Hotel Sidheshwari Ashram
19, Rani Rashmohani Road, New Market Area, Kolkata

Hotel Siddheswari Ashram is a pice hotel and it is now more than 80 years old. This hotel is still carrying the pice hotel legacy. If you walk down SN Banerjee from from Elite cinema bus stop towards Sealdah, after a few minutes, you shall see Hotel Aura on the right in a four-point crossing. Turn right and keep your eye on the left. After few spices shop you will find the place. We ordered vaat, Posto Bora, Chingri Malai curry , kasha mangsho. The tastes of each and every dish will give you a homely feeling. One thing is most impressive about these pice hotels that fishes, vegetables are bought on every morning from the market. Prices are very pocket friendly.

Its a very old eatery situated in new market area,Esplanade. I had visited this place few times in my childhood almost 20 years back. They have added one AC section now.
This time we reached at 3 pm. Most of the menu was finished till then. Still we managed to get rice, fish egg pakora curry, chicken curry, prawn malaikari. Prawn was amazing. It was jumbo tiger prawn served in a nutty gravy.
Chicken curry was good too. Fish egg curry was ok.
Will definitely visit again.

Hotel Sidheshwari Ashram : 80 year old, Pice Hotel (Mirza Ghalib Street, Kolkata)

Delicious Traditional Bengali Food at an extremely affordable price is what this heritage eatery has to offer! Food served in banana leaf plates, their exquisite and vast range of freshly prepared food is huge! The original eatery is the same like before but they've incorporated an AC section too! (only Air-conditioned pice hotel in Kolkata)

Service is quick and prompt as well.

What we tried : Chingri Mach er Malaikari, Bhaat, Daal, Fulkopi'r Torkari, Jhuri Aloo Bhaja, Murgir Jhol, Chutney, Papad served with Lebu & Lonka! We missed out the Kabiraji Jhol since we were late for lunch! I personally enjoyed all of their curations thoroughly till I was full to the brim. We ended our meal with their Shada Mishti Doi which comprehended the meal absolutely!

When I saw the menu of this place I knew I had to visit this place , the rating of this place was very high and the rate as low as 10-15 rs for a dish.

It is situated in the New market area, easily spotable if you follow the maps. It's situated on the first floor ,a compact little place with not so clean ambience people waiting for chairs and table to vacate. They have variety of dishes for both veg and non veg.

We were travelling during the Pujo and so only fish and one chicken item was available and no veg items were available. I tried the chicken curry with rice and the chicken was great nicely cooked in different spices and the rice made it better.

I don't know how this place serves at so low cost and still manages to keep the taste great.

Go visit this place these places actually serve the best Bengali dishes. (If you are some one who is aware of the cleanliness of the place or wants a ac this place is not for you.) If you love food irrespective of the ambience this place is for you.

If you really want to taste everyday bengali cuisine, pice hotels are your best bet, and this one is best of the lot. Pice hotels has a charm of their own. Democratic seating and always crowded. If you only have food in mind you will up for some authentic bengali comfort food. Supportive staff and minimum pocket pinch. Ordered two fish meals with accompaniments for just 280/-. They cut the chase simply by focusing on taste. Already 94 years and still going strong. Don't forget to order fish, it's their speciality.

Old and nostalgic hotel. A must try resturent.
Planty of seeting availablity and a small ac room available who don't want seet at the regular place.
Stuffs are very well behaved and the manager is always busy for your seeting and also engage with customers.( This is the best part of the hotel, which is missing in well decorated fancy newly born resturants.)
Food quality is just awesome.
Postor bora, Mutton kasa, chingri malai is must try.

Located near New Market, Esplanade, this is one of the famous pice hotels in Kolkata. The entrance of the hotel is very narrow and one has to climb a steep as well as narrow stair case to enter the hotel. They have two types of sitting arrangement, non-ac and ac. During lunch time it is very hard to find a table, because the hotel is visited by daily workers and they have their lunch here. As all know they have price for a single piece of lemon also. We have ordered Parshe mach, katla kalia, macher tel chochori, begun vaja, jhuri alu vaja, macher matha diye dal. All the items are extremely fresh and tasty with budget friendly price. Those who are used to eat a higher salt in their food, they may face some taste issue while having the food. Otherwise it is a very good place to have lunch after a busy day of marketing.

One of the best Bengali pice cultured hotel of Kolkata with the tradition of serving food on Banana Leaf and water in earthen pot or "ভাঁড়". They have two sections, one is A/C cabin which is very small and nonA/C section which is always congested. Though Hygiene could have been more better, but the food was fine and pocket friendly as well. They serve a long list of fishes like Jeere Bata (Cumin grounded and pounded) diye Macher Jhol, Elish, Vetki, Pona, Chingri, Pabda and it goes on.

The day special veg dishes were Neem Sukto, Dhokar Dalna, Macher matha diye Badhakopir torkari. However, we missed their famous "Postor Bora".

We ordered Rice, Mug Dal, Jhuri Alu Vaja, Dhokar Dalna, Jumbo Prawn Malaikari, Mutton Kosha, Mango Jelly Chutney. The lemon wedge and onion was the accompaniment.

The Mug dal was so awesome, not the regular thin one. It was served with cashew and Narkol (Coconut) Kuchi. The Dhokar Dalna was disappointing. The prawn was really jumbo and worthy for 200/- INR. Mutton was so-so but the Chutney was the show-stopper.

It was a nice Bengali food journey all over and that's too in a very pocket friendly manner.

We visited there for two times and we must say that it is one of the best traditional bengali pice hotel in entire kolkata. There are loads of heavyweight restaurants in Kolkata but this one is something special.
The history says it is a very old hotel in kolkata. It is heard in earlier days that women cooks the food here. Still they uses earthen oven to cook food with the help of coal and woods. Thatswhy the taste is something exceptional.
Here you should not expect a cozy ambience. But you can expect for a good meal. All types of bengali food with a reasonable price with a perfect taste available here. They provide earthen pots to drink water and fresh banana leaf on your plate..The foods available here is a daily basis food what we regularly eat at home just like ' মাছের মাথা দিয়ে বাঁধাকপি' , 'মুড়ি ঘন্ট', 'পটল পোস্ত' etc. You can get a perfect meal at around ₹250/ two person.
We ordered there rice, daal, muri ghonto , ruhi kosa , chutney etc. They uses coconut and raisin in 'daal' and that makes 'daal' is 'The daal'. Ruhi korma is a must try food here. The gravy has a taste something exceptional. We loved it. So it's a very wonderful memory we have in there. With Monami Das

This restaurant comes under the "Pice" category where basically you'll get deliciously made Bengali food which is served on green banana leaves and water in earthen pot. This 81 years old eatery situated at free school street just few minutes walk from "Khadya Vaban" Ambience is not excusite. The main USP is their food which will touch your soul. If you're someone who's staying faraway from home, this is the place where you should visit.
I ordered: Rice,Dal,Alu vaja,Postor Bora,Rui Vapa,Mutton and Chutney. Each and every food has that touch of love and affection that you crave if you're staying away from your mother. After the lunch I couldn't walk, I was that much full. If you're a lover of bengali food and wants feel that nostalgia of old Kolkata do give a visit.

Such polite staffs are hardly found anywhere else. Shocked to read that right, but yes this outlet is a gem in Kolkata. It has an AC seating area for 10 as well as normal seating area. As others already said, don't go by the demeanor, time is kind of stuck here at in fifties. The old time charm is addictive. Coming to food, its plain and simple and there lies the appeal. Most looked like regular customers, but in the digital era and emergence of food blogging, servers here are very well aware of a new breed of patrons lurking in every now and then(which is good and bad as well) Special mention must be made for the often mentioned posto bora. The fishes were so fresh and lightly yet expertly cooked, you would have a comfort feeling of home cooking.
I had no gripe except there was a bit of discomfort while paying the bills. The server took me to the cash counter and I paid. I offered him some good tips which he gleefully accepted and vanished into thin air. Then another guy pointed out I wasn't charged for the water which cost so and so. When I paid for the amount he handed me over some portion of the balance and kept the rest. Instead could have straight asked for some tips which I would have happily obliged to. It left a bit of bitter taste.
But I still can't recommend this pice hotel enough and if I can manage my schedule, I would love to come back again.

Don't go with the appearance. It is the hidden gem of esplanade, you may have some problem with locating it but it is worth of find. I went their alone ordered steamed rice, moong musur daal, aloo borboti r torkari and steamed rui.
Rice was well cooked, dal was thick and homelike.
The torkari was really tasty and beyond my expectations.
The winner was the steamed rui. A huge piece of juicy soft rui with mustard gravy. Heavenly it was.
I never did have a fish like that to be honest.
All this for just 125/-
If you are missing home and stay alone in Kolkata. Don't waste time visit this place.
It would also not take a hefty pinch in your pocket like other bengali cuisine restro in city.

This place is a hidden gem for the bengali food lovers. My foodie soul always hunts for this kind of place which people usually overlook.
This place falls under the catagory of pice hotel, located at the new market area specifically says Mirza Ghalib Street. If anyone coming from S.N. Banerjee Road, take a left turn from the hotel Aura and you will find it on the left hand side of the main road or if coming from Lindsey street take a left turn from Khadya bhawan and walk for 3 minutes and you will find the place on your right side. It is located on the first floor of the building.

Nothing much to say about the ambience of this hotel. It has a small AC accommodation which can serve max 12 to 15 people at a time.
As I have been here many times so I can say that my favourite dishes are postor bora, potol posto, chechra, murighonto, chingri malaikari, chitol macher kaliya, parshe macher jhaal. All of these dishes are just superb in taste though whenever I tried mutton it disappointed me.
Staff are very well mannered and always ready to serve you and guide you to choose the dishes.
Pocket pinch is very less it can cost max Rs.300 to Rs.400 for 2 people .
Guys dont go by the outer look of this place, just come here and enjoy the bengali delicacies. Hotel Sidheshwari Ashram

The posto’r bora and the steamed katla were the highlights of the meal. A good posto’r bora– a massive patty of poppy seeds, onions, and green chilies that is deep fried till the surface turns golden brown and the inside is still creamy and mushy– after a filling meal can bestow upon you some restful hours of sleep and the one from Siddheswari Ashram didn’t disappoint on that front either. I felt the mutton, often the hero of the late Sunday lunch, was somewhat overpriced and didn’t score high on taste. Perhaps my ghoti tongue wanted a hint of sweetness! I wasn’t happy with the rather plain mangsho’r jhol we received here. But experts recommend skipping the mutton here to focus on the fish. True to their words, the peti of katla steamed in mustard paste was a revelation. The pungent mustard gravy tempered with green chillies complimented the tender, slightly sweet profile of a matured riverine fish. Each bite felt like a step closer to food nirvana. And not to forget the crispy alu bhaja and the aromatic dal, the simple everyday Bengali foods that can be made such delectable with just a bit of culinary prowess.

I would have definitely missed out such a gem in this City of Joy had it not been brought to notice by my friend. I am not aware of what the area is called actually but it's int the Esplanade area - opposite of Hotel Aura!

The hotel is located on the 1st floor. On the right side is the general dining area and on the left is the AC section and I guess it's charge is a bit more extra than the normal one.

Ambience is very simple with marble top tables and wooden chairs. Food is served on steel thalis and steel bowls. If you wish your food to be served on banana leaf then you can ask them. You then get drinking water in earthen pots, else they will serve in steel tumblers. Banana leaves are chargable though, but if you want to enjoy on a green surface you can definitely go for it. Interior is neat and clean overall. There's no such stinky smell as it does in most of the hotels and restaurants.

Sadly there's no system of thali - veg, egg, chicken, mutton, etc. Each and every item is chargable. The menu keeps changing daily depending on the vegetable availability in the market. So, you get the opportunity to fully customize your meal.

We ordered the following - Rice, Cabbage curry, Moong daal curry, Rui jhaal. The meal gave a home-like feeling every time I took a handful. Each and every item was excellent. The fish curry was a little less salty but he curry was fine. Fish was properly cooked with tons of potatoes. The moong daal was simply outstanding - the star of the meal. It had coconut pieces, raisins. The cabbage curry had just potato and cabbage but was prepared very nicely. In short, no complain for whatever was served each being outstanding.

A tip for you: Take only one plate of curry and daal for 2 people because the amount may seem deceiving at first look but is enough for two heads.

Overall it was really a soul-soothing experience and I would definitely want all foodies to try out.

Happy eating!

Special thanks to Nill Sarkar!!

It basically potrays the vintage calcutta daily meal restuarant. They have a small room that has air conditioned, but the rest is normal non ac sitting.
There are no meal/thali system over here. The whole menu is a-la-cartë. And boy they do have a variety in their menu. Mainly bengali foods.
The service is also very pleasant.
Definitely a place to visit and enjoy a-la-carté style bengali cuisine.

Nowadays a hectic and absorbing schedule deters me from eating out every now and then, but there are a few places that catches me off the guard sometimes. This place is one of them.
The name may remind of a bygone era and so the looks suggest.Basically this is an inevitable pice hotel of the colonial Kolkata which used to feed the daily office crowd and local businessmen for days, months and years.Taste of foods were deliberately kept a little mild so that no one faces problem to digest.Bengali traditional foods topped the charts and used to revolve with the season and availability of raw materials.
People who cherish sudden dose of nostalgia, should come to this place right at the lunch time. The busy yet disciplined scenario of this eatery and the fantastic veg and non- veg curries are worth trying.Rates are stunningly nominal.
The location is called Janbazar, but for those who don't know, its just on the street behind Kolkata Corporation building.
Any fish curry, curries prepared with green vegetables and the Basmati rice is strongly recommended.
Don't ever think in dreams to bring cars.
One of those rare places where foods are still served on banana leaves and water given in earthen cups which swerves a foodie to a sense of otherworldly subliminal feelings.

SO finally made it to this hidden gem. It was a sunny afternoon with the help of google maps we could find it easily behind the new market. We sat in the regular section as AC section cost 20% more. The menu is written in bleckboard at the entrance. We have ordered fine rice, special dal, alu vaja, alu bhorta, posto-bori, parse, katla, mutton and chatni. All items were good specially posto bori. Mutton was simple and just like our home preparation. They served food in both in normal plate and glas & banana leaf and earthen pot. Finally and most importantly the price is on the lower side. STaffs were cordial. Only problem is the location as you may have to smell bad air.

Long story short, a non-bengali friend of mine wanted to taste some bengali dishes, and that led us here. I was strictly against visiting the overpriced Bengali cuisine restaurants present in the town because you get the real taste of daily bengali food only in pice hotels like this.

It can be a bit hard to locate this place, but then if you are following Google Maps thoroughly, you can easily find it.

I ordered the basic dishes which included -

Bhaat (Rice)
Daal
Aloo Bhaja (Potato fries)
Katla Maach er Curry (Mustard Curry)
Aloo Chingri (Prawn and Potato Curry)
Mangsher Jhol (Mutton Curry)
Aam er Chatni (Mango Chutney)

They asked and accordingly served it in the traditional way, i.e. on Kolapata (Banana Leaf).

The food was really good for the price we paid, and my friend was elated with the dishes he tasted. For me, it was more like eating at home, but he, again and again, mentioned that the Katla Curry with mustard was amazing.

The place was really clean, and the service was fast as well.

A budget hotel for Bengali food lovers. The ambiance is somewhat different than other places; the staffs here are in different uniforms depending on their specific duties, and the uniforms being half-sleeve shirt and half pants that come in Blue, Saffron and Gray colours. Both AC and Non-AC seating arrangements are available. Food is served in banana leaf and clay pots that would give you a proper Bengali essence.
All the recipies are delicious and often they try to surprise their patrons with certain special items like 'Machher dimer bora' or else, but make sure you get there early as they run out of these day-special delicacies too sooner.

Anyway, if you are around Esplanade area, thinking of having a Bengali meal in some budget hotel, don't forget to visit this place. It's totally worth it.

90 Years old "Hotel Sidheswari Ashram" serving Tasty Bengali Thali Under Rs.150

Price : ₹300 for two people (approx.).

Where : Near Society Cinema, Rani Rashmohani Road, New Market Area, Kolkata.

Three consecutive weeks of egg rolls, momo, biryani, Kebabs, fried rice and chili chicken. Calcutta must have something else to offer. Though biryani and Kebabs is the stated favourite of Kolkata, how could I ignore the mach bhaat – fish and rice tradition??

No day is complete for a true Kolkatan without having a fulfilling benagli thali on a Banana leaf. Banana Leaf tends to remove all toxins off our bodies. To relish a meal on a Banana leaf, I would recommend Hotel Sidheshwari Ashram

There is always an endless variety of fish from the simple chara pona right up to the princely hilsa (simmered in mustard oil with fragrant green chillies, black cumin seeds and turmeric) or chital maach that overflow from the plate like extravagant fantasies. If you prefer meat, there are pice hotels offering a mean chicken curry, slow cooked with ginger, garlic and onion that will rekindle memories of mouth-watering chicken dishes savoured at weddings. It doesn’t end here and so there will be at least one or two kinds of vegetable tarkari – cooked greens specials like muri ghonto (fish head in rice) or bitter-sweet sukto and hot steamed plain rice.

The service in this restaurant is rapid; call for anything whilst licking your fingers, and you’ll have it in a split second. You know how popular this old vintage restaurant is the minute you step into it - although it holds just tables, it is forever packed with excited, ravenous people of Kolkata.

Giving this “hotel” 4 rating just becoz of its food which is just too good.. typical north kolkata type “bhaater hotel “ it is. When i saw d entrance and d interiors i was a bit upset and was thinking whether i should give it a try or not.. decided to gv it a try and i am happy that it was a right decision.. their mutton curry, prawn malai kari, postor bora and everything else whatever we tried was just too good.. not pocket pinch but not going to hole ur pocket too 😀a must try for all foodies 👍

This is one of my favourite joint for "bisudhho bangali khabar". Sidheswari Ashram is a pice hotel so dont expect attractive ambience or top notch service. All that they have is amazing bengali cuisine in really cheap price. They have a regular non-ac section and an AC one. If you are going with your family or you want privacy & dont want to share your table with some unknown favea then I'll suggest you to opt for the AC section. We also choose the AC one. But you have to pay 20% extra to avail this which is absolutely ok I think.
Now coming to food, they provide Steel Dishes topped with banana leaves and earthen glass(vanr) for water which they charge separately along with the food. We took Rice, Posto Bora, Moong Daal(with a hint of coconut & raisins), Aloo bhaja, Katla Bhapa, Mutton Kosha & an amazing spicy n tangy Kooler chutney. All the dishes were amazing. Bhapa Katla was too good.Mustardy gravy goes really well with rice. There were four pieces of small sized mutton pieces(with bones) along with some amount of gravy. Overall it was really a good experience. If you are upto some good bengali food without cutting a hole in your pocket then this is a very good option.

Located on Free School Street, near Society Cinema, Sidheshwari Ashram offers a wide range of Bengali food. The majority of the people are office goers who works nearby, and the lunch time is pretty busy. Don’t get startled if you have to share a table with a stranger. Things are very organized and fast paced - the attendants are very amicable who will give you a feel of having food at home. They serve with utmost care and always have a smile on their face. The posto r bora, rui bhapa, machher matha diye sobji are must try. They also have an AC section which is comparatively less crowded. Please do not expect an ambience of a posh eatery, but I do affirm that the taste of food here can give tough competition to all the Bengali restaurants of Kolkata.

Hotel Sidheshwari Ashram may sound very old fashioned but the food served here is absolutely mouth-watering. An old restaurant in Kolkata, which serves delicious Bengali Cuisine. I would not ever known about this place until the day food was ordered to my workplace for an occasion.

This restaurant offers awesome Bengali food and I ended up eating a lot for my lunch. All the fish items were full of flavours and so was the mutton curry. A complete meal with Dal, Rice, Aloo Bhaja, Fish and Mutton. The fish and mutton were soft and tender. The food was mind-boggling with its unique taste and quality.

Would definitely try their food again! A must visit place if you are looking for authentic Bengali cuisine with home-like taste.

Love on a banana leaf!

In the age of fancy Bengali cuisine restaurants, some of the old pice hotels of Kolkata still serve good, traditional meals minus any frills at honest prices in a humble environment. Pice hotel essentially means an eatery of Bengali food that charges for everything other than water and salt, including a non-food item like banana leaf or bhnaar (earthen cup).

Had read a lot about Hotel Sidheshwari Ashram. So, visited this 92-year old popular pice hotel on a recent Saturday for lunch with colleagues. What I felt is encapsulated in the opening line.

We ordered fine rice, thick dal (they have basic versions of both), jhuri alubhaja (fried potato slivers) and Rui Kawsha (Rohu fish curry in thick gravy) for all. We also ordered Mocha Chingdi (dry banana flower preparation with prawns) and chutney which we shared. The portion size was good, particularly the alubhaja and mocha were enough for two. The food was finger-licking good and some items were surprisingly cheap! The common order cost Rs 91 each approximately. They have started a small AC section (seating 10 people) for sophisticated customers for which 20% extra is charged on the bill and that's pretty fair.

I have to go back there to explore more.

Have been here on a Saturday and yes this place serves lip smacking food. They give you an option of serving the food in plantain leaves or on the plate. Tried mota chaaler bhaat, pui shaag, mutton and aamer chatni. All of them were delicious and abundant in quantity. The price is reasonable and all of them costed me 140 rupees.
It is difficult to locate this hotel within the spice stores in Janbazaar but once you locate the hoarding, you have found a gem.

Much heard of - quintessential Pice Hotel of #Kolkata. Now, they have added 2 AC Cabins on the terrace. Excellent quality of fish. Best part is service in Plantain (Banana) leaves on steel plates and earthen cups (kulhars or bhaand) for glasses (Bottled Mineral Water available). The quality of the Galda Chingri (Baby Lobster) was excellent and so was the chara-pona (baby Rohu). Mutton was standard. The Hilsa (end of season) was just about ok. The Pui Shaak with fish head was delicious. Finally, the sweet and sour green Mango Chutney was exactly what the doctor ordered after such a lavish lunch. Definitely recommended for those fond of adventure.

Being a bengali পেটুক, born in Kolkata, I have a certain mental blockage against eating bengali food at a restaurant. I always calculate mentally which fish costs what at the fish market and what price I am paying for it at the eatery. Solely, due to this reason, I prefer a Pice Hotel than a posh “authentic bengali restaurant” anyday.

Now, why its called a pice hotel ? As far as my knowledge goes, this concept started a few decades back, in the era where things were available in paisa and then a full meal here (the basic ones) were available at the cost of a few paisa. Hence, people used to call them paisa hotel- pais hotel- pice hotel. Don’t worry please, these are pretty cheap (commercially) and VFM hotels- even today…….

Please ensure to reach the place early, otherwise, their prized and best item, kobiraji jhol (the lesser spiced, vegetable heavy fish curry) tends to get over. Other items to be tried are mangsher jhol and machher kanta chorchori. Another prized item is katla bhape. It's cooked with curd and very very lightly spiced.

Tips: Please don't miss the chutney here- it's a gem. And, there is an AC section as well as the old non-AC section. So, don;t worry.

If you are looking for a pice hotel with finger licking taste you should visit the hotel.

Today afternoon me and my colleague has decided to go for lunch in any good pice hotel and we leave our home made food at office. With all the hope we find out the place, which is fortunately very nearer from our office. As we expect they didn't disappoint us with their food. We used google map to find its location and while entering the place we check the menu written in Bengali and in English and prices seems on the lower side. We directed to seat in a table and as per direction we have noted our table number (it's mostly common in pice hotel,as they keep track of your order by table number).

The waiter guide us to select our items. We have ordered fine rice, special dal, alu bhaja, Muri Ghanto, Katla Posto, Mutton & banana leaf and earthen pot, as they will charge for banana leaf and earthen pot separately.

Dal was awesome, it has NARKEL, KAJU & KISMIS. Alu bhaja was not justified and Katal posto is simply man of the match and the waiter guided us select it over other fish, hence special thanks to him. Mutton was perfectly cooked, pieces are soft and juicy. Honestly we somehow finish the meal but any one or two item is sufficient for lunch or dinner, but with out the knowledge we ordered all.

They have a AC sitting place also which we discover later while paying the bill. Total bill was Rs.410/- only.

If you are looking for a authentic pice hotel you should try this hotel for sure.

Fine Rice:02
Special dal: 01
Alu bhaja:01
Muri Ghanta: 01
Katal Posto:02
Mutton:02

One fine morning while going to office I asked husband-man how about taking Pasta to a Pice Hotel; she needs to experience and cherish the real Mach-bhat er hotel after all and he started laughing. I didn’t even tell him the name of the hotel but he knew it that I was referring to Hotel Sidheswari Ashram. The flashback of our college days came back when he was in Jadavpur University and was battling with the architecture course and I was about to finish my masters’ in Rural Development at Kalyani university. That was the time when we just were friends; used to discuss our respective partners at that time and used to explore the area near New Market just as friends. Our lunch at that time was mandatorily at Hotel Sidheswari Ashram as that was what we could afford at that time with our limited pocket money and the types and amount of food (read mach- bhat and more served there). Somehow, destiny was laughing at us as at that time the story turned 360 degrees and we became the partners in every possible crime in life but the visit there at Hotel Sidheswari Ashram remain same. Coming back, to present day we didn’t discuss much that day but decided to take Pasta ( our daughter) to one of the famous Pice Hotel in Kolkata 4 days after that; and it happened to be Bengali New year that day. We were not sure whether she’s going to like the place or not, going to like to food or not but heredity has its role to play after all and we found the little lady enjoying everything there and we were relieved!

One of the hidden gems of classique Bengali Cuisine. Almost a fable. Interestingly I had heard about this place from another of my beloved, Sanatan da, who sells soup omelette and bread n butter at Russell Street. Santan da being the Johuree he is always pestered me asking if I had been there or not. So this Sunday afternoon I decided to give it a shot. First things first, direction : S N Banerjee Road Jan bazaar crossing, take left and walk for three minutes. Next to a spice shop, with a narrow alley moving in. The magic starts when you climb up the marble stairs.
Spic and span marble top wodden tables with straight back chairs. Like sex, good earing is best enjoyed in the missionary position ( that is on straight back wodden chairs).
This is a quintessential Bengali eating house, so one needs to know how the courses spread. Very courteous staff, but meaning business. There is almost a chant in the way they repeat orders. My suggestion will be to stick to varieties of fish, to be eaten with "Fine Rice " ( The "fine" being actually a menu item). For the first course I ordered Shukto bhaja, Sona Moog Dal. The waiter, immediately making out that I am a first timer, served me with a Maccher Bora, which is the best I have had, and that includes the gharana cuisines on both sides of the river. The second course was on Chingri, again a classic Ghoti trait of favouring that over Ilish. Vintage Bengali gravy, with no misery on the size of the prawns. Third course was about Jhal, and thus there was the Bhetki, midway between the ubiquitous Paturi and slightly aristocratic Jhal. Very fresh catch and piping hot, with the cilantro giving the excuisite aroma.
By thus time I have already eaten thrice my capacity, so had to give it a go. But not before a generous dash of kancha amer jal tok. I ended with the earthen lactic aroma of Misty Doi.
And the total bill wasn't even 300.
This place made me believe my muse Calcutta once more, and as I was coming out she whispered in my ears "There may not be a great living for everyone here, but trust me, there's a great life. For all"@

I recently visited this place on a Tuesday afternoon. I reached there during lunchtime. Almost all of their items were finished at 3:30 pm in the afternoon. This speaks highly about how popular this place is among locals. I ordered rice, dal, cabbage with fish head (only vegetable that was available at that time), pabda fish curry, chicken curry, mango chutney, papad and sweet curd. The food tasted really awesome. Though I did not like the taste of plain dal. This place has a old world charm and you get a vibe as if time has stopped, once you enter this place. They serve the food on banyan leaf (placed on a steel plate) and water in a clay pot. If you are going towards dharmatala from moulali via S. N. Banerjee Road, this place will be on your left hand side and nearest bus stop to this place is Janbazar. This place has washroom facilities, though not very clean.

Ingredients were fresh, portion size satisfying, and that is why I give 5 stars. The 5 course preparations were good overall, some were decent. The 'Posto bora' and chutney stole the show. Some curries presented a hint of sweetness. This might be a great relish for people but for me I like the spice blend fully expressed without a sweet sort of signature. Portion sizes were satisfying. Polite, ever smiling staff were at the table. We extended our group order while at the dining table and they happily obliged. Everything about the place matched my description of a Kolkata 'Pice hotel' with an authentic Bengali fare: delicious, satisfying and comparative value for money. The place is really busy and I recommend arriving early for lunch. I'm told they run out of menu options as the afternoon's demand picks up.

The real struggle starts afterwards to get the place to seat. The owner lady was kind enough to help us to get seat in AC room. But the real disappointment we have after the getting the food , pui chachhari and Rui Mach were average, dal and jhuri aloo bhaja , panda Mach and chatni were good. The real disappointment was chicken curry which was to hard to chew. I think this place is overrated.

Nice place for Lunch in the Janbazar area... It's like a hidden gem of the Kolkata market.. Nice Bengali Cuisine is served here with a very decent style... Till now it runs the old heritage style hotel with thousands of passersby daily. Many Bengali dishes are cooked everyday with fresh items. Favorite dishes mug Dal, posto Bora, aluvaja, Katla kaliya, Chingri malai Kari, Motton kosha, Chicken kosha, Ilish and Vetki..
