Near Matunga station there are many south India food joints But I personally love this place. This is my go to place to south Indian food. The service is super fast and efficient, I really liked that they don't have a menu card everything is written on the walls of the place.
I usually order Podi idli and Pineapple Sheera which taste so good.
Podi idli is idli along with some special chutney over it not the normal coconut chutney but a different kind of chutney.
Pineapple sheera is my really amazing they actually use pineapple and not the essence.
The prices here are not so pocket friendly but it's totally worth it
Mysore Sada dosa and Sabudana Wada's are awesome.
Best south Indian restaurant in mumbai for affordable prices. Each and everything in this restaurant is lipsmacking. My special recommendation here is rava dosa, neer dosa, mysore masala dosa, batata vada, coffee and various types of idlis specially podi idli.
It's located nearby matunga central station in east side. Always crowded, you will have to wait in que, they don't reserve tables, first come first serve basis.
In the Tamil enclave of King’s Circle, 80-year-old Ram Ashraya is beloved by southern families for its spectacular dosas, idli (spongy, round, fermented rice cake) and uttapa (pancake with toppings). Filter coffee is strong and flavoursome. The menu changes daily. It’s just outside Matunga Rd train station’s east exit and draws Mumbaikars of all persuasions.
Must to go once in your lifetime
Enjoy the crowd and have amazing breakfast while in Matunga
Mysore masala dosa , pineapple sheera was best

This has the to be my most favourite breakfast outlet, located right at the heart of matunga and every one loves this place. Right from morning 5 am to evening this place is always crowded.
Mysore dosa isy favourite as their chutney is totally different from others, rava onion dosa is good to, its crispy and tasty served like an pyramid.
5/5 anytime.
This place has the best pineapple sheera and filter coffee..
The sheera has the perfect amount of pineapple and it's perfectly sweet, it can fulfill all your sweet cravings..
Their filter coffee too is amazing, it's not too strong, but not too light either, just the way I like it..
If you visit this place , do try both the items
One of the most famous South Indian place to eat...i have been there multiple times and never been tired with the food they serve...
Podi idli: hot and soft idli with butter and podi chutney served with both the chutneys and sambhsr is something to definitely have.
Butter idli: sans the podi chutney but tastes well
Dosa: even the butter sada dosa tastes so well and crispy
Pineapple sheera: the best I have had
If you want to have hearty breakfast you must visit this place.
Had heard a lot of this place and it was definitely worth it. Fortunately we got a table to sit.
We ordered Rava Masala dosa, Mysore sada dosa, Rasam Vada, Bisebile bhath, Buttermilk, Filter coffee & ofcourse Pineapple sheera.
Well you must try pineapple sheera as it tasted amazing with pineapple bits in it and served hot. We ordered another one before we leave but unfortunately it was over, so please ensure you ordered pineapple sheera in advance.
And not to forget good staff !
Will definitely visit again ! 👍🏻😁
One of the best South Indian restaurant ever been to!!! Must try!!
Simply the best breakfast.
Worth the wait.
Fortunately they did not rush, we waited for 15 mins peacefully seated for pineapple sheera. Which was nice.
Loved all that we ordered.
- neer dosa
- podi idli ( 1 piece we get )
- Mysore Rava dosa ( best solution to the confusion as I wanted to eat something in maysore and rava dosa but obviously couldn't eat both )
- pineapple sheera.
Extremely economical.
Fresh and south Indian food at its best.
Because it was same as I had in Udupi Manglore it’s the best ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Best authentic South Indian food. On Sundays there is atleast 30-45 minutes long queue to sit and have there. For taking away also atleast 30 minutes wait. But the food is amazing. Just cheap and perfect taste with the perfect quantity. They even provide unlimited sambar and chutney. Must visit. Must try rawa dosa.

Food: 5/5
The food no doubt is lip smackingly delicious.
Service: 5/5
Staff: 5/5
**REcomended
If you ever want to try authentic south indian
Don't even miss out on this place
Should try pineapple sheera
We had Mysore Dosa which was total yumm.. , also rava masala dosa which was Amazing.. & idli butter pudi , it was only 1 idli.. But was nice.. And also mendu wada.. Which tasted okayish.. But were very soft..
Getting an entry into the restaurant itself can be quite a challenge!
On weekends, particularly on Sundays, there are long lines and one has to get one's name registered and wait at the entrance to be called in! The lines are on account of the small size of the restaurant as well as the popularity of the restaurant. In recent past, the restaurant interiors have been redone and it has a better ambiance now.
The service and the food remain the same though and are the main draw. Prices are very affordable. The restaurant makes and serves very simple but tasty south Indian food that Udipi restaurants at Mumbai are known for. All this is done with minimum fuss. The waiters don't even get a menu to the guests - and probably because the restaurant believes in its menu being well known and also because the restaurant serves a limited but popular menu. The trick to make a successful visit to the restaurant is to choose a time when the lines are missing and when there is a greater chance of getting what one orders - popularity of the restaurant ensures that some items on the menu just vanish after some hours in the morning, having been served to the customersss.
Thankyou:)
Good food
Tasty South Indian food
Fast service
But long queue for waiting
It's a crowded place all the time
This is a nice restaurant situated at Matunga east in Mumbai. They are specialized for South Indian cuisine. I ordered Rava Masala Dosa and coffee which was well prepared.Nice place.
This is one of the famous restaurants which serves authentic Southindian food in Mumbai.
Located near Matunga Station.
Also this place is crowded most of the time so you'll have to wait for 5/10 min for a table.
So recently been here with my friends, we had some Southindian dishes -
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Medu vada -
Usually in other restaurants the sambar is tangy but here the taste was bit different.
But it was still good.
Rava masala dosa & sada dosa :
Both were good and tasty.
Pineapple Shira :
It was freshly prepared but not as sweet as I expected it to be.
Sweet Lassi :
It wasn't thick but overall okay.
excellent place for sunday morning break fast with friends and right in the corner
.. i am regular visitor to the hotel with my friends.. one of the best item to have here on sunday morning is "misal pav".. or you can have "usal pav" both are extremely fantastic items..

Best place to have authentic South Indian breakfast.

1. Idli
2. Mysore masala Dosa
3. Pudina Vada
4. Neer Dosa
5. Pineapple Sheera
6. Filter Coffee
7. Upma (take away)
8. Pudi Idli (take away)

Good old place for South indian delicacies. Loved the pineapple sheera, podi idli, Mysore masala dosa, filter coffee 😍😋 pocket friendly, quick service, near to station what else do you need in this fast Mumbai life. Forever favourite 😍
Best place for breakfast in Matunga east
Such great breakfast . with legendary strong south indian filter coffeee. good service. quick and efficient. The idlis were nice fluffly and just right. The vadas were toooo good. crsip, hot and excellent
On my quest to find good restaurants in Mumbai, I had this one on my list as I had seen it with rating of 4.9 on Zomato which is very rare to see. So went there with couple of my friends for lunch. Location is 2 mins from Matunga railway station at the corner on east side. When we entered it was full but a table became empty in 2 mins.
Now coming to actual food part. We ordered following items on basis of our liking, Zomato reviews and urge of trying something new.
Dahi Vada
Dahi Vada: Very soft vada with nice and thick dahi. No spices were added to it but were made available on the table to add on personal taste. 4/5 in taste.
Kadi Idli
Kadi Idli: Kadi reminded me of the kadi which my mom makes. Taste was exactly similar. Idli was very soft and the way Idli should be. 4.5/5 on taste.
Mysore Masala Dosa
Mysore Masala Dosa: Dosa and the chutney inside was good. Potato bhaji inside was nothing great to write about. 3.5/5 on taste.
Neer Dosa
Neer Dosa: It had strong flavor of ghee with it. It came with sambhar, green chutney, red chutney (good) and a ground coconut sweet chutney. This all gave it a nice variety and uniqueness. 4/5 on taste.
Filter Coffee
Filter Coffee: Somehow I liked this coffee more than other south Indian restaurants I tried in Matunga. Reason could be its sweetness and less bitterness. 5/5 on taste.
Conclusion:
Hotel Ramashray Bill
It cost us Rs. 255 for 5 items. Food is reasonably priced and flavorful. But I would not give it rating like 4.9 on Zomato. But still it is a very good restaurant and totally worth trying.
This place is one of the iconic restaurant in mumbai . They are serving us from around 80 years and still they have consistent in there food quality , making techniques and service also i heard so much from my dad about this place . So i visit this place last week with my friends and totally love this place . Simple sitting area and decor also if you are lucky you get the table otherwise you have wait for table because sometimes que was so long but still people wait for to eat some breakfast . Staff was prompt and courtious and service also quick.
This place is featured in South Indian breakfast and also regionals favourites . So we had here rava masala , sada dosa , medu vada , pineapple sheera and lassi . All food items are really amazing . All dishes are very simple and clean not much fancy that's why they more attracts to eat . One more thing i observed in this i eat all dishes but don't feels like its to heavy so i like this .
So i recommend to all do visit guys!!!!
Very hygienic food. Must have Podi Idly, Rava Masala Dosa, Pineapple Sheera (DO NOT MISS THIS). Very helpful and polite staff.
Food: 4/5
Service:3/5
Price: 4/5 (168/- for the order)
Order: ulundu dosa, rasam wada, butterscotch sheera
Hits: none
Misses: none
- Ulundu dosa is rarely found in restaurants. its mix of rice and urad daal batter. this makes it different than a normal dosa in terms of taste and texture. nothing out of the world but good variation to try.
- rasam is really strong with pepper. i would say the best among the dishes i tried.
- butterscotch sheera is nice twist to a regular sheera. rawa is perfectly roasted to have grainy texture.
- as expected, it was really crowded but they have their own way to manage it as perfectly as possible.
Rava dosa King in mumbai.
Ram ashraya is one of the best restaurant in Mumbai serving south Indian cuisine. Its located nearby matunga station west. All the dishes made here are excellent and rates are very reasonable. Butterscotch sheera is a must try here.
Went with my friend. I'm giving it five stars only because of the fresh vegetarian food and service by waiter. I am otherwise not comfortable standing in a queue and sitting beside strangers.
For me food they serve is prasad. Anand - word that describes my feelings whenever I eat here. Avid fan of this place, simple decor with tulsi garlands on Lord s photos, inexpensive yet hygienic and tasty food, and lots of positive vibe.
Ram ashraya: This is a south indian style restaurant
Food ordered 1) Idli vada🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. A suggestion, Pour your on the top and vada should be completely diped in sambhar and then you will enjoy it
2) Masala dosa🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. Nothing cam go wrong with this
3) Pineapple sheera: A must try dish here.Absolutely lop smacking 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
4) Filtered coffee🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Worth: This. Place is Worth it
Another south indian restaurant in Matunga which is pure awesomeness. Similar to Cafe madras, this place is also famous for its mouth-watering dishes. Their menu is simple and straight forward.
You start off with Rasam idli or vada till your main dish arrives. I personally like the mysore rava masala dosa and the neer dosa. They even have bisibele baath which is one more dish that i really love. You can of course try the Sheera there as well. Finish of with a glass of filter kaapi.
The service is quick and the staff is courteous. The place also has a waiting list on busy days.
Amazing place for a Sunday morning breakfast :)
Cheers !!
This place has always been one of my Favourite..and it has been life saver when it comes to having early morning breakfast.
I always wish to have every dish made in there (which we did 😉) in the morning.
In the list we had my favourite pick was Sheera 🥰 and Sabudana wada which we hogged like anything.
Staff is so generous and always coperative.
This place is about 80 years old and beloved for southern families who enjoy their meals here, the restaurant is an authentic udupi style and people love it because of the quality of food it serves here. Its open from 5 in the morning and is popular for its spectacular dosas, spongy idlis and uttapas The menu is written on a chalkboard which is changed daily in terms of their day to day specials. And have weekly off on mondays It is located at Bhandrakar Road, Matunga East. A light meal will cost you around 100 INR
Hotel Ram Ashray - Limited Menu with Good Food...!!!
At any given day one has to stand in queue for around 5 to 10 minutes to get a seat.
After a patient while you get a seat wherever available that too on a table sharing basis.
You’ll get a 1980’s vibe due to its interior and atmosphere.
I have been many times but writing review this time.
There is no official menu card at this restaurant. They have hardly 15 to 16 dishes.
Every available dish is written with chalk on a black stone. The moment it’s out of stock the particular name is erased.
Sheera : All time favourite dessert and must order. Flavours I’ve tried so far are Pineapple and Chocolate.
Served hot always.
Idli Sambar : Big size Idli and Medu Wada dipped in Sambar. Definitely tasty and should order.
Dahi Medu Wada : Unique and tasty as I haven’t seen this at any other South Indian restaurant. Served chilled.
Neer Dosa : Soft and Spongy Dosa served with Chutney and Sambar. I would like to Highlight their Chutney as it’s worth craving.
Goli Bajji : Spongy dough balls in udipi style. To be eaten with Chutney. Must order for first timers.
Bisibele Bhath : Masala Gravy Rice served with fryms. In simple term it is medium spicy gravy rice.
Other items to be tried are Pudina Batata Wada and Filter Tea.
*Can be visited again and again.
*Pocket Friendly.
*Quick Eat-and-Go.
*Worth Quality and Quantity.
Located near Matunga station, Ram Ashraya is one of the awesome places to serve south Indian food. Their service is very quick and staff is helpful. Every dish is different and delicious. But we tried, Poodi Idli, Mysore Masala Dosa and Filter coffee. Everything was so exquisite! 🤩
This place is always crowded but the service is really fast.Good place for breakfast or brunch. I loved the mysore masala dosa, pineapple sheera and filter coffee.
I think this place serves the best sambhar ever. If you are a south Indian food fan, its a must try.
Worth the hype.
We visited this place at 5 AM in the morning to be the first ones to enter the restaurant and there were already two people ahead of us. By the time it was 5:30, the entire restaurant was full and there was a waiting line outside the restaurant. Never seen such a scenario before.
Coming to food, everything is just amazing and super tasty. We ordered
1) Pudi Idli (Spicy) - 5/5
2) Thatte Idli - 5/5
3) Rasam Idli - 4/5
4) Medu Vada - 5/5
5) Ghee Roast - 5/5
6) Rava Dosa - 5/5
7) Sweet Lassi - 5/5
8) Pineapple Sheera - 4/5
9) Filter Coffee - 5/5
The service is quick, staff is good and it lived up to its hype. Will definitely visit again.
Best Breakfast place for me personally
The South Indian menu is out of this world
I specially travel from Thane to visit this place
It is a food galore for vegetarians as it offers various variety of food
The lassi here is awesome do try
Waiting for this place is 20mins and every minute is worth it.
The service is quick and the staff is helpful
Ramashray Hotel in Matunga is a classic gem! I
savored the Podi Idli, Rava Dosa, Filter Coffee, Idli Wada, and Rasam Idli—each dish was a delight. The place is popular, so expect a 15-20 minute wait, especially on weekends. Don't miss the heavenly Mysore Pak—it's a must-try sweet. While parking can be a bit challenging, the restaurant's proximity to Matunga Station makes it convenient to reach.
Overall, Ramashray offers a fantastic South Indian culinary experience, and the wait is well worth it for the delicious spread they serve.
One of the best places to have authentic South Indian food in Matunga. They have a set of food items on the menu but they all are amazing. Fresh and delicious food at an affordable price. The coconut chutney is fresh and refreshing. Sambar is also on point. Do visit if you are near Matunga. Just walking distance from the Matunga station.
We had podi idli, idli, maysore dosa, rasam vada, pineapple Shira and kaju pineapple sweet all of it was delicious specially the podi idli.
Dal vada was too crisp.
Its quite a famous outlet so you might have to stand in line.
No dedicated parking its also very close to the matunga railway station so finding parking space could be difficult.
One of the oldest restaurants serving authentic South Indian food. A wide selection of options. I've been here previously, and the genuineness has not changed!
We had coffee, Medu Wada, Idli Wada, and Idli Sambar.
Extremely affordable costs for hot, fresh portions. Although it's always crowded, waiting doesn't take too long.
Furthermore, it's not far from Matunga Railway Station. Please come by!
1. Totally like the Dosa, Vada, Filter Coffee and Tea
2. Queue is expected so take margin of 15 minutes minimum while visiting
3. Old, rustic vibes really great....
4. I always visit whenever m in Mumbai
Amazing place for South Indian food lovers. We have tried some of their dishes and all were very good. Benne Masala Dosa is a must-try, the taste of white butter was really yum. Apart from this, Medu Vada, Neer Dosa, Banglore Masala Dosa, Coffee, Lassi and a variety of sweets (especially Mysore Pak) all were exceptional.
One of the best south Indian restaurant...
I recently dined at the South Indian restaurant, and it was an absolute culinary delight! The menu offered a diverse range of authentic South Indian dishes that left my taste buds in awe.
To start, the dosas were outstanding – crispy on the outside and perfectly soft on the inside. The coconut chutney and sambar that accompanied them were bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance had a cozy, inviting feel. I highly recommend this South Indian restaurant for anyone seeking an authentic and memorable culinary experience.
Matunga, my haven for South Indian cravings, recently led me to the legendary Ram Ashraya. Stepping inside felt like a trip back in time, with the walls adorned with chalk-drawn menus and old-school wooden chairs whispering tales of countless satisfied palates. The air buzzed with a familiar, comforting warmth, a testament to this restaurant's enduring charm.
My craving for authenticity led me to the classic Medu Vada, and oh, what a revelation it was! The crispy exterior gave way to a fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth interior, bursting with the subtle flavors of lentils. Each bite was a perfect symphony of texture and taste, a true ode to Udipi cuisine.
And what better accompaniment to a Vada than a steaming cup of filter coffee? Ram Ashraya's brew was strong, aromatic, and, I confess, a tad too sweet for my liking. But here's the beauty – the staff, as sweet and welcoming as the coffee itself, readily adjusted the sweetness to my preference. This simple gesture spoke volumes about their dedication to customer satisfaction.
As I savored my coffee, I observed a delightful scene. Guests, young and old, families and friends, all united by the love for Ram Ashraya's timeless flavors. The smiles, the chatter, the aroma – it was a symphony of pure culinary joy.
Verdict: 5 out of 5 stars!
