This south Indian food joint is quite old and extremely popular among people living in behala..there's no hi-fi seating arrangements neither it's air conditioned but always over crowded and people over there are always busy in either serving their customers or preparing something for parcel.
Masala dosa,cheese masala dosa,onion dosa,dahi vada,idli or whatever they prepare is good,need a little improvement though..they don't take much time to serve instead of having a heavy rush almost all the time..price totally reasonable. This place 'll never disappoint your tummy ☺

No kidding but I do like South Indian sometimes. Thinking of the sambar and rasam makes my mouth watery🙈 It's a small congested place but the service is the quickest of all. Been there many times, specially while passing by Ashoka Cinema.
Would love to recommend a few items :
1. Butter onion masala uttapam, aloo vada (these two are their specialty)
2. Do try their dosas too. The dosa is crispy, the inner aloo filling is appropriate with the right amount of masala. The chutney has a distinctive flavour of coconut and curry leaves.
All in all, the food is bang on!
I went yesterday with my mother, and ordered a plain onion dosa for me, and idly for her. The guy taking the order made a mistake and gave me a masala dosa instead of a plain dosa. The dosa itself was good, however the combination withh onion is not recommended. A plate of idly consists of 2 idlys, which were well cooked. Chutney and sambar were served with both dishes. The food is pretty good, a drawback is the space and hygiene of the place. The place is in urgent need of renovation and expansion. The space between two rows of seats is barely one person wide, and that caused a congestion of people entering and leaving. Considering rush hour, the food was served in about 5-10 minutes, which can be said to be pretty good.
Located beside asoka cinema hall so its very easy to locate and to grab a snack before going in or coming out of the movie. Got bike parking on the front(parking is not theirs but easy to keep an eye on while enjoying food).
Service persons are promt and polite. Order doesn't take too long to show up. Food is good along with ita price tag.
A to-go restaurant for some great south indian food. We tried a plethora of dishes. The best of them were the fusion dishes, onion dosa and idli. Must try. Totally recommended.

The best around the locality. U will never regret being there. Their service are very prompt. During lunch time you may have to wait for 10-15minutes to get a seat. My recommendation is to go for any kind of dosa .

This cafe started even before I was born and the taste of their food is amazing. You don't go there for a great ambience of modern civilization but an awesome place to have the best south indian food and maybe see the old culture of Kolkata.
I will again go there soon and try something new.

This is a very old place and one of my favourite south Indian restaurant. I remember my childhood days, when, I used to go there with my elder sister. It was a great place to have a such authentic taste of south Indian.... Specially they kept their quality same as before. Nowadays this place become one of my choice for lunch or tiffin with my friends. If you don't check this place, then hurry 😋😋😋😋
This place has been my favourite since I was a little kid. The Butter onion Sada Dosa is my personal choice, but the other dosas are also very enticing. Recently the service and the quality of food has declined. Nevertheless it's a great place to hangout and I hope you guys may enjoy it the way I have.
Been eating here for almost three decades. All the cooks and waiters are Oriya and the dishes are prepared to suit the local palate. Everything is super tasty, no choosing the best. The quality and quantity provided for the price paid are unmatchable.
P.S, I'm seeing many people are complaining about soggy masala dosas, must be happening in case they're taking home. Ask them to pack the dosa in paper and masala in banana leaf, separately.

Uttapam is prepared with less oil and sourness of batter is balanced tht gives delightful taste. Best served with its special Chutney and Sambar.
Consistency is the middle name of United Cafe which has been beside Asoka Cinema for ages now (so not really new anymore). You can't get crispier dosa or more coconutty chutney anywhere else. And I have eaten dosa across the country. Also, don't think this place will ever run out of banana leaves, making this joint even more authentically south Indian I guess. Thank you United Cafe for forming my earliest memories of paper masala dosa, onion utthapam, sada vada, dahi vada and that super vegetarian polao that my 91-year old grandmother still digs. Though I am not a big fan of South Indian Cuisine , but United Cafe is what comes to my mind, when I think of South Indian Cuisine in Kolkata. I have been quite a few times here. Being a holiday on 2nd October, we had a sudden plan to visit Ibiza The Fern Resort from Kolkata. Travelling there from Rajarhat, we reached New Alipore, Behala region at around 9am. Since we started early, we had plans of having breakfast in behala region only.
Going quickly through Zomato for list of snacks joints open at this time, we decided to visit this South Indian outlet "New United Cafe". Located on the Diamond Harbour Road, once we reached the food joint, we were not much convinced with the outside looks of the restaurant. Anyway, we entered and took a table.
Quickly going through the menu we ordered Masala Dosa, Butter Masala Dosa, Plain Dosa, Sambar Bara and Idli for 6 of us. Once the food came and we started eating, we understood tht outside looks and appearance can fool u totally!! The food ws excellent with authentic south indian taste. The sambar and coconut chutney tasted awesome. Lastly we had coffee which was prepared very well with a strong aroma.
So overall, it was a great experience with wonderful street side south indian food...

In a compromising outing, if you have no options instead of veg, then this is your perfect place! Delicious South Indian dishes will do the job for you. The reason why I am giving it 4 stars because of the seat arrangement which is quite awkward and it does not have AC! Otherwise every thing is good with this place.

But very very basic restaurant with marble top table and benches. But their quality and quantity makes them very very popular. The South Indian food scene south of Taratala is a bit depressing one. Only the basics covered and that too only the vegetarian items, the cuisine needs a dire update to branch out from the two everpresent joints, of which New United Cafe is a bold representative. This dip-ceiling gloomy little joint serves generic South Indian food but is close to the hearts of everyone in Behala. The idyllic partner of a matinee at Ashoka, this place is an illusion at its best. In the disguise of a downtrodden, a true gem awaits. Alas, the day of the multiplexes came and took with it the constant rolling in and out of casual customers, leaving the loyalists wave flags and sing its glory.
New United Cafe can't boast in terms of ambiance, situating itself beside the dusty road and frozen in time, but the staffs, with their admirable hospitality, keep the place running! The vadas, the dosas and the idlis keep on coming and putting smiles on the faces that opt to satiate the hunger without wrinkling the pockets. A down-to-earth place(quite literally), this isn't quite a café which millennials have grown accustomed to but a blast from the past for sure.
The food here is the tip of the generic hat and its quality has dipped very little. Should they change with time? Well, that's just a question time itself will answer...for right now, retro is back and so, amidst the rise of a different kind of Southern cuisine in Kolkata, the resurgence of basics keep afloat such little joints!

I would have given even more credits if the place had better seating arrangement and more staff. The very little staff they have are really Courteous. I should mention that the dosas are awesome. I loved the masala paper onion dosa here. Really worth a try. It's a really famous joint in behala. Also gives out for takeaway. Be here if you don't mind the clumsy seating arrangement and really want to have good South Indian food at a really reasonable and pocket friendly price.

Located by the side of the chaotic streets in Behala, this place technically serves only 2 Dosas: Plain and Masala. But, they have about 12-15 different permutations of the two types: Plain, Paper, Butter, Onion, etc. It's a no fancy place and rightly, should've been so. Service is quick and the dosas are pretty good!

The butter dosa is fantastic and the most famous and the best item so far is the Veg Pollao (yes, that's how it's spelt)
Decent South Indian tiffin available. The dosa was upto the mark but I was not happy with the idly. The Dahi Vada is a bit over-rated at this place; I got a vada that was so dry that I did not consume beyond two spoons.
The ambience is quite challenging yet the service is very quick. I'd suggest it is best to take away.
Being a local boy I have visited this cafe several times since childhood. They only serve south indian dishes of various types, starting from wide range of dosa to dahi vadas. The price is reasonable or I might say its much within budget for anyone. After may days had dahi vada over here and just loved it. Situated just beside the Ashoka cinema hall in Behala, it is easy to locate.
Though I do not like South Indian food that much but this place brings back a lot of memories from childhood when mom used to get takeaways. The vada is really awesome and you should definitely try the dosa. You might find some inconsistencies in the chutney though, where some days it might be a bit hotter than usual.

This is the first ever South Indian eatery in Behala. Located at a minute walk from Ashoka Movie Hall , this place usually draws crowd which consists of generally the movie goers. This is non Ac but a cosy place for a quick bite. Seating is available but there is usually a wait here. Has a seating capacity of around 25 eaters . Fresh and clean food is served but the taste is moderate , not at all disappointing. Price is reasonable. Idli, and various types of Dosha, Vara, and Coffee are available here. Bill is non taxable.

I am a frequent customer of this joint since 4 years and Man , they seriously make some good south Indian food . The Butter Dosa , Masala Dosa , Vada's are yum . Even who don't prefer south Indian food can come once and try it out . I can guarantee you that you'll not regret .
I have been to this place since nursery days. This place serves the best south indian food in behala. It is a small shop just adjacent to behala post office (landmark being Ashoka cinema hall). Every food available here is just superb. One can never complain about the quality of food that they serve. It will be hard to recommend any special item. But if you are really hungry and is a rice lover like me go for veg pulao (available only till 1:30 pm), you won't be disappointed.

For a Behala-bashi, this is a place we grew up with. The dosa is still great, though a bit costly compared to its quality, but okay. The service is still quite better than expected, even during the busiest hours of Durga puja. No wonder people stand in lines to treat themselves here ;)

I had tried Dahi Vada and Pulao served with chutney, sambar and raita. Dahi Vada has a sweet and chatpata taste here with sev and cashews garnished on it.
