Sumptuous lunch - Kerala cuisine
Grand Hotel is known for its food for long years now. Though, all the food on the menu is real tasty, we have taken a liking for the Fish Meals, available during lunch hours. The taste is absolutely amazing - the fish curry, the other curries, sambar, chutnies, even the pappad. We always look forward to a lunch at Grand, whenever we visit Ernakulam
One of the best restaurant at cochin anyone can vouch for .their fish curry meals is just amaxing..not to forget the kachiyamoru and rasam seeves alongwith..try their ammachi special fish...you woupdnt regret
The food here is excellent. Traditional Kerala food served here are fresh and authentic. There are a variety of Chinese and other foreign dishes. The ambience of the restaurant is good.
Very nice place... Good food at Affordable price. Always a crowdy place but that does not affect the time they bring your order... Been here many times... The warm water they serve is very good for your health .
Awesome Ambience..Went there with a mixed bag of reviews and they didn't let me down. I was on hunt for authentic southern spice and this is place. Well I stick to steam rice and prawn mango curry (check actual item on menu).. Lip smacking taste.. Tangy and mild spicy.. Taste that will push me to visit again. Good job guys, keep up your repo!!
If someone reads my reviews, would know, 5 STAR is big a rating from me. I want to be honest to my followers, thats why I try my best to be honest with my ratings too.
This place just took me by my heart.
I had ordered plain rice, king fish curry, appams, karimeen pollichatha, and rum with warm water.
One can argue that being next to the sea having the freshest of the fish is not a big deal, Okay, I agree, but the balance of spice n taste is to the perfection.
Karimeen Polichatha is fish marinated with keralite spices and then steamed, wrapped in banana leaf. Bengali's call this "Bhape", and Paris's call this "Patrani".
Once you have been treated to this amazing food, by really efficient staff you get mesmerized by the old colonial decor and style.
For me, this place is a 5/5 for food, 5/5 for service and 5/5 for ambience.
thank you.
One of my favorite restaurants in the city. They've been consistent for years! I like pretty much everything I've tried. They serve really good fish.
The Grand Hotel Restaurant does not disappoint and IS THE definitive place to visit for authentic Kerala cuisine. and I confidently say that you can't go wrong eating here.
I had written a review three and a half years ago on another forum called 'Consistently Great Eating' and I'm thrilled to say, 'I told you so'!!!!
Nothing has changed. The restaurant is still busy as ever and the food is still delicious and wholesome.
If you want to sample the local cuisine, you can't go wrong ordering the fish curry meals which will give you 4 -5 vegetable dishes, a fish curry, pappadom, assorted pickles and unlimited rice. The vegetable dishes will also be refilled if you so require at no extra cost.
Another must try dish is the 'Karimeen Pollichathu' which is a local fish (Pearl Spot) sauteed in local spices and masala, and then baked in a banana leaf. Fabulous.
The restaurant also serves varieties of biriyani cooked and served in clay pots (Dum Biriyani) and is easily the best available in the city.
Their menu is extravagant and they serve chicken, fish, lamb, beef, lobster and duck to name a few. Every week they have a speciality going - could be Duck, lobster or tiger prawns so do ask.
The only drawback I can point out is that the service level tends to vary from average to very good depending on the crowd, and it does tend to get very very busy.
Do your palate a favor and eat here!!!
This place is situated just beside MG road. I love the overall ambience of this place. I had come here for lunch and had ordered the chicken and mutton dum Biryani. The service may be slightly slow as this place is almost packed most of the time. The biryani tasted good with genuine quantity of meat. Overall this place has great food and it's worth visiting if you are around Kochi.
My second visit here, the ambiance is a lively, spacious pleasant one with only the basic decor. Great place to entertain a your guests.
The food here is known to be very very good. They are multi cuisine and have a huge variety of food to choose from. But for a non-local like me, a South Indian fare was all I had on my mind.
We ordered Beef and Chicken preparations and they were delicious. We relished every bit of our food.
They make some really good mint lime here, so if you are a teetotaler or aren't in the mood for alcohol, you must try this drink.
The cost of food is on the higher side but totally worth it for the quality, service and the ambiance.
Been here when I was in Kochi last month.Food was good and tasty.Fish curry and Chicken curry was spicy and tasty.Staff among the higher ranks were disciplined. There was a mishap in handling of bill.It wasnt until the senior staff intervened that it got resolved.
It would be sacrilege when someone visits Kochi (Cochin) and skips the fish delicacy Karimeen Pollichatu.
On my last visit had tried the Shallow Fried version and had really liked it. But this time around, tried the mixed version which was highly recommended.
This was the version where the fish is first lightly shallow fried and then steamed wrapped in the banana leaf. Coated in a tomato based tangy gravy, it really was a lip smacking taste. Must try dish.
Also tried the Chilli Fish which derives all its fire from the local spices. No sauces were used and yet it was decently fiery. The Kadi Pata, the garlic chunks, the Black pepper and the whole red peppers gave it the distinctive Kerala flavour.
All in all, an awesome dinner.
If you want great South Indian food in Kochi, then this is one of the place to go to. Great food for non-veg lovers. Add to it, there is a wide variety of liquor to go along with it. Would highly recommend the chicken Chettinad roast and appams.
Traditional restaurnt with modern touches
•veg n non vg meals superb
• bangkok friedrice is good bt a little too spicy
•chicken 65 -good
•chappatis -good
•paneer butter masala -ok
Place was clean, service was fast, and the food was good. We loved the crispy honey chicken starter, and the cold coffee with ice cream was spot on. The mutton biriyani was meh, as it could have used a smidge more salt. For dessert, my daughter got the creme caramel (flan), which she didn’t like, while I got the red velvet cake, which was ok, but didn’t have the traditional “red velvet” taste. Instead, it was more like it had a hint of raspberry purée flavor, so I’m not sure what happened with that. It was still good though. Service was attentive but not overbearing, and everything was prompt. Would definitely try this place again.
I went to this restaurant on a Republic Day and it is crowded. The ambience is good.. you get the cozy feel inside the restaurant. I ordered the traditional food and it is really yummy. I can feel the authentic flavour of the state.. I recommend fish mouli and appam, the best food. Everyone was ordering calamari rings and so do us. Price is okaish, slighter on the expensive side.
Food served was excellent! The ambience is also quite nice with plush interiors. I liked beef fry and prawn the most. Tried their Karimeen Pollichyathu. It was okay.
The place is classy, old and amazing! The food is a delicious spread and very economical and amazingly yummy! A must go when in #Kochi
🔥🔥🔥!!!
Food was amazing , staff was polite and very nice. We loved Kerala cuisine,it was fantastic.
Biryani was delicious. People must try prawn fry and squid fry .
We had dinner with colleagues . We had parathas with veg curry and good mix of fish dishes. Kerala paratha was really soft and good. Garlic paste served with it was really yummy.we thoroughly enjoyed the food there. Good place to visit for non vegetarian food especially for fish varieties
I have been here a few times and One of the must visit place for seafood lovers in Kochin . They serve wide variety of seafood food, focusing on Kerala traditional style . But from my past couple of visits I can say the quality of the food is changed,Nothing exceptional. I ordered fish curry and it disappointed me. The Kerala parottas are a star. I love the parotta from here,so soft and fluffy 😍😍. Pork fry was also delicious.
The chocolate cake for desert was just DIVINE! The beef steaks are amazing!! 😍
The quality provided and ambience is good. The quality has been maintained for years! The plus point is if u wanna have a beer with lunch or dinner; you can!!
Do not order nan and paneer butter masala, it was horrible!!😔☹️

When it comes to Karimeen Pollichathu, it has to be Grand. I still wonder how they keep up the standards inspite of the heavy rush. Excellent place, awesome ambience and super duper food. If one visit Kerala, don't miss this place. They serve all cuisines but they Kerala type food is just out of the world.
The place is huge with good ambience. It is usually heavily crowded and may require you to reserve table upfront. Food is pretty good but the cost as expected is on the higher side. I went with my infant and the manager quickly offered the cradle. Service staff is sensible and accommodative.

Delighted and excited to visit this place with my colleagues in Kochi which is more than 50 years old.the fish curry and fish polichathu are good .but the ultimate dish is prawn and minced fish pickle which i enjoyed a lot.Must visit place with family for all tourists
Appam & Stew
( The simple and elegant traditional breakfast that is available at kochi. You get breads , cornflakes, drinks, omelette, appam, stew, poori, masala curry, chicken sausages, potato wedges and fruits and cakes. The best nadan style appam and veg stew is so sooo yum and feels like not stopping it. So do try the breakfast at Hotrl Grand Kochi. But the no of dishes can be improved.)

Grand Hotel always serves Kerala cuisines at its best. I love there fish curry meals , which is accompanied Lot of other dishes. All tastes so good, especially fish thoran and dried prawns chutney. Also the breakfast appam and vegetable stew is excellent.
Whatta place !! Whatta delightful selection and tasty set of dishes!! And my, what a wonderful couple of nights we had dining there- with Kerala menu being the highlight. The restaurant itself is sparsely designed, in a decidedly old world setting, with stiff back chairs and high tables, in creamish yellow coloured decor, and the service is okayishly fast and efficient.
The highlight is therefore the food itself- especially the local dishes, which are lip-smackingly and finger licking yummy. We ordered Kerala Parottas and rice, with grilled fish slices with masala wrapped in banana leaves, mutton curry with coconut flakes and Beef curry in coconut paste, alongwith coupla beers from the bar.
Kerala parottas were nicely cooked, and we really gorged on the beef curry and mutton- but the grilled fish slices were the winner, hands down.
Really nice evening of good Kerala food ensured that we were back in the same restaurant the next evening.
It is not just a Hotel it is Food Paradise. A visit could be cherished and remembered for a long time. The Ambience of the hotel is really amazing. The food is really awesome and heart wrenching.
It was a celebration form our office after a hectic Tax Audit season. Waiting for another occasion to visit again. Will be there soon.
One of the popular destination and a good find being a tourist. Excellent food preparations and had one of the best biryani which is their specialty.
As it’s a popular destination, better to give some time for serving and getting a table.
Had been once to this place for lunch. ..very crowded and quite noisy...but I really loved their oriental spread ...what I noticed in the whole restaurant is that everyone was ordering the seafood dishes cooked in the traditional way which proved one thing that they really do well in their traditional food too ....keeping it in my bucket list for my next visit.
All the traditional food with Nice and cozy ambience .. biriyani is really good .. normally if you wanna take ur girlfriend to a bar or a pub it’s highly frowned upon in kochi .. grand serve you liquor in the restaurant and nobody is judging you .. that’s the best thing I see in GRAND . U CAN BE YOURSELF ... and some of the best cuisines I tried - THARAVU CURRY , APPAM STEW, KARIMEEN POLLICHATHU, MEALS , BIRIYANI ... slightly over priced but worth it
We tried allepey fish curry, Ammachis kozhi roast, wheat paratha, fish fry and grandma's chicken. Each and every item was simply awesome. Especially, the wheat paratha and kozhi roast...
Good ambience and food. However, lots of scope for improvement in food and quality ingredients like Good quality basmati rice for biryani than regular rice.
I should say one of the top restaurants in town where you can visit when your taste buds urge for some seafood especially the karimeen polichathu and alleppy fish curry.A place with really good ambience and yummyiest food.
Its a good place but is a bit expensive.. Friendly staff.. A must try - karimeen fish! Just out of the world!
It is usually crowded.. I went there at around 3.30 and i almost got the whole place for myself :)
'Since 1963' and yes they have kept their name high till now. The interiors decorated with paper crafts welcomes everyone to this enchanting place. Their naadan cuisines are way too wonderful. I tried out their white fluffy appam with mango fish curry and it was just yummy.
An all time favourite for our traditional cuisine. Karimeen pollichathu and beef fry are great here. Lunch time is usually crowded. Also they have a pretty nice bar couchyn which is also recommended.
Highly recommended.
The main advantage here is food. The food will feel like homely food. We feel like eating more, though I would not call it very tasty. Disadvantages are bit costly and there is a very long waiting to get a seat allocated (for lunch). The waiting place also very crowded, and nobody cares. When you are not dedicated to waiting you may return after seeing the crowd.
A really good place with a good ambience. The sea good here is absolutely amazing. I just have tried the karimeen here and that's when i started loving it.
I have been going here with my parents since I was a kid. They still serve the best meals in town. I just love their fish fry and curry. The food here has a special feel to it. The ambience is also appreciable.
An iconic hotel situated in mg road . One of the oldest and no wonder you may have to wait minimum 60 minutes for a seat to be allocated during lunch ..variety of cuisine .. must try the sea food as well as the meals..... if u r visiting during afternoon..
A must visit place with family.. great ambiance and great food too.. their authentic kerala food is yummy.. i have always seen this place filled with people and all having good time
We ordered prawn fried rice, squid bell pepper fry, porotta, beef roast, mocha caramel and tiramisu.
Prawn fried rice : Nothing great.
Squid Bell Pepper fry : Squid and Bell pepper being my favorites, I was quite confident that this was going to be my favorite dish of the day. Thought I couldn't find any Bell Pepper in the dish, we still loved this.
Porotta : Soft and a bit Crispy :D
Beef roast : Thought not the best one I've had from a hotel, this one was perfect with the Porotta we'd ordered.
Mocha Caramel : Yummy enough to satisfy caramel custard lovers.
Tiramisu : This one disappointed me a little. Though it had the coffee flavor, it couldn't please the tiramisu lover in me.
Quantity wise, the prawn fried rice was sufficient for me and my Mom. So it is advisable to order half the things first to avoid wastage. But if you are confident enough, please go ahead :D
Overall we had a pleasant dining experience :D
Luxury at its best. The service, food, taste, ambience is extra ordinary and very fairly priced. The place is crowded all the time. The food here has always been good. This is one of the oldest places in kochi.
Our last night in Kochi called for a feast of authentic Kerala food. To that end, we chose the well regarded Grand Hotel Restaurant for dinner. As tourists, we were pleased to see a spotless, bustling dining room filled mostly with local families savoring special occasion meals. The staff was helpful in navigating the huge menu and service generally was great. Both our mutton and chicken curries were excellent. Big portions with authentic flavors and fall off the bone meats. The accompanying appam and Kerala parathas we ordered tastes great as well. We found the prices quite reasonable for the quality and quantity as tourists. The restaurant isn't the place to go for a quick lunch or a light meal, but to sample a wide selection of amazing Kerala food in an upscale, hygenic atmosphere Grand Hotel is a no brainier.
Had lunch at the hotel. Make sure you reach at 12:00 noon. The restaurant was full by 13:30 hrs.
Beef stroganoff served with rice was very good.
French fries not upto the mark.
Ammachi chicken roast was good with porotta.
And to top it all the sumptuous fig and honey ice-cream was a real delight.
The bill (sans the beer) came to around 1500 for 3 which was pocket friendly too.

My experience came in the form of a official visit to Kochi. The place was very nice. The food and the staff were also nice. The south indian food was really good and a couple of the dishes really exceeded expectations. I really enjoyed the prawns and fish preparation.
i miss you so much.. we used to go there often in the past.. a few yrs before.. with family that was my favorite time.. nd it was the best place.. the food was just awesome nd the ambience is also pleasing.. we always eat the prawns biriyani frim there and the soup as a starter😍.. then we wud either gonfor pudding or some choice of icecream.. i am so much in love with the place😍😍😍🐷
On reviews it was made out to be something iconic and epic, hate to say this, it did not live up to that but is still a very good place to eat. A large hall with grand lights does give you the feeling of grandness so definitely above average. Food choices are good and the fish I ordered was excellent. The alcohol is limited to Indian makes. Service was also good. The one thing I was super disappointed was the desert- ordered the Panna Cotta- wasn’t even close, where was the gelatin and the fresh fruit garnish? All I tasted was custard cream in a sad little glass.
Best food available in region. Decent ambience. Fresh and tasty kerala food. Small negative is that it is a bit crowded most times. So if you are a privacy seeker you might feel a bit uncomfortable .
Super crowded most of the time!
The food tastes pretty decent but the food you ordered will take awhile to reach your table, due to the crowd mentioned earlier!
Worth the wait though!
One of my favorite places in cochin. Love their biriyani. The sizzler is also nice. A bit expensive but the quantity and quality make up for it. The service is good. Classy place. Can be loud when the place is full
Good fish curry meals. They serve alcohol as well.
True to its name, "Grand hotel" does look grand from the exterior which makes it impossible to miss if you pass through MG road. This place is mostly crowded but we didnt have to wait when we had been there twice. The staff is very attentive and polite. Coming to their food.. i have tried their vegeterian meal and karimeen polichathu.. the food was fresh and tasty!! Its a nice place to try authentic keralite cuisine.
It’s must go place . Very nice food . Snacks , biryani , main course ...whatever u order , it’s good . Fish dishes are must try . You can go here with family or friends , they will love it ..
Had American Chopsey, chicken biriyani, fish biriyani and fried rice. The order is in decreasing taste.
American Chopsey was one of the best I had. Had crispy noodles and egg bulls eye in one bowl. The other bowl has thick sauce with large fresh pieces of chicken with large number of meat pieces and mushroom. The amount was more than enough for one person.
The chicken biriyani came with three pieces of chicken, was adequately spicy and had egg also.
The fish biriyani and fried rice were OK.
Amazing food. Great ambience. Friendly and helpful staff. They take great care of the customers inspite of the crowd. Do reserve seats if you are going during the peak time.
Loved this place.. Visited with cousins today.. Food was awesome.. 🍚😻🍱🍴🍚😻🍱🍚🍴🍰🍽🥄🍗🦈🐔👨👩👧👦👨👩👧👶🏻👶🏻👧🏻👧🏻👧🏻😍😍😇
Almost everyone whom I met in Kochi told me this is the place to go if I want to try authentic malabari cuisine. So on my way airport I decided to halt here.
First things. This place is popular. So. Do not expect even on working day to get a place without waiting time. The waiter seemed to be curt initially. But later, I found very courteous and adorable in their own way.
Based on their recommendations and our research we tried the following :-
Karimeen polichattu :- A famous fish cooked in tangy spicy curry and seemed in a banana leaf. Having it with parotha was heavenly. It was dohe just right and not too spicy.
Prawns curry :- reminds of in laws from mangalore and their preparation in coconut milk. It was sumptuous with appam and parotha.
Dessert :- to close a satisfying meal we ordered a payasam which was very good and caramel custard which was also at par with ones back hone in mumbai.
I cant recall another restaurant with as varied a menu as this place. It would take 10 visits to taste the kerala cuisine alone let alone rest of the menu.
Very nice food , enjoyed the tasty food. I recommend people to visit this place if you are passing through MG Road , Kochi. There will be a waiting time , but worth waiting!!!
My visit to Kochi is incomplete without a stop at Grand. It's one of the oldest places here and has been very consistent in maintaining their standard over the years.
The place is always crowded, so be prepared to wait for a while before you manage to get a seat.
They serve traditional Kerala 'naadan' stuff. If you are a non-vegetarian you will simply fall in love with this place. Do try out their meals too in one of your visits. Their Caramel pudding is by far the best in town. Once you have had a 'Grand' experience, you will surely keep coming back for more !
We always visit Grand Hotel at least once during our stay at Cochin. They have got the best fish curry meals in town and a very good ambience. I also order the karimeen polichathu and beef ularthiyathu from here. It’s a guaranteed to taste good place.
Very reasonably priced, bursting with guests at lunchtime, yet ensuring super efficient and accurate service, Grand Hotel Restaurant is a must visit. Shoot for the Pollichathu with Appam, Beef Curry with steamed rice and savour the simple, home cooked taste that fills you with gratification. Cost for a couple approx Rs. 800.
Location:center of city
Ambiance : great
The way they arrange the table is arranged could be improved.the food is awesome. Must try the local cuisine and If you love biriyani.. Try the dum biriyani. The continental food HERE is one of the best in the city.
After looking through the Internet for the best Karimeen Pollichathu, one name kept popping up - The Grand Pavilion, Kochi.
So we decided to try and see for ourselves the "Legendary" Pollichathu. And to my amazement it, sure did not disappoint.
The Karimeen Pollichathu was phenomenal, amazing and extremely flavourful. A perfect blend of heat (spiciness), tangy-ness and coconut (because what dish in Kerala is complete with Coconut?). The Fish was fresh, cooked to perfection and flaked off when forked. Pollichathu is an absolute must if you visit the Grand Pavilion or even Kochi for that matter.
The Seer Fish Curry was made in the traditional Kerala style with a Coconut gravy. I enjoyed it, even though the fish was a tad bit overcooked.
The Squid was a spicy affair, for someone who handles spicy food reasonably well, I sure had a little difficulty here. Yet, the Squid was cooked just right and was not stringy and hard. This sure had slices of coconut, which I've now grown accustomed and fond off.
And most definitely Red Rice, it would have been sacrilegious to even think of ordering Basmati Rice in Kerala. We wouldn't do that to you, Kerala, most definitely not.
The restaurant is bustling during the afternoon, going into the early part of the evening. The Staff are courteous. However, the Servers, despite being courteous, could do with some training.
The ambience is alright, nothing which stands out. It definitely could be an area where it needs work. Though, I wouldn't care too much about that, the main prize (the food, mainly, the Pollichathu ) is far too good.
It would be highly unwise to give this place a miss. Highly recommended for an insight into the Traditional Cuisine in this part of Kerala.
An excellent restaurant in Kochi known for its superb Kerala cuisine. Clean, spacious, and with friendly staff, though it can be busy. The diverse menu offers a rich and spicy mix of nutritious food. Highly recommended for a great non-vegetarian experience. Don't miss trying their biryani and mutton – both delightful!
Great restaurant with good service. Have visited a few times. The restaurant has a great ambience and is spacious. There is lots of parking in the compound as well.
The restaurant is clean and well maintained.
Good variety of food options. There are lots of vegetarian options. The food consistently tastes good.
Recommended to visit in and around MG Road.
Good hotel with a lot of menu options of all sort of foodies. Good parking space and lot of space to dine in.
Friendly staff who loves to cater everyone equally
Excellent restaurant. We always make it a point to have lunch here when we visit kochi. Good service. Clean place. Spacious. Can get busy and have to wait but worth the wait. Good selection of food. Definitely recommend this place to anyone.
Had veg meals with their special grand chicken fry and beef fry. Meals chicken and beef was very good. Chicken fry masala was also very tasty. There is a waiting period of minimum 15 minutes after ordering the food. Good ambience. Staff service is also good.
Absolutely fantastic as always - some places just have this magic. My last visit for 14 years back had the fish meals & karimeen politche was brilliant the & now still the same tasty food and experience. The fish Biryani was very special. Anyone visiting Cochin - Must-have a meal.
Awesome food since it's a good place to dine in the heart of the city expect a little wait time but the wait is worth it as you will be served Hot Tasty Food with a smile by the amazing staff. Really tasty food. Veg and Non veg options are great. Must try when you are in Cochin

The wait time is too much. But, the food is delicious. Staff is courteous.
Nice place to visit with family and friends.
A part of the Grand Hotel on M.G. road in Kochi, this restaurant serves delicious food. The portions are very good and the service is great too. The menu offers a wide range of dishes including local kerala food and North Indian, continental & Chinese fare. The price is on the higher side, but it’s worth the experience.
