Indian Fast Food @ Mission Cafe, Golpark, Kolkata ☺
Chandni Chowk based Mission Cafe is the age old and popular comfort food eatery, primarily famous for it's Dry Chana & Kulcha and other Indian dishes. With time, this solo restaurant has spanned into 5 different outlets. Golpark based Mission Cafe is one of it's franchise. Decored in simple and straight lines, this outlet is air conditioned and equipped with a selfie corner!
How to reach Mission Cafe, Golpark?
If you are coming from Gariahat flyover, then you need to move straight from Golpark Crossing. Shortly, you will see Kotak Mahindra Bank on your left hand side, followed by a bus stand. Just take the adjacent left turn and soon you will reach the gates of Mission Cafe, Golpark.
The restaurant uses it's ground floor space as the take away counter, while the actual restaurant is located on the first floor.
Scheduled to complete it's 4th year this coming Durga Puja, this 30 seater eatery is a boon to the vegetarian inhabitants of Golpark, Ballygunge and other surrounding areas, as there is a serious dearth of pure veg eateries therein. No wonder that the restaurant's take away service is as popular as it's sit in service!
The restaurant menu comprises of - Beverages, Refreshing Shakes, Scrumptious Grilled Sandwiches, Mouth Watering Indian Snacks, Delicious Indian, Breads/Papad/Salad, Tempting Tandoor, Tandoor Breads, Yummy South Indian, Exciting Chinese and Desserts. Tandoor based items are served post 6 pm.
The items presented for tasting were -
- Strawberry Shake and Pineapple Punch (Rs. 100/- each): Both the milk based beverages were served in tall glasses. I tasted the former one. It was flavorsome, nice and filling.
- Chana Kulcha (Rs. 150/-) and Chola Bhatura (Rs. 150/-): As already mentioned before, Chana Kulcha, the dry version, is a staple favourite of Mission Cafe outlets. Herein, the management has alongside introduced it's own gravy based version of the same dish, called Chola Bhatura.
Both the aforesaid versions of Chana/Chola were presented in elongated steel bowls, along with an accompanying Bhatura, Salad and Pickle. The Salad comprised of onion and cucumber ringlets, a slice of lime and one green chilli.
The Bhatura or Kulcha were well fried, big sized and fluffy. Both the versions of Chana/Chola tasted distinct but equally nice. However, the dry version had a relatively generous sprinkling of amchoor. Some may prefer it, while some may not.
- Vada Pav (Rs. 40/-): A solitary Vada Pav was served with small servings of Green Chutney & Garlic Chutney and two tempered green chillies (chaunki hui hari mirch), on a circular yellow melamine dish.
Herein, Burger Bun was used instead of Pav Bun. Thus, the resultant dish was relatively bigger and wholesome in size. It tasted good but not like the ones you get on the streets of Mumbai. The solace lies in the fact that, Mumbai style Vada Pavs are not available anywhere in the city.
- Oriental Noodle Dosa (Rs. 130/-): As per it's name, this fusion Dosa came stuffed with a generous filling of stir fried onion ringlets, noodles and some green chutney.
The Dosa was crisp and the noodles were well cooked. The accompanying Sambhar and Coconut Chutney were also nice. This dish was served in steel utensils and it tasted very good.
- Achari Paneer Tikka (Rs. 180/-): In actuality, this dish comprises of 4 portions, but I called for only 1 for tasting. So, a solitary big square chunk of marinated and tandoor cooked Paneer or Cottage Cheese was served on a bed of onion ringlets, accompanied with a slice of lime and solitary slices of tandoor cooked tomato and capsicum ringlets. A bowl of Green Chutney was served as the condiment.
The Paneer chunk was fresh and dense in composition. Onion ringlets were soaked in lime juice and chaat masala. Overall, the dish along with it's condiment tasted quite nice.
However, I advised them to increase the quantity of marination and provide some sort of filling in a slit on the Paneer chunk. Apparently, the paneer pieces are now slitted and cooked with a dash of cheese in between! They must be tasting yum!
- Luchi & Aloo Dum: Two fluffy and uniformly fried Luchis were served with an onion rich preparation of dry and spicy Aloo Dum.
This combo tasted excellent. But it was not a part of their daily menu, rather one of their popular bulk order preparations!
The restaurant is quite flexible in undertaking bulk delivery orders. Apart from their usual menu items, they also undertake orders for a host of Chaats like - Papri chat, Raj Kachori, Sev Puri, Tikia Chola etc.
The minimum quantity required to place bulk orders is around 10 plates. One needs to contact the outlet for customization and rates.
The restaurant also provides corporate lunches and evening snacks to nearby office units, as well as, carefully packaged food parcels for travelling folks.
Last but not the least, they can create your entire order, sans onion and/or garlic, upon request.
