The breakfast served is soo good value for money nad the sweets are very tasty and fresh
This is located in shymbazar 5 point on the side of maniktola. The way they feed us is really awesome. They use bananas leaf instead of using plates to serve foods. I personally feel like banana leafs add more taste to the foods. The quality of the food and sweet is also good. I am a very old customer to this shop and love to eat here because they are still holding their quality. The jive goja is the unique product of them which I like the most. Their also famous product is chanar chop which is made of Chana and black pepper and is coat with some bread crumbs. Overall really love the shop and I recommend it for age people and of course for all
Haridas Modak is one of the oldest sweet shops in Shyamabazar,Kolkata, better known for their 'luchi & alur torkari'. Only Bengalis can relate to this emotion towards luchi - although it is unhealthy for regular consumption, the dish used to be the staple Bengali breakfast for centuries.
The love for luchi is heightened when Haridas Modak serves it on banana leaves with sweets like Rosh-Malai or Chanar Jilipi..! Pure bliss on an Ashtami morning...
Don't go on the looks. This classic restaurant located in Shyambazar is sure to astonish you with it's food quality.
Food :- The food here is good and I would recommend you to try out the "Luchi" since that Luchi and Potato that they give on the Banana Leaf is absolutely phenomenal and exceeded my expectations by a long shot. However, the potatoes can sometimes not be peeled properly so beware of that.
Ambiance :- The ambiance is not exactly very good but it's tolerable.
Service :- The staff is very polite but sometimes not co-operative.
Overall, a classic restaurant in Shyambazar that you should definitely try out.
This traditional place serves such amazing Luchi-torkari that it'll make you completely ignore the small sitting area or congested atmosphere.
Their Luchi-torkari is pure, pure heaven!♥️♥️♥️
This old shop is tucked away right at Shyambazar Mor on APC Road.
The charm of this place lies in the fact that they serve you luchi torkari on a banana leaf. The whole experience is awesome because it is a rarity these days to be served food on a banana leaf.
The luchis costs 6 a piece (as on July,2019).
I also took away ice cream sandesh at 15 a piece. Everyone in our family was wowed by this. It was so light and melt in your mouth. You got to have it.
After an early morning darshan at Dakshineswar temple, we stopped by here for a quick breakfast enroute to our residence.
A small shop, easily missed in the hustle of Shyam Bazaar, Haridas Modak is a very popular sweet shop in the area. For breakfast we feasted on freshly fried Kochuris and Aloo sabzi made in typical Bangla style and served on a banana leaf.
The Kochuris and sabzi keep flowing till you ask them to stop! We topped it up with Mishti Doi prepared in earthern kulhads.
Amazing breakfast, a smiling host, old world charm at very very pocket friendly prices. What more can one ask for?
And did I mention that they primarily are a sweet shop serving a delectable range of Bengali sweets?

One of the oldest sweet shop in shaymbazar five point crossing.....
Very popular shop for kachuri and Misti.
Here they serve you in bana leaf (kolapata) .
Luchi torkari is very famous...
Recently taste the "gajore halua sandesh" it's awesome..👌
Besides Golbarir kosha mangsho and The statue of Netaji, Shyambazar is known for another reason for HARIDAS MODOK. The best place for having luchi or kochuri with the mysteriously good alur torkari.
A 3star for keeping the nostalgia alive throughout this many years... Probably one of the very few places to serve food on a banana leaf.. It adds an unique blend to the food overall...
Apart from the nostalgia part.. This place serves meal at as low as 17rs.. The ones working here r polite and service is quite quick to be honest.
A must visit and eat for the fans of nostalgic Calcutta in the modern era.
Located in the Shyambazar 5-point crossing, they claim to be a 250-year-old shop.
The ambience is like a typical old Bangali restaurant.
I took luchi and aloo-tarkari along with a nice-looking sweet, which they call bedana(Pomegranate) sweet. Food including the sweet was decent in taste.
Coming to Price, it is on the lower side as you might expect from the old and gold Bangali shop.
My college was in Shyambazar,so basically during my return to home most of the time I used to have Kochuri and aloor torkari.
After Longtime today in the morning
We had Nolengurer Rossogola,Kochuri with Aloor torkari and Goja.
My favourite among all these 3 was Nolengurer Rossogola💓👌
Price is reasonable.
Overall experience 👍👍👍👍
A 250 years old eatry run by their 6th generation. Famous for their luchi, kochuri and bengali sweets.
If you love heritage, old kolkata flavours, then please come here. Still they are serving luchi and aloo r torkari on banana leaf. But don't expect any fine dine here. They kept there joint as it was 50years ago.
The owner was saying personalities like Shri Ramkrishna, Ma Sarada, Rani Rashmani, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Abinnidranath Tagore used to come here.
The quality of there sandesh is good. Specially which I love , is there designs. Those they are changing day by day.
If you go there after 7 in the evening, you can get hot rosogolla.
This is my detailed work. Please check this

Super Luchi with sabji. They serve potato sabji and potatoes are with skin. This sabji is assoum. It is a healthy breakfast or snack item for us. When ever you go to shyambazar 5 point crossing, please visit here and taste it. 😙
This is the most nostalgic luchi/ kachuri joint in entire Kolkata. U can find this century old popular food joint on shyambazar 5 point crossing.
Love the way they present luchi on a piece of banana leaf. Am a big fan of this joint since childhood. Something never changed about this restro like shabby old wall and wooden benches and unpeeled potato curry, their signature dish. They serve whole lot of potato curry to go with luchi.
Last but not the least do try their sweets, specially Ragvog and chanar jilipi. Still if you some place left in your stomach, order 100gm of misti dahi.
Luchi Rs 6/pc
Big Rajvog Rs 10/pc
Sweet curd Rs 16/100gm
It's a very old sweet meat shop located just at the crossing of Shyambazar which also serves luchi & kachauri but their speciality is they serve luchir and kachauri on banana leaf. One can see the age old tables here.
More than a century old confectioners ... This is located at the Shyam bazaar five point crossing towards R.G. KAR Hospital.... They have a good collection of Bengali sweets and savouries...
One of their best selling item is LUCHI n ALUR TODKARI .....and the special part is that they serve it on banana leaf....which enhances the taste...
Recently I have visited one of the oldest food joints in North Kolkata. It was once a popular hangout areas of eminent Bengalis. We have tried Luchi & Sabji as a kind of stop gap. It was awesome in taste served on banana leaf which will dip you in the Indian tradition. There are two outlets one in the name of Haridas Modak & the other as Adi Haridas Modak. So if you by any chance visit Shyambazar and if you are hungry then definitely it will be a good deal.
I used to come almost regularly , may be from 1956 for the delicious combo Luchi +Aloor sabji one plate was enough as I was just a little boy coming from Paikpara not by D’decker Bus but crossing Talah Bridge on foot saving B’fare to buy some fish items on Mom’s order from the big Bazaar opp. Shop . That saved Bus fare was only for this delicious Luchi dish. Even in my college days I was a frequenter to this shop. Later I left Calcutta for Tech Education & had been posted in many big cities of India in my whole service periods but I could never get this dish any where even in Calcutta till date. Hats off to the owner of this eatery. Now, I’m back to this city but put up in S’kolkata & my mobility is very restricted by Doctor’s cautions. Still I’ll try.

One of the oldest sweet shops in Kolkata.Located in the heart of Old North Kolkata which is Shyambazar..When you visit these outlets you feel you have travelled to a bygone era..Amazing Luchi and Aloor Tarkari..I have also had their Cholar Daal..It is very cheap yet tastes amazing.
Yes, if you love to enjoy the taste of real Bengali Luchi (puri) and aloor torkari then this is the place for you. Unmatchable, unparallel. It's a very old shop with old style sitting facilities. But the Luchi torkari served in kolapata is just heavenly.
Heard a lot about this shop, finally visited today. A small shop absolutely old no fancy in it. The things which amazed me are the filling of Kochuri and the material used for serving kochuri torkari. They serve kochuri in fresh Banana Leaf or kola pata which is very much rare as it's kind of heritage as it's a very very old way of serving food but serving in banana leaf or kolapata is common in southern part of India. Now the kochuri it's not like the kochuri I am used to in South Calcutta where I live. The filling of kochuri in North Calcutta is made of Grinded Urad or Biuli dal mixed spices and obviously Hing or asafoetida but in south calcutta the filling is made of Sattu. And the torkari of this shop is jacketed potato curry or in bengali khosa sudhdhu alur torkari, which is more like home cooked with panch phoron, turmeric or holud and green chilies and hint of sweetness in it makes it appealing. Bought traditional bengali sweet Chomchom for my family. Service is prompt and everything is reasonably priced.
The Tradition of North Kolkata Breakfast is well carried by Haridas Modak! Ever since a kid, I had been coming to this place for my weekend morning breakfast! The location is easily accessible from all corners of Kolkata! It is well connected by metro as well. It's a little shop hidden among the big hoardings of Shyambazar 5 Point More. It will be on your right when you from the 5 Point towards Belgachhia.
They have a remarkably small menu but that's enough to suffice any "Khadyo Roshik Bangali" i.e. Foodie Bong, like me! you will love the Luchi and Kochuri with chholar daal or Alur Torkari! These are my personal favourites as well! The oily fluffly kochuri or luchi are made just meant to make your day. The potato curry with jacket potato and special bong spices will definitely make your morning mood!
The best part is that they serve you in fresh banana leaf! That's the tradition that keeps the Old Kolkata feel ignited! The shop is not well furnished or decorated! So if you ask about the ambience, it's completely in a bad shape! but somehow, I don't want to see a renovation is this shop! The food they serve goes perfectly with their surrounding! So if you are a snob, this is not the place for you, I am sorry...
The sumptuous Bong Breakfast is incomplete without the dessert. They have a small menu of sweets too but whatever they have, you are bound to love! the Chhanar Jalebi, Shor Bhaja, Kheer Kodomb or Chomchom! Each one has a charm of it's own! I prefer to have all of them! So now you know how big a foodie I am!
Please do visit this place atleast once in your life time, else you will be missing out a big part on being a Bong!

Nice but small joint near five point crossing at shyam bazar. Ghee r luchi and khoshawala alur torkari at kolapata just awesome. Chanar murki, nikhuti, rosgolla, singara all are good.
An old & famous shop in north Calcutta . Conveniently located at the Shyambazar 5 point crossing this shop has good quality sweets as well as kachoris . I have been a regular visitor here & they continue to amaze me each time .
Near the Shyambazar five point... They serve delicious Luchi , alur dom , cholar dal... Nolengur er sondesh and rosogolla is also very tasty...
Situated in shyam bazar main road crossing. Sweet shop which also give bengoli thali to taste. Decent sized outlet with sitting arrangement. Ambience was good and so as hospitality. Quick service and pocket friendly price. I tried their nolen gur sandesh which was heavenly delicious in taste. Loved the dessert and become the fan of nolen gur flavor. Must try place highly recommended.
Luchi cholar dal in Kolapata. Taste of vintage kolkata. This place is still maintaining the age old tradition of a bangali breakfast. Love the place more for what it is. The taste though has deteriorated over the years a bit.
At one corner of the Shyambazar five point crossing is located this heritage sweet seller. Tried out few of their sweets. Each were very good in taste. I tried their Kaju barfi , Rosogolla and Lancha. All of them were very good.
Sweets are always my favourite and whenever i make a visit in shyambazar area i try to visit this place also. Located at the five point crossing in shyambazar. Famous for authentic bengali sweets and puri with cholar dal (A must try). They serve on banana leaves which is really good. Nolen gurer snadesh are mouth watering. Pocket friendly sweet shop with quality sweets.
Haridas Modak is a vintage sweet confectionary located near Shyambazar five point crossing.
Service is quick with pure Bangaliana ambience.
Tried their Kochuri-torkari, which was served on a banana leaf was very tasty and light. A must try.
Their Pantua, Kajuborfi were fresh and good too.
Pocket pinch is economical.
At the corner of Shyambazar Junction, this sweet seller is one of the oldest here. Sweets quality are very good and prices are damn cheap here. Visited here and tried out few Sandesh, Kaju Bari. Each of their item were made with perfection.
Among those few restaurants which are still running on "Nostalgia" definitely Haridas Modak is one of them. A pure veg place where you can have luchi, kochuri, aloor dum, different type of sweets at a very low cost. I still remember my high school days when me and my wife(formerly girlfriend) used to drop in here for the luchi aloordum. They used to have a nice tap with sensor to wash ur hands after you are done, which on my recent visit I could not find. Things change but the taste of food is a genuine legacy.
This restaurant situated at the five point crossing, Shyambazar, Kolkata is a landmark in that area. It is famous for two things- one is traditional bengali sweets and LOOCHI and CHHOLAR DAAL .(RADHABALLAVI / TORKARI) served on banana leaves, they will leave you detached from reality for moments by their fabulous taste. you may find it difficult to stop once you are at the table. And do not forget to try another delicacy- BODE.
Went there yesterday..Ate their special kachoori and rosogolla..the taste of kachoori was really nice..It is undoubtedly one of the best sweet shop in Kolkata, will visit again very soon...
One of the many places in North Kolkata to get a good sweet craving satisfied. Come in the morning and delve into the famous kachori and aloo sabzi. The sweets are innovative and priced okay. Good paneer is available here but a bit costly. Get the paneer chop it's just amazing.
The quality of sweets are really awesome.......they always serve good and fresh sweets...... really love their sweets............old famous......
Been here for Sasthi pure vegetarian lunch today i.e. 07/10/2016.
Before mentioning the good sides... Let me get to the cons first.... Very scarce of place... Uncomfortable seats... Lack of hygine n cleanliness..
But their proper luchi. .. just fabulous... So thin n tasty.... N they serve on Banana leaves... Following our old bengali tradition.
Besides.. the sweets are also of good quality.. n pocket friendly.. I took paantua-dorbeah-kheerkodom.
One of the oldest & legendary sweet shops in Kolkata.. First heard it's name form my Dad about its awesome Yogurt & Kochuri Torkari... So 1ce and then a few times went there to taste their Yogurt & Kochuri.
YOGURT: It was truly awesome with thick layer of cream on top and the sweetness was exact for once palette.
The Kochuri & Torkari: Was also good and was good for price the taste was also nice though the size was not satisfactory to my needs but its taste covered it.
Also had langcha and some other sweets which was good but not remarkable enough.
Liked there way of serving on banana leaf which is a bit different approach.
The Ambience is poor and its very claustrophobic and the place is in real need of renovation...😑

Why should one visit this small sweet shop in Shyambazar five point? Because of their delicious and authentic 'kochuri-sabzi', 'talsansh sondesh'', 'langcha', 'kalakand'; unique serving of food over 'kolapata'; well behaved and helpful staffs and the charm of old north Kolkata eatery.
Why shouldn't one visit it? Unhygienic kitchen, dirty looks.
Nostalgia is attached to this place, I wish it to be more clean, nice and hygienic.
Everyone says this place is famous for it's kachori, cholar dal and other bengali snacks. Haven't tried any yet but need to soon.
All I've had from here is their Talshash sandesh and I'll say it's really good for such a shop. By such a shop I mean not at all fancy but ya it has the old Kolkata charm in it.

Located at 5 point crossing, this is a legendary place, mostly popular for their exceptional sweets and sabji-kachoris. Fluffy Kachoris served with a potato sabji upon a clean banana leaf. The kochuris easily melt in your mouth and the sabji stands as a perfect accompaniment. End your meal with some delicious sweets, and you wouldn't even feel the pocket pinch. Try this place, if you are near Shyambazar 5 point crossing.
An old sweet shop from the old Kolkata diaries still carries on the legacy with them is Haridas Modak.
They have been truly justifying the real Bengali sweets taste and quality. Must try is the Talersash sandesh and other Nolen Gur er sandesh in winter. Also the Singara is one of the popular one and in snacks Kachori with cholar dal is quite a good option for breakfast as well.
Note: My previous review got deleted automatically due to some issue so its a repost.
Date Of Visit : 12/03/2016
The Place &Location : Exactly on the 5 Poing crossing of Shyambazar. This shop is very difficult to see from road because of the hawkers who placed their stalls on the footpath itself so its hidden behind it. Its a tradational place and still continuing its popularity by serving quality food and desserts. It is built in a small area which has hardly seating capacity of approx 10 heads inside. In this modern world they still follow the authentic way of serving food to customers. If you are wishing to have Kachori at this joint then you will be really surprised to see that they will serve the items in square Banana leaf. Apart from this they sell awesome desserts with high quality and have that tradational touch in it. One of the oldest sweet shop in the city and still offering more day by day. The only thing they need to think about is renovating the place, as because it looks very darkish at some points.
The Food &Dessert : On my visit to this place i tried two items for a evening snack. Those items are 1. Kachori with Sabji& 2.RasMalai.
1. Kachori With Sabji : The surprising way of serving the food in Banana Leaf looks great. The Kachori served was hot and the sabji given has the potatos with skin on it. The Kachori was so soft that it melted in my mouth when i took it in. Sabji gave the perfect support with kachori and both tasted awesome in combination. I felt that salt is less in sabji but after having few bites it seemed ok to me. The quality of the items was nice, properly cooked and the quantity leveled the price equally. The service was also good and fast. Must try this if you are hungry and in shyambazar area... My Rating 3.5/5
2. RasMalai : One of the most loved sweet by people. Normally the Malai part should be soft enough so that it could easily be teared, but on my visit it was bit hard to tear into halves. The prersentation was looking nice and the colour of this dessert was attractive. Thougi was not so satisfied with it. The Ras was very nice, it was low in sugar and anyone could have it even the diabieties patients too. Overall the item was good but less satisfactory.. My Rating : 3/5
Overall Experience &Recommencation : Very few old sweet shops are exiusting in city today and its on of those. Maintaining its reputation from somany years it very difficult and serving the same quality too. But this place has carried both in nice fashion. The place may look awkward if you see inside where they cook but one thing i must say that they provide good taste. This place is reasonable and give good taste of kolkata's Kachori and sabji. Must try this place if nearby.
Went in here for a quick breakfast on the way from Dakhsineswar on a calm summer morning. The hot kochuris and hot torkari served on freshly-washed banana leaf were simply awesome and very appetising. They had served some of the finest and tastiest kochuris I've ever tasted. An old shop, one can try out their kochuris or sweets surely for once.
Squeaky clean banana leaf, two fluffy kachoris and a ladle of aloor torkari. A side of sweets at the end of your meal. Take your pick from a considerable range of authentic bangali mishtis. The sheer bliss of nostalgia really....
I remember noticing this tiny roadside sweet shop the first day of my college while going home. Starving, I went in. Although looking back now, I realize that I actually would have preferred a not so shabby shack at that time, I'm glad that I didn't. No matter how big we grow, or how heavy our wallets get, some simple things pull us closer to the roots- and such things are always worth holding on to.
Bengalis crave for luchis and potato curry.
This is the place serving such Bengalis since eternity.
Very authentic way of offering of food.
Sweets are also good.
Excellent , just one word... For 'haridas modak' the presentation in banana leaf adds to the flavour of the dish. I ate luchi and hot aalur torkari, it was yummy and guys do try the chanar jalebi , it melts in ur mouth...
I love this place old hotel . I love to eat there kochuri and luchi. And I love their service. I also love there potato sabji that they serves with kochuri. I love to be there
Just had a wonderful meal of authentic luchi and aloo tarkari. Must say it's rare now days to find shops serving food true to its roots. Both luchi and tarkari tasted the way it should have. Highly recommended.

Hell of a gem this place is!! Easy fillng and pocket friendly and heaven for taste buds ..
Be it the kochuri torkari or Misti or my favorite khirer laddu ...
U can close ur eyes and take your pick..
Traditional "Luchi and Alur Torkari" taste soo good, that you will forget all other fast food available there.. They serve Luchi and Torkari on banana leaf, that is "kola pata".. Looks so authentic..
This vintage north kolkata eatery..luchi..kochuri...sobji with misti..awesome..lot of childhood memories..been here with my dad when i was small... Ate here after many yrs...taste is still the same... Typical bangla breakfast...
Haridas Modak is one known name in North Kolkata. Their "kochuri-alur torkari" is to die for. The piping hot singaras are enough to give you foodgasm and their docile, juicy roshogollas are a must try! Modak is another name for tradition. Cheap in price, high in quality. Do foodies want anything else?
I am very nostalgic about this small old sweet shop ....I am going there since childhood for its luchi torkari and pantua or rasgulla.....I also like their service...
A good place to have breakfast and end it with a sweet. Kachori and aloo sabzi is good and so is gulab jamun and rasgola. Also the service is nice as they keep asking if you need more sabzi and stuff.
'Haridas Modak' is one of the old sweet shop in kolkata. It is located at Shyambazar five point crossing.I had been there few times.I loved their singara. This is tasty, specially the aloo masala of singara. It is very tasty.Their Taal saash is also good taste.price is reasonable. It is one of the popular sweet shop at shyambazar area.
The hot luchi and aloor tarkari served on kolapata... its the best essence of old Kolkata captured for u for breakfast... the channa r chop are sensational... and so are the saandesh, dorbesh and the chomchoms... its a piece of my childhood I love
This place actually has 3 divisions...an old-fashioned sweet outlet,a newer one,and a small eating area.
The hot luchis and the aloo curry is really a welcome sight after tiring walks nearby. They serve on pieces of cut banana leaves.
The best part is that the food is fresh and tasty. The mithais they sell are also bery good, especially the array ofnolen gurer sondesh in winters. The talsaash is also worth a double-take. And i also have the kalo-jaam because it is a personal favourite of mine.
Now the lists of all the mishtis i've ever had here is quite long and hence unfeasible...so i suggest you to go and find out for itself the ones you like.
Went there with a colleague as he recommended this for their tradition....luchi & cholar dal-that's what he recommended....food was okay enough (nothing extraordinary)....then we took some sweets (names forgotten)- those are also okay....if you are in shyambazar & need a quick snacks go there but nothing to be excited....
I haven't count how many times I have gone there and the delicious kochuri. This shop is not very far away from my home. The sweets are awesome. If u come near shyambazar u must go there. You will not feel the sunday if you dont have hot kochuri , alur torkari , langcha and talsash on sunday morning..
been there ate that. is what i would say :D
if you are sweet toothed person do not miss the gulab jamun and the famous luchi and alur torkari given here
the shop may not give much attraction to eyes but once you try out the gulab jamun given to after the a healty luchi torkari given its taste stick in your tongue for pretty long hours thats what makes this sweet shop a must visit if you ever comming to shyambazar to for some casual hangout and light dining this sweet shop is the one you shouldn't miss
One of the Oldest and best sweet selling shops in Shyambazaar area of Kolkata.
I would hop into this place for some luchi and cholar dal for breakfast.
For my sweet-tooth I would dig in for the rasagollas of this place. It is so sweet that gulping down 10 of them at one go,seems like a click away.
If you're visiting this place you must have the rosomalai as well. The malai is simply great in taste and adds to the quintessential part of the Bengali Sweet Culture of Calcutta.
The hot luchis n the cholar daal.. the luchi n the hot alur torkari.. the lyencha.. the taalshash. The kalakand. N the list continues. I love all.
Located in Shyambazar crossing this place is a heritage of North Kolkata. A vintage sweet shop carrying on with its tradition with sweets and snacks
haridas modak's sweets has been a famous one for decades..it has been carrying on with it its tradition..located at the shyambazar crossing it attracts people for its awesome sweets and snacks..
their luchi and cholar dal is a speciality even kachori and samosas are good...apart from the snacks its sweets has the samw taste for generations..am a fan of their kalakand and lengcha..which is mouth watering..their kaju barfi and talsash is also delicious..
i have been visiting this place with baba..and love their sweets and snacks ...servers are pretty friendly and fast ..i really like this place..
I have been visting this place since my childhood for morning breakfasts. According to me it serves one of the best traditional bengali luchi and chana daal on a banana leaf. The taste and quality is still the same from last 20 years. Dont judge the place by its looks or hygiene or ambiance as it will not amuse you but trust me the luchi and chana daal is to die for. Luchi costs Rs 4/- per piece.
P.S.- The luchi with chana daal is only served in the morning at it generally is finished by 11 am. so if you wana have it then go there early
Come here for the mishti, but also come here for the luchi. They are amazing.
very tasty kachori renowned from a long time..good quality bengali sweets ...price is competetive ...its basically a sweet shop not a restaurant ..
A very famous shop in North Kolkata, Ado Haridas Modak, which is over 250 years old.. This is one of the best places in Kolkata to have a Bengali breakfast (Kochuri or Luchi)
It is my favourite kochuri destination and i frequently visit this place.
In the morning till 10:30am you will get Kochuri (12rs per piece) with chholar daal, which i highly recommend. It is purely delicious.
From 11am till 9pm they serve Luchi (10rs per piece) with authentic Bengali Alur Torkari..
You first have to take one plate (which consists 3 pieces, either 36rs for 3 Kochuri or 30rs for 3 Luchi depending upon the time) and then you can order single piece... The taste is amazing! They also sell sweets which again, i will recommend you to have after you have completed your breakfast.
Another good thing about this place is that, they serve food in Banana leaves. No plates, just banana leaf which is a Bengali tradition.
Must try!
It is just a 2min walk from Shyambazar metro station gate no. 1. The place is situated on the left side of RG Kar Road.. Right at the crossing of Shyambazar, you will find two shops of Haridas Modak. Make sure that you enter the shop that looks old and worn out --- Adi Haridas Modak. The hall with a few wooden tables, benches offer an old-world charm which is hardly present in the city these days due to the new-found glamorous café culture. It is a very famous shop, so nobody would have in trouble finding it..
One of the iconic outlets which serves the best luchi/kochuri with dal torkari. The potatoes aren't peeled to remove the outer skin yet the sabji tasted delectable. It boasts of legends visiting the place in the bygone era and one can see the pictures of Ramkrishna Paramhansa, Netaji and many others on the walls. They have a good collection of sweets. I personally loved their rajbhog and gajar er sandesh. The place is just opposite Shyambazar golbari. It opens around 8a.m. We reached around 7:55 and in 5 mins, 3 tables were occupied. Kochuri torkari is priced at 36 rs per plate (contains 3 kochuri) while luchi torkari is at 30 rs per plate. Extra kochuri is of 12 rs while extra luchi is 10 rs per piece. I loved exploring the nearby areas full of ancient houses as well.
This 200 year old place serving one of the best luchi in town.. their food is delicious.. fast service.. per plate cost 30 rupees..and we also tried their misti doi that was heavenly delicious
One of the heritage places of North Kolkata for breakfast. They are well known for their kochuri and chanar jilipi served on banana leaf. The quality is top notch. Service is prompt. Reach there as early as possible to avoid crowd. The shop opens at 6am. They serve a variety of sweets as well. Recommended for all food lovers.
I recently visited Adi Haridas Modak, an Indian sweets shop located in Shyambazar, Kolkata, and had a mixed experience. The highlight of my visit was the breakfast, particularly the kachori and Daal served in a traditional manner on a Banana leaf. It was a delightful experience and truly showcased the shop's specialty in serving unique and authentic dishes.
However, one downside of this place is its small size, which often leads to long queues, especially on Sundays. Finding a place to sit can be quite challenging, so I would highly recommend arriving early in the morning to avoid any inconvenience.
Another issue I encountered was the lack of parking facilities in front of the shop. Whether you're on a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler, finding a parking spot nearby can be a hassle.
While the breakfast experience was excellent, I found the variety of sweets offered to be underwhelming. The quality and taste did not live up to my expectations, especially considering the reputation of the shop.
On the positive side, the staff was friendly and attentive, providing good service despite the crowded environment.
In conclusion, Adi Haridas Modak is a great place for a delicious breakfast with their specialty kachori and Daal served on a Banana leaf. However, the limited seating, long queues, and lack of parking facilities can be a drawback. If you're primarily interested in sweets, you may want to explore other options in the area.
Labelled as the India’s oldest breakfast joint which is around 250Years old, well known for its sweets and Kochuri.
Situated at the famous Shyambazar 5 point crossing.
We went there on a busy Sunday morning at around 9:30. We had to wait for somewhat 10-15 mins for our turn to munch on their famous Kochuri and sweets.
After finally settling down, we were served with Kochuri and sabzi on Banana leaf. The staff were too generous and polite to everyone.
The Kochuri had dal stuffing in it though it was fried but it seemed very light that shows the cooking oil being used is top notch.
Since we were considered late to the shop we were served with alu sabzi instead of dal. The alu sabzi was slightly sweetish (which is you are going to get at a sweet shop run by Bengalis) but delicious. And finally in the end the server also brought some sweets like Chenar(cottage cheese) jalebi, Kalajamun, Nolen Gur (Dates Jaggery) Rosogolla.
Better to visit at 8AM though it would be crowded but it’s worth the wait. 😍
The price per piece of Kochuri is 12/- and rates of sweets vary from 10/- starting.
Authentic Bengali Breakfast in Old Kolkata style. Kochuri and Sabzi served here along with various delicious sweets in Banana leaf…
The food quality is good authentic taste.. Mithai was little sweet for me..
Staff behaviour is so good and polite..
Price is also reasonable.. ₹12 per Kochuri and they serve 3pcs in plate..
very good and recommended.
250 yrs old joint serving lip smacking kachuris and sweets. Nostly crowded during brkfst hours. If u r planning a visit better to reach early. The shop ipens @ 8 am.
Heritage cafe for Bengali light snacks and sweets.
Location is at Shyambazar five-point crossing, just opposite Golbari Kosha Mangsho.
Had excellent Kochuri (with dal stuffing) served with unlimited Cholar Dal with Alu. Minimum 3 pcs Kochuri to be given as initial order, and subsequently single piece can be ordered. Each Kochuri with Dal costs Rs 12.
Sweets were of very good quality, soft and perfectly sweet.
Service was very prompt.
Value for money, and fabulous taste.
Highly recommended!
Located on the busy streets of Shyambazar 5 point crossing, this restaurant is said to be over 200 years old. They serve food in a traditional bengali way. You will get your food served on a Banana leaf. People mostly visit this place for breakfast. The most famous are Kachori, Chana dal and sweets. We went there for breakfast and ordered the same. In sweets we tried 'Kalo Jaam' or 'Kala Jamun'. If you want to explore traditional restaurants of Kolkata and try street foods, you can come here.
Went on a Sunday Morning, found people waiting in queue to occupy the seats..
Kochuri is good...but overpriced...Also they said dal is finished(at morning 9am)...so they served us only the aalu torkari..
Sweets are also overpriced and did not meet my expectation
Suggestion...There is no parking space ...so just arrange accordingly
Heritage place well situated at Shyambazar 5 point crossing, started as a modest sweet shop, but gained popularity for serving luchi/kochuri with aloo torkari on banana leafs. The signature aloo torkari also has its skin unpeeled, that enhances the flavor of the combo even more. This historic place has received multiple awards and recognition from different TV shows, and have appeared on esteemed newspapers. But for a few years from now, they've raised the prices to an exorbitant rate, 1 luchi costs Rs.10, 1 kochuri costs Rs.12 now. The only saving grace is that they still give you unlimited sides, and also the signature taste hasn't been destroyed yet. I'd recommend this place for people looking for an age-old authentic Bengali experience, as I've many fond memories of coming here in my childhood.
Adi Haridas Modak completing 250 years. Authentic Bengali breakfast. Luchi, Kochuri with Alur Tarkari, Cholar Dal. Another heritage store in Kolkata. It's actually famous for breakfast. They serve breakfast in a Banana Leaf. In the morning they give you Kochuri and Cholar Dal. After 12 Pm they serve Luchi and Alur Tarkari. Kochuri Rs. 12/ piece, Luchi Rs. 10/ piece, Pantua Rs. 10/ piece.
They serve breakfast in Banana Leaf is very unique. Every item is very tasty. But, the space is very small.
The nearest metro station is Shyam Bazar Metro.
We must visit such traditional shops now and then, which may be not have a sofistic getup but they have traditional food flavour. I like their preparation and traditional sweets still maintained today in the heart of North Kolkata.
Quite a unique experience depicting the heritage of traditional bengali cuisine and eatiries in North calcutta. The luchi and alu torkari were delectable and pocket friendly. It is truly one of the finest I have ever tasted in Kolkata.
Almost 250 years old shop in North Kolkata.. Very Tasty Food.. Kochuri and Khosawala Alur Tarkari is the most popular dish in here.. You can take sweets (e.g. rosogolla, chanar jilipi and kheer kadam) with this.. Service is very good.. Pocket Friendly Price..
