A little gem situated in fort kochi. Absolutely love their flaky parathas.
My favourite: the Awadhi samosa paratha which is so huge that it can actually fill 5-6 people..
Small and cozy joint with great food to satisfy the foodie in you! Their stuffed parathas and rolls are a must try. You will not be disappointed.
Dal Roti serves the best North Indian food in fort kochi with a twist. Back when I was in fort kochi it was the first restaurant which suggested to me by so many people. So, I thought let's give it a try and explore the place. Surely, it didn't disappoint me infact I had my one meal of the day there till I stayed. The owner was very welcoming and he assure that his customers are happy.
What I ordered?
I ordered chicken thali and it was enough for two people.
I also ordered Kathi roll once and it was delicious 😋
My reviews:
Worth going: yes
Food overpriced: no not at all
Ambience: It was welcoming and clean. It is established in a old Kerala house so it is not like some decorated cafe.
Service: Quick
Food: Mouth watering if you like North Indian cuisines.
Note: keep cash with you as they don't accept card.

The KatiRolls of DalRoti is definitely a must try if you are going to Fortkochi to have a bite. The crunchy porotta filled with juicy prawns all the way, along with sliced onions, which again adds to the crunchiness when you bite is a superb combination! 👌🏻👌🏻
Dal roti has always been my go to go place on weekends . The kati rolls have always been my favourite . I love the quality it offers , filled up with a good amount of paneer/egg/chicken . It’s gradually makes you full for the day . Compared to before the quality and quality has reduced , hope the standard becomes better . But love the place ! If you are going to fort kochi , this is the place for food Indian cuisine .
Dal roti its relate you of your home made delicious food. We went for dinner we ordered veg kathi roll, mashala tea, deshi thali - that was really so big and awesome desi look. After dinner we ordered mashala tea it was really tasty.
Service was good and staffs was really helpful bz if u belong form north india or u dont have knowledge of local language they will sarve u as well ur choice and they also understand hindi very well.
Overall it was good experience with dal roti
I was expecting good food polite and professional service because of the goodwill and positive word of mouth and the restaurant proved it all right
Amazing food
To add your dinning experience the owner is really respectful and smiling
Will surely return again
Be it kati rolls or mughlai parathas, its all worth the money. The service is really fast and smooth.
The ambience is definitely worth a whole page. Its very welcoming and very clean.
Definitely recommended.
In our 3 day - 2 night trip to Kochi, we went to this place both nights for dinner! The place was a perfect go-to after a day full of activity with it's welcoming and full of warmth atmosphere and warm homely food.
Food-
Both nights, we had roti with curries like dal and paneer butter masala. But the beauty of the place was that the food looked and tasted like it was home cooked.
It gave my friends and I both a lovely happy warm feeling in our tummies and made us feel right at home. :)
Service-
The service was fast and smooth considering the number of customers they always had.
Ambience-
As I mentioned before, the atmosphere is very welcoming.
The restaurant is situated in an old Kerala house and they've maintained the old home charm.
I would also like specially note the owner of the place. He's sweet man who's extremely hospitable. He makes sure every customer who comes in for food is happy and checks up with them if they're satisfied or not.
My friend had a special request of being hot milk which was not in the menu and he made sure she got her milk. :)
And no matter how much we insisted, he refused to charge us for it.
'Dal Roti' by all means is what we call the stereotypical 'home food' we have when mom's angry. Unlike it's name, the restaurant offers much more than stereotypes. The kathi rolls, for one, were an absolute delight. I initially thought they were overpriced for 200 bucks but when I was served this huge roll brimming with a yummy filling inside I was in for a surprise. So that's what we tried - chicken roll, egg roll, paneer roll, mutton roll and a Thaali. The filling has a distinct Indian flavour (a version of chaat masala is my guess) that makes it so endearing when mixed with tandoori chicken (or whatever the case may be) and veggies wrapped in a slightly thick Porotta-like bread-roti. It takes a 5/5 from my end.
I read a lot of reviews about the owner of the restaurant and came prepared to ignore any stoic behaviour. But it turned out to be the exact opposite. He seemed to be a cheerful person and while my friend went to the ATM (they don't accept cards sadly) he took the time to tell me about the place which was under renovation until a week back. I guess they have had a complete makeover since they shifted place and revamped it (including the staff).
I would gladly return to this place more often and the next thing on my mind is their fabled giant-size 'Awadhi Paratha' which serves 4; they run an offer of giving away another Awadhi paratha if a person manages to finish off one paratha all by himself. Quite a thing! Won't run for the competition but would love to try this one.

Best Dal rotis in Kochi! North Indian food with a twist! Love their combos..one meal is enough for two.. u can also ask them to change the spice levels to your need.
It was our first visit in fort Kochi and we were hungry lyk anything we entered as a regular customers bt when service starts we feel very comfortable and owner self came to meet us given the suggestion to travel near by places how can we go wt places are good and we were so delighted dat we visit again next day for meal and dey treated as well.if I again visit fort Kochi this place is on my bookmark DN.
Me and my colleagues were in search for a good restaurant for lunch, and we accidentally bumped into Dalroti, in a pleasing simple ethnic ambience they served us delicious food. We were satisfied with the visit. The cost was reasonable. Will visit again for sure.
First restaurant suggestion in Kochi was Dal roti! So finally got a chance to visit this place! After a 45mins ride to Fort Kochi I was standing surprised when i saw a long que of Foreigners waiting for a table at this Humble small restaurant! After we got the table I glanced at the prices assuming it must be overpriced like any other restaurant at Fort Kochi! But i should say it was reasonable for the quantity offered ✌🏻 Do Try its Chicken Mughlai Paratha and Prawns Katti roll! Also as the name goes, you get best Dal here! Kuddos to the uncle running the show 🙌🏻 A big Thumbs up 👍🏻
KJ Herschel road, where this restaurant is located is a neat road winding it's way from FK to Thoppumpady. The portions you get are quite big here. Had stuffed parathas, paratha meals and Kati rolls. They were all quite good. The only downside might be that we noticed the cutlery was kept on the table, without a napkin or placemat, which is off-putting in the hygiene department. Personally felt tastes have been made a little bland for western tongues.
The food tastes tastes amazing, be it Kati rolls, or mughlai parathas, or roti sabji.. and it is worth the money ! The waiters are courteous and the ambience good too.. Highly recommended place in fort Kochi !
Very good and affordable indian food! Their masala chai is also super delicious. We tried their paneer masala with some indian bread and it was also really good.
It was delicious, and thali was super good. But, having read all the reviews and good feedbacks the expectation was super high. It was like any other north indian restaurant. The owner was kind enough to ask every single one of them about the food. The Gulab Jamun was exceptional. In total, it was a good experience.
I've been to fort Kochi a thousand times and I've heard about Dal roti since like forever! But for some wierd reason it's only now that I decide to actually try this place out!
Since my friends couldn't stop gushing about their kaati rolls, I decided to order one. And not just any kaati roll, the double egg paneer veg kaati roll😈(yea, I am an eggatarian for a month and this was the one with the most number of vegetarian ingredients in it). Goddd, it was soooooooo good!! If this is what we get to eat, I don't mind giving up meat for good!! We also ordered the stuffed chicken parantha..which I was told was really good too and very filling. It looked very yum and I had half a mind to dig in (but I didn't). There's something about their parantha...it's soft yet crispy and a little sweet. I loved it!
Oh and btw, the portions are quite big here. We ordered one dish each and could hardly finish half of it. When I ordered the double egg paneer veg kaati roll, I thought they meant they put two eggs in it and hence the name. But I understood I was wrong when the order came. It's twice the size!!! It was around 12 inches long! The waiter was courteous enough to smile and tell me "madam, eat as much as u can and we'll parcel the rest for u". And that's exactly what we did!
So overall, I loved loved loved the food, the service was amazing and the bill was very reasonable! I'm definitely going back for more!
Dal Roti is a great restaurant in Fort Kochi dishing up wonderful north indian food. The place has got a rustic ambience. The servers were pleasant and helpful. Happened to meet the owner of the restaurant too who was very welcoming. Coming to the food, I'd give it a 4. The paneer parathas with the kadai Chicken gravy was great. The kathi roll could have been prepared better.
I'd say it's a value for money place especially for the times one's craving north indian food
This has always been of the my favourite places to visit with fam. Amazing varieties of good North Indian dishes, which is a pretty amazing feat in our lil Kochi. And their kaati roll, my oh my. That has been an all time favourite of mine for years and it's just something you can't get over. This cozy lil place is a must visit for all who visit fk and want some good mouth watering food.
Decent food, although not as authentic north indian as it may sound. Good ambience , friendly staff.
Parking not a problem as well since there is a ground near by!
Very hospitable and ta food is őúttá this world especially ta Chicken Double kaati rOll... Very tasty..I loved ta double kaati roll and ta banana lassi. They also have a wide variety of items.
Went to this place on a rainy sunday.Though me basically not from Kochi. Found this restaurant in Fort Kochi which some good veg food which are something difficult to get near coastal area.
My order was limited to daal takda, paneer butter masala and pulka. Yeah Forgot mention a double chicken kati roll(it was 4 times I think atleast a foot long).
The food really tasted good and the paneer gravy was great when taking into consideration the region we were in.
Food: 4/5
Service: 4.5/5
Ambience: 3.5/5
Value for money: 4/5
Best place for North Indian food specially for phulkas with proper North Indian touch. The complimentary chutney is YUMMY. The price for food not bad 😋😋😋
Small place with nice ambience. Tried the chicken katti roll which was very filling and a bit hard for me finish. I personally felt it was because the sauce was overpowering. Hoping to try more on the menu soon!
Good food, good ambience and very good customer service, sad that they are not open from dusk to dawn! Would be great if they had extended the timings!
June 2017- currently under renovation!!
I visited this place 2 yrs back..we first ordered the Thali as the owner suggested is their speciality..
But I have had better Thalis than this..
The Star is their rolls which is the best I have had till date..really good and must try..I have read reviews where the owners behavior was not good..
I faced no such problems and was a good experience..
Amazing food and wonderful ambience. A must visit of coming to Fort Kochi. Unfortunately it's temporarily closed till July 5th for maintenance and renovation.
Had lunch here last week. Food was mouth watering to say the least. We had rotis, mutton kati roll and a gorgeous plate of tawa sookh murg and watered it down with some yummy mango lassi. Highly recommended
I am from hyderabad and i went on a bike trip in kerala and reached fort kochi after alleppey. So i was looking for place for lunch and came to know that this is the place where you can get the band for the buck. As you enter you will be welcomed with clean and simple ambience in a age old building and i liked it. So i have been for lunch and ordered thali followed by gajar ka halwa which was mouth watering, i liked the way it tasted and decided to visit again for dinner and so i did. This time i have ordered chicken parata which is the best one till date, its crispy, crunchy and its flakey. Hospitalilty is seriously good. I took an oath that whenever i'm in kochi i will visit dal roti again.
Really amazing people and quick service but the food was way too oily for my liking. Lassi was acidic and the Paneer Kati Roll was a tad bit sweet.
Amazing is the word for this place. Authentic north Indian food at great prices. Service is super fast and we always got our food in a couple of minutes.
Food: Good
Price: Reasonable
Ambience: Not Great
Table: Have to wait
Pictures:
1: The famous Double Egg Chicken Kati Roll
2: People waiting outside for the table.
This review is for the first timers at Dal Roti. The first thing you need to try is Kati Rolls. It's a paratha bread wrapped around a chicken/egg/paneer filling. It's wholesome and would take a fair amount of time to finish if you are one with a normal appetite. Another must try is the Mughlai Paratha. Another paratha based pancake-y dish with the stuffing of your choice. The ambience is typical of Fort Kochi with the Portuguese feels. A word of mention for the courteous and friendly staff, though it felt they weren't too quick with the orders. Or maybe we just felt it because we were extremely hungry. Overall, an easy to find location, great ambience good staff, and most importantly amazing food.
One of my friend introduced me to this restaurant , it's non AC, it's design was kind of old school, food is really good, a bit more than what was expected, really clean kitchen, the best kitchen I have ever seen in a small restaurant , the kati roll is defenitely worth a try. All the food here is well prepared.
Finally I made it it to the restaurant I had bookmarked very long. They serve authentic and tasty rolls. It's a no-frills place to enjoy good food. Must try.
Been here with friends sometime back. Was the first time and ordered all that we thought was eatable. The owner informed that what we ordered was too much for us to consume.
Upside: kaati rolls.
Been here a couple of times when I've been to Kochi, and I must say it doesn't disappoint. It's probably most famous for its Kati Rolls; paneer being the one I normally have. Their Chicken Bharta and Paneer Masala are also very good, and the Mutton Rogan Josh was a big hit with the family. The veh biryaani was very oily! I also tried the Gajar Halwa; not too sweet, but not too bad either.
Dal Roti is the only place in Cochin which comes to my mind when i think of kati rolls .They serve a wide range of north Indian dishes, But their most popular dish is their Double Chicken Kati Roll.
The kati roll is just spectacular ! and there's a reason why they call it a "Double Chicken Kati roll" , Its incredibly huge!! and it may also look pretty plain but yet it still manages to gives you that immense gastronomical satisfaction.
A must visit place in fort kochi. I am a big fan of their katti rolls. Ambience is good and pretty good service. The rates are reasonable.. Try this out fellow foodies. Highly recommended!
Nice restaurant to have North Indian dishes in fort kochi with delicious taste. One can enjoy touch of normal roadside restaurant with well maintained, homey food, cleanliness, well behaved staff and smiling owner.
Food is very different from what I usually have. It was actually really nice. Very filling. The quantity is a lot. One kati roll is more than enough to fill someone. The ambience of the place is very different and they've tried to keep that old Dutch theme which was really nice. Overall, it's totally a place I'd go again.
Nice place to have north indian food. Nothing great about their ambience but what makes them different in the warming owner who receives everyone with a pleasing smile. We had veg thali, chicken patiyala, paneer masala and paneer mughalai paratha. Over all everything was okay. A special mention of their thali. Their daal, chawal and aloo reminded me of home 😊
Ambience - 9
Food - 10
Even though I've tried different types of Katti Rolls, the ones here are extra ordinary ! It's just those kind of types that you feel sad when it gets over.
The Mughalai Porotta is also great.
This is the best in fort kochi !
I'm a great fan of Kathi rolls and I must say I have never tasted anything like this!!! It tasted soo good and also fills yr tummy!!! Service is also good !! Everyone has to try this place!!!! Veg as well as non veg taste delicious!!!!! :)
Place throws an ambience, from an old fashioned North Indian house.. located at the Lilly's street, lil inside to the beach.. ther service was nice.. though we went on a Sunday night, and crowds just turning in huge numbers, the owner greats everyone with a smile, and was very courteous.. to manage tht huge crowd sober, hats off.
Food was delicious. Khatti rolls felt exceptional compared to the usual ones tht we get in Kochi.. ginger lime and pappaya fresh juice was a total disappointment though..
The long wait for getting a seating has to b at the back of ur mind before u visit.. however it's a good family place, and is definitely worth a try..
What an absolute beauty of a place. As soon as we entered we knew it was going to be a special experience. The owner is such a courteous guy .. makes you feel so wonderful. The menu was too cool ... but what it delivered was way out of my expectation ... we had fish parantha, egg mutton kathi roll, gobi parantha with mutton .. every dish was special ... a must must go when in KERALA !
Strongly Recommended !
One of my favourite places for lunch in fort kochi. The service is amazing .The khati rolls are one the best khati rolls that i have tried. Also try the mughlai parathas.must visit in fort kochi
Very nice place!!!
Good and tasty north indian cuisine they provide.
Ambience has a classy look!!!
Located in Lilly street near parade ground,
Prices are little bit higher .
No air conditioning.
One word to say, Exceptional. After leaving Mumbai, it is from this place that I got to taste some authentic North Indian cuisine. All the rotis with sabji were superb. Alu Paratha is like, we can't eat alone. For 200 rupees, the quantity they provide s more than sufficient. One Lassi at the end too, makes our tummy full and yummy. Altogether we 10ppl as a group enjoyed there the most. AC was not there and we saw a lot of people leaving the restaurant due to that fact, but I pity on them as they have missed the best north indian lunch 😊
I havnt seen so much prawns on a single biriyani . I felt like rice and prawns proportion was something like 60:40 .
Budget hotel were ur tummy with be full
Also if u wanna have food with really low budget go for Allo poratta were u will get curd for free
Dal Roti: As the name says it.. it is a very desi Indian feel restaurant with a very welcoming and warm energy to it. It is a very chilled out place to be in moreover it offers variety of food items very authentically prepared by the couple themselves. The best part I found about the restaurant is the owners are actively involved in the restaurant from serving to supervising everything, which ensures quality and quantity both.
Now, we ordered a special Dal Roti parantha and there it was one big parantha with all the good paneer stuffings in it and it was one heavy deep fried parantha which sufficed for two people. The server suggested us correctly to order only one dish which satiated our hunger of the stomach and the soul.
There are any array of dishes you can select from as we saw and smelt the dishes passing by I can tell every dish felt like a piece of heaven if only my stomach would have allowed me to eat so much... they close around 11pm so it's a little early for people who are night crammers. Last order goes in at 10-10:20pm... by 11 you can see it being winded up n being closed. They have very refreshing drinks as well along with awesome ginger and masala tea versions which are a treat for the taste buds as well as for the throat.
Once you get out of the restaurant you feel satisfied and assured that you won't get ill and whatever your stomach has is of good quality. The ambience of the place is both rusty and authentic, it's well furnished and well set up.
The amount of foreigners is a lot which in itself says how popular it is with people from all over the world.
It is one place you cannot miss to be in when you visit Kochi! Happy eating people. Cheers!
A favourite place for north india cuisine, dilapidated building converted into a restaurant. Very warm hospitality extended by the onwers and staff
You can ask for awadhi parantha challenge , dont know if it still exists but it was very popular way back in 2009.
If you are lucky enough you may get to chat with Mr Menon who is a prominent personalty of cochin and the owner of the outlet. Every article of that outlet has a piece of history. Visit explore and spend some time chatting with menon family, i am sure it will be a memorable visit
Came here one afternoon with friends!.....A bit musky and humid....once we enter. But all that goes away...once ur head starts filling up with amazing smell from the food!.....Filling...perfect spices..and..super crispy...
This place will take you through a journey to the old times . The ambience of the place is plain and normal but has a good vibe in it . Reminds you of old days , the food served is also indian cuisine .
Tried the thali and must say it was fulfilling as anything , plain normal food with not much spices in it along with indian parantha would be considered a treat by most I'm guessing . The drinks and other items are also great. The owner also is a nice guy who would make sure to take feedback and ask bt the food too .
A journey through time and cuisine
Most of the foodies of cochin experienced this place. One of the best food outlet in fort kochi. Dal roti is a small north indian restaurant. People want to try authentic northie dishes must try this place. Good ambience and Dal roti look like old fashioned house format restaurant. Must try Dal roti famous chicken kathi rolls and awadi samoosa. Tried chicken kathi rolls , its tastes good but little pricy. But if you considering the place , fort kochi the prices are normal ones.
Love this place and absolutely love the mughalai parathas they have here... Its good north indian food that we get here. And the owners are really nice helpful people. Its a bit far for me but occasionally i love to eat here...
Dal roti serves you with one of the most authentic North Indian dishes and maintains they presentation and quality in taste. For anybody visiting Fort Kochi it's a must try restaurant. The service they provide is very good and they make you feel like home. Only disadvantage to this restaurant is that it closes too early for such a good restaurant. So if you wanna have some tasty food in the night, you better be there latest by 2145hr.
Loved this place to every nook and corner, which was very well set. The menu is quite extensive and to everyone’s delight, reasonably priced.
I had their Chicken Mughlai Paratha, and my goodness was it filling - the tummy and the soul!
This restaurant is in a old building, and the got north indian meals. Taste is fine but a bit over priced because of the tourist from out side India comes here to try indian spicy food. Ambience is fine. Service is good.
Fantastic dinner experience! We loved this unpretentious and friendly place, and every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious. The Kati rolls and Thali sets were fantastic and amazing value for money. Will definitely come back!
A nice little place to dine out in this historic town. Service was quick.
Update:
As someone who frequents this place, here's an update written reluctantly. My last two visits were absolute disappointments. While the channa wasn't boiled even by half, the phulka was as thick as rubber, and most curries were mere mishmashes of puree and burnt paneer. With butter/oil poured generously into every dish, it was a cholesterol nightmare. Instead of the authentic Desi khana that one used to get, we were served some complete train wrecks on the platter.
That said, I am a bit sad after learning through Maps that the place is gonna be shutdown. Will miss the current ever-smiling owners who'd been doing a great job all these years. Will miss you. 😢
The owner cooked our 4 year old plain chicken and chips with ketchup, which was a great start. We are trying to get her to eat local but it is a tough so this was a fantastic beginning to our night. A great looking restaurant with a nice ambiance. As for the food, it was lovely, a great selection we could eat here every night for days and never be bored. We will be back soon.
We had a super tasty lunch at Dal Roti in the middle of the day. Three thalis with all the fixings. Good flavor, not too oily. Lime soda served less sweet like we asked. The owner is gregarious. Dal Roti is worth a try.
One of the best restaurants at Fort Kochi! Sublime North Indian food with a classy interior tone makes it one of the must visit eateries in Kochi.
PS : Don't forget the Kaati Roll!
Dal Roti offers a good selection of North Indian food and doesn’t disappoint. With the most basic of furnishing, great service and hearty food at a very reasonable price it’s hard to go by.
Good food and drinks. But they care for foreign nations only. If you are an Indian then less attention especially from the proprietor.
Very nice food. Gave a feeling of fulfillment and reminds of home made food. Simple and colorful. Fort food at a very reasonable price
Visited dal roti to fulfill a sudden north Indian food craving. The pros nice ambience, very friendly and pleasant owners who were ready to help us (during rush hour and nearing closing time) to our multiple requests , food was really tasty specially the chicken curry and lachada paratha, food was priced reasonably.
The cons although the bread and chicken were good the dal and veg curry didn't excite our taste buds ( from a keralite standpoint as am not an expert to judge north Indian cuisine).
Overall we had a pleasant dinner In a warm relaxing environment.
North Indian dishes mainly served here. Good ambience and may cost around 600 rupees for two people to satisfy the appetite.
This 12 year old restaurant is place you must go to for cheap and amazing food, for aura, to meet other travellers, to appreciate the beauty of this 210 year old building.
Good and tasty food ..
Card payment is not accepted (its a major drawback)...
Delicious thali, waiter recommended the Lachedhar Parathas thali with mutton. Couldn't have been happier and didn't get close to finishing the meal
Food is great and ambience is notch. Pricing is way better and apt when compared to other north indian restaurants in town.
