. It was great but I felt it was a bit pricey! With the biryani, this would make a great addition to the plate. You can enjoy it heavenly! Lavish is the word.
Paneer Punjabi – INR 210/-
The plate was big enough to serve 5 Naans/Parathas/Kulchas. We shared it across ourselves. This was my pick from the menu and I must admit, it was the BEST of the lot. I totally loved it to the core and it made me think of every possible combination with Paneer one must try before their death! Such is the craze you get after having this dish. I made it to stay till the end on my plate and even took a great DP with it. Didn’t mind the price. Just enjoyed it dope-ily.
Malai Kofta – INR 167/-
The thing about Koftas are it’s vegetable-kaju balls fried well and inserted in to the malai. The ball is covered with the malai and all its interiors are filled with it. The kofta went well with the kulcha and the biryani. I felt it had too much of Beet root inside that made the ball go red berserk. The kofta at Vrindavan (New Woodlands) was white and it had more kaju than the others. It wasn’t the case here. Mixed emotions for this dish and you guys decide it here.
Veg Biryani – INR 167/-
Is this even a Biryani ? Hypothetical question! We don’t have an answer and you let me know if you get to know it. The cashew and the onions were fried well and then mixed with the biryani. The last item of my plate was the biryani and it had all the side-dishes to go to my tummy. I was so full that I had to skip the dessert (my bad)! The vegetables were rightly boiled and on the whole this was great. Try it out if you eat veg biryani!
The bill was around INR 2219/- (for 5 people) with 5% GST. I am sorry I forgot to write about the spring roll, but it was okayish.
Onion Uthappam and Choco chips Ice-cream were a part of the bill but I did not have it. I was overflowing. Started home after paying the bill. Let’s see what hotel comes next in the journey! Stay tuned until then (:P)

One of the long serving hotels in chennai located at Tarapore towers in mount road. After long time visited the place. The interiors and setup are the same as it was long time before.
Started off with French onion soup which use to be one of there best. This time taste was decent.
One of my fav use to be Chola batura. It was nostasgic and felt it was same as before. Dosa with 3 types chutneys was the usual outing. Panneer fried rice and panneer punjabi was decent.
Finished off with orange delight: chocolate and orange ice-cream with nuts and sauce. Mango Lassi was good.
Veg fare For Family
Mathura on mount road is an old hotel now under the management of Woodlands.
Food here is excellent and authentic Udupi style. Idlis are a must try here. Often large family are spotted here enjoying a great time. Parking may be a bit tricky on working days. Price is normal for this type of restaurant.
Rasam Vada is also a good item to try!
Had dinner over here yesterday. The food was excellent. Dry and gravy dishes were well prepared. I had ordered from the north Indian dishes. Aloo Punjabi, spicy paneer and masala kulchas were well prepared. But the tandoori roti was a let down. The ice creams are excellent.

The last time I had visited the hotel was a decade ago when I was in my childhood.Now, I am at a better position to perceive the service offered and I have completely enjoyed dining with Woodlands Mathura.
I got myself a North Indian Thali, devoured it to the last grain. My favourite in the limited meal were the 2 gravies, Veg Stew and Palak Paneer,that were a part of it. I am a very poor eater, but their food taste was a total motivator to make me finish the meal set completely.It also had plain rice accompanied by, South Indian Cuisine's, Sambar and Rasam.
My family members chose A La Carte items and likewise enjoyed it too. The ambience wasn't modern but good enough. I believe the place was meant to attract people of Hindu culture, if true, the ambience hits the bull’s eye.
The service was Swift and were also flexible enough to alter and make changes mid- way.
Thank you Mathura for the memorable experience.
Really a good atmosphere and good structure but quantity of food should be increased and service is also bit slow which needs lots of work PLS rectify all the above problems

I ordered the Spaghetti Supreme, while others ordered mini meals and south indian thali.
The food was average, quality has reduced since my visit few years back. The ambience is fine, however the lighting can be improved a bit. Service is good. Pricing is a little above norm.
Overall it was a good experience.

Finding an exclusive vegetarian restaurant at Chennai has become my all time hobby, which I would say I am not getting tired of. It is fun to hunt for a quality restaurant and the happiness adds if the restaurant provides delicious and devour-able food!!! After much of filtering and discussion, thanks to my friend who suggested this place, Mathura Restaurant @ Mount Road, Tarapore Towers. I was surprised to read about the restaurant which has a heritage of its own. Little did I know that I had been to this restaurant when I was a toddler!! As always, be ready for a lengthy yet entertaining (hopefully) review about Mathura Restaurant.
Ambiance:
Being situated in a commercial complex, the lead to the restaurant is not that appreciable. But, again, I had to remember that it is a restaurant with its history of its own. Once you reach the restaurant (2nd Floor), you will be quiet surprised to see the crowd at any point of time. The setup and decor is pretty much simple and the air conditioning is also quite OK. I found it amusing to see mosquito repellent machines being placed at almost every pillar. The seating is pretty much OK. Let me now mention few areas where the management can improve. Being known to attract crowds, the waiting area can be better maintained. They didn't have much seating and based on my observation, most of the crowd were around 55+ aged people. So it would be great if they can provide chairs so that everyone can wait with hunger rather than knee pain!!! The other part is that the lighting was not that bright and few seatings were in dark and I went in the daytime. So it would be really attractive if the lighting is improved. Other than that, there is nothing to make you wow but also nothing to feel yuk!!! Overall, a decent ambiance. My rating 3/5

Service was not that great and also it was not that bad also. Most of the time, a restaurant is remembered not only for the food but also the service that was offered. In this case, there are lot of areas to be looked into in the service. Being a crowded restaurant, the service people were bit scarcely found. It took sometime for our table to be served with water and that happened after numerous requests only. I understand the crowd factor, but then it should not be the reason for a delayed service. Also, the hand wash area should be cleaned, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either!!! Overall, much improvement is needed in terms of table service and my rating is 2/5

AWESOME!!! Yes, the food was great. We went ahead and ordered the South Indian Thali and was able to find the taste of every dish, very much close to home style!! Particularly the sambar was so good and the radish was perfectly boiled and served!! It's been almost a week since I visited the place and I am still able to remember the food's taste and this is the one of the best way to remember a restaurant. I was also observing the other types of food that was being served around and I found the generous quantity of each item w.r.t the cost. Most of the restaurants do serve less (quantity-wise) but Mathura stands apart!!! I would be very much suggesting this restaurant to anyone who wants to taste the South Indian food. I would suggest the management to see the feasibility of serving the meals in Banana Leaf (Vaazha illai) which will increase the authenticity of the food. I agree most of them would not feel comfortable but the choice can be provided to the customers (between Banana Leaf and a plate). Overall, food wise, they are top notch - My rating 4/5
On the whole, if you are looking to take some of your aged relatives who will like to devour South Indian food, Mathura is a place you should not miss!!! Overall rating for Mathura Restaurant - 4/5
Been going here for more than half a decade... one of the underrated veg restaurants in town.. Food is always great.. and their service is the best.. and ambience is calming... This is one of the quaint places of the city. Excellent service, courteous and friendly staff, a decade old ambience give us a feel of the times when we used to go eat out with parents while we were young.
Veg au gratin was one of the tastiest and creamiest I've had ever in the city so far. The Paneer Masala had such distinct flavours to it. Sufficiently plated dishes with quite affordable pricing.

Don't judge the place by the staircase or the elevator from last decade cause what waits inside for you is just amazing. This joint is owned by the woodland group of brothers hence the interiors of this restuarent is just classy.The Menu has a wide range of cuisine starting from authentic south Indian, North Indian, Chinese and even a few Continental options. What do you say about a Chennai icon without sounding clichéd? Been taking my custom there since 1989 and never felt let down by the food and the staff. Most of the "Boys" are now "Men" but they're the same congenial souls who ensure you have the best experience. Great value for money and as tasty as home made food - try their simple thalis or their nans and side dishes, you'll be glad you went there for a slice of old Chennai

Appreciated highly by my vegetarian friends (understandable, given the limited options available to them until a few years ago) The following is a glowing review where I have tried to put myself in the shoes of a singularly vegetarian patron.
Ambiance - If you plan to lunch here on a week day, either lose your car or be prepared to wait a long time to be allowed inside the building. The interiors are pleasing and the tables well-laid.
Food : I prefer the south indian meal when I lunch here and feel ravenous. The rice needs a special mention for its texture. It goes perfectly with the sambar, gravies and rasam. The best part of the meal is sambar where the chef is generous with the vegetables. The dosais, rotis and curries do not disappoint. The rasamalai and basundi are pretty good as well.
Pricing : Pricey when you consider the food but value for money if you need to lunch with a client who is vegetarian and are able to bill it to your office account.

I can rate this restaurant as one of the top 3 best veg restaurants in Chennai. Spacious dining place, good for corporate business lunch or dinner or for a family get together. Well experienced waiters know their job very well. Narayana, a long timer as a Waiter is the best. Have tried most south indian varieties - all good.
As soon as u enter this restaurant you would notice the interior, which is full of wood work. I ordered special meal which really very good. I felt good with their meal standard.
Located at the main business area of the city. Great and quality food is served even at the most busiest hours of the week. Baby corn Manchurian is a must try in the starters. The ambience is quite good as it is a old and well established restaurants in Chennai. You need to wait if you go without reservation on Sunday night dinner, but never to disappoint their customers, the hotel offers an open waiting terrace garden which gives a good picture and time flies away. A authentic vegetarian restaurant place to hang out with Family members, we were 4 of us celebrating my inlaws wedding day. We ordered Tomato soup , French onion, Masala papad, Gobi 65 and Baby corn, all were good, since Masala papad, was soggy, hence we asked for a replacement with extra Manga and Spice. we enjoyed it. Then we decided for a complete south indian today, hence ordered Panner & Corn Dosa Masala Dosa and Rava Dosa, it was fantastic, especially the Panner & Corn dosa was awesome, the paste that they use while preparing the dosa was good. we all loved it. We also ordered, Onion utappam which is my al time favorite, taste was excellent, all the chutneys were just brilliant, samabar was mouth watering and we got 3 to 4 cups of sambars, 14 idlies was also good, with ghee and chutney. Over all, the service can be more quicker, with smiles, as I see lot was waiters were just chit chatting and taking in high tones. I will definitely visit this place again and will recommend this to my family and friends. huge parking is available, but quite challenging. We had a good time.

Agreed, authentic vegetarian restaurant which has been prevailing for ages but that's not an excuse for reckless and negligent staff behaviour. It's supremely crowded on the weekends and Friday nights and customers generally are taken for a toss.
Being a true proponent of good food, I cannot neglect the fact that this restaurant serves and have been serving quality food for sometime now. November and December are the best months to occupy the balcony seats. Truly, it has a great view of the mount road and the weather will also be complementing.
I have almost tried everything on the menu and I must admit almost all are really good except for Cutlet and plain naan. Cutlet is just fried dough and naan is an inseparable piece of rug cloth. My favourite is the mushroom pulao and paneer butter masala. The quantity and the spice quotient of the masala is perfect and the paneer butter Masala is a true benchmark.
Normally I don't dine Veg ! But I make an exception for a very few veg restaurants and this is one among those restaurants. However my preference is conditional, I dine only if I'm in a tolerable mood for the waiters in this restaurant. I'm serious, they really get into your nerves which is why I have given this place a 3.5. Beware of the waiters, dough and the table cloth like naan 😄 once your are acquainted of the necessary, rest assured this is a paradise for the veg lovers.
If you dont reserve your table, you are in for a long wait during weekends. It gets very crowded and noisy too. But food is very good.
One of the best vegetarian restaurants I have ever been to. The speciality of this place being they serve jain food. The food is served within a decent time from when you order. Good parking space. Good ambience. Tasty food. They have a good variety in the menu except that they dont have my personal favourite garlic naan for all those garlic lovers.

Mathura can never disappoint you.. My favourite place for dinner for last 15 years.. I still remember the good old days eating on roof top when I was a kid/ open seating on sides of the restaurant.. Which are really priceless even today. My request to Mathura team to open the roof top or side portion once again on a few occasion. Keep it up on maintaining the good old ethnic ambience.. This should be listed as one of the must visit restaurants in Chennai. Simply Classy
One of the most famous places to have vegetarian food in this part of Chennai and its not very easily locatable. You'd have no trouble finding Tarapore if you know how to ride on Mount Road but you may have to enquire the watch man to find which floor the restaurant is in and on how to reach it.
Once you do that , you are guaranteed a good dining experience at great ambience that prevails here. We had ordered few rotis , paneer butter masala and Veg Szechwan fried rice. All tasted great and the service was quite quick too.
When considering the taste and quantity the price might seem a teeny bit over par but if you consider the ambience it does feel it's worth it.
Will definitely visit this place again to try more dishes.
I have spent my childhood days growing up in Triplicane and with my mother having her office in Tarapore towers, we have been frequenting Mathura those days quite a bit. But there was a long gap after we moved to the suburbs. Always wanted to go back and taste the lovely food.
Finally had the opportunity to head out there with my wife for lunch. The restaurant looked the same way as it was during my childhood days. That's a shocker. The decors looked a bit old and in need of renovations. Still there was a certain charm in that old school stuffs. Lots of memories and nostalgia.
Tried out the Ghee Dosais and the Butter Naans/Panneer Butter Masala. Nothing fancy. Just good food.
I would love to take my family here once more to get their nostalgia rekindled as well.
A family favourite for weekend visits. great place with standard food. Been here loads of times they have great service and really good food. the prices though may be a bit high. a great family restaurant.

Went here for dinner with family, their kofta is the best! One of the very nice north Indian cuisines I have had in Chennai. A must go when you are on mount road!
Really prices are low for the quality they give.....best veg hotel in a good ambience ...food receipe are great and meals are good and affordable in Mount road..
Good alternative for Saravana Bhavan, Sangeetha kind of veg restaurant. Had good meal for our lunch. Good Ambience, Service, Cost. Will visit again to try there North Indian & Chinese variety food :)

One of the best Veg Restaurant in Chennai. Very clean and Good Place but have to wait to get a seat that much people will visit daily. I Prefer This Place for Lunch. Meals is Good in taste and Cauliflower Pakoda is so good... Really enjoyed with My family...
Best resturant to hang out with ur family try tomato soup, salad kadai pannier and naan, basanthe, the ambience is good and space for parking ur car is small. Other than tat it's a gud resturant

A place that i have wanted to visit like always...First came to know about this place during my school days when my dad used talk about his official meets here...And i have been pestering him to take me since then...but for some reason or the other situations arise and the plan to visit the outlet kept postponing..And its 13+ yrs to date and finally made to this place with my wife...
Located in the second floor in Tarapore towers..was not easy to find...ASked the watchman there to help me out and he guided me perfectly...The restaurant Entrance seemed like an entrance of an house..opened it and i was welcomed by a typical restaurant look of the 90's...seems like the times i used to visit restaurants with my family...Perfectly lit and cooled...clean and well maintained...to seat around 70 odd ppl...Free and not congested in any way....
The place was filled and the servers were on their feet...when asked for a place to sit..the guys responded politely asked for 2 mins as he was in middle of his order...he promptly came back within a minute and guided us to a recently cleaned table...Quickly we placed the order of Mini Idlis, Sambar vada, Onion Rava, Masala Dosa..were served with a span of 15 odd mins..piping hot and well presented...
Mini Idlies (80rs) : 14 bite sized idlies dipped in one heavenly sambar laden with Ghee..Was pure bliss...Perfect food for a south indian cuisine lover...
Sambar vada (60rs) : The Same heavenly sambar..made this vada even more better...Not only the sambar but the vada was hot..could make it each bite..the ghee content in these items takes the taste to an all new level...
The sambar was just exquisite..The dhall was just perfectly ground and the sambar was perfectly cooked with the garnishing...
Masala Dosa (100rs) : Crispy buttery dosa...perfect one....And the masala was just awesome..the potatoes were perfectly cooked...
Onion Rava Dosai (100rs) : Was a pretty normal one except the taste of ghee i suppose...onion content was just less...
Food here is just awesome...For the items i tried are one of the best i have have in chennai...Service and ambiance is just above average..the ambiance can be improved a bit as in maintenance....The Pricing though seems a bit on the higher side...but a try is definitely recommended...A place i would return to try other items....

Headed to this place after 19 years ......ordered South Indian meals 175 plus tax ( 196 nett ) the time seemed to have stopped since my last visit ......same taste same interiors .......reliving old memories .....must have s are sambhar idly n meals ....but I am still in the quest for the best South Indian thali ( meals ) ...journey continues .............................

Very old regular customer of this restaurant since 20 years. It was nostalgic to visit it once again. Everything is same even the same old rush on sunday.Good to know taste is same but the rate has doubled. I love their rasam vada. Idli is also good. Their molagapdi n idli is ultimate. I love their sambhar. Cheese cutlet is also good. Just feel they shd improve cutlery n ambience.

My one of the favourite restaurant for More then 30 years and it’s famous for its south India food and at very reasonable price food quality is very good and it’s worth going again and again I always have south India meals it’s yummy and it’s had very huge menu from south to north ; Continental Chinese and many more recommended to visit for sure if you are in chennia

The Mathura management, which also runs the New Woodlands Hotel on RK Salai, say the pandemic had forced it to close down Mathura.
(It was a nice vegetarian Air conditioned hotel. Interior design is super with traditional value. It has open space for evening pary.)
Great place , wonderful ambience and the food was also good and talking about service it's the best there's no doubt about it.
Visited this restaurant after almost a decade but was happy to see it the interiors and the taste hasn't changed.

Food is good. Quantity is big so be careful while ordering. The ambience is old, of course it's been three for a long time. Didn't like the smell of mosquito repellent. Service was also good. Can't give five stars as I saw a cockroach that crawled onto the table as we left.
