Situated in a very quaint alley this is a must visit place for fish lovers. Since its open from 10am-3pm make sure to drop in early on weekends. Best bet to go on a weekday to avoid all the traffic and hustle and bustle of Lonavla.
We ordered the Pomfret fry which was delish 🎯💯. The fish was fresh and well marinated and fried served piping hot. Also had Prawns curry 🦐 + steam rice. Fingerlicckin good...the chapatis too were just off the tawa. It's a must visit place and if you fall for it (I bet if anyone won't) the drive all the way from Pune..just worth it.... Can't wait to go back again..

This place is a little difficult to locate as there are many homely foods in Lonavala.

Ambience- I’m a sucker for places which give you homely feels rather than the flashy places.
This place is small, and has some trees and a swing at the entrace. I loved the background tbh because I love such places.

Now coming to the food,
Prawns Masala- Probably one of the most amazing things I’ve tasted in my entire life. This is a must try even for the ones who don’t enjoy sea food. Order some rice or chapati to go along with this and you’ll have the taste lingering in your mouth for days.

Pomphret Fry- A good dish with fresh fish and plenty of masala.

Service- Service is pretty quick as we went early it wasn’t crowded.

Staff- Tbh, I found the staff rude because they have plenty of customers and care only for the people in big groups. Also, after our lunch when we stopped to sit on the swing for sometime we got pretty harsh looks from the people working there.

Very good food. On our two day getaway to Lonavala, Homely Food at Joshi Sanatorium was highly recommended to us. When we reached there, we were a bit taken aback by the very, very humble exterior, and even called my sister in law to confirm that this was, in actuality, the place. She urged us to walk in, and assured us that we would love the simple, home-cooked, delicious maharashtrian food. And I'm so glad that we didn't let the look of the place put us off, because the food is delicious. Don't expect fancy fittings, and comfortable tapestried seating, don't expect air conditioning, don't expect uniformed servers. But judging by the number of people who came in their fancy cars in the short time that we were there, Homely Food is certainly well known. And rightly so.

We had pomfret fry, kolambi masala (yummmmmmy gravy and very good sized prawns), brinjal subji (so good!), dal fry, plain rice, roti, and sol kadhi. We had ordered half plates of everything, and when we saw the ample quantity we asked again to verify that this really was a half plate portion of everything. Freshly cooked in the open kitchen, the food is simple and delicious, something that one would have very happily at the home of a maharashtrian friend whose 'aai' excels in the kitchen. We had checked into one of the high end resorts in Lonavala, and, believe me, this meal was wayyyy better than any meal that we had at the resort. And certainly didn't burn any hole in the pocket either!

Foodie weekend getaway to Homely Food-Lonavla (fyi - please follow the Zomato linked google map - there are many mummy's kitchen places, you are bound to confuse this place).
Homely food does justice to the name
First impression of this place when we went to write down our names for reservation , were some ladies in the kitchen cooking food.
All ladies kitchen, well managed , very clean and hygienic.
The food is simple, tasty and yummy.(the masala taste reminds me of konkan side masala)
We tried :-
Chicken Masala ( gravy was brilliant)
Chicken Sukka
Pomfret fry ( my favourite, very tasty masala, fresh fish)
Chapati and rice

The only thing that bothered us was the waiting time , 1 hour waiting and we were not getting any updates regarding when we would get the table.( we were very very very hungry)

A very calm place with people visiting it very often. And most of the guests are returning guests that means the quality and value for money is of prime importance. The food is tasty and not that expensive. We liked it overall

Suniel Shetty dines here and I kid you not BCUZ I got to meet him and his wife for he had come for lunch.
I knew that Sachin Tendulkar and Suniel Shetty often come here and dine but didn't know that it's a real thing.
I've been here twice and the taste was same both the times.
For starters we ordered :

Chicken Masala Dry: 4/5
The dry chicken is amazing in taste. It gives that flavour in mouth that your taste buds couldn't forget. Do try this.

Pomfret Fry: 4.5/5
Big Pomfret fried with masalas gives it a blast of flavours. The fish is always fresh and is made really crispy. This time they had burnt it slightly on the other side, so when I flipped the fish it was having blackish burnt particles stuck onto.

Main course : Prawns Gravy - 4.5/5
The prawns Curry was so good that even my tummy was full, I had it with rice and even chapati. Loved it and it's a must try. It's coconut based so if you don't like coconut in your food then you shouldn't order.
Chapatis they serve are thin and soft. Rice were steamed and cooked nicely.
Only thing is that their vegetarian food is horrible. Don't eat veg here at all. Rest is good and you'll always find a waiting for 15-20 mins minimum.
Must visit when in Lonavla.

P. S. - there are two homely food joints in Lonavala and this one is near Joshi Sanatorium. It's inside the lane beside Hari International not on the one on the Highway.

We have had -
Prawn Masala
Pomfret Fry

Each one of the items were simply awesome. It was healthy as all the ingredients used were fresh, there was a personalised homely touch to the food served and I liked it a lot. That’s it. Happy Dining! :)

Very tasty and clean food, made to order...forget the ambience just go there for the food. The people are warm as well so service is great too!
It is run by an all female cooking staff and the kitchen is super clean. Their Aloo jeera and Chicken curry are super tasty and they serve fresh hot phulka rotis in steel boxes, just as at home.
Be prepared for a wait on weekends.

Open only for breakfast and lunch. Dinner is not served.

Amazingly testy food. Fishes are fresh. Preparation is mouthwatering. Ambiance is very simple but clean. it is like village home from Maharashtra. Half portion of curry or rice is sufficient for one person. We enjoyed this treat in month of June'18 in full of rains.

There comes a time during every vacation, when you start craving the kind of food your mum makes for you. In most places, there is no such option, but in Lonavala, there is..

Shaila Phase's Joshi Sanatorium, serves up delicious Maharashtrian food, made from scratch and served piping hot. The place is open for a limited time and attracts huge crowds, so be sure to come here early.

Being in Lonavala, trying sea food is not exactly the best way to go, instead, we went for some poultry and mutton.

The Mutton Masala - The meat was cooked to perfection, soft, very easy to get off the bone, and none of that muttony smell. Although the spice quotient was pretty low, it was pretty acceptable.

Chicken Dry - This although tasted great, the chicken was unfortunately overcooked. It was stringy and tough and dry. Maybe it was because they used the already existing chicken masala and reduced, this getting the dry part right but ruining the chicken. Will be sure to order the gravified version next time.

The Chapatis are made to order, since orders keep on coming, the chapatis are always fresh and served in steel containers like at home.

The place is pretty well kept and hygienic. They have an open kitchen of sorts which is very well kept. It's a female run kitchen, the food has not artificial additives, it's all the old school recipes passed from generation to generation which is why the taste does not falter.

Quick Rating

Ambiance - 2.5/5
VFM - 5/5
Taste - 4/5
Service - 4/5

Excellent food! Although we didn't get to try the pomfret and other fish fry because their fish cart was delayed today, all the other dishes we ordered were really good. We tried the vatana usal, brinjal , prawn Curry and mutton curry. Prawn Curry was the best! Must visit when in lonavala!

IS IT WORTH THE WAIT? YES.

Homely food is a traditional Maharashtrian restaurant located in Lonavala. It's located in a small lane next to Hari International, after the market ends (when you're coming from Mumbai). It's a tad hard to find when you're coming for the first time.

This place has built up quite a name for itself for its tasty traditional Maharashtrian fare.

If you're vegetarian, you're probably better off giving this place a miss as there are almost no veg options.

Now the issue with this place is the waiting place. With not many tables and a lot of crowd, you'd invariably have to wait 30-60 mins to be seated. But is it worth it ? Definitely.

Went for lunch here with family. Entered the place at around 2 and got a seat by 2:45.

We ordered pompfret fry, sukka chicken, prawn (kolambi) curry, dal and rice. It took them about 15 mins to serve us.

The pompfret curry was beautifully marinated with some great masalas. Unfortunately, I felt that the fish was a little old.

Then had rice with the other dishes. We had an accompaniment of mango pickle which was delicious and went really well with the dal. The sukka chicken was quite nice but probably better to eat with roti, than rice. The prawns were delicious, well cooked and the curry was sublime.

At the end we ordered a glass of chaas (buttermilk) each. It was really good, too and was the perfect was to end the meal.

About the ambience, it's very simple. You're served in steel utensils and most people eat with their hands. The service was decent, too.

If you come to lonavala, and are a foodie, then this place is a must try !

Located in the beginning of the city, this place is difficult to find but still has a huge crowd of people waiting for their turn to eat in this place. Authentic home like food with top notch hygiene. At times people waiting outside are greater than the ones eating inside. Food is very delicious. The pomfret fry was heaven.

After satisfying our soul with a trek to beautiful Duke's Nose... It was only fair that we satisfy our tummies equally. So we started looking for a good homely food on Zomato and we came across Joshi's Homely Food. So thought.... lets give it a try.

Food: 4
Service: 5
Ambiance: very humble n homely.

When we arrived there was a long queue of people waiting. We went inside and checked .. the place is basic. But then I had a little peep in the kitchen and saw owners completely involved in cooking and serving  process, other cooks were also so neat and tidy and so was the kitchen. It did not look like a restaurant kitchen ... it was actually how we cook at home .. but on a larger scale.

We ordered Prawns Curry, Mutton Masala, Fry Pomfret, Rice Bhakri, Steamed Rice.

No excess oil, no unnecessary color, not overly spiced up.... the food was just good and tasty. Prawns were really big size, mutton was so soft that it was just falling off the bone, Bhakri was super soft and Fry Pomfret was the highlight. Pofret was fresh and soft and Masala was just like we make it at home... flavourful, moist, tingling. Just yummmmmm.

People speak of presentation of food in big restaurants but I tell you what... there is nothing more tempting than to see Pomfret Fry served with a steal spatula under it. It assures that.. its directly off the pan into the plate. Just brilliant. And they served Bhakris in closed lid steal Dabba... just like home cause we want family to have it hot and soft.

In all manner this place serves homely food in homely way.

This is our second visit to this simple eating place in Lonavala that serves freshly made homely food whichis tasty and very affordable. They don't have any Fish, Mutton or Chicken Thalis on their menu and you have to order a la carte, but they always give you empty Thalis to eat in, which is very nice. The place is very basic with not too much seating capacity, so you always have to wait to be seated if you visit on a weekend, when the place is packed. You also need to remember that they are open from 9.30 am to 10.30 am for Breakfast & from 12.00 pm to 3.00 pm for Lunch. They close sharp at 3.00 pm & will not allow you to enter after 2.45 pm or so. They are also not open for Dinner, as they serve only Breakfast & Lunch. You have to check with them which Fish they have at the time of your visit, as this changes daily, depending on what fish they get everyday. All their Mutton & Chicken dishes are however available daily and their preparations are very good. They also serve freshly baked Chapatties served in a Stainless Steel Chapati Container with a Lid to keep them warm & fresh, just like we do at home. Their Fish is also always fresh & tasty and their Vegetarian food is also very good. They don't serve Solkadi, but they serve freshly made Buttermilk, which is very nice. Their rates are very reasonable & you can have a lovely homemade meal for a small amount, which is what has made then so very popular. It is always advisable to go there early for Lunch, say by 1.00 pm or so, as later on most of their stuff gets over & you may not be left with much choice of what to eat. The ambience is however poor & they do need to look at improving it with better seating arrangements & introduction of an A/C section as well, with higher rates. It still however remains a great place to visit for a tasty homemade meal at prices that will not bore a hole in your pocket and is definitely a must visit for Lunch, whenever you are in Lonavala.

As the name suggests it is very homely like setup, no fancy decor no air conditioner no crockery rather wooden benches wide & comfortable, steel glasses & plates, sufficient quantities for a family of 2+1, lots of tastes & aromas of authentic spices, their kitchen area is huge & hygienic, (1) don't forget to do the entry in their waiting register as they believe in first come first serve also (2) do carry cash as they do not accept UPI or Card Payment. (3) you must try their Solkadi.(Soul-Kadi). Everything is authentic here, freshness of the fishes is guaranteed, no color/preservatives/soda etc. in any of their food.

After all the praise for homely food I landed here and waited for almost 40/45 mins. One needs to register the name at the counter then the table would be allotted. No thali's only à la carte ordering system. We ordered chicken curry, chicken sukha, rice, bhakri and chapati. Chicken curry and sukha was good. Bhakri was soft and hot whereas chapati was like machine made. Overall good food experience not too much masaledaar it's proper homely food to explore. Please carry cash as no online or card payment.

Ultimate lunch experience! It's not named 'Homely' just for namesake but certainly lives up to it! No overpowering flavours or spices and very light on the tummy, yet filling and satisfying! A must visit place but the food is only available till 3 pm so you need to be there well before it.

Lovely place to visit. You get thali which is absolutely amazing in taste. I have been here more than once and have had veg and non veg items as well, both are a go for, outstanding taste. The owner of the place is very friendly and has a motherly nature whenever she talks. She will also let you inside and house tell you about how she started this place and what all things she had to go through. She is lovely the food is lovely the staff is kind and helpful. This place is crowded all the time though as people from far come to taste the food off this place. I would highly recommend you people if you guys are giving a visit to Lonavala no matter the reason of visit, this place is worth it. Make sure you come as early as possible as it will take time get dining due to waiting period. Don't worry.. it's worth the wait in my opinion.

Visited Feb 2020. When I visit Lonavala I'm not in the city at lunch time (sightseeing :-). This time I was in the city at lunch time and could not miss the chance of visiting this well-known eatery. Did not disappoint. The food was good, tasty. The open kitchen is clean - you can go in (see attached pic). The staff is very polite. Luckily I was there on a weekday, so no crowds. And yes, the loncha (pickle) is very good too; made right there it seems. If the owner ever sells it by the bottle I will be a customer. The only thing I kind of disliked was charging Rs 25 for bottled water. BTW I had Chicken Masala (Rs 180), Chappati (Rs 12 each) and Taak (buttermilk) all were superb. Unless you dislike Maharashtrian food, there is no reason not to visit this place. See attached pics. Forgot to add : the chappatis were served in a round stainless steel box; where else have you seen that?

Had gone once but came back as there was a huge waiting period. This time went on a weekday and a bit early. Wanted mutton, but is was not available, the food otherwise was really good. The rassa was amazing, properly spiced and not oils at all. It didn’t feel heavy at all, the quality of rice can be improved. A must visit place if you are looking for good Maharashtrian food in Lonavla.
