Authentic South indian foods served with trademark simplicity and bereft of any grandeur. Truly a place for the connoisseur!
Café Madras is our go-to restaurant for South Indian food, a Sunday morning breakfast here is how we like to start our week.
We generally order, Rava Dosa, Masala Dosa, Medu Vada & Idli all paired with Filter Coffee and some Pineapple Sheera.
But to be honest you can’t go wrong with ordering food from this restaurant as everything on the menu is absolutely delicious.
Out of all the South Indian style restaurants in the area it stand out for the quality of food and great customer service.
Matunga is famous for South Indian Cuisine and this place is one of my favorite restaurant to have South Indian Food.
My usual order consist of Masala Utappa that is combination of Utappa and Masala, second item which I ordered was Rasam Vada that was just next level yummy the rasam was hot and spicy and Vada was okay but rasam made the dish awesome.
I was ordered pineapple & Chikoo sheera
Pineapple sheera was not so great but chikoo was really amazing a must try at this place
The service was really very fast only Masala uttapa took some time and the staff was very polite
Coming to the ambience it a classy retro place, the place give a perfect vibe of late 1990's

Every other Sunday, I make sure I'm having my breakfast here. King's Circle doubles up as a hub for South Indian outlets which open up since the crack of dawn. One of these gems is Café Madras, which at any given time tends to be crowded, yet people always throng this area and wait patiently to be seated inside, sharing the table with other enthusiasts. The year 1940, is when Sr. Kamath started Cafe Madras along with a Tamilian friend, and is now run by his grandsons. The place along with a pocket friendly fare, has a relaxing vibe to it. The ideal time to visit is definitely for breakfast, there's no excuse around it. The staff is very courteous, quick and reverent. Whatever you have here, whether it's the amazing Idli Butter Podi, the rich, lip smacking Vada Sambar, the flavorful Uttapam and a range of dosas, is authentic. Paired with their filter "Kaapi", which is brewed from their in-house blend made in Vakola, you're looking forward to an utterly ambrosial experience. Satiating yet light on your wallet, this place is definitely recommend for the ideal South Indian breakfast affair.

This place offers you the real taste of South Indian food. The most amazing and delicious item is the chutneys itself. Had a very nice masala dosa and coffee. Very tasty food.
I drove all the way from Thane for this awsome taste as it was amongst to never miss tastes around. Breakfast items are awsome and fresh all have a taste of south simply amazing to see this taste in Mumbai.
A heaven for South Indian food lovers because whatever you have here is authentic. The dosa melts in your mouth and the taste of white butter makes it taste exceptional. Uttapam is another class apart dish of theirs with desiccated coconut chutney and sizzling hot sambhar. Idli podi chutney is probably their signature dish and podi masala splashed on idli tastes amazing. At last their signature dessert arrived that is the pineapple sheera which is loaded with mini chunks of pineapple and dry fruits. The lemon slush bursts in your mouth and leaves behind the sweet taste. People always throng this area because it's always crowded. The ambience is excellent and people wait patiently for their turns to arrive at the table. The services are quick and its pocket friendly. One can easily have a wholesome meal at a pocket-friendly price.
This is such a beautiful place just a pure pure pure delight to have an authentic South Indian food here...
The dosa are so soft just melts in the mouth.. bisibille Bhat was just out standing .. also the idli pongal rice... basically everything here is just so delicious u don’t want to miss it at all.. make sure u end ur meal with a filter coffee that’s how ppl in south India also do on a regular basis..
the ambiance is simple but ancient looking.. This restaurant has been working strong ever since my parents were young so it’s almost 50 years or even longer but just a beautiful plce...
absolutely delightful if u love authentic south food..
Filtter Coffee is a must try
This place tends to be busy during rush hours,
so you'll have to wait for the table.
Must have:
IDLI PODI: 5/5, it's damn tasty tbh, so they have this roasted masala they put it on idli it's in orange color. It enhances the taste of this dish.
Filter coffee: 5/5, as usual this place never disappoints when it comes to filter coffee ✨.
Thank you for reading,
Enjoy you time.
The can find the most authentic south Indian food at this cafe. The place is compact but the food will make you forget about it. If you ever visit take the upper seating section which is more comfortable. The service is super fast and the food is on the table within no time.

Really really old joint and very famous.
It has long queues early morning therefore if you wish to visit please consider that.
It has great vibe and better food.
They dosas, the rasam, the idlis are great and so is everything else on the menu but the highlight is the pineapple sheera which is loaded with ghee.
If you are a slow eater or want to hangout for a considerable time then this is not your go as you can't sit here for long as there are people waiting for their turn.
The best place to have south Indian food this is the go to place in matunga.
Cute little place and properly utilised space.
It is very pocket friendly.
If you're a south Indian food lover it is a best place to hog in.
Service here is fast.
So we had ordered rasam vada and idli sambar which was so delicious and tasty.
And we ordered popular filtered Kaafi from their menu which was amazing.
Try once
U surely need to be patient to get a table... it is mostly crowded on anytime of the week end you go.. but surely the wait is not bad as the quick hot south indian food is worth it..
The legacy continues after years also rather it has improvised and added..
Filter coffee or the soothing hibiscus cooler drink is just perfect way to finish off hour meal...
No doubt on soft melting idlis and crisp crunchy vadas but not to miss is the poddi idlis ...
We ordered: Butter Idli Podi and Rasam Vada
Their butter idli podi is like no other!!! It's super duper yummy..the podi is perfect, I absolutely love their chutney, I always order more and more chutney, the idli is very soft too... its best for South Indian food!!
You have to try it!!
Great place to eat south Indian dishes.. tea was awsum and so was the dosa .the taste was very authentic. Felt like u we're in South and not in matunga road. Price is little on the higher side and it's always crowded however ol rate it 4/5/ updated menu image is added
This is one of the best place in Mumbai to have authentic South Indian dishes. I tried the classic Filter Coffee and I was blow away with just the aroma of it the taste was so perfect. Other than that I tried the classic Idili- Wada were good, next I had Masala Dosa and Butter Uttapa. The filling inside the Masala Dosa was delicious and overall both the dishes were absolutely amazing!
This place is budget friendly and staff is very nice, the only issue is the setting arrangement, this place is usually very crowded so it’s hard to get a table to yourself.
I visited there to have some south Indian stuff.
I liked mendu wada and mysore masala dosa the dosa was so fresh and it was made with pure ghee.fragrance of dosage with ghee was delicious
.
However the filter coffee was not as good was it before and cost is more of coffee as per taste.
Otherwise all stuff are good.
4/5
Had masala dosa which was very yummy. The potato bhaji in that was very tasty
Cafe Madras - this was my 2nd visit to this restaurant which is always beeming with people. All I would say foodies and lovers of South Indian Cuisine. Well, I was also one of them and we wanted to start our memorable girl gang trip with an awesome breakfast of idli-dosa-sambar-kaapi so we thought best place to go was to Cafe Madras. This place is famous for not just it's food which includes ravishing dosa, softest idli ever and most yummy sambar - but also for its filter Kaapi (coffee) well towards the end our stomach was full however our minds wanted to keep eating.
One of the best coconut chutneys, I have ever had - made from freshly grated coconut.
one of the best place to visit for south indian food with authentic taste.
try anything and everthing you feel and it will leave your taste buds with wow factor. the cost is so so reasonable that we 5 friends ordered most of the things in the menu we paid just 1100 bucks.
must try - Sheera, Madras Missal, uttapam & Filter coffee.
Its a must visit if you are in Matunga.
Visited this place on recommendation of my elder brother. This place has great filter coffee. The coffee had a dense flavour and left aromatic taste throughout the mouth . The set dosa was loaded with white butter and perfect with chutney . The masala dosa was also great. I was bit skeptical about their misal but it was really great. Must have
The weekend mornings are really good here.
Serve one of the best filter coffees in the town. Dosas are good too.a large variety of south India breakfast items can be seen. Place is clean and comfortable. The restaurant becomes busy on the weekends because of which service slows down.
Great place for quick bite, lunch and dinner with family. It is south Indian specialist. Service is quick, food is good, like vadas were crisp and hot. Only issue is space crunch, there is waiting, queue, sometimes you have to share the table. Not easy for large group or family. Nothing for ambiance as it is on King Circle, Matunga. But worth a visit once.
Awesome place. A must visit for a good south Indian breakfast. Friendly and prompt service. However there is waiting time to enter the restaurant as it is mostly crowded. There is sharing of tables which gives a sense or community
The best South Indian restaurant I have been to! Everything is simply perfect. The food, name it and it is delicious. Steam Idli, Medu Wada, Sada Dosa, Cheese Dosa, Set Dosa, Pineapple Sheera are a must have if you decide to visit this place. All the items are simply mouth watering. Filter Coffee is really great and should not be missed at all!

Cafe Madras is located at king circle Matunga east and is one of the best places to have south indian breakfast in Mumbai. This place is always crowded and you may also to have share your table. My personal favourite is their butter idli podi in which idli is extremely soft and it is served with gunpowder and coconut chutney on top and sambhar aside. You can also try dosas and must have their filter coffee. So all in all you should definitely visit Cafe Madras as it has amazing food, quick service and its totally pocket friendly!!
The Rawa Dosa was soooooooooo goood and delicious! Can’t wait to come back to Mumbai and go to Cafe Madras again.

I am a regular at this place for years and a hardcore fan of it. My favourite items are butter idli, mendu wada, butter sada dosa, mysore dosa, mysore masala dosa and the filter coffee out here. The butter they use is made by them and super white in colour and tasty. The service is quick and there is a mezzenine floor for eating too. There is always waiting out here so have some buffer time. Its closed on monday so plan accordingly.
Heaven for South Indian food . Cofee and dosa is so so good seriously .
Hyped? Kinda. We tried neer dosa which was decent, the chutney is very nice and they serve it with sweet grated coconut chutney. The Ragi masala dosa was nice. It was kinda heavy and filling. Filter coffee truly lives up to the hype, very strong and gives an instant kick.
On a normal workday, we decide to wait and have some Madarasi food. The cafe manager had a great rapport with his customers and was constantly engaging with his guests waiting to be seated. No tokens - no waitlists - he simply seats them first come first served - you have to take a seat allotted to you unless there’s free space available.
That we are now seated, we ordered for some Ghee Idli, Rasam Vada, Onion Rava Dosa and some Buttermilk. One by one, we relished their well cooked recipes and decided to sip some filter Kaapi.
The coffee was presented unique the coffee tumbler was barely the size of the ‘dabara’ (wide metal saucer with lipped walls). Besh Besh Kaapi na Cafe Madras thaan.
Best south indian food ever had
Upma Podi and Ghee roast dosa are to die for!
You will have to wait a bit but it'll be worth it. Definitely have idli podi. Melt in your mouth soft idlis. If you don't know anything just ask your server for the best recommendation and leave it to them to feed you the best of the best food this place has to offer.
It was indeed a breakfast delight! 😍
We tried
1) Butter idli podi- Idli was covered with podi masala and butter dipped in coconut chutney.
It was soft and delicious. Couldn't resist from ordering one more!
2) Onion Rava dosa - Dosa was fully cooked and Tasty
3) Pineapple Sheera- Sheera was loaded with Pineapple, dryfruits and Pure desi Ghee ( this had to be the best sheera i have tasted)
The ambience is simpli but the food is worth the money
Needless to say that it is one of the best places to try out South Indian food!

There are very few south indian restaurants specially in the vegetarian category which are so appreciated by people the way madras cafe is. They have the best of the known people visiting them in their little set up who come to relish authentic south indian food at all times.
Love the delicious food! It’s a legendary place for South Indian food. Thank you for the service and everyone must go!
Please update menu... It's old and misleading
Madras cafe is a well known south Bombay cafe which is serving city from many decades. They are famous for their south Indian breakfasts and other snacks.. No introduction required for this Iconic and Legendary outlet at Matunga East which serves authentic and good quality South Indian snacks from idli, medu vada, set dosa, masala dosa, pesurratu and the list is endless.
Through these years they have still maintained high quality with authentic taste. You may find the place little crowded on weekends and also before 11am if u visit. Need to share seat with others and that's mandatory. Do not miss their podi idli chutney, filter coffee, set dosa and bhise beli bhaat..
A perfect place to hangout with friends and enjoy awesome South Indian snacks.
Perfect for a South-Indian meal, their entire menu is amazing, only got the chance to click the bise bille bhaat, rest were eaten before they could be clicked. You can also purchase spices and masalas to cook up something at home with the same flavour.
Cafe Madras.
This place is my go to place for south Indian food cravings. You'll get authentic taste here. No doubt in that. The place is around 70 years old and it's still going on for a reason. I love their chutney. Tho they charge extra if you ask for extra.
You should must try "Butter Podi Idli".
The big reason why I'm giving this a 4 star is their service.
I really didn't like the behaviour of the staff. He was kinda rude and didn't felt like giving importance to the customer. I've seen many reviews complaining about this. And i also experienced it today.
I hope management sees this and does something.
If you are from Mumbai, you have to know this place. Very famous for its amazing, mouth-watering authentic south Indian food, this place is situated right in the heart of Matunga (which is anyways famous for its south Indian restaurants). I have been to this place a couple of times and every time the experience has been amazing. There is always a waiting list, so yes, be prepared for that. They have seating arrangements outside while you desperately watch the people sitting inside and hog upon the amazing food and try to telepathically communicate to them that "Please hurry up, we are also hungry :P".
Coming to the food, I guess there are no favorites here because everything is just amazing. Right from different types of idlis, vadas and upmas to the variety of dosas (rava, mysore, utthapam, neer, set, ragi and so on) and rice dishes. Its just about what you want to eat that particular moment. There is no way you are going to eat just one, Considering the waiting time and the super fast service, its like an episode of man vs food. You are on a clock, eat how much you can. because if you are not eating, there are people waiting to take the chair.
Amazing place, awesome food and very courteous service. :)
Cheers !!
Must visit this place at least once, whether u r big fan of South Indian food or not...
U will find lot of varieties in dosa, South Indian style rice n misal...
As I'm a big fan of South Indian food so for me taste of "Sambhar" is really imp n for which I'm impressed by cafe Madras...😉
Pudi Idli, pudi upma - 5/5 must try..😋
Onion uttapa, maysore masala n sada dosa - 4/5...
Place is small, so table sharing is der... And if u visit on Sunday's or any public holiday den half n hour waiting is confirm... N if u don't like to wait then please visit during odd days..
Cafe Madras
Known for one of the greatest places in mumbai when it comes to authentic south indian delicacies. Cafe madras is real gem. It's located near maheshwari udyan and is at walkable distance from matunga railway station.
Been here many times and their onion dosa being my favorite along with other delicious dishes like neer dosa, upma podi and uttapam. Also filter coffee at this place is highly recommended. One of the best coffees you'll get to try.
Taste and hospitality at this place is truly appreciable.
Kudos!!
