My earliest memory of a breakfast biriyani was at my in laws place 11 years before. As a new member to the family (I was newly wedded then), my father in law treated to the family tradition of a flavourful Biriyani from a neighbourhood outlet called Pandias. Which probably is the only place in Chennai (even now, after 11 years) serving Biriyani for breakfast, with a special serving of turkey Biriyani on Sundays & Wednesdays. Even today, I make it a point to plan my visits to my In laws, either on Sundays or Wednesdays, for a reason.
That aside, the case in point here is about the Hoskote Breakfast Biriyani which is so famous, that people travel insane distances to get a taste of Mutton Dum Biriyani & Leg Soup.
I have been planing to pay a visit to Anand Dum Biriyani, for almost a year now. I have heard horrid stories of huge lines, biriyani getting over before 8, hungry disappointed people crying to reach as early as 6.30 AM, the next time, made me procrastinate to avoid the sheer feeling of disappointment.
But with more recent posts, in various foodie groups, my temptation grew stronger and I decided to tread the dangerous path of Biriyani for Breakfast.
With a determination to sleep early and decision to have backup alarms for 5.30, today, a fine Sunday Morning, at 6.20, I kickstarted my trip to Anand Dum Biriyani @ Hoskote.
From my home, it was at a 15km distance, which is not bad, as I have travelled even greater distances for food. A quick 30 minute drive past the toll, took me to this bustling little place in the sleepy part of Bangalore, at around 6.50 AM.
After a quick glance through, I realised what is what and where is what. Without wasting any time, and the great fear lurking within, of going back without a box of Biriyani. I took tokens for everything they had to offer for the day. The menu isn't vast and is fairly straightforward, Mutton Biriyani, Leg Soup Paaya, & Chicken Fry. I took 2 Biriyanis, 1 Chicken fry & a Paaya soup. While it was easy peasy to get all the dishes quickly packed, the chicken took time to arrive from the kitchen elsewhere and that made me wait for almost 15 mins.
The plan was to bring everything home and eat breakfast as a family. However the aroma was too tempting, that I had to cheat and savour a little bit of the Biriyani on my way.
After the seemingly, long ride home to a eager family to savour this delicious biriyani, it all ended very quickly.
The hungry bunch attacked the biriyani, chicken fry and not so much of the soup, rested only after the platter was flatter.
Quick Verdict, one of the best Biriyani's that I have tasted, with the flavours of mutton emerging quiet strongly, bite after bite. Portions were decent with large chunks of mutton with & without bones.
The chicken fry was more like a semi gravy, with decent pieces with hardly any bones. The strong ginger flavours dominated this wonderful accompaniment to the Biriyani. At Rs. 80 a portion, its a steal. The soup was very flavoursome, again strong mutton flavours, liked it, but did not love it, unfortunately.
Easily one of the best in Bangalore, though not one of the top, primarily because of the large chunks of fat attached to the mutton pieces, same was the case with the chicken. That was kind of off-putting for someone who doesn't like visible signs of fat in their meat.
A great place to experience a wonderful vibe of foodies queuing up for a breakfast biriyani, a must try for any foodie who loves their Biriyani. It is a great place to experience & savour good, decent food, worth the long drive, at least once.
