Went there in a spur of a moment decision as most restaurants in Mumbai were not allowing to dine in. But when I spoke to the manager to make reservations, he was most kind and we booked a table for 5. The restaurant is extremely beautiful. Centrally located within The Orchid, the feel is very rustic and makes you feel very comfortable. We went while the IPL was on, hence tried the new IPL cocktails dedicated to individual teams. They were delicious. Tried some of the best authentic South Indian dishes ever and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and the quantity. Great care was taken by our host Mr. Rahul M.S. and kudos to him to serve us throughout the evening with a smile. Hoping to get back to the restaurant again once things go back to normal. For the food and definitely for the hospitality.

My best friend treated me for her birthday over here. I'm quite delighted that she opted for this place. We visited this place at the time for lunch. The ambience is so authentic with the Carnatic music playing in the background. The staff was super courteous esp. Mr. Jigar. I would like to thank him on behalf of my whole group who made us feel so royal and welcomed. The aura is vibrant and pleasing. We decided to go for Non- veg thali. For starters they served Kozhi rasam (Chicken Broth). And the next item for starters was Kozhi Melagu Varuval (Peppery Chicken). The soup was flavour full and the chicken was tender and super juicy. For main course we were served the beautiful looking thali. The thali consisted the following item (For reference you can see the picture I am referring right to left.)
1. Appam (Rice & Lentil Pancake)
2. Kal Dosai (Rice & Lentil Dosa)
3. Meen Moilee (Fish Curry)
4. Spicy Chicken Curry(Home Styled Chicken Curry)
5. Masa Coondapur (Lamb in Coconut Gravy)
6. Poriyal (Tempered Vegetable)
7. Chittranam (Flavoured Rice)
On the top
1. Plain Curd
2. Thair Sadam (Curd Rice)
3. Payasam (Sweetened Milk)
The food was lip-smacking good. Really enjoyed every item in the thali. Also, they serve wide range of authentic pickles (the variety ranging from chilli, mango, chicken to prawns and so on). Surely a must visit. The price is bit on the heavier side but totally value for your money.

Interesting elements of décor, fabulous food and service with a personal touch.
The path leading to the restaurant was filled with numerous interesting elements such as swathes of fabric in lovely traditional patterns, replica of a wooden houseboat, statue of a Kathakali dancer, an ornate bicycle, etc. The restaurant had an ethnic and cozy feel with wooden furniture, lanterns, instruments of Indian classical music, etc.
For our meal, we'd ordered bhuna ghost, home style vegetable curry, spicy tangy prawns, rice and appams. The food was splendid. The bhuna ghost was cooked to perfection with the mutton well done in a thick and delicious gravy. The home style vegetable curry (naadan curry) was creamy and subtly flavoured. The fresh, soft appams were made at a live counter which the staff set up right next to our table so we could have them hot off the counter. We ended our meal with filter coffee, which was milky and yet had a robust flavour without being bitter.
The food was served on banana leaves cut to size and placed in each plate, which isn't a common sight. The staff encouraged to use our fingers and eat in the traditional Indian way. They even brought a bowl full of warm water to the table to help us wash our hands just before the meal even though they had given us sanitiser when we'd entered.
The staff was friendly and attentive without being overbearing or intrusive in any way. Bachan, the restaurant incharge, was constantly around to make sure everything was in place and that we had a good time. Chef Bala graciously came over to our table to answer questions we had about options in the menu, help us with recommendations and understand any requests for customisation. From getting beverages on the table within minutes of being seated to bringing a washing bowl over to the table and always being around to serve helpings, Rahul (the staff member serving us) managed everything so promptly and efficiently that we never had to ask him for anything
Taking plenty of photographs, relishing the food and being pampered by the staff, we truly enjoyed ourselves. The food was fantastic and the staff made our experience even better with their attention to detail as well as their warm behaviour.

So the pendamic is taking it too long & it's just ruined every industry out there. But after some relaxation government decided to reopen 3 & 5 stars hotel's with 33% occupancy. So taking advantage of this i visited orchid hotel for 1 day stay. Hospitality was impressive i was not expecting this type of hygiene from any hotel.

After taking a shower & resting for a while I came to know that they have also reopen their one of the restaurant which was south of vindhyas. So i went there to have my lunch. Guess what there was also many layer of sanitation done while I was entering.

I was amazed by the process & because of that i was less praraniod. Staff were completely covered with face mask, gloves. Also the menu was being uploaded on a website which was impressive.

Ambience was beautiful also it was lively because they had a musician who was playing a live music. Such kind of service in this pendamic was truly amazing. So i was confused with the order but the manager suggested me to try Non veg thali so i ordered a thali.

Thali was not over loaded but it was adequate. Thali consist of 1 - Mutton gravy, 2- Chicken gravy, 3- fish gravy & some kheer, curd & salad. Also there were n number of breeds & roti available. Mutton was best among all in this thali but fish curry was not that great. Quality was highly impressive.

Rate was high if you compare it with other famous thali but the situation & the clean service of the staff didn't bother me much. I was highly impressed with the staff & i will surely recommend everyone to visit this place for a change.

What a lovely weekend gateway. A much needed break after ages.

The Orchid is the perfect destination for Stay and Dine, in this Five Star, Luxury, Ecotel Hotel of total 372 rooms located very conveniently near the old airport in Mumbai.

I've booked a huge room on the 5th floor, beautiful view of dense greenery, along with a great view of the Airport runway.

The authority and the staffs are maintaining Social Distancing strictly.
When I've entered the beautiful property, near Mumbai Airport, my body temperature and all other details are checked by security in-charge.

In the reception area, social distancing is maintained very strictly, while I was filling my forms.

3 types of fresh Detox water - Lemon-Ginger, Cucumber-Carrot, Mint leaves water are kept in the reception area.

For the room service facilities, big tables are kept beside every room entrance doors. Any food ordered thru Room service, are kept there by the Room service staffs, they don't enter the rooms to serve the food now. This is the new normal.

South of the Vindhyas, one of the best destination for traditional food by Chef Bala is available now for the hotel guests.
Harshad Naik, Restaurant Manager is very helpful and cooperative.
Live music is played by sitar player, during lunch and dinner time.

All the hotel and restaurant staffs are wearing masks and gloves.
sanitizer stands are kept in the entrance and almost every where.

Live chaat counter is there, served my favorite delicious chaats.

My awesome South Indian lunch, prepared by Chef Bala.

Rasam_kozhi rasam(chicken)
Starter_pepper chicken

Maincourse ---
Meen curry -- pomfret curry
Chicken stew
Mutton coondapur

In Breads- appam, Kal Dosa, phulkas
Rice - pooni rice, steamed rice , flavored rice , Sambar

Yummy Desserts - gulab jamun
Meter coffee.

Total covers in the Restaurant is 100, but for maintaining social distancing they made it now only 36 covers in the restaurant.

Current Room tariff is -- 4500 INR plus taxes
Which includes 1 night stay in the luxurious hotel, along with Royal treats for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I enjoyed my stay during the monsoon.
Totally feeling rejuvenated and relaxed.

Vadakam! Wanna eat something healthy, spicy and chatpata where "chatpata" being an important taste? Why not go to something like Idli Vada the perfect combo.Originating in South India but being loved all over India.
The sambhar served is bit south and bit north and gets dissolve in your mouth and you can feel the taste even after you finishes your meal. Idlis and vadaas were very fluffy and soft and could be eaten raw. And coconut chatni will make you feel the taste of south India and you will definitely find it finger licking good. 😌

In Main course, they served us a huge thali which included green mutton gravy, kokum fish gravy, tangy prawns gravy, thick and spicy chicken gravy, delicious crab meat gravy and creamy vegetable stew.

In breads, they have freshly steamed appams, Phulkas and malabar Paratha.

South of Vindhyas specializes in serving South Indian cuisine. They have a variety of sit-down buffet options which include veg buffet, sea-food buffet or combination buffet of seafood, chicken & mutton!

Also you can enjoy a live ghazal night while relishing the lip-smacking food.

I tried the combination buffet served here which included 3 types of appetizers, mocktail, thali with all the main course gravies, rice and appams/phulkas/malabari paratha.

Appetizers:
Rawa Fish Fry: Fish is deep fried in rawa making it crispy from outside and soft and flavoursome from inside. This is my favourite appetizer from their menu

Pepper chicken: Small pieces of chicken are tossed with onion, tomatoes and south indian spices. This is a semi dry appetizer.

Prawns fry: Medium-sized prawns are tossed with special masalas and chopped onion and corriander leaves.

Combination thali gravies:
- It includes green mutton coconut based gravy which is delicious.
- Creamy vegetable stew can be best relished with appams.
- Crabmeat gravy is flavoursome and made with perfect blend of spices.
- Surmai fish gravy has a tangy kokum flavour and is a scrumptious preparation by the chef.
- Chicken gravy is thick and has a dominance of South Indian special spices.
- Prawns gravy is made with chopped tomatoes, onions and coconut.
- Payasam served with this thali is delicious.

For rice, they have options of basmati rice, flavoured rice and sambhar rice.

In rotis, you can select from appams, phulkas & Malabari Parathas.

In desserts, they served us Ras Malai, Gulab Jamun & Ice-cream!

Overall, the food is delicious and maintains the authentic taste of the South Indian cuisine!

Located near Airport, The Orchid Hotel at Vile Parle is one of the most renowned 5 star ecotel hotels in Asia. The wonderful 70 Foot indoor waterall awaits to welcome you as you enter the hotel.

We happen to visit at one of their restaurants i.e. South of Vindhayas. If food is your thing then you are in the right place. Their culinary experts strive to deliver cutting edge and gastronomic dining experience to every guest. It is indeed known as one of the best place to experience south indian dishes in Mumbai.

It promises and delivers the authentic specialty as well as some fusion recipes. The dining hall is a mangalorean styled estate house and the decor is filled with artworks that reminds you of south. Also surrounded by southern instrumental music. We were feeling as if we are already in South. The host and stewards are dressed in typical kerala dressing style.

We happen to try out their non vegeterian buffet. Starting of with Kozhi rasam which is a hot peppery chicken broth true to its colour and taste, we tried out their extensive menu which included dishes like Yetti Ajadina (Dry masala prawns), Kozhi melagu varual (Peppery chicken), Meen varual (pan seared fish). We also tried our hands on Squid, Lamb, Crab. Accompanied by Neer Dosa and their flavourful mocktails. I had a enjoyable experience here with all the lovely hospitality. For your information, the dishes are originated from Tamil Nadu, Andhra and Kerala.

The service is available at every beck of your call. The staff is professional and i am sure, you will leave from here with smiling faces. The warmth of the restaurant will make you want to visit it again.

Happy Eating :)

We were at South of Vindhyas restaurant at the Orchid Hotel. It's a beautiful looking restaurant with dim lighting and music being played live. The seats are comfortable and the table has a candle which makes it even better. The service was upto the mark and the staff were courteous and polite.

We had a baba elaichi mocktail and a strawberry mocktail. Both of them were nice and enjoyable.

The cuisine served at the restaurant is South Indian.

We had a chicken rasam soup to start our dinner. It was yummy. The taste was mild like a chicken soup and not as heavily spiced like a rasam. Its in between flavour. But I liked it.

The appetizers we were served were Pepper Chicken, Prawns dry fry and Fish Rawa Fry. All these appetizers were perfectly made and we enjoyed them a lot.

We were also served the welcome drink called Paanakam which is jaggery mixed with spiced water.

For mains we were served the Thali. The thali comprised of Malabar Parotta, Appam, Kal Dosa, Phulka as the breads. Then rice included Ponni rice, basmati rice and yellow rice.

The gravies included were Madras Fish curry, Kanava Fry(Squid fry), Eral curry( prawns), Nandu Varuval (Crab) , Kozhi curry( Chicken), Massa stew( Lamb) and a Vegetable stew.

All these gravies were delicious but the best one being the Massa Stew and the Vegetable stew. The chicken curry was a touch mildly spiced. The crab and fish curry were both good. The squid was overcooked and rubbery but also the preparation was not the best.

For dessert we had Moong Dal payasam which was not well made. It was sludgy and porridge texture and not like payasam. Would need some corrections.

The other dessert we tried were Rasmalai, Gulab Jamun both of which were decent.

The best one was the Chocolate ice cream and Mango ice cream. Both of these were perfect and the best dessert of all they had to serve.

The combo dinner is priced at around 2100 bucks which is a great deal considering its inside a luxurious hotel. The food was good and enjoyable.

Till then Bon Appetit!!

My love affair with The Orchid Hotel,Mumbai began as a 12 year old food loving girl, when I read Vitthal Kamath's Idli Orchid aani Mee ( इडली ऑर्किड आणि मी !) and I have always pounced on any chance of visiting this Hotel ever since!

My visit to South Of Vindhyas - The Orchid, Mumbai for their #SeafoodFestival was an exemplification of what Orchid is all about - Good food, better service and the warmth of the passion and love that the owners and patrons have for this place.

The most appealing thing about the food here is its authenticity. They have managed to bring authentic preparations from across south India

You can either opt for A La Carte (with the choice of fish and the kind of preparation) or you can go for their Sit Down Buffet wherein they are serving the very best of their seafood preparations in a sit down set menu!

My favorites for the night were the amazeballs Prawns Masala Fry, the Pomfret Fry and the Goan Curry

All in all, the Seafood Festival at, The Orchid Hotel has managed to capture the essence of Seafood culture in India in its food, drinks as well as ambience and this is surely worth a visit!

Untill next time!

South of Vindhyas is located at Vile Parle near domestic airport inside Orchid Hotel. It is at ground floor. This restaurant is based on South Indian Theme as well as koli style too. They serve Andhra, Kerala, South Indian dishes here. The ambiance is really beautiful with sophisticated interiors and the stewards are dressed in the authentic South Indian style. They are known for their seafood specially and their restaurant is dolled with all fish nets and boat and South Indian touch as well. As soon as you enter you will find a beautiful rangoli welcoming you. The stewards are really welcomung they help you in making comfortable . They have live music as well. The sitar and tabla combination is really soothing setting the right mood. They have thali as well as alacarti options are also there as per your preference. The table was set up with cute candles and steel glass and plates . We started off with our scrumptious meal with mocktails blue lagoon and sex on the beach. Followed along with tempting starters dry masala prawns, peppry chicken, rava fish fry. Rahul and Karunesh were really sweet and attentive took good care of us. We ordered for two non veg thalis. They have veg thali option as well. The non veg thali includes kanava fry (squid preparation), eral curry (prawns), nandu varuval ( crab ) , chapla iggaru(fish), chicken mappas, mutton sambar combined with appam, kal dosa, phulka or various types of rice. For desserts we also had we have nei payasm, rasmalai, gulab jamun, choice of ice cream. Each thali costs 2100+ taxes. They have variety of wines and drinks as well. The restaurant is really amazing with beautiful interiors . I would like to recommend this place for family dinner and date nights. Quite flashy price but service and food is best.

So I finally made it to the Sea-Feast going out at this restaurant. Had heard about it through friends and even saw it on social media. So I am glad I made it and must say it was a scrumptious meal. To start with I really liked the ambience of the place, keeping in mind the sea connect, they themed it accordingly with fishing nets, all the stewards, waiters and waitresses were dressed koli style. They even organized a live performance that is a koli dance, it was very lively and audience definitely enjoyed it. The dining table was also decorated sweetly with candles, sand and shells. I visited the place with my mother, who herself is a big sea food fan. So coming to what we had:
Papads served with a variety of in-house prepared chutneys.
*SOUP*
Prawn Rasam- piping hot, spicy rasam with prawns, was a good start to our evening
*APPETIZERS*
1. Prawns dry masala- one of the best dishes of the evening, the south style masala clicked with us
2. Fish fry- crispy fried fish pieces, the fish used here was River Sole
3. Chicken pepper- this was Andhra style and was spicy
*MAINS*
We had a seafood thali. The variety was great, different kinds of meat in different preparations served in sufficient quantity.
The thali consisted of:
Mee varuval- a fried fish preparation made using freshly ground spices and masalas
*ROTIS*
Malabari paratha
Appams
Kal roti
Rice- Tomato rice
Coming to the curries-
1. Kundhal ularithiyathi- a squid preparation
2. Prawns roast
3. Nandu pepper- a crab preparation
4. Meen mappas- a fish preparation
5. Kozhi ghassi- a chicken preparation
6. Massa stew- a mutton preparation
7. Veg stew
So you see it's a huge spread but all the dishes were cooked nicely and had authentic taste and flavours. They kept in mind the traditional recipes and cooked them.
*DESSERT*
Mango payasam- loved it...it's sweet but it's yummy, you get rich ghee taste.
Ended the meal with a strong filter coffee.
They also had a variety of home-made, in-house prepared pickles to accompany the meals.
The appams were made live in front of us.
At the entrance the displayed fishes with their respective names so we know what are we eating, very informative.
Special thanks to Mr Vishal and Mr Harshad who looked after us, and were courteous and helpful.
Would highly recommend this place.

Just visited South Of Vindhyas at The Orchid and they had a seafood festival going on. Let me begin by saying such a wonderful ambience created. The staff was dressed in traditional koli clothes and they had boats nets and various fishes as decoration. I felt like I was literally sitting in the koliwada being served fresh fish from the ocean.

While there, Dakota staff helped us in making some really good choices. Special thanks to Harshad, Vishal, Kunal, Aditya Raj and Sameer.

To begin we called for some delicious starters. Since it was the seafood festival we decided to call for non vegetarian starters. We ordered:

Fried fish: Delicious rava fried boneless fish that was served piping hot along with onion lime and a lovely green chilli. The fish was superbly fresh. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

Papad plate with dips: there were two types of papad and three types of dips. There was curd chutney, tomato chutney & muramba. This pairing of crispy and creamy was very clever and tasty.

Pepper chicken: We tried some pepper chicken that was served on a small tawa. As the name suggests was very peppery and had a good flavour to it.

Prawns ghasi: Orange thick sauce prawns with coconut and curry flavour just added a complete seafood awesomeness. You should totally try it.

In main course we decided to call for thali.
The thali we called for had so much variety. I definitely aur jeetu try the chicken curry, the Prawns curry, the fish curry, the lamb curry as well as the mix vegetable curry. The thali also comes with fried fish which was king fish.

We paired all these curries with Kerala paratha, appam and dosas. Truly had a foodie experience that I will remember.

Lastly we finished our meal with desert. We had rasmalai and that was delicious as well.

between all this food we also did try the mojito and the Bombay masala which is a based mocktail.

I had the sea buffet here. Really liked the starters especially fried fish and prawn chettinad (i think). Prawn soup was also very good to start off the meal with. The main course was a lot for me (i like to eat less and i had already had a lot of starters). But i tried all that they had served - veg stew, squid, crab meat, prawns and fish curry. All in all, good experience

South of Vindhyas is a fine dining located at The Orchid hotel in Vile Parle east. The restaraunt is at the ground floor of the hotel and has a very welcoming vibe and ambience. Their specialty is mainly in dishes from Andhra, Kerela and South.
They recently have started their seafood festival where in they are serving the very best of different flavours of Coast and South. The interiors are well decorated as the theme of the seafood festival and they also have a live appam kitchen. Also as a part of the theme, at the end of the day there is a small koli performance done by the staff which added more charm to the entire seafood festival theme experience.

As we entered we were welcomed by the staff and Mr.Vishal, our host for the evening, took care of everything really well. Given below are the list of items included in the seafood festival and which were served and tried by me:

~Welcome Drinks
• NEER MORE (Flavored Buttermilk) & PANAKKAM (Sweet Tangy Cooler)

• PAPAD- An assorted platter of different types of papad accompanied with dry chillis tossed in masala.

~Appetizers-
• PRAWNS SOUP- Nothing could be a better appetizer than this. It's really savoury and hard to not finish :)
• CHEF'S CHOICE SEAFOOD STARTER
(Prawns & Fish Preparation)-
This consisted of fish fry and prawns masala. Both tasted fresh and the meat of fish just melts in your mouth.

~Main course (Thali) -
Consists of 7 different types of curry preparation namely-
- MEE VARUVAL (Fish Preparation)
- SQUID ROAST ( Squid Preparation)
- MALABAR PRAWNS CURRY (Prawns
Preparation)
- CRAB ROAST (Crab Preparation)
- CHAPALA PULUSU (Fish Preparation)
- KOZHI MELUGU CHETTINAD (Chicken Preparation)
- MASSA CONDAPUR (Lamb Preparation)

As well as different types of rice and breads like:

- BASMATI RICE / FLAVOURED RICE
PONNI RICE & SAMBAR- (P.S- Flavoured rice is a must try)

- APPAM/ KAL DOSA/ PHULKA/ PARATHA (Appam as well as the paratha tasted the best!)

And finally PAYASAM was included in desserts.
Also there is a live pickle cart which consists of various types of authentic pickles to choose from.

This whole special seafood festival menu is at a set price of 2200 which according to me is pretty good if compared quality wise. It has recently started and is a pretty good experience to try on. Every dish served from the welcome drink to the dessert was totally yum and is a treat to eat! ❤
I had a great experience here. Special thanks to Mr. Harshad for the great hospitality.
Thanks team!
Cheers!!

This fine dine is currently hosting an amazing Seafood Festival and let me tell you, you just can't afford to miss it if you are a Non Veg lover.
We started with Prawn Rasam and 2 mocktails: Orange-Blueberry n Coffee-Kokum and the latter's combo is my favorite.
The seafood thali had Crab, 2 types of fishes, Chicken, Lamb, Squids and the awesome Mango Payasam!
For desserts, we had Rasmalai and Gulab Jamun and the Jamun was so juicy and oozing with Chasni. Loved it.
Overall, a great experience and this is a Must Visit Place people!!

If you are looking for the standard conventional Idli and Dosa, this is NOT the place for you. This is a place for an authentic South Indian meal starting with pappadam and ending with caffee (coffee).
The ambience and the decor is just right with the servers dressed in a semi traditional attire. They are helpful and ready to suggest what you can order.
They have a variety of 8 pickles all are great. And must be tried. Specially the Lotus stem one, which is really unique.
Their vegetable curries, the rasam, rice preparations and the sweets are all perfect. The only reason why I haven't given a 5/5 is that they should have kept an option of plain dosa and idli, as we had kids with us who were not interested in the South Indian food thali type of menu. Rest all is perfect and worth every penny they charge...👌👌

The beautiful Ambience, the service, the staff, and most importantly the amazing and delicious food everything was super fantastic. I was bowled over by the amazing ambience. Totally i felt i was somewhere in kerala, just too good. Secondly the staff and their beautiful attire which they were wearing, typical attire from south india and their service and the politeness of each and every staff. Just too good.

Felt so homely i would say.
Now talking about the food, we started with some starters which were
1) Dry Prawns Masala
2) Peppry Chicken
3) Fish Fry
And the hot and amazing 4) Chicken Rassam.
Everything was nicely served in a plate on the banana leaf and it really looked so good.
Well, we had some great mocktails along

South of Vindhyas, a truly authentic place that hosts a variety of delicious preparations inspired from the famous south indian cuisines.

Located in The Orchid hotel, it's one of the three restaurant that the hotel offers. Its located on the ground floor.

Right from entrance of the place where the staff welcomes you, South of Vindyas manages to mesmerize you with their decor, the staff all dressed in proper authentic clothing and the soothing music in the background.

I went on to try their amazing breakfast spread, you certainly should not miss it. All of the items are veg, but they are simply amazing!!!

To begin with their items are divided in three sections, their indian live breakfast section followed by some gujrati breakfast items and finally some fruits, cake and crossaints.

They also have flavoured lassi, milk and cornflakes as well.

In their live breakfast section, they first serve a platter of dishes that is a miniature version of all the live items that you can taste from.Once you like anyone of them, you can tell the staff and they will prepare it for you and serve it.

All the breakfast items were good, my favourites would be their Vithal dosa and their masala puri with bhopala bhaji.

Also not to forget their filter coffee, its the best.

They have this idea of breakfast with birds, whilst your having breakfast you can peep outside the windows where the birds outside sit on barks. Its a really beautiful view as well.

The overall breakfast spread is 700.But it is totally worth every rupee.

My knowledge about South Indian food was restricted to only idlis and dosas until I visited this amazing place.

Recently visited South of Vindhyas which is located on the ground floor of The Orchid Hotel close to the domestic airport.

This place is truly heaven for all the south Indian food lovers.!!
As soon as you enter this place you would be greeted warmly with the staff wearing south Indian attire.
The ambience here is beautiful giving it a very classic and traditional feel.

Live singing with orchestra keeps playing which definitely makes you feel calm and happy.

So before we could start our meals we were helped with water and a bowl to wash our hands .

As we settled we were first served with crispy papadams with three different chutneys.

Next we were served a Kozhi Rasam which is typically a chicken broth.

Later for the starters they got in Peppery Chicken, Fish Fry and Prawns masala south Indian style. Each appetizer was soo good, full of flavours and delicious. My favorite out of them was the crispy(basa) fish fry which tasted super delicious with green mint chutney.

After the starters they got in some chilled drinks before the mains could be served.
Mumbai masala and virgin mojito were served which was chilled , refreshing and got us ready for the scrumptious mains .

For the mains we were served a south India thali consisting of :

Kari Melagu Curry ( Lamb Curry)
Kozhi Perattel ( Chicken Curry)
Madras Fish Curry
Nandu Varuval ( Crab meat preparation)
Kanava Fry ( Crispy Squids)
Eral Curry ( Prawns curry)

Breads served were :
Appam
Dosa
Malabari paratha
Phulka

Payasam (sweet rice pudding)

There is a separate pickle counter consisting of various in house collections of pickles consisting of Ginger, Prawns, chicken, lemon and many more. Do try them all ...it's definitely worth it!!

Finally after such a heavy meal we were left with very little space for desserts but couldn't miss trying the famous filter coffee from here which was simply the best !!!

I definitely had such a great time over here .. This place makes you feel homely and definitely happy !!!!

A special mention to the entire staff here for being so helpful and courteous and for their quick service ...

One of my favorite places to hangout with friends and family be it a simple dinner or a midnight buffet, so this time was tempted to try their breakfast menu... Was there at approx 8 in the morning and was greeted by the wonderful staff with warmth, was surprised to see so many people at that hour of the day... the place as people are aware is a stones throwaway from the domestic airport... They had 50+ items for breakfast, I tried different varieties of Dosa, Idlis, Rassam Vada, missal pav, Kothimbir Vadi... and to top it up the amazing Filter coffee.... I'm sure to visit this place soon again with friends for the other mouth watering delicasies... Harshad, Vishal and the entire team is doing a fab job...

Orchid is a beautiful hotel situated right in the middle of mumbai city and has been well known to one and all since years. It’s like a grand heritage property which is based right near the airport. They have many in-house restaurants which serve some great food. They have a roof top diner, a buffet place and an authentic South Indian restaurant called south of Vindhyas which is my favourite. Have been to this restaurant several times for lunch and dinner as they serve some lip smacking food. It’s been a favourite with the guests we have from abroad too. Each time they visit us we make sure to get them here for a delectable meal. The staff here is extremely warm and kind. We love the warmth and homely feel we get here. Harshad, Vishal and their team are all absolutely courteous and attentive. We tried the breakfast this time and we loved the humongous spread.
The dishes worth a try are the vithal dosa, I loved the white butter presentation on this. A melt in the mouth dosa. Do try this without fail. There was also a good choice in fruits, juices, cereals, croissants, khandvi, dhokla, thalipeeth, chillas, dosas, idlis, wadas, Puri bhaji, kachoris, appams, upma, sheera, paniyaram and the best of all was the methi toast and filter coffee.

We loved it and look forward to another visit here soon.

Thalipeeth, poha, misal along with medu wada, rasam wada, thatte idli, vithal dosa, Puri bhaji, Puri & Stew, pineapple sheera and gol roti. All of it was so delicious and soul food. Had a wide majority of choices for breakfast to name a few items- thatte idli, thalippeth, poha, misal pav, khaman dhokla, jalebis, khandvi, methi toast, coin idli, pineapple sheera, venkatesh dosa, vitthal dosa, kothimbir vadi. Ofcourse this list is not inclusive of all the items, the list goes on and on...
I loved the presentation of vithal dosa with a little sliver of banana leaf folded. Once unfolded it reveals white butter that is spread in the soft dosa. Methi toast was very unique, presented in triangle cuts with a dot of sweet chutney. Thatte idli just melts in your mouth. Coffee is to die for and best of all is the service and attention to small detail for the presentation, not to forget the banana leaf spread on the platter served.

3. Starters (You get to choose what you want)

This was my first visit to Vindhyas with a large bunch of girlfriends to celebrate a frds birthday on Lunch . we opted for the all Veg Buffet . Well the ambience was just fine , the musicians were good to put the house lively thoh they kept on shuffling the genre . The service  was very slow . They could not serve our large group ,hence than the captain was pitched in . special thanxs to Vishal & rahul .

The Food :
refreshing drink of fresh Gauve
Starters : veg pattice , dal vada , medu vada -Rasam --, the best among all was indeed medu vada
main course :avial ,poriyal ,stew,Payassam ,curd rice , curd , salad , appam , kal dosa , phulka, cabbage kootu...

Appam was the best .Curd rice was stale , mix veg was good , Payassam was cardamom flavoured sweet dish . good enough .

than -Lemon rice , basmati rice ,ponni rice ......tasted only the lemon rice which was very sour .

Desserts : Gulab jamun , Ras malai . Gulab jamun not upto the mark & Ras malai sans any dryfruits .

A chocolate cake was served on request ,  a kind gesture indeed.

Overall a moderate experince . Had gone with high expectations but not value for money .
South Indian food lovers can scout for better options .

To strt with, the ambience here is amazing. The decor and the arrangements will definitely take you to the southern part of India. Thumbs up for the ambience and atmosphere.

Coming to food, we started of with chicken broth. Gave a nice homely feel.
Then came the starters: Pepper chicken, fried fish(basa), prawns in the typical south masala, uttapam balls and kothimir wadi. Star dishes were the non-veg dishes.
Kothimir wadi turned out to be plain.

Coming to the main course: It's the unlimited thali system
Combination thali with 6 non veg and two veg dishes.
6 non veg had the prawn curry, fish curry, chicken curry, lamb, squids fry, and crab curry.
Fish curry was very tangy. And the prawn curry was not up to the mark and the squid was a lil too crisp
But the remaining were a hit. Top notch for sure.

The two veg dishes were veg stew and payasum(pradhaman).
Both were tasty.

Breads served were: Malabari paratha, neer dosa and appam.
In that the combination of appam and stew tasted amazing. However the neer dos was a put off..not something you will expect when you visit a south Indian restaurant. It was not as soft as it should be.
The deserts were gulab jamun, ice creams, rasmalai and dates halwa..dates halwa was something new and worth to try .

Overall it's a fine dine place with the live sitar and tabla performance giving it a nice dinning experience

South of Vindhyas is located inside the Hotel Orchid. The restaurant is on the ground floor. The ambience leading to the restaurant was great.

South of Vindhyas have decorated the exteriors and interiors to give you the south of India vibes. The staff is dressed in Mundu and shirt for guys with a scarf around their neck and female dressed in Saree. They also had a LIVE orchestra which was similar to the traditional singing. The fun part was the sitarist playing the English rhytm on his instrument accompanied with a tabla. The tables are decorated with a red cloth, plates have a leaf on top.

We opted for a combination thali which was priced at 2100 + taxes.

It started with a chicken broth which was thin with shredded chicken. They call Kohzi Rasam.

Followed by two drinks, I got a chance to try both. These were buttermilk (NEER MOR) and tangy cooler (PANNAKAM)

We were then served with a series of starters which we could choose from. Since we friends had different tastes we ordered our separate portions. But the varities were:
1. Pepper chicken
2. Prawn Masala dry
3. Basa Rawa fry
4. Veg starter (not sure what it was)

For the main course, we were given a Thali with a variety of bowls:
1. Dal
2. Veg Stew
3. Salad
4. Crab Masala (Crab meat crushed and mixed with the masala) - NANDU VARUVAL
5. Squids oil fry ( overcooked squids ) - KANAVA FRY
6. Fish masala curry : MEEN CURRY
7. Prawn curry: ERAL CURRY
8. Chicken gravy: KOZHI PERRATEL
9. Lamb with coconut curry - MUTTON THENGA PAL CURRY

Breads:
1. Malabhar paratha
2. Appam
3. Neer dosa

We didn't opt for the rice as we had been for dinner.

For Desserts:
1. Gulab Jamun: Hot Jamuns with sugar syrup
2. Rabdi: Two pieces
3. Butterscotch Ice cream
4. Chocolate Ice cream
5. Dates Halwa

Overall the Thali has a great variance to choose from. Their starters for Fish and Prawns were just awesome.

This restaurant is an absolute haven for any lover of South indian food. I expected them to serve only veg food, but to my surprise, they served non-vegetarian food as well.

I started of with the pepper chicken appetiser. I loved the masala used for this dish as it was made in proper south indian style. Next I tried the chicken soup which truly tasted homemade and therefore delicious.

For the main dish I had to have an authentic south indian non-veg thali. This thali was served with five different non-veg items including seafood, chicken and lamb gravies. I enjoyed every one of them. I also loved the payasam in particular, which was a freshly prepared south indian sweet dish.

I also loved the tangy cooler welcome drink that was served at the start. What made my dinner even more enjoyable we as the live traditional music that was playing that day.

Some cuisines just become your favorite without realizing you start going to places that serve the same. Recently I visited South of Vindhyas and found myself spoilt for choices with the variety of dishes they had to offer.

So for the starters this is what I ordered :
Fish fry ( Basa tawa fry ), Basa fish marinated and fried in rawa, the marination was really good and nice big pieces of fish, the quanity also was good.

This place servers you main course in Thali system, so you can have a variety of dishes at a given time all g with the choice of roti, paratha, uppam etc.

In the Thali you get, crab (the fleah is removed from the shell) - dry masala which is well marinated, prawn curry - one jumbo prawn but the gravy was very tangy so didnt quite enjoy it. The lamb gravy - an orange gravy with tender lamb pieces it went well with the uppam, veg. stew - simple but yet divine, again goes well with uppam. Squid fry - the squids were over fried and was very hard to chew, didnt enjoy it. Payasam - authentic sweet dish of the southern region, really well made, relished it till the last spoon. All the above were the dishes in the thali.

Ordered for a special dessert - date halwa, this the first time I tried it and it was really good.

They also have good drinks, non alcoholic I.e chass & tangy cooler. I preferred the tangy cooler.

The overall dining experience was not up to the mark there is room for improvement also the service was slow.

Our Review: 5 / 5.

Started in the year 2000, #southofvindhyas is named to celebrate the famous cuisines of the south, promises and delivers authentic local specialities. Dr Kamath has curated the best breakfast menu in India and more than 100 parrots come in every morning to enjoy the feast. Following India’s tradition to remain seated during the course of your meal they have come up with the concept of a sit-down buffet. Talking about the food we really loved their Tamil Nadu Special Kerai Vada, Palkatti Vattal which are veg starters. For the Non-vegetarians you should check out their Kerala Chilli Chicken and Dry Masala Prawns. Lip Smacking Vegetable Meedly serves its name right. Chef Bala’s Chicken is really good. They are famous for their authentic thalis we tried both veg as well as non-veg thali and they are utterly delicious. They also serve amazing prawns biryani. They have a live appam trolley for tasty appam. Moving on to desserts we tried their Banana Fritters a delight from Kerala, Payasam which is traditional sweetened milk and lastly tender pan frozen bar (kulfi) which is really refreshing. .

The name South of Vindhyas, pertains to the fact this place serves the cuisine from the four states that are south to the Vindhya mountains viz. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.

Situated in The Orchid Hotel this is the perfect place if you want to enjoy some authentic South Indian local food as well as some delicious fusion dishes. The ambiance is nothing short of royal.

A beautiful entrance, where you are greeted by the hostess dressed in a typical, white saree, not only her but the whole staff os dressed in a South Indian attire which just gives you the complete South Indian experience. The staff is amazing, helped us understand the cuisine and made sure we had a good time.

Love the sit-down buffet concept. It's a proper buffet alright, but you don't have to get up from the table, the food itself is brought to you on trolleys and served, and amazing food from the menu expertly curated by the chef Mr Bala Subramanian.

Before we started our meal, we were helped with bowls and one of the staff members poured water for us to wash our hands and get ready to enjoy the meal. Even after the meal finger bowls were given for hand washing. Amazing service really!

So, coming to the food, we first started with some cool mocktails - one was cucumber based with a sweet yet tangy taste and the other also was a tangy masala type drink with a really good sweet taste.

Then we had some starters. First was Mysore Bonda, which was like a medu vada, and the other was Kothmir Vadi. Both of these were amazing, served with the typical vicinity chutney, a garlic coconut chutney, and a spicy green chutney. Loved munching on these starters.

Then we also had the soup/mudichu rasam which was like a veg broth with a South Indian preparation. It was really good and slightly spicy. Loved it.

One more of the starter was then served which was rice fritters, so this was also exceptionally good. Small balls with a slightly crispy outer layer and filled with a delicious soft rice stuffing. It was super delicious.

Then for main course we were served with a thali which consisted of a lot of things - Paneer Chettinad (a delicious cottage cheese gravy), Avial (South Indian veggies preparation), Methi Thovathal (It had Fenugreek), Urulai Pattani Stew (a delicious stew with green peas and potato). The thali also had curd rice, stream rice, assortment of breads, like malbari paratha, appam, phulka, and dosa. To top it off, it was served with a tall glass of masala chhas.

While on the thali, a special trolley was ruled over to us that had like 9-10 varieties of pickles a few seafood one and some Veg ones. Just loved the overall experience that is being provided here. A perfect authentic South Indian feel!

For dessert, we had rasmalai, gulab jamun, and a scoop of Belgian chocolate. It was just a really perfect end to the perfect meal that we had here. For me this is the best South Indian place that one can find in Mumbai! Would definetly live to visit again!

The Orchid Hotel was always something I fancied for ages. Luckily on a Sunday Morning I decided that we should try their South Indian Restaurant i.e South Of Vindyas.
I always fancied South Indian Food but my definition was limited to Idlis and Dosa’s before. However I was proved wrong on that day where SOV came up with foods from all possible South Indian States. Kerala, Andhra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu all managed to have some place on my plate that day.

We started off the day with Mor(Buttermilk) along with assorted papads. The live music along with the meal was just serene and added to its already wonderful ambience which every South Indian would be proud of.

Then came onto our plates were two wonderful appetisers/snacks however you would like to term it.
The Mysore Munda was perfect and it was bettered by Mixed Munda which was served with a green spicy chutney and a wonderful upgrade/tweak to a regular vada.

Then up was rice based Paniyaram served with a tangy orangish tomato chutney which manages to catch my imagination that South Indian food is much more than what meets our eye.

Right then we were served with two good mocktails. Kiwi Cooler and Watermelon Punch were both very refreshing and different compared to the regular drinks that we have these days.

Then Finally came the chance to try thali or as Keralites like to call Sadhya.

The Sadhya was full of various items,
Snake Gourd Dry Bhaji topped with a bit of coconut and southern spices to make it a slightly savoury dish.
Dry Potato Bhaji tossed in red spices to give you hint of spice.
Vegetable stew just perfect for one to dip appam and enjoy the spongy appam which has totally accepted the stew.
Spicy Potato or Bangala Dumba Vepudu a curry for a change thick and red with wholesome spices to keep your tongue burning. I personally loved it coz I am more of a person who loves a lot of spice.
Curd Rice which is pretty much a staple for every South Indian.
Payasaam made of of full grained wheat which was perfect and not too sweet.

Everything above was served with appals and malabar paratha to have a one Anna Meal.

Finally, I ended my day with a glass of Filter Coffee which is just perfect.

Orchid is one of the perfect luxurious 5 star hotels in Mumbai. One fine day I had visited Boulevard cafe at this hotel and I came across South of Vindhyas. Being a south Indian food fan I decided to visit their lunch buffet.

Talking about food, we had visited for the veg lunch buffet. Here's the list of endless delicious items we tried

Pannkam

This was their sweet and tangy welcome drink. One was made of kokum and the other was made of cucumber. They both were really refreshing.

Lemon Rasam

It was made with lentils, tomatoes and lemon. We had it as a soup but you can club it with rice or some stir fried veggies. The aroma was just amazing.

Kanda Bhajia

Perfect crispy and juicy onion bhajias were served with a south indian taste

Medu vada

The vadas were just amazing. Crisp on the outside and soft from within. It was served with delicious coconut chutney.

The thali consisted of Beans usli (beans preparation), pinach pondu curry (spinach preparation), uralai roast (potato preparation), appam, kal dosa, curd rice, dahi. Then we were served with 3 types of rice - basmati, pooni and tomato rice.

In desserts we had payyasam and rasmalai. Both were delicious.

Ambiance:

South of Vindhyas is located inside the prestigious Orchid hotel on the ground floor. It is 10 minutes from station and it is also close to Mumbai's domestic airport, 5 mins walking distance from the airport. The entrance itself gives you the vibes of a South Indian restaurant. At the entrance was a a big oil lamp placed at the centre of rangoli. The chairs and tables were made of wood and the walls were decorated giving you a vibe of the South

Service and Staff: The staff was courteous and helpful. The staff made sure that everything was perfect. Service was on time. Also, all the staff were dressed in south Indian attire.

Lunch or dinner, this place is a must visit for all South Indian food lovers.

South of Vindhyas – Vanakkam||Namaskaram||Namaskara||Namasthe

South of Vindhyas located at the ground floor of Orchid Hotel brings you to the best of authentic south Indian cuisines and delicacies. My experience at South of Vindhyas left my soul happy and satisfied. Everything here right from the interiors, food, desserts and staff deserves applaud for presenting you taste and culture of our south Indian state.

To start with dinner we were offered with Chicken Broth (rasam) – best rasam I had ever had. Piping hot and subtle balance of flavours.

Next as the starters were in preparation crispy papadams along with three different freshly prepared chutneys we had.

As we were in the middle of finishing papapdams trolly of starters came across our table. So it had Mini Medu Vada, Cabbage Vadai, Pepper Chicken, Dry Masala Prawns & Rawa fried fish. After completing all of them we were almost half full. Each one of them was prepared to perfection. None of them had anything missing.

So we took a break for a while clicking pictures of interiors and enjoying the classical Music played by sitar and tabla artist.

And here comes the boss of all A Grand thali which we was a wholesome meal comprising of chicken curry, fish curry, mutton curry, crab meat, vegetable stew and dry squids. Also accompanied by Malabari Paratha, Fulka, Kal Dosa & Appam (You can witness it live prepared in the kitchen). Completing the thali was itself a task as in our day-to-day lives most of us will be having of the thali.

Ambience – As we entered first thing my eyes peeped through was the writing “South of Vindhyas – from south to your mouth “which is self-explanatory. A few steps ahead a big oil lamp placed within the centre of rangoli which adds more to the southern vibes. Interiors resemble a proper south Indian home with chairs and table made up of wood.

Service – All the staff is well dressed in south Indian attire. We had a warm welcome by every one of them. Captain Mr. Adityaraj explained us about the cuisines we would be savouring soon. Overall we had a homely feeling throughout the span of time.

Food – 5/5

Service – 5/5

Ambience – 5/5
