It's always heartening to visit truly home-run restaurants, as the warmth, hard work and sheer passion for food is truly visible in everything- from the way the menu is designing, the stories behind how it is decorated, the way the servers converse with customers and of course, the beautifully curated food. And this is exactly what you get to see at the Fat Butterfly Bakery and Cafe. A labor of love of a husband-wife duo, this cute little outlet is located at Baani Square, Gurgaon and had a vibrant blue door that immediately draws you in. They do a range of amazing desserts, customized cakes and also have a wonderful, eclectic all day dining menu with some all day breakfast options such as eggs and pancakes.
We started off with a lovely salad that comprised balsamic-marinated beetroot, orange segments, goat’s cheese, caramelized onions, arugula and toasted pine nuts. The salad was so flavorful and fresh and had a lovely amalgamation of different flavors and textures. The goat's cheese was super creamy and was actually made in-house, hence the lovely texture. The arugula leaves were fresh and vibrant and the pine nuts provided a nice crunch. The caramelized onions was a brilliant touch as it provided a lovely jam-like sweetness which counterbalanced the zingy dressing. A salad is all about the quality of its ingredients, and that's where this salad shone. Once of the best salads we've had recently.
Next, we had their Alfredo Pasta, and having had too many flour-y, heavy, gluggy Alfredo pastas, we were a bit sceptical when they recommended this one, but one bite, and the pasta had won us over. The Alfredo sauce, unlike most places, had no aftertaste of maida, and was lovely and creamy and loaded with cheese. They've used really good quality parmesan in this sauce, and the flavor and texture were spot-on. The delicate sauce had penne cooked al dente, along with some broccoli and mushrooms, garnished with parsley for some freshness. The pasta was served with a delicious spice of country loaf coated with garlic butter.
We also had their Grilled Harissa Spiced Cottage Cheese Focaccia, which had a soft fresh focaccia bread that was nicely topped with oregano spice. The bread was stuffed with charred corn, roasted peppers, cheddar and soft cottage cheese coated with harissa spice to make it nice and spicy.
For mains, we went with the Spinach and Corn Stuffed Chicken. This hearty plate of food consisted of a juicy chicken breast stuffed with spinach, mushrooms, sweet corn, mascarpone cheese and cheddar, grilled to perfection. The spinach in the filling was still vibrant and green and had not been overcooked to mush, which apart from providing a nice flavor, also gave the dish a nice textural dimension. The chicken was topped with a delicious pepper mushroom sauce, which was wonderfully balanced in flavor, and that freshly cracked pepper always does give any dish great flavor. The chicken was served with creamy mash, grilled veg and garlic bread. The mashed potatoes again were nicely executed, and were light and fluffy.
We enjoyed all this food with a refreshing Mint Lemonade and a thick and creamy Blueberry Cheesecake Shake. They try to make things in-house, as far as possible, and even the blueberry compote in the shake didn't come out of a jar, but was made fresh, and mixed along with their cheesecake to make this tasty shake, which was just adequately sweet.
And of course, we couldn't have gone without dessert so we tried three of their most popular ones- the Classic Baked Cheesecake, Tiramisu and Flourless Chocolate Cake.
The Tiramisu was perfectly balanced in terms of sweetness and liquor. They had soaked their sponge in old monk to give it a nice punch, that counterbalanced the mascarpone well, and the coffee flavor was front and center.
Their Classic Baked Cheesecake was again one of the best we've had. The texture was perfect- nice buttery, crunchy almond base topped with a creamy layer of cheesecake that was rich, yet not heavy. They stay clear of shortcuts like using gelatine to set the cream cheese, which results in a smooth, creamy texture and not a heavy-set one.
And the Flourless Chocolate Cake Slice with Raspberry Coulis is just heaven for all chocolate lovers. This cake consists of really good quality dark chocolate and was so rich, creamy and decadent. The richness of the chocolate was balanced well with the tart raspberry coulis, which was made in-house and was really tasty on its own. It would be a crime to miss out on this dessert.
Overall, this place is doing some really tasty food using the best of ingredients. The owners are two of the sweetest, most welcoming people we've met and their passion and dedication for this cafe is what makes it work so well. A must-visit place at Baani Square!
