Would love to talk about one of the #oldest & my one of my favourite #SouthIndian restaurant in the city today - talking about #MadrasRestaurant on #CRAvenue which was founded way back in 1939 - a simple restaurant where one has nothing else to talk about but the delicious & authentic food on offer at an unbelievably economical pricing even today..
Walked in here after ages a couple of days ago for lunch with #mom who was reminescing her quick #lunchdates out here with #dad in the late eighties where the bill used to touch 5 to 7 rupees max for a Masala Dosa & Idli - can you believe that đ
This place is currently owned by a South Indian family who also owns the Udupi outlet across the road - the original South Indian owners who founded the restaurant are no more a part of the management these days.. This place always hustles and bustles with office crowd but now they are struggling to make ends meet unfortunately because of this Covid situation - let's hope another iconic joint doesn't shut down.. Please walk in and enjoy a meal whenever you are around.. In today's job hopping world - it's so enriching to find most of their staff working for more than 35 years at this same restaurant..
We enjoyed #GheeIdli (freshly made - melt in the mouth idlis), #MeduVada (the best & crispy yet soft vadas that I have tasted till date in the city - reminded me of my Mumbai days where I use to get this taste more frequently even from roadside vendors), #MasalaDosa & my favourite #GheeButterOnionSadaDosa - the #coconutchutney served with these delicacies is truly mind-blowing to say the least..
As a footnote, let me also talk about my personal views about #AnandRestaurant (which is relevant out here because it's also a pretty well known South Indian restaurant just a couple of buildings away) as well - the more upmarket South Indian restaurant nearby - they were always grossly overpriced but atleast they offered quality food on the table but offlate in the past couple of years I have realised through 3 to 4 visits that their quality has deteriorated drastically yet they are still grossly overpriced - I would suggest everyone to opt for #Madras anyday if you are looking for good South Indian meal in that vicinity rather than just a great ambience)
My humble two cents: #MUSTTRY (if you haven't already) đ¤

Delicious place to have South Indian food at pocket friendly prices.
Happy fooding!
The restaurant is famous for its south indian dishes. I ordered masala dosa and crispy baby corn from here. It was well packaged with proper portions. Liked the timely delivery.
One thing I didn't like is the dosa is not appropriate for a non-spicy food lovers. The white chutney and dosa masala was spicy, being a non-spicy food lover i didnt like that.
Overall it was good, loved the crispy baby corn.
This is one of the Best South Indian foods Joints of Kolkata.
I Ordered Masala Dosa and Idly during lock down.
The taste was awesome. The amount of chutneys given along with dida Was quiet adequate.
Going there since childhood. Aankh band karke jaiye udhar aur khaiye..
Upma.
Cheese Onion Tomato Uttapam.
Upma tastes very simple. It's very light as well. The curry leaves had a strong flavour infused in it. The sambar and the coconut chutney accompanied it very well.
The Uttapam was very crispy. It looks like a South Indian version of a pizza. Moreover, all the ingredients seemed fresh to me.
Overall, a nice experience.
Located near Chandni chowk, this little place serves one of the best south Indian dishes. Small cozy place with different types of crowd. In frame : Chessy onion uttappam. Rate (5/5)
Been visiting here since childhood. The food here is tasty and the prices are also affordable and reasonable. The rawa masala dosa and the onion masala dosa are my favorite. Idli and vada are also worth the try. Do visit with family or order in if delivery to your house is available.
Dropped in here for two quick small meals. Ordered curd rice the first time I was there, and an idly-vada combination the second time round. The food was quickly and tasted wonderful. In particular, the day I ate the curd rice, instead of the standard lime or mango pickle, I got what appeared to be a pickle made from arhar/toor daal. When I complimented the server on the quality of the pickle, he very kindly served me a huge second helping free of charge. A small thing, but these matter.
The restaurant is a small one located near one of the exits of the Chandni Chowk Metro station. It has two rows of tables with seating for six or four per table depending on the size. It is fairly clean, and the service was quick (though I should keep in mind that I had ordered dishes that could be served almost immediately). I will certainly visit this place again.
Craved for South Indian...this one is a perfect placeđ..the hot bowl of Sambhar and the spicy chutney along with the cheesy dosa completely stuffed with the masalas really made my dayâ¤...Good job guys...
Excellent south indian food consistently served up. Great if you are getting a discount as well. This place is fantastic to mid-range priced cuisine. A gem and a must-try
The real feel of South India.
The dosa is just the best.
right near Emall, this place has maintained high quality always.
Sometimes finding reservation can be an issue.
I have visited this place many times in my childhood.
Recently I visited this palce I was quite surprised nothing has changed.
I ordered Cheese masala Dosa and Mixed Uttapam both were very tasty. đ
It's a nice and quiet silent place in Chandni Chowk. And service is also good and courtesy staff ..nice ambience and decor . Along side it's comfortable for family and friends both..
Been here a lot of times..an air-conditioned small place with good south indian food. Their dosas are big and crispy!
A good place opposite to emall!
One of the oldies but goodies of central Calcutta. I find Madras to be quite underrated, especially since the quality of food is equal to, if not better than its neighbor, Anand. Try the mixed veg uttapam here. If a parcel that reaches you 30 min post preparation can satisfy you, imagine what an immediate dining experience can be like. I'll be sure to return for more.

Located near Central Avenue Crossing this place is mostly crowded in lunch hours! So you can assume the kind of quality they serve. This is one of the best places in Kolkata to have South Indian delicacies at a very affordable rate. Do try their South indian thali and i am sure you won't be disappointed. Service is good and staff is polite.
I tried out this place few months ago. As I love South Indian cuisine too. We ordered Mashala dhosa, Butter Mashala dhosa, lassi and fresh lime soda. I enjoyed each and every items. Would like to visit this place again.
One of the best south Indian restaurant of Kolkata and very affordable. Pakoda is must try. Other than South Indian, Chinese items are also delicious. I can't imagine if someone can make sambhar n chutney as good as Madras restaurant.
I have been to this place many times. I like their masala dosa , Idli , vada. Tastes really good .Seating arrangement is also fine .You can come here with your family.
First time I came to Kolkata I was searching for south Indian restaurants and I landed up here. Was a little bit afraid while I ordered onion rava dosa. But after eating felt like ordering another one. And I did order an onion uttappam too. The chutney taste was really great. The mixture was perfect. So please do not miss this place if u want to try south indian.

"Madras restaurant" can be identify by the name as it serves typicall south Indian cuisine, been there lot of times but this time opted for home delivery.
ordered one masala dosa & one veg mix noodle
Dosa was good, sambar was also good , but there main game changer was the coconut chutney though they serve the dry version for home delivery don't know why as their coconut chutney is really awesome but no regret.
noodle was well prepared contains some small cubes of paneer, tofu , diced baby corn & usual veggies used to make that noodle ,quantity of both the dishes was appropriate for 1 person each.
Very good food..... , reasonable price..... , amount is also very generous......, good staff as well...., only bad thing is ambience .......
One of my fav place to have food vn its mood to have food outsyd ofce... I visit dis place almst evry week... Food is all very tasty... situated near my ofce n i hv almost tasted each n evry food item here... tge biggest advantage of this restrau is dat it is pure veg... keep up the hard work...

Simply loved the south Indian dishes. Cheese dhosa was so delicious. Must visit coz I challenge nothing can be better than this. Plenty amount with less price was the main attraction. This place is very famous and Sundays are very crowded.
Recently I went n had breakfast.. I ordered butter dhosa and onion dhosa, mix uttapam and one sweet lassi. I guess my breakfast was superb. They make so yummy south Indian items.
It was a lazy holiday today and was quite hungry and wanted to have something South Indian ... after some browsing ended up with this joint which is quite famous my dad also recommended me this place I ordered a 1) sada dosa 2) veg masala dosa.
Food-The food was quite tasty and good I really liked their chutney it had a very beautiful taste of coriander leave , Chana and coconut amazing chutney . The sambar was not that bad either. Both the dosas were quite nice the stuffing of the masala dosa was quite generous and light and tasty .. as it was a home delivery so the dosa's got a bit soggy but still it was worth the taste and money . I recommend if you go there and have it you will enjoy .
Taste-4/5
Packing -4/5
Value for money -4.5/5
Blink and miss place, there is nothing noticeable about the place and renovation is long overdue, as the name suggests place is known for south indian cuisine, quality of the food is good and reasonable, perhaps the reason the place has steady flow of patrons.
Amazing South Indian food in a good atmosphere..Lovely people..amazing taste of the dishes..price wise quite OK..will visit soon..keep up the good work..
Haven't dined in but had food delivered from this place multiple times. Makes delivery also on Sundays. Dosa's are nice, enough for a lunch, vada and fried idly ai tried was also good. They deep fry the whole idly without any extra veggies or sauce, something unique from this place.
Even Chinese from here is too good. Tried baby corn from here, its long and not that crispy. Fried rice and mixed veg noodles had baby corn peices as well and abundent in quantity. No issues in quality and no oil issues as well. To go to place for office lunces
The dosa was just good enough, and the sambar and coconut chutney made it even more good. You can feel coconut taste and shredded coconut in chutney. The ambience of the restaurant was good. But the Waiter's ask for the tipđ.
This is a place where you want to come time and again to have amazing variety of dosas, sambar vadas and idlis. On the other hand ypu also get veg thalis for lunch. This place is not hard to find it's very much near to chandni chowk metro station, kolkata.
Cleanliness : 9/10

One of the places that makes me feel nostalgic. I usually prefer going there when I am in that area. Keep up the good work you have been doing for the last 80 years.
Never been there bodily but ordered take away 2-3 times from this place. So straight away let's talk about their food.I have tried their Masala dosa,Onion uttapam, crispy chilly babycorn.
Crispy chilly babycorn-(a must try)
Masala dosa-very much authentic dosa with their tasty samber & chutney.(recommend)
Perfectly prepared onion uttapam (recommend)
This is also value for money. So give it try.
A good south Indian restaurant. There's always a rush, when i go. Have tried their masala dosa, cheese masala dosa, idli and uttapam. Dosa could have been better. Service was fine.
Very good place for South Indian Breakfast in Kolkata. Slightly overpriced. Good Ambience and very responsive staff. Idli, Dosa, Vada and Upma were good. Sambar was not Tamil Nadu style, but still was decent.
Lunch thali was very nice.. very affordable..great taste
Perfect quantity.. authentic south indian..filtet coffee was vey nice and perfect..
Just beside my office, so occasionally I visit this place. The food is good and goes easy on the pocket. The variety of Uthappam and Dosa is noteworthy. I can't write anything more about South Indian foodđ
Great south indian food. Neat and clean and very easy on the pocket. Safest option if you want to have a light soothing lunch. Cheese dosa and uttapam are very tasty. There is an option to taste paan sprinkled with sweet desicated coconut if you like. Overall I would give it a four đ
Lies opposite to e-mall, a decent eatery that serves proper South Indian food, this place is to try out surely for breakfast. Other cuisines are totally worth it.
I went there for breakfast and ordered:
Upma, it's worth having.
Vada, it was utterly delicious
Idli, was too soft
Aloo bonda was not upto the mark
Coffee tasted the best.
I'll prefer this place certainly for breakfast
Tried thali there. Complete taste of South-Indian. Was just amazed to see how the taste they have preserved and every bite there was enjoyable. The service was good and the food was tasty. A good place to visit and try.
Madras restaurant is a quiet and small eatery located opposite Chadni Chowk metro. I didnât know much about it before entering. It was found just like that. The place might not impress you right at the beginning but its food will surely do. Their taste is finger licking. Even if you are not fond of idli/dosa, you wonât be disappointed if you try it once. Undoubtedly itâs one of the best restaurants serving south Indian food. The chatni/sambaar-wala wonât stop filling your bowls unless you vehemently say no!! Iâm eagerly waiting to visit it again.

This is a strict veggie restaurant in Central Kolkata...a family restaurant...no booze...this restaurant has two sections...wouldn't suggest to go the inner section as it's stuffy as kitchen z right next to it...
Since its an old restaurant and a South Indian delicacy restaurant so its small...max 30 pax...so during lunch time on Sundays you might have to wait for your Chance to have a table...and be prepared to share ur table during rush hours...
Must try would be Uthappam (apart from a foot long dosa)...also if u love spicy food try crispy fried baby corn...ask to make it spicy...one of my personal favorites...
Though I am not a fan of south Indian food...but still found the taste authentic in south indian flavours...u can get many varieties of dosa,uttapam...the food was served quick, the decor is neat n clean, the staffs r very well behaved and most of all very very pocket friendly both in quality and quantity....must try out for south Indian food lovers

This small joint located on Chitranjan avenue. Neat restaurant and impressive quick service in this south Indian restaurant. Delicious south indian food. I liked sambar, uttapam and onion dosa. The staff is courteous and over all service is good. Their paper masal dosa is a must try. The food is authentic and the place has reasonable price.
Location-Chandni Chowk opposite united Bank branch . Ambiance-Its air-condition...otherwise no specialty as such but seating arrangement suited me fine. Ordered idli vada plate and an onion masala dosa. Chutney was served with a topping of mustard and curry leaves.. loved it ..
Sambar was nice too, not too spicy. Filter coffee is d best way to round of your meal. Must visit if you want authentic South Indian food!
Madras restaurant is located at Chandni Chowk, Kolkata is an old & popular area for authentic South Indian dishes at an affordable rate.
Service is fast with efficient staffs.
Tried Cheese masala dosa and coffee, dosa was soft inside yet crispy outside, good fillings and very tasty. Coffee was good too.
Overall a satisfactory experience.

Price is good quality is top class .
A very nice place to have authentic south Indian food
Ordered the Cheese Masalaâ Dosa and then Lassi.
The Cheese Masala Dosa was good. The size was smaller than Anand. It disappointed me. The masala aloo was great but as the size was smaller, I will deduct some points here. The lassi was really good. It was like having something special.

Must visit if you want authentic South Indian food! Ambience might disappoint you but the food certainly won't!
If you are just looking for good South Indian food experience then your search probably ends here. Great delicious food. Love their chutney. Service waspretty decent. It's a must try for South Indian food lovers.

This place gives me a lovely throwback of my time in Bengaluru. A laid back ambiance with humble and courteous staffs, people come here to enjoy some of the finest South Indian delicacies in cheap and affordable prices. I have tried the Butter Masala Dosa along with Filtered Coffee. A lovely combination to opt for, try this place if you around.
Perfect for a south Indian dining experience!
Neat A/C restaurant with quick service.
A cold glass of water was helpful.
Ordered idli vada plate and an onion masala dosa. Chutney was served with a topping of mustard and curry leaves.. loved it!
Sambar was nice too, not too spicy.
Masala that goes in the dosa is a huge portion so splurge if you love potatoes :) and consider sharing if you aren't particularly a potato fun ;-)
Filter coffee came in the traditional bowl and a coffee glass in it..the format we are used to in south.
Overall enjoyed the offerings at this south Indian restaurant and was in South for a while :) :)
Thanks Team Madras Restaurant.
Well visited the place on Sunday for lunch had to wait 15/20 min to get a seat. Ordered pakoda, filter coffee, cheese onion rava masala dosa and butter onion rava masala dosa. Taste is really very nice, friendly staff, quick service. But I find dosa for 140/160/170 each really very expensive. Certainly a pocket pinch. Else very nice.
The restaurant looks like one from 90's and it actually is from 1939, ambience is like one from good old day's. Food is too light, delicious and it tastes exactly how a proper South Indian food taste like. We went for breakfast and ordered idli, upma and aloo bonda. Never had such light upma and idli. The aloo bonda was okay. After which we had coffee which made the breakfast end on a good yummy note.
South Indian restaurants has been nowadays becoming very rare .But luckily we got 2 south indian restaurants in chandni chowk .But we decided to go to madras restaurant. The staffs were very friendly and courteous. The ambience is not up to the mark.Coming to the food we ordered 2 masala dosa,1 curd vada. And in beverages we ordered 1 fresh lime soda ,1 coffee and 1 cold coffee. The cold coffee was not as good as per the price .The curd vada was pretty good. The coffee was okay .
Went here few times here with my South Indian friend it's his recommendation , place is Little bit down market but food is vey good , varieties of dosas , idli , uttapam to mention , parking car is tough in this part of kolkata , price is reasonable , but food and taste is authentic
A good south Indian restaurant they started in the area before anand but due to the difference in ambience remained second choice for the family and was an alternate incase you don't get seat there coming to food taste and quality is at par with anand but a bit pocket friendly love there south indian coffee which is still served in south indian style
Overall a must visit for all south indian food lovers
As I mentioned in one of my previous reviews..am not atall a vegetarian person :p n neither do I like South Indian cuisine... Bt been to dis place for a couple of time... I would like to say...they provide you wid 100% vegetarian foods...quality is good...but it is detoriorating wid time..
Recommended Dish - Dosas
It's a very good place for Veg Food in Kolkata, but only for Dosa, Wada, Idly and uttapams. The meals is not very good.
The 0.5 rate is less only for bcz this restaurant doesn't have PURE VEG written on it's Sign Board. They have to write PURE VEG.
A small South Indian-Chinese outlet, especially meant for South Indian food. The restaurant has a compact setting, air-conditioned and luminescent setting that reminds one of a nightclub. The food was delicious, no doubt. Especially the Onion Uttapam and Butter Masala Dosa. I must confess that I was left licking my fingers. On top of that, add Chocolate Milk Shake to the order and a decent outing is done.
This quaint little restaurant has a history of serving authentic south Indian to the souls of Kolkata since 1920's
After hearing fond experiences from my grandfather decided to go for a bite
Location-Chandni Chowk opposite united Bank branch
Ambience-Its air-condition...otherwise no speciality as such but seating arrangement suited me fine
Staff-Are courteous and polite and are ready to help out with menu
Food- It was the best part...instead if conventional dosa idli I went for South Indian Thali...comprising of two vegetable dishes...Rasam...sambhar...rice...paratha..papad...and curd to finish off the meal...each and every item was delicious and authentic and not to mention wholesome...the sambhar and Rasam were just fabulous...
I recommend this place for every lover of South Indian cuisine...a must go!!
Devoid of any striking decor this place speaks of quality food which is exceptionally pocket friendly.
Thali is worth d money!đ
Been there on three occasions and food had been consistently gud...
Filter coffee is d best way to round of ur meal.âē
I personally rate it high as it was a favorite post class hang out place during college time. Food is good and pocket friendly when you r surviving on pocket money. Service is super quick. Dosa and uttapam has been reinvented in countless ways evident on there menu card.
Tired hungry want to have food without a hole in pocket go here.
Madras restaurant is a no frills restaurant, Ordered Idli,it just melts in your mouth, amazing value for money, if you wanna have quick south Indian bite, you must head for Madras cafe, extremely economical! @tejmishra
I grew up around the vicinity of this very old food joint therefore I share a very different experience with this place. My mother used to get lunch sometimes from here when she was in no food of cooking and fell in love with the south indian prep of this restaurant. I have seen two different forms of this place. Previously it used to be like a huge hall room like a mess and later on they revamped it to make it look like a restaurant. Â The food and the taste is very authentic and so is the filter coffee. I am even thankful to swiggy that they have enlisted this restaurant in case you are ordering in the vicinity and I order food almost everyday for lunch at my office near the high court. When the food bag reaches my office everyday its like a piece of my childhood waiting there to be cherished :)
Madras Restaurant is a very old restaurant situated at Chandni Chawk. It is not a well decorated place with soothing ambience but the food they cater is mouth watering. I have never tasted their Chinese cuisine and always opted for South Indian delicacies. Their name actually suggests that they cater authentic South Indian food . I have tasted their Rava masala Dosa and it was yummy. They serve tasty idlis and dahi vadas also. I have ordered Upma once and it was the best one that i have ever tasted. The same thing can be said about their veg uttapam. I was highly satisfied by both of their salted lassi, sweet lassi. This place is pocket friendly, serves tasty south indian food with good quality and quantity.
They serve Chinese and south Indian cuisine . I had ordered their food from swiggy . They have a huge menu for dosas . Around 100 dosas to choose from, however its not crafted properly as most of the dosas will be identical in taste . They could have added few fusion dosas like the newer restaurants are adding .
Coming to the food I ordered for an onion uttapam, a cheese uttapam and an onion cheese rava dosa.
Their sambar is absolutely perfect and chutney is thick not watery . So plus marks for that .
Dosas were still crisp.
Cheese quantity they provide in their food item is awesome . Its like completely loaded with cheese . You will love it if u are a cheese lover . A very value for money restaurant . Total pocket pinch was just Rs415

North kollkata was waterlogged due to heavy rainfall when I reached this place . Though my friend who took me was a regular visitor of this joint . The onion masala dosa with coffee came as a bliss for me as I was completely drenched and just wanted exactly something like that .
Love mutton kima (muglai flavour). Though this place is not hygienic and located at very crowded place.. But one would not regret trying out their secret ingredient laced mutton kima.
Is there any youtube video covering their restaurent n recipe??
Excellent restaurant with exceptional food quality abd reasonable price.freshly prepared items.their biriyani, mutton keema, rumali roti are famous
They have less variety in the menu. But I loved the taste of their food. I ate mutton champ, mutton keema with Rumali roti.
The mutton is very tender and very juicy. The spice's in the mutton is perfect. The combination is best for mutton lover's. Must visit place if you are in Kolkata.
They also have biryani you can try that.
The food was very tasty. I ordered a chicken bharta and it was very good and yummy. The price is also very cheap . The mutton kima was also very tasty.
But the restaurant needs some cleaning.
Food Quality Good. Very Popular Restaurant. Should be more focused on hygienic
Though the restaurant situated in a densely populated open market area but the Moughlai dishes are finger liking delisous. All dishes are made on the clay oven that makes the dish taste so good
Located at Brabon Road, famous for Mutton Kima. Biryani, Rice Kima, Roti, are a few item you may like most
Small eatery . Maximum 20 persons can sit and take food onsite. Very reasonable Tariff . Good quality.
Food was good. Mutton keema test was very nice
Madras restaurant is very good Restaurant and special Moghlai item and there Mutton qima is very famoush
Roti and mutton keema is best seller dish.
Just awesome food if can cope up with the rush.....
Quality - Good. But price a little bit high wrt the place and cleanliness.
Excellent mutton chap at very reasonable price. Though the place is small.
Small eatery in business district but serves yummy spicy food
Great food served by really nice people
