On my Kerala Tour this season, I set my priority to visit this so hyped restaurant in Cochin famous for its Banana Leaf Meal.
I must state that the food was really amazing and the staff was courteous.
One should definitely visit the restaurant to experience the Kerala taste!

I liked the food and the ambience of the place. Surprisingly, I didn't have the much sought after sadya. I opted for chana bhatura and wasn't disappointed. Since I liked the people and the place so much, I'm certainly returning - especially for the special sadya.

After a long time had a chance to visit BTH again with family. Always the first choice to have a traditional Kerala lunch (sadya) on plantain leaf....for Keralites staying outside Kerala, this is always welcoming and kinda nostalgic....ambience is ok and taste as usual is superb...neat, good and fast service....definitely a must stop for all vegans....just one shortcoming .... the price was a bit on the high side...that's my opinion.....

On my recent trip to Kochi, I visited this place for just one thing, the “Sadhya”.
Sadhya is a traditional meal of Keralites. It contains several dishes, pickles served on a banana leaf.
Here at Subhiksha, a Sadhya meal costs ₹250 per head and can be refilled unlimited times (Personal experience- you get full in 2 refills).
After the meal they serve you the traditional sweet of Kerala called “Payasam”, something unique for a North Indian like me (I’ve shared the picture below)
The ambiance is really quiet and gentle. Hospitality is really professional and comforting.
They also offer buffet Lunch which is really good.
I’d highly recommend this place if you’re anytime soon traveling to the God’s own country and want to create some really sweet memories of authentic Kerala food.
You can follow my food journey on my Instagram food blog @homeforhungry and stay connected with me there!
Thank you.

Subhiksha is one of my favorite veg restaurants for the last few decades. Once I was a regular to Subhiksha in mid 80's when I was posted in Kochi for 3 years and recently I visited the place last week and recalled the olden days of having my favourite dishes. Happy to know that they could manage to retain the same taste, flavour and service to their regular customers.

This is one of the oldest restaurants in the city and in its heydays used to command a premium clientele. However, with the advent of other new generation restaurants as well as evolving tastes of the people, the restaurant in its current form and shape is at par with a middle category restaurant in any place.

We went here on a Saturday evening after a temple visit. Though my wife's family used to be regulars at this place some time back, it was my first visit. Being a pure veg restaurant and from the guests around, seems like a large chunk of the customers head straight here from the temple. The location therefore is an inherent advantage for the place.

We had masala dosa, paper roast, onion uttappam and veg biryani. The quality and taste of all these was good, with the masala of the masala dosa deserving a special mention. The accompanying chutney and sambhar with the dosas also had the right mix of spices and condiments to give that perfect taste. The biryani and the raita that accompanied it tasted like homemade, with no excess spices/ add on ingredients. The biryani certainly was very different as compared to a north Indian biryani or for that matter a typical Kerala biryani but it stood out for its simple preparation. The quantity was also just right.

The service is pretty quick and the staff are helpful and courteous.

The only low rating I would give would be for the ambience which can be improved. The current one with an overkill of blue doesn't suit such a restaurant.

There is ample space outside the restaurant for sitting and relaxing. Being part of a hotel's ground floor has its obvious advantages. Parking space also is quite sufficient.

Overall, definitely worth a second visit the next time we are around in Kochi.

As a child, I remember this was my goto place for breakfast on a weekend. Place is still clean, as compared to the rest of the restaurants in the same league. Consistent, if nothing else.

I have been to this restaurant innumerable times since my childhood. Whenever I am in Ernakulam, I make it a point to visit BTH and dine at this restaurant at least once.

The restaurant, which serves only vegetarian food, is known for its meals, idlis, vadas and dosas. They also serve reasonably good north Indian food. I have seen many a loyal clientele who would only stay and dine at BTH.

This time, I visited Subhiksha in the evening. I wanted to have something cold and have a small snack after my evening walk. Unfortunately, my favourite veg cutlets (with lots of ketchup) were sold out. Anyway, I was happy sitting in this restaurant and sip a Fresh Lime Soda and Sweet Lassi.

PS: Probably the only thing I want to change in this restaurant is their decor. It is loud with garish blue prints on the wall. Can they make this subtle in terms of colour and decor?

FOR THE LUNCH (KERALA SADYA), it might be the best place in Kochi. Amazing taste for all veg curries and yummy payasam all for 160 Rs. I haven't been there for any other meals but this was really awesome. The service was outstanding as we dont need to call them as they will understand even before. Best place fofr vegetarian lovers.

The rating is only for their awesome lunch meals. I had been regular here way back in 2004. But even now the taste is just awesome. For Rs.160 their unlimited meals is just takes you home. The hygiene of wash area etc need improvement. The staff were really good and understanding.

This is one of the group hotels of BGR Hotels, which owns the famous BTH chain of Hotels.

My current review is for dine in restaurant “Subhiksha” Vegetarian restaurant.

As the name says it all, this is a pure vegetarian joint located on the Durbar Hall road in Ernakulam.

I did visit this place for around 3 times during my stay in Kochi for Lunch & Dinner.

If you are here on a weekend, do try their Buffet meal, which comprises of both South Indian & North Indian, i was here on a Sunday for Dinner and did try their Buffet meal, which was quiet good priced at 220.00 for an adult & 120.00 for a child.

Also, i would highly recommend the range of Dosas available @ BTH, especially the Onion Uthappams are too good.

Talking about the North Indian items tried here, i was happy with their gravy preparation as compared to the other restaurant owned by the same group.

About the Tandoori items, it was an ok affair, can be prepared & served better.

Chinese items were a kind of OK, about the pricing front, all the items are moderately priced.

I visited Subhiksha during a day trip to Marine drive in Kochi and it turned out to be one of the better places to have a Kerala style Sadhya.

We were a group of 5 and had to wait a while before we could get a table. However, once we were at the table the service was lightning fast. You have to buy a coupon at the counter before hitting the table. The waiting area is down the hall on the inside so make sure you go there and wait. I had to figure this out on my own.

The overall quality and value for money of the food was great and it was interesting to see that they served warm herbal water as accompaniment. For those who don't know, this actually helps in better digestion of your food.

I would particularly like to highlight that the rasam and sambar was too good. Definitely
recommended if you are a vegetarian and looking for true blue Kerala style food in Kochi.

I was wanting to share my feedback about Subhiksha on Zomato for quite some time but Ernakulam was not listed. Now that is, there goes...The food here is unbeatable. I had some good feedback about this place from my relatives even before visiting Kerela. The entire range of food we tried from dosa to idli and wada was brilliant (not to forget the backdrop of a rainy day in Ernakulam). To gulp it down we had I believe what is called the Pathimugam. Amazing.

I will come back here for sure whenever Kerela beckons. Final take on the experience is as follows:

Food: 4/5

Price: 4/5

Service: 3.5/5

Ambience: 4/5

Overall: 4/5

Ask people for Subhiksha and no one's going to have an answer. Ask for bharat tourist home or BTH and everyone will show you where it is.

The restaurant is the most busy at lunch, with its completely vegetarian fare. The favourite however is Kempu, the coffee shop. It is open till 2 am and that matters when you finish a second show and are craving a masala dosa at 12 am.

That said, the coffee shop is a super busy one, and you may have to wait for a table. And wait you will surely have to because their benches and chairs are screwed in place. So no loose chairs to be carried around. An open kitchen keeps your doubts of cleanliness at bay and self service is the norm.

Must-have here is a butter masala dosa followed by a coffee. The dosa is a pricey affair at 80rs (other metros have it cheaper) and the taste, according to loyals in the family, has dwindled over the years. Another favourite is puttu and kattan kaapi at 1 am, with a pappadam. And the restaurant is a calm place at that time of the night.

It's a simple no-frills place with touches of greenery and earthy tones in terracotta art work. They have a garden space too, if you can brave the mosquitoes.

Pretty neat place, good ambience. Tried the Kerala style Sadhya. Maybe it wasn't a season to try it because the curries was pretty less. Despite of that fact, I enjoyed the meal. Pretty nice. Also tried butter naan and paneer butter masala which was so good.

Subhiksha is actually better known by name of the hotel it is in - Bharat Tourist Home or BTH as it is locally known and referred to.  Very few locals are likely to know name of the restaurant!  This used to be a simple restaurant with a small section that was air conditioned.  The not air conditioned part had typical laminate topped tables and wooden chairs with waiters in uniform serving quickly and politely.  In vegetarian restaurants in the city, this is probably the best without much competition.  They are now fully air conditioned with a recessed area that allows for large groups and where they serve the buffet breakfast at mornings for their hotel's guests.  I like their banana leaf lunch which is a very authentic Kerala meal served with boiled rice.  This used to be their most popular menu item many years ago and continues to be so even today.  It has all the dishes of a typical Kerala meal and is very filling and nourishing.  They also have a special meal now but I recommend the banana leaf meal.  Their north Indian fare is a disappointment and best stayed away from.  Their local menu is their forte and one gets a taste of it at the breakfast buffet.  There is generous serving of fresh fruit, particularly locally grown pineapple and also steamed banana which is a accompaniment at breakfast in the state of Kerala.  They serve the idiappam (noodle like) and the plain appam, both with vegetable stew and those are also their popular dishes.  Prices are higher than at smaller restaurants which serve similar fare, but BTH has been around for 50 years and is going strong even today for its good vegetarian food.  They also have a sweet counter at the hotel lobby and from which they serve patrons orders.

This is a very famous south Indian restaurant near Marine drive . Its another authentic pure vegetarian Kerala restaurant. Its little expensive then aryaas but then you get more options here. Best of all you are served food on banana leaves that makes this restaurant a must to try specially for tourists from outside Kerala. This restaurant is always full and suggests how popular it is equally amongst locals and tourists. They have 2 options one is meals and second is buffet. Buffet is little expensive than meals. I went for meals not for monetary part but the locals suggested me for that and I didn't regret. It was heavenly experience to gorge on amazing local cuisines and to top it all the payasam cooked in gur. Please do go here and enjoy the meals with your family or friends..

A budget-friendly hotel in Ernakulam, Kerala, India. It is popular among travelers looking for a clean and comfortable place to stay at an affordable price. The hotel is also known for its pure vegetarian restaurant, which serves a variety of South Indian dishes. The staffs are friendly and helpful. The restaurant is excellent, and the food is delicious. The hotel is also a good option for families, as it offers spacious rooms and a variety of amenities.  Ample car parking space..

Me and my wife recently stayed here. All I would say is this. Better than staying at fort Kochi stay here and visit fort Kochi and other multiple places around Ernakulum from here as location is its best point (whether boat jetty or Ernakulum shiva temple or railway station or garden and marine drive to stroll around or to go to Bolgatty palace) Staff is very good and you will get a great Appam here from one of the old uncle here who makes really great Appams and other food is also very good (it’s a pure veg restaurant) Thank you BTH looking forward for our next stay again

Its very old & traditional restaurant in Eranakulam. If you are a vegetarian i highly recommend this place. Meals are so good and taste like our homely food. One meal coast you around 230 Rs. Considering the quality and quantity of food served its worthy. They also have a good customer service.

The hotel is very good and beautiful. The food tastes good and is served hot, but a little costly. I am not able to tell much about the staff as when, I phoned to the reception asking for help on connecting to the wifi, they said the wifi isn't there, even though it was being shown in my available wifi list. I felt it a little odd. Even though it was just a night stay, they should have provided the wifi, but they denied.

Hotel and rooms are good. Food is also good but it's highly overpriced. Plus you don't get fruit juices or fruit based milkshakes in the hotel. It's ok if one prefers overpriced vegetarian food. Else is better to look at other options. It looks as though that hotel management is covering up for the economical rates for the rooms with the high cost for food
