Tintin and the Brussels Club is a Tintin-themed Belgian and seafood restaurant located at Hindustan Park, known for introducing Belgian cuisine in Kolkata for the first time, the owners inspired by Tintin comics and the life and works of their creator the Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi, popularly known as Hergé.
The huge eatery - that can accommodate upto 40 guests - is decked cosily with Tintin paraphernalia, an utter delight for Tintin fans.
The inside is divided into three sections: Tintin's Room dedicated to the amusing Belgian detective himself, Calculus' Room dedicated to Professor Calculus and Haddock's Room themed around the cursing ill-tempered seafaring pipe-smoking merchant Captain Haddock.
The entire place flaunts a cheerful Tintin-themed decor, with walls dotted with covers of the comics, prints, posters and sketches of the characters, including a night street scene of Brussels in the Tintin Room and another pretty image of the same Belgian city in Haddock's Room.
The Tintin's Room and Calculus' Room are done up in shades of warm yellow, with a fish aquarium and a life-sized standing cutout of the scatty half-deaf physicist and professor Calculus in his room (great for posing for cheeky photos), while Haddock's Room is painted deep red with a beautiful polished old piano on one side, used for live piano sessions every Saturday night.
The place also stocks up on board games, Tintin puzzles, comicbooks, Tintin-themed mugs and coasters (made by the owner herself) for guests, and also a display of exquisite Tintin souvenirs handpicked from Brussels on glass shelves in a corner.
A soft board proudly boasts of a collage of newspaper cuttings of media coverage and accolades garnered by the restaurant.
Just before the entrance to the main eatery a large cut-out of the butler Nestor and shelves full of dainty cakes and Belgian chocolates welcome visitors.
We were graciously welcomed and greeted by the beautiful owner herself (she welcomes visitors personally) and were seated in the Tintin's Room, adorned with chandeliers and photos of Tintin and his pet companion Snowy (even one of the opera singer Bianca Castafiore), with a television screening "The Adventures of Tintin" animated series (a much-loved childhood show for many of us) and a curated playlist of classic retro American numbers by Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard and others softly playing in the background, much praised by guests.
The cuisine of this place is primarily Continental, with dashes of popular Belgian, French and European dishes like CAJUN FISH, POT ROAST MUSSELS BELGIAN, BELGIAN PORK SAUSAGES WITH STOEMP, OSTEND FISH, POMFRET MORNAY, FLEMISH COQ AU VIN, BELGIAN AU GRATIN, GENOVESE CREAM PASTA, RUM OMELETTE etc. gracing the colourful pictorial Tintin comics-themed menu.
Being an avid reader of the Tintin comics since childhood had been eager to visit this quaint place, and finally got to tick it off my bucket list. ✔
We ordered:
> BELGIAN FISH & FRITES: A platter of 6 pieces of beer-battered fresh authentic bhetki fish accompanied with Belgian fries and tartar sauce.
The fish tasted gorgeous, with a crispy mouthwatering coating (tasting a lot like KFC's Popcorn Chicken and almost everyone loves it so the drool-worthy taste of the fish can easily be discernible) that simply melted on the palate. The BEST and most lip-smacking battered fish preparation I've had till date.
The bed of thick delish frites (French for fries) and the tartar sauce served as the perfect accompaniment to the dish.
A must try. 🐟🍟
Price: INR 280
Verdict: 5/5
> BEEF BITTERBALLEN: Bitterballen are a Dutch meat-based snack typically containing beef or veal. The ones at Tintin & Brussels Club were 6 pieces of yummy beef meatballs made of roasted herbed beef paste, speared with toothpicks and served with mustard sauce.
Bitterballen is a popular dish in Belgium, as informed by our splendid hostess, adding that the ones at this particular place are made not of beef keema but with a special portion of beef.
The beef balls with their crunchy coating and fresh beef stuffing made for an amazing appetising snack. 🥩🥩

> FRESH LIME SODA: Simply the most refreshingly divine lime soda I have come across.
The drink comes in Sweet/Sweet-and-Salty/Salty varieties; we opted for the Sweet-and-Salty flavour.
The blend of subtle sugary sweetness and tangy salt was delightful enough to quench one's thirst and satisfy the soul.
A must try if one is not opting for mocktails. 🥤🥤
Price: INR 75
Verdict: 5/5
> COFFEE MUG: Freshly-brewed and piping hot milken home-styled coffee served in a Tintin-themed coffee mug printed with the cafe's logo.
A yummilicious beverage for coffee junkies. ☕☕
Price: INR 75
Verdict: 4.5/5
> GARLIC BREAD: 6 pieces of crusty loaves of buttery garlic bread, laced with the fragrant aroma of garlic. Not the best garlic bread but quite delicious to munch on and begin a meal. 🍞🍞
Price: INR 100
Verdict: 3/5
Had wanted to try the homemade MASCARPONE CHEESE ICE CREAM as well but sadly was full for the night. 😌 Would love to return to try the desserts and some of the other signature dishes.
Only the Belgian-style grilled sandwiches are available from 12-6 pm everday while rest of the dishes are available all the time during functional hours, while coffee or tea are served mostly till 8 in the evening.
Staff are polite and extremely friendly. Service is a bit slow but it doesn't affect the wonderful culinary experience. 🍽
Hospitality of the kind hostess was notably warm and homely which I do not get to see in most places; we were given a personalised tour of the place by her post-meal whereby she explained the concepts behind the theme adding generous informations about the place.
She interacts with guests from time to time, clicking pictures of and with guests, and also personally informs each guest about regular food events, like an upcoming pork festival about which she gave us a hint in advance.
We were visited by her at regular intervals, smilingly asking about the food and also informing about a particular delicacy and its contents. Sometimes guests turn to her for suggestions regarding the dishes but if one is prior prepared like me (youngsters these days normally are as she commented!) one can order one's choices straightaway.
Prices are rather reasonable considering the quality, hygiene, standard and quantity of food.
Bill and a bunch of complimentary toffees were brought in a cute Tintin-themed box.
They levy service charge. At a pocket pinch of INR 825 (without any discounts or privileges) the evening fare was a highly satisfactory lovely Belgian affair with Tintin and his friends! 😋😍🤩
Overall if one wishes to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane and relive one's glorious old childhood days with Tintin, try authentic Belgian cuisine or is fond of Continental dishes in general one should definitely visit Tintin and the Brussels Club to indulge in marvellous European delectables and spend enjoyable moments with friends, family and loved ones. :):)
