Simply South was one of the rare occasions, where my parents were more keen than me to visit the place. Ended up outperforming and exceeding everyone's expectations so much, that we happened to make 2 visits in the same month! This is a combined review for both experiences. 😊❤️
Coincidentally, both visits being on Sunday afternoons, the place was full. It didn't take too long for us to get our table in what looked like a really upmarket yet simplistically done dining hall. Something you would expect in a family home, just upscaled in size. Dark brown wood, light shaded floor tiles, some dim and warm lighting from chandeliers provides a very homely and soothing feel. There are a few paintings and wall hangings.
For food, what we were looking forward to the most, we had:
🍴 MAKKA JONNA GARELU (259/8) - Crispy corn wadas. The crispness was on point, without any excessive oil dripping. It was moderately spicy, and went well with the excellent coconut chutney served alongside. Recommended. 💚
🍴 TELANGANA KODI ROAST (309) - Boneless batter coated chicken sauteed in Telangana spices. Lots of green chilly, curry leaves, garlic and cumin. Loved the flavor, but the chicken, not so much. The coating was lose and chicken pieces itself were quite small and less in number.
🍴 OORU KODI VEPUDU (329) - After long something actually tasted like authentic chicken, unadulterated. However, the pieces had very less meat and were mostly all bone. Serving size was again too small on top of the low meat:bone ratio. It was spicy and tangy, with great flavors.
The starters had great flavor and taste, however, the chicken pieces weren't all that good and serving sizes were too little.
For main course, we had:
🍴 BENDAKAYA VEPUDU (269) - Crispy fried Okra/Ladies Finger with typical tanginess from South Indian spices. Curry leaves, chilli, onions, Dal, and slight hints of coconut. Loved it. Recommend. 💚
🍴 BAGARA BAINGAN (269) - This is that dish present in every Hyderabadi wedding or function, but sadly overlooked. The curry here was quick thick and slightly sour, with a creamy and nutty texture and flavors of groundnut and curry leaves. The baby eggplants were soft and plump. Recommended. 💚
🍴 NATHU KODI PULUSU (429) - The classic, it literally translates to Country Chicken Curry, and the taste was great! Tender chicken with perfect flavor and spice, in a spicy and tangy gravy. Great with rice!
🍴 CHICKEN CHETTINAD (369) - Another classic. I always knew chettinad as the spiciest curry ever, with a thick and coarse textured gravy. Presentation wise, it wasn't quite there, with a light and runny gravy, but was as spicy as could be. Absolutely loved it and the chicken pieces were just OMG soft and perfectly cooked. Would go well with anything. Recommended. ❤️
🍴 ROYALA EGURU (479) - Prawns in a spicy, sour and thick paste/gravy. While I loved every bit of this, it had too much of salt. By too much, I really do mean too much. Probably as much as 3 portions of this curry would need. I would prefer this curry with Roti/Chapati/Parantha/Appam and not rice owing to it's dry nature. Recommended if salt can be reduced. ❤️
🍴 PALAKOORA PAPPU (269) - Another classic, a spinach and lentil stew commonly known as Dal Palak. Great flavors, and good quantity. Could've taken a bit more spinach. Recommended with rice. 💚
Going along with all the delicious mains, we found PLAIN RICE (89) to be the perfect accompaniment. It is served piping hot from their huge container where it is stored after being cooked. There is a double portion too for 180 but I felt 2 single portions to be better than a double one.
🍴 APPAM (109) - 2 dome shaped dosas as I call it, isn't really a dosa though. Soft and delicate, I had it with the prawns curry and it was fine.
At the table, lots of condiments and accompaniments are served, to make it a wholesome and complete package of flavor. White rice is served with in-house made Ghee, and 4 different types of Podi (powder) and Chutneys. My favorite of these have to be the heavenly Tomato Pachdi (Tomato Chutney) and Palli Podi (Peanut Powder) that is added in rice. You can also buy the Podi here. 💚😋
To top it all off, there is an endless supply of Papad of 2 kinds, a thicker 'khajla' rice papad, and the other one the classic thin one. Personally, I love having the thin papad with palli Podi and tomato chutney. So much so, that the server had to put a stop on the papads to our table 😂. The papads are served with a crispy salt cured dried red chilli, that has a weird very fishy, sea salty kind of taste.
The service is quick and professional, and the captains exhibit great knowledge about each dish, which I must appreciate. They are quick on their toes to serve however something needs to be done about the speed of Papad and chutneys service. It takes ages. 😭
The only thing holding me back from giving Simply South a 5 star is the prices. The vegetarian items are just fine, but the non-veg is just too exorbitant. Wouldn't be a problem if they pieces contained more meat or serving sizes were larger. Accompaniments maybe with the exception of rice I felt to be overpriced too. Zomato Gold/ Dineout GP were our saviors. 🤑💯
The first visit cost about 1500 for 3 (1100 for 3 with Zomato Gold), while the second set us back by about 2200 for 5 (1050 for 5 with Dineout GP😱). Hell of a deal. Along those lines, a meal for 4 should cost you around 1600-2000 but me being a North Indian, I feel it's a unique and different dining experience that's worth it overall. 😃
To summarize, Simply South and Chef Chalapathi Rao have struck the right balance between authenticity and taste, providing a diverse menu from South Indian that'll cater to everyone. 👌🏻
This has the negative effect of tastes being suppressed to cater to the wider lot. The items are not too spicy (chilli spice) as someone would come to expect. They also need to work on being consistent with their salt levels as I found everything to be just too damn salty on my first visit. 😖
I would recommend this place especially to North Indians/people who haven't tried out South Indian food not only for the cuisine, but also for the simplistic and minimalistic dining experience, I'm sure you'll be amazed by it. An open mind is all it takes. 😊
Some of the items I would recommend:
💚 MAKKA JONNA GARELU
💚 BENDAKAYA VEPUDU/ BAGARA BAINGAN for curries
💚 PALAKOORA PAPPU
❤️ CHICKEN CHETTINAD
❤️ ROYALA EGURU (minus the salt)
Here's my overall SCORE:
Food - 4.5/5 (Salt consistency, more Meat and less Bone)
Ambience - 4/5
Service - 4/5 (get those Papads quicker!)
VFM - 3.5/5 (be prepared to get ripped off if you done have ZG or Dineout GP memberships)
